About one third of Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) sources are unassociated. We perform multi-class classification of Fermi-LAT sources using machine learning with the goal of probabilistic classification of the unassociated sources. A particular attention is paid to the fact that the distributions of associated and unassociated sources are different as functions of source parameters. The \textit{ab initio} approach is used to evaluate the excitation energies of the $2s2p \, ^{2S+1}P_J$ states from the ground state as well as the $2s2p \, ^3P_1 \rightarrow 2s2p \, ^3P_0$ and $2s2p \, ^3P_2 \rightarrow 2s2p \, ^3P_1$ transition energies for selected Be-like highly-charged ions over a wide range: from ${\rm Ar}^{14+}$ to ${\rm U}^{88+}$. The issue of a strong level mixing due to the proximity of states with the same symmetry is addressed by applying the QED perturbation theory for quasidegenerate levels. The employed approach combines a rigorous perturbative QED treatment up to the second order with electron-electron correlation contributions of the third and higher orders calculated in the Breit approximation. The higher-order QED effects are estimated using the model-QED-operator approach. The nuclear-recoil and nuclear-polarization effects are taken into account as well. The performed calculations are accompanied with a thorough analysis of uncertainties due to uncalculated effects. The most accurate theoretical predictions for the excitation and transition energies in Be-like ions are obtained, which, in general, are in perfect agreement with the available experimental data., Comment: 15 pages, 1 figure, 5 tables

Excess of gamma rays with a spherical morphology around the Galactic center (GC) observed in the Fermi large area telescope (LAT) data is one of the most intriguing features in the gamma-ray sky. The excess has been interpreted by annihilating dark matter as well as emission from a population of unresolved millisecond pulsars (MSPs). We use a multi-class classification of Fermi-LAT sources with machine learning to study the distribution of MSP-like sources among unassociated Fermi-LAT sources near the GC. A method for calculating the field shift contribution to isotope shifts in many-electron atoms, incorporating quantum electrodynamics (QED) effects, is introduced. We also implement the model QED approach to incorporate QED contribution to the nuclear recoil effect at the high-order correlation effects treatment level. The proposed computational scheme is used to revise the value of the root-mean-square (rms) nuclear charge radius of the isomer of aluminium-26, $^{26m}$Al. This radius is important for the global analysis of the $V_{ud}$ element of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix. The difference in mean-square nuclear charge radii of $^{27}$Al and $^{26m}$Al, obtained by combining the calculated atomic factors with recently measured isotope shift (IS) of the $3s^23p~^2P_{3/2} \to 3s^24s~^2S_{1/2}$ transition in Al, is $0.443(44)(19)~{\rm fm}^2$, where the first and second uncertainties are experimental and theoretical ones, respectively. The latter is reduced by a factor of 4 with respect to the previous study. Using this value and the known value of the rms charge radius of $^{27}$Al, the resultant value $R_c(^{26m}$Al) = 3.132(10)~fm is obtained. With the improved accuracy of the calculated IS factors the error in $R_c(^{26m}$Al) is now dominated by the experimental uncertainty. Similar revision of rms charge radii is made for the $^{28}$Al, $^{29}$Al, $^{30}$Al, $^{31}$Al and $^{32}$Al isotopes using existing IS measurements. Additionally, atomic factors are computed for the $3s^23p~^2P_{3/2} \to 3s^24s~^2S_{1/2}$, $3s^23p~^2P_{1/2} \to 3s^25s~^2S_{1/2}$ and $3s^23p~^2P_{3/2} \to 3s^25s~^2S_{1/2}$ transitions in Al, which can be used in future experimental studies.

