This study examines cybersecurity awareness in universities by analyzing related research output across different disciplines at the University of Johannesburg. The diffusion of innovation theory is used in this study as a theoretical framework to explain how cybersecurity awareness diffuses across disciplines. The University of Johannesburg Institutional Repository database was the data source for this study. Variations in cybersecurity keyword searches and topic modeling techniques were used to identify the frequency and distribution of research output across different disciplines. The study reveals that cybersecurity awareness has diffused across various disciplines, including non-computer science disciplines such as business, accounting, and social sciences. However, there are significant differences in cybersecurity awareness across academic disciplines, highlighting the need for targeted efforts to promote cybersecurity awareness in underrepresented academic disciplines and for intra and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Using methods of community-based participatory research, a prospective randomized controlled trial of a violence prevention program based on Latino cultural values was implemented with elementary school children in a Mexican American community. Community members participated in intervention program selection, implementation, and data collection. High-risk students who participated in the program had greater nonviolent self-efficacy and demonstrated greater endorsement of program values than did high-risk students in the control group. This collaborative partnership was able to combine community-based participatory research with a rigorous study design and provide sustained benefit to community partners. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Biomedical surface-associated infections and thrombus formation are two major clinical issues that challenge patient safety and patient the fate of a medical device in the body . Single platform multifunctional surfaces are critical to address both these indwelling medical device-related problems. In this work, bio-inspired approaches are employed to fabricate a polymer composite with a versatile surface that can reduce bacterial infections and platelet adhesion in vitro. In the first bio-inspired approach, the functionality of nitric oxide (NO) produced by endothelial cell lining of blood vessels is mimicked through incorporation of S-nitroso-N-acetylpenicillamine (SNAP) within a CarboSil-2080A™ (CarboSil) polymer composite matrix. The second approach involves utilizing mussel adhesive chemistry, via polydopamine (PDA) to immobilize polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) particles on the polymer composite surface. The PTFE coating facilitates a decrease in wettability by making the polymer composite surface highly hydrophobic (contact angle ca. 120°). The surface of the fabricated polymer composite , CarboSil SNAP-PTFE, had a cobblestone-like structured appearance as characterized through scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Water contact angle (WCA) and surface tension measurements indicated no significant coating losses after 24 h under physiological conditions. NO surface flux was measured and analyzed for 5 days using a chemiluminescence-based nitric oxide analyzer and was found to be within the physiological range. CarboSil SNAP-PTFE reduced adhered bacteria (99.3 ± 0.5% for Gram-positive S. aureus and 99.1 ± 0.4% for Gram-negative E. coli) in a 24 h in vitro study. SEM analysis showed the absence of biofilm formation on CarboSil SNAP-PTFE polymer composites, while present on CarboSil in 24 h exposure to S. aureus. Platelet adhesion was reduced by 83.3 ± 4.5%. Hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) is an endogenous gasotransmitter in the human body involved in various physiological functions including cytoprotection, maintaining homeostasis, and regulation of organ development. Therefore, H 2 S-releasing polymers that can imitate endogenous H 2 S release can offer great therapeutic potential. Despite decades of research, the use of H 2 S donors in medical device applications is mostly unexplored largely due to the challenge of the steady H 2 S release from a suitable polymeric platform that does not compromise the normal cellular functions of the host. In this work, an exogenous H 2 S release system was developed by integrating sodium sulfide (Na 2 S), a common H 2 S donor, into a medical-grade thermoplastic silicone-polycarbonate-urethane polymer, Carbosil 20 80A (hereon as Carbosil), via a facile solvent evaporation technique. The spatial distribution and nature of Na 2 S in Carbosil were characterized through X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectroscopy and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), indicating an amorphous phase shift upon incorporating Na 2 S in Carbosil. The composite, Na 2 S-Carbosil, is responsive in physiological conditions, resulting in sustained H 2 S release measured for 3 h. In vitro cellular responses of 3T3 mouse fibroblasts, human lung epithelial (HLE), and primary human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) were investigated. Fibroblast cells showed cell proliferation in 24 h and complete cell migration in 42 h in vitro . The Na 2 S-Carbosil composites were cytocompatible toward HUVEC and HLE cells. This study provided important in vitro proof of concept that warrants potential use of these H 2 S-releasing platforms in engineering biomedical devices, tissue engineering, and drug delivery applications.

