The consumption of diets rich in saturated fats is known to be associated with higher mortality. The adoption of healthy habits, for instance adhering to a Mediterranean diet, has proved to exert a preventive effect towards cardiovascular diseases and dyslipidemia. Little is known about how a suboptimal diet can affect brain function, structure, and the mechanisms involved. The aims of this study were to examine how a high-fat diet can alter the brain N-glycan and lipid profile in male Golden Syrian hamsters and to evaluate the potential of a Mediterranean-like diet to reverse this situation. During twelve weeks, hamsters were fed a normal fat diet (CTRL group), a high-fat diet (HFD group), and a high-fat diet followed by a Mediterranean-like diet (MED group). Out of seventy-two identified N-glycans, fourteen were significant (p < 0.05) between HFD and CTRL groups, nine between MED and CTRL groups, and one between MED and HFD groups. Moreover, forty-nine lipids were altered between HFD and CTRL groups, seven between MED and CTRL groups, and five between MED and HFD groups. Our results suggest that brain N-glycan composition in high-fat diet-fed hamsters can produce events comparable to those found in some neurodegenerative diseases, and may promote brain ageing.

A plant’s stress response involves the production of phytochemicals, including phenolic compounds. Their synthesis can be modulated by organic (ORG) or non-organic (NORG) farming systems in which they are grown. To examine this issue, thirteen plant-based foods cultivated in ORG and NORG systems were compared in terms of antioxidant capacity, total content of phenolics, anthocyanins, flavan-3-ols and flavonols. The results showed that NORG fruits tended to have higher phenolic compounds content, whereas ORG fruits had more antioxidant capacity. NORG legume stood out for having higher values from all the parameters analyzed in comparison to its ORG equivalent. ORG nuts showed more flavan-3-ols and flavonols than their NORG counterparts, nonetheless, tended to be less antioxidant. ORG vegetables displayed higher phenolics and anthocyanins, which reflected in higher antioxidant capacity than NORG ones. These findings suggest that farming systems differentially modulate phenolic compound composition and antioxidant capacity based on the plant species studied.

Tomatoes are widely consumed worldwide at any time of the year. However, depending on the variety, they have a characteristic season. We evaluated the consequences metabolic of consumption of Ekstasis tomatoes from different geographical origin and in different seasons in Fischer 344 rats. The hepatic gene expression of key enzymes in lipid metabolism was also evaluated. Animals were classified in three photoperiods (L6, L12, and L18) and in three treatments (vehicle: VH; local tomato: LT; and non-local tomato: nLT). We measured serum metabolic parameters and the gene expression of liver enzymes related to lipid metabolism (Acc1, Cpt1a, Had, Fas1, Srebp-1c, Fatp5, Cd36). LT consumption in season decreased cardiovascular risk 1 and coefficient atherogenic by 1.81 (p = 0.031) and in L6 decreased TAG and glucose (p = 0.046; p = 0.024). The L18-LT animals had decreased total cholesterol (p = 0.029) and gene expression of Srebp1-c (p = 0.022) but increased expression of Acc1 (p = 0.032). The treatments significantly affected the expression of Acc1 and Fas1 in the liver and the levels of serum TAG and glucose. A significant effect of photoperiod on serum concentration of glucose, insulin, HOMA index, and on the hepatic expression of Srep1-c, Fas1, and Acc1 was observed.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of long-term administration of the protein hydrolysate from chicken feet Hpp11 in diet-induced hypertensive rats. Rats were fed standard or cafeteria (CAF) diets for 12 weeks, and during the final 3 weeks, CAF animals were administered vehicle, Captopril or Hpp11. Systolic blood pressure (SBP) was recorded weekly. Body weight and plasmatic lipid and glucose levels were determined. Moreover, liver-reduced glutathione (GSH) levels, plasmatic angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) activity and the endothelial gene expression of eNOS, KLF-2, Sirt-1, NOX4 and ET-1 were studied. A definite decrease in SBP was recorded in the rats that were administered Hpp11. Hpp11 downregulated gene expression of the vasoconstrictor ET-1 and induced the upregulation of NOX4 and NO enhancer Sirt-1, suggesting the vasoprotective effect of Hpp11. Moreover, Hp11 increased hepatic GSH. The present findings suggest that Hpp11 is a good candidate to ameliorate diet-induced hypertension.

