Κατά τη διάρκεια των αιώνων η ανθρωπότητα έχει δείξει τεράστιο ενδιαφέρον για τις θεαματικές εκδηλώσεις βίας. Από τις πραγματικές τελετουργίες των θανατηφόρων πολεμικών αθλημάτων της ρωμαϊκής αρένας έως τις μεσαιωνικές επιδείξεις δημοσίων βασανιστηρίων μέχρι τις ταινίες δράσης του Χόλιγουντ και ταινίες τρόμου/σπλάτερ, μέχρι κείμενα νέων μέσων όπως selfies, μιμίδια και βιντεοπαιχνίδια στρατιωτικών σκοποβολής. Τι έχει διατηρήσει τη γοητεία της ανθρωπότητας να βλέπει τους ανθρώπους να προκαλούν πόνο και να υποφέρουν ο ένας στον άλλο για πάνω από δύο χιλιετίες; Αυτή είναι μια σύνθετη ερώτηση που αψηφά μια απλή απάντηση. Καμία θεωρία ή μεμονωμένη μελέτη δεν μπορεί να εξηγήσει την ακόρεστη όρεξη της ανθρωπότητας για σκληρότητα με επίκεντρο το βλέμμα και η δολοφονία γι' αυτήν έχει εμφανιστεί σε όλες τις περιόδους της παγκόσμιας ιστορίας. Ορισμένες κοινωνικές, πολιτιστικές και πολιτικές ιδέες που επικεντρώνονται στην προβολή της κυριαρχίας, της διοικητικής δικαιοσύνης, της οικοδόμησης του έθνους και της διατήρησης της υγείας της κοινότητας είναι διδακτικές. Ωστόσο, οι δεσμοί μεταξύ της θεαματικής βίας, των αναδυόμενων νέων τεχνολογιών μέσων (από τις ψηφιακές ταινίες στα βιντεοπαιχνίδια, τις selfies στα μιμίδια, τα bots των social media έως τα προγνωστικά μέσα) και τον νεοφιλελεύθερο καπιταλισμό παραβλέπονται και δεν μελετώνται καθόλου. Αυτή η διατριβή ρωτά πώς οι καπιταλιστικές πρακτικές ενισχύονται από ριζοσπαστικές και αισθητικοποιημένες μορφές διαμεσολαβούμενης βίας - πρακτικές που σε ορισμένες περιοχές του κόσμου υπάρχουν ως μέρος της καθημερινής ζωής και όπου οι πολιτικές δυνάμεις με επίκεντρο την ευπάθεια των σωμάτων χρησιμοποιούν ψηφιακές τεχνολογίες και δίκτυα μέσων κοινωνικής δικτύωσης για να αποκτήσουν αναγνώριση, νομιμότητα και ακόμη και σταρ., Throughout the centuries humanity has shown huge interest in spectacular displays of violence. From the real-world rituals of lethal combat sports of the Roman arena to medieval displays of public torture to Hollywood action and horror/splatter films, to new media texts such as selfies, memes and military shooter videogames. What has sustained mankind’s fascination in watching humans inflict pain and suffer on one another for over two millenniums? This is a complex question that defies a simple answer. No one theory or single piece of scholarship can account for mankind’s insatiable appetite for gaze-centric cruelty and killing for it has appeared in all periods in global history. Certain social, cultural, and political ideas centering around the projection of sovereign power, administrative justice, nation-building, and preservation of community health are instructive. However, the links between spectacular violence, emerging new media technologies (from digital films to videogames, selfies to memes, social media bots to predictive media) and neoliberal capitalism are overlooked and understudied. This disseration asks how capitalist practices are fortified by radical and aestheticized forms of mediated violence – practices that in certain regions of the world exist as part of everyday life and where a political forces centered on the vulnerability of body use digital technologies and social media networks to gain recognition, legitimacy and even stardom.

Usage of emotional AI across all aspects of society in the UK and Japan, two of the most technologically advanced countries in the world, is fast increasing. It raises urgent questions about the body, intimacy, identity, relationships, intrusiveness, dignity, manipulation and reliability of data inferences. The aim of this scoping project has been to understand ethical questions around emergence of these technologies in Japan and the UK, but also to find out what we can learn from each other.To this end, we ran 3 workshops, 2 in Japan at the Ritsumeikan Asia PacificUniversity’s Tokyo campus in July 2019 and 1 in the UK at the Digital Catapult in September 2019. The first workshop on July 9th considered the impact of emotional AI on commercial and civic life. The second workshop on 12th July examinedsecurity and policing uses of emotional AI. At the final workshop, wefurther reflected on lessons from Japan, and engaged with UKstakeholders for their perspectives on key emotional AI issues. Thisshort report documents key themes that emerged from discussions atthe various events. We had a wide diversity of participants from a rangeof disciplinary backgrounds, including: anthropology, new mediastudies, philosophy, computing, law, art, literature, journalism andcriminology, to name but a few. This led to a range of opinions andinsights.The first workshop considered the potential of emotional AI,exploring social benefits and harms. We considered the technologies andtheir commercial applications in Japan and the UK. We also examinedhow citizens might feel about them, why they would feel this way andwhat laws and governance that guide these technologies are aiming todo in order to enable citizens to live well with emotional AI. With thesecond workshop, we explored the deployment of emotional AI in arange of security and law enforcement contexts, particularly withpredictive policing and visual surveillance. We also examined recenttrends around voice and facial recognition technologies, particularly atborders and in public spaces; the role of smart bots in manipulating andtriggering user emotions in social media and their use in computationalpropaganda shaping civic discourse. With the third workshop, weexamined our preliminary analysis from the Japanese workshops andconsidered future commercial and research agendas.
