Local stresses in a tissue, a collective property, regulate cell division and apoptosis. In turn, cell growth and division induce active stresses in the tissue. As a consequence, there is a feedback between cell growth and local stresses. However, how the cell dynamics depend on local stress-dependent cell division and the feedback strength is not fully understood. Here, we probe the consequences of stress-mediated growth and cell division on cell dynamics using agent-based simulations of a two-dimensional growing tissue. We discover a rich dynamical behavior of individual cells, ranging from jamming (mean square displacement, $\Delta (t) \sim t^{\alpha}$ with $\alpha$ less than unity), to hyperdiffusion ($\alpha > 2$) depending on cell division rate and the strength of the mechanical feedback. Strikingly, $\Delta (t)$ is determined by the tissue growth law, which quantifies cell proliferation (number of cells $N(t)$ as a function of time). The growth law ($N(t) \sim t^{\lambda}$ at long times) is regulated by the critical pressure that controls the strength of the mechanical feedback and the ratio between cell division-apoptosis rates. We show that $\lambda \sim \alpha$, which implies that higher growth rate leads to a greater degree of cell migration. The variations in cell motility are linked to the emergence of highly persistent forces extending over several cell cycle times. A variety of living and non-living systems exhibit collective motion. From swarm robotics to bacterial swarms, and tissue wound healing to human crowds, examples of collective motion are highly diverse but all of them share the common necessary ingredient of moving and interacting agents. While collective motion has been extensively studied in non-proliferating systems, how the proliferation of constituent agents affects their collective behavior is not well understood. Here, we focus on growing active agents as a model for cells and study how the interplay between noise in their direction of movement and proliferation determines the overall spatial pattern of collective motion. In this agent-based model, motile cells possess the ability to adhere to each other through cell-cell adhesion, grow in size and divide. Cell-cell interactions influence not only the direction of cell movement but also cell growth through a force-dependent mechanical feedback process. We show that noise in the direction of a cell's motion has striking effects on the emergent spatial distribution of cell collectives and proliferation. While higher noise strength leads to a random spatial distribution of cells, we also observe increased cell proliferation. On the other hand, low noise strength leads to a ring-like spatial distribution of cell collectives together with lower proliferation. Our findings provide insight into how noise in the direction of cell motion determines the local spatial organization of cells with consequent mechanical feedback on cell division impacting cell proliferation due to the formation of cell clusters.

Cells are dynamic systems characterized by temporal variations in biophysical properties such as stiffness and contractility. Recent studies show that the recruitment and release of actin filaments into and out of the cell cortex - a network of proteins underneath the cell membrane - leads to cell stiffening prior to division and softening immediately afterward. In three-dimensional (3D) cell collectives, it is unclear whether the stiffness change during division at the single-cell scale controls the spatial structure and dynamics at the multicellular scale. This is an important question to understand as cell stiffness variations play an important role in tissue spatial organization and cancer progression. Using a minimal 3D model incorporating cell birth, death, and cell-to-cell elastic and adhesive interactions, we investigate the effect of mechanical heterogeneity - variations in individual cell stiffnesses that make up the tumor cell collective - on tumor spatial organization and cell dynamics. We discover that spatial mechanical heterogeneity characterized by a spheroid core composed of stiffer cells and softer cells in the periphery emerge within dense 3D cell collectives, which may be a general feature of multicellular tumor growth. We show that heightened spatial mechanical heterogeneity enhances single-cell dynamics and volumetric tumor growth driven by fluctuations in cell elasticity. Activity and self-generated motion are fundamental features observed in many living and non-living systems. Given that inter-particle adhesive forces are known to regulate particle dynamics, we investigate how adhesion strength controls the boundary growth and roughness in an active particle aggregate. Using particle based simulations incorporating both activity (birth, death and growth) and systematic physical interactions (elasticity and adhesion), we establish that inter-particle adhesion strength ($f^{ad}$) controls the surface roughness of a densely packed three-dimensional(3D) active particle aggregate expanding into a highly viscous medium. We discover that the surface roughness of a 3D active particle aggregate increases in proportion to the inter-particle adhesion strength, $f^{ad}$. We show that asymmetry in the radial and tangential active particle mean squared displacement (MSD) suppresses 3D surface roughness at lower adhesion strengths. By analyzing the statistical properties of particle displacements at the aggregate periphery, we determine that the 3D surface roughness is driven by the movement of active particle towards the core at high inter-particle adhesion strengths. Our results elucidate the physics controlling the expansion of adhesive 3D active particle collectives into a highly viscous medium, with implications into understanding stochastic interface growth in active matter systems characterized by self generated particle flux., Comment: 20 pages, 3 figures

