Controlling the current-phase relation (CPR) of Josephson elements is essential for tailoring the eigenstates of superconducting qubits, tuning the properties of parametric amplifiers, and designing nonreciprocal superconducting devices. Here, we introduce the hybrid Josephson rhombus, a highly tunable superconducting circuit containing four semiconductor-superconductor hybrid Josephson junctions embedded in a loop. Combining magnetic frustration with gate-voltage-controlled tuning of individual Josephson couplings provides deterministic control of the harmonic content of the rhombus CPR. We show that for balanced Josephson couplings at full frustration, the hybrid rhombus displays a $\pi$-periodic $\cos(2\varphi)$ potential, indicating coherent charge-$4e$ transport. Tuning away from the balanced configuration, we observe a superconducting diode effect with efficiency exceeding 25%. These results showcase the potential of hybrid Josephson rhombi as fundamental building blocks for noise-resilient qubits and quantum devices with custom transport properties., Comment: 10 pages, 7+1 figures

We report measurements of the current-phase relation of two voltage-controlled semiconductor-superconductor hybrid Josephson junctions (JJs) in series. The two hybrid junctions behave similar to a single-mode JJ with effective transparency determined by the ratio of Josephson coupling strengths of the two junctions. Gate-voltage control of Josephson coupling (measured from switching currents) allows tuning of the harmonic content from sinusoidal, for asymmetric tuning, to highly nonsinusoidal, for symmetric tuning. We investigate transport properties of stable gate-defined quantum dots formed in an InSb$_{0.87}$As$_{0.13}$ quantum well. High $\textit{g}$-factor and strong spin-orbit-coupling make InSb$_x$As$_{1-x}$ a promising platform for exploration of topological superconductivity and spin-based devices. We extract a nearly isotropic in-plane effective $\textit{g}$-factor by studying the evolution of Coulomb blockade peaks and differential conductance as a function of the magnitude and direction of magnetic field. The in-plane $\textit{g}$-factors, $|g^*_{[1\bar{1}0]}|$ and $|g^*_{[110]}|$, range from 49 - 58. Interestingly, this $\textit{g}$-factor is higher than that found in quantum dots fabricated from pure InSb quantum wells. We demonstrate tunable spin-orbit-coupling by tracking a spin-orbit-coupling mediated avoided level crossing between the ground state and an excited state in magnetic field. By increasing the electron density, we observed an increase in an avoided crossing separation, $\Delta_{SO}$. The maximum energy separation extracted is $\Delta_{SO}$$\sim$100 $\mu$eV.

We demonstrate a radio-frequency parametric amplifier that exploits the gate-tunable quantum capacitance of an ultra high mobility two dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in a GaAs heterostructure at cryogenic temperatures. The prototype narrowband amplifier exhibits a gain greater than 20 dB up to an input power of - 66 dBm (1 dB compression), and a noise temperature TN of 1.3 K at 370 MHz. In contrast to superconducting amplifiers, the quantum capacitance parametric amplifier (QCPA) is operable at tesla-scale magnetic fields and temperatures ranging from milli kelvin to a few kelvin. These attributes, together with its low power (microwatt) operation when compared to conventional transistor amplifiers, suggest the QCPA may find utility in enabling on-chip integrated readout circuits for semiconductor qubits or in the context of space transceivers and radio astronomy instruments.

We report microwave impedance measurements of a superconductor-semiconductor hybrid nanowire device with three terminals (3T). Our technique makes use of transmission line resonators to acquire the nine complex scattering matrix parameters (S-parameters) of the device on fast timescales and across a spectrum of frequencies spanning 0.3 - 7 GHz. Via comparison with dc-transport measurements, we examine the utility of this technique for probing the local and non-local response of 3T devices where capacitive and inductive contributions can play a role. Such measurements require careful interpretation but may be of use in discerning true Majorana zero modes from trivial states arising from disorder.