Methods of bound-state QED that treat the self-energy contributions to the Lamb shift within the partial-wave expansion usually face the problem of slow convergence of the latter. Inspired by an approach formulated in [J. Sapirstein and K. T. Cheng, Phys. Rev. A 108, 042804 (2023)], we propose a modification of the standard procedure for calculating the contributions of two-electron self-energy diagrams. The performance of the method is studied by evaluating the corresponding corrections to the binding energies of He-like ions and by comparing the obtained results with the state-of-the-art values available in the literature: our calculations involving a much smaller number of partial waves show an improvement in accuracy., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures, 6 tables

The problem of orbital collapse of the $5g$ and $6f$ electrons in atoms of superheavy elements (SHE) is considered. Previously, the presence of the orbital collapse was established for the $4f$ and $5f$ elements of the periodic table. Because of the large centrifugal term for the $f$ and $g$ electrons, the effective radial potential has two wells, one narrow and deep and the other wide but shallow. Depending on the external parameters, the electron can be either localized in the outer well with low binding energy and large average radius or in the inner one with higher energy and smaller radius. In this work, we demonstrate the existence of the orbital collapse for the $5g$ electrons when changing the total angular momentum $J$ of the atom. We also found that for some SHE elements, two different solutions of the same Dirac-Fock equations may coexist, with the $5g$ electron localized either in the inner or outer well. In both cases, the radial wave functions are nodeless. Excess of gamma rays around the Galactic center (GC) observed in the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) data is one of the most intriguing features in the gamma-ray sky. The spherical morphology and the spectral energy distribution with a peak around a few GeV are consistent with emission from annihilation of dark matter particles. Other possible explanations include a distribution of millisecond pulsars (MSPs). One of the caveats of the MSP hypothesis is the relatively small number of associated MSPs near the GC. In this paper we perform a multi-class classification of Fermi-LAT sources using machine learning and determine the contribution from unassociated MSP-like sources near the GC. The spectral energy distribution, spatial morphology, and the source count distribution are consistent with expectations for a population of MSPs that can explain the gamma-ray excess. Probabilistic classification of unassociated Fermi-LAT sources using machine learning methods has an implicit assumption that the distributions of associated and unassociated sources are the same as a function of source parameters, which is not the case for the Fermi-LAT catalogs. The problem of different distributions of training and testing (or target) datasets as a function of input features (covariates) is known as the covariate shift. In this paper, we, for the first time, quantitatively estimate the effect of the covariate shift on the multi-class classification of Fermi-LAT sources. We introduce sample weights proportional to the ratio of unassociated to associated source probability density functions so that associated sources in areas, which are densely populated with unassociated sources, have more weight than the sources in areas with few unassociated sources. We find that the covariate shift has relatively little effect on the predicted probabilities, i.e., the training can be performed either with weighted or with unweighted samples, which is generally expected for the covariate shift problems. The main effect of the covariate shift is on the estimated performance of the classification. The rigorous two-center approach based on the dual-kinetically balanced finite-basis-set expansion is applied to one-electron, heteronuclear diatomic Bi-Au, U-Pb, and Cf-U quasimolecules. The obtained $1\sigma$ ground-state energies are compared with previous calculations, when possible. Upon analysis of three different placements of the coordinate system's origin in the monopole approximation of the two-center potential: (1) in the middle, between the nuclei, (2) in the center of the heavy nucleus, and (3) in the center of the light nucleus, a substantial difference between the results is found. The leading contributions of one-electron quantum electrodynamics (self-energy and vacuum polarization) are evaluated within the monopole approximation as well.

For heliumlike uranium, the energies of the singly-excited $1sns$, $1snp$, and $1snd$ states with $n\leq 4$ and the probabilities of the one-photon $1s3d\to 1s2p$, $1s3p\to 1s2s$, $1s3p\to 1s2p$ and $1s4d\to 1s2p$ transitions are evaluated. The calculations are performed within the Breit approximation using the configuration-interaction method in the basis of the Dirac-Fock-Sturm orbitals. The QED corrections to the energy levels are calculated employing the model-QED-operator approach. The nuclear recoil, frequency-dependent Breit-interaction, nuclear polarization, and nuclear deformation corrections are taken into account as well.

