We present an improved background model for the Large Area X-ray Proportional Counter (LAXPC) detectors on-board AstroSat. Because of the large collecting area and high pressure, the LAXPC instrument has a large background count rate, which varies during the orbit. Apart from the variation with latitude and longitude during the orbit there is a prominent quasi-diurnal variation which has not been modelled earlier. Using over 5 years of background observations, we determined the period of the quasi-diurnal variation to be 84495 s and using this period, it is possible to account for the variation and also identify time intervals where the fit is not good. These lead to a significant improvement in the background model. The quasi-diurnal variation can be ascribed to the changes in charged particle flux in the near Earth orbit., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJS

With its large effective area at hard X-rays, high time resolution and having co-aligned other instruments, AstroSat/LAXPC was designed to usher in a new era in rapid variability studies and wide spectral band measurements of the X-ray binaries. Over the last five years, the instrument has successfully achieved to a significant extent these Science goals. In the coming years, it is poised to make more important discoveries. The Large Area X-ray Proportional Counter (LAXPC) instrument on-board AstroSat has three nominally identical detectors for timing and spectral studies in the energy range of 3--80 keV. The performance of these detectors during the five years after the launch of AstroSat is described. Currently, only one of the detector is working nominally. The variation in pressure, energy resolution, gain and background with time are discussed. The capabilities and limitations of the instrument are described. The Be X-ray Binary 4U 0115+63 was observed by Large Area X-ray Proportional Counter (LAXPC) instrument on AstroSat on 2015 October 24 during the peak of a giant Type II outburst. Prominent intensity oscillations at ~ 1 and ~ 2 mHz frequency were detected during the outburst. Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) observations made during the same outburst also show mHz quasi periodic oscillations (QPOs). Details of the oscillations and their characteristics deduced from LAXPC/AstroSat and NuSTAR observations are reported in this paper. Analysis of the archival Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE)/Proportional Counter Array (PCA) data during 2001-11 also show presence of mHz QPOs during some of the outbursts and details of these QPOs are also reported. Possible models to explain the origin of the mHz oscillations are examined. Similar QPOs, albeit at higher frequencies, have been reported from other neutron star and black hole sources and both may have a common origin. We present results from an observation of the Low Mass X-ray Binary 4U 1636-536 obtained with the LAXPC instrument aboard AstroSat. The observations of 4U 1636-536 made during the performance verification phase of AstroSat showed seven thermonuclear X-ray bursts in a total exposure of ~ 65 ks over a period of about two consecutive days. Moreover, the light curve of 4U 1636-536 revealed the presence of a rare triplet of X-ray bursts, having a wait time of about 5.5 minutes between second and the third bursts. We also present results from time-resolved spectroscopy performed during these seven X-ray bursts. In addition, we have also detected a transient Quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) at ~ 5 Hz. However, we did not find any evidence of kilo-hertz QPOs and/or X-ray burst oscillations, perhaps due to the hard spectral state of the source during this observation., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

In this work, we present a $\sim$90 ks continuous monitoring of the Galactic micro-quasar GRS 1915+105 with AstroSat when the source undergoes a major transition from a non-variable, $\chi$ class (similar to radio-quiet $\chi$ class) to a structured, large amplitude, periodic heartbeat state (similar to $\rho$ class). We show that such transition takes place via an intermediate state when the large-amplitude, irregular variability of the order of hundreds of seconds in the soft X-ray band turned into a 100-150 sec regular, structured, nearly periodic flares. The properties of a strong low-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (LF QPO) in the frequency range 3-5 Hz also evolve marginally during these variability transitions. We also study time-lag and rms spectra at the QPO and harmonic component and the dynamic power spectra. We note few important differences between the heartbeat state and the $\rho$ class. Interestingly, the time-averaged LF QPO properties in the hard X-ray band is relatively stable in three states when compared to the significant evolution observed in the slow variability properties at mHz frequencies. Such relative stability of LF QPOs implies the inner disk-corona coupled accretion flow which determines the LF QPO properties, may be uninterrupted by the launch of long, large-amplitude flares., Comment: 17 pages, 41 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

