As large solar energetic particle (SEP) events can add significant radiation dose to astronauts in a short period of time and even induce acute clinical responses during missions, they present a concern for manned space flight operation. To assist the operations team in modeling and monitoring organ doses and any possible acute radiation-induced risks to astronauts during SEP events in real time, ARRT (Acute Radiation Risks Tool) 1.0 has been developed and successfully tested for Artemis I mission. The ARRT 2.0 described in this work integrates an established SEP forecasting model – UMASEP-100, further enabling real-time dose prediction for the upcoming Artemis II and following missions. With the new module linking with UMASEP-100 outputs in real time, the total BFO doses of most significant events can be communicated at the time of onset and hours before the peak. This is based on a flux-dose formula identified from comparing UMASEP-100 results with transport calculation for the events during 1994-2013 and validated with events outside that period. ARRT 2.0 also shows capability to distinguish minor events from significant ones to screen false alarms that will cause disruptions for space activities. This improvement provides additional information for operational teams to make timely decisions in contingent scenarios of severe SEP events to mitigate radiation exposure.

Finite element modeling of pressurized spacesuits and implementation with human body models offers many advantages over physical experimentation, but also presents significant challenges. A model of pressurized spacesuit softgoods was developed, integrated with an existing hardgoods model, and fitted to a human body model. Two representative loading scenarios were simulated: dynamic external suit loading and internal occupant-driven loading, to serve as proof-of-concept for the modeling techniques employed. The modeled interactions behaved as intended and illustrate that finite element models of pressurized spacesuits can be used in conjunction with human body models to assess the biomechanical behavior. Further model development and experimental validation are needed.

Extravehicular activity (EVA) is one of the most dangerous and cognitively demanding actions that astronauts can execute, and the cognitive demands associated with future partial gravity EVA on the Moon and Mars are expected to be higher compared to microgravity EVA currently conducted from the International Space Station (ISS). Decrements in cognitive performance present an important risk to crew safety during exploration mission class EVA. Yet there is currently insufficient data to characterize cognitive performance prior to, during, and following EVA. Furthermore, it is still unclear which cognitive domains are most important for conducting mission critical decisions with crew safety implications. To address this gap, we conducted a cognitive task analysis (CTA) of EVA to characterize the procedures, the cognitive demands required, and the critical safety decisions associated with decrements in cognitive performance. We used the applied cognitive task analysis method as outlined by Militello and Hutton (1998) and conducted interviews with subject matter experts (SMEs) in EVA at NASA Johnson Space Center in summer 2024. Interviews focused on exploration EVA and elicited feedback from SMEs on the cognitive skills required for specific EVA tasks including cognitive strategies, critical cues, and decision-making strategies. A cognitive demands table was assembled to consolidate and synthesize the information from all interviews. The information from this cognitive task analysis will inform ongoing work to identify the key cognitive domains for safe decision-making during exploration mission class EVA on the Moon and Mars. This work will importantly provide a link between cognitive domains identified in the cognitive task analysis and operationally-relevant performance metrics collected during spaceflight and simulation EVA that can be tracked and assessed by NASA mission operations. Ultimately, this work will aid in the development and application of exploration class cognitive performance monitoring capabilities to improve safe decision-making and inform EVA planning on future spaceflight missions to the Moon and Mars.

This report details the results of the research and work of undergraduate students at the University of South Alabama across the 2023-24 academic year. These results examine the use of heat pipes for air revitalization in space exploration and habitation units. The current mechanism for removing carbon dioxide in the International Space Station is the Carbon Dioxide Removal Assembly (CDRA), which involves 2 cooperating adsorbent beds that continuously adsorb and desorb carbon dioxide. Recently, NASA has investigated the use of air-cooled temperature swing adsorption compressors (AC-TSAC) to provide both adsorption and compression of CO2. To effectively adsorb and desorb CO2, the beds must operate across a range of temperatures and require efficient heating and cooling to reach the necessary operating temperatures. Heat pipes, which are fluid-filled rods that use a wicking mechanism to transfer heat, may provide one alternative approach to moving heat into and out of adsorption beds. To test the cooling efficiency of packed beds equipped with heat pipes, a packed bed was constructed to examine the amount of heat transferred with this technology. In addition to a physical apparatus, a model was built using COMSOL Multiphysics® to obtain an initial assessment of the effectiveness of using heat pipes for temperature control in porous adsorption beds.

Mobility is a critical aspect for spacesuits as it directly influences how astronauts can perform tasks safely and efficiently, while wearing the pressurized suit. Spacesuit motion is dissimilar to human movement and consists of unique movement patterns as result of pressurization and the complex mechanical joint configurations. Thus, it is important to quantify the variations in suited movement patterns and the resulting performance of the wearer for the evaluation of the spacesuit itself and hardware interfaces such as payloads and tools. Traditionally, an individual body joint is assessed for the segment-wise range of motion. For example, the knee is measured through an isolated maneuvering of the joint between the max-to-max positions (e.g., flexion/extension), and the outcome represents the mobility capabilities. These measurements are often conducted using optical motion capture system with respect to anatomical planes. However, there are several considerations for range of motion assessments that are unique to the spacesuit. The purpose of this paper is to describe and provide examples of these additional challenges in representing spacesuit mobility capabilities. Specifically, joint mobility and the variations in suit movement patterns were investigated and compared between functional tasks and isolated range of motion measurements. Motion capture data from the next-gen spacesuit design verification testing was evaluated to compare isolated range of motion tasks to functional tasks, such as one-knee kneeling and squatting. The trajectories from the upper and lower body joint centers with respect to the spacesuit hardware were also calculated. Additionally, the joint trajectories for various functional tasks are presented and compared against the isolated range of motion measurements. In general, range of motion differs between isolated and functional tasks, where functional tasks may even induce greater joint angle excursions. Additionally, there is a large variation in joint range of motion across functional tasks. Combined with several relevant factors (spacesuit fit, physical strength, simulation facility, etc.), spacesuit mobility characterization efforts will need to incorporate the specific contexts, such as task demands and movement mechanisms, when evaluating range of motion assessments.

