1. Health Related Quality of Life Among Private School Teachers in Chengalpattu District, Tamil Nadu, India-A Cross Sectional Study

Abstract

Background: Teachers are the foundation of any civilized society, as they preserve information, wisdom, and ideals. The study was conducted to analyze the Health-Related Quality Of Life among private school teachers and associate the findings with various demographic and occupational parameters. Methodology: This cross-sectional study was conducted among 300 private school teachers in Chengalpattu district from March-to May 2024.Sample size was determined by multistage random sampling technique. A semi-structured questionnaire consisting of background, occupation related details, and SF-36 to assess the HRQOL were used to collect data. Data was entered in excel and analysed using SPSS version 26. Results: Out of 300 teachers,233 were female and 152 were above the age of 40. Most affected domains were Bodily Pain and General Health Perception. In both these domains, very low mean levels of quality of life were significantly associated with teachers age more than 40 years old, those who got monthly income of more than 40k, married, teaching experience more than 20 years, those who travelled more than 60 minutes to reach school and those who had comorbidities. Conclusions: At least one variable across all domains analysed was associated with lower quality of life scores. Administrators and policymakers must provide appropriate health education or health promotion programs and comprehensive prevention strategies for improving their HRQOL.

Abstract

Introduction: In head and neck cancer (HNC) radiotherapy, parotid, submandibular, and minor salivary glands are often incidentally irradiated. Hence, Xerostomia is the most significant disabling side-effect, to improve the quality of life, it should be reduced. The study was to evaluate the parotid dose and PTV coverage in post operated Oral cancer patients using Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) technique.Material and Methods: The authors generated VMAT plans for 14 post operated oral cancer patients, where primary disease crossed midline or nodal stage ≥ 2. The doses to the moderate high-risk volume of the clinical target volume (CTV) and planning target volume (PTV) were 60Gy in 30 fractions. The low-risk volume received a dose to the CTV and PTV of 54Gy in 30 fractions. Plans were made for each patient, and the dose to D95 and D98 of target volumes was analyzed. The mean dose of the parotid and parotid minus PTV volumes were analyzed and compared with target doses (D98 & D95). Results: Median dose to the ipsilateral parotid gland was 54.45Gy and to the ipsilateral parotid gland minus PTV was 45.60Gy while to the contralateral parotid gland median dose was 16.31Gy, (mean is ranging from 14.01 to 17.06Gy) and to the contralateral parotid gland minus PTV was 14.92 (mean is ranging from 12.42 to 15.18Gy) after achieving the 95% coverage of PTV.Conclusion: Better sparing of contralateral parotid glands with the help of VMAT technique in post-operative HNC patients is possible, which can prevent xerostomia in most patients.

Abstract

This research looks on the effectiveness of using nano-mineral admixtures in place of some cement for making self-compacting concrete (SCC). The goal is to improve concrete’s mechanical qualities while resolving the environmental issues raised by the manufacture of cement. Using an experimental approach, the study looks at several percentages (0%, 2.5%, 5%, and 30%) of nano-sized materials as partial replacements for regular Portland cement, including fly ash, silica fume, phospho-gypsum, and alccofine. Slump flow, J-ring, and L-box tests are used to evaluate the concrete’s fresh properties, including flowability, passing ability, and separator resistance. Evaluation of the toughened properties by tensile, flexural, and compressive strength tests provides insight into the achieved performance gains. Additionally, durability properties such as RCPT, water absorption and alkaline test were examined in terms of durability. The results point to the potential of nano minerals as sustainable alternatives in concrete by indicating a considerable improvement in the mechanical characteristics and durability of concrete with adequate nano mineral additive content. By giving a thorough analysis of nano mineral admixtures in SCC, this study advances the field and provides insightful information for the researchers to find the optimum replacement.