InSb$_{1-x}$As$_{x}$ is a promising material system for exploration of topological superconductivity in hybrid superconductor/semiconductor devices due to large effective g-factor and enhanced spin-orbit coupling when compared to binary InSb and InAs. Much remains to be understood concerning the fundamental properties of the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in InSbAs quantum wells. We report on the electrical properties of a series of 30 nm InSb$_{1-x}$As$_{x}$ quantum wells grown 40 nm below the surface with three different arsenic mole fractions, x = 0.05, 0.13 and 0.19. The dependencies of mobility on 2DEG density and arsenic mole fraction are analyzed. For the x = 0.05 sample, the 2DEG displays a peak mobility $\mu$ = 2.4 $\times$ 10$^5$ cm$^2$/Vs at a density of n = 2.5 $\times$ 10$^{11}$ cm$^{-2}$. High mobility, small effective mass, and strong spin-orbit coupling result in beating in the Shubnikov de Hass oscillations at low magnetic field. Fourier analysis of the Shubnikov de Haas oscillations facilitates extraction of the Rashba spin-orbit parameter ${\alpha}$ as a function of 2DEG density and quantum well mole fraction. For x = 0.19 at n = 3.1 $\times$ 10$^{11}$ cm$^{-2}$, ${\alpha}$ $\approx$ 300 meV$\r{A}$, among the highest reported values in III-V materials.

We report simultaneously acquired local and nonlocal transport spectroscopy in a phase-biased planar Josephson junction based on an epitaxial InAs/Al hybrid two-dimensional heterostructure. Quantum point contacts at the junction ends allow measurement of the 2 x 2 matrix of local and nonlocal tunneling conductances as a function of magnetic field along the junction, phase difference across the junction, and carrier density. A closing and reopening of a gap was observed in both the local and nonlocal tunneling spectra as a function of magnetic field. For particular tunings of junction density, gap reopenings were accompanied by zero-bias conductance peaks (ZBCPs) in local conductances. End-to-end correlation of gap reopening was strong, while correlation of local ZBCPs was weak. A simple, disorder-free model of the device shows comparable conductance matrix behavior associated with a topological phase transition. Phase dependence helps distinguish possible origins of the ZBCPs.

We present a gate-voltage tunable transmon qubit (gatemon) based on planar InAs nanowires that are selectively grown on a high resistivity silicon substrate using III-V buffer layers. We show that low loss superconducting resonators with an internal quality of $2\times 10^5$ can readily be realized using these substrates after the removal of buffer layers. We demonstrate coherent control and readout of a gatemon device with a relaxation time, $T_{1}\approx 700\,\mathrm{ns}$, and dephasing times, $T_2^{\ast}\approx 20\,\mathrm{ns}$ and $T_{\mathrm{2,echo}} \approx 1.3\,\mathrm{\mu s}$. Further, we infer a high junction transparency of $0.4 - 0.9$ from an analysis of the qubit anharmonicity.

Two-dimensional electron gasses (2DEG) in InAs quantum wells proximitized by aluminum are promising platforms for topological qubits based on Majorana zero modes. However, there are still substantial uncertainties associated with the nature of the electronic states at the interfaces of these systems. It is challenging to probe the properties of these hybridized states as they are buried under a relatively thick aluminum layer. In this work, we have investigated a range of InAs/In$ _{1-\text{x}} $Ga$ _\text{x} $As heterostructures with Al overlayers using high precision time-domain THz spectroscopy. Despite the thick metallic overlayer, we observe a prominent cyclotron resonance in the magnetic field that can be associated with the response of the interfacial states. Measurements of the THz range complex Faraday rotation allow the extraction of the sign and magnitude of the effective mass, the density of charge carriers, and scattering times of the 2DEG despite the close proximity of the aluminum layer. A growing body of work suggests that planar Josephson junctions fabricated using superconducting hybrid materials provide a highly controllable route toward one-dimensional topological superconductivity. Among the experimental controls are in-plane magnetic field, phase difference across the junction, and carrier density set by electrostatic gate voltages. Here, we investigate planar Josephson junctions with an improved design based on an epitaxial InAs/Al heterostructure, embedded in a superconducting loop, probed with integrated quantum point contacts (QPCs) at both ends of the junction. For particular ranges of in-plane field and gate voltages, a closing and reopening of the superconducting gap is observed, along with a zero-bias conductance peak (ZBCP) that appears upon reopening of the gap. Consistency with a simple theoretical model supports the interpretation of a topological phase transition. While gap closings and reopenings generally occurred together at the two ends of the junction, the height, shape, and even presence of ZBCPs typically differed between the ends, presumably due to disorder and variation of couplings to local probes.

