We investigate the effect of surface waves generated by the Faraday instability on a shear-thickening surfactant solution under vertical vibrations. We show that a prolonged oscillation of the surface above the instability onset leads to an increase of the fluid viscosity. This phenomenon is evidenced by comparing the time needed for the instability to develop in the fluid at rest and once the fluid has been shaken above onset: pre-shaking may delay the instability by two orders of magnitude. A simple model based on a time-dependent viscosity is proposed which accounts quantitatively for the experimental observations., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

The shear flow of a triblock copolymer micellar solution (PEO--PPO--PEO Pluronic P84 in brine) is investigated using simultaneous rheological and velocity profile measurements in the concentric cylinder geometry. We focus on two different temperatures below and above the transition temperature $T_c$ which was previously associated with the apparition of a stress plateau in the flow curve. (i) At $T=37.0^\circ$C $T_c$, the stress plateau is shown to correspond to stationary shear-banded states characterized by two high shear rate bands close to the walls and a very weakly sheared central band, together with large slip velocities at the rotor. In both cases, the high shear branch of the flow curve is characterized by flow instability. Wormlike micelle solutions are submitted to small-amplitude oscillatory shear superimposed to steady shear in the shear banding regime. By imposing a shear oscillation, the interface between high- and low-shear regions oscillates in time. A two-fluid semi-phenomenological model is proposed for superposition rheology in the shear banding regime, which allows us to extract a characteristic velocity for the interface dynamics from experiments involving only a standard rheometer. Estimates of the stress diffusion coefficient ${\cal D}$ can also be inferred from such superposition experiments. The behaviour of semi-dilute wormlike micelle solutions under vertical vibrations is investigated using classical measurements of the Faraday instability threshold along with two new experiments based on particle imaging velocimetry and birefringence. We provide evidence for the presence of oscillations of the critical acceleration and wave number with the vibration frequency, which are linked to oscillations of the velocity and birefringence fields along the vertical direction. These observations are interpreted in terms of standing elastic waves across the fluid layer. Such an interpretation is confirmed numerically by using the model proposed by S. Kumar [Phys. Rev. E 65, 026305 (2002)] for a viscoelastic fluid to calculate the velocity and deformation fields. Finally, further birefringence experiments above the instability threshold show that the Faraday instability does not induce disentanglement and breakage of the micellar network., Comment: 27 pages, 13 figures

The flow behavior of a viscoelastic organogel is investigated using ultrasonic velocimetry combined with rheometry. Our gel presents a decreasing flow curve, i.e., the measured stress decreases as a function of the applied shear rate. Strikingly, we note that the local flow curve calculated from the velocity profiles also exhibits a decreasing part. We attribute this regime to the presence of a fracturing process and three-dimensional motions in the bulk of the sample., Comment: 13 pages, 19 figures

Recent experimental techniques used to investigate shear banding are reviewed. After recalling the rheological signature of shear-banded flows, we summarize the various tools for measuring locally the microstructure and the velocity field under shear. Local velocity measurements using dynamic light scattering and ultrasound are emphasized. The nonlinear rheological response of soft glassy materials is addressed experimentally by focusing on concentrated emulsions where interdroplet attraction is tuned through varying the surfactant content. Velocity profiles are recorded using ultrasonic velocimetry simultaneously to global rheological data in the Couette geometry. Our data show that non-adhesive and adhesive emulsions have radically different flow behaviors in the vicinity of yielding: while the flow remains homogeneous in the non-adhesive emulsion and the Herschel-Bulkley model for a yield stress fluid describes the data very accurately, the adhesive system displays shear localization and does not follow a simple constitutive equation, suggesting that the mechanisms involved in yielding transitions are not universal., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, to appear in Physical Review Letters

Velocity profiles in a wormlike micelle solution (CTAB in D2O) are recorded using ultrasound every 2 s after a step-like shear rate into the shear-banding regime. The stress relaxation occurs over more than six hours and corresponds to the very slow nucleation and growth of the high-shear band. Moreover, oscillations of the interface position with a period of about 50 s are observed during the growth process. High-frequency ultrasonic pulses at 36 MHz are used to measure velocity profiles in a complex fluid sheared in the Couette geometry. Our technique is based on time-domain cross-correlation of ultrasonic speckle signals backscattered by the moving medium. Post-processing of acoustic data allows us to record a velocity profile in 0.02--2 s with a spatial resolution of 40 $\mu$m over 1 mm. After a careful calibration using a Newtonian suspension, the technique is applied to a sheared lyotropic lamellar phase seeded with polystyrene spheres of diameter 3--10 $\mu$m. Time-averaged velocity profiles reveal the existence of inhomogeneous flows, with both wall slip and shear bands, in the vicinity of a shear-induced ``layering'' transition. Slow transient regimes and/or temporal fluctuations can also be resolved and exhibit complex spatio-temporal flow behaviors with sometimes more than two shear bands., Comment: 15 pages, 18 figures, submitted to Eur. We analyze the temporal fluctuations of the flow field associated to a shear-induced transition in a lyotropic lamellar phase: the layering transition of the onion texture. In the first part of this work [Salmon et al., submitted to Phys. Rev. E], we have evidenced banded flows at the onset of this shear-induced transition which are well accounted for by the classical picture of shear-banding. In the present paper, we focus on the temporal fluctuations of the flow field recorded in the coexistence domain. These striking dynamics are very slow (100--1000s) and cannot be due to external mechanical noise. Using velocimetry coupled to structural measurements, we show that these fluctuations are due to a motion of the interface separating the two differently sheared bands. Such a motion seems to be governed by the fluctuations of $\sigma^\star$, the local stress at the interface between the two bands. Our results thus provide more evidence for the relevance of the classical mechanical approach of shear-banding even if the mechanism leading to the fluctuations of $\sigma^\star$ remains unclear.

Using velocity profile measurements based on dynamic light scattering and coupled to structural and rheological measurements in a Couette cell, we present evidences for a shear-banding scenario in the shear flow of the onion texture of a lyotropic lamellar phase. Time-averaged measurements clearly show the presence of structural shear-banding in the vicinity of a shear-induced transition, associated to the nucleation and growth of a highly sheared band in the flow. Our experiments also reveal the presence of slip at the walls of the Couette cell. Using a simple mechanical approach, we demonstrate that our data confirms the classical assumption of the shear-banding picture, in which the interface between bands lies at a given stress $\sigma^\star$. We also outline the presence of large temporal fluctuations of the flow field, which are the subject of the second part of this paper [Salmon {\it et al.}, submitted to Phys. Rev. E].