Cerenkov Emission (CE) during external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) from a linear accelerator (Linac) has been demonstrated as a useful tool for radiotherapy quality assurance and potentially other applications for online tracking of tumors during treatment delivery. However, some of the current challenges that are impacting the potential of CE are related to the limited detection sensitivity and the lack of flexible tools to fit into an already complex treatment delivery environment. Silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) solid-state devices are new promising tools for low light detection due to their extreme sensitivity that mirrors photomultiplier tubes and yet have a form factor that is similar to silicon photodiodes, allowing for improved flexibility in device design that may help in the process of wider clinical applicability. In this paper, we assess the feasibility of using SiPMs to detect CE during EBRT from a Linac and contrast their performance with commercially available silicon photodiodes (PDs). We demonstrate the feasibility of the SiPM-based probes for standard dosimetry measurements. We also demonstrate that CE optical signals can be detected from tissue depths about five times greater than that for standard probes based on PDs, making our SiPM probe an enabling technology of CE measurements, particularly for deep tissue applications.

This article contains data related to the research article entitled “An Investigation of Organic Matter Quality and Quantity in Acid Soils as Influenced by Soil Type and Land Use” (Shen et al., 2018) [1]. The data was collected using a chemical fractionation scheme of soil organic matter (OM). This involved the separation of organic carbon (OC) fractions based on their solubility in (i) cold and hot water, (ii) 0.1 M sodium pyrophosphate (pH ~ 10), and (iii) 2% HF solution, and the residue remaining after the HF extraction. The OM in this residue, after treatment with 2% HF solution, was characterised using pyrolysis (Py)-GC/MS. This technique involves thermal decomposition of OM into various pyrolysis products, which are then chromatographically separated and determined by mass spectroscopy. This technique has been used to semi-quantify individual soil OM constituents so that in-depth information on soil OM molecular fingerprints is provided. This article presents a detailed dataset of physical-chemical characterization, OC fractions and OM molecular fingerprints of 62 soil samples for a range of soil orders (i.e., Allophanic, Brown, Gley, Pallic and Recent) and land uses (i.e., permanently grazed pasture, ungrazed/unmanaged grasslands, annual cropping) across New Zealand. Principal component analysis was used to investigate the relationships of different soil properties with OC fractions and OM chemistry so that the underlying mechanisms responsible for the differences encountered in OM quantity and quality between soil orders and land uses are understood.

Variations in the light/dark cycle and obesogenic diets trigger physiological and behavioral disorders. Proanthocyanidins, in addition to their healthy properties, have recently demonstrated a modulating effect on biological rhythms. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the administration of a grape seed proanthocyanidin-rich extract (GSPE) to mitigate the disruption caused by a sudden photoperiod change in healthy and cafeteria (CAF)-diet obese rats. For this, 48 photoperiod-sensitive Fischer 344 rats were fed standard or CAF diets for 6 weeks under a standard (12 h light/day, L12) conditions. Then, rats were switched to a long (18 h light/day, L18) or short (6 h light/day, L6) photoperiod and administered vehicle or GSPE (25 mg/kg) for 1 week. Body weight (BW) and food intake (FI) were recorded weekly. Animal activity and serum hormone concentrations were studied before and after the photoperiod change. Hormone levels were measured both at 3 h (ZT3) and 15 h (ZT15) after the onset of light. Results showed the impact of the CAF diet and photoperiod on the BW, FI, activity, and hormonal status of the animals. GSPE administration resulted in an attenuation of the changes produced by the photoperiod disruption. Specifically, GSPE in L6 CAF-fed rats reduced serum corticosterone concentration, restoring its circadian rhythm, increased the T3-to-T4 ratio, and increased light phase activity, while under L18, it decreased BW and testosterone concentration and increased the animal activity. These results suggest that GSPE may contribute to the adaptation to the new photoperiods. However, further studies are needed to elucidate the metabolic pathways and processes involved in these events.