The spin-orbit interaction and spin-relaxation mechanisms of a shallow InAs quantum well heterostructure are investigated by magnetoconductance measurements as a function of an applied top-gate voltage. The data were fit using the Iordanskii--Lyanda-Geller--Pikus model and two distinct transport regimes were identified which correspond to the first and second sub-bands of the quantum well. The spin-orbit interaction splitting energy is extracted from the fits to the data, which also displays two distinct regimes. The different sub-band regimes exhibit different spin-scattering mechanisms, the identification of which, is of relevance for device platforms of reduced dimensionality which utilise the spin-orbit interaction., Comment: clearance and rights issues

Anomalous nematic states, recently discovered in ultraclean two-dimensional electron gas, emerge from quantum Hall stripe phases upon further cooling. These states are hallmarked by a local minimum (maximum) in the hard (easy) longitudinal resistance and by an incipient plateau in the Hall resistance in nearly half-filled Landau levels. Here, we demonstrate that a modest in-plane magnetic field, applied either along $\left < 110 \right >$ or $\left < 1\bar10 \right >$ crystal axis of GaAs, destroys anomalous nematic states and restores quantum Hall stripe phases aligned along their native $\left < 110 \right >$ direction. These findings confirm that anomalous nematic states are distinct from other ground states and will assist future theories to identify their origin., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Long-distance two-qubit coupling, mediated by a superconducting resonator, is a leading paradigm for performing entangling operations in a quantum computer based on spins in semiconducting materials. Here, we demonstrate a novel, controllable spin-photon coupling based on a longitudinal interaction between a spin qubit and a resonator. We show that coupling a singlet-triplet qubit to a high-impedance superconducting resonator can produce the desired longitudinal coupling when the qubit is driven near the resonator's frequency. We measure the energy splitting of the qubit as a function of the drive amplitude and frequency of a microwave signal applied near the resonator antinode, revealing pronounced effects close to the resonator frequency due to longitudinal coupling. By tuning the amplitude of the drive, we reach a regime with longitudinal coupling exceeding $1$ MHz. This demonstrates a new mechanism for qubit-resonator coupling, and represents a stepping stone towards producing high-fidelity two-qubit gates mediated by a superconducting resonator.

We combine electron beam lithography and masked anodization of epitaxial aluminium to define tunnel junctions via selective oxidation, alleviating the need for wet-etch processing or direct deposition of dielectric materials. Applying this technique to define Josephson junctions in proximity induced superconducting Al-InAs heterostructures, we observe multiple Andreev reflections in transport experiments, indicative of a high quality junction. We further compare the mobility and density of Hall-bars defined via wet etching and anodization. We present a superconductor-semiconductor material system that is both scalable and monolithically integrated on a silicon substrate. It uses selective area growth of Al-InAs hybrid structures on a planar III-V buffer layer, grown directly on a high resistivity silicon substrate. We characterized the electrical properties of this material system at millikelvin temperatures and observed a high average field-effect mobility of $\mu \approx 3200\,\mathrm{cm^2/Vs}$ for the InAs channel, and a hard induced superconducting gap. Josephson junctions exhibited a high interface transmission, $\mathcal{T} \approx 0.75 $, gate voltage tunable switching current with a product of critical current and normal state resistance, $I_{\mathrm{C}}R_{\mathrm{N}} \approx 83\,\mathrm{\mu V}$, and signatures of multiple Andreev reflections. These results pave the way for scalable and high coherent gate voltage tunable transmon devices and other superconductor-semiconductor hybrids fabricated directly on silicon.

We report magneto-transport measurements of quasi-1-dimensional (1D) Al-InAs nanowires produced via etching of a hybrid superconductor-semiconductor two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG). Tunnel spectroscopy measurements above the superconducting gap provide a means of identifying the 1D sub-bands associated with the confined 1D region. Fitting the data to a model that includes the different components of the spin-orbit interaction (SOI) reveals their strength, of interest for evaluating the suitability of superconductor-semiconductor 2DEG for realizing Majorana qubits., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, SI