It has recently been shown that the persistent emission of a neutron star low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) evolves during a thermonuclear (type-I) X-ray burst. The reason of this evolution, however, is not securely known. This uncertainty can introduce significant systematics in the neutron star radius measurement using burst spectra, particularly if an unknown but significant fraction of the burst emission, which is reprocessed, contributes to the changes in the persistent emission during the burst. Here, by analyzing individual burst data of AstroSat/LAXPC from the neutron star LMXB 4U 1728--34 in the soft state, we show that the burst emission is not significantly reprocessed by a corona covering the neutron star. Rather, our analysis suggests that the burst emission enhances the accretion disk emission, possibly by increasing the accretion rate via disk. This enhanced disk emission, which is Comptonized by a corona covering the disk, can explain an increased persistent emission observed during the burst. This finding provides an understanding of persistent emission components, and their interaction with the thermonuclear burst emission. Furthermore, since burst photons are not significantly reprocessed, non-burst and burst emissions can be reliably separated, which is required to reduce systematic uncertainties in the stellar radius measurement., Comment: 8 pages, 3 tables, 1 figure, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

We present X-ray spectral and timing behavior of Cyg X-3 as observed by AstroSat during the onset of a giant radio flare on 01-02 April 2017. Within a time-scale of few hours, the source shows a transition from the hypersoft state (HPS) to a more luminous state (we termed as the very high state) which coincides with the time of the steep rise in radio flux density by an order of magnitude. Modeling the SXT and LAXPC spectra jointly in 0.5-70.0 keV, we found that the first few hours of the observation is dominated by the HPS with no significant counts above 17 keV. Later, an additional flat powerlaw component suddenly appeared in the spectra which extends to very high energies with the powerlaw photon index of 1.49 +/- 0.04. Such a flat powerlaw component has never been reported from Cyg X-3. Interestingly the fitted powerlaw model in 25-70 keV, when extrapolated to the radio frequency, predicts the radio flux density consistent with the trend measured from RATAN-600 telescope at 11.2 GHz. This provides a direct evidence of the synchrotron origin of flat X-ray powerlaw component and the most extensive monitoring of the broadband X-ray behavior at the moment of decoupling the giant radio jet base from the compact object in Cyg X-3. We present here results from the X-ray timing and spectral analysis of the X-ray binary Cyg X-3 using observations from Large Area X-ray Proportional Counter (LAXPC) on-board AstroSat. Consecutive lightcurves observed over a period of one year show the binary orbital period of 17253.56 +/- 0.19 sec. Another low-amplitude, slow periodicity of the order of 35.8 +/- 1.4 days is observed which may be due to the orbital precession as suggested earlier by Molteni et al. (1980). During the rising binary phase, power density spectra from different observations during flaring hard X-ray state show quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) at ~5-8 mHz, ~12-14 mHz, ~18-24 mHz frequencies at the minimum confidence of 99%. However, during the consecutive binary decay phase, no QPO is detected up to 2-sigma significance. Energy-dependent time-lag spectra show soft lag (soft photons lag hard photons) at the mHz QPO frequency and the fractional rms of the QPO increases with the photon energy. During the binary motion, the observation of mHz QPOs during the rising phase of the flaring hard state may be linked to the increase in the supply of the accreting material in the disk and corona via stellar wind from the companion star. During the decay phase, the compact source moves in the outer wind region causing the decrease in the supply of