Search

Carbon- and Oxygen-rich stars populating the Thermally-Pulsing Asymptotic Giant Branch (TP-AGB) phase of stellar evolution are relevant contributors to the spectra of ~1 Gyr old populations. Atmosphere models for these types are uncertain, due to complex molecules and mass-loss effects. Empirical spectra are then crucial, but samples are small due to the short (~3 Myr) TP-AGB lifetime. Here we exploit the vastness of the MaNGA Stellar library MaStar (~60,000 spectra) to identify C,O-rich type stars. We define an optical colour selection with cuts of (g-r)>2 and (g-i)<1.55(g-r)-0.07, calibrated with known C- and O- rich spectra. This identifies C-,O-rich stars along clean, separated sequences. An analogue selection is found in V,R,I bands. Our equation identifies C- and O-rich spectra with predictive performance metric F1-scores of 0.72 and 0.74 (over 1), respectively. We finally identify 41 C- and 87 O-rich type AGB stars in MaStar, 5 and 49 of which do not have a SIMBAD counterpart. We also detect a sample of non-AGB, dwarf C-stars. We further design a fitting procedure to classify the spectra into broad spectral types, by using as fitting templates empirical C and O-rich spectra. We find remarkably good fits for the majority of candidates and categorise them into C- and O-rich bins following existing classifications, which correlate to effective temperature. Our selection models can be applied to large photometric surveys (e.g. Euclid, Rubin). Age-dating and weighting stellar populations in galaxies are essential steps to study galaxy formation through cosmic times. Evolutionary population synthesis models with different input physics are used towards this aim. In particular, the contribution from the thermally pulsing asymptotic giant branch (TP-AGB) stellar phase, which peaks for intermediate-age 0.6-2 Gyr systems, has been debated upon for decades. Here we report the detection of strong cool-star signatures in the rest-frame near-infrared spectra of three young (~1 Gyr), massive (~10^10 Msun) quiescent galaxies at large look-back time, z=1-2, using JWST/NIRSpec. The co-existence of oxygen- and carbon-type absorption features, spectral edges and features from rare species such as Vanadium, and possibly Zirconium, reveal a strong contribution from TP-AGB stars. Population synthesis models with significant TP-AGB contribution reproduce the observations better than those with weak TP-AGB, which are commonly used. These findings call for revisions of published stellar population fitting results, pointing to lower masses and younger ages, with additional implications on cosmic dust production and chemical enrichment. Stellar population studies of massive early-type galaxies (ETGs) suggest that the stellar initial mass function may not be universal. In particular, the centres of ETGs seem to contain an excess of low-mass dwarf stars compared to our own Galaxy. Through high resolution MUSE IFU data, we carry out a detailed study of the stellar populations of eight massive ETGs. We use full spectrum fitting to determine ages, element abundances, and IMF slopes for spatially binned spectra. We measure flat gradients in age and [Mg/Fe] ratio, as well as negative gradients in metallicity and [Na/Fe]. We detect IMF gradients in some galaxies, with the centres hosting bottom-heavy IMFs and mass excess factors between 1.5-2.5 compared to a Kroupa IMF. The IMF slope below 0.5~M$_\odot$ varies for our galaxy sample between 1-2.8, with negative radial gradients, while the IMF slope between 0.5-1~M$_\odot$ has a steep value of $\sim$3 with mildly positive gradients for most galaxies. For M87, we find excellent agreement with the dynamical M/L as a function of radius. For the other galaxies, we find systematically higher M/L from stellar populations compared to orbit-based dynamical analysis of the same data. We have selected galaxies with very high levels of H$\alpha$ emission (EQW(H$\alpha$)$>$700 \AA.) in their central regions from the final data release of the MaNGA survey . Our study focuses on 14 very well-resolved nearby galaxies with stellar masses in the range $9.5 < \log M_*/(M_{\odot}) < 11.5$. We investigate a variety of procedures for selecting galaxy regions that are likely to harbour excess populations of young massive stars, finding that selection in the 2-dimensional space of extinction-corrected H$\alpha$ EQW and [SIII]/[SII] line ratio produces the best results. By comparing stacked spectra covering these regions with stacked spectra covering normal starburst regions with 100\AA$<$EQW(H$\alpha$)$<$200\AA, we obtain the following main results: 1) Clear signatures of excess Wolf Rayet stars are found in half of the H$\alpha$ excess regions, 2) Galaxy regions containing excess Wolf Rayet stars are more often associated with the presence of high-ionization emission lines characteristic of accreting black holes. Excess [NeIII] is detected in 4 out of 8 of the WR regions and there are tentative [FeX] detections in 2 galaxies. 3) Regions of the galaxy with excess Wolf Rayet stars are located where the interstellar medium has larger ionized gas turbulent velocities and higher neutral gas overdensities. We make a first attempt to constrain changes in the high mass end of the stellar initial mass function (IMF) using the HR-pyPopStar evolutionary population synthesis models that include high wavelength-resolution theoretical atmosphere libraries for Wolf Rayet stars., Comment: accepted for publication in MNRAS

The iMaNGA project uses a forward-modelling approach to compare the predictions of cosmological simulations with observations from SDSS-IV/MaNGA. We investigate the dependency of age and metallicity radial gradients on galaxy morphology, stellar mass, stellar surface mass density ($\Sigma_*$), and environment. The key of our analysis is that observational biases affecting the interpretation of MaNGA data are emulated in the theoretical iMaNGA sample. The simulations reproduce the observed global stellar population scaling relations with positive correlations between galaxy mass and age/metallicity quite well and also produce younger stellar populations in late-type in agreement with observations. We do find interesting discrepancies, though, that can inform the physics and further development of the simulations. Ages of spiral galaxies and low-mass ellipticals are overestimated by about 2-4 Gyr. Radial metallicity gradients are steeper in iMaNGA than in MaNGA, a discrepancy most prominent in spiral and lenticular galaxies. Also, the observed steepening of metallicity gradients with increasing galaxy mass is not well matched by the simulations. We find that the theoretical radial profiles of surface mass density $\Sigma_*$ are steeper than in observations except for the most massive galaxies. In both MaNGA and iMaNGA [Z/H] correlates with $\Sigma_*$, however, the simulations systematically predict lower [Z/H] by almost a factor of 2 at any $\Sigma_*$. Most interestingly, for galaxies with stellar mass $\log M_*\leq 10.80 M_\odot$ the MaNGA data reveal a positive correlation between galaxy radius and [Z/H] at fixed $\Sigma_*$, which is not recovered in iMaNGA. Finally, the dependence on environmental density is negligible in both the theoretical iMaNGA and the observed MaNGA data.