We study multielectron bubble phases in the $N=2$ and $N=3$ Landau levels in a high mobility GaAs/AlGaAs sample. We found that the longitudinal magnetoresistance versus temperature curves in the multielectron bubble region exhibit sharp peaks, irrespective of the Landau level index. We associate these peaks with an enhanced scattering caused by thermally fluctuating domains of a bubble phase and a uniform uncorrelated electron liquid at the onset of the bubble phases. Within the $N=3$ Landau level, onset temperatures of three-electron and two-electron bubbles exhibit linear trends with respect to the filling factor; the onset temperatures of three-electron bubbles are systematically higher than those of two-electron bubbles. Furthermore, onset temperatures of the two-electron bubble phases across $N=2$ and $N=3$ Landau levels are similar, but exhibit an offset. This offset and the dominant nature of the three-electron bubbles in the $N=3$ Landau level reveals the role of the short-range part of the electron-electron interaction in the formation of the bubbles.

The Andreev spectrum of a quantum dot embedded in a hybrid semiconductor-superconductor interferometer can be modulated by electrostatic gating, magnetic flux through the interferometer, and Zeeman splitting from in-plane magnetic field. We demonstrate parity transitions in the embedded quantum dot system, and show that the Zeeman-driven transition is accompanied by a 0-{\pi} transition in the superconducting phase across the dot. We further demonstrate that flux through the interferometer modulates both dot parity and 0-{\pi} transitions.

We report on transport signatures of hidden quantum Hall stripe (hQHS) phases in high ($N > 2$) half-filled Landau levels of Al$_{x}$Ga$_{1-x}$As/Al$_{0.24}$Ga$_{0.76}$As quantum wells with varying Al mole fraction $x < 10^{-3}$. Residing between the conventional stripe phases (lower $N$) and the isotropic liquid phases (higher $N$), where resistivity decreases as $1/N$, these hQHS phases exhibit isotropic and $N$-independent resistivity. Using the experimental phase diagram we establish that the stripe phases are more robust than theoretically predicted, calling for improved theoretical treatment. We also show that, unlike conventional stripe phases, the hQHS phases do not occur in ultrahigh mobility GaAs quantum wells, but are likely to be found in other systems., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Using the tip of a scanning probe microscope as a local electrostatic gate gives access to real space information on electrostatics as well as charge transport at the nanoscale, provided that the tip-induced electrostatic potential is well known. Here, we focus on the accurate characterization of the tip potential, in a regime where the tip locally depletes a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) hosted in a semiconductor heterostructure. Scanning the tip in the vicinity of a quantum point contact defined in the 2DEG, we observe Fabry-P\'erot interference fringes at low temperature in maps of the device conductance. We exploit the evolution of these fringes with the tip voltage to measure the change in depletion radius by electron interferometry. We find that a semi-classical finite-element self-consistent model taking into account the conical shape of the tip reaches a faithful correspondence with the experimental data.

We study energy gaps of the $\nu=7/2$ and $\nu=5/2$ fractional quantum Hall states in a series of two-dimensional electron gases containing alloy disorder. We found that gaps at these two filling factors have the same suppression rate with alloy disorder. The dimensionless intrinsic gaps in our alloy samples obtained from the model proposed by Morf and d'Ambrumenil are consistent with numerical results, but are larger than those obtained from experiments on pristine samples published in the literature. The disorder broadening parameter has large uncertainties. However, a modified analysis relying on shared intrinsic gaps yields consistent results for both the $\nu=5/2$ and $7/2$ fractional quantum Hall states and establishes a linear relationship between the disorder broadening parameter and alloy concentration. Furthermore, we find that we can separate contributions to the disorder broadening of the long-range and short-range scattering.

Hybrid superconductor-semiconductor nanowires are predicted to undergo a field-induced phase transition from a trivial to a topological superconductor, marked by the closure and re-opening of the excitation gap, followed by the emergence of Majorana bound states at the nanowire ends. Many local density-of-states measurements have reported signatures of the topological phase, however this interpretation has been challenged by alternative explanations. Here, by measuring nonlocal conductance, we identify the closure of the excitation gap in the bulk of the semiconductor before the emergence of zero-bias peaks. This observation is inconsistent with scenarios where zero-bias peaks occur due to end-states with a trivially gapped bulk, which have been extensively considered in the theoretical and experimental literature. We observe that after the gap closes, nonlocal signals fluctuate strongly and persist irrespective of the presence of local-conductance zero-bias peaks. Thus, our observations are also incompatible with a simple picture of clean topological superconductivity. This work presents a new experimental approach for probing the spatial extent of states in Majorana wires, and reveals the presence of a regime with a continuum of spatially extended states and uncorrelated zero-bias peaks.

