Abstract Purpose To investigate whether the mixed approach is a safe and advantageous way to operate laparoscopic right hemicolectomy. Methods A retrospective study was performed on 316 patients who underwent laparoscopic right hemicolectomy in our center. They were assigned to the middle approach group (n = 158) and the mixed approach group (n = 158) according to the surgical approaches. The baseline data like gender、age and body mass index as well as the intraoperative and postoperative conditions including operation time, blood loss, postoperative hospital stay and complications were analyzed. Results There were no significant differences in age, sex, BMI, ASA grade and tumor characteristics between the two groups. Abstract Background Human brucellosis has become one of the major public health problems in China, and increases atypical manifestations, such as fever of unknown origin (FUO), and misdiagnosis rates has complicated the diagnosis of brucellosis. To date, no relevant study on the relationship between brucellosis and FUO has been conducted. Methods We retrospectively reviewed the medical charts of 35 patients with confirmed human brucellosis and prospectively recorded their outcomes by telephone interview. BackgroundFOSB is reported to be an oncogene in a variety of tumors. However, the expression and role of FOSB in glioma remain obscure. In this study, we aimed to explore the expression of FOSB in glioma and its biological role in glioblastoma multiforme (GBM).MethodsWestern blot, immunohistochemical staining, and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) were used to detect the expression of FOSB in clinical samples. FOSB was knocked down in cells to determine the effects of FOSB on the phenotypic changes of tumors by plate cloning, CCK-8 assay, and Transwell assay. Finally, subcutaneous tumorigenesis in nude mice was used to observe the tumorigenesis of glioma cell lines after the knockdown of the FOSB gene.ResultsFOSB expression was higher in glioma compared with normal brain tissue. After the downregulation of FOSB, the expression of cleaved caspase-3 increased. Plate cloning and CCK-8 experiments showed that the proliferation of glioma cell lines decreased. The Transwell assay demonstrated that the glioblastoma cell lines had lower migration ability after the knockdown of FOSB. Finally, the tumor volume of U87 glioma cells in group sh-FOSB was smaller than that in the control group. The TUNEL staining in vitro showed that the apoptosis of sh-FOSB glioma cells increased.ConclusionFOSB was highly expressed in glioma tissues. The viability of glioma cells decreased, and the ability of glioma cells to proliferate and migrate was reduced when FOSB was downregulated. Hence, FOSB may promote the development and migration of gliomas.

Abstract. Amoxicillin is widely used by the Chinese population and available in pharmacies without prescription. We performed a retrospective study on patients with fever who took amoxicillin before going to the fever clinic of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University from March 1, 2020 to March 31, 2021. Among the total of 9093 patients attending the fever clinic, 446 patients had a history of taking amoxicillin, from which 100 cases were randomly selected to evaluate the therapeutic effects of non-prescribed amoxicillin by changes in clinical symptoms, counts of white blood cells, neutrophils, and lymphocytes, and levels of C-reactive protein (CRP). The control group consisted of 100 randomly selected patients for who it was verified that they did not take antibiotics before attending the fever clinic. Our study showed that there were no significant differences between the group of patients taking amoxicillin and the control group in terms of symptom improvement, white blood cell, neutrophil or lymphocyte counts, or the levels of CRP. Therefore, our study indicated that although non-prescribed amoxicillin is widely used among patients with fever, it does not provide significant beneficial therapeutic effects. There is still a long way to go to standardize the application of antibiotics and popularize knowledge on proper antibiotics use among the population.