We report the discovery of 15 exceptionally luminous $10\lesssim z\lesssim14$ candidate galaxies discovered in the first 0.28 deg$^2$ of JWST/NIRCam imaging from the COSMOS-Web Survey. These sources span rest-frame UV magnitudes of $-20.5>M_{\rm UV}>-22$, and thus constitute the most intrinsically luminous $z\gtrsim10$ candidates identified by JWST to-date. Selected via NIRCam imaging with Hubble ACS/F814W, deep ground-based observations corroborate their detection and help significantly constrain their photometric redshifts. We analyze their spectral energy distributions using multiple open-source codes and evaluate the probability of low-redshift solutions; we conclude that 12/15 (80%) are likely genuine $z\gtrsim10$ sources and 3/15 (20%) likely low-redshift contaminants. Three of our $z\sim12$ candidates push the limits of early stellar mass assembly: they have estimated stellar masses $\sim5\times10^{9}\,M_\odot$, implying an effective stellar baryon fraction of $\epsilon_{\star}\sim0.2-0.5$, where $\epsilon_{\star}\equiv M_{\star}/(f_{b}M_{halo})$. The assembly of such stellar reservoirs is made possible due to rapid, burst-driven star formation on timescales $<$100\,Myr where the star-formation rate may far outpace the growth of the underlying dark matter halos. This is supported by the similar volume densities inferred for $M_\star\sim10^{10}\,M_\odot$ galaxies relative to $M_\star\sim10^{9}\,M_\odot$ -- both about $10^{-6}$ Mpc$^{-3}$ -- implying they live in halos of comparable mass. At such high redshifts, the duty cycle for starbursts would be of order unity, which could cause the observed change in the shape of the UVLF from a double powerlaw to Schechter at $z\approx8$. We report the identification of 15 galaxy candidates at $z\ge9$ using the initial COSMOS-Web JWST observations over 77 arcmin$^2$ through four NIRCam filters (F115W, F150W, F277W, F444W) with an overlap with MIRI (F770W) of 8.7 arcmin$^2$. We fit the sample using several publicly-available SED fitting and photometric redshift codes and determine their redshifts between $z=9.3$ and $z=10.9$ ($\langle z\rangle=10.0$), UV-magnitudes between M$_{\rm UV}$ = $-$21.2 and $-$19.5 (with $\langle $M$_{\rm UV}\rangle=-20.2$) and rest-frame UV slopes ($\langle \beta\rangle=-2.4$). These galaxies are, on average, more luminous than most $z\ge9$ candidates discovered by JWST so far in the literature, while exhibiting similar blue colors in their rest-frame UV. The rest-frame UV slopes derived from SED-fitting are blue ($\beta\sim$[$-$2.0, $-$2.7]) without reaching extremely blue values as reported in other recent studies at these redshifts. The blue color is consistent with models that suggest the underlying stellar population is not yet fully enriched in metals like similarly luminous galaxies in the lower redshift Universe. The derived stellar masses with $\langle \log_{\rm 10} ($M$_\star/$M$_\odot)\rangle\approx8-9$ are not in tension with the standard $\Lambda$CDM model and our measurement of the volume density of such UV luminous galaxies aligns well with previously measured values presented in the literature at $z\sim9-10$. We have measured the angular auto-correlation function of near-infrared galaxies in SERVS+DeepDrill, the Spitzer Extragalactic Representative Volume Survey and its follow-up survey of the Deep Drilling Fields, in three large fields totalling over 20 sq. deg on the sky, observed in two bands centred on 3.6 and 4.5 micron. We performed this analysis on the full sample as well as on sources selected by [3.6]-[4.5] colour in order to probe clustering for different redshift regimes. We estimated the spatial correlation strength as well, using the redshift distribution from S-COSMOS with the same source selection. The strongest clustering was found for our bluest subsample, with z~0.7, which has the narrowest redshift distribution of all our subsamples. We compare these estimates to previous results from the literature, but also to estimates derived from mock samples, selected in the same way as the observational data, using deep light-cones generated from the SHARK semi-analytical model of galaxy formation. For all simulated (sub)samples we find a slightly steeper slope than for the corresponding observed ones, but the spatial clustering length is comparable in most cases., Comment: 20 pages, 15 figures, 6 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We study the prospects for detection of continuous gravitational signals from "normal" Galactic neutron stars, i.e. non-recycled ones. We use a synthetic population generated by evolving stellar remnants in time, according to several models. We consider the most recent constraints set by all-sky searches for continuous gravitational waves and use them for our detectability criteria. We discuss detection prospects for the current and the next generation of gravitational wave detectors. We find that neutron stars whose ellipticity is solely caused by magnetic deformations cannot produce any detectable signal, not even by 3rd-generation detectors. Currently detectable sources all have $B\lesssim10^{12}$ G and deformations not solely due to the magnetic field. For these in fact we find that the larger the magnetic field is, the larger is the ellipticity required for the signal to be detectable and this ellipticity is well above the value induced by the magnetic field. Third-generation detectors as the Einstein Telescope and Cosmic Explorer will be able to detect up to $\approx 250$ more sources than current detectors. We briefly treat the case of recycled neutron stars, with a simplified model. We find that continuous gravitational waves from these objects will likely remain elusive to detection by current detectors but should be detectable with the next generation of detectors.