material for accretion. This may cause weakening of the mHz QPOs below the detection limit. Large Area X-ray Proportional Counter (LAXPC) is one of the major AstroSat payloads. LAXPC instrument will provide high time resolution X-ray observations in 3 to 80 keV energy band with moderate energy resolution. We have done extensive calibration of all LAXPC detectors using radioactive sources as well as GEANT4 simulation of LAXPC detectors. The low mass X-ray binary 4U 1728-24 was observed with AstroSat/LAXPC on 8th March 2016. Data from a randomly chosen one orbit of over 3 ks was analyzed for detection of rapid intensity variations. We found that the source intensity was nearly steady but towards the end of the observation a typical Type-1 burst was detected. Dynamical power spectrum of the data in the 3 to 20 keV band, reveals presence of a kHz Quasi-Periodic Oscillation (QPO) whose frequency drifted from around 815 Hz at the beginning of the observation to about 850 Hz just before the burst. The QPO is also detected in the 10 to 20 keV band, which was not obtainable by earlier RXTE observations of this source. Even for such a short observation with a drifting QPO frequency, the time-lag between the 5 to 10 and 10 to 20 keV bands can be constrained to be less than 100 microseconds. The Type-1 burst that lasted for about 20 secs had a typical profile. During the first four seconds dynamic power spectra reveal a burst oscillation whose frequency increased from 361.5 to 363.5 Hz. This is consistent with the earlier results obtained with RXTE/PCA, showing the same spin frequency of the neutron star. The present results demonstrate the capability of LAXPC instrument for detecting millisecond variability even from short observations. We present the calibration and background model for the Large Area X-ray Proportional Counter (LAXPC) detectors on-board AstroSat. LAXPC instrument has three nominally identical detectors to achieve large collecting area. These detectors are independent of each other and in the event analysis mode, they record the arrival time and energy of each photon that is detected. The detectors have a time-resolution of 10 $\mu$s and a dead-time of about 42 $\mu$s. This makes LAXPC ideal for timing studies. The energy resolution and peak channel to energy mapping were obtained from calibration on ground using radioactive sources coupled with GEANT4 simulations of the detectors. The response matrix was further refined from observations of the Crab X-ray source after launch. At around 20 keV the energy resolution of detector is about 10--15\%, while the combined effective area of the 3 detectors is about 6000 cm$^2$., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJS

We report the first analysis of data from AstroSat/LAXPC observations of Cygnus X-1 in January 2016. LAXPC spectra reveals that the source was in the canonical hard state, represented by a prominent thermal Comptonization component having a photon index of 1.8 and high temperature kT of electron > 60 keV along with weak reflection and possible disk emission. The power spectrum can be characterized by two broad lorentzian functions centered at 0.4 and 3 Hz. The r.m.s of the low frequency component decreases from 15% at around 4 keV to 10% at around 50 keV, while that of the high frequency one varies less rapidly from 13.5% to 11.5% in the same energy range. The time lag between the hard (20 to 40 keV) and soft (5 to 10 keV) bands varies in a step-like manner being nearly constant at 50 Milli-seconds from 0.3 to 0.9 Hz, decreasing to 8 Milli-seconds from 2 to 5 Hz and finally dropping to 2 Milli-seconds for higher frequencies. The time lags increase with energy for both the low and high frequency components. The event mode LAXPC data allows for flux resolved spectral analysis on a time-scale of 1 second, which clearly shows that the photon index increased from 1.72 to 1.80 as the flux increased by nearly a factor of two. ASTROSAT is India's first satellite fully devoted to astronomical observations covering a wide spectral band from optical to hard X-rays by a complement of 4 co-aligned instruments and a Scanning Sky X-ray Monitor. One of the instruments is Large Area X-ray Proportional Counter with 3 identical detectors. In order to assess the performance of this instrument, a balloon experiment with two prototype Large Area X-ray Proportional Counters (LAXPC) was carried out on 2008 April 14. The design of these LAXPCs was similar to those on the ASTROSAT except that their field of view (FOV) was 3$^{\circ}$ $\times$ 3$^{\circ}$ versus FOV of 1$^{\circ}$ $\times$ 1$^{\circ}$ for the LAXPCs on the