The phytochemical composition of fruits, especially polyphenols, depends on the environmental conditions under which these fruits are cultivated and the agronomic practices followed. Therefore, the consumption of fruits from different origins, with different polyphenol signatures, could have differential effects on health. In addition, recent studies have shown that variation in the biological rhythms due to changes in the photoperiod in the different seasons differentially affect the metabolism in animal models, thus conditioning their response to food consumption. Considering all, this article evaluates the effects of consumption of sweet cherry from different sources, local (LC) and non-local (nLC), on plasma metabolic parameters and the gene expression of key enzymes of lipid metabolism in Fischer 344 rats under photoperiods simulating different seasons. Animals were classified into three photoperiods (L6, L12 and L18) and three treatments (LC, nLC and VH). Both the photoperiod and the treatments significantly affected the evaluated parameters. An effect of the photoperiod on triacylglycerides, non-esterified fatty acids and the mRNA concentration of crucial enzymes from the hepatic lipid metabolism was observed. Furthermore, the consumption of fruit in L12 lowered blood glucose, while the different treatments affected the hepatic expression of genes related with lipidic enzymes.

Ageing is a complex process which implies the accumulation of molecular, cellular and organ damage, leading to an increased vulnerability to disease. In Western societies, the increase in the elderly population, which is accompanied by ageing-associated pathologies such as cardiovascular and mental diseases, is becoming an increasing economic and social burden for governments. In order to prevent, treat and determine which subjects are more likely to develop these age-related diseases, predictive biomarkers are required. In this sense, some studies suggest that glycans have a potential role as disease biomarkers, as they modify the functions of proteins and take part in intra- and intercellular biological processes. As the glycome reflects the real-time status of these interactions, its characterisation can provide potential diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers for multifactorial diseases. This review gathers the alterations in protein glycosylation profiles that are associated with ageing and age-related diseases, such as cancer, type 2 diabetes mellitus, metabolic syndrome and several chronic inflammatory diseases. Furthermore, the review includes the available techniques for the determination and characterisation of glycans, such as liquid chromatography, electrophoresis, nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectrometry.

La educación médica ha incorporado un componente psiquiátrico, o de salud mental, de manera más consistente en el curso de las últimas décadas, merced a factores tan variados como los avances de la investigación neurobiológica, la creciente prevalencia de trastornos mentales en el escenario de la salud global, la cada vez más estrecha relación entre salud mental y salud pública, comorbilidades con cuadros médicos e impacto de fenómenos socioculturales en expresiones clínicas, diagnóstico, tratamiento, pronóstico y prevención. Basado en la adquisición de competencias nucleares y principios éticos de aceptación universal, el proceso docente examinado en este artículo postula una enseñanza sustentada en la provisión de experiencias clínicas integradas a través del acopio de información adecuada, el desarrollo de capacidades diagnósticas y sujeción a una amplia variedad de modalidades de evaluación académica de estudiantes y residentes en entrenamiento. Los componentes culturales de la educación psiquiátrica reciben mención especial, proveyéndose ejemplos de su sistemática integración con la adquisición de competencias generales. Las herramientas didácticas incluyen actividades teóricas, prácticas y de supervisión. Se presta particular atención a cómo los postulados de la moderna educación médico psiquiátrica, incluidos sus aspectos culturales y la práctica de una atención médica integral como objetivos, pueden y deben tener vigencia en los países latinoamericanos.

La mina de La Profunda, en Leon, hace decenios que se reconoce como un espacio minero prehistorico genericamente atribuido a la Edad del Bronce merced a la aparicion de varias hachas de cobre (nunca debidamente descritas y hoy desaparecidas), una extrana pieza del mismo metal y los caracteristicos, aunque cronoculturalmente ambiguos, percutores elaborados con cantos rodados. La localizacion reciente de utiles en materia animal (en asta y tibia de Cervus elaphus, ademas de un cuerno de Capra hircus) procedentes de la mina permite no solo el conocimiento de una modalidad instrumental bien documentada en las expresivas minas de cobre de la cercana Asturias (labores prehistoricas del Aramo y El Milagro) sino tambien la datacion radiocarbonica que situa los trabajos extractivos de La Profunda ya en la segunda mitad del milenio III a.C. La alta rentabilidad de aquel venero de cobre hubo de proporcionar mineral y metal a sociedades de un ambito bastante mayor que el correspondiente al sector montanoso donde las minas se abren, alcanzando a las comunidades aldeanas de la Edad del Cobre (el llamado “Horizonte las Pozas”) en las tierras sedimentarias de la meseta septentrional de Castilla, y tambien, probablemente, a las autoras de los poblados amurallados por entonces existentes en el sector sudoeste de la dilatada cuenca hidrografica del Duero.

