This study's aim was to test associations between nutrition knowledge and obesity-related attitudes and physical activity (PA) among 3000 18–35-year-old men and women from Kenya, South Africa (SA), and the United Kingdom (UK). A cross-sectional online survey was conducted in April 2022. To estimate nutrition knowledge, dietary recommendation knowledge score was computed using the standard General Nutrition Knowledge questionnaire. Obesity-related attitudes were from the British Social Attitudes Survey. Self-reported days of vigorous and moderate PAs and walking were used. Ordinal logistic regression was employed to test all associations, while adjusting for age group, gender and a household asset score. Using simple mediation, testing was also done to ascertain whether obesity-related attitudes mediated associations between nutrition knowledge and PA. Consistently, better nutrition knowledge was associated with disagreeing that 'There is no reason to worry about obesity' (ORs ≥ 1.09), but lower odds of being against 'Providing free weight management courses' and 'Creating/improving cycle paths and pavements to encourage PA' (ORs ≤ 0.90). Better nutrition knowledge was also associated with higher vigorous PA in SA (OR = 1.09), and moderate PA (OR = 1.04) and walking (OR = 1.12) in the UK. In the combined sample, associations of nutrition knowledge with vigorous PA were fully mediated by believing that 'Obesity results from not exercising enough' (11.1% mediated). Likewise, associations of nutrition knowledge with moderate PA were fully mediated by attitude towards 'Creating or improving cycle paths and pavements to encourage PA' in the UK (38.9% mediated). Nutrition knowledge is associated with obesity-related attitudes and PA among young adults, but some relationships are country-specific. Interventions based on findings from high-income countries should be evaluated before being implemented in low-resource settings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To investigate food insecurity and related coping strategies, and their associations with the risk of anxiety and depression, among South African households with children. Design: Nationally representative cross-sectional study. Tools for assessing food insecurity, coping strategies, risk of anxiety and depression were assessed from the Community Childhood Hunger Identification Project, Coping Strategies Index, Generalised Anxiety Disorder-7 and Patient Health Questionnaire-9, respectively. We used ordered logistic regression to test associations of food insecurity and coping strategies with the risk of anxiety and depression. Moderating effects of each coping strategy were tested in the associations of food insecurity with anxiety and depression. Setting: South Africa, post COVID-19 restrictions, May–June 2022. Participants: 1,774 adults, weighted to 20,955,234 households. Results: Food insecurity prevalence was 23·7 % among households with children. All coping strategies were used to some extent, but relying on less preferred and less expensive foods was the most used strategy (85·5 % of food-insecure households). Moving to a higher level of food insecurity was associated with >1·6 greater odds of being in a higher risk of anxiety and depression. Sending a household member to beg for food was the strongest associated factor (OR = 1·7, P < 0·001). All coping strategies partly moderated (lessened) the associations of food insecurity with a higher risk of anxiety and depression. Conclusions: Food insecurity among households with children was high following the COVID-19 pandemic. Collaborative efforts between government, private sector and civil society to eradicate food insecurity should prioritise poorer households with children, as these populations are the most vulnerable. Introduction In the South African Breast Cancer and HIV Outcomes (SABCHO) study, we previously found that breast cancer patients living with HIV and treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy achieve lower rates of complete pathologic response than patients without HIV. We now assess the impact of comorbid HIV on receipt of timely and complete neoadjuvant and adjuvant chemotherapy. Materials and Methods Since June 2015, the SABCHO study has collected data on women diagnosed with breast cancer at 6 South African hospitals. We selected a sample of participants with stages I-III cancer who received ≥2 doses of neoadjuvant or adjuvant chemotherapy. Data on chemotherapies prescribed and received, filgrastim receipt, and laboratory values measured during treatment were captured from patients' medical records. We calculated the mean relative dose intensity (RDI) for all prescribed chemotherapies. We tested for association between full regimen RDI and HIV status, using linear regression to control for demographic and clinical covariates, and for association of HIV with laboratory abnormalities. Results The 166 participants living with HIV and 159 without HIV did not differ in median chemotherapy RDI: 0.89 (interquartile range (IQR) 0.77-0.95) among those living with HIV and 0.87 (IQR 0.77-0.94) among women without HIV. Patients living with HIV experienced more grade 3+ anemia and leukopenia than those without HIV (anemia: 10.8% vs. 1.9%, P =.001; leukopenia: 8.4% vs. 1.9%, P =.008) and were more likely to receive filgrastim (24.7% vs. 10.7%, P =.001). Conclusions HIV status did not impact neoadjuvant or adjuvant chemotherapy RDI, although patients with breast cancer living with HIV experienced more myelotoxicity during treatment. There is a rising noncommunicable disease (NCD) burden in low- and middle-income countries. Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) bears a higher burden than the global average with South Africa (SA) enduring the highest regional burden. SA among other southern African countries also bears a high prevalence of HIV and other chronic communicable diseases. Having a perspective on common chronic diseases in the ever-increasing numbers of adult cancer patients in SA will inform our understanding of approaches to better manage them. This commentary reviews regional and national studies and data of low- and middle-income countries and particularly SA on the chronic infectious and NCD multimorbidity burden among adult cancer patients. It also reflects on the considerable health system challenges of managing discordant multimorbidity among adult cancer patients within the SA Public Health System. Despite the critical need to better manage the growing MM burden in general and particularly the high prevalence of discordant multimorbidity among cancer patients, there is a dearth of research into MM management generally and in LMICs particularly. In the Fourth Industrial Revolution, academics should enhance entrepreneurial capacity to leverage digital-based advances and knowledge capital to support academic economic growth. A scoping review based on the Joanna Briggs Institute's guiding principles, using Krueger's intention-based entrepreneurship model as the theoretical framework, was undertaken to determine the extent of the literature related to characteristics, attributes, behaviours, enablers, and barriers of academic entrepreneurship in Higher Education Institutions in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). Twenty articles were identified and included. The most common academic entrepreneurial characteristics included hunger for success, desire for independence, innovation, creativity, futuristic thinking, and self-esteem. For entrepreneurship to flourish, donor support, strong regulatory systems, political and macroeconomic stability were necessary. Characteristics such as innovation, creativity and futuristic thinking were tied to academic entrepreneurship. Further research on enablers and barriers is suggested to guide academics in LMIC universities with their transition to entrepreneurship as their engagement with society develops.