ASTROSAT. The LAXPCs are aimed at the timing and spectral studies of X-ray sources in 3-80 keV region. In the balloon experiment, the LAXPC, associated electronics and support systems were mounted on an oriented platform which could be pre-programmed to track any source in the sky. A brief description of the LAXPC design, laboratory tests, calibration and the detector characteristics is presented here. The details of the experiment and background counting rates of the 2 LAXPCs at the float altitude of about 41 km are presented in different energy bands. The bright black hole X-ray binary Cygnus X-1 (Cyg X-1) was observed in the experiment for $\sim$ 3 hours. We present the first quick look analysis of data from nine {\it AstroSat}'s LAXPC observations of GRS 1915+105 during March 2016 when the source had the characteristics of being in Radio-quiet $\chi$ class. We find that a simple empirical model of a disk blackbody emission, with Comptonization and a broad Gaussian Iron line can fit the time averaged 3--80 keV spectrum with a systematic uncertainty of 1.5\% and a background flux uncertainty of 4\%. A simple deadtime-corrected Poisson noise level spectrum matches well with the observed high frequency power spectra till 50 kHz and as expected the data show no significant high frequency ($> 20$ Hz) features. Energy dependent power spectra reveal a strong low frequency (2 - 8 Hz) Quasi-periodic oscillation (LFQPO) and its harmonic along with broad band noise. The QPO frequency changes rapidly with flux (nearly 4 Hz in ~ 5 hours). With increasing QPO frequency, an excess noise component appears significantly in the high energy regime (> 8 keV). At the QPO frequencies, the time-lag as a function of energy has a non-monotonic behavior such that the lags decrease with energy till about 15 -20 keV and then increase for higher energies. These first look results benchmark the performance of LAXPC at high energies and confirms that its data can be used for more sophisticated analysis such as flux or frequency-resolved spectro-timing studies., Comment: 9 pages, 11 figures

Using a pulse-fit method, we investigate the spectral lags between the traditional gamma-ray band (50-400 keV) and the X-ray band (6-25 keV) for 8 GRBs with known redshifts (GRB 010921, GRB 020124, GRB 020127, GRB 021211, GRB 030528, GRB 040924, GRB 041006, GRB 050408) detected with the WXM and FREGATE instruments aboard the HETE-2 satellite. We find several relations for the individual GRB pulses between the spectral lag and other observables, such as the luminosity, pulse duration, and peak energy (Epeak). The obtained results are consistent with those for BATSE, indicating that the BATSE correlations are still valid at lower energies (6-25 keV). Furthermore, we find that the photon energy dependence for the spectral lags can reconcile the simple curvature effect model. We report the results of radio and X-ray observations of the high mass X-ray binary 2S 0114+650, made with the Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope and the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer respectively. No emission was detected at radio wavelengths. The neutral hydrogen column density was found to vary over the orbital period, while no variability over the the super-orbital period was observed. Here we report the localizations and properties of four short-duration GRBs localized by the High Energy Transient Explorer 2 satellite (HETE-2): GRBs 010326B, 040802, 051211 and 060121, all of which were detected by the French Gamma Telescope (Fregate) and localized with the Wide-field X-ray Monitor (WXM) and/or Soft X-ray Camera (SXC) instruments. We discuss eight possible criteria for determining whether these GRBs are "short population bursts" (SPBs) or "long population bursts" (LPBs). These criteria are (1) duration, (2) pulse widths, (3) spectral hardness, (4) spectral lag, (5) energy Egamma radiated in gamma rays (or equivalently, the kinetic energy E_KE of the GRB jet), (6) existence of a long, soft bump following the burst, (7) location of the burst in the host galaxy, and (8) type of host galaxy. In particular, we have developed a likelihood method for determining the probability that a burst is an SPB or a LPB on the basis of its T90 duration alone. A striking feature of the resulting probability distribution is that the T90 duration at which a burst has an equal probability of being a SPB or a LPB is T90 = 5 s, not T90 = 2 s, as is often used. All four short-duration bursts discussed in detail in this paper have T90 durations in the Fregate 30-400 keV energy band of 1.90, 2.31, 4.25, and 1.97 