The 1 H, 13 C, 15 N, and 19 F nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra of 11 2,5-diaryl-2,4-dihydro-3H-1,2,4-triazol-3-ones have been acquired in DMSO-d 6 solution and the 13 C, 15 N, and 19 F NMR spectra have also been acquired in the solid state (solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance [SSNMR] and magic angle spinning [MAS]). The X-ray structures of Compounds 3, 5, and 6 have been determined by X-ray diffraction. Theoretical calculations at the gauge-independent atomic orbital (GIAO)/B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) level have provided a set of 321 chemical shifts that were compared with 310 experimental values in DMSO-d 6 . To obtain good agreements, some effects need to be included. Theoretical simulation of NMR parameters in compounds bearing heavy atoms generally requires the application of relativistic corrections. We report herein the theoretical characterization of 13 C and 15 N CPMAS NMR of known bromo-derivative crystals by using both the GIPAW and the combined GIAO-ZORA-SO approximation methods. Several statistical analyses were performed to compare both approaches, with non-relativistic GIPAW method being more useful to predict the 13 C and 15 N chemical shifts. The first general regio- and stereoselective 5-exo gold(I)-catalyzed alkoxycyclization of a specific class of 1,5-enynes such as 1,3-dien-5-ynes has been described, despite 1,5-enynes being known to almost invariably proceed via endo cyclizations under gold-catalysis. The configuration of the terminal alkene in the starting 1,3-dien-5-yne plays a crucial role on the regiochemical outcome of the reaction. A wide variety of interesting alkoxy-functionalized alkylidenecyclopentenes have been synthesized from 1-monosubstituted (E)-1,3-dien-5-ynes. On the contrary, the corresponding Z isomers evolve affording formal 6-endo cyclization products. In addition, mechanistic exploration supports a highly stabilized carbocation as a key intermediate instead of a highly constrained cyclopropyl gold carbene from E isomers, and also accounts for the well differentiated reactivity observed between both E/Z geometrical isomers as well as for the stereochemical outcome of the reaction., (© 2020 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Azoles are a family of five-membered azacyclic compounds with relevant biological and pharmacological activity. Different subclasses of azoles are defined depending on the atomic arrangement and the number of nitrogen atoms present in the ring: pyrazoles, indazoles, imidazoles, benzimidazoles, triazoles, benzotriazoles, tetrazoles and pentazoles. The complete characterization of their structure and the knowledge about their crystal packing and physical and chemical properties are of vital importance for the advancement in the design of new azole-containing drugs. The stereospecific gold(i)-catalyzed nucleophilic cyclization of β-monosubstituted o-(alkynyl)styrenes to produce C-1 functionalized 1H-indenes including challenging substrates and nucleophiles, such as β-(cyclo)alkyl-substituted o-(alkynyl)styrenes and a variety of alcohols as well as selected electron-rich aromatics, is reported. DFT calculations support the stereochemical outcome of the process that involves the formation of a key cyclopropyl gold carbene intermediate through a regiospecific 5-endo cyclization.

The site-selective thio-allylation of electron-deficient 1,2-dienes is documented under scandium catalysis. The methodology enables the realization of α-β unsaturated, β-thio, γ-allyl carboxylic acid derivatives via a one-pot Lewis acid promoted Michael addition/[3,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement sequence (20 examples) in high yields (up to 95%). Full rationalization of the reaction mechanism and stereochemical outcome is provided via DFT simulations.

The NMR chemical shifts of two azoles and one benzazole whose crystal structures present polymorphism have been computed using the GIPAW approach. 15 N and 13 C nuclei have been studied. Statistical analysis of the computed 13 C and 15 N chemical shifts indicates that the GIPAW chemical shifts reproduce with a high degree of accuracy those experimentally reported. Gold is currently one of the most used metals in organometallic catalysis. The ability of gold to activate unsaturated groups in different modes, together with its tolerance to a wide range of functional groups and reaction conditions, turns gold-based complexes into efficient and highly sought after catalysts. Natural products and relevant compounds with biological and pharmaceutical activity are often characterized by complex molecular structures. (Cyclo)isomerization reactions are often a useful strategy for the generation of this molecular complexity from synthetically accessible reactants. In this review, we collect the most recent contributions in which gold(I)- and/or gold(III)-catalysts mediate intramolecular (cyclo)isomerization transformations of unsaturated species, which commonly feature allene or alkyne motifs, and organize them depending on the substrate and the reaction type.

Oxygen atom transfer reactions are receiving increasing attention because they bring about paramount transformations in the current biomass processing industry. Significant efforts have therefore been made lately in the development of efficient and scalable methods to deoxygenate organic compounds. One recent alternative involves the modification of the Cadogan reaction in which a Mo(VI) core catalyzes the reduction of o -nitrostyrene derivatives to indoles in the presence of PPh 3 . We have used density functional theory calculations to perform a comprehensive mechanistic study on this transformation, in which we find two clearly defined stages: an associative path from the nitro to the nitroso compound, characterized by the reduction of the catalyst in the first step, and a peculiar mechanism involving oxazaphosphiridine and nitrene intermediates leading to an indole product, where the metal catalyst does not participate., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest.