Fitting a space suit to a person could be considered an art form. Establishing a repeatable fitcheck process to accommodate the full anthropometric range of test subjects for a single suit design is a critical process to be able to prove suit functionality. Suited test subjects can have different preferences on how they fit inside a suit, and different suited test environments can lead to differences in certain suit sizing accommodations. Throughout this paper, the process of achieving an acceptable suit fit for test subjects will be discussed, along with sizing considerations for changes in suit design and test environments. Lessons learned from the Exploration Extravehicular Mobility Unit (xEMU) will be used to describe specific examples, along with key takeaways from additional NASA prototype mobility space suits. The suit fitcheck process starts with utilizing the anthropometric measurements of a test subject to evaluate their relation to the dimensions of space suit hardware in creating a predicted suit sizing configuration. From here, subjective comments and test team observations drive iterations to the suit sizing configuration to culminate in an acceptable suit fit for performance of further test evaluations. Understanding the relation of subjective comments to their impact on altering suit sizing is critical in establishing an acceptable suit fit.

For the upcoming Artemis lunar missions, astronauts will need to train in a spacesuit where partial gravity can be simulated such as the NASA Neutral Buoyancy Lab (NBL). At the NBL, dive weights and foam can be added around the spacesuit to attain a satisfactory center of buoyancy (CB) and center of gravity (CG) location to simulate the lunar gravity (1/6thG) effects. If CG and CB are not co-located properly, incorrect righting moments can be introduced, and both simulation quality and EVA task performance can be impaired. Based on the findings from the initial testing using xEMU spacesuits, it was observed that the weigh-out method (i.e., determination of the weights and foam quantities and position) needed further development to improve the simulation quality, especially for the subjects who experienced excessive instability. This paper aims to present the on-going effort to improve the weigh-out process for enabling NBL lunar EVA simulations. For this effort, a human-suit model was created to use suit CAD and 3D human body scans to estimate both CB and CG location for each suited subject. NBL weigh-out testing was performed to characterize the effects of CG and CB positioning, in which the 3D human-suit model was used to determine optimal weigh-out combinations of weights and foam. Postural, balance, and subjective feedback were gathered for each weigh-out configuration. The results indicated that, as the CB was shifted higher and the CB and CG located closer to each other, the subject tended to be more stable and their EVA performance improved. A high CB location was then prioritized across 4 additional subjects in both small and large size spacesuits. When compared to the initial xEMU test series, improved performance was observed across all subjects as the CB moved higher and aligned closer to the system CG.

Fit, comfort, and mobility of the spacesuit rely on the location, magnitude, and type of contact between the suit and wearer. Typically, spacesuits include the Hard Upper Torso (HUT) comprising the upper torso of the spacesuit. Potential injuries from hard contact between the wearer’s shoulders and the HUT are a concern; therefore, to investigate spacesuit-wearer contact patterns, data from a retrospective study was analyzed. This study had eight subjects wearing the Shuttle Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) spacesuit in two configurations, one with a nominally sized HUT and another with an oversized HUT. The subjects were sized per the NASA standard suit fit procedure. The suit’s arms and lower body were also resized to provide nominal arm and lower body fit, accounting for the larger HUT. Subjects held various shoulder postures (neutral posture, and various maximum shoulder rotations) with the suit pressurized to 4.3 PSI. For each posture, subjects reported the intensity of their perceived contact with the suit on a Borg CR10 scale, 0 indicating a non-existent contact intensity, and 10 representing a maximal contact intensity. Ratings were recorded for 11 regions covering the upper body and these ratings were used to determine the impact of body shape and size on suit contact. Our preliminary findings suggest that oversized HUTs had less contact regions than compared to the nominal HUT; and the region of contact, contact patterns, and contact intensities varied from person to person with the oversized HUT. This variance could be linked to subjects’ body shape and size. The next goal is to establish a causal factor between body shape and size, pose, contact region, and the HUT size. The outcome is expected to help understand the overall contact trends and insights into the influence of HUT sizing on suit fit.

NASA is returning to the Moon to stay. To establish a sustained lunar presence, astronauts will pack spacesuits, surface-mobility tools, rovers, and decades’ worth of knowledge. The U.S. Spacesuit Knowledge Capture (SKC) and Strategic Communications (Strat Comm) team is specialized in capturing, preserving, and sharing space-related knowledge with NASA scientists, technicians, engineers, vendors, and the public to support space exploration. Since the SKC Program’s 2007 inception, its focus has been to capture and share valuable spacesuit-related knowledge with the NASA community. As the program evolved, its notoriety, funding, scope, and staffing expanded from a one-person, part-time, unfunded operation to a small-team, funded entity. Currently, this team has been formulated with a diverse skillset to meet the requirements of its stakeholders. The SKC and Strat Comm team has used its skills to produce over 260 recorded knowledge captures of subject-matter experts (SMEs) and photoshoots. These knowledge captures are in the form of photographs, lectures, workshops, vignettes, videos, and interviews containing essential space-related knowledge. To help educate the space community and public, this trove of information (e.g., videos of world-class facilities, photographs, and SME lectures), produced inside NASA Johnson Space Center, can be obtained through various sources. During Fiscal Year 2024, the SKC and Strat Comm team will focus on several initiatives. Examples of initiatives include the following: 1) share lessons learned during NASA’s internal venues such as Safety & Health Day and Day of Remembrance; 2) share knowledge with the public, educators, and students through a media production titled Exploring the Moon; and 3) highlight NASA’s unique capabilities and expertise in a video series titled What’s Behind This Door? This paper discusses the team's approach, unique capture capability, initiatives, and much more.

