ANCIENT cities & towns , *MOSQUES , *PRINCES - Abstract
Manisa, one of the ancient cities of Western Anatolia, after hosting many civilisations throughout history, came under Turkish rule at the beginning of the XIVth century and soon gained the identity of a Turkish-Islamic city. The city, which was the capital of the Saruhanogullari Principality, was one of the most important sanjak centres where princes were sent during the Ottoman period. In Manisa, which witnessed intensive construction activities in these centuries, many architectural works were built by both members of the dynasty and state officials. Among these buildings, the Lala Pasha Mosque is one of the examples of a single-domed mosque, but it also has some remarkable architectural features. The mosque has survived to the present day with various interventions over the centuries. The existing traces provide important data regarding the construction phases of the building. The study of Ottoman lakes and wetlands from the perspective of management and conservation is an emerging field. Scholars have explored Ottoman strategies for managing agricultural and extractive landscapes, yet detailed investigation of socio-political responses to dynamic wetlands, particularly during periods of drastic climate shifts, requires deeper investigation. Our research on wetlands and lakes moves from the purview of waqfs (pious foundations) to the emergence of the Ottoman Public Debt Administration (OPDA). By examining the shifting perspectives of institutional authority and community responses to it from the early modern period to the nineteenth century, we discuss the complexities of wetland management in the Marmara Lake Basin within the sancak of Saruhan (contemporary Manisa) in western Anatolia. We argue that intimate knowledge of this specific ecosystem played a critical role in mitigating attempts at reclamation and land grabbing and ultimately in developing legal structures of and policies for Ottoman conservation strategies. We situate our discussion within the paradigm of environing made possible by detailed longue-durée archival narratives; these micro-histories afford a dynamic perspective into non-linear responses to ecological and political changes and provide a local lens into the scalar impacts of human agency. Changes in the mode of production due to globalization, neo-liberal policies, and technological developments have created major economic-political transformations in societies. Within this framework, when social problems in working life, such as flexibility, social insecurity, poor working conditions, and lack of occupational health and safety, are considered based on sectors, the construction sector comes to the forefront. The construction sector also has an essential role in affecting production areas in the economy, economic and social development, and creating employment for a significant part of the population. However, due to non-compliance with labor relations, occupational health, and safety measures, the construction sector is a business line where work accidents and occupational diseases are experienced intensely, temporary, uninsured, informal, short-term jobs, insecurity, and irregularity. In addition to the unemployment and poverty dimensions of the construction sector, every year, thousands of workers in Turkey become incapable of work due to occupational diseases, die, get injured, or get sick due to work accidents. This study conducted qualitative research for workers and employers regarding job security/insecurity, unregistered employment, and occupational health in the construction sector in Manisa province. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with fifteen Syrian and Afghan workers residing in Manisa and working in the construction industry. As a result of the research regarding migrant labor in the construction sector, informal economy, low wages, long working hours, zero-hours contracts, work accidents, occupational diseases, occupational health and safety inadequacies, and precarious working conditions such as stratified labor markets have been identified

- Abstract
Salihli is a town located in the south of the plain defined as Gediz Plain or Salihli Plain located on the northern skirts of Bozdağlar. The village of Poyraz, located in the north of Salihli, is twenty-three kilometers away from the district center of Salihli and is adjacent to the Gördes and Köprübaşı districts of Manisa. The Poyraz village tombstones, which are the subject of our research, are historical documents that shed light on the history of the region, and are very important in terms of reflecting the artistic, social and cultural understanding characteristics of the period to which they belong. In our study, a total of twenty grave types dating back to the Ottoman period were identified in the Poyraz village cemetery, including one high-framed grave and nineteen earthen graves. Ten of the tombstones in the identified graves are male, ten are female head tombstones, and four are foot tombstones. The earliest of these tombstones is dated 1798, and the latest is dated 1922. The gravestones were analyzed in terms of inscription content, inscription types, gravestone and head-side figure forms, and ornamental features. The main purpose of the article was to determine the status and importance of the gravestones in the region among Turkish-Islamic gravestones. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ANEMONES ,PHYTOREMEDIATION ,BIOINDICATORS ,PLANT species ,SOIL remediation ,SOIL pollution - Abstract
Today, the use of plants in the cleaning (phytoremediation) of soils polluted with heavy metals and the detection of plants with accumulator properties are gaining importance day by day. However, due to the tolerance of plants against heavy metal toxicity, their ability to be bioindicators varies depending on the plant species, element type, duration of exposure to stress, and the structure of the tissue or organ exposed to stress. To date, many plants have been used in remediation, but there are few reports on the use of ornamental plants for remediation of polluted soils or as bioindicators. In this study, based on this idea, accumulation of heavy metals of Cu, Cd, Pb, Zn were detected comparatively in 3 varieties (var. alba, var. cyanea, var. coccinea) of the Anemone coronaria species with atomic absorption spectrometry in the months of germination (March) and flowering (April) and in the soil they grow. As a result, it has been established that this species can be planted in Manisa to determine the soil pollution in the spring period, as a bioindicator, and to beautify the environment and it has been revealed that this species is a very important plant in terms of phytoremediation and as the symbol plant of Manisa. LEGAL history , *TURKISH literature , *CLASSICAL literature , *CULTURAL history , *EIGHTEENTH century , *ROMANTICISM - Abstract
Registers known as sicillât-ı şer'iyye, kadı registers, court registers and sharia registers, contain documents such as ilam, hüccet, vakfiye, berat and ferman recorded by qadi or naips. In this respect, the documents in the sharia registers are generally divided into two parts as those sent to the qadi by the Ottoman government or statesmen and those issued by the qadi or naips. Sharia registers, which have a rich variety of subjects in terms of the documents they contain, are important sources in the fields of economy, law and social history. In addition, there are also notes and poetries recorded by qadi, regent or clerks in the registers. Poetries can provide information about the period in which they were written, beyond showing the cultural level and area of interest of the person who wrote them. In this study, the poetries found in the Manisa sharia registers of the first half of the eighteenth century will be discussed. In this sense, it is aimed to contribute to the field of Classical Turkish Literature in addition to the cultural history of Manisa. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