We have observed photoinduced negative optical conductivity, or gain, in the terahertz frequency range in a GaAs multiple-quantum-well structure in a strong perpendicular magnetic field at low temperatures. The gain is narrow-band: it appears as a sharp peak (linewidth $<$0.45 meV) whose frequency shifts with applied magnetic field. The gain has a circular-polarization selection rule: a strong line is observed for hole-cyclotron-resonance-active polarization. Furthermore, the gain appears only when the exciton $1s$ state is populated, which rules out intraexcitonic transitions to be its origin. Based on these observations, we propose a possible process in which the stimulated emission of a terahertz photon occurs while two free excitons scatter into one biexciton in an energy and angular-momentum conserving manner., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We study hydrodynamic and ballistic transport regimes through nonlocal resistance measurements and high-resolution kinetic simulations in a mesoscopic structure on a high-mobility two-dimensional electron system in a GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure. We evince the existence of collective transport phenomena in both regimes and demonstrate that negative nonlocal resistances and current vortices are not exclusive to only the hydrodynamic regime. The combined experiments and simulations highlight the importance of device design, measurement schemes and one-to-one modeling of experimental devices to demarcate various transport regimes., Comment: 3 figures and supplemental material

It is well established that the ground states of a two-dimensional electron gas with half-filled high ($N \ge 2$) Landau levels are compressible charge-ordered states, known as quantum Hall stripe (QHS) phases. The generic features of QHSs are a maximum (minimum) in a longitudinal resistance $R_{xx}$ ($R_{yy}$) and a non-quantized Hall resistance $R_H$. Here, we report on emergent minima (maxima) in $R_{xx}$ ($R_{yy}$) and plateau-like features in $R_H$ in half-filled $N \ge 3$ Landau levels. Remarkably, these unexpected features develop at temperatures considerably lower than the onset temperature of QHSs, suggesting a new ground state., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

We analyze the evidence of Majorana zero modes in nanowires that came from tunneling spectroscopy and other experiments, and scout the path to topologically protected states that are of interest for quantum computing. We illustrate the importance of the superconductor-semiconductor interface quality and sketch out where further progress in materials science of these interfaces can take us. Finally, we discuss the prospects of observing more exotic non-Abelian anyons based on the same materials platform, and how to make connections to high energy physics., Comment: Invited perspective for Nature Physics

We investigate superconducting quantum interference devices consisting of two highly transmissive Josephson junctions coupled by a superconducting loop, all defined in an epitaxial InAs/Al heterostructure. A novel device design allows for independent measurements of the Andreev bound state spectrum within the normal region of a junction and the resulting current-phase relation. We show that knowledge of the Andreev bound state spectrum alone is enough to derive the independently measured phase dependent supercurrent. On the other hand, the opposite relation does not generally hold true as details of the energy spectrum are averaged out in a critical current measurement. Finally, quantitative understanding of field dependent spectrum and supercurrent require taking into account the second junction in the loop and the kinetic inductance of the epitaxial Al film.

A scaled-up quantum computer will require a highly efficient control interface that autonomously manipulates and reads out large numbers of qubits, which for solid-state implementations are usually held at millikelvin (mK) temperatures. Advanced CMOS technology, tightly integrated with the quantum system, would be ideal for implementing such a control interface but is generally discounted on the basis of its power dissipation that leads to heating of the fragile qubits. Here, we demonstrate an ultra low power, CMOS-based quantum control platform that takes digital commands as input and generates many parallel qubit control signals. Realized using 100,000 transistors operating near 100 mK, our platform alleviates the need for separate control lines to every qubit by exploiting the low leakage of transistors at cryogenic temperatures to store charge on floating gate structures that are used to tune-up quantum devices. This charge can then be rapidly shuffled between on-chip capacitors to generate the fast voltage pulses required for dynamic qubit control. We benchmark this architecture on a quantum dot test device, showing that the control of thousands of gate electrodes is feasible within the cooling power of commercially available dilution refrigerators.

