Abstract

Traditional medicine in Latin America and mainly in Mexico represents an essential alternative for treating different diseases. The use of plants as medicine is the product of a rich cultural tradition of the indigenous peoples, in which a great variety of species are used for the treatment of gastrointestinal, respiratory, and mental diseases and some other sicknesses; the therapeutic efficacy that they possess is due to the properties that derive from the active ingredients of plants principally antioxidants, such as phenolic compounds, flavonoids, terpenes, and tannins. An antioxidant is a substance that, at low concentrations, delays or prevents substrate oxidation through the exchange of electrons. Different methods are used to determine the antioxidant activity and the most commonly used are described in the review. Cancer is a disease in which some cells multiply uncontrollably and spread to other parts of the body, a process known as metastasis. These cells can lead to the formation of tumors, which are lumps of tissue that can be cancerous (malignant) or noncancerous (benign). Generally, the treatment of this disease consists of surgery, radiotherapy, or chemotherapy, which have side effects that decrease the quality of life of patients, so new treatments, focusing on natural resources such as plants, can be developed. This review aims to gather scientific evidence on the antioxidant compounds present in plants used in traditional Mexican medicine, specifically as antitumor treatment in the most common cancer types worldwide (e.g., breast, liver, and colorectal cancer). Abstract

The encapsulation of magnetic nickel nanowires (NiNWs) with gelatin is proposed as an alternative for optical label detection. Magnetic nanowires can be detected at very low concentrations using light-scattering methods. This detection capacity could be helpful in applications such as transducers for molecular and biomolecular sensors; however, potential applications require the attachment of specific binding molecules to the nanowire structure. In the present study, a method is presented which is helpful in coating magnetic nanowires with gelatin, a material with the potential to handle specific decoration and functionalization of the nanowires; in the first case, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are efficiently used to decorate the nanowires. Furthermore, it is shown that the synthesized gelatin-coated particles have excellent detectability to the level of 140 pg/mL; this level of detection outperforms more complex techniques such as ICP-OES (~3 ng/mL for Ni) and magnetoresistance sensing (~10 ng/mL for magnetic nanoparticles). 32. Coatings with embedded particles to increase interfacial anchorage of steel and GFRP rebars in concrete

Abstract

Three different types of coatings were studied for protecting rebars against corrosion: sol-gel silica, organic polymer (bisphenol A-fumarate), and organic-inorganic hybrid nanometric compound. This work proposes the addition of particles of about 5 mm in size, heterogeneously distributed, such as recycled glass or sand on the coatings to gain mechanical anchorage between the coated steel rebars and the concrete. This surface change was tested in rebars of fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) with fiberglass. The result was that this factor increased the force required for the extraction of the rebars. The low thickness of sol-gel SiO2 coatings made with TEOS was unsuitable for this application. The coatings with polymeric resin offered protection against corrosion in an economical and straightforward form. The organic-inorganic hybrid coatings, using silane coupling agents, provide coatings with adequate protection but depending on the preparation process and a cost increase regarding to the polymeric resin.

Abstract

Transparent conducting electrodes (TCE) are extensively applied in a great range of optoelectronic and photovoltaic equipment (e.g., solar cells, touch panels, and flexible devices). Carbon-based nanomaterials are considered as suitable replacements to substitute traditional materials to manufacture TCE due to their remarkable characteristics, for example, high optical transmittance and outstanding electrical properties. In comparison with traditional indium tin oxide electrodes, carbon-based electrodes show good mechanical properties, chemical stability, and low cost. Nevertheless, major issues related to the development of good quality manufacture methods to produce carbon-based nanomaterials have to be overcome to meet massive market requirements. Hence, the development of alternative TCE materials as well as appropriate large production techniques that meet the requirements of a proper sheet resistance along with a high optical transparency is a priority. Therefore, in this work, we summarize and discuss novel production and synthesis methods, chemical treatments, and hybrid materials developed to satisfy the worldwide request for carbon-based nanomaterials.

Graphene, a material composed of one-atom-thick planar sheets of sp2-bonded carbon atoms with a two-dimensional honeycomb structure, has been proposed for many applications due to its remarkable electronic, optical, thermal, and mechanical properties. Its high transparency, conductivity, flexibility, and abundance make it an excellent material to be applied in the field of organic photovoltaic cells, especially as a replacement for transparent conducting oxide electrodes. However, graphene has been demonstrated to be useful not only as substitute for indium tin oxide electrodes, but also as cathode, electron acceptor, hole transport, and electron extraction material. Thus, in this work, we summarize and discuss the efficiency of bulk heterojunction devices using graphene as a main constituent.

Abstract

In this work, the development of a composite material with geopolymer and a high content of rice husks without heat treatment was investigated to create and characterize a low-cost composite made with agro-industrial wastes. The ratio used was about 12/88 wt./% of sol–gel and metakaolin related to rice husks. This kind of composite geopolymer was designed as both a construction material for load or aesthetic finishing. X-ray diffraction studies reveal that the composite has an amorphous phase and a crystalline one, which is typical of geopolymeric materials. The scanning electron microscopy showed that the geopolymeric matrix completely wrapped the rice husks. The composite material has a compressive strength close to some mortars with a value of about 110 kg/cm2 (10.8 MPa). Laser scanning confocal microscopy reveals that there is a difference of emission in the visible spectrum between the inner and outer sides of the rice husks, which corroborates that they have a different chemical composition. Differential scanning calorimetry analysis confirmed that the composite material has combined characteristics of its raw materials. X-ray diffraction studies show that metakaolin with sol–gel solutions had temperature-dependent interactions besides that, after the dehydroxylation, the composite material is mostly amorphous.