Strengthening the synergy between simulations and observations is essential to test galaxy formation and evolution theories. To achieve this goal, in the first paper of this series, we presented a method to generate mock SDSS-IV/MaNGA integral-field spectroscopic galaxy observations from cosmological simulations. In this second paper, we build the iMaNGA catalogue consisting of $\sim$1,000 unique galaxies from the TNG50 cosmological simulations, selected to mimic the SDSS-IV/MaNGA-Primary sample selection. Here we present and discuss the iMaNGA sample and its comparison to the MaNGA Primary catalogue. The iMaNGA sample well recovers the MaNGA-Primary sample in terms of stellar mass vs angular size relation and spatial resolution. The S\'ersic index vs angular size relation, instead, is not reproduced well by the simulations, mostly because of a paucity of high-mass elliptical galaxies in TNG50. We also investigate our ability to recover the galaxy kinematics and stellar population properties with full-spectral fitting. We demonstrate that 'intrinsic' and `recovered' stellar kinematics, stellar ages and metallicities are consistent, with residuals compatible with zero within 1$-{\sigma}$. Also`intrinsic' and `recovered' star formation histories display a great resemblance. We conclude that our mock generation and spectral fitting processes do not distort the `intrinsic' galaxy properties. We present the survey design, implementation, and outlook for COSMOS-Web, a 255 hour treasury program conducted by the James Webb Space Telescope in its first cycle of observations. COSMOS-Web is a contiguous 0.54 deg$^2$ NIRCam imaging survey in four filters (F115W, F150W, F277W, and F444W) that will reach 5$\sigma$ point source depths ranging $\sim$27.5-28.2 magnitudes. In parallel, we will obtain 0.19 deg$^2$ of MIRI imaging in one filter (F770W) reaching 5$\sigma$ point source depths of $\sim$25.3-26.0 magnitudes. COSMOS-Web will build on the rich heritage of multiwavelength observations and data products available in the COSMOS field. The design of COSMOS-Web is motivated by three primary science goals: (1) to discover thousands of galaxies in the Epoch of Reionization ($64$ and place constraints on the formation of the Universe's most massive galaxies ($M_\star>10^{10}$\,M$_\odot$), and (3) directly measure the evolution of the stellar mass to halo mass relation using weak gravitational lensing out to $z\sim2.5$ and measure its variance with galaxies' star formation histories and morphologies. In addition, we anticipate COSMOS-Web's legacy value to reach far beyond these scientific goals, touching many other areas of astrophysics, such as the identification of the first direct collapse black hole candidates, ultracool sub-dwarf stars in the Galactic halo, and possibly the identification of $z>10$ pair-instability supernovae. We present a stellar parameter catalog built to accompany the MaStar Stellar Library, which is a comprehensive collection of empirical, medium-resolution stellar spectra. We constructed this parameter catalog by using a multicomponent $\chi^{2}$ fitting approach to match MaStar spectra to models generated by interpolating the ATLAS9-based BOSZ model spectra. The total $\chi^{2}$ for a given model is defined as the sum of components constructed to characterize narrow-band features of observed spectra (e.g., absorption lines) and the broadband continuum shape separately. Extinction and systematics due to flux calibration were taken into account in the fitting. The $\chi^{2}$ distribution for a given region of model space was sampled using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm, the data from which were then used to extract atmospheric parameter estimates ($T_{eff}$, log g, [Fe/H], and [$\alpha$/Fe]), their corresponding uncertainties, and direct extinction measurements. Two methods were used to extract parameters and uncertainties: one that accepts the MCMC's prescribed minimum-$\chi^{2}$ result, and one that uses Bayesian inference to compute a likelihood-weighted mean from the $\chi^{2}$ distribution sampled by the MCMC. Results were evaluated for internal consistency using repeat observations where available and by comparing them with external data sets (e.g., APOGEE-2 and Gaia DR2). Our spectral-fitting exercise reveals possible deficiencies in current theoretical model spectra, illustrating the potential power of MaStar spectra for helping to improve the models. We spectroscopically detected candidate emission-lines of 8 likely, 17 probable, and 69 possible strong galaxy-galaxy gravitational lens candidates found within the spectra of ~10,000 galaxy targets contained within the completed Mapping of Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey. This search is based upon the methodology of the Spectroscopic Identification of Lensing Objects (SILO) project, which extends the spectroscopic detection methods of the BOSS Emission-Line Lensing Survey (BELLS) and the Sloan Lens ACS Survey (SLACS). We scanned the co-added residuals that we constructed from stacks of foreground subtracted row-stacked-spectra (RSS) so a sigma-clipping method can be used to reject cosmic-rays and other forms of transients that impact only a small fraction of the combined exposures. We also constructed narrow-band images from the signal-to-noise of the co-added residuals to observe signs of lensed source images. We also use several methods to compute the probable strong lensing regime for each candidate lens to determine which candidate background galaxies may reside sufficiently near the galaxy centre for strong lensing to occur. We present the spectroscopic redshifts within a value-added catalogue (VAC) for data release 17 (DR17) of SDSS-IV. We also present the lens candidates, spectroscopic data, and narrow-band images within a VAC for DR17. High resolution follow-up imaging of these lens candidates are expected to yield a sample of confirmed grade-A lenses with sufficient angular size to probe possible discrepancies between the mass derived from a best-fitting lens model, and the dynamical mass derived from the observed stellar velocities., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, June 20, 2022. We select 1076 galaxies with extinction-corrected Halpha equivalent widths too large to be explained with a Kroupa (2001) IMF, and compare these with a control sample of galaxies that is matched in stellar mass, redshift and 4000 AA break strength, but with normal Halpha equivalent widths. Our goal is to study how processes such as black hole growth and energetic feedback processes from massive stars differ between galaxies with extreme central Halpha emission and galaxies with normal young central stellar populations. The stellar mass distribution of Halpha excess galaxies is peaked at 3 \times 10^10 Msun and almost all fall well within the star-forming locus in the [OIII]/Hbeta versus [NII]/Halpha BPT disgram. Halpha excess galaxies are twice as likely to exhibit Halpha line asymmetries and 1.55 times more likely to be detected at 1 GHz in the VLA FIRST survey compared to control sample galaxies. The radio luminosity per unit stellar mass decreases with the stellar age of the system. Using stacked spectra, we demonstrate that [NeV] emission is not present in the very youngest of the radio-quiet Halpha excess galaxies with detectable Wolf-Rayet features, suggesting that black hole growth has not yet commenced in such systems. [NeV] emission is detected in Halpha excess galaxies with radio detections and the strength of the line correlates with the radio luminosity. Galaxy formation and evolution simulations are essential tools to probe poorly known astrophysics processes, but particular care is needed to compare simulations with galaxy observations, as observed data need to be modelled as well. We present a method to generate mock galaxies from the hydro-dynamical IllustrisTNG simulations which are suited to compare with integral field spectroscopic observation of galaxies from the SDSS-IV/MaNGA survey. Firstly, we include the same instrumental effects and procedures as adopted in the acquisition and analysis of real data. Furthermore, we generate the galaxy spectra from the simulations using new stellar population models based on the MaNGA stellar library (MaStar). In this way, our mock data cubes have the same spatial sampling, cover the same wavelength range (3600-10300 \r{A}), and share the same spectral resolution ($R\approx1800$) and flux calibration of real MaNGA galaxy spectra. In this first paper, we demonstrate the method over an early-type and a late-type simulated galaxy from TNG50. We analyse the correspondent mock MaNGA-like data cubes with the same full spectral fitting code, \textsc{FIREFLY}, which was used for the observed spectra. We find that the intrinsic and recovered age and metallicity gradients are consistent within 1${\sigma}$, with residuals over all tassels consistent with $0$ at the 68$\%$ confidence level. We also perform the challenging test at comparing intrinsic and recovered star formation histories, finding a close resemblance between input and output. In follow-up papers, we will present a full simulated MaNGA-like catalogue ($\approx10,000$ galaxies) with a comprehensive comparison of TNG50 simulations to MaNGA observational results.