Defining quantum dots in semiconductor based heterostructures is an essential step in initializing solid-state qubits. With growing device complexity and increasing number of functional devices required for measurements, a manual approach to finding suitable gate voltages to confine electrons electrostatically is impractical. Here, we implement a two-stage device characterization and dot-tuning process which first determines whether devices are functional and then attempts to tune the functional devices to the single or double quantum dot regime. We show that automating well established manual tuning procedures and replacing the experimenter's decisions by supervised machine learning is sufficient to tune double quantum dots in multiple devices without pre-measured input or manual intervention. The quality of measurement results and charge states are assessed by four binary classifiers trained with experimental data, reflecting real device behaviour. We compare and optimize eight models and different data preprocessing techniques for each of the classifiers to achieve reliable autonomous tuning, an essential step towards scalable quantum systems in quantum dot based qubit architectures.

Candidate systems for topologically-protected qubits include two-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs) based on heterostructures exhibiting a strong spin-orbit interaction (SOI) and superconductivity via the proximity effect. For InAs- or InSb-based materials, the need to form shallow quantum wells to create a hard-gapped $p$-wave superconducting state often subjects them to fabrication-induced damage, limiting their mobility. Here we examine scattering mechanisms in processed InAs 2DEG quantum wells and demonstrate a means of increasing their mobility via repairing the semiconductor-dielectric interface. Passivation of charged impurity states with an argon-hydrogen plasma results in a significant increase in the measured mobility and reduction in its variance relative to untreated samples, up to 45300 cm$^2$/(V s) in a 10 nm deep quantum well.

We make use of a custom-designed cryo-CMOS multiplexer (MUX) to enable multiple quantum devices to be characterized in a single cool-down of a dilution refrigerator. Combined with a packaging approach that integrates cryo-CMOS chips and a hot-swappable, parallel device test platform, we describe how this setup takes a standard wiring configuration as input and expands the capability for batch-characterization of quantum devices at milli-Kelvin temperatures and high magnetic fields. The architecture of the cryo-CMOS multiplexer is discussed and performance benchmarked using few-electron quantum dots and Hall mobility-mapping measurements.

Stripe-like and bubble-like patterns spontaneously form in numerous physical, chemical, and biological systems when competing long-range and short-range interactions banish uniformity. Stripe-like and the related nematic morphology are also under intense scrutiny in various strongly correlated electron systems. In contrast, the electronic bubble morphology is rare. Some of the most intriguing electron bubbles develop in the two-dimensional electron gas subjected to a perpendicular magnetic field. However, in contrast to bubbles forming in classical systems such as the Turing activator-inhibitor reaction or Langmuir films, bubbles in electron gases owe their existence to elementary quantum mechanics: they are stabilized as wavefunctions of individual electrons overlap. Here we report a rich pattern of multi-electron bubble phases in a high Landau level and we conclude that this richness is due to the nodal structure of the orbital component of the electronic wavefunction.

We report on microwave-induced resistance oscillations (MIROs) in a tunable-density 30-nm-wide GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well. We find that the MIRO amplitude increases dramatically with carrier density. Our analysis shows that the anticipated increase in the effective microwave power and quantum lifetime with density is not sufficient to explain the observed growth of the amplitude. We further observe that the fundamental oscillation extrema move towards cyclotron resonance with increasing density, which also contradicts theoretical predictions. Low-temperature illumination of a two-dimensional electron gas in GaAs quantum wells is known to greatly improve the quality of high-field magnetotransport. The improvement is known to occur even when the carrier density and mobility remain unchanged, but what exactly causes it remains unclear. Here, we investigate the effect of illumination on microwave photoresistance in low magnetic fields. We find that the amplitude of microwave-induced resistance oscillations grows dramatically after illumination. Dingle analysis reveals that this growth reflects a substantial increase in the single-particle (quantum) lifetime, which likely originates from the light-induced redistribution of charge enhancing the screening capability of the doping layers.

