In Bushehr province of Iran, Avicennia marina trees have grown in Bordekhoon (Mond Protected Area) and Assaluyeh (Marine National Park of Nayband). Contrary to Bordekhoon, Assaluyeh is a petrochemical region with environmental pollution. This study was aimed to studying protein profiles, allergenic bands, ontogeny, structure and elemental composition of tectum of A. marina pollens in Assaluyeh and Bordekhoon. Pollens were collected from two regions and extracted in PBS, and protein profiles of pollens were determined by sulfate–polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). As an experimental model, 20 female 6–8-week-old Balb/C mice were divided into two groups. The mice of first and second groups were sensitized by Bordekhoon and Assaluyeh pollen extracts, respectively, and mice serum samples were used for immunoblotting. Pollen characteristics were studied using light and scanning electron microscopes. SDS-PAGE showed some differences between pollen protein profiles of two regions. Immunoblotting assay detected that pollens have two allergenic bands and the protein band at 100 KD is the common allergenic protein in two regions. Light microscopy revealed that the development of anther wall was basic type and some abnormalities were observed in microspores and pollens of Assaluyeh. Scanning electron microscopy studies showed that the apertures in considerable numbers of Assaluyeh pollens were closed. The comparison of elemental composition of pollen tectum between two regions showed that pollens of Assaluyeh have accumulated Cu on their tectum. Results obtained indicated that environmental pollution can affect protein profile, allergenic bands, structure and elemental composition of tectum of A. marina pollens.

Background Liver transplantation is a critical survival point for patients with end stage liver diseases. It can dramatically increase patients' survival if the donor liver is intact. One aspect of liver health is absence of steatosis. Nonalcoholic Steato Hepatitis (NASH) and Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) are increasing among young adults and patients living with chronic liver diseases. Objectives In this study, we determined the prevalence of NALFD in livers of brain-dead donors in Imam-Khomeini hospital Complex, Tehran, Iran. We assumed that the calculated prevalence would represent NAFLD prevalence in Iranian population in the age range of 20-60 years. Materials and methods All eligible brain dead liver transplant donors were enrolled in the survey from March 21, 2011 to March 21, 2013 in Imam-Khomeini hospital Complex. Eligible participants were donors aged 20 to 60 years without any obvious history of liver disease. Liver needle biopsy was performed at the end of the transplant operation; time zero biopsy. We calculated the prevalence of NAFLD among brain-dead donors. Moreover, the frequency of NASH was calculated based on the NAS (NAFLD Activity Score). Results Among 116 cases, two were diagnosed as probable NASH. There was a significant association between NAFLD and male gender (P = 0.04). Moreover, we found a higher steatosis level in male gender. There was a significant association between NAFLD and BMI (P = 0.05). Those with BMI more than 27 had severe steatosis. Conclusions Our comprehensive literature review showed that our study was the first investigation in Iran and the region, which determined the prevalence of NAFLD based on tissue diagnosis. We believe that the prevalence of NAFLD/NASH in our donors can represent the overall prevalence in this age group in Iran.

The present study evaluated the antimutagenic and anticancer activities of A. marina leaf extract. The antimutagenic activity of ethanol and water extracts of A. marina leaf (concentration 10 mg/plate for 48 h) was evaluated using the Salmonella typhimurium TA100 strain in the Ames test with (+S9) and without ( S9) metabolic activation, and its anticancer effect with concentrations of 200, 400, 450, 500, 600, and 800 µg/ml of ethanol extract for 24, 48, and 72 h on human leukaemic cell line HL-60 was assessed by MTT assay. The ethanol and water extracts of A. marina were revealed to have antimutagenic activity in the Salmonella mutation assay. The number of mutant colonies decreased in the presence of ethanol and water extract with (+S9) and without ( S9) metabolic activation. The ethanol extract showed a higher antimutagenic effect than the water extract, with an inhibition rate of 71% on the mutated bacterium. The MTT cell viability test showed an induction of cytotoxicity in HL-60 cells treated with the extract with IC50 values of 600, 400, and 280 µg/ml after 24, 48, and 72 h, respectively, in a concentration and time-dependent manner. Flow cytometric analysis confirmed the induction of apoptosis in the cells. Collectively, these results suggest that the Avicennia marina leaf extract contains bioactive compounds with antimutagenic and antileukaemic effects.