A challenge for the International Space Station (ISS) is accumulation of Foreign Object Debris (FOD) and the impacts to crew, equipment, and experiments. One function of the temperature and humidity control system is to capture FOD with various methods of filtration to minimize these impacts. ISS filtration has been augmented by charcoal filters and screens. A qualitative comparison of the quantity of FOD found over the years and the current levels are evaluated. Impacts to FOD are crew time for cleaning, reduction of equipment life, and component damage and examples are provided. Recommendations for further improvements to reduce the accumulation of FOD on ISS is provided.

NASA’s Exploration Extravehicular Mobility Unit (xEMU) is the government reference next-generation space suit design and is engineered to protect astronauts from extreme lunar environmental temperatures. To evaluate the xEMU hardware thermal requirements, the xEMU Testing Team invented, designed, and executed a dual-suit, uncrewed thermal vacuum (TVAC) test at Johnson Space Center’s (JSC) Chamber B. This paper details the test hardware design and test methodology for the “Suit 2” Pressure Garment System (PGS) test article. The uncrewed “Suit 2” PGS test article consisted of a full PGS assembly with simulated Portable Life Support System (PLSS) functionality provided by test equipment, including a ventilation loop and two distinct thermal control loops. This paper will discuss in depth the test hardware design, including internal suit thermal boundary simulation, sensor quantity and placement, test support equipment rigs for gas flow, water flow, and power. Custom hardware designed to add additional penetrations to the suit or provide additional interfaces for sensors will also be discussed. This paper will also address the assembly and integration sequence for the test article. In addition to test hardware design, this paper will provide insights into the test methodology for this test article, including a discussion of thermal steady-state testing, simultaneous dual suit thermal vacuum testing, and hazard mitigation and controls.

Management of logistics on exploration missions includes both looking for ways to minimize the quantities, mass and volume of various consumables, supplies, spares, and equipment as well as ways to minimize the crew time needed for locating and handling those items. Also included are ways to minimize the waste, handling, and resultant products from the processes of maintaining a crew on these missions. The Logistics Reduction project encompasses technologies for management of waste, trash, autonomous logistics, and clothing. This paper provides a status of work from 2023 in these areas including recent accomplishments and challenges encountered. Future objectives and plans for 2024 will also be covered along with the work currently in progress. Specifically, the paper will cover technologies in waste management, namely, the Universal Waste Management System (UWMS) or exploration toilet and work on an alternative waste collection container, the Alternate Fecal Canister. Trash management technologies work on the Trash Compaction Processing System (TCPS) and Trash to Gas (TtG) is summarized with progress to date as well as information on how Jettison as an option is related. Progress and summary of recent accomplishment on the RFID (Radio Frequency ID) Enabled Autonomous Logistics Management (REALM) and the Autonomous Logistics (AL) technologies is detailed. Advanced Clothing System (ACS) and work in the area of Systems Engineering and Integration (SE&I) is also included. Status of the technologies, accomplishments and how the focus areas inform program decisions will be addressed.

Beginning in Artemis V, Lunar Terrain Vehicles (LTV) will be utilized to enable astronauts to explore the lunar south pole and conduct science farther from the landing site than during the Apollo program. However, LTV operation has the potential to cause injury to the suited crew member during their Extravehicular Activity (EVA). Injury risk caused by LTV acceleration and jerk combined with blunt loading from rigid suit components needs to be better understood. An effort began to create requirements for, model, and address the injury risk caused by the LTV combined with Exploration EVA (xEVA) suits. Mitigation of crew injury is a shared responsibility between LTV and the suit since neither can accomplish this independently. The modeling completed in Fiscal Year 2023 (FY23) helped to verify the fidelity of the requirements and parse out vendor responsibility (LTV, xEVAS, or NASA) for Artemis V and beyond. The scope of the modeling in FY23 used the LTV System Requirements Document (SRD) as worst-case inputs and modeled female 5th-, male 50th-, and male 95th-percentile subjects in hard-mounted seated and semi-standing postures. Soft-mounted (i.e., lap belt) and testing to validate the analysis was determined out of scope for FY23 work.

The Exploration Extravehicular Mobility Unit (xEMU) project was the culimation of over a decade of spacesuit development that was performed in-house at the NASA Johnson Space Center. This project reached a level where almost fully completed development fidelity spacesuits had been designed, assembled and tested in an integrated configuration. The xEMU Development-Verification-Test (DVT) hardware was assembled into two different xEMU test articles and underwent a series of thermal-vacuum tests at the Johnson Space Center’s Chamber B. These tests not only gathered data on thermal performance, but also exercised the life support system, communication system, suit information systems, and suit avionics. This complex test has and will continue to produce many meaningful reports ranging from component level test results (for example on spacesuit boots), test design of heater cages to simulate thermal environments for a spacesuit test article, and higher level thermal performance of subsystems (such as the Portable Life Support System) or the entire assembly. This paper provides an overview of the test configuration and also top level results from this highly successful integrated test of the xEMU.