RELIGIOUS architecture , *ARCHITECTURAL decoration & ornament , *CONSTRUCTION materials , *HISTORICAL chronology , *CHAPELS ,ISLAMIC countries - Abstract
In Islam, as in all religions, people have built places where they can worship. These religious structures have undergone changes and developments in the future with their plan schemes and construction materials. As with all religions, each worship structure has different names. In Islam, mosques are sacred places for Muslims, as they are considered the house of Allah. The development of mosques has continued since the time of the Prophet Muhammad. Mosques in all Islamic countries show different features from each other in terms of architectural features and decorations. Mosque structures in Islamic countries differ both according to historical chronology and according to regions. During the Ottoman Empire, religious architecture was formed as a continuation of Ottoman culture. The religious architecture of the Ottoman Empire has changed and developed over the centuries. In the Ottoman period, Manisa became a political city where Ottoman princes prepared for the reign from the middle of the 15th century until the end of the 16th century. 16 princes, including "Murad II, Fatih Sultan Mehmet, Suleyman the Magnificent, Selim II, Murad III, Mehmet III and Mustafa I", served as the governor of the sanjak in Manisa. During the period when the princes lived in Manisa, many foundation works such as mosques, madrasahs, inns, baths, soup kitchens, fountains, hospitals, bridges and libraries were built by the princes and their family. Few of these buildings have survived to the present day. Within the scope of the study, the architectural features of the Hatuniye Mosque belonging to the middle of the 15th century in Manisa were examined. The place and architectural features of Manisa Hatuniye Mosque among the 15th and 16th century Manisa mosques were examined. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
A study conducted at the University of Celal Bayar in Manisa, Turkey, focused on the design and synthesis of benzimidazole derivatives as apoptosis-inducing agents by targeting the Bcl-2 protein. The researchers synthesized a novel series of benzimidazole derivatives and tested their activity as Bcl-2 inhibitors on various cancer cells. The results showed that these derivatives exhibited a cytotoxic effect on cancer cells and caused a significant increase in the percentage of apoptotic cells. The study suggests that these benzimidazole derivatives may be potential candidates for apoptosis-inducing agents in cancer treatment by targeting anti-Bcl-2 proteins in cancer cells. İslâm sanatı gelişen fetihlerle birlikte geniş bir coğrafyada kıymetli sanat eserleri ortaya çı-kartmış, zarafet ve ihtişam bakımından birçok milleti kendisine hayran bırakmıştır. Türk cilt sanatı, Anadolu coğrafyasında Selçuklulardan sonra Karamanoğulları Beyliği çatısı altında de-vam etmiş ve Fatih Devri ile birlikte Osmanlı cildi kendi üslûbunu oluşturmuştur. IX. yüzyıldan XIII. yüzyılın sonuna kadar İslam sanatındaki tezyinat programı geometrik desenlerden müte-şekkilken, klasik döneme kadarki zaman diliminde ise yeni arayışlar boy göstermiş ve hendesî bezemeden çiçek motiflerine geçişler yaşanarak teknik bağlamda da farklı denemeler ortaya çıkmıştır. Şehzadeler kenti olan Manisa; Osmanlı Devri’nde birçok ilmi faaliyetlerin icra edil-diği kıymetli bir beldedir. Manisa Yazma Eser Kütüphanesi’ndeki 13.105 adet yazma eser ince-lenerek 14 adet Arapça muhtevaya sahip yazma eser ciltlerinin Erken Osmanlı Dönemine ait olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Cilt sanatı araştırmalarında Erken Devire ait örneklerin az bulunması ve bu dönem tezyinatıyla ilgili tutarlı tespitlerin yapılabilmesi için kütüphanedeki örneklerin mevcudiyeti önem arz etmektedir. Ciltler; desen, teknik ve kompozisyon açısından irdelene-rek diğer müze ve koleksiyonlardaki örneklerle karşılaştırılmıştır.