Abstract

Background: Patient satisfaction is crucial for research, administration, and planning. Since it reveals the effectiveness of the provider, customer happiness is of utmost importance as a gauge of the quality of service. Inpatient satisfaction is an essential tool to identify the level of patient satisfaction and it is one of the important goals of any healthcare system. The objective of the study is to validate the questionnaire developed and to assess the inpatient satisfaction level among patients admitted to OBG ward in a tertiary care hospital. Methods: A cross-sectional study was done among 160 women inpatients admitted in the OBG ward in a tertiary care hospital, Chengalpattu. Patient satisfaction was measured by a validated questionnaire with seven domains, the data were collected by face-to-face interview method. Results: The mean age of the respondent were 28 years. 60% of respondents were highly satisfied with the effectiveness of the treatment. Only 33.8% of respondents were highly satisfied with the diet food served and 56.3% were highly satisfied with the cleanliness of wards, and restrooms. Conclusions: The results obtained from the present study can serve as a baseline to compare the future survey and helps to provide healthcare services that fulfil patient desires and expectations.

Abstract

The NOvA collaboration reports cross-section measurements for $\nu_{\mu}$ charged-current interactions with low hadronic energy (maximum kinetic energy of 250 MeV for protons and 175 MeV for pions) in the NOvA Near Detector. The results are presented as a double-differential cross section as a function of the direct observables of the final-state muon kinematics. Results are also presented as a single-differential cross section as a function of the derived square of the four-momentum transfer, $Q^{2}$, and as a function of the derived neutrino energy. The data correspond to an accumulated 8.09$\times10^{20}$ protons-on-target (POT) in the neutrino mode of the NuMI beam, with a narrow band of neutrino energies peaked at 1.8 GeV. The analysis provides a sample of neutrino-nucleus interactions with an enhanced fraction of quasi-elastic and two-particle-two-hole (2p2h) interactions. This enhancement allows quantitative comparisons with various nuclear models. We find strong disagreement between data and theory-based models in various regions of the muon kinematic phase space, especially in the forward muon direction., Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures. Abstract

Double- and single-differential cross sections for inclusive charged-current neutrino-nucleus scattering are reported for the kinematic domain 0 to 2 GeV/c in three-momentum transfer and 0 to 2 GeV in available energy, at a mean muon-neutrino energy of 1.86 GeV. The measurements are based on an estimated 995,760 muon-neutrino CC interactions in the scintillator medium of the NOvA Near Detector. The subdomain populated by 2-particle-2-hole reactions is identified by the cross-section excess relative to predictions for neutrino-nucleus scattering that are constrained by a data control sample. Models for 2-particle-2- hole processes are rated by chi-square comparisons of the predicted-versus-measured muon-neutrino CC inclusive cross section over the full phase space and in the restricted subdomain. Shortfalls are observed in neutrino generator predictions obtained using the theory-based Val`encia and SuSAv2 2p2h models., Comment: 20 pages, 14 figures

Abstract

This Letter reports a search for charge-parity ($CP$) symmetry violating nonstandard interactions (NSI) of neutrinos with matter using the NOvA Experiment, and examines their effects on the determination of the standard oscillation parameters. Data from $\nu_{\mu}(\bar{\nu}_{\mu})\rightarrow\nu_{\mu}(\bar{\nu}_{\mu})$ and $\nu_{\mu}(\bar{\nu}_{\mu})\rightarrow\nu_{e}(\bar{\nu}_{e})$ oscillation channels are used to measure the effect of the NSI parameters $\varepsilon_{e\mu}$ and $\varepsilon_{e\tau}$. With 90% CL the magnitudes of the NSI couplings are constrained to be $|\varepsilon_{e\mu}| \, \lesssim 0.3$ and $|\varepsilon_{e\tau}| \, \lesssim 0.4$. A degeneracy at $|\varepsilon_{e\tau}| \, \approx 1.8$ is reported, and we observe that the presence of NSI limits sensitivity to the standard $CP$ phase $\delta_{\tiny\text{CP}}$.