Patients with Stage 5 chronic kidney disease who are on hemodialysis (HD) remain in a chronic inflammatory state, characterized by the accumulation of uremic toxins that induce endothelial damage and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Our aim was to examine microvesicles (MVs), monocyte subpopulations, and angiopoietins (Ang) to identify prognostic markers in HD patients with or without diabetes mellitus (DM). A total of 160 prevalent HD patients from 10 centers across Spain were obtained from the Biobank of the Nephrology Renal Network (Madrid, Spain): 80 patients with DM and 80 patients without DM who were matched for clinical and demographic criteria. MVs from plasma and several monocyte subpopulations (CD14 2+ /CD16 + , CD14 + /CD16 2+ ) were analyzed by flow cytometry, and the plasma concentrations of Ang1 and Ang2 were quantified by ELISA. Data on CVD were gathered over the 5.5 yr after these samples were obtained. MV level, monocyte subpopulations (CD14 + /CD16 2+ and CD14 2+ /CD16 + ), and Ang2-to-Ang1 ratios increased in HD patients with DM compared with non-DM patients. Moreover, MV level above the median (264 MVs/µl) was associated independently with greater mortality. MVs, monocyte subpopulations, and Ang2-to-Ang1 ratio can be used as predictors for CVD. In addition, MV level has a potential predictive value in the prevention of CVD in HD patients. Every community is unique and has special strengths and health-related needs, such that a community-based participatory research partnership cannot be formed and implemented in a predetermined, step-by-step manner. In this article, we describe how the Community Partnership Model (CPM), designed to allow flexible movement back and forth through all action phases, can be adapted to a variety of communities. Originally developed for nursing practice, the CPM has evolved into approaches for the collaborative initiation and maintenance of community partnerships. The model is informed by the recognition that cultural, social, economic, and knowledge backgrounds may vary greatly between nurse researchers and their community partners. The Familias En Acción violence prevention project exemplifies the use of the CPM in a transcultural partnership formation and implementation process. The collaborative approaches of the model guide community and research partners to interconnect and move flexibly through all partnership phases, thereby facilitating sustainability and community self-advocacy.

Measurement of the effectiveness of violence prevention interventions is in a developmental phase. Social capital provides a framework within which to examine this topic from a community perspective. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among three measures of social capital and attitudes about violence among Mexican-Americans. A cross-sectional survey was conducted of households randomly selected by block in two adjacent Mexican-American communities. Demographics, attitudes about and experiences with violence, and three measures of social capital (collective efficacy, neighborhood block conditions, community integration) were assessed. Descriptive, bivariate, and logistic regression analyses were used to examine indicators of violence attitudes and experiences. Of the 473 respondents who completed the survey, 323 (68%) were female, 393 (83%) were Mexican-American, 395 (84%) were born in the US, and 346 (72%) owned their own homes. Participants with high measures of collective efficacy were 1.68 times more likely to have negative attitudes about violence (CI 1.06-2.65) and 15.25 times more likely to have negative attitudes about couple violence (CI 9.05-25.74). Participants with high scores on neighborhood block conditions were 2.33 times more likely to have negative attitudes about couple violence (CI 1.40-3.87). Scores on community integration were not significant indicators of participants' tolerance and experiences with violence. Two measures of social capital were positively associated with and predictive of negative attitudes toward violence. The results suggest that primary violence prevention programs in Mexican-American communities should focus on strengthening a sense of collective efficacy and improving neighborhood conditions.

Reporting the case of a patient diagnosed with an abscess of the seminal vesicle, treated successfully through parasacral transgluteal percutaneous aspiration lead by computerized axial tomography (CAT). This represents the first case in the literature of percutaneous access to the seminal vesicles through this route. CAT is an effective diagnostic test which makes non-surgical treatment for this type of abscess simpler. A review is made of the literature with regard to the etiology, diagnosis and therapy of seminal vesicle abscesses.
