IntroductionFor radiotherapy based solely on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), generating synthetic computed tomography scans (sCT) from MRI is essential for dose calculation. The use of deep learning (DL) methods to generate sCT from MRI has shown encouraging results if the MRI images used for training the deep learning network and the MRI images for sCT generation come from the same MRI device. The objective of this study was to create and evaluate a generic DL model capable of generating sCTs from various MRI devices for prostate radiotherapyMaterials and methodsIn total, 90 patients from three centers (30 CT-MR prostate pairs/center) underwent treatment using volumetric modulated arc therapy for prostate cancer (PCa) (60 Gy in 20 fractions). T2 MRI images were acquired in addition to computed tomography (CT) images for treatment planning. The DL model was a 2D supervised conditional generative adversarial network (Pix2Pix). Patient images underwent preprocessing steps, including nonrigid registration. Seven different supervised models were trained, incorporating patients from one, two, or three centers. Each model was trained on 24 CT-MR prostate pairs. A generic model was trained using patients from all three centers. To compare sCT and CT, the mean absolute error in Hounsfield units was calculated for the entire pelvis, prostate, bladder, rectum, and bones. For dose analysis, mean dose differences of D99% for CTV, V95% for PTV, Dmax for rectum and bladder, and 3D gamma analysis (local, 1%/1 mm) were calculated from CT and sCT. Furthermore, Wilcoxon tests were performed to compare the image and dose results obtained with the generic model to those with the other trained models.ResultsConsidering the image results for the entire pelvis, when the data used for the test comes from the same center as the data used for training, the results were not significantly different from the generic model. Absolute dose differences were less than 1 Gy for the CTV D99% for every trained model and center. The gamma analysis results showed nonsignificant differences between the generic and monocentric models.ConclusionThe accuracy of sCT, in terms of image and dose, is equivalent to whether MRI images are generated using the generic model or the monocentric model. The generic model, using only eight MRI-CT pairs per center, offers robust sCT generation, facilitating PCa MRI-only radiotherapy for routine clinical use.

As we enter the Anthropocene, the relationship of societies to themselves cannot be understood without including their relationship to nature. We need to rethink our societies and social change in terms of the relationship of human communities with other-than-human (OTH). To this end, we propose that a geography of relationality with OTH should emerge, and how this geography can serve projects of urban territorial solidarity. This relationality is constructed in three spatial dimensions, that of exposure and precarity, that of infrastructures and coexistence and finally that of assemblies and assemblages, the latter covering the field of governance. The urban environment thus acquires a heuristic value from this point of view. For working on relational quality objectives in the city implies raising the hope of changing mentalities by reinjecting meaning into the community, providing a framework and making a pluralist value judgement. We are beings in our own right, whether we are humans, animals or plants, first of all because we are in relationship.

MR-Linac is a recent device combining a linear accelerator with an MRI scanner. The improved soft tissue contrast of MR images is used for optimum delineation of tumors or organs at risk (OARs) and precise treatment delivery. Automatic segmentation of OARs can contribute to alleviating the time-consuming process for radiation oncologists and improving the accuracy of radiation delivery by providing faster, more consistent, and more accurate delineation of target structures and organs at risk. It can also help reduce inter-observer variability and improve the consistency of contouring while reducing the time required for treatment planning. In this work, state-of-the-art deep learning techniques were evaluated based on 2D and 2.5D training strategies to develop a comprehensive tool for the accurate segmentation of pelvic OARs dedicated to 0.35 T MR-Linac. In total, 103 cases with 0.35 T MR images of the pelvic region were investigated. Experts considered and contoured the bladder, rectum, and femoral heads as OARs and the prostate as the target volume. For the training of the neural network, 85 patients were randomly selected, and 18 were used for testing. Multiple U-Net-based architectures were considered, and the best model was compared using both 2D and 2.5D training strategies. The evaluation of the models was performed based on two metrics: the Dice similarity coefficient (DSC) and the Hausdorff distance (HD). In the 2D training strategy, Residual Attention U-Net (ResAttU-Net) had the highest scores among the other deep neural networks. Due to the additional contextual information, the configured 2.5D ResAttU-Net performed better. The overall DSC were 0.88 ± 0.09 and 0.86 ± 0.10, and the overall HD was 1.78 ± 3.02 mm and 5.90 ± 7.58 mm for 2.5D and 2D ResAttU-Net, respectively. The 2.5D ResAttU-Net provides accurate segmentation of OARs without affecting the computational cost. The developed end-to-end pipeline will be merged with the treatment planning system for in-time automatic segmentation.