We report on transport signatures of eight distinct bubble phases in the $N=3$ Landau level of a Al$_{x}$Ga$_{1-x}$As/Al$_{0.24}$Ga$_{0.76}$As quantum well with $x = 0.0015$. These phases occur near partial filling factors $\nu^\star \approx 0.2\,(0.8)$ and $\nu^\star \approx 0.3\,(0.7)$ and have $M = 2$ and $M = 3$ electrons (holes) per bubble, respectively. We speculate that a small amount of alloy disorder in our sample helps to distinguish these broken symmetry states in low-temperature transport measurements., Comment: 4 pages

The technique of dispersive gate sensing (DGS) uses a single electrode to readout a qubit by detecting the change in quantum capacitance due to single electron tunnelling. Here, we extend DGS from the detection of discrete tunnel events to the open regime, where many electrons are transported via partially- or fully-transmitting quantum modes. Comparing DGS with conventional transport shows that the technique can resolve the Van Hove singularities of a one-dimensional ballistic system, and also probe aspects of the potential landscape that are not easily accessed with dc transport. Beyond readout, these results suggest that gate-sensing can also be of use in tuning-up qubits or probing the charge configuration of open quantum devices in the regime where electrons are delocalized.

Majorana zero modes are leading candidates for topological quantum computation due to non-local qubit encoding and non-abelian exchange statistics. Spatially separated Majorana modes are expected to allow phase-coherent single-electron transport through a topological superconducting island via a mechanism referred to as teleportation. Here we experimentally investigate such a system by patterning an elongated epitaxial InAs-Al island embedded in an Aharonov-Bohm interferometer. With increasing parallel magnetic field, a discrete sub-gap state in the island is lowered to zero energy yielding persistent 1e-periodic Coulomb blockade conductance peaks (e is the elementary charge). In this condition, conductance through the interferometer is observed to oscillate in a perpendicular magnetic field with a flux period of h/e (h is Planck's constant), indicating coherent transport of single electrons through the islands, a signature of electron teleportation via Majorana modes, could also be observed, suggesting additional non-Majorana mechanisms for 1e transport through these moderately short wires.

High mobility, strong spin-orbit coupling, and large Land\'e g-factor make the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in InAs quantum wells grown on nearly-lattice-matched GaSb substrates an attractive platform for mesoscopic quantum transport experiments. Successful operation of mesoscopic devices relies on three key properties: electrical isolation from the substrate; ability to fully deplete the 2DEG and control residual sidewall conduction with lithographic gates; and high mobility to ensure ballistic transport over mesoscopic length scales. Simultaneous demonstration of these properties has remained elusive for InAs 2DEGs on GaSb substrates. Here we report on heterostructure design, molecular beam epitaxy growth, and device fabrication that result in high carrier mobility and full 2DEG depletion with minimal residual edge conduction. In spite of its ubiquity in strongly correlated systems, the competition of paired and nematic ground states remains poorly understood. Recently such a competition was reported in the two-dimensional electron gas at filling factor $\nu=5/2$. At this filling factor a pressure-induced quantum phase transition was observed from the paired fractional quantum Hall state to the quantum Hall nematic. Here we show that the pressure induced paired-to-nematic transition also develops at $\nu=7/2$, demonstrating therefore this transition in both spin branches of the second orbital Landau level. However, we find that pressure is not the only parameter controlling this transition. Indeed, ground states consistent with those observed under pressure also develop in a sample measured at ambient pressure, but in which the electron-electron interaction was tuned close to its value at the quantum critical point. Our experiments suggest that electron-electron interactions play a critical role in driving the paired-to-nematic transition.

We present measurements of one-dimensional superconductor-semiconductor Coulomb islands, fabricated by gate confinement of a two-dimensional InAs heterostructure with an epitaxial Al layer. When tuned via electrostatic side gates to regimes without sub-gap states, Coulomb blockade reveals Cooper-pair mediated transport. When sub-gap states are present, Coulomb peak positions and heights oscillate in a correlated way with magnetic field and gate voltage, as predicted theoretically, with (anti) crossings in (parallel) transverse magnetic field indicating Rashba-type spin-orbit coupling. Overall results are consistent with a picture of overlapping Majorana zero modes in finite wires.

Liquid crystalline phases of matter permeate nature and technology, with examples ranging from cell membranes to liquid-crystal displays. Remarkably, electronic liquid crystal phases can exist in two-dimensional electron systems (2DES) at half Landau level filling in the quantum Hall regime. Theory has predicted the existence of a liquid crystal smectic phase that breaks both rotational and translational symmetries. However, previous experiments in 2DES are most consistent with an anisotropic nematic phase breaking only rotational symmetry. Here we report three transport phenomena at half-filling in ultra-low disorder 2DES: a non-monotonic temperature dependence of the sample resistance, dramatic onset of large time-dependent resistance fluctuations, and a sharp feature in the differential resistance suggestive of depinning. These data suggest that a sequence of symmetry-breaking phase transitions occurs as temperature is lowered: first a transition from an isotropic liquid to a nematic phase and finally to a liquid crystal smectic phase.