Madidrop is a rectangular ceramic tablet originally designed to dose a 10-20-liter volume of water with silver to act as a biocide for remote communities with unreliable water sources. Silver as a biocide is a proposed method to control bacteria on the International Space Station or future Artemis missions. This would replace iodine currently used due to issues with a dual biocide system in place between Russian and US segments and the extra cost of iodine removal required before consumption. NASA has been reviewing this Madidrop technology and its potential application with a water reclamation system on orbit to dose silver after purifying the water. While there are a couple alternative methods to dosing silver on station, this method is like the existing passive dosing method used currently to dose iodine. Tests conducted characterize the manufacturer’s original intent to leave the tablet in a tank for a specified amount of time before removing and testing alternative passive flow-through methods. Passive flow testing involved two options: keeping the tablet intact or crushing the tablet into smaller particle sizes to increase the surface area while varying particle sizes. The results of these tests revealed a large amount of silver output at first that quickly reduced to a constant lower output within a reasonable dosing concentration range. The initial high concentration peaks after a couple days of quiescence and could be useful for shocking the initial tank water contents. Madidrop used as a passive particle doser could act as a stand-in replacement for iodine in future spaceflight water reclamation systems.

The carbon vapor deposition (CVD) reactor is a technology developed by Honeywell Aerospace to convert methane, at high temperatures, into hydrogen and solid carbon. This element is coupled with a Sabatier reactor to support a closed-loop environmental control and life support system with the aim of achieving nearly complete oxygen recovery (> 95%). Initial open-loop, brassboard CVD reactor tests and simulations have shown the CVD’s ability to achieve moderately high methane conversion and high hydrogen selectivity. However, in an integrated system, additional deficiencies are expected due to recycling of unreacted or extraneous species from the Sabatier reactor (e.g., carbon dioxide, hydrogen, water) and CVD reactor (e.g., hydrocarbons, methane, etc.). Sabatier and CVD reactor models were integrated and simulated to predict potential impacts to individual reactors’ and the overall system’s performance. The simulations showed that increasing the recycle of the CVD effluent hydrogen combined with decreasing the system inlet hydrogen flow rate (i.e., drawing a stoichiometric flow rate from an electrolyzer) can lead to an oxygen recovery of > 95%. However, system integration comes at a detriment to the individual reactors. The simulations show the initial conversion from the integrated system (Sabatier = 87% and CVD = 59%) to be lower than the standalone systems (Sabatier = 91% and CVD = 69%). Furthermore, transient simulations show substrate densification, leading to worsening methane conversion coupled with increasing acetylene production, which is commensurate with soot formation. Simulations predict a shortening of the maintenance interval (i.e., time until CVD methane conversion drops below 50%) in the integrated system, which would increase the consumable substrate mass. These analyses highlight the importance of long-duration, integrated tests to corroborate these findings as well as suggest potential modifications (e.g., intermediate gas separations) to improve performance.

NASA’s Exploration Extravehicular Mobility Unit (xEMU) is the government reference next-generation spacesuit design and is engineered to protect astronauts from extreme lunar environmental temperatures. To evaluate the xEMU hardware thermal requirements, the xEMU Testing Team invented, designed, and executed a dual-suit, uncrewed thermal vacuum (TVAC) test at Johnson Space Center’s (JSC) Chamber B. This paper details the test methodology, hardware setup, and results from the xEMU lunar boots. Eleven unique thermal profiles were tested including both cold and hot environmental cases over the course of five continuous days of testing. This paper will address only the cold environment testing results. The radiative thermal environment was controlled through exposure to liquid-nitrogen shrouds on the chamber walls and through a heater cage surrounding the boots. Notably, the xEMU boots also contacted the liquid-nitrogen chilled floor inside of Chamber B, which provided a conduction pathway to simulate the thermal effects of the lunar surface. Test hardware was developed to extend the water tubing from the Liquid Cooling Ventilation Garment (LCVG) into the boots to set the internal thermal boundary nominally provided by the astronaut’s foot. Thirty-three temperature sensors were used to collect data in critical locations in the xEMU boot assembly as well as for calorimetry to determine heat flux to and from the boots. This paper will document the testing results and provide a high-level interpretation of the testing results. To conclude, this paper will address possible forward work and knowledge gaps present in lunar boot thermal performance and testing.

Maximum O2 recovery from metabolic carbon dioxide (CO2) is desired for future long-duration missions beyond Low Earth Orbit (LEO). The O2 recovery for the Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS) at the International Space Station (ISS), presently limited to 50% (Sabatier), must be highly reliable and efficient and recover a minimum of 75% oxygen (O2) from metabolic CO2. An alternative technology development effort currently underway at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) via a Microfluidic Electrochemical Reactor (MFECR) approach has the potential to increase O2 recovery significantly and reduce the complexity of the ECLSS O2 recovery at the ISS as it would replace three pieces, the CO2 Reduction Assembly (CRA) (Sabatier reactor), the Oxygen Generation Assembly (OGA), and the Plasma Pyrolysis Assembly (PPA). The MFECR's electrochemical process generates ethylene (C2H4) and carbon moxide (CO) instead of methane (CH4) (Sabatier) as a byproduct, eliminating the need for further dehydrogenation through the PPA. As in the OGA, the MFECR's electrochemical process generates O2 and hydrogen (H2) from the water electrolysis process. MSFC and the University of Texas in Arlington (UTA) have jointly designed and fabricated an MFECR's single cell that operates at ambient conditions and utilizes a proprietary catalysis highly selective on reducing CO2 to C2H4 and CO at the cathode. This MFECR's single cell consists of gas diffusion layers at the cathode and anode for respective intake of CO2 and output of O2 from the catalytic layer. This approach is expected to substantially improve the ISS ECLSS sustainability and reduce power and weight requirements as the MFECR would replace three units currently installed in the ISS. In this paper, the authors discuss the outcome of preliminary tests, the current development, and the evaluation efforts on different alternatives for the cathode and the anode configurations, the setup of the MFECR at an engineering development unit (EDU) scale, and the O2 recovery performance, and evaluation efforts on different alternatives on not only the configuration and setup of the MFECR at an Engineering Design Unit (EDU) scale but also the selection of component materials.

