Abstract

Black Bengal goats are mainly reared by economically weak farmers under extensive/semi-intensive systems. This breed is very famous for excellent quality meat and high valued skin. At present, phenomenon of gradual shrinkage of grazing land is forcing farmers to adopt goat rearing by intensive management system (IMS). Therefore, assessment of production performance of goats under IMS would help to devise better management for higher profits. Goats managed under IMS revealed that from birth, body weight of animals increased linearly up to 2 ½ years of age, thereafter, body weight did not show any significant changes. Body weight was stabilized between 2-3 years of age. From birth to 3 months age body weight enhanced by 164%, subsequently by 152% from 3 to 6 months age, then by 14 and 28% in next 3 months intervals, which warranted targeting better management during 6-12 months of age to achieve more body mass production. Seasons non-significantly (P>0.05) influenced growth rate (g/day), highest in summer (30.78±5.30) and lowest in rainy (24.15±2.10). Male kids had higher (P<0.01) growth rate (29.72±2.62) than females kids (24.73±2.95). Reproduction showed higher proportions of female birth (60.17%) as compared to male (39.83%). Goats had reproductive efficiency of 50.98% singles, 43.14% twins and 5.88% triplets under IMS. The in-house production environment of IMS was stressful being THI 86-90 in summer and rainy seasons, and 77-80 in winter seasons. The flooring hygiene (1-4 scale) of goat houses in IMS ranged from 3.18±0.08 to 3.72±0.06 in wooden to concrete floors. It was recommended that targeting for higher growth rates during 6-12 months of age and increase in proportions of multiple births might enhance productivity and profitability of Black Bengal goat farming under IMS. Abstract

Optimum nutritional condition of dairy cows during the different stages of production is highly recommended. Production of high quality milk is the primary goal of every herdsman. However, improper nutrition of dairy cows leads to different unwanted ailments and disease losses. This becomes a burden for dairy owners. Most commonly, dairy cow undergoes negative energy balance (NEBL) condition due to improper dry matter intake (DMI). DMI in proper amount provides good nutrition for the dairy animals. There is a common trend of depressed DMI during the transition and the initial lactation period of high-producing animals. Following which elevated levels of non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), undesired body condition stages, lowered production performances, poor milk quality, and inferior udder health status of dairy cows are observed. Both over-conditioned and under-conditioned bodies of the dairy animal are more at risk of NEBL thereby posing a negative impact on behavioral and production performance. Abstract

Background: Dry period duration of dairy cow is considered as an important factor to maintain udder health and milk production. Methods: To investigate the effect of dry period duration (DPD) on udder health, milk production and body condition of dairy cows at lower Gangetic tropics, observations were taken from 25 Jersey crossbred cows which were divided into 2 comparable group viz: 1st group (11 cows), having 50 to 60 days DPD and 2nd group (14 cows), having more than 60 days DPD. Result: Statistically analyzed data revealed that milk somatic cell count, MCMT, milk pH and EC were significantly (P<0.01) varied between two group from second month onwards and continue up to 4th months of lactation. Critical analysis of battery tests clearly confirmed the diagnosis for occurring of subclinical mastitis with poor udder health status in 2nd group. Total milk production/day/cow were almost similar in both group in first month but second month onwards significantly (P<0.01) higher milk production was recorded in 1st than 2nd group. The milk composition parameters revealed non-significant difference between groups whereas milk quality parameter significantly (P<0.01) better in 1st than 2nd group. Initial BCS of dry cow of both groups were similar. But BCS at calving was significantly (P<0.05) higher in 2nd than 1st group with higher negative changes in BCS % in 2nd group as compared to 1st group. It can be concluded that dry period duration of 50-60 days is better over to prolonged dry period (>60 days). Suitable changes in BCS from dry period to calving is beneficial to get higher milk production, quality, better maintenance of body condition and udder health status of Jersey crossbred cows at tropical lower Gangetic region. Abstract

Background: In vitro embryo production is a valuable tool for understanding early mammalian development, therapeutic applications, excellent source for research in the field of developmental biology and production of valuable animals. The purpose of this study is to improve the production of in vitro cattle embryos using fibroblast and platelet derived growth factor as media supplement. Methods: Ovaries were collected from local abattoir in 0.9% saline (30-35C) supplemented with antibiotics. Cumulus oocyte complexes were aspirated, washed 5-6 times and placed in maturation media supplemented with growth factors and cultured in 5% CO2 incubator at 38.5C with maximum humidity. After 24 h oocytes were co-incubated with in vitro capacitated sperms for fertilization for 15-18 h and then presumptive zygotes were cultured for embryo development. Cleavage was observed after 40-42 h and embryos were cocultured with oviductal cells for 7-9 days. Result: The highest cleavage and blastocyst formation rates were 55.93±4.75, 57.06±4.78, 51.24±4.12 and 3.26±1.53, 2.42±1.02, 2.70±1.17 in FGF (1ng ml-1), PDGF (10 ng ml-1) and in combination of FGF and PDGF (1ng ml-1 each) respectively. It can be concluded that PDGF (10 ng ml-1) enhanced cleavage rate and FGF (1ng ml-1) enhanced blastocyst formation rate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Housing and socialization have always played a pivotal role on overall health and welfare of the young calves. Therefore, the study was undertaken to compare the performance of the calves when kept indoors in enclosures (Treatment, T) versus semi covered houses with provision of open space (Control, C), respectively. Calves in semi covered houses (C) was found to display profound results on faecal score (P<0.01) and body weight (P<0.05). Besides, the housing temperature in the treatment sheds was significantly higher (P<0.01) during the mornings in monsoon season although humidity was reportedly higher at all seasons; monsoon (P<0.01), post monsoon (P<0.05) and winters (P<0.01), respectively. The greatest THI were recorded in the month of July (76.72) in Control group (C) and August (79.67) in Treatment group. Besides with the highest THI (74.50±0.81, P<0.01) with elevated rectal temperatures (101.22±0.15 °F, P<0.05) was recorded in the treatment (T) calves. However, a positive significant correlation of rectal temperature with THI (r=0.434; P<0.01) and respiratory rate (r=0.339; P<0.01) was observed in the experimental calves. The calves in C group had fewer incidences of respiratory illness and problems of diarrhoea when compared to the T calves. Therefore, maintaining fewer calves in semi covered houses with provision of open space was found to be beneficial on health, growth and housing environment of the calves. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