Collective cell movement, characterized by multiple cells that are in contact for substantial periods of time and undergo correlated motion, plays a central role in cancer and embryogenesis. Recent imaging experiments have provided time-dependent traces of individual cells, thus providing an unprecedented picture of tumor spheroid growth. By using simulations of a minimal cell model, we analyze the experimental data that map the movement of cells in fibrosarcoma tumor spheroid embedded in a collagen matrix. Both simulations and experiments show that cells in the core of the spheroid exhibit subdiffusive glassy dynamics (mean square displacement, $\Delta(t) \approx t^{\alpha}$ with $\alpha < 1$), whereas cells in the periphery exhibit superdiffusive motion, $\Delta(t) \approx t^{\alpha}$ with $\alpha>1)$. The motion of most of the cells near the periphery undergo highly persistent and correlated directional motion, thus explaining the observed superdiffusive behavior. The $\alpha$ values for cells in the core and periphery, extracted from simulations and experiments are in near quantitative agreement with each other, which is surprising given that no parameter in the model was used to fit the measurements. The qualitatively different dynamics of cells in the core and periphery is captured by the fourth order susceptibility, introduced to characterize metastable states in glass forming systems. Analyses of the velocity autocorrelation of individual cells show remarkable spatial heterogeneity with no two cells exhibiting similar behavior. The prediction that $\alpha$ should depend on the location of the cells in the tumor is amenable to experimental test. Collective migration dominates many phenomena, from cell movement in living systems to abiotic self-propelling particles. Focusing on the early stages of tumor evolution, we enunciate the principles involved in cell dynamics and highlight their implications in understanding similar behavior in seemingly unrelated soft glassy materials and possibly chemokine-induced migration of CD8$^{+}$ T cells. We performed simulations of tumor invasion using a minimal three dimensional model, accounting for cell elasticity and adhesive cell-cell interactions as well as cell birth and death to establish that cell growth rate-dependent tumor expansion results in the emergence of distinct topological niches. Cells at the periphery move with higher velocity perpendicular to the tumor boundary, while motion of interior cells is slower and isotropic. The mean square displacement, $\Delta(t)$, of cells exhibits glassy behavior at times comparable to the cell cycle time, while exhibiting super-diffusive behavior, $\Delta (t) \approx t^{\alpha}$ ($\alpha > 1$), at longer times. We derive the value of $\alpha \approx 1.33$ using a field theoretic approach based on stochastic quantization. In the process we establish the universality of super-diffusion in a class of seemingly unrelated non-equilibrium systems. Super diffusion at long times arises only if there is an imbalance between cell birth and death rates. Our findings for the collective migration, which also suggests that tumor evolution occurs in a polarized manner, are in quantitative agreement with {\it in vitro} experiments. We study the dynamic response of a superfluid field to a moving edge dislocation line to which the field is minimally coupled. We use a dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii equation, and determine the initial conditions by solving the equilibrium version of the model. We consider the subsequent time evolution of the field for both glide and climb dislocation motion and analyze the results for a range of values of the constant speed $V_D$ of the moving dislocation. We find that the type of motion of the dislocation line is very important in determining the time evolution of the superfluid field distribution associated with it. Climb motion of the dislocation line induces increasing asymmetry, as function of time, in the field profile, with part of the probability being, as it were, left behind. On the other hand, glide motion has no effect on the symmetry properties of the superfluid field distribution. We calculate the dislocation glide mobility in solid $^4$He within a model that assumes the existence of a superfluid field associated with dislocation lines. Prompted by the results of this mobility calculation, we study within this model the role that such a superfluid field may play in the motion of the dislocation line when a stress is applied to the crystal. To do this, we relate the damping of dislocation motion, calculated in the presence of the assumed superfluid field, to the shear modulus of the crystal. As the temperature increases, we find that a sharp drop in the shear modulus will occur at the temperature where the superfluid field disappears. We compare the drop in shear modulus of the crystal arising from the temperature dependence of the damping contribution due to the superfluid field, to the experimental observation of the same phenomena in solid $^4$He and find quantitative agreement. Our results indicate that such a superfluid field plays an important role in dislocation pinning in a clean solid $^4$He at low temperatures and in this regime may provide an alternative source for the unusual elastic phenomena observed in solid $^4$He., Comment: 17 pages, 2 figures. We study the equilibrium properties of an Ising model on a disordered random network where the disorder can be quenched or annealed. The network consists of four-fold coordinated sites connected via variable length one-dimensional chains. Our emphasis is on nonuniversal properties and we consider the transition temperature and other equilibrium thermodynamic properties, including those associated with one dimensional fluctuations arising from the chains. We use analytic methods in the annealed case, and a Monte Carlo simulation for the quenched disorder. Our objective is to study the difference between quenched and annealed results with a broad random distribution of interaction parameters. The former represents a situation where the time scale associated with the randomness is very long and the corresponding degrees of freedom can be viewed as frozen, while the annealed case models the situation where this is not so. We find that the transition temperature and the entropy associated with one dimensional fluctuations are always higher for quenched disorder than in the annealed case. These differences increase with the strength of the disorder up to a saturating value. We report measurements of the superconducting transition temperature, $T_c$, in CoO/Co/Cu/Co/Nb multilayers as a function of the angle $\alpha$ between the magnetic moments of the Co layers. Our measurements reveal that $T_c(\alpha)$ is a nonmonotonic function, with a minimum near $\alpha={\pi}/{2}$. Numerical self-consistent solutions of the Bogoliubov - de Gennes equations quantitatively and accurately describe the behavior of $T_c$ as a function of $\alpha$ and layer thicknesses in these superconductor / spin-valve heterostructures. We show that experimental data and theoretical evidence agree in relating $T_c(\alpha)$ to enhanced penetration of the triplet component of the condensate into the Co/Cu/Co spin valve in the maximally noncollinear magnetic configuration., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures

We present a study of the hydrodynamics of compressible superfluids in confined geometries. We use a perturbative procedure in terms of the dimensionless expansion parameter $(v/v_s)^2$ where $v$ is the typical speed of the flow and $v_s$ the speed of sound. A zero value of this parameter corresponds to the incompressible limit. We apply the procedure to two specific problems: the case of a trapped superfluid with a gaussian profile of the local density, and that of a superfluid confined in a rotating obstructed cylinder. We find that the corrections due to finite compressibility which are, as expected, negligible for liquid He, are important but amenable to the perturbative treatment for typical ultracold atomic systems., Comment: 17 pages, including 7 figures.