Abstract

NOvA is a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment that measures oscillations in charged-current $\nu_{\mu} \rightarrow \nu_{\mu}$ (disappearance) and $\nu_{\mu} \rightarrow \nu_{e}$ (appearance) channels, and their antineutrino counterparts, using neutrinos of energies around 2 GeV over a distance of 810 km. In this work we reanalyze the dataset first examined in our previous paper [Phys. Rev. D 106, 032004 (2022)] using an alternative statistical approach based on Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo. We measure oscillation parameters consistent with the previous results. We also extend our inferences to include the first NOvA measurements of the reactor mixing angle $\theta_{13}$ and the Jarlskog invariant. We use these results to quantify the strength of our inferences about CP violation, as well as to examine the effects of constraints from short-baseline measurements of $\theta_{13}$ using antineutrinos from nuclear reactors when making NOvA measurements of $\theta_{23}$. Our long-baseline measurement of $\theta_{13}$ is also shown to be consistent with the reactor measurements, supporting the general applicability and robustness of the PMNS framework for neutrino oscillations., Comment: 20 pages, 17 figures; version accepted by Phys. Abstract

Measuring observables to constrain models using maximum-likelihood estimation is fundamental to many physics experiments. Wilks' theorem provides a simple way to construct confidence intervals on model parameters, but it only applies under certain conditions. These conditions, such as nested hypotheses and unbounded parameters, are often violated in neutrino oscillation measurements and other experimental scenarios. Monte Carlo methods can address these issues, albeit at increased computational cost. In the presence of nuisance parameters, however, the best way to implement a Monte Carlo method is ambiguous. Here, we present the method used in the NOvA experiment, which we call `Profiled Feldman--Cousins.' We show that it achieves more accurate frequentist coverage in toy experiments approximating a neutrino oscillation measurement than other methods commonly in use. Finally, we describe an implementation of this method in the context of the NOvA experiment., Comment: 28 pages, 14 figures

Abstract

The inclusive electron neutrino charged-current cross section is measured in the NOvA near detector using $8.02\times10^{20}$ protons-on-target (POT) in the NuMI beam. The sample of GeV electron neutrino interactions is the largest analyzed to date and is limited by $\simeq$ 17\% systematic rather than the $\simeq$ 7.4\% statistical uncertainties. The double-differential cross section in final-state electron energy and angle is presented for the first time, together with the single-differential dependence on $Q^{2}$ (squared four-momentum transfer) and energy, in the range 1 GeV $ \leq E_{\nu} < $6 GeV. Detailed comparisons are made to the predictions of the GENIE, GiBUU, NEUT, and NuWro neutrino event generators. The data do not strongly favor a model over the others consistently across all three cross sections measured, though some models have especially good or poor agreement in the single differential cross section vs. $Q^{2}$.