We present the MaNGA FIREFLY Value-Added-Catalogue (VAC) - a catalogue of ~3.7 million spatially resolved stellar population properties across 10,010 nearby galaxies from the final data release of the MaNGA survey. The full spectral fitting code firefly is employed to derive parameters such as stellar ages, metallicities, stellar and remnant masses, star formation histories, star formation rates and dust attenuation. In addition to Voronoi-binned measurements, our VAC also provides global properties, such as central values and radial gradients. Two variants of the VAC are available: presenting the results from fits using the M11-MILES and the novel MaStar stellar population models. MaStar allows to constrain the fit over the whole MaNGA wavelength range, extends the age-metallicity parameter space, and uses empirical spectra from the same instrument as MaNGA. The fits employing MaStar models find on average slightly younger ages, higher mass-weighted metallicities and smaller colour excesses. These differences are reduced when matching wavelength range and converging template grids. We further report that FIREFLY stellar masses are systematically lower by ~0.3 dex than masses from the MaNGA PCA and Pipe3D VACs, but match masses from the NSA best with only ~0.1 dex difference. Finally, we show that FIREFLY stellar ages correlate with spectral index age indicators H$\delta_A$ and $D_n$(4000), though with a clear additional metallicity dependence., Comment: 20 pages, 16 figures (+appendix). This report is the result of a joint discussion between the Rubin and Euclid scientific communities. The work presented in this report was focused on designing and recommending an initial set of Derived Data products (DDPs) that could realize the science goals enabled by joint processing. All interested Rubin and Euclid data rights holders were invited to contribute via an online discussion forum and a series of virtual meetings. Strong interest in enhancing science with joint DDPs emerged from across a wide range of astrophysical domains: Solar System, the Galaxy, the Local Volume, from the nearby to the primaeval Universe, and cosmology., Comment: Report of the Rubin-Euclid Derived Data Products Working Group, 78 pages, 11 figures

This paper documents the seventeenth data release (DR17) from the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys; the fifth and final release from the fourth phase (SDSS-IV). DR17 contains the complete release of the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey, which reached its goal of surveying over 10,000 nearby galaxies. The complete release of the MaNGA Stellar Library (MaStar) accompanies this data, providing observations of almost 30,000 stars through the MaNGA instrument during bright time. DR17 also contains the complete release of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 (APOGEE-2) survey which publicly releases infra-red spectra of over 650,000 stars. The main sample from the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS), as well as the sub-survey Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey (TDSS) data were fully released in DR16. New single-fiber optical spectroscopy released in DR17 is from the SPectroscipic IDentification of ERosita Survey (SPIDERS) sub-survey and the eBOSS-RM program. Along with the primary data sets, DR17 includes 25 new or updated Value Added Catalogs (VACs). This paper concludes the release of SDSS-IV survey data. SDSS continues into its fifth phase with observations already underway for the Milky Way Mapper (MWM), Local Volume Mapper (LVM) and Black Hole Mapper (BHM) surveys., Comment: 40 pages, 8 figures, 6 tables. The MaNGA Stellar Library (MaStar) is a large collection of high-quality empirical stellar spectra designed to cover all spectral types and ideal for use in the stellar population analysis of galaxies observed in the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey. The library contains 59,266 spectra of 24,130 unique stars with spectral resolution $R\sim1800$ and covering a wavelength range of $3,622-10,354$ \r{A}. In this work, we derive five physical parameters for each spectrum in the library: effective temperature ($T_{eff}$), surface gravity ($\log g$), metalicity ($[Fe/H]$), micro-turbulent velocity ($\log(v_{micro})$), and alpha-element abundance ($[\alpha/Fe]$). These parameters are derived with a flexible data-driven algorithm that uses a neural network model. We train a neural network using the subset of 1,675 MaStar targets that have also been observed in the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE), adopting the independently-derived APOGEE Stellar Parameter and Chemical Abundance Pipeline (ASPCAP) parameters for this reference set. For the regions of parameter space not well represented by the APOGEE training set ($7,000 \leq T \leq 30,000$ K), we supplement with theoretical model spectra. We calculate the fundamental stellar parameters effective temperature, surface gravity and iron abundance - T$_{\rm eff}$, log g, [Fe/H] - for the final release of the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA) Stellar Library (MaStar), containing 59,266 per-visit-spectra for 24,290 unique stars at intermediate resolution ($R\sim1800$) and high S/N (median = 96). We fit theoretical spectra from model atmospheres by both MARCS and BOSZ-ATLAS9 to the observed MaStar spectra, using the full spectral fitting code pPXF. We further employ a Bayesian approach, using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) technique to map the parameter space and obtain uncertainties. Originally in this paper, we cross match MaStar observations with Gaia photometry, which enable us to set reliable priors and identify outliers according to stellar evolution. In parallel to the parameter determination, we calculate corresponding stellar population models to test the reliability of the parameters for each stellar evolutionary phase. We further assess our procedure by determining parameters for standard stars such as the Sun and Vega and by comparing our parameters with those determined in the literature from high-resolution spectroscopy (APOGEE and SEGUE) and from lower-resolution matching template (LAMOST). The comparisons, considering the different methodologies and S/N of the literature surveys, are favourable in all cases. Our final parameter catalogue for MaStar cover the following ranges: $2592 \leq $ T$_{\rm eff} \leq 32983\;$K; $-0.7 \leq $ log g $ \leq 5.4\;$dex; $-2.9 \leq $ [Fe/H] $\leq 1.0\;$dex and will be available with the last SDSS-IV Data Release, in December 2021., Comment: 22 pages, 25 figures. The distribution of stellar metallicities within and across galaxies is an excellent relic of the chemical evolution across cosmic time. We present a detailed analysis of spatially resolved stellar populations based on $>2.6$ million spatial bins from 7439 nearby galaxies in the SDSS-IV MaNGA survey. To account for accurate inclination corrections, we derive an equation for morphology dependent determination of galaxy inclinations. Our study goes beyond the well-known global mass-metallicity relation and radial metallicity gradients by providing a statistically sound exploration of local relations between stellar metallicity $[Z/H]$, stellar surface mass density $\Sigma_\star$ and galactocentric distance in the global mass-morphology plane. We find a significant resolved mass density-metallicity relation $\rm r\Sigma_\star ZR$ for galaxies of all types and masses above $10^{9.8}\,\mathrm{M_\odot}$. Different radial distances make an important contribution to the spread of the relation. Particularly, in low and intermediate mass galaxies, we find that at fixed $\Sigma_\star$ metallicity increases with radius independently of morphology. For high masses, this radial dependence is only observed in high $\Sigma_\star$ regions of spiral galaxies. This result calls for a driver of metallicity, in addition to $\Sigma_\star$ that promotes chemical enrichment in the outer parts of galaxies more strongly than in the inner parts. We derive ages, metallicities, and individual element abundances of early- and late-type galaxies (ETGs and LTGs) out to 1.5 R$_e$. We study a large sample of 1900 galaxies spanning $8.6 - 11.3 \log M/M_{\odot}$ in stellar mass, through key absorption features in stacked spectra from the