The bound-state QED approach is applied to calculations of the $2p_{3/2} \rightarrow 2s$ transition energies in He-, Li-, and Be-like uranium. For U$^{90+}$ and U$^{89+}$, standard perturbation theory for a single level is employed, while the calculations of U$^{88+}$ have required its counterpart for quasidegenerate levels. The utilized approach merges the rigorous QED treatment up to the second order of perturbation theory with the higher-order electron-correlation contributions evaluated within the Breit approximation. The higher-order screened QED effects are estimated by means of the model-QED operator. The nuclear recoil, nuclear polarization, and nuclear deformation effects are taken into account as well. Along with the transition energies, their pairwise differences are calculated. The comprehensive analysis of the uncertainties due to uncalculated effects is carried out, and the most accurate theoretical predictions, which are in perfect agreement with available experimental data, are obtained., Comment: 1 figure, 8 tables

In the paper we develop multi-class classification of Fermi-LAT gamma-ray sources using machine learning with hierarchical determination of classes. One of the main challenges in the multi-class classification of the Fermi-LAT sources is that the size of some of the classes is relatively small, for example with less than 10 associated sources belonging to a class. In the paper we propose a hierarchical structure for the determination of the classes. This enables us to have control over the size of classes and to compare the performance of the classification for different numbers of classes. In particular, the class probabilities in the two-class case can be computed either directly by the two-class classification or by summing probabilities of children classes in multi-class classification. We find that the classifications with few large classes have comparable performance with classifications with many smaller classes. Thus, on the one hand, the few-class classification can be recovered by summing probabilities of classification with more classes while, on the other hand, the classification with many classes gives a more detailed information about the physical nature of the sources. As a result of this work, we construct three probabilistic catalogs. Two catalogs are based on Gaussian mixture model for the determination of the groups of classes: one with the requirement for the minimal number of sources in a group to be larger than 100, which results in six final groups of physical classes, while the other one has the requirement that the minimal number of sources in a group is larger than 15, which results in nine groups of physical classes. The third catalog is based on a random forest determination of the groups of classes with the requirement that the minimal number of sources in a group is larger than 100, which results in six groups of classes. A model-operator approach to fully relativistic calculations of the nuclear recoil effect on energy levels in many-electron atomic systems is worked out. The one-electron part of the model operator for treating the normal mass shift beyond the Breit approximation is represented by a sum of semilocal and nonlocal potentials. The latter ones are constructed by employing the diagonal and off-diagonal matrix elements rigorously evaluated for hydrogenlike ions to first order in the electron-to-nucleus mass ratio. The specific mass shift beyond the lowest-order relativistic approximation has a form which can be directly employed in calculations. The capabilities of the method are probed by comparison of its predictions with the results of ab initio QED calculations. For superheavy elements with atomic numbers $120\leq Z \leq 170$, the concept of the ground-state configuration is being reexamined. To this end, relativistic calculations of the electronic structure of the low-lying levels are carried out by means of the Dirac-Fock and configuration-interaction methods.The magnetic and retardation parts of the Breit interaction as well as the QED effects are taken into account. The influence of the relativistic, QED, and electron-electron correlation effects on the determination of the ground-state is analyzed.

Ab initio method based on a complex-scaling approach and aimed at a rigorous QED description of autoionizing states is worked out. The autoionizing-state binding energies are treated nonperturbatively in $\alpha Z$ and include all the many-electron QED contributions up to the second order. The higher-order electron correlation, nuclear recoil, and nuclear polarization effects are taken into account as well. The developed formalism is demonstrated on the $LL$ resonances in heliumlike argon and uranium. The model-QED-operator approach [Phys. Rev. A 88, 012513 (2013)] to calculations of the radiative corrections to binding and transition energies in atomic systems is extended to the range of nuclear charges $110 \leqslant Z \leqslant 170$. The self-energy part of the model operator is represented by a nonlocal potential based on diagonal and off-diagonal matrix elements of the ab initio self-energy operator with the Dirac-Coulomb wave functions. The vacuum-polarization part consists of the Uehling contribution which is readily computed for an arbitrary nuclear-charge distribution and the Wichmann-Kroll contribution represented in terms of matrix elements similarly to the self-energy part. Performance of the method is studied by comparing the model-QED-operator predictions with the results of ab initio calculations. The model-QED operator can be conveniently incorporated in any numerical approach based on the Dirac-Coulomb-Breit Hamiltonian to account for the QED effects in a wide variety of superheavy elements., Comment: 14 pages, 2 figures, 15 tables