sec, respectively, yielding probabilities P(S|T90) = 0.97, 0.91, 0.60, and 0.95 that these bursts are SPBs on the basis of their T90 durations alone. All four bursts also have spectral lags consistent with zero. Gamma-ray bursts (GRB), at least those with a duration longer than a few seconds are the most energetic events in the Universe and occur at cosmological distances. The ECLAIRs micro-satellite, to be launched in 2009, will provide multi-wavelength observations of GRB, to study their astrophysics and to use them as cosmological probes. Furthermore in 2009 ECLAIRs is expected to be the only space borne instrument capable of providing a GRB trigger in near real-time with sufficient localization accuracy for GRB follow-up observations with the powerful ground based spectroscopic telescopes available by then. A "Phase A study" of the ECLAIRs project has recently been launched by the French Space Agency CNES, aiming at a detailed mission design and selection for flight in 2006. The ECLAIRs mission is based on a CNES micro-satellite of the "Myriade" family and dedicated ground-based optical telescopes. The satellite payload combines a 2 sr field-of-view coded aperture mask gamma-camera using 6400 CdTe pixels for GRB detection and localization with 10 arcmin precision in the 4 to 50 keV energy band, together with a soft X-ray camera for onboard position refinement to 1 arcmin. We present the first detailed low frequency radio measurements of the galactic microquasar GRS1915+105 with GMRT. Simultaneous observations were carried out at 610 and 244 MHz. Our data does not show any signature of spectral turn over even at low radio frequency of 244 MHz. We propose that while the radio emission at high radio frequencies could predominantly come from compact jets, the emission at lower frequency originates in the lobes at the end of the jet which acts like a reservoir of low energy electrons., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

We have conducted low-frequency radio observations with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) of 40 new hard X-ray sources discovered by the INTEGRAL satellite. This survey was conducted in order, to study radio emissions from these sources, to provide precise position and to identify new microquasar candidates. From our observations we find that 24 of the X-ray sources have radio candidates within the INTEGRAL error circle. Based on the radio morphology, variability and information available from different wavelengths, we categorize them as seventeen Galactic sources (4 unresolved, 7 extended, 6 extended sources in diffuse region) and seven extragalactic sources (2 unresolved, 5 extended). Detailed account for seventeen of these sources was presented in earlier paper. Based on the radio data for the remaining sources at 0.61 GHz, and the available information from NVSS, DSS, 2MASS and NED, we have identified possible radio counterparts for the hard X-ray sources. The three unresolved sources, viz IGR J17303$-$0601, IGR J17464$-$3213, and IGR J18406$-$0539 are discussed in detail. These sources have been identified as X-ray binaries with compact central engine and variable in X-ray and in the radio, and are most likely microquasar candidates. Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) fall into two classes: short-hard and long-soft bursts. The latter are now known to have X-ray and optical afterglows, to occur at cosmological distances in star-forming galaxies, and to be associated with the explosion of massive stars. In contrast, the distance scale, the energy scale, and the progenitors of short bursts have remained a mystery. Here we report the discovery of a short-hard burst whose accurate localization has led to follow-up observations that have identified the X-ray afterglow and (for the first time) the optical afterglow of a short-hard burst. These, in turn, have led to identification of the host galaxy of the burst as a late-type galaxy at z=0.16 showing that at least some short-hard bursts occur at cosmological distances in the outskirts of galaxies, and are likely to be due to the merging of compact binaries., Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures. The INTEGRAL observatory has discovered a variety of hard X-ray sources in the Galactic plane since its launch. Using GMRT, we have made repeated observations of these sources to search for the radio counterparts of seventeen of them at low frequencies. The source positions were taken from the various ATEL and IAUC reporting their discovery. Possible radio counterparts for seven of these sources namely, IGR J06074+2205, IGR J15479-4529, IGR J16479-4514, IGR