This paper compares the absolute shieldings obtained by gauge-including-projected-augmented-wave (GIPAW) to those obtained by gauge-invariant atomic orbital/Becke, 3-parameter, Lee-Yang-Parr (GIAO/B3LYP)/6-311++G(d,p)-polarizable continuum model (PCM, dimethyl sulfoxide) for nine benzazoles (benzimidazoles, indazoles, and benzotriazoles) recorded in the solid-state. Density functional theory is applied to the study of the oxygen atom transfer reaction from sulfoxide (DMSO) to phosphine (PMe 3 ) catalyzed by the [MoO 2 ] 2+ active core. In this work, two fundamentally different roles are explored for this dioxometal complex in the first step of the catalytic cycle: as an oxidizing agent and as a Lewis acid. The latter turns out to be the favored pathway for the oxygen atom transfer. This finding may have more general implications for similar reactions catalyzed by the same [MoO 2 ] 2+ core.

The capacity of corannulene and its benzo-derivatives CxH10 (x = 20-60) as prototypes of non-planar π-aromatic systems which mimic the end of carbon nanotubes to act as insulators between BeH2 and Cl(-) chemical entities has been explored by means of M06-2x/cc-pVDZ and M06-2x/6-311+G(d) calculations. For the sake of completeness, the set investigated includes also fullerene, C60. All these aromatic derivatives lead to stable binary complexes either with BeH2 or halogen (Cl(-)) anions. For BeH2, however, only the complexes in which the interaction involves the convex face of the aromatic system are stable. No significant changes are observed when the binding energies (BEs) of the BeH2 complexes are compared to those involving planar aromatic compounds, but the ones involving Cl(-) with the concave face of the aromatic moiety can be very large, because its curvature favors many contacts of the anion with the carbon atoms of the π-aromatic system. The formation of these binary complexes changes to a large extent the electrostatic potential on the free face of the aromatic system leading to a mutual reinforcement of both interactions, the beryllium bond and the interaction with Cl(-), when the ternary complexes are formed. As a result, the BEs for the triads are larger than the sum of the BEs of the corresponding binary complexes and the distances between the aromatic subunit and BeH2 or Cl(-) become shorter in the triads than in the binary complexes. A MBIE analysis also indicates that the enhanced stability of ternary complexes arises mainly from the reinforcement of the beryllium bonds as well as from the three-body terms. An exploration of all the minima for BeH2:C60H10:Cl(-) shows that BeH2 binds preferentially to the peripheral aromatic rings than those in the more curved region.

A theoretical study of the cooperativity in linear chains of (H3SiCN)n and (H3SiNC)n complexes connected by tetrel bonds has been carried out by means of MP2 and CCSD(T) computational methods. In all cases, a favorable cooperativity is observed, especially in some of the largest linear chains of (H3SiNC)n, where the effect is so large that the SiH3 group is almost equidistant to the two surrounding CN groups and it becomes planar. In addition, the combination of tetrel bonds with other weak interactions (halogen, chalcogen, pnicogen, triel, beryllium, lithium, and hydrogen bond) has been explored using ternary complexes, (H3SiCN)2:XY and (H3SiNC)2:XY. In all cases, positive cooperativity is obtained, especially in the (H3SiNC)2:ClF and (H3SiNC)2:SHF ternary complexes, where, respectively, halogen and chalcogen shared complexes are formed.

The possibility of forming stable BeR2 :ArH:Y(-) (R=H, F, Cl; ArH=naphthalene, pyrene; Y=Cl, Br) ternary complexes in which the beryllium compounds and anions are located on the opposite sides of an extended aromatic system is explored by means of MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ ab initio calculations. Comparison of the electron-density distribution of these ternary complexes with the corresponding BeR2 :ArH and ArH:Y(-) binary complexes reveals the existence of significant cooperativity between the two noncovalent interactions in the triads. The energetic effects of this cooperativity are quantified by evaluation of the three-body interaction energy Δ(3) E in the framework of the many-body interaction-energy (MBIE) approach. Although an essential component of the interaction energies is electrostatic and is well reflected in the changes in the molecular electrostatic potential of the aromatic system on complexation, strong polarization effects, in particular for the BeR2 :ArH interactions, also play a significant role. The charge transfers associated with these polarization effects are responsible for significant distortion of both the BeR2 and the aromatic moieties. A theoretical study of the beryllium bonds in BeR2:C6X6 (R = H, F, Cl and X = H and F) has been carried out by means of MP2/aug'-cc-pVDZ computational methods. In addition, the ternary complexes BeR2:C6X6:Y- (Y = Cl and Br) have been analyzed. Geometric, energetic and electronic aspects of the complexes have been taken into account. All the parameters analyzed provide a clear indication of favorable cooperativity in both interactions observed, beryllium bond and aromatic ring:anion interaction.
