1. FakeClaim: A Multiple Platform-driven Dataset for Identification of Fake News on 2023 Israel-Hamas War

Abstract

We contribute the first publicly available dataset of factual claims from different platforms and fake YouTube videos on the 2023 Israel-Hamas war for automatic fake YouTube video classification. The FakeClaim data is collected from 60 fact-checking organizations in 30 languages and enriched with metadata from the fact-checking organizations curated by trained journalists specialized in fact-checking. Further, we classify fake videos within the subset of YouTube videos using textual information and user comments. We used a pre-trained model to classify each video with different feature combinations. Our best-performing fine-tuned language model, Universal Sentence Encoder (USE), achieves a Macro F1 of 87\%, which shows that the trained model can be helpful for debunking fake videos using the comments from the user discussion. Abstract

Evaluation of retrieval systems is mostly limited to laboratory settings and rarely considers changes of performance over time. This article presents an evaluation of retrieval systems for internal Web site search systems between the years 2006 and 2011. A holistic evaluation methodology for real Web sites was developed which includes tests for functionality, search quality, and user interaction. Among other sites, one set of 20 Web site search systems was evaluated three times in different years and no substantial improvement could be shown. It is surprising that the communication between site and user still leads to very poor results in many cases. Overall, the quality of these search systems could be improved, and several areas for improvement are apparent from our evaluation. For a comparison, Google’s site search function was also tested with the same tasks.

8. Professor's and Student's Perspectives on Digital Education during the COVID-19 Pandemic in Germany: Online Teaching, Adaptation of Courses and OER

Abstract

Open educational resources (OER) and digital education (DE) have shown the ability to improve teaching and learning possibilities, particularly in light of unpredictably occurring events. Especially the COVID-19 pandemic revealed that universities were experiencing technological, socio-psychological, and didactic issues. In order to promote, enrich, and improve DE and OER for crises and beyond, this research article addresses specifically the target audiences of students and teachers in Library and Information Science (LIS) programs in Germany. A qualitative approach with interviews and focus groups was applied to identify, analyze and compare students' and professors' attitudes, experiences and problems in remote teaching and learning during a crisis. The results showed that LIS professors from our sample are experienced and innovative regarding the use of DE during a period of crisis. However, diverse obstacles for the use and production of OER for online education become visible. Students' first difficulties with online learning could be resolved and show how quickly they were able to adjust to the new teaching environment. Both LIS professors and students recognize the advantages of employing DE and OER in higher education. They emphasize positive learning experiences based on flexibility when integrating DE and OER in LIS programs.

Abstract

The widespread of offensive content online such as hate speech poses a growing societal problem. AI tools are necessary for supporting the moderation process at online platforms. For the evaluation of these identification tools, continuous experimentation with data sets in different languages are necessary. The HASOC track (Hate Speech and Offensive Content Identification) is dedicated to develop benchmark data for this purpose. This paper presents the HASOC subtrack for English, Hindi, and Marathi. The data set was assembled from Twitter. This subtrack has two sub-tasks. Task A is a binary classification problem (Hate and Not Offensive) offered for all three languages. Task B is a fine-grained classification problem for three classes (HATE) Hate speech, OFFENSIVE and PROFANITY offered for English and Hindi. Overall, 652 runs were submitted by 65 teams. The performance of the best classification algorithms for task A are F1 measures 0.91, 0.78 and 0.83 for Marathi, Hindi and English, respectively. This overview presents the tasks and the data development as well as the detailed results. The systems submitted to the competition applied a variety of technologies. The best performing algorithms were mainly variants of transformer architectures.

Abstract

Sjögrens disease is a complex autoimmune disease with twelve established susceptibility loci. This genome-wide association study (GWAS) identifies ten novel genome-wide significant (GWS) regions in Sjögrens cases of European ancestry: CD247, NAB1, PTTG1-MIR146A, PRDM1-ATG5, TNFAIP3, XKR6, MAPT-CRHR1, RPTOR-CHMP6-BAIAP6, TYK2, SYNGR1. Polygenic risk scores yield predictability (AUROC = 0.71) and relative risk of 12.08. Interrogation of bioinformatics databases refine the associations, define local regulatory networks of GWS SNPs from the 95% credible set, and expand the implicated gene list to >40. Many GWS SNPs are eQTLs for genes within topologically associated domains in immune cells and/or eQTLs in the main target tissue, salivary glands.

