Abstract

Aconitum napellus L. is a popular medicinal plant extensively used in homeopathy. This article provides detailed morphology and microscopy, including the anatomical and histochemical features of the herb, to aid authentication and quality control. In cross‐section, the root in secondary growth shows the phloem surrounded by pericyclic fibers and a well‐developed xylem. The stem is irregular in outline, displaying unicellular trichomes and many free collateral vascular bundles encircling the pith. The leaf is dorsiventral, hypostomatic with anomocytic and anisocytic stomata, and shows non‐glandular trichomes. The floral parts are characterized by uniseriate epidermises, homogeneous mesophyll, anomocytic stomata on the abaxial surface, trichomes, and oval pollen grains. The tissue fragments in powdered herbs show these characteristics and have numerous starch grains with thimble‐shaped, linear or star‐shaped hilum. The detailed macroscopic and microscopic analysis provided in this study can help in the authentication and quality control of A. napellus raw materials. Abstract

Viscum album L. (Santalaceae) is an important medicinal plant traditionally used to treat several diseases, including cancer therapy. This paper provides detailed morpho-anatomical characteristics of the leaves, stems and berries of Viscum album subsp. album growing as hemi-parasite on the branches of Malus domestica (Suckow) Borkh. (Rosaceae) to aid species identification and botanical characterization. Additionally, for the first time, microchemical analyses of all tissues and Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy analyses of the calcium oxalate crystals are provided for the first time. The plant features leathery presents green leaves with parallel veins, small yellow unisexual flowers in 3-flowered cymes, and the dioecious inflorescences usually consist of three flowers, with female flowers generating white fleshy berries, in which a seed is embedded in the mucilaginous mesocarp, normally containing two embryos. Anatomically, the analyzed leaves were isobilateral and amphistomatic, and showed straight anticlinal epidermal cell walls, thick cuticles with epicuticular wax crystalloids, and paracytic stomata. The midrib is flat on both sides and has a single vascular bundle, whereas the strongly shortened petiole is concave-convex in shape and contains five bundles. The stems show a primary structure with a ring of nine vascular bundles enclosing the pith. Calcium oxalate druses and cubic and quadrangular prisms were observed in different plant parts. The results of this study provide new microscopy information that can help in the authentication of mistletoe raw materials.

Abstract

Aim of study: The aim of this study was to verify the differences in VIS/NIR spectra and leaf color parameters of leaves of Eucalyptus badjensis, E. benthamii, E. dunnii, E. grandis, E. globulus and E. saligna, at four ages, and their influence on species discrimination. Area of study: São Mateus do Sul, Paraná, Brazil. Material and methods: Seedlings of the six species, with four replicates for each, were acclimatized in the same environment, in October 2015, in an entirely randomized design. Leaf samples were collected from plants that were 6, 8, 10 and 12 months old. Three leaves from each of four plants at each age were analyzed. Five parameters were recorded referring to the adaxial surface of each leaf, with a total of 15 records from repetitions and 60 per species at each age. The evaluation was performed in the spectral ranges from 360-740 nm (VIS) and 1000-2500 nm (NIR). Principal component analysis and linear discriminant analysis were performed. Main results: The influence of age differed within each species. In color data, the parameter with most variation among all samples was chromatic coordinate b*. In reflectance spectra (VIS), age of 12 months provided the best discrimination of species. Second derivative NIR spectra produced the best results of external prediction of Linear Discriminant Analysis models based on leaves of 12-month-old trees. Research highlights: Observation of color parameters and VIS/NIR spectroscopy have potential utility for discrimination of Eucalyptus species based on their green leaves.

Abstract

This paper provides detailed morpho‐anatomical and histochemical characteristics of the leaves, peduncles, stems, and roots of Eryngium yuccifolium Michx. (Apiaceae) by bright‐field light and scanning electron microscopy. Noteworthy morpho‐anatomical features include the monocot‐like leaves with parallel venation and distant marginal bristles, amphistomatic leaves with paracytic or anisocytic stomata and heterogenous isobilateral mesophyll, the presence of epicuticular wax crystalloids on both leaf surfaces, calcium oxalate druses and secretory canals in all the studied plant parts, presence of hypodermis, stem and peduncle with longitudinal ribs containing collenchyma, presence of aerenchyma in the peduncle and root, and absence of sclerenchyma in all the plant parts analyzed. Abstract

This study focuses on six Eucalyptusspecies, namely E. badjensis, E. benthamii, E. dunnii, E. grandis, E. globulus, and E. salignaaiming at a sustainable use of their green biomass. These species were grown at the same location and stage of development. Leaf essential oils were extracted by hydrodistillation using a Clevenger apparatus during the four seasons. Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) and high-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC) techniques were used to analyze the chemical composition. E. badjensisconsistently exhibited a dominant composition, with 1,8-cineole being the predominant component. Notably, the proportion of 1,8-cineole in E. badjensiswas 77.35% in spring (SP), 69.46% in summer (SU), 95.30% in autumn (AU), and 89.30% in winter (WI). E. globulusalso exhibited 1,8-cineole as its primary constituent, with proportions fluctuating slightly across seasons at 84.87%, 79.94%, 81%, and 85.88%, respectively. The proportions and constituents of various species differed significantly. HPTLC was successfully used as a swift technique to monitor the chemical composition of essential oils (EOs) in various Eucalyptusspecies during the seasonality. GC–MS and HPTLC analysis showed that different Eucalyptusspecies displayed unique chemical compositions, while both the chemical profile and productivity of all analyzed EOs were affected by seasonality. This finding was demonstrated in the principal components cluster. The analysis of six species has revealed that the EO of E. benthamiiis the most potent in thwarting the infestation of Cimex lectularius. Additionally, all six EOs demonstrated antioxidant activity in the ABTS model. EOs of E. benthamii, E. dunnii, and E. grandisshowed significant anti-inflammatory activities in experimental models.