A search for invisible decays of Higgs bosons is performed using the vector boson fusion and associated ZH production modes. In the ZH mode, the Z boson is required to decay to a pair of charged leptons or a [Formula: see text] quark pair. The searches use the 8 [Formula: see text] pp collision dataset collected by the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of up to 19.7 [Formula: see text]. Certain channels include data from 7 [Formula: see text] collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.9 [Formula: see text]. The searches are sensitive to non-standard-model invisible decays of the recently observed Higgs boson, as well as additional Higgs bosons with similar production modes and large invisible branching fractions. In all channels, the observed data are consistent with the expected standard model backgrounds. Limits are set on the production cross section times invisible branching fraction, as a function of the Higgs boson mass, for the vector boson fusion and ZH production modes. By combining all channels, and assuming standard model Higgs boson cross sections and acceptances, the observed (expected) upper limit on the invisible branching fraction at [Formula: see text] [Formula: see text] is found to be 0.58 (0.44) at 95 % confidence level. We interpret this limit in terms of a Higgs-portal model of dark matter interactions.

Spectra of identified charged hadrons are measured in pPb collisions with the CMS detector at the LHC at [Formula: see text]. Charged pions, kaons, and protons in the transverse-momentum range [Formula: see text]-1.7[Formula: see text] and laboratory rapidity [Formula: see text] are identified via their energy loss in the silicon tracker. The average [Formula: see text] increases with particle mass and the charged multiplicity of the event. The increase of the average [Formula: see text] with charged multiplicity is greater for heavier hadrons. Comparisons to Monte Carlo event generators reveal that Epos Lhc, which incorporates additional hydrodynamic evolution of the created system, is able to reproduce most of the data features, unlike Hijing and Ampt. The [Formula: see text] spectra and integrated yields are also compared to those measured in pp and PbPb collisions at various energies. The average transverse momentum and particle ratio measurements indicate that particle production at LHC energies is strongly correlated with event particle multiplicity.

The mass of the top quark is measured using a sample of [Formula: see text] candidate events with at least six jets in the final state. The sample is selected from data collected with the CMS detector in pp collisions at [Formula: see text] TeV in 2011 and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 3.54 [Formula: see text]. The mass is reconstructed for each event employing a kinematic fit of the jets to a [Formula: see text] hypothesis. The top-quark mass is measured to be [Formula: see text] GeV. A combination with previously published measurements in other decay modes by CMS yields a mass of [Formula: see text] GeV.

The normalised differential top quark-antiquark production cross section is measured as a function of the jet multiplicity in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7[Formula: see text] at the LHC with the CMS detector. The measurement is performed in both the dilepton and lepton+jets decay channels using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.0[Formula: see text]. Using a procedure to associate jets to decay products of the top quarks, the differential cross section of the [Formula: see text] production is determined as a function of the additional jet multiplicity in the lepton+jets channel. Furthermore, the fraction of events with no additional jets is measured in the dilepton channel, as a function of the threshold on the jet transverse momentum. The measurements are compared with predictions from perturbative quantum chromodynamics and no significant deviations are observed.

A study of color coherence effects in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7[Formula: see text] is presented. The data used in the analysis were collected in 2010 with the CMS detector at the LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 36 pb[Formula: see text]. Events are selected that contain at least three jets and where the two jets with the largest transverse momentum exhibit a back-to-back topology. The measured angular correlation between the second- and third-leading jet is shown to be sensitive to color coherence effects, and is compared to the predictions of Monte Carlo models with various implementations of color coherence. None of the models describe the data satisfactorily.

Measurements are reported of the WZ and ZZ production cross sections in proton-proton collisions at [Formula: see text][Formula: see text] in final states where one Z boson decays to b-tagged jets. The other gauge boson, either W or Z, is detected through its leptonic decay (either [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] or [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], or [Formula: see text]). The results are based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 18.9 fb[Formula: see text] collected with the CMS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The measured cross sections, [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], are consistent with next-to-leading order quantum chromodynamics calculations.

A measurement of differential cross sections for the production of a pair of isolated photons in proton-proton collisions at [Formula: see text] is presented. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 5.0[Formula: see text] collected with the CMS detector. A data-driven isolation template method is used to extract the prompt diphoton yield. The measured cross section for two isolated photons, with transverse energy above 40 and 25[Formula: see text] respectively, in the pseudorapidity range [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] and with an angular separation [Formula: see text], is [Formula: see text][Formula: see text]. Differential cross sections are measured as a function of the diphoton invariant mass, the diphoton transverse momentum, the azimuthal angle difference between the two photons, and the cosine of the polar angle in the Collins-Soper reference frame of the diphoton system. The results are compared to theoretical predictions at leading, next-to-leading, and next-to-next-to-leading order in quantum chromodynamics.