Abstract

Abstract Background IRCU is traditionally considered as lifestyle disease (associations with, among others, overweight, obesity, hypertension, type-2 diabetes), arising from excess, in 24 h urine, of calcium (Ca) salts (calcium oxalate (CaOx), calcium phosphate (CaPi)), supersaturation of, and crystallization in, tubular fluid and urine, causing crystal-induced epithelial cell damage, proteinuria, crystal aggregation and uroliths. Methods Another picture emerges from the present uncontrolled study of 154 male adult IRCU patients (75 stone-bearing (SB) and 79 age-matched stone-free (SF)), in whom stone-forming and other parameters in fasting urine and plasma were contrasted with five biomarkers (see footnote) of oxidative metabolism (OM), without and with variation of markers. Results 1) In SB vs. SF unstratified OM biomarkers were statistically unchanged, but the majority of patients was overweight; despite, in SB vs. SF urine pH, total and non-albumin protein concentration were elevated, fractional urinary uric acid excretion and blood bicarbonate decreased, whereas urine volume, sodium, supersaturation with CaOx and CaPi (as hydroxyapatite) were unchanged; 2) upon variation of OM markers (strata below and above median) numerous stone parameters differed significant!)', among others urine volume, total protein, Ca/Pi ratio, pH, sodium, potassium, plasma Ca/Pi ratio and parathyroid hormone, blood pressure, renal excretion of non-albumin protein and other substances; 3) a significant shift from SF to SB patients occurred with increase of urine pH, decrease of blood bicarbonate, and increase of diastolic blood pressure, whereas increase of plasma uric acid impacted only marginally; 4) in both SF and SB patients a strong curvilinear relationship links a rise of urine Ca/Pi to urine Ca/Pi divided by plasma Ca/Pi, but in SB urine Ca/Pi failed to correlate significantly with urine hydroxyapatite supersaturation; 5) also in SB, plasma Ca/Pi and urinary nitrate were negatively correlated, whereas in SF plasma Ca/Pi ratio, PTH and body mass index correlated positively; 6) multivariate regression analysis revealed that PTH, body mass index and nitrate together could explain 22 (p = 0.002) and only 7 (p = 0.06) per cent of variation of plasma Ca/Pi in SF and SB, respectively Conclusions In IRCU a) numerous constituents of fasting urine, plasma, blood and blood pressure change in response to variation of OM biomarkers, suggesting involvement of OM imbalance as factor in functional deterioration of tissue; b) in the majority of patients a positive exponential relationship links urine Ca/Pi to urine Ca/Pi divided by plasma Ca/Pi, presumably to accumulate Ca outside tubular lumen, thereby minimizing intratubular and urinary Ca salt crystallization; c) alteration of interactions of low urine nitrate, PTH and Ca/Pi in plasma may be of importance in formation of new Ca stone and co-regulation of dynamics of blood vasculature; d) overweight, combined with OM-modified renal interstitial environment appears to facilitate these processes, carrying the risk that CaPi mineral develops within or/and close to blood vessel tissue, and spreads towards urothelium. For future research focussing on IRCU pathogenesis studies are recommended on the role of affluent lifestyle mediated renal ischemia, mild hypertensive nephropathy, rise of uric acid precursor oxypurines and uricemia, clarifying also why loss of significance of interrelationships of OM biomarkers with traditional Ca stone risk factors is characteristic for SB patients. Abstract

This Letter reports a search for charge-parity (CP) symmetry violating non-standard interactions (NSI) of neutrinos with matter using the NOvA Experiment, and examines their effects on the determination of the standard oscillation parameters. Data from $\nu_{\mu}(\bar{\nu}_{\mu})\rightarrow\nu_{\mu}(\bar{\nu}_{\mu})$ and $\nu_{\mu}(\bar{\nu}_{\mu})\rightarrow\nu_{e}(\bar{\nu}_{e})$ oscillation channels are used to measure the effect of the NSI parameters $\varepsilon_{e\mu}$ and $\varepsilon_{e\tau}$. With 90% C.L. the magnitudes of the NSI couplings are constrained to be $|\varepsilon_{e\mu}| \, \lesssim 0.3$ and $|\varepsilon_{e\tau}| \, \lesssim 0.4$. A degeneracy at $|\varepsilon_{e\tau}| \, \approx 1.8$ is reported, and we observe that the presence of NSI limits sensitivity to the standard CP phase $\delta_{\tiny\text{CP}}$.