Abstract. Background:. The neoadjuvant chemotherapy is increasingly used in advanced gastric cancer, but the effects on safety and survival are still controversial. The objective of this meta-analysis was to compare the overall survival and short-term surgical outcomes between neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by surgery (NACS) and surgery alone (SA) for locally advanced gastric cancer. Methods:. Databases (PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar) were explored for relative studies from January 2000 to January 2021. The quality of randomized controlled trials and cohort studies was evaluated using the modified Jadad scoring system and the Newcastle-Ottawa scale, respectively. The Review Manager software (version 5.3) was used to perform this meta-analysis. The overall survival was evaluated as the primary outcome, while perioperative indicators and post-operative complications were evaluated as the secondary outcomes. Results:. Twenty studies, including 1420 NACS cases and 1942 SA cases, were enrolled. The results showed that there were no significant differences in overall survival (P = 0.240), harvested lymph nodes (P = 0.200), total complications (P = 0.080), and 30-day post-operative mortality (P = 0.490) between the NACS and SA groups. Crocetin is an aglycone of crocin naturally occurring in saffron and produced in biological systems by hydrolysis of crocin as a bioactive metabolite. It is known to exist in several medicinal plants, the desiccative ripe fruit of the cape jasmine belonging to the Rubiaceae family, and stigmas of the saffron plant of the Iridaceae family. According to modern pharmacological investigations, crocetin possesses cardioprotective, hepatoprotective, neuroprotective, antidepressant, antiviral, anticancer, atherosclerotic, antidiabetic, and memory-enhancing properties. Although poor bioavailability hinders therapeutic applications, derivatization and formulation preparation technologies have broadened the application prospects for crocetin. To promote the research and development of crocetin, we summarized the distribution, preparation and production, total synthesis and derivatization technology, pharmacological activity, pharmacokinetics, drug safety, drug formulations, and preparation of crocetin.

BackgroundPostoperative colorectal anastomotic leakage (CAL) is a devastating complication following colorectal resection. However, the diagnosis of anastomotic leakage is often delayed because the current methods of identification are unable to achieve 100% clinical sensitivity and specificity. This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the predictive value of peritoneal fluid cytokines in the detection of CAL following colorectal surgery.MethodsA comprehensive search was conducted on PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science before June 2021 to retrieve studies regarding peritoneal fluid cytokines as early markers of CAL. Pooled analyses of interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, IL-10, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF) were performed. The means (MD) and standard deviations (SD) of the peritoneal fluid cytokines were extracted from the included studies. Review Manager Software 5.3 was used for data analysis.ResultsWe included eight studies with 580 patients, among which 85 (14.7%) and 522 (44.5%) were evaluated as the CAL and non-CAL groups, respectively. Compared to the non-CAL group, the CAL group had significantly higher peritoneal IL-6 levels on postoperative day (POD) 1–3 (P = 0.0006, 0.0002, and 0.002, respectively) and slightly higher TNF levels on POD 4 (P = 0.0002). Peritoneal levels of IL-1β and IL-10 were not significantly different between the two groups in this study.ConclusionPeritoneal IL-6 levels can be a diagnostic marker for CAL following colorectal surgery, whereas the value of TNF needs further exploration in the future.Systematic Review Registration[https://www.crd.york.ac.uk/prospero/#myprospero], PROSPERO (CRD42021274973)

AIM: To investigate the application of rectusmuscle transplantation optimization in the treatment of refractory supraventricular insufficiency in one eye caused by double supraventricular paralysis with inferior rectus restriction and high original vertical strabismus. METHODS: Retrospective analysis was performed on 6 cases of double superior muscle palsy admitted to our hospital from January 2015 to January 2019. After the failure of conservative treatment, rectus muscle transplantation optimization was adopted to observe the improvement of preoperative and postoperative eye position, vertical strabismus, motor function of upper and lower rotation of paralytic eye, as well as the improvement of pseudo ptosis and compensated head position. RESULTS: After the restriction was lifted, rectusmuscle transplantation optimization was performed. The original in situ vertical strabismus degree before surgery, one month and six months after surgery were(49.83 ± 6.55)PD,(2.67±2.07)PD, and(1.83±2.40)PD. There was a significant difference in vertical strabismus before and after 1mo and 6mo of operation(PP=0.899). All patients had the orthotopic position in postoperative position, and the paralysis function of the paralyzed eyes improved significantly after the operation; Pseudopterygoptosis in four cases and compensatory head position in two cases before operation were significantly improved after operation. CONCLUSION: Optimization of rectus muscle transplantation is suitable for unilateral superior rotation deficiency with limitation of inferior rectus, which can effectively improve the superior rotation function of affected eye with stable curative effect.