J17091-3624, IGR J18027-1455, IGR J18539+0727 and IGR J21247+5058 were detected within 3$\sigma$ of the position uncertainty derived from the INTEGRAL observations. The offset in the radio position was calculated using the positions mentioned in the ATEL. We have also analyzed the available NVSS images for a few of these fields at 1.4 GHz along with our observations. In this paper we present the radio images and the best fit positions for the positive detections. The X-ray variability for few of the sources within the time scales of 100 s to 1 ks as seen in the RXTE/PCA light curves suggests their Galactic origin and possible binary nature. We present results of monitoring observations of the micro-quasars CygnusX-1 and Cygnus X-3 at 0.61 and 1.28 GHz. The observations were performed with Giant Meter-wave Radio Telescope, GMRT, between 2003 June and 2005 January. Variable, unresolved sources were found in both cases. Cyg X-1 was detected in about half of the observations, with a median flux density about 7 mJy at each frequency. The results show clearly that there is a break in the spectrum above 1.28 GHz. The variations in Cyg X-1 may be due to refractive interstellar scintillation. Cyg X-3 was detected in each observation, and varied by a factor of 4. For this source, models of the scintillation suggest a very long timescale (of the order of 40 yr at 1.28 GHz), and therefore we believe that the variations are intrinsic to the source., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, accpeted in A&A

GRB 020124 and GRB 030323 constitute half the sample of gamma-ray bursts with a measured redshift greater than 3. This paper presents the temporal and spectral properties of these two gamma-ray bursts detected and localized with HETE-2. While they have nearly identical redshifts (z=3.20 for GRB 020124, and z=3.37 for GRB 030323), these two GRBs span about an order of magnitude in fluence, thus sampling distinct regions of the GRB luminosity function. The properties of these two bursts are compared with those of the bulk of the GRB population detected by HETE-2. We also discuss the energetics of GRB 020124 and GRB 030323 and show that they are compatible with the Epeak - Eiso relation discovered by Amati et al. (2002). Finally, we compute the maximum redshifts at which these bursts could have been detected by HETE-2 and we address various issues connected with the detection and localization of high-z GRBs., Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures, submitted to ApJ

Understanding of the transport in a Tokamak plasma is an important issue. Various mechanisms have been reported in the literature to relate the core phenomenon to edge phenomenon. Sawtooth and Mirnov oscillations caused by MHD instabilities are generally observed in Tokamak discharges. Observation of these effects in the visible radiation from outer edge may offer a possible means to understand the transport.Oscillations in the visible radiation from outer region of the plasma have been observed during recent Aditya discharges. Percentage modulation of these oscillations vary with the Lines of Sight (LOS) of the chords and surfaces on which they terminate. This has been found in both the low frequency (~1 kHz) oscillations that seem to correlate with sawteething in SXR signals and the higher frequency (~10 kHz) oscillations that correlate well with Mirnov signals indicative of m/n=2/1 mode rotation. This suggests that the extent to which the MHD instabilities in the central region of the plasma column are reflected in the edge radiation depends on the interaction of the plasma with the surface at the extremity of the LOS. The release of particle/ energy accompanying the MHD instabilities leads to a large influx of particles from such surfaces. Cross-bispectral analysis suggests that a mode (having frequency of ~20 kHz) is also generated due to the interaction of m/n=1/1 (~10 kHz, seen in SXR) and m/n=2/1 (~10 kHz, seen in Mirnov, Visible & Microwave Interferometer signals). By possible selection rules, this mode seems to be a m/n=3/2 mode. This mode is seen in Mirnov, Visible & Interferometer signals. Behaviour of these oscillations on various LOS and their relation to SXR&Mirnov signals can lead to an understanding of the transport phenomenon. We describe and discuss the global properties of 45 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) observed by HETE-2 during the first three years of its mission, focusing on the properties of X-Ray Flashes (XRFs) and X-ray-rich GRBs (XRRs). We find that the numbers of XRFs, XRRs, and GRBs are comparable. We find that the durations and the