Meeting an aggressive mass requirement is a challenge for new space suit development efforts, including that of the Exploration Extravehicular Mobility Unit Portable Life Support System (PLSS) government reference design. To reduce overall system mass, titanium was selected as the primary metal for the PLSS backplate and thermal loop. However, galvanically compatible metals (Hastelloy, Inconel, Monel) have relatively high densities and require further design complexities such as coatings and more challenging manufacturing. Efforts to reduce the mass of the government reference design for an International Space Station (ISS) or lunar mission were halted due to the government’s transition to a commercial Extravehicular Activity (EVA) services approach, but research was conducted into methodologies for mass savings using advanced materials. With the advent of a lunar Artemis mission and potential for future Mars missions, mass becomes a more critical driver going forward. Therefore, alternative materials and processes must be considered to fully close the mass requirement. There are many new materials and processes that can be considered; however, considerations must be made to ensure galvanic compatibility, radiation concerns for sensitive electronics, vacuum compatibility, tight tolerances, fluid compatibility with oxygen and water, and thread insert options. Individual PLSS components may have different requirements and need to be considered separately for reducing overall mass. This report will touch on comparisons between advanced materials, focusing on composites, additive manufacturing, and plastics. It will also address the different processes that may need to be applied when using these materials in the harsh environment of space. Lastly, it will look at specific components and make recommendations for options to reduce the mass of each one.

Based on the findings from the initial testingusing xEMU spacesuits, it was observed that the weigh-out method (i.e., determination of the weights and foam quantities and position) needed further development to improve the simulation quality, especially for the subjects who experienced excessive instability. This paper aims to present the on-going effort to improve the weigh-out process for enabling NBL lunar EVA simulations. For this effort, a human-suit model was created to use suit CAD and 3D human body scansto estimate both CB and CG location for each suited subject. NBL weigh-out testing was performed to characterize the effects of CG and CB positioning, in which the 3D human-suit model was used to determine optimal weigh-out combinations of weights and foam. Postural, balance, and subjective feedback were gathered for each weigh-out configuration. The results indicated that, as the CB was shifted higher and the CB and CG located closer to each other, the subject tended to be more stable and their EVA performance improved. A high CB location was then prioritized across 4 additional subjects in both small and large size spacesuits. When compared to the initial xEMU test series, improved performance was observed across all subjects as the CB moved higher and aligned closer to the system CG.

The purpose of Short Exploration Extravehicular Mobility Unit (SxEMU) thermal vacuum testing was to verify the functionality of the Design Verification Testing (DVT) prototype xEMU (SxEMU for this test) at vacuum pressures and extreme space and lunar surface temperature conditions. The SxEMU Thermal Vacuum Test was the culmination of the DVT xEMU project. This paper’s focus is on the pre-Extravehicular Activity (EVA) test setup, and general performance of the SxEMU Portable Life Support Subsystem (xPLSS), with focus on the performance of the Primary Oxygen Assembly (POA) and Secondary Oxygen Assembly (SOA), including Secondary Oxygen Regulator (SOR) takeover and the POA and SOA low-setpoint change inhibit. The initial pre-EVA test preparation included recharging the batteries and replenishing consumables, including test-system water, oxygen assemblies (with gaseous nitrogen), and the integrated thermal loops, including the Feedwater Supply Assemblies. xPLSS functionality testing included carbon dioxide (CO2) removal via the Rapid Cycle Amine swingbed system, thermal loop temperature control, and monitoring of suit ventilation loop pressure, temperature, and CO2 percentages. Testing evaluated automatic takeover of suit pressure control by the SOR after the primary oxygen supply is depleted. The Primary Oxygen Regulator and SOR low-setpoint change inhibit function prevents the crewmember from inadvertently setting the primary regulator to a low pressure setpoint during an EVA.

NASA’s Exploration Extravehicular Mobility Unit (xEMU) is the government reference next-generation spacesuit design and is engineered to protect astronauts from extreme lunar environmental temperatures. To evaluate the xEMU hardware thermal requirements, the xEMU Testing Team invented, designed, and executed a dual-suit, uncrewed thermal vacuum (TVAC) test at Johnson Space Center’s (JSC) Chamber B. This paper details the test results from the “Suit 2” Pressure Garment System (PGS) test article. The primary objective of the “Suit 2” PGS test article was to evaluate system-level suit heat leak and Environmental Protection Garment (EPG) thermal performance. Eleven unique thermal profiles were tested including both cold and hot environmental cases over the course of five continuous days of testing. The radiative thermal environment was controlled through exposure to liquid-nitrogen shrouds on the chamber walls and a heater cage surrounding the test article. This paper will principally focus on system-level thermal results from the “Suit 2” PGS test article. This paper will examine data collected from one-hundred and seventy thermocouples located in critical locations inside and outside of the suit, as well as seven resistance thermometers (RTDs) for calorimetry to determine total heat flux in and out of the suit. The test data will be compared against the system-level PGS thermal models for model validation. To conclude, this paper will address knowledge gaps presented by unmanned xPGS thermal vacuum testing and the current state of lunar xPGS thermal modeling and testing.

