Abstract

Basic Mycology and Mycotechnology deals with the study of fungi and production of their valuable products like different metabolites, food and pharmaceuticals by using fungal system as machinery in consideration with the principles of fungal biology, bioconversion and environmental technology. The book has been designed to give a basic idea on Mycology & applied biotechnological aspects of fungi. Abstract

Mushrooms have been known as an ideal vegetarian food item that is enriched with essential amino acids, minerals, vitamins, pharmaceutical properties, low in fat, low in carbohydrates and an efficient tool for management of agro wastes. In India, mushrooms have been used as food and medicine by some tribal communities by their traditional knowledge. However, the country like India with its diversity of mushroom (i.e. macro fungi) with huge source of agro waste can open a new door of agro industry in near future. The decreasing trend of arable land and increasing food demand necessitates food production by utilizing agro waste which is not only mitigated the stubble burning problem in agriculture based country like India but it is also provided nutrition enriched health food to combat malnutrition. Mushroom along with other microbial biomass like yeast, algae and single cell protein (SCP) are often referred to as an alternative source of supplemented health food. However, among all these mushroom cultivation is unique economically viable biotechnology for the conversion of lignocellulosic agro waste materials into high quality nutritious food. In recent times, mushroom cultivation is gaining popularity to those growers having no or insufficient land. The identification of edible and poisonous mushrooms in wild condition is difficult as there is no instant methodology for accurate determination of safe and poisonous mushrooms. So, cultivation of edible mushroom with desire strain is important to consume mushroom safely. Processing and preservation are other important aspects of mushroom production as the shelf-life is very short. This book is aimed to reach the mushroom workers particularly student, researcher, common man, big or small growers in North East India. Abstract

Heavy metals bring long-term hazardous consequences and pose a serious threat to all life forms. Being non-biodegradable, they can remain in the food webs for a long period of time. Metal ions are essential for life and indispensable for almost all aspects of metabolism but can be toxic beyond threshold level to all living beings including microbes. Heavy metals are generally present in the environment, but many geogenic and anthropogenic activities has led to excess metal ion accumulation in the environment. To survive in harsh metal contaminated environments, bacteria have certain resistance mechanisms to metabolize and transform heavy metals into less hazardous forms. This also gives rise to different species of heavy metal resistant bacteria. Herein, we have tried to incorporate the different aspects of heavy metal toxicity in bacteria and provide an up-to-date and across-the-board review. The various aspects of heavy metal biology of bacteria encompassed in this review includes the biological notion of heavy metals, toxic effect of heavy metals on bacteria, the factors regulating bacterial heavy metal resistance, the diverse mechanisms governing bacterial heavy metal resistance, bacterial responses to heavy metal stress, and a brief overview of gene regulation under heavy metal stress. Abstract

Fusarium moniliforme is one of the important soil-borne pathogen causing stalk and ear rot diseases in maize. So, aim of our study is to identify the suitable and eco-friendly strategies to sort out the problem arising from rot disease in maize. In our present investigation, we isolated a total of 18 nonpathogenic fungal strains from rhizospheric soil of maize growing field of Uttar Dinajpur district of West Bengal, India. Out of the 18 fungal strains, four strains of Trichoderma asperellum viz. RGH1, RGI1, RGD2 and RD3 were selected for their three dimensional plant growth promoting activities in maize Analysis of our observation on the study revealed that all the T. asperellum strains were showing three dimensional plant growth promoting activities in maize. It may therefore be concluded that T. asperellum may be consider as a promising eco-friendly bio-control, bio fertiliser and biotic plant defence elicitor for sustainable agriculture. 25. In Vitro Antagonistic Study of Maize Root Colonizing Fungal Isolates Against Fusarium moniliforme Causing Ear Rot Disease of Maize.

Abstract

In the present study, different root colonizing fungal isolates were isolated from the rhizospheric soil of maize growing areas of Uttar Dinajpur, West Bengal. All the isolates including test pathogen were identified from Indian Type Culture Collection, New Delhi. Plant growth promoting maize root colonizing fungal isolates-Penicillium pinophilum (ITC NO. 11,201.19), Trichoderma harzianum (ITC NO.11,203.19), Trichoderma asperellum (ITC NO. 11,209.19), Aspergillus niger (ITC NO. 11,204.19) and Penicillum purpurogenum (ITC NO. 11,207.19) exhibited antagonistic activities against F. moniliforme (ITC NO. 11,208.19) in vitro. Two antagonistic isolates of T. harzianum and eleven strains of T. asperellum showed antibiosis mechanism for antagonism against F. moniliforme with the range of Percent Inhibition of Radial Growth from 62.41% to 88.57%. Competitive mode of antagonism against test pathogen by the isolates of P. pinophilum, P. purpurogenum and six isolates of A. niger were found. Percent of inhibition of radial growth ranged from 57.14% to 91.42%. In our finding, antagonistic isolates especially Trichoderma harzianum (ITC NO. 11,203.19), Trichoderma asperellum (ITC NO. 11,209.19) strains either single or in combination with rest maize root colonizing strains could be used as potent growth promoters as well as biocontrol (BCA) agents. Abstract

Rhizoctonia solani is one of the most important soil-borne fungal pathogen causing significant yield losses in many agriculturally important crops globally. In the present investigation, several different vegetable-grains culture media viz., Rice Dextrose Agar (RDA), Maize Dextrose Agar (MDA), Beet Dextrose Agar (BtDA), Nutrient Dextrose Agar (NDA), Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA), Carrot Dextrose Agar (CDA), Maize Potato Dextrose Agar (MPDA), Banana Dextrose Agar (BDA) and Brinjal Dextrose Agar (BrDA) were evaluated to find out the appropriate media for growth and sclerotia formation of R. solani. Out of nine different culture media tested, maximum mycelial growth and sclerotia formation was recorded in MPDA while minimum mycelial growth was recorded in RDA. Abstract

Fusarium causing disease in maize is probably the one of the most serious diseases among the crop plants all over the world. It not only damages the maize plant, reduces its potential yield and its nutritional values but imposes threatening to the human life through the induction of mycotoxin development. F. graminearum and F. moniliforme syn. Fusarium verticillioides are two important maize pathogens that cause substantial damage to its ear, stalk and foliage, causing contamination of grains with mycotoxins. Since conventional methods of controlling the diseases including the chemical methods proved not enough for total control of the disease with creating situation even worse for our surroundings, the application of PGPR and PGPF can play significant role to control the damage caused by Fusarium.