sky distributions of XRFs and XRRs are similar to those of GRBs. We also find that the spectral properties of XRFs and XRRs are similar to those of GRBs, except that the values of the peak energy $E^{\rm obs}_{\rm peak}$ of the burst spectrum in $\nu F_\nu$, the peak energy flux $\Fp$, and the energy fluence $S_E$ of XRFs are much smaller -- and those of XRRs are smaller -- than those of GRBs. Finally, we find that the distributions of all three kinds of bursts form a continuum in the [$S_E$(2-30 keV),$S_E$(30-400) keV]-plane, the [$S_E$(2-400 keV), $E_{\rm peak}$]-plane, and the [$F_{\rm peak}$(50-300 keV), $E_{\rm peak}$]-plane. We report High Energy Transient Explorer 2 (HETE-2) Wide Field X-ray Monitor/French Gamma Telescope observations of XRF030723 along with observations of the XRF afterglow made using the 6.5m Magellan Clay telescope and the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The observed peak energy E_pk_obs of the nu F_nu burst spectrum is found to lie within (or below) the WXM 2-25 keV passband at 98.5% confidence, and no counts are detected above 30 keV. Our best fit value is E_pk_obs=8.4+3.5/-3.4 keV. The ratio of X-ray to Gamma-ray flux for the burst follows a correlation found for GRBs observed with HETE-2, and the duration of the burst is similar to that typical of long-duration GRBs. If we require that the burst isotropic equivalent energy E_iso and E_pk_rest satisfy the relation discovered by Amati et al. (2002), a redshift of z=0.38+0.36/-0.18 can be determined, in agreement with constraints determined from optical observations. We are able to fit the X-ray afterglow spectrum and to measure its temporal fade. Although the best-fit fade is shallower than the concurrent fade in the optical, the spectral similarity between the two bands indicates that the X-ray fade may actually trace the optical fade. If this is the case, the late time rebrightening observed in the optical cannot be due to a supernova bump. We interpret the prompt and afterglow X-ray emission as arising from a jetted GRB observed off-axis and possibly viewed through a complex circumburst medium due to a progenitor wind., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, to appear in ApJ

An exceptionally intense gamma-ray burst, GRB030329, was detected and localized by the instruments on board the High Energy Transient Explorer satellite (HETE) at 11:37:14 UT on 29 March 2003. The burst consisted of two \~10s pulses of roughly equal brightness and an X-ray tail lasting >100s. The energy fluence in the 30-400 keV energy band was 1.08e-4 erg/cm2, making GRB030329 one of the brightest GRBs ever detected. Communication of a 2 arcmin error box 73 minutes after the burst allowed the rapid detection of a counterpart in the optical, X-ray, radio and the ensuing discovery of a supernova with most unusual characteristics. Analyses of the burst lightcurves reveal the presence of a distinct, bright, soft X-ray component underlying the main GRB: the 2-10 keV fluence of this component is ~7e-6 erg/cm2. The main pulses of GRB030329 were preceded by two soft, faint, non-thermal bumps. Both of these results have profound implications for the nature of GRB progenitors and for the use of GRBs as a probe of cosmology and the early universe. HETE-2 has placed severe constraints on any X-ray or optical afterglow of a short GRB. It has made it possible to explore the previously unknown behavior optical afterglows at very early times, and has opened up the era of high-resolution spectroscopy of GRB optical afterglows. We report HETE-2 WXM/FREGATE observations of the X-ray flash, XRF 020903. This event was extremely soft: the ratio log(S_X/S_gamma) = 0.7, where S_X and S_gamma are the fluences in the 2-30 and 30-400 keV energy bands, is the most extreme value observed so far by HETE-2. In addition, the spectrum has an observed peak energy E^{obs}_{peak} < 5.0 keV (99.7 % probability upper limit) and no photons were detected above ~10 keV. The burst is shorter at higher energies, which is similar to the behavior of long GRBs. We consider the possibility that the burst lies at very high redshift and that the low value of E^{obs}_{peak} is due to the cosmological redshift, and show that this is very unlikely. We find that the properties of XRF 020903 are consistent with the relation between the fluences S(7-30 keV) and S(30-400 keV) found by Barraud et al. for GRBs and X-ray-rich GRBs, and are consistent with the extension by a decade of the hardness-intensity correlation (Mallozzi et al. 1995) found by the same authors. Assuming that XRF 020903 lies at a redshift z = 0.25 as implied by the host