Maintaining a high level of visibility through the helmet of NASA Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) is very difficult under inclement operational conditions. The interior of the helmet bubble will fog up in a high humidity / cold environment with high work rate breathing for extravehicular activity (EVA) that can last up to 8 hours. Currently used wipe on antifog solutions have problems with i) durability, requiring reapplication for every EVA, ii) can potentially get in the astronaut’s eye, impairing their vision, and iii) bottles of solution are a consumable that need to be continuously restocked. Luna Labs has developed a durable, transparent coating that is projected to maintain optical and antifogging properties for the lifetime of the equipment. Luna Labs has leveraged our established Gentoo™ sol-gel coating platform to create a robust, transparent, long-lasting, and antifogging coating. Additionally, the proposed sol-gel coating is thin (2-8 µm), low cost (cents/ft2), and easy to apply while providing excellent abrasion durability and antifogging properties. Luna Labs has produced a coating formulation to possess antifogging properties so that moist air will wet out, forming a microscopically thin sheet of water that does not scatter light. A custom superhydrophilic additive which crosslinks into the durable coating matrix provides superb antifogging properties. This non-scratch transparent coating that will provide continuous antifogging efficacy for >8 hours and environmental durability to last the lifetime of coated component. This technology is relevant to NASA spacesuit applications, as well as for automobiles, aircraft, eyewear, SCUBA masks or any other applications that require transparent antifogging properties.

Scrubbing of the spacesuit air stream to control humidity and regulate carbon dioxide (CO2) relies on amine-loaded resins, colloquially known as sorbents. The efficacy of Rapid Cycle Amine technology relies on the propensity of nitrogens toward adsorption of CO2 while simultaneously offering regenerative properties under vacuum or positive pressure. The commonly utilized sorbent, SA9T, was recreated and evaluated further to increase stability and serve as a benchmark comparison for newly synthesized amine sorbent technologies. Ongoing storage studies with eight different environments will allow the development of applicable storage protocols and provide insight into possible ammonia generation pathways. Attempts to alleviate the known issues with SA9T included the alteration of the primary amine (tetraethylenepentamine), the choice of resin, and the particle size distribution. In-house CO2 breakthrough experiments were conducted using a specialized apparatus that can simulate spacesuit conditions, offering high-quality triplicate capacity analysis affording direct comparison to known adsorbents in the literature. Thermo-Desorption Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry studies on the synthesized materials revealed any reagent or solvent offgassing while Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy tracked the stability of the bound amine. Scanning Electron Microscope images of sieved materials provided a more accurate size interpretation facilitating synthetic design and pressure drop elimination. All efficient sorbents were synthesized to a commercial batch scale subsequent to evaluation including Xplo-SA9T.

Nov 20th, 2023 marks the 25th anniversary of the beginning of construction of the International Space Station (ISS). The ECLS system is constantly changing to meet the needs of current missions and future exploration. The ISS has become the laboratory that was always envisioned, allowing for an ever-growing class of exploration level technologies that will propel the stage forward as humanity advances beyond Low Earth Orbit (LEO). This paper will review the past year, and look towards the future for each U.S. ECLS subsystem. The impacts, challenges, and successes related to the intermingling of incumbent and cutting edge technologies are summarily discussed in this paper.

The launch ascent and abort random vibration environments from NASA’s Orion spacecraft drove the need to test the NASA Orion Crew Survival Suit as an integrated system with exposure to the design levels. In order to properly characterize component responses, a series of integrated tests were designed to incorporate the interaction between a crew member, suit, seat, and the attenuation system. The first Development Test (2017) included human subjects, and was performed with early development seat and suit components, and low level inputs. It provided a baseline for frequency response and behavior of the integrated system. The next two tests, Development Test (2019) and Qualification Test (2020), used manikin surrogates to represent the crew member and increasing levels of component hardware fidelity in order to test to higher input levels. Testing was performed at NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC) and Kennedy Space Center (KSC) Vibration Labs and provided the input levels required to represent the ascent and abort vehicle profiles as well as recorded component response behavior from accelerometer instrumentation and high speed cameras. Inspection of the suit and related components showed that for all seat orientations, and input environments, no damage occurred. Additional pre and post-test checks confirmed the functionality of all suited hardware. Response data of the suited components generally showed heavy attenuation across most of the tested frequency range. Transmissibility plots showed some amplification of components at lower frequency ranges. Overall this series of integrated tests showed that 1) the use of surrogate manikins in the tests were adequate for representing crew in a vibration environment, 2) full vibration levels for ascent and abort were heavily attenuated in the suit components and were non-damaging, and 3) the suit and related components are qualified for the Orion random vibration environments.

Since the beginning of the International Space Station (ISS), water and air quality have been monitored to ensure crew health and verify the performance of the regenerative Environmental Control and Life Support (ECLS) systems. Over the last 25 years, the ISS has evolved greatly with significant changes to operations, crew complement sizes, visiting vehicles, payloads, and upgrades within the regenerative hardware, seen through Technology Demonstration integrations. In particular, better assessment and prevention of volatile organic releases from payloads and crew hygiene products, and implementation of advanced sorbents both on the air and water strings have been successful in reducing contaminant loads. Data on air and water quality for the last five years on ISS will be presented (nominal and contingency air grab samples, in-flight monitoring for air and water quality, and water samples from all segments of the ISS water system), including some notable events. The available data demonstrate the performance of existing ECLS systems and overall status of how the approach to air and water quality have evolved through the new ISS architecture baseline operations.