Medical education has incorporated psychiatric or mental health components more consistently during the last decades thanks to various factors such as: advances in neurobiological research; the increasing prevalence of mental disorders in global health; the increasingly close relationship between mental health and public health; comorbidities with medical conditions and the impact of sociocultural phenomena in clinical manifestations, diagnosis, treatment, prognosis and prevention. Based on acquisition of core competencies and ethical principles of universal acceptance, the teaching process examined in this article proposes an education based on the provision of clinical experiences integrated throughout the collection of adequate information, the development of diagnostic capabilities, and exposure to a wide variety of forms of academic assessment of students and residents in training. The cultural components of psychiatric education receive special mention; we provide examples of their systematic integration with the acquisition of general skills. The teaching tools include theoretical and applied activities and supervision. Particular attention is paid to how the principles of modern psychiatric medical education, including cultural aspects and practice of holistic health care objectives, can and should be in effect in Latin American countries.

Lymphomatoid Papulosis (LyP) is a rare disorder characterized by a self-healing eruption of papules and small nodules with histopathologic features mimicking a cutaneous T-cell lymphoma CD 30+. We report a 15-year-old girl with CD8+ T-cells, an unusual phenotype in this disease. The clinical and pathological differential diagnoses are discussed.

Abstract Seasonal rhythms are gaining attention given their impact on metabolic disorders development such as obesity gut microbiota is emerging as a key factor in mediating this link. However, the underlying mechanisms are still poorly understood. In this regard, corticosterone may play a role as it has been shown to be affected by gut bacteria and seasonal rhythms, and has been linked to obesity. Thus, this study aimed to investigate if seasonal rhythms effects on corticosterone are influenced by gut microbiota in obese rats and whether this may be related to seasonal and clock genes expression in the pituitary gland and colon. Fischer 344 male rats fed with cafeteria diet (CAF) were housed under different photoperiods for 9 weeks and treated with an antibiotic cocktail (ABX) in drinking water during the last 4 weeks. Rats fed with standard chow and CAF-fed rats without ABX were included as controls. ABX altered gut microbiota, corticosterone levels and seasonal clock expression in the pituitary depending on photoperiod conditions. These results suggest a link between gut bacteria, seasonal rhythms and corticosterone and a novel nutrigenomic target for obesity.

Abstract Background Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 inhibitors (PCSK9i) have represented an important change in the management of hypercholesterolemia, although, until now, they have barely been used. Without PCSK9i, many patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (CVD) or those at very high risk do not reach their therapeutic LDLc objectives. Objective The analysis aimed to examine the clinical and biochemical characteristics of subjects receiving PCSK9i treatment in the Dyslipidemia Registry of the Spanish Atherosclerosis Society. Methods All consecutive subjects aged ≥ 18 years from different Lipid Units included in the Dyslipidemia Registry of the SEA were analyzed. Inclusion criteria consisted of unrelated patients aged ≥ 18 at the time of inclusion with hypercholesterolemia (LDL-C ≥ 130 mg/dL or non-HDL-C ≥ 160 mg/dL after the exclusion of secondary causes) who were studied for at least two years after inclusion. Participants’ baseline and final visit clinical and biochemical characteristics were analyzed based on whether they were on primary or secondary prevention and whether they were taking PCSK9i at the end of follow-up. Results Eight hundred twenty-nine patients were analyzed, 7014 patients in primary prevention and 1281 in secondary prevention at baseline. 4127 subjects completed the required follow-up for the final analysis. The median follow-up duration was 7 years (IQR 3.0–10.0). Five hundred patients (12.1%) were taking PCSK9i at the end of the follow-up. The percentage of PCSK9i use reached 35.6% (n = 201) and 8.7% (n = 318) in subjects with and without CVD, respectively. Subjects on PCSK9i and oral lipid-lowering agents with and without CVD achieved LDLc reductions of 80.3% and 75.1%, respectively, concerning concentrations without lipid-lowering drugs. Factors associated with PCSK9i use included increasing age, LDLc without lipid-lowering drugs and the Dutch Lipid Clinic Network (DLCN) score. However, hypertension, diabetes, smoking, and LDLc after oral lipid-lowering drugs were not independent factors associated with PCSK9i prescription. In subjects with CVD, the use of PCSK9i was higher in men than in women (an odds ratio of 1.613, P = 0.048). Conclusions Approximately one-third of CVD patients received PCSK9i at the end of follow-up. The use of PCSK9i was more focused on baseline LDLc concentrations rather than on CVD risk. Women received less PCSK9i in secondary prevention compared to men.