- Abstract
Data contained in this report were collected using the National Science Foundation's (NSF) fiscal year 1996 academic research and development expenditures survey and refer to science and engineering expenditures for separately budgeted research and development (R&D). R&D expenditures were collected from 493 institutions of higher education in the United States and outlying areas. The survey questionnaire consisted of four main items. Item 1 requested that institutions report their total current expenditures for separately budgeted science and engineering R&D for all activities specifically organized to produce research outcomes and commissioned by an agency either external to the institution or separately budgeted by an organizational unit, i.e., research centers within the institution by source of funds. Item 1A requested total and federally-financed current fund expenditures for separately budgeted science and engineering R&D passed through the institution to subrecipients. Item 2 requested total and federally-financed current fund expenditures for separately budgeted science and engineering R&D activities by detailed science and engineering fields. Item 3 addressed the portions of total and federally-financed expenditures reported in Items 1 and 2 that were used for purchasing research equipment out of current funds. This publication is comprised of technical notes, detailed statistical tables, a list of university-administered, federally-funded R&D centers for fiscal year 1996, and the survey instruments. (PVD)

Characteristics of multi-particle production in proton-proton collisions at [Formula: see text] are studied as a function of the charged-particle multiplicity, Nch. The produced particles are separated into two classes: those belonging to jets and those belonging to the underlying event. Charged particles are measured with pseudorapidity |η|0.25 GeV/c. Jets are reconstructed from charged-particles only and required to have pT>5 GeV/c. The distributions of jet pT, average pT of charged particles belonging to the underlying event or to jets, jet rates, and jet shapes are presented as functions of Nch and compared to the predictions of the pythia and herwig event generators. Predictions without multi-parton interactions fail completely to describe the Nch-dependence observed in the data. For increasing Nch, pythia systematically predicts higher jet rates and harder pT spectra than seen in the data, whereas herwig shows the opposite trends. At the highest multiplicity, the data-model agreement is worse for most observables, indicating the need for further tuning and/or new model ingredients.

A simultaneous measurement of the top-quark, W-boson, and neutrino masses is reported for [Formula: see text] events selected in the dilepton final state from a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb-1 collected by the CMS experiment in pp collisions at [Formula: see text]. The analysis is based on endpoint determinations in kinematic distributions. When the neutrino and W-boson masses are constrained to their world-average values, a top-quark mass value of [Formula: see text] is obtained. When such constraints are not used, the three particle masses are obtained in a simultaneous fit. In this unconstrained mode the study serves as a test of mass determination methods that may be used in beyond standard model physics scenarios where several masses in a decay chain may be unknown and undetected particles lead to underconstrained kinematics.

A search for physics beyond the standard model is performed with events having one or more hadronically decaying τ leptons, highly energetic jets, and large transverse momentum imbalance. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.98 fb-1 of proton-proton collisions at [Formula: see text] collected with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2011. The number of observed events is consistent with predictions for standard model processes. Lower limits on the mass of the gluino in supersymmetric models are determined.

Results are reported from a search for new physics processes in events containing a single isolated high-transverse-momentum lepton (electron or muon), energetic jets, and large missing transverse momentum. The analysis is based on a 4.98 fb-1 sample of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, obtained with the CMS detector at the LHC. Three separate background estimation methods, each relying primarily on control samples in the data, are applied to a range of signal regions, providing complementary approaches for estimating the background yields. The observed yields are consistent with the predicted standard model backgrounds. The results are interpreted in terms of limits on the parameter space for the constrained minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model, as well as on cross sections for simplified models, which provide a generic description of the production and decay of new particles in specific, topology based final states.Electronic supplementary materialThe online version of this article (doi:10.1140/epjc/s10052-013-2404-z) contains supplementary material, which is available to authorized users.

An inclusive search for supersymmetric processes that produce final states with jets and missing transverse energy is performed in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 11.7 fb-1 collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. In this search, a dimensionless kinematic variable, αT, is used to discriminate between events with genuine and misreconstructed missing transverse energy. The search is based on an examination of the number of reconstructed jets per event, the scalar sum of transverse energies of these jets, and the number of these jets identified as originating from bottom quarks. No significant excess of events over the standard model expectation is found. Exclusion limits are set in the parameter space of simplified models, with a special emphasis on both compressed-spectrum scenarios and direct or gluino-induced production of third-generation squarks. For the case of gluino-mediated squark production, gluino masses up to 950-1125 GeV are excluded depending on the assumed model. For the direct pair-production of squarks, masses up to 450 GeV are excluded for a single light first- or second-generation squark, increasing to 600 GeV for bottom squarks.