SDSS-IV/MaNGA survey. We use mock galaxy spectra with extended star formation histories to validate our method for LTGs and use corrections to convert the derived ages into luminosity- and mass-weighted quantities. We find flat age and negative metallicity gradients for ETGs and negative age and negative metallicity gradients for LTGs. Age gradients in LTGs steepen with increasing galaxy mass, from $-0.05\pm0.11~\log$ Gyr/R$_e$ for the lowest mass galaxies to $-0.82\pm0.08~\log$ Gyr/R$_e$ for the highest mass ones. This strong gradient-mass relation has a slope of $-0.70\pm0.18$. Comparing local age and metallicity gradients with the velocity dispersion $\sigma$ within galaxies against the global relation with $\sigma$ shows that internal processes regulate metallicity in ETGs but not age, and vice versa for LTGs. We further find that metallicity gradients with respect to local $\sigma$ show a much stronger dependence on galaxy mass than radial metallicity gradients. Both galaxy types display flat [C/Fe] and [Mg/Fe], and negative [Na/Fe] gradients, whereas only LTGs display gradients in [Ca/Fe] and [Ti/Fe]. ETGs have increasingly steep [Na/Fe] gradients with local $\sigma$ reaching $6.50\pm0.78$ dex/$\log$ km/s for the highest masses. We extend our previous work on the age-chemical abundance structure of the Galactic outer disc to the inner disc (4 < r < 8 kpc) based on the SDSS/APOGEE survey. Different from the outer disc, the inner disc stars exhibit a clear bimodal distribution in the [Mg/Fe]-[Fe/H] plane. While a number of scenarios have been proposed in the literature, it remains challenging to recover this bimodal distribution with theoretical models. To this end, we present a chemical evolution model embedding a complex multi-phase inner disc formation scenario that matches the observed bimodal [Mg/Fe]-[Fe/H] distribution. In this scenario, the formation of the inner disc is dominated by two main starburst episodes 6 Gyr apart with secular, low-level star formation activity in between. In our model, the first starburst occurs at early cosmic times (t~1 Gyr) and the second one 6 Gyr later at a cosmic time of t~7 Gyr. Both these starburst episodes are associated with gas accretion events in our model, and are quenched rapidly. The first starburst leads to the formation of the high-$\alpha$ sequence, and the second starburst leads to the formation of the metal-poor low-$\alpha$ sequence. The metal-rich low-$\alpha$ stars, instead, form during the secular evolution phase between the two bursts. Our model shows that the $\alpha$-dichotomy originates from the rapid suppression of star formation after the first starburst. The two starburst episodes are likely to be responsible for the formation of the geometric thick disc (z >1 kpc), with the old inner thick disc and the young outer thick disc forming during the first and the second starbursts, respectively., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures. We report the stellar atmospheric parameters for 7503 spectra contained in the first release of the MaNGA stellar library (MaStar) in SDSS DR15. The first release of MaStar contains 8646 spectra measured from 3321 unique stars, each covering the wavelength range 3622 \AA\ to 10354 \AA\ with a resolving power of $R \sim$ 1800. In this work, we first determined the basic stellar parameters: effective temperature ($\rm T_{eff}$), surface gravity ($\log g$), and metallicity ($\rm[Fe/H]$), which best fit the data using an empirical interpolator based on the Medium-resolution Isaac Newton Telescope library of empirical spectra (MILES), as implemented by the University of Lyon Spectroscopic analysis Software (Koleva et al. 2008, ULySS) package. While we analyzed all 8646 spectra from the first release of MaStar, since MaStar has a wider parameter-space coverage than MILES, not all of these fits are robust. In addition, not all parameter regions covered by MILES yield robust results, likely due to the non-uniform coverage of the parameter space by MILES. We tested the robustness of the method using the MILES spectra itself and identified a proxy based on the local density of the training set. With this proxy, we identified 7503 MaStar spectra with robust fitting results. They cover the range from 3179K to 20,517K in effective temperature ($\rm T_{eff}$), from 0.40 to 5.0 in surface gravity ($\log g$), and from $-$2.49 to $+$0.73 in metallicity ($\rm[Fe/H]$)., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures

We investigate the environmental dependence of the stellar populations of galaxies in SDSS DR7. Echoing earlier works, we find that satellites are both more metal-rich (<0.1 dex) and older (<2 Gyr) than centrals of the same stellar mass. However, after separating star-forming, green valley and passive galaxies, we find that the true environmental dependence of both stellar metallicity (<0.03 dex) and age (<0.5 Gyr) is in fact much weaker. We show that the strong environmental effects found when galaxies are not differentiated result from a combination of selection effects brought about by the environmental dependence of the quenched fraction of galaxies, and thus we strongly advocate for the separation of star-forming, green valley and passive galaxies when the environmental dependence of galaxy properties are investigated. We also study further environmental trends separately for both central and satellite galaxies. We find that star-forming galaxies show no environmental effects, neither for centrals nor for satellites. In contrast, the stellar metallicities of passive and green valley satellites increase weakly (< 0.05 dex and < 0.08 dex, respectively) with increasing halo mass, increasing local overdensity and decreasing projected distance from their central; this effect is interpreted in terms of moderate environmental starvation (`strangulation') contributing to the quenching of satellite galaxies. Finally, we find a unique feature in the stellar mass--stellar metallicity relation for passive centrals, where galaxies in more massive haloes have larger stellar mass (~0.1 dex) at constant stellar metallicity; this effect is interpreted in terms of dry merging of passive central galaxies and/or progenitor bias., Comment: 22 pages, 18 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We investigate the age-chemical abundance structure of the outer Galactic disc at a galactocentric distance of r > 10 kpc as recently revealed by the SDSS/APOGEE survey. Two sequences are present in the [alpha/Fe]-[Fe/H] plane with systematically different stellar ages. Surprisingly, the young sequence is less metal-rich, suggesting a recent dilution process by additional gas accretion. As the stars with the lowest iron abundance in the younger sequence also show an enhancement in alpha-element abundance, the gas accretion event must have involved a burst of star formation. In order to explain these observations, we construct a chemical evolution model. In this model we include a relatively short episode of gas accretion at late times on top of an underlying secular accretion over long timescales. Our model is successful at reproducing the observed distribution of stars in the three dimensional space of [alpha/Fe]-[Fe/H]-Age in the outer disc. We find that a late-time accretion with a delay of 8.2 Gyr and a timescale of 0.7 Gyr best fits the observed data, in particular the presence of the young, metal-poor sequence. Our best-fit model further implies that the amount of accreted gas in the late-time accretion event needs to be about three times the local gas reservoir in the outer disc at the time of accretion in order to sufficiently dilute the metal abundance. Given this large fraction, we interpret the late-time accretion event as a minor merger presumably with a gas-rich dwarf galaxy with a mass M_* < 10^9 M_Sun and a gas fraction of ~ 75 per cent., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