Abstract

This article addresses stress-strength reliability estimation in s-out-of-k systems under progressive type-II censoring. The system consists of components facing common stress, where stress and strength variable follows independent new flexible exponential (NFE) distributions, sharing a common parameter. The estimation procedure is carried out using MLE, Bayesian estimation and uniformly minimum variance unbiased estimation (UMVUE) techniques. MLE is derived for known and unknown common parameters. Bayesian estimates are obtained using Lindley's approximation and Markov chain Monte Carlo techniques due to the complexity of obtaining the exact Bayesian estimates, when the common parameter is unknown. Moreover, UMVUE is derived when the common parameter is known. The 95% asymptotic confidence interval, highest posterior density credible intervals, and Bayesian credible intervals, are constructed. An extensive simulation study is carried out to compare the performance of various censoring schemes and estimation methods. Abstract

It has hitherto been widely considered that a mixing layer is unstable at all Reynolds numbers. However this is untenable from energy considerations, which demand that there must exist a non-zero Reynolds number below which disturbances cannot extract energy from the mean flow. It is shown here that a linear stability analysis of similarity solutions of the plane mixing layer, including the effects of flow non-parallelism, using the minimal composite theory and the properties of adjoints following Govindarajan & Narasimha (2005), resolves the issue by yielding non-zero critical Reynolds numbers for coflowing streams of any velocity ratio. The critical Reynolds number so found, based on the vorticity thickness and the velocity differential as scales, varies in the narrow range of 59 to 55 as the velocity ratio goes from zero to unity., Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Spondylolisthesis is a spinal condition that affects the lumbosacral vertebrae. This disease causes one of the lower vertebrae to slip forward onto the bone directly beneath it. It's a painful condition but treatable in most cases. Although spondylolisthesis can be asymptomatic, patients with degenerative and isthmic spondylolisthesis typically present with low back pain, neurologic symptoms, and/or radicular symptoms. The surgical treatment of spondylolisthesis is indicated for cases of neurogenic claudication, intractable radicular pain, severe low-back pain, presence of neurological symptoms, failure of conservative management, radiological instability, progressive worsening of the listheses, Meyerding grade III and IV listhesis, and spondylosis. The ideal surgical treatment remains controversial. We have compared the functional outcome following instrumented posterior lumbar interbody fusion and posterolateral fusion for adult spondylolisthesis in our study. The prospective study was conducted in the Department of Orthopaedics. A total of 30 patients who satisfied both the inclusion and exclusion criteria and gave informed consent were recruited for the study from January to December 2019. The patients were randomized into two groups. Of 30 patients, Group 1(n=18) underwent Posterior lumbar interbody fusion and Group 2 (n=12) underwent Posterolateral fusion. Random number generators were used for allotting the patients to the specified group. Using Oswestry Disability Index, Japanese Orthopaedic Association Score and Visual Analog Score were used for pre-operative and post-operative functional scoring. The mean age among those who received PLIF was 53.67 years and among those who received PLF was 55.17 years. Spondylolisthesis at L4-L5 comprised 66.7% among those who received PLIF and 58.3 % among those who received PLF. Neurological deficit was present in 66.7% of the participants who had received PLIF and 100% of the participants who have received PLF. Concerning those who had received PLIF as treatment, 11 patients had excellent and 7 patients had better outcome in PLIF group, 7 patients had excellent and 5 patient had better outcome in PLF group.. The mean JOAS pre-intervention score was 6.66 and 6.40 for PLIF and PLF groups, respectively. In the 6th month mean JOAS score of the PLIF group was 11.16 and that of the PLF group was 10.16. The pre-intervention mean VAS score was 6.44 and 6.50 for PLIF and PLF groups, respectively. In both, the groups over the follow-up period mean VAS score had shown a decreasing trend. Our study did not show any significant difference in functional outcome between both groups, however there seems to better short term (3 months) and mid-term (6 months) pain relief in PLIF group when compared to PLF group. Long term follow-up studies along with radiological outcome may help in establishing superiority between both procedures.

26. Hindrances to Responsible Consumption: A Mini Review

Abstract

Sustainable development goals prescribe desirable behavior by individuals and firms. But behavioral irrationalities are likely to hinder responsible consumption by members of the society. Methods: This mini review is intended to identify behavioral irrationalities. A literature review was undertaken to identify empirical papers that studied the link between such irrationalities and consumption behavior. Results: Nineteen empirical papers that investigated irrationalities such as anchoring, loss aversion, sunk cost fallacy, framing, and endowment effect showed that these factors do affect consumption behavior. Conclusion: This study has identified irrationalities that affect consumer behavior and also the achievement of sustainable development goals. An extensive study is needed to identify the hindrances to responsible consumption.