NASA’s Exploration Extravehicular Mobility Unit (xEMU) is the government reference next-generation spacesuit design and is engineered to protect astronauts from extreme lunar environmental temperatures. To evaluate the xEMU hardware thermal requirements, the xEMU Testing Team invented, designed, and executed a dual-suit, uncrewed thermal vacuum (TVAC) test at Johnson Space Center’s (JSC) Chamber B. This paper details the test methodology, hardware setup, and results from the xEMU helmet and extravehicular visor assembly (EVVA). Two helmets/EVVAs were tested simultaneously in Chamber B, with different thermal environments and EVVA configurations. For the helmet/EVVA on the Short xEMU (SxEMU) test article, five thermal profiles were tested during five simulated EVAs, with four different visor and shade configurations. For the helmet/EVVA on the second xEMU, eleven unique thermal profiles were tested including both cold and hot environmental cases over the course of five continuous days of testing, with a single visor and shade configuration. The radiative thermal environment was controlled through exposure to liquid-nitrogen shrouds on the chamber walls and through two separate heater cages surrounding each respective test article. The thermal effects of the Exploration Informatics (xINFO) lights and camera on the helmet/EVVA was also tested. Twenty-two temperature sensors were used to collect data in critical locations in the xEMU helmet/EVVA assembly. This paper will document the testing results and compare the test data against the xEMU helmet/EVVA and system-level thermal models for model validation.

The expansion of space exploration to commercial space stations represents a shift from government-led endeavors to a new competitive era driven by private companies and innovative forces. The journey to actualize these celestial outposts is fraught with difficulties, including the intricate establishment of Environmental Control and Life Support systems (ECLSS) within these commercial space stations. By applying the insights gleaned from the ISS, particularly during the initial conceptual design phase of the commercial developments, there is an opportunity to circumvent some of the teething issues and optimize the development process. Furthermore, applying insights from the ISS ECLSS design, development, test, and maintenance phases has the potential to enhance system compatibility and mitigate the challenges associated with upgrading a fixed design. This approach can lead to lower costs due to fewer iterations and streamlined processes. This paper will conduct an in-depth evaluation of the ECLS system from both system and operational perspectives with the aim to provide a knowledge capture for early-stage design considerations to bolster the development of sustainable, efficient, and habitable commercial space stations.

Water recovery technologies on the International Space Station (ISS) are designed and optimized for microgravity environments, thus creating a need for innovative systems optimized for mission operations in the presence of gravity. Alternative water recovery technologies under research by the Life Support Systems division were compiled into a series of Partial Gravity Water Recovery System (PGWRS) architectures. Individual unit processes were modeled via fundamental physical-chemical process equations to simulate their method of treatment, including chemical or biological oxidation, flash evaporation, filtration, or adsorption and ion exchange. Dimension and sizing data were then utilized to scale each architecture. Modeling was completed on an assortment of architectures assuming three scenarios in which treatment methods could take advantage of partial gravity: a short-duration mission with a temporary surface habitat, a longer duration mission with a more permanent habitat, and a long duration mission with minimal resupply. Total system mass was estimated to quantitatively compare architectures within scenarios, but qualitative observations were also made regarding system robustness, flexibility, and capacity to meet more stringent demands. Technologies that traded most favorably between the scenarios were those that included a pre-oxidation stage to minimize mass loading to downstream absorption and ion exchange beds, exploited gravity in liquid-vapor separation processes, and reconstituted wastewater components into recyclable material streams.

Human exploration missions beyond low earth orbit, such as NASA’s Artemis Program, present significant challenges to spacecraft system design and supportability. A particularly challenging area is the Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS) that maintains a habitable and life-sustaining environment for crewmembers. NASA is utilizing the experience gained from its current and prior spaceflight programs to mature life support technologies for exploration missions to deep space. The intent is to establish a portfolio of life support system capabilities with proven performance and reliability to enable human exploration missions and reduce risk to success of those missions. As a fully operational human-occupied platform in microgravity, the International Space Station (ISS) presents a unique opportunity to act as a testbed for exploration-class ECLSS, such that these systems may be tested, proven, and refined for eventual deployment on deep space human exploration missions. This paper will provide an updated status on the testbed development including hardware and ISS vehicle integration progress to date as well as future plans for efforts to design, select, build, test and fly Exploration ECLSS on the ISS.

Graphene-based materials have allowed fundamental advances in fields such as energy storage, electronics development, material science, optics, medicine, and water processing due to their unique two-dimensional structure, mechanical robustness, large surface, and high conductivity. However, little to no effort has been devoted to exploiting and studying these materials to develop new water technologies suited for spacecraft applications. One such application is the potential use of graphene-based materials as filtration media for reclaimed water. Therefore, studying the adsorptive performance of these new materials becomes crucial in identifying the opportunity to replace/upgrade state-of-the-art filtration media currently used in space vehicles with water recovery capability; especially if consumable requirements can be lessened as a result of extended filtration capacity. This early Life-Support-Systems investigation pioneers in graphene research by testing a number of graphene-based materials in comparative adsorption and antimicrobial experiments where contaminant removal efficiency, maximum adsorption capacity, and bacterial reduction are probed. This preliminary investigation informs on the practicality of using graphene-based materials as filtration media and provides a discussion on the scaling-up and optimization of this prospective filtration technology for spacecraft potable water systems.

The new space suit being developed for exploration EVAs on the surface of the Moon and in microgravity environments is referred to as xEMU. A government reference model had been developed and has undergone extensive functional and environmental testing. This suit contains new upgrades from the current EMU on ISS, such as integrated speakers and microphones, eliminating the need for astronauts to wear a Communications Carrier Assembly (CCA) on their heads during spacewalks. However, this design approach results in speaker-to-microphone acoustic coupling and communications echo and feedback. A proposed solution to this issue is to replace the integrated open speakers with an astronaut worn bone conduction headset for audio capabilities while on EVA to receive incoming voice communications from Mission Control and other EVA or IVA crew members. This would eliminate the acoustic coupling and echo effect while being more ergonomically sound than the current CCA and leave the ear open to suit-ambient sound for situational awareness. A human-in-the-loop evaluation was performed, comparing five commercially available bone conduction headsets, to evaluate comfort, fit, and adjustability for long-duration wear. Five engineering test subjects with different head sizes were utilized to wear the headsets for six hours and provide succinct feedback and score the headsets on a variety of factors, to help determine which of the headsets performed the best and could advance to future bone conduction audio testing. Three of the headsets were well-received among the diverse group of subjects, and at least one of these will advance to further testing to be considered for future use under the xEMU helmet for exploration EVAs. Rating results and evaluation methods for this bone conduction headset evaluation will be presented.