The successive ionization potentials (IPs) and electron affinities (EAs) for superheavy elements with $111 \leq Z \leq 114$, namely, Rg, Cn, Nh, and Fl are reexamined using the relativistic Fock-space coupled-cluster method with nonperturbative single (S), double (D), and triple (T) cluster amplitudes (FS-CCSDT). For the most of considered quantities, the triple-amplitude contributions turn out to be important. The Breit and frequency-dependent Breit corrections are evaluated by means of the configuration-interaction method. The quantum-electrodynamics corrections to the IPs and EAs are taken into account within the model-QED-operator approach. The electron affinity (EA) of superheavy element Og is calculated by the use of the relativistic Fock-space coupled cluster (FSCC) and configuration interaction methods. The FSCC cluster operator expansion included single, double, and triple excitations treated in a non-perturbative manner. The Gaunt and retardation electron-electron interactions are taken into account. Both methods yield the results that are in agreement with each other. The quantum electrodynamics correction to EA is evaluated using the model Lamb-shift operator approach. Relativistic calculations of the electronic structure of the superheavy element of the eighth period $-$ eka-francium ($Z=119$) and its homologues, which form the group of alkali metals, are performed in the framework of the configuration-interaction method and many-body perturbation theory using the basis of the Dirac-Fock-Sturm orbitals (DFS). The obtained values of the ionization potentials, electron affinities, and root-mean-square radii are compared with the corresponding values calculated within the non-relativistic approximation. A comparison with the available experimental data and the results of previous theoretical calculations is given as well. The analysis of the obtained results indicates a significant influence of the relativistic effects for the francium and eka-francium atoms, which leads to a violation of the monotonic behaviour of the listed above chemical properties as a function of the alkaline-element atomic number. We study theoretically the optical response of a monolayer comprizing regularly spaced quantum emitters with a doublet in the ground state (the so-called $\Lambda$-emitters). The emitters' self-action through the retarded dipole-dipole interaction provides a positive feedback, interplay of which with the intrinsic nonlinearity of an isolated emitter, leads to an exotic optical dynamics of the system and prominent effects, such as multistability, self-oscillations, and quasi-chaotic behavior. %The bifurcation diagram approach is used to classify different scenarios of the system's behavior. In a certain spectral domain, the monolayer operates as a bistable mirror. The optical response of the monolayer manifests high sensitivity to the doublet splitting and relaxation within the doublet, suggesting the latter to be the key parameters to tailor the monolayer optical response. These properties make such a system very promising for nanophotonic applications. The strong mixing of close levels with two valence electrons in Be-like xenon greatly complicates ab initio QED calculations beyond the first-order approximation. Due to a strong interplay between the electron-electron correlation and QED effects, the standard single-level perturbative QED approach may fail, even if it takes into account the second-order screened QED diagrams. In the present Letter, the corresponding obstacles are overcome by working out the QED perturbation theory for quasidegenerate states. The contributions of all the Feynman diagrams up to the second order are taken into account. The many-electron QED effects are rigorously evaluated in the framework of the extended Furry picture to all orders in the nuclear-strength parameter $\alpha Z$. The higher-order electron-correlation effects are considered within the Breit approximation. The nuclear recoil effect is accounted for as well. The developed approach is applied to high-precision QED calculations of the ground and singly excited energy levels in Be-like xenon. The most accurate theoretical predictions for the binding and excitation energies are obtained. These results deviate from the most precise experimental value by $3\sigma$ but perfectly agree with a more recent measurement., Comment: 2 tables, 1 figure