Abstract

We describe the fourth edition of the CheckThat! Lab, part of the 2021 Conference and Labs of the Evaluation Forum (CLEF). The lab evaluates technology supporting tasks related to factuality, and covers Arabic, Bulgarian, English, Spanish, and Turkish. Task 1 asks to predict which posts in a Twitter stream are worth fact-checking, focusing on COVID-19 and politics (in all five languages). Task 2 asks to determine whether a claim in a tweet can be verified using a set of previously fact-checked claims (in Arabic and English). Task 3 asks to predict the veracity of a news article and its topical domain (in English). The evaluation is based on mean average precision or precision at rank k for the ranking tasks, and macro-F1 for the classification tasks. This was the most popular CLEF-2021 lab in terms of team registrations: 132 teams. Abstract

The emergence of ultra-fast X-ray free-electron lasers opens the possibility of imaging single molecules in the gas phase at atomic resolution. The main disadvantage of this imaging technique is the unknown orientation of the sample exposed to the X-ray beam, making the three dimensional reconstruction not trivial. Induced orientation of molecules prior to X-ray exposure can be highly beneficial, as it significantly reduces the number of collected diffraction patterns whilst improving the quality of the reconstructed structure. We present here the possibility of protein orientation using a time-dependent external electric field. We used ab initio simulations on Trp-cage protein to provide a qualitative estimation of the field strength required to break protein bonds, with 45 V/nm as a breaking point value. Furthermore, we simulated, in a classical molecular dynamics approach, the orientation of ubiquitin protein by exposing it to different time-dependent electric fields. The protein structure was preserved for all samples at the moment orientation was achieved, which we denote `orientation before destruction'. Moreover, we find that the minimal field strength required to induce orientation within ten ns of electric field exposure, was of the order of 0.5 V/nm. Abstract

Cultural research is dedicated to understanding the processes of knowledge dissemination and the social and technological practices in the book industry. Research on children books in the 19th century can be supported by computer systems. Specifically, the advances in digital image processing seem to offer great opportunities for analyzing and quantifying the visual components in the books. The production technology for illustrations in books in the 19th century was characterized by a shift from wood or copper engraving to lithography. We report classification experiments which intend to classify images based on the production technology. For a classification task that is also difficult for humans, the classification quality reaches only around 70%. 16. Information Behavior During the Covid-19 Crisis in German-Speaking Countries

Abstract

This paper explores the impact of the Covid-19 crisis at the level of individual information behavior, based on an online survey among 308 participants from the German-speaking countries Austria, Germany and Switzerland in April and May 2020. The results show first that the Covid-19 crisis has led to an increased demand for reliable information. This goes alongside a significant increased use of public broadcasting, newspapers and information provided by public organizations. Second, the majority (84%) of the participants reported being satisfied with the information supply during the Covid-19 crisis. Participants who were less satisfied with the information supply used reliable sources significantly less frequently, specifically public television, national newspapers and information provided by public organizations. 40. Didactic Trends in LIS Education and Their Reflection in Curricula Design

Abstract

The information disciplines are rapidly developing and that development brings twofold challenge for library and information science (LIS) education; in terms of delivering the content, and in terms of the content itself. The former means that, as with any other discipline, it needs to implement new technologies and didactic approaches to provide its students with better learning experiences, greater retention of knowledge, and skills for rapidly changing and challenging labour market. The latter means that LIS education needs to train its students to understand how technical and social changes affect diverse information ecologies and successfully work in such environments. To address these ideas this paper aims to investigate how trends in LIS education are identified, implemented and evaluated in the LIS study programmes, both in terms of technology used for teaching, and in terms of teaching methods. The methodology used to address the research questions and objectives consisted of a literature review of the topic, a content analysis of LIS curricula from a sample of eight European universities that offer education in the LIS field, and an interview study with programme directors from the respective universities. The results have shown that there is a strong and positive culture of innovation in the LIS field that derives from the identity of the discipline and its natural inclination towards responding promptly to social and technical changes. Diverse didactic methods are applied in the analysed study programmes with an aim to offer a more flexible, authentic and individually tailored learning experience. There are obstacles in implementing innovations, and they usually arise from a mismatch between efforts to innovate and how university policies and procedure support those efforts. Another significant obstacle is the general learning culture of a country.

Abstract

Objective To investigate pain course over time and to identify baseline and 3-month predictors of unacceptable pain with or without low inflammation in early RA. Methods A cohort of 275 patients with early RA, recruited in 2012–2016, was investigated and followed for 2 years. Pain was assessed using a visual analogue scale (VAS; 0–100 mm). Unacceptable pain was defined as VAS pain >40, and low inflammation as CRP <10 mg/l. Baseline and 3-month predictors of unacceptable pain were evaluated using logistic regression analysis. Results After 2 years, 32% of patients reported unacceptable pain. Among those, 81% had low inflammation. Unacceptable pain, and unacceptable pain with low inflammation, at 1 and 2 years was significantly associated with several factors at 3 months, but not at baseline. Three-month predictors of these pain states at 1 and 2 years were higher scores for pain, patient global assessment, and the health assessment questionnaire, and more extensive joint tenderness compared with the number of swollen joints. No significant associations were found for objective inflammatory measures. Conclusion A substantial proportion of patients had unacceptable pain with low inflammation after 2 years. Three months after diagnosis seems to be a good time-point for assessing the risk of long-term pain. The associations between patient reported outcomes and pain, and the lack of association with objective inflammatory measures, supports the uncoupling between pain and inflammation in RA. Having many tender joints, but more limited synovitis, may be predictive of long-term pain despite low inflammation in early RA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