Electrostatic confinement in semiconductors provides a flexible platform for the emulation of interacting electrons in a two-dimensional lattice, including in the presence of gauge fields. This combination offers the potential to realize a wide host of quantum phases. Here we present a measurement and fabrication scheme that builds on capacitance spectroscopy and allows for the independent control of density and periodic potential strength imposed on a two-dimensional electron gas. We characterize disorder levels and (in)homogeneity and develop and optimize different gating strategies at length scales where interactions are expected to be strong. A continuation of these ideas might see to fruition the emulation of interaction-driven Mott transitions or Hofstadter butterfly physics.

We present measurements of low frequency charge noise and conductance drift in modulation doped GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures grown by molecular beam epitaxy in which the silicon doping density has been varied from $2.4\times 10^{18} cm^{-3}$ (critically doped) to $6.0\times 10^{18} cm^{-3}$ (overdoped). Quantum point contacts were used to detect charge fluctuations. A clear reduction of both short time scale telegraphic noise and long time scale conductance drift with decreased doping density was observed. We performed effective mass measurements employing microwave-induced resistance oscillation in a tunable-density GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well. Our main result is a clear observation of an effective mass increase with decreasing density, in general agreement with earlier studies which investigated the density dependence of the effective mass employing Shubnikov- de Haas oscillations. This finding provides further evidence that microwave-induced resistance oscillations are sensitive to electron-electron interactions and offer a convenient and accurate way to obtain the effective mass., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We demonstrate a scalable device architecture that facilitates indirect exchange between singlet-triplet spin qubits, mediated by an intermediate quantum state. The device comprises five quantum dots, which can be independently loaded and unloaded via tunneling to adjacent reservoirs, avoiding charge latch-up common in linear dot arrays. In a step towards realizing two-qubit entanglement based on indirect exchange, the architecture permits precise control over tunnel rates between the singlet-triplet qubits and the intermediate state. We show that by separating qubits by 1 um, the residual capacitive coupling between them is reduced to 7 ueV.

Under hydrostatic pressure, the ground state of a two-dimensional electron gas at $\nu=5/2$ changes from a fractional quantum Hall state to the stripe phase. By measuring the energy gap of the fractional quantum Hall state and of the onset temperature of the stripe phase we mapped out a phase diagram of these competing phases in the pressure-temperature plane. Our data highlight the dichotomy of two descriptions of the half-filled Landau level near the quantum critical point: one based on electrons and another on composite fermions.

InAs-based two-dimensional electron systems grown on lattice mismatched InP substrates offer a robust platform for the pursuit of topologically protected quantum computing. We investigated strained composite quantum wells of In$_{0.75}$Ga$_{0.25}$As/InAs/In$_{0.75}$Ga$_{0.25}$As with In$_{0.75}$Al$_{0.25}$As barriers. By optimizing the widths of the In$_{0.75}$Ga$_{0.25}$As layers, the In$_{0.75}$Al$_{0.25}$As barrier, and the InAs quantum well we demonstrate mobility in excess of $1 \times 10^{6}\,$cm$^{2}/$Vs. Mobility vs. density data indicates that scattering is dominated by a residual three dimensional distribution of charged impurities. We extract the Rashba parameter and spin-orbit length as important material parameters for investigations involving Majorana zero modes.

We report the use of dispersive gate sensing (DGS) as a means of probing the charge environment of heterostructure-based qubit devices. The DGS technique, which detects small shifts in the quantum capacitance associated with single-electron tunnel events, is shown to be sensitive to pockets of charge in the potential-landscape likely under, and surrounding, the surface gates that define qubits and their readout sensors. Configuring a quantum point contact (QPC) as a localized emitter, we show how these charge pockets are activated by the relaxation of electrons tunneling through a barrier. The presence of charge pockets creates uncontrolled offsets in gate-bias and their thermal activation by on-chip tunnel currents suggests further sources of charge-noise that lead to decoherence in semiconductor qubits.