galaxy of the candidate optical and radio afterglows of this burst, we find that the properties of XRF 020903 are consistent with an extension by a factor ~300 of the relation between the isotropic-equivalent energy E_iso and the peak E_peak of the nu F_nu spectrum (in the source frame of the burst) found by Amati et al. for GRBs. The results presented in this paper therefore provide evidence that XRFs, X-ray-rich GRBs, and GRBs form a continuum and are a single phenomenon. A bright, x-ray-rich GRB was detected by HETE-2 at 11:18:34.03 UT on 11 Dec 2002. The WXM localization was to 14' and relayed to the GCN 22 s after the start of the burst. The ground SXC localization was within 2' of R.A. 08h 09m 00s, Dec 06d 44' 20" (J2000). GRB021211 consists of a single, FRED-like pulse with t90s of 2.3 s (85-400 keV) and 8.5 s (2-10 keV). The peak photon number and photon energy fluxes in the 2-400 keV band, are 34.0 +/- 1.8 ph cm^-2 s^-1 and 1.68 +/- 0.11 x 10^-6 erg cm^-2 s^-1, respectively. The energy fluences in the 2-30 keV and 30-400 kev energy bands are S_X = 1.36 +/- 0.05 x 10^-6 erg cm^-2 and S_gamma 2.17 +/- 0.15 x 10^-6 erg cm^-2, respectively. Thus GRB021211 is an X-ray-rich GRB (S_X/S_gamma = 0.63 > 0.32). The spectrum is well-fit by a Band function (alpha = -0.805, beta = -2.37, E_peak = 46.8 keV). The prompt localization allowed the detection of an optical afterglow for what would otherwise have been an ``optically dark'' GRB. GRB 021211 demonstrates that some fraction of burst afterglows are ``optically dark'' because their optical afterglows at times > 1 hr after the burst are very faint, and thus have often escaped detection. The {\it HETE-2} (hereafter \HETE) French Gamma Telescope (FREGATE) and the Wide-field X-ray Monitor (WXM) instruments detected a short ($t_{50} = 360$ msec in the FREGATE 85-300 keV energy band), hard gamma-ray burst (GRB) that occurred at 1578.72 SOD (00:26:18.72 UT) on 31 May 2002. The WXM flight localization software produced a valid location in spacecraft (relative) coordinates. However, since no on-board real-time star camera aspect was available, an absolute localization could not be disseminated. A preliminary localization was reported as a GCN Position Notice at 01:54:22 UT, 88 min after the burst. Further ground analysis produced a refined localization, which can be expressed as a 90% confidence rectangle that is 67 arcminutes in RA and 43 arcminutes in Dec (90% confidence region), centered at RA = +15$^{\rm h}$ 14$^{\rm m}$ 45$^{\rm s}$, Dec = -19$^\circ$ 21\arcmin 35\arcsec (J2000). An IPN localization of the burst was disseminated 18 hours after the GRB (Hurley et al. 2002b). A refined IPN localization was disseminated $\approx$ 5 days after the burst. This hexagonal-shaped localization error region is centered on RA = 15$^{\rm h}$ 15$^{\rm m}$ 03.57$^{\rm s}$, -19$^\circ$ 24\arcmin 51.00\arcsec (J2000), and has an area of $\approx$ 22 square arcminutes (99.7% confidence region). The prompt localization of this short, hard GRB by \HETE and the anti-Sun pointing of the \HETE instruments, coupled with the refinement of the localization by the IPN, has made possible rapid follow-up observations of the burst at radio, optical, and X-ray wavelengths., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures. On September 21 at 18950.56 SOD (05:15:50.56) UT the FREGATE gamma-ray instrument on the High Energy Transient Explorer (HETE) detected a bright gamma-ray burst (GRB). The burst was also seen by the X-detector on the WXM X-ray instrument and was therefore well-localized in the X direction; however, the burst was outside the fully-coded field-of-view of the WXM Y-detector, and therefore information on the Y direction of the burst was limited. Cross-correlation of the HETE and Ulysses time histories yielded an Interplanetary Network (IPN) annulus that crosses the HETE error strip at a ~45 degree angle. The intersection of the HETE error strip and the IPN annulus produces a diamond-shaped error region for the location of the burst having an area of 310 square arcminutes. Based on the FREGATE and WXM light curves, the duration of the burst is characterized by a t90 = 18.4 s in the WXM 4 - 25 keV energy range, and 23.8 s and 21.8 s in the FREGATE 6 - 40 and 32 - 400 keV energy ranges, respectively. The fluence of the burst in these same energy ranges is 4.8 10^{-6}, 5.5 10^{-6}, and 11.4 10^{-6} erg cm^{-2}, respectively. Subsequent optical and radio observations by ground-based observers have identified the afterglow of GRB010921 and determined an apparent redshift of z = 0.450., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures.