Providing residual microbial control to spacecraft potable water systems with ionic silver-based biocide prevails as an active research area in the Life Support System community since current and future spacecraft architectures continue to baseline biocidal silver for their potable water systems. Delivering ionic silver to potable water lines results in a more advantageous scheme from mass-requirement, hardware-constraint, antimicrobial-effectiveness, and chemical-safety perspectives than other biocidal options. Nevertheless, material compatibility of wetted components and biocidal silver must be carefully considered for preventing depletion of silver ions (especially by metal surfaces) and avoid nonbiocidal concentrations in processed water. Therefore, the selection and/or design of silver-compatible materials for wetted system components is still not clear, and fully-developed material guidelines have not been laid down. As part of a multitiered effort that looks at heritage materials, new processes and/or alternative materials, polymeric coatings are being considered as one potential solution to prevent silver-ion losses promoted by the affinity that legacy metals have towards silver ions. Previous research revealed that polymeric coatings can provide a dense barrier against silver depletion in metal-liquid interfaces for up to 16 weeks with little effect on bulk silver concentration. This publication provides new findings on the performance of eleven chemically-resistant coatings applied on Titanium Grade 2, Inconel 718, and 316L Stainless Steel coupons. The testing involved in this investigation continued to subject the coated samples to a stagnant volume of silver-containing water at a surface-area-to-volume ratio of 2.0 cm-1 for longer soaking periods and repeated exposure stages. The new results show that most of the coatings maintained silver concentration between 200 and 400 part-per-billion after 52 weeks, and the same performance persisted during sequential exposures to silver-containing water. This re-exposure process also allowed better silver ion retention with the poor-performing coatings from the first exposure stage. Additionally, the propensity of the coatings to release organic carbon into the water was preliminary investigated and discussed.

Exploration class missions will have communication latency requiring crew members to make decisions more autonomously, with less support from ground personnel. Therefore, new software is needed to provide crew the ability to not only visualize their countermeasures data, but to also derive comprehensive, nuanced, and multidisciplinary insights regarding the health and performance informatics throughout a mission. The Multidisciplinary Analytics, Visualization, and Reporting Interface for Integrated Countermeasures (MAVRIIC) software seeks to establish a centralized approach to countermeasure data visualization that will facilitate a more holistic understanding of crew members' well-being and performance and enable the development of informed and autonomous decision-making support systems aligned with the evolving requirements of Exploration missions. The culmination of MAVRIIC phase 1 (end of FY23) marked the release of a full-stack, cloud-based ground tool displaying visualizations of in-flight exercise data, exercise ground testing, and exercise MEDB reports. Phase 2 of MAVRIIC (FY24) focuses on beginning the expansion of data contents to domains outside of exercise, including functional fitness, sensorimotor, food/nutrition, radiation, bone, and cardio/vision. Phase 3 and phase 4 will comprise enhanced analytics integration and initiation of flight tool development for infusion into the Artemis Program and eventually the Mars Transit Habitat.

The International Space Station (ISS) has enabled a continuous human presence in space since November 2000. The ISS is in low Earth orbit, facilitating regular resupply missions to deliver air, water, food, spare parts, and science experiments. NASA’s Moon to Mars campaign seeks to return humans to the Moon and prepare for crewed missions to Mars. Increased distance from Earth poses logistical challenges to provide all resources needed by humans for deep space missions. NASA Ames Research Center is conducting a series of synthetic biology projects to test the use of microbes for on-demand biosynthesis of human micronutrients. The BioNutrients spaceflight experiments test an implementation concept to produce fermented food products in which microbe growth enhances micronutrient content. On-demand production of carotenoids was engineered into two yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) strains that have been tested in nearly 5 years of storage. One of the BioNutrients strains will be incorporated into the Lunar Explorer Instrument for Space Biology Applications (LEIA) project. LEIA is developing an instrument suite to be delivered to the lunar south pole region by the Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program. The LEIA instrument suite will be used to measure multiple yeast strains for growth, metabolic activity, and synthetic biology-enabled production of carotenoids, while taking real time measurements of biologically relevant radiation exposure on the lunar surface. LEIA data will be used to assess the impact of lunar surface radiation and reduced gravity on the production of engineered traits.

The goal of this work is to review the population accommodation principles and methodologies NASA Johnson Space Center has developed for the spacesuit, vehicle hardware, and habitats. NASA has defined the target population characteristics in the Human-System Integration Requirements based on the US Army Anthropometric Survey (ANSUR) database. However, the data was screened to select the cases of 30-50 year old subjects, given the historical characteristics of the crew. Further, accommodation ranges were defined for critical body measurements, as NASA aims to accommodate 1st percentile female to 99th percentile male of the crew-like population. The historical truncation thresholds of 5-95th percentiles were not used. This ensured that the accommodation range was not limited and accounted for the current astronaut population. A simulation study also showed that less than 68% of the population may have remained after multiple measurement truncations due to the anthropometry covariance patterns if the narrower range was retained. The ranges were also adjusted for long-term trends of body shape changes as predicted by the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Overall, the requirements were deemed critical to ensure the fit and accommodation of the new suit and space hardware. The requirements have specifically defined boundary cases for verifications and validations, of which the details have proven useful as standards across the different space programs. The specific use and benefits will be further discussed through case studies at the presentation.