This paper documents the sixteenth data release (DR16) from the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys; the fourth and penultimate from the fourth phase (SDSS-IV). This is the first release of data from the southern hemisphere survey of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 (APOGEE-2); new data from APOGEE-2 North are also included. DR16 is also notable as the final data release for the main cosmological program of the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS), and all raw and reduced spectra from that project are released here. DR16 also includes all the data from the Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey (TDSS) and new data from the SPectroscopic IDentification of ERosita Survey (SPIDERS) programs, both of which were co-observed on eBOSS plates. DR16 has no new data from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey (or the MaNGA Stellar Library "MaStar"). Within the standard model of hierarchical galaxy formation in a {\Lambda}CDM Universe, the environment of galaxies is expected to play a key role in driving galaxy formation and evolution. In this paper we investigate whether and how the gas metallicity and the star formation surface density ({\Sigma}_SFR) depend on galaxy environment. To this end we analyse a sample of 1162 local, star-forming galaxies from the galaxy survey Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA). Generally, both parameters do not show any significant dependence on environment. However, in agreement with previous studies, we find that low-mass satellite galaxies are an exception to this rule. The gas metallicity in these objects increases while their {\Sigma}SFR decreases slightly with environmental density. The present analysis of MaNGA data allows us to extend this to spatially resolved properties. Our study reveals that the gas metallicity gradients of low-mass satellites flatten and their {\Sigma}SFR gradients steepen with increasing environmental density. By extensively exploring a chemical evolution model, we identify two scenarios that are able to explain this pattern: metal-enriched gas accretion or pristine gas inflow with varying accretion timescales. The latter scenario better matches the observed {\Sigma}SFR gradients, and is therefore our preferred solution. In this model, a shorter gas accretion timescale at larger radii is required. This suggests that 'outside-in quenching' governs the star formation processes of low-mass satellite galaxies in dense environments., Comment: 17 pages, 15 figures. MNRAS in press

We have analyzed the emission line properties of 6019 Type II AGN at redshifts between 0.4-0.8 with [OIII] luminosities greater than 3x10^8 Lsun, characteristic of the Type II quasars first identified in population studies by Zakamska et al (2003). The AGN are drawn from the CMASS sample of galaxies with stellar masses greater than 10^11 Msun that were studied as part of the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) and comprise 0.5% of the total population of these galaxies. Individual spectra have low S/N, so the analysis is carried out on stacked spectra in bins of [OIII] luminosity and estimated stellar age. The emission line ratios of the stacks are well fit with simple uniform-density photoionization models with metallicities between solar and twice solar. In the stacks, a number of emission lines are found to have distinct broad components requiring a double Gaussian rather than a single Gaussian fit, indicative of outflowing ionized gas. These are: [OIII]4959, [OIII]5007, [OII]3727,3729 and Halpha$. Higher ionization lines such as [NeIII]3869 and [NeV]3345 are detected in the stacks, but are well fit by single Gaussians. The broad components typically contain a third of the total line flux and have widths of 600 km/s for the oxygen lines and 900 km/s for Halpha. The fraction of the flux in the broad component and its width are independent of [OIII] luminosity, stellar age, radio and mid-IR luminosity. The late assembly of massive galaxies is thought to be dominated by stellar accretion in their outskirts (beyond 2 effective radii Re) due to dry, minor galaxy mergers. We use observations of 1010 passive early-type galaxies (ETGs) within z<0.15 from SDSS IV MaNGA to search for evidence of this accretion. The outputs from the stellar population fitting codes FIREFLY, pPXF, and Prospector are compared to control for systematic errors in stellar metallicity (Z) estimation. We find that the average radial logZ/Zsun profiles of ETGs in various stellar mass (M) bins are not linear. As a result, these profiles are poorly characterized by a single gradient value, explaining why weak trends reported in previous work can be difficult to interpret. Instead, we examine the full radial extent of stellar metallicity profiles and find them to flatten in the outskirts of M>10^{11}Msun ETGs. This is a signature of stellar accretion. Based on a toy model for stellar metallicity profiles, we infer the ex-situ stellar mass fraction in ETGs as a function of M and galactocentric radius. We find that ex-situ stars at 2Re make up 20% of the projected stellar mass of M<10^{10.5}Msun ETGs, rising up to 80% for M>10^{11.5}Msun ETGs., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 13 pages, 6 figures. The formation of globular clusters (GC), with their multiple stellar generations, is still an unsolved puzzle. Thus, interest is rising on the possibility to detect their precursors at high redshift, hence directly witnessing their formation. A simple set of assumptions are empirically justified and then used to predict how many such precursors formed between redshift 3 and 10 could actually be detected by the NIRCam instrument on board of JWST. It is shown that the near power-law shape of the rest-frame UV continuum of young globular cluster precursors (GCP) implies that both colours and luminosities in NIRCam long-wavelength passbands depend remarkably weakly on formation redshift. Thus, the predicted number counts depend only little on the actual formation redshifts in the mentioned range, with the exception of the bluest passbands for which counts can be strongly suppressed by intergalactic absorption along the line of sight. Instead, counts depend strongly on the actual mass of GCPs, in such a way that one NIRCam pointing should detect of the order of 10 GCPs to mag$\sim 30$ if their mass distribution was the same of today GCs, or over 1,000 if their mass was 10 times higher. Therefore, GCP number counts will set fairly tight constraints on the initial mass of GCs. An encouraging agreement with the number density of candidate GCPs at $z=6-8$, revealed by the Hubble Frontier Fields (HFF) program, suggests that their initial mass could be at least 4 times higher than that of their local descendants if all were to end up as GCs., Comment: MNRAS accepted

We use a sample of ~3000 galaxies from the MaNGA MPL-7 internal data release to study the alpha abundance distribution within low-redshift galaxies. We use the Lick index ratio Mgb/ as an alpha abundance indicator to study relationships between the alpha abundance distribution and galaxy properties such as effective stellar velocity dispersion within 0.3 effective radii (sigma_*), galaxy environment, and dark matter halo formation time (z_f). We find that (1) all galaxies show a tight correlation between Mgb/ and sigma_*; (2) `old' (H_beta < 3) low-sigma_* galaxies in high local density environment and inner regions within galaxy groups are enhanced in Mgb/, while `young' (H_beta>3) galaxies and high-mass galaxies show no or less environmental dependence; (3) `old' galaxies with high-z_f show enhanced Mgb/ over low- and medium-z_f; (4) Mgb/ gradients are close to zero and show dependence on sigma_* but no obvious dependence on the environment or z_f. Our study indicates that stellar velocity dispersion or galaxy mass is the main parameter driving the Mgb/ enhancement, although environments appear to have modest effects, particularly for low- and medium-mass galaxies., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) is acquiring integral-field spectroscopy for the largest sample of galaxies to date. By 2020, the MaNGA Survey --- one of three core programs in the fourth-generation Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-IV) --- will have observed a statistically representative sample of 10$^4$ galaxies in the local Universe ($z\lesssim0.15$). In addition to a robust data-reduction pipeline (DRP), MaNGA has developed a data-analysis pipeline (DAP) that provides higher-level data products. To accompany the first public release of its code base and data products, we provide an overview of the MaNGA DAP, including its software design, workflow, measurement procedures and algorithms, performance, and