Abstract

The inclusive electron neutrino charged-current cross section is measured in the NOvA near detector using 8.02×1020 protons-on-target in the NuMI beam. The sample of GeV electron neutrino interactions is the largest analyzed to date and is limited by ≃17% systematic rather than the ≃7.4% statistical uncertainties. The double-differential cross section in final-state electron energy and angle is presented for the first time, together with the single-differential dependence on Q2 (squared four-momentum transfer) and energy, in the range 1 GeV≤Eν<6 GeV. Detailed comparisons are made to the predictions of the GENIE, GiBUU, NEUT, and NuWro neutrino event generators. The data do not strongly favor a model over the others consistently across all three cross sections measured, though some models have especially good or poor agreement in the single differential cross section vs Q2.

“Are we asking the right questions?” seems cliché, but for ChatGPT, it is a pivotal tool to ensure the accuracy of responses. While ChatGPT-3.5’s training on the vast database promises to revolutionize STEM education and research, this investigation shows the importance of precise communication and prompt engineering in guiding ChatGPT-3.5 toward reliable and accurate responses, particularly in chemistry. For instance, emphasizing context, clearly defining symbols, and focusing on field-specific instructions can dramatically improve its performance. Furthermore, avoiding open-ended prompts and strategically using repetition can further enhance its accuracy. The iterative prompt design, demonstrated through a series of adjustments, illustrates how seemingly minor refinements, such as substituting “least” for “lowest”, profoundly impact the output. This study highlights the essential role of human oversight, including the construction of well-crafted prompts, in guarding reliable information and nurturing a productive “Human–AI” (HAI) partnership.

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Research on the benefits of 'arts' interventions to improve individuals' physical, social and psychological well-being is growing, but evidence on implementation and scale-up into health and social care systems is lacking. This protocol reports the SHAPER-Implement programme (Scale-up of Health-Arts Programmes Effectiveness-Implementation Research), aimed at studying the impact, implementation and scale-up of: Melodies for Mums (M4M), a singing intervention for postnatal depression; and Dance for Parkinson's (PD-Ballet) a dance intervention for Parkinson's disease. We examine how they could be embedded in clinical pathways to ensure their longer-term sustainability. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: A randomised two-arm effectiveness-implementation hybrid type 2 trial design will be used across M4M/PD-Ballet. We will assess the implementation in both study arms (intervention vs control), and the cost-effectiveness of implementation. The design and measures, informed by literature and previous research by the study team, were refined through stakeholder engagement. Participants (400 in M4M; 160 in PD-Ballet) will be recruited to the intervention or control group (2:1 ratio). Further implementation data will be collected from stakeholders involved in referring to, delivering or supporting M4M/PD-Ballet (N=25-30 for each intervention).A mixed-methods approach (surveys and semi-structured interviews) will be employed. 'Acceptability' (measured by the 'Acceptability Intervention Measure') is the primary implementation endpoint for M4M/PD-Ballet. Relationships between clinical and implementation outcomes, implementation strategies (eg, training) and outcomes will be explored using generalised linear mixed models. Qualitative data will assess factors affecting the acceptability, feasibility and appropriateness of M4M/PD-Ballet, implementation strategies and longer-term sustainability. Abstract