A measurement of the inclusive WW+WZ diboson production cross section in proton-proton collisions is reported, based on events containing a leptonically decaying W boson and exactly two jets. The data sample, collected at [Formula: see text] with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb-1. The measured value of the sum of the inclusive WW and WZ cross sections is σ(pp→WW+WZ)=68.9±8.7 (stat.)±9.7 (syst.)±1.5 (lum.) pb, consistent with the standard model prediction of 65.6±2.2 pb. This is the first measurement of WW+WZ production in pp collisions using this signature. No evidence for anomalous triple gauge couplings is found and upper limits are set on their magnitudes.

Abstract : A search for the Higgs boson produced in association with a W or Z boson in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV is performed with the CMS detector at the LHC using the full 2011 data sample, from an integrated luminosity of 5 fb−1. Higgs boson decay modes to ττ and WW are explored by selecting events with three or four leptons in the final state. No excess above background expectations is observed, resulting in exclusion limits on the product of Higgs associated production cross section and decay branching fraction for Higgs boson masses between 110 and 200 GeV in these channels. Combining these results with other CMS associated production searches using the same dataset in the H→ γγ and H→ b $ \overline{\mathrm{b}} $ decay modes, the cross section for associated Higgs boson production 3.3 times the standard model expectation or larger is ruled out at the 95% confidence level for a Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV.

Measurements from the CMS experiment at the LHC of dihadron correlations for charged particles produced in PbPb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of 2. 76 TeV are presented. The results are reported as a function of the particle transverse momenta (pT) and collision centrality over a broad range in relative pseudorapidity (Δη) and the full range of relative azimuthal angle (Δφ). The observed two-dimensional correlation structure in Δη and Δφ is characterised by a narrow peak at (Δη,Δφ)≈(0,0) from jet-like correlations and a long-range structure that persists up to at least {pipe}Δη{pipe}=4. An enhancement of the magnitude of the short-range jet peak is observed with increasing centrality, especially for particles of pT around 1-2 GeV/c. The long-range azimuthal dihadron correlations are extensively studied using a Fourier decomposition analysis. The extracted Fourier coefficients are found to factorise into a product of single-particle azimuthal anisotropies up to pT≈3-3. 5 GeV/c for at least one particle from each pair, except for the second-order harmonics in the most central PbPb events. Various orders of the single-particle azimuthal anisotropy harmonics are extracted for associated particle pT of 1-3 GeV/c, as a function of the trigger particle pT up to 20 GeV/c and over the full centrality range. © 2012 CERN for the benefit of the CMS collaboration.

A measurement is presented of the relative prompt production rate of χc2 and χc1 with 4.6 fb-1 of data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in pp collisions at [Formula: see text]. The two states are measured via their radiative decays χc→J/ψ+γ, with the photon converting into an e+e- pair for J/ψ rapidity |y(J/ψ)|0.5 GeV/c. The measurement is given for six intervals of pT(J/ψ) between 7 and 25 GeV/c. The results are compared to theoretical predictions.

Measurements are presented of the differential cross sections for Z bosons produced in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV and decaying to muons and electrons. The data analyzed were collected in 2016 with the CMS detector at the LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb−1. The measured fiducial inclusive product of cross section and branching fraction agrees with next-to-next-to-leading order quantum chromodynamics calculations. Differential cross sections of the transverse momentum pT, the optimized angular variable ϕη∗, and the rapidity of lepton pairs are measured. The data are corrected for detector effects and compared to theoretical predictions using fixed order, resummed, and parton shower calculations. The uncertainties of the measured normalized cross sections are smaller than 0.5% for ϕη∗< 0.5 and for pTZ< 50 GeV. [Figure not available: see fulltext.]

The landscape has become the red thread of the 2020-2035 Charter for the Morvan Regional Nature Park. Stakeholders realise that in considering the future of a forest landscape they need to systemically take into account the activities deployed within it and, above all, to recognise the landscape as an excellent lever for motivation and mediation between actors. By addressing cultural or societal expectations, enhancing the project, and gaining the population’s approval can ensure the landscape is experienced as a living space. A landscape must function in relation to its ecological, socio-economic, and cultural components. If these components evolve in a logical and comprehensible way in tune with a certain "state of the world”, their change is easily accepted. The landscape can therefore no longer be perceived as "the part of a region nature presents to an observer". From this object-subject perspective, the forest landscapes of the Morvan sometimes offer us a spectacle of desolation and emptiness. This coupling of subject and object which is specific to the Western definition of the landscape could be replaced by a vision derived from Chinese thought. We will see how the production of emerging categories based on regional consultation procedures can enable actors to work together on preserving the shared experience of the landscape. The solution to such oppositions lies in the construction of a shared vision of the future of the landscape of the Morvan Massif. We will back up the arguments put forward in this article with the many evaluations and surveys carried out during the revision of the charter.