In this study, seismic events in Kula district (Manisa, Turkey) and its vicinity have been investigated and then natural and artificial seismic activities are discriminated. Total of 77 digital vertical component velocity seismograms of seismic activities with ML≤3.5 magnitude from seismic activity catalogs between 2009 to 2014 recorded by Manisa Kula (KULA) broadband station operated by Bogazici University, Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Resarch Institute Regional Earthquake- Tsunami Monitoring Center (RETMC) were used in this study. The maximum S-wave and maximum P-wave amplitude ratio (Ratio) of vertical component velocity seismograms and power ratio for (1 and 12 sec.) (Complexity-C) and total signal duration (Duration) of the waveform were calculated. The earthquakes and the quarry blasts have been discriminated using linear discriminant function (LDF) and Back Propagation-Feed Forward Neural Networks (BPNNs) that is one of the learning algorithms at the artificial neural networks (ANNs) methods taking correlation between these parameters into consideration. 39 (51%) of the 77 seismic activities were identified as quarry blasts and 38 (49%) of them as earthquakes LDF and ANNs methods have been applied together for the first time for Ratio-C, Ratio-logS and Ratio-duration parameter pairs with the data of Manisa and surroundings, and earthquakes and quarry blasts have been distinguished from each other. LDF and ANNs methods were compared for each pair of parameters. Both of two methods are successful but the ANNs method has higher accuracy percentage values than LDF method when there is sufficient number of data. The accuracy percentages are different for a pair of Ratio versus C, for a pair of Ratio versus logS and for a pair of Ratio versus duration, respectively.

This study presents a framework for assessing the cultural asset values of historic sites around mosques. Case studies are selected from provinces of Manisa, Turkey, namely, Çarşı in Salihli with its new urban development and Pazaryeri in Gördes that is abandoned and currently considered as an archaeological site. Literature review, archive research, historical research, comparative study, and site survey are carried out to evaluate the urban development of site neighborhoods with a retrospective perspective. An approach presenting the effects of urban transformations on the cultural asset values of the historic neighborhood centers is proposed. The cases reveal that the urban aesthetic is nearly all lost today, but the holiness of each site preserves its authenticity while the historic land use is sustained. Their preservation problems are lack of maintenance and abandonment due to disasters, illegal interventions, inappropriate development plans, and unsuitable restoration approaches. The principles proposed for managing these historic environments consider their cultural asset values in relation to urban history, development of coherent strategies for their presentation, and participation of all actors to their preservation and development.

The aim of this research is to map the potential forest fire risk zones using various landscape analysis techniques in Manisa province, Turkey. Forest fire, which is defined as an ecological disaster caused by natural processes or as a result of human activities, causes environmental degradation and fragmentation of the landscape. Therefore, it is very important to produce a fire risk zone map that can be used to minimize the frequency of fire, to prevent damage, to provide a prediction for the problems that may cause fire and to form a decision mechanism for the solution methods. This research utilized CORINE 2018 produced under the framework of the Copernicus Program which is the European Union's Earth Observation Programme coordinated and managed by the European Commission, ASTER Global DEM digital elevation model data obtained from the website of NASA Earthdata, fire archive records based on MODIS satellite images, digital stand map displaying the spatial distribution of tree species, and the OpenStreetMap (OSM) which were used for mapping the existing road network. Vegetation cover, slope, aspect, elevation, distance to settlement, and distance to road variables were used to determine risk zones. The specific weights were assigned to each thematic map layer according to their capacity on fire ignition. The slope, aspect, and elevation maps were generated from the digital elevation model. The distance to settlement map was generated from the CORINE database while the distance to road map was produced from OSM. The Fire Risk Zone Index (FRZI) was utilized to determine forest fire risk zones. According to the generated final fire risk map, almost 25.8% of the study area was predicted to be under very high and highrisk zones. The final forest fire risk model was validated with past fire incidents data that was acquired from MODIS images as fire points. The result of this research showed that out of 149 fire incidents in Manisa between 2001 and 2018, 97 incidents had occurred in very high and highrisk areas. This finding supports that the presented methodology based on RS and GIS techniques is reliable and can be effectively used in the process of delineation of the forest fire risk zones.