The electron-electron interaction correction of first order in $1/Z$ to the one-electron part of the nuclear recoil effect on binding energies in atoms and ions is considered within the framework of the rigorous QED approach. The calculations to all orders in $\alpha Z$ are performed for the $1s^2$ state in heliumlike ions and the $1s^2 2s$ and $1s^2 2p_{1/2}$ states in lithiumlike ions in the range $Z=5$--$100$. The results obtained are compared with the Breit-approximation values. The performed calculations complete a systematic treatment of the QED nuclear recoil effect up to the first order in $1/Z$. In [Li ${\it et \, al.}$, Phys. Rev. A ${\bf 98}$, 020502(R) (2018)] it was claimed that the model-potential computations of the Lamb shift on the $^2P_{1/2}-{}^2P_{3/2}$ fine structure in fluorinelike uranium lead to a discrepancy between theory and experiment. Later, it was reported by [Volotka ${\it et \, al.}$, Phys. Rev. A ${\bf 100}$, 010502(R) (2019)] that {\it ab initio} QED calculation, including the first-order one-electron QED contributions and the related effects of two-electron screening, yields the result which restores the agreement between theory and experiment and strongly disagrees with the model-potential Lamb shift values. In the present paper, the model Lamb shift operator [Shabaev ${\it et \, al.}$, Phys. Rev. A ${\bf 88}$, 012513 (2013)] is used to evaluate the QED effects on the $^2P_{1/2}-{}^2P_{3/2}$ fine structure in F-like ions. The calculations are performed by incorporating this operator into the Dirac-Coulomb-Breit equation employing different methods. It is demonstrated that the methods, based on including the Lamb shift operator either into the Dirac-Fock equations or into the calculations by perturbation theory, lead to the theoretical results which are in good agreement with each other and with experiment. The restriction of these results to the first order in the QED effects leads to a value which agrees with the aforementioned ${\it ab\, initio}$ QED result., Comment: 6 pages, 5 tables

We show that photon wave packets can be manipulated and reshaped in various ways by a quantum junction comprising a set of three-level atoms coupling two waveguides. We consider atomic nodes with the $\Lambda$-scheme of allowed optical transitions, one of which is driven by an external classical control field. Addressing the dynamics of wave packets in such a system, we demonstrate that a photon pulse can be either stored partially in the junction, delayed by a controlled time, split into several parts, or routed into one of the selected output channels. We argue, therefore, that our proposed design is a promising prototype of a multipurpose quantum junction., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures

The nuclear recoil effect on the $^2 P_{3/2}$-state $g$ factor of B-like ions is calculated to first order in the electron-to-nucleus mass ratio $m/M$ in the range $Z=18$--$92$. The calculations are performed by means of the $1/Z$ perturbation theory. Within the independent-electron approximation, the one- and two-electron recoil contributions are evaluated to all orders in the parameter $\alpha Z$ by employing a fully relativistic approach. The interelectronic-interaction correction of first order in $1/Z$ is treated within the Breit approximation. Higher orders in $1/Z$ are partially taken into account by incorporating the screening potential into the zeroth-order Hamiltonian. The nuclear recoil effect on the ground-state $g$ factor of highly charged boronlike ions is considered within the relativistic framework. The interelectronic-interaction contribution is evaluated within the Breit approximation employing two independent approaches: the second-order perturbation theory and the configuration-interaction Dirac-Fock-Sturm method. Fully relativistic approach is applied to evaluation of the nuclear recoil effect on the bound-electron $g$ factor in hydrogenlike ions to first order in the electron-to-nucleus mass ratio $m/M$ and to all orders in $\alpha Z$. We conduct a theoretical study of the nonlinear optical response of a two-dimensional semi-conductor quantum dot supercrystal subjected to a quasi-resonant continuous wave excitation. Aconstituent quantum dot is odeled as a three-level ladder-like system (comprising the ground, theone-exciton, and the bi-exction states). To study the stationary response of the supercrystal, wepropose an exact linear parametric method of solving the nonlinear steady-state problem, whileto address the supercrystal optical dynamics qualitatively, we put forward a novel method to cal-culate the bifurcation diagram of the system. Analyzing the dynamics, we demonstrate that thesupercrystal can exhibit multistability, periodic and aperiodic self-oscillations, and chaotic behavior,depending on parameters of the supercrystal and excitation conditions. The effects originate fromthe interplay of the intrinsic nonlinearity of quantum dots and the retarded inter-dot dipole-dipoleinteraction. The latter provides a positive feedback which results in the exotic supercrystal opticaldynamics. These peculiarities of the supercrystal optical response open up a possibility for all-opticalapplications and devices.