output data model. In conjunction with our companion paper Belfiore et al., we also assess the DAP output provided for 4718 observations of 4648 unique galaxies in the recent SDSS Data Release 15 (DR15). These analysis products focus on measurements that are close to the data and require minimal model-based assumptions. Namely, we provide stellar kinematics (velocity and velocity dispersion), emission-line properties (kinematics, fluxes, and equivalent widths), and spectral indices (e.g., D4000 and the Lick indices). We find that the DAP provides robust measurements and errors for the vast majority ($>$99%) of analyzed spectra. We summarize assessments of the precision and accuracy of our measurements as a function of signal-to-noise, and provide specific guidance to users regarding the limitations of the data. Twenty years have passed since first light for the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Here, we release data taken by the fourth phase of SDSS (SDSS-IV) across its first three years of operation (July 2014-July 2017). This is the third data release for SDSS-IV, and the fifteenth from SDSS (Data Release Fifteen; DR15). New data come from MaNGA - we release 4824 datacubes, as well as the first stellar spectra in the MaNGA Stellar Library (MaStar), the first set of survey-supported analysis products (e.g. stellar and gas kinematics, emission line, and other maps) from the MaNGA Data Analysis Pipeline (DAP), and a new data visualisation and access tool we call "Marvin". The next data release, DR16, will include new data from both APOGEE-2 and eBOSS; those surveys release no new data here, but we document updates and corrections to their data processing pipelines. The release is cumulative; it also includes the most recent reductions and calibrations of all data taken by SDSS since first light. In this paper we describe the location and format of the data and tools and cite technical references describing how it was obtained and processed. The SDSS website (www.sdss.org) has also been updated, providing links to data downloads, tutorials and examples of data use. We present the first release of the MaNGA Stellar Library (MaStar), which is a large, well-calibrated, high-quality empirical library covering the wavelength range of 3,622-10,354A at a resolving power of R~1800. The spectra were obtained using the same instrument as used by the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) project, by piggybacking on the SDSS-IV/APOGEE-2N observations. Compared to previous empirical libraries, the MaStar library will have a higher number of stars and a more comprehensive stellar-parameter coverage, especially of cool dwarfs, low-metallicity stars, and stars with different [alpha/Fe], achieved by a sophisticated target selection strategy that takes advantage of stellar-parameter catalogs from the literature. This empirical library will provide a new basis for stellar population synthesis, and is particularly well-suited for stellar-population analysis of MaNGA galaxies. The first version of the library contains 8646 high-quality per-visit spectra for 3321 unique stars. Compared to photometry, the relative flux calibration of the library is accurate to 3.9% in g-r, 2.7% in r-i, and 2.2% in i-z. The data are released as part of Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 15. Chemical enrichment signatures strongly constrain galaxy formation and evolution, and a detailed understanding of abundance patterns provides clues regarding the nucleosynthetic production pathways of elements. Using the SDSS-IV MaNGA IFU survey, we study radial gradients of chemical element abundances in detail. We use stacked spectra out to 1 Re of 366 early-type galaxies with masses 9.9 - 10.8 log $M/M_{\odot}$ to probe the abundances of the elements C, N, Na, Mg, Ca, and Ti, relative to the abundance of Fe, by fitting stellar population models to a combination of Lick absorption indices. We find that C, Mg, and Ti trace each other both as a function of galaxy radius and galaxy mass. These similar C and Mg abundances within and across galaxies set a lower limit for star-formation timescales. Conversely, N and Ca are generally offset to lower abundances. The under-abundance of Ca compared to Mg implies delayed enrichment of Ca through Type Ia supernovae, whereas the correlated behaviour of Ti and the lighter $\alpha$ elements, C and Mg, suggest contributions to Ti from Type II supernovae. We obtain shallow radial gradients in [Mg/Fe], [C/Fe], and [Ti/Fe], meaning that these inferences are independent of radius. However, we measure strong negative radial gradients for [N/Fe] and [Na/Fe], of up to $-0.25\pm0.05$ and $-0.29\pm0.02$ dex/Re respectively. These gradients become shallower with decreasing galaxy mass. We find that N and Na abundances increase more steeply with velocity dispersion within galaxies than globally, while the other elements show the same relation locally and globally. This implies that the high Na and N abundances found in massive early type galaxies are generated by internal processes within galaxies. These are strongly correlated with the total metallicity, suggesting metallicity-dependent Na enrichment, and secondary N production in massive early-type galaxies., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables. Using stellar population models, we predicted that the Dark Energy Survey (DES) - due to its special combination of area (5000 deg. sq.) and depth ($i = 24.3$) - would be in the position to detect massive ($\gtrsim 10^{11}$ M$_{\odot}$) galaxies at $z \sim 4$. We confront those theoretical calculations with the first $\sim 150$ deg. sq. of DES data reaching nominal depth. From a catalogue containing $\sim 5$ million sources, $\sim26000$ were found to have observed-frame $g-r$ vs $r-i$ colours within the locus predicted for $z \sim 4$ massive galaxies. We further removed contamination by stars and artefacts, obtaining 606 galaxies lining up by the model selection box. We obtained their photometric redshifts and physical properties by fitting model templates spanning a wide range of star formation histories, reddening and redshift. Key to constrain the models is the addition, to the optical DES bands $g$, $r$, $i$, $z$, and $Y$, of near-IR $J$, $H$, $K_{s}$ data from the Vista Hemisphere Survey. We further applied several quality cuts to the fitting results, including goodness of fit and a unimodal redshift probability distribution. We finally select 233 candidates whose photometric redshift probability distribution function peaks around $z\sim4$, have high stellar masses ($\log($M$^{*}$/M$_{\odot})\sim 11.7$ for a Salpeter IMF) and ages around 0.1 Gyr, i.e. formation redshift around 5. These properties match those of the progenitors of the most massive galaxies in the local universe. This is an ideal sample for spectroscopic follow-up to select the fraction of galaxies which is truly at high redshift. Star-forming galaxies can in principle be transformed into passive systems by a multitude of processes that quench star formation, such as the halting of gas accretion (starvation) or the rapid removal of gas in AGN-driven outflows. However, it remains unclear which processes are the most significant, primary drivers of the SF-passive bimodality. We address this key issue in galaxy evolution by studying the chemical properties of 80,000 local galaxies in SDSS DR7. In order to distinguish between different quenching mechanisms, we analyse the stellar metallicities of star-forming, green valley and passive galaxies. We find that the significant difference in stellar metallicity between passive galaxies and their star-forming progenitors implies that for galaxies at all masses, quenching must have involved an extended phase of starvation. However, some form of gas ejection also has to be introduced into our models to best match the observed properties of local passive galaxies, indicating that, while starvation is likely to be the prerequisite for quenching, it is the combination of starvation and outflows that is responsible for quenching the majority of galaxies. Closed-box models indicate that the duration of the quenching phase is 2-3 Gyr, with an $e$-folding time of 2-4 Gyr, after which further star formation is prevented by an ejective/heating mode. Alternatively, leaky-box models find a longer duration for the quenching phase of 5-7 Gyr and an $e$-folding time of $\sim$1 Gyr, with outflows becoming increasingly important with decreasing stellar mass. Finally, our analysis of local green valley galaxies indicates that quenching is slower in the local Universe than at high-redshift., Comment: 32 pages, 20 figures, 1 table. We study the origin and cosmic evolution of the mass-metallicity relation (MZR) in star-forming galaxies based on a full, numerical chemical evolution model. The model was designed to match the local MZRs for both gas and stars simultaneously. This is achieved by invoking a time-dependent metal enrichment process which assumes either a time-dependent metal outflow with larger metal loading factors in galactic winds at early times, or a time-dependent Initial Mass Function (IMF) with steeper slopes at early times. We compare the predictions from this model with data sets covering redshifts 0