EARTHQUAKES ,ARTIFICIAL neural networks ,SEISMOLOGY ,GEODYNAMICS ,NATURAL disaster warning systems - Abstract
In this study, seismic events in Kula district (Manisa, Turkey) and its vicinity have been investigated and then natural and artificial seismic activities are discriminated. Total of 77 digital vertical component velocity seismograms of seismic activities with ML=3.5 magnitude from seismic activity catalogs between 2009 to 2014 recorded by Manisa Kula (KULA) broadband station operated by Bogazici University, Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Resarch Institute Regional Earthquake-Tsunami Monitoring Center (RETMC) were used in this study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

RURAL tourism , *SUSTAINABLE tourism , *RURAL development , *PHYSICAL geography , *HUMAN geography , *RURAL geography - Abstract
Rural areas constitute one of the most important geographical locations in Turkey with the geographical features that sustainable tourism needs to be developed. This branch of tourism not only reduces the economic development process of rural areas, but also provides a healthy transfer of socio-cultural values to future generations. An important part of today's development plans are prepared on the basis of local and these plans and projects are evaluated from this perspective. Rural areas in Manisa province are one of the rare local areas where sustainable tourism can be developed. Manisa, which has a great potential in terms of rural tourism thanks to its physical and human geography elements, is vital to develop rural tourism. During the research, semi-structured interview technique which is one of the qualitative research methods was used. During the interview, 602 people were interviewed to obtain information about the rural tourism of the site. With this method, the existing rural tourism potential of the study area and the opinions and thoughts of the local people on this subject have been reached. The study, which will reveal the things to be done for the development of rural tourism in the province, will provide the basis for the other researches to be done on the tourism of Manisa. - Abstract
Salname-i Devlet-i Aliyye-i Osmaniyye adıyla düzenli olarak tutulan resmî salnameler; Devlet Salnameleri, Nezaret Salnameleri ve Vilayet Salnameleri olarak üç bölümde incelenmektedirler. Böylece XIX. yüzyılın sonlarında bölgenin genel vaziyeti ortaya çıkarılarak geniş bir perspektiften yerel tarih incelemesi yapılmış olacaktır., Manisa, one of the important cities of the Aegean region, has attracted the attention of many civilizations throughout history with its fertile lands. During the Ottoman period, Manisa Sanjak continued to be known as the "City of Şehzades" even today because it was the place where the future Sultans were taught the administration. During the governorship of the şehzades, Manisa, besides being a home of science and wisdom, had its share in terms of construction activities at the highest level, and the historical cultural heritage of today's Manisa has been a product of this rising period. Since ancient times, the city has also developed economically because it is at the intersection point of historical roads that reach the Aegean coasts from Central Anatolia. One of the important sources to be consulted in historical researches is Salnames and they are divided into two groups as official and private. Official salnames held regularly under the name of Salname-i Devlet-i Aliyye-i Osmaniyye and are examined in three parts as State Salnames, Ministry Salnames and Provincial Salnames. In the provincial yearbooks, which are within the scope of our subject, many subjects such as the annual administrative division and organization of the provinces of the Ottoman Empire, their officials, educational institutions, their history, geographical structure, antiquities, population, agricultural and commercial production have been included. In this respect, provincial yearbooks are very valuable main sources that provide important information about the central and provincial organization since the middle of the XIX. century. Saruhan Sanjak will be tried to be discussed in terms of administrative, social, economic, geographical and demographic aspects in the light of the Aydın Province Yearbook of R. 1306 (1890), which is officially kept and is the subject of our study. Thus, at the end of the XIX. century, the general situation of the region will be revealed and local history will be analyzed from a broad perspective

SOCIAL order , *ROBBERY , *RURAL geography , *EIGHTEENTH century , *REST periods , *OTTOMAN Empire - Abstract
The war that took place between 1683 and 1718 and the following developments led to a social and economic collapse in Anatolian cities as well as in the entire empire. Since the majority of the administrators in the rural went to the battle during the Second Siege of Vienna and following wars, bandits who belong to different people and groups attempted banditry events that disturbed the social order in many regions of Anatolia. In fact, this irregular environment that occurred in the rural areas of Ottoman Empire, caused population mobility in cities and rural areas. In the early modern period, the characteristics of the cities formed the central-rural relations. In this context, it is important to evaluate the events of 18th century which was expressed as the period of breaking and change for the Ottoman Empire and the events between 1683 and 1718 which affect this century, in terms of Anatolian cities. In this study, bandit movements caused by the events in administrative, military, economic and social fields between 1683 and 1718 were therefore examined in the example of Manisa District.