BACKGROUND: Postnatal depression (PND) affects 13% of new mothers, with numbers rising during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite this prevalence, many women have difficulty with or hesitancy towards accessing pharmacological and/or psychological interventions. Group-based mother-baby activities, however, have a good uptake, with singing improving maternal mental health and the mother-infant relationship. The recent lockdowns highlight the importance of adapting activities to an online platform that is wide-reaching and accessible. AIMS: The SHAPER-PNDO study will primarily analyse the feasibility of a 6-week online singing intervention, Melodies for Mums (M4M), for mothers with PND who are experiencing barriers to treatment. The secondary aim of the SHAPER-PNDO study will be to analyse the clinical efficacy of the 6-week M4M intervention for symptoms of postnatal depression. METHODS: A total of 120 mothers and their babies will be recruited for this single-arm study. All dyads will attend 6 weekly online singing sessions, facilitated by Breathe Arts Health Research. Assessments will be conducted on Zoom at baseline and week 6, with follow-ups at weeks 16 and 32, and will contain interviews for demographics, mental health, and social circumstances, and biological samples will be taken for stress markers. Qualitative interviews will be undertaken to understand the experiences of women attending the sessions and the facilitators delivering them. Finally, data will be collected on recruitment, study uptake and attendance of the programme, participant retention, and acceptability of the intervention. DISCUSSION: The SHAPER-PNDO study will focus on the feasibility, alongside the clinical efficacy, of an online delivery of M4M, available to all mothers with PND. We hope to provide a more accessible, effective treatment option for mothers with PND that can be available both during and outside of the pandemic for mothers who would otherwise struggle to attend in-person sessions

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Hyperglycaemia is commonly observed in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) while receiving enteral nutrition (EN) in hospital, and hyperglycaemia has been shown to be associated with poor clinical outcomes. The aim of this study was to assess the glycaemic status of patients with DM who received EN during hospital admission and evaluate the impact of intervention by a specialist diabetes team (SDT) on glycaemic control and clinical outcomes of these patients. SUBJECTS/METHODS: A retrospective review of patients with DM who required EN during hospital admission was conducted. We compared patient characteristics, glycaemic profile and clinical outcomes between patients who were managed by SDT and those who were managed by the admitting team. RESULTS: Seventy-four patients with DM on EN were included in this study, of whom 27 were managed by SDT while on EN. Compared with patients managed by the admitting team, those who were reviewed by SDT had better glycaemic control during the period of EN as well as during the 24 h after EN was ceased. These patients also had shorter length-of-stay in hospital and lower in-patient mortality. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings confirmed that there was a role for SDT in managing patients with DM who received EN during their hospital admission. These patients had improved glycaemic control while receiving EN and had better clinical outcomes. Further prospective studies will be required to validate the findings of this study. Abstract

Introduction: In head and neck cancer (HNC) radiotherapy, parotid, submandibular, and minor salivary glands are often incidentally irradiated. Hence, Xerostomia is the most significant disabling side-effect, to improve the quality of life, it should be reduced. The study was to evaluate the parotid dose and PTV coverage in post operated Oral cancer patients using Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) technique. Material and Methods: The authors generated VMAT plans for 14 post operated oral cancer patients, where primary disease crossed midline or nodal stage ≥ 2. The doses to the moderate high-risk volume of the clinical target volume (CTV) and planning target volume (PTV) were 60Gy in 30 fractions. The low-risk volume received a dose to the CTV and PTV of 54Gy in 30 fractions. Plans were made for each patient, and the dose to D95 and D98 of target volumes was analyzed. The mean dose of the parotid and parotid minus PTV volumes were analyzed and compared with target doses (D98 & D95). Results: Median dose to the ipsilateral parotid gland was 54.45Gy and to the ipsilateral parotid gland minus PTV was 45.60Gy while to the contralateral parotid gland median dose was 16.31Gy, (mean is ranging from 14.01 to 17.06Gy) and to the contralateral parotid gland minus PTV was 14.92 (mean is ranging from 12.42 to 15.18Gy) after achieving the 95% coverage of PTV. Conclusion: Better sparing of contralateral parotid glands with the help of VMAT technique in postoperative HNC patients is possible, which can prevent xerostomia in most patients.