MaNGA provides the opportunity to make precise spatially resolved measurements of the IMF slope in galaxies owing to its unique combination of spatial resolution, wavelength coverage and sample size. We derive radial gradients in age, element abundances and IMF slope analysing optical and near-infrared absorption features from stacked spectra out to the half-light radius of 366 early-type galaxies with masses $9.9 - 10.8\;\log M/M_{\odot}$. We find flat gradients in age and [$\alpha$/Fe] ratio, as well as negative gradients in metallicity, consistent with the literature. We further derive significant negative gradients in the [Na/Fe] ratio with galaxy centres being well enhanced in Na abundance by up to 0.5 dex. Finally, we find a gradient in IMF slope with a bottom-heavy IMF in the centre (typical mass excess factor of 1.5) and a Milky Way-type IMF at the half-light radius. This pattern is mass-dependent with the lowest mass galaxies in our sample featuring only a shallow gradient around a Milky Way IMF. Our results imply the local IMF-$\sigma$ relation within galaxies to be even steeper than the global relation and hint towards the local metallicity being the dominating factor behind the IMF variations. We also employ different stellar population models in our analysis and show that a radial IMF gradient is found independently of the stellar population model used. We exploit stellar population models of absorption line indices in the ultraviolet (from 2000 - 3200 Angstrom) to study the spectra of massive galaxies. Our central aim is to investigate the occurrence at high-redshift of the UV upturn, i.e. the increased UV emission due to old stars observed in massive galaxies and spiral bulges in the local Universe. We use a large (~275,000) sample of z~0.6 massive (log M*/Msun > 11.5) galaxies using both individual spectra and stacks and employ a suite of models including a UV contribution from old populations, spanning various effective temperatures, fuel consumptions and metallicities. We find that a subset of our indices, Mg I, Fe I, and BL3096, are able to differentiate between old and young UV ages. We find evidence for old stars contributing to the UV in massive galaxies, rather than star formation. The data favour models with low/medium upturn temperatures (10,000 - 25,000K) consistent with local galaxies, depending on the assumed metallicity, and with a larger fuel (f ~ 0.065 Msun). Models with one typical temperature are favoured over models with a temperature range, which would be typical of an extended horizontal branch. Old UV-bright populations are found in the whole galaxy sample (~92%), with a mass fraction peaking around 20-30%. Upturn galaxies are massive and have redder colours, in agreement with findings in the local Universe. We find that the upturn phenomenon appears at z~1 and its frequency increases towards lower redshift, as expected by stellar evolution of low mass stars. In our previous work, we found that only two scenarios are capable of reproducing the observed integrated mass-metallicity relations for the gas and stellar components of local star-forming galaxies simultaneously. One scenario invokes a time-dependent metal outflow loading factor with stronger outflows at early times. The other scenario uses a time-dependent IMF slope with a steeper IMF at early times. In this work, we extend our study to investigate the radial profile of gas and stellar metallicity in local star-forming galaxies using spatially resolved spectroscopic data from the SDSS-IV MaNGA survey. We find that most galaxies show negative gradients in both gas and stellar metallicity with steeper gradients in stellar metallicity. The stellar metallicity gradient tend to be mass dependent with steeper gradients in more massive galaxies while no clear mass dependence is found for the gas metallicity gradient. Then we compare the observations with the predictions from a chemical evolution model of the radial profiles of gas and stellar metallicities. We confirm that the two scenarios proposed in our previous work are also required to explain the metallicity gradients. Based on these two scenarios we successfully reproduce the radial profiles of gas metallicity, stellar metallicity, stellar mass surface density, and star formation rate (SFR) surface density simultaneously. The origin of the negative gradient in stellar metallicity turns out to be driven by either radially dependent metal outflow or IMF slope. The average stellar mass (Mstar) of high-mass galaxies (Mstar > 3e11 Msun) is expected to grow by ~30% since z~1, largely through ongoing mergers that are also invoked to explain the observed increase in galaxy sizes. Direct evidence for the corresponding growth in stellar mass has been elusive, however, in part because the volumes sampled by previous redshift surveys have been too small to yield reliable statistics. In this work, we make use of the Stripe 82 Massive Galaxy Catalog to build a mass-limited sample of 41,770 galaxies (Mstar > 1.6e11) with optical to near-IR photometry and a large fraction (>55%) of spectroscopic redshifts. Our sample spans 139 square degrees, significantly larger than most previous efforts. After accounting for a number of potential systematic errors, including the effects of Mstar scatter, we measure galaxy stellar mass functions over 0.3 < z < 0.65 and detect no growth in the typical Mstar of massive galaxies with an uncertainty of 9%. This confidence level is dominated by uncertainties in the star formation history assumed for Mstar estimates, although our inability to characterize low surface-brightness outskirts may be the most important limitation of our study. Even among these high-mass galaxies, we find evidence for differential evolution when splitting the sample by recent star formation (SF) activity. While low-SF systems appear to become completely passive, we find a mostly sub-dominant population of galaxies with residual, but low rates of star formation (~1 Msun/yr) number density does not evolve. Interestingly, these galaxies become more prominent at higher Mstar, representing ~10% of all galaxies at Mstar ~ 1e12 Msun and perhaps dominating at even larger masses., Comment: Accepted in ApJ

We determine the stellar population properties - age, metallicity, dust reddening, stellar mass and the star formation history - for all spectra classified as galaxies that were published by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS data release 14) and by the DEEP2 (data release 4) galaxy surveys. We perform full spectral fitting on individual spectra, making use of high spectral resolution stellar population models. Calculations are carried out for several choices of the model input, including three stellar initial mass functions and three input stellar libraries to the models. We study the accuracy of parameter derivation, in particular the stellar mass, as a function of the signal-to-noise of the galaxy spectra. We find that at low redshift, a signal to noise ratio per pixel around 20 (5) allows a statistical accuracy on $\log_{10}(M^{*}/M_{\odot})$ of 0.2 (0.4) dex, for the Chabrier IMF. For the first time, we study DEEP2 galaxies selected by their \OII luminosity in the redshift range $0.83

We present a new spectral fitting code, Firefly, for deriving the stellar population properties of stellar systems. Firefly is a chi-squared minimisation fitting code that fits combinations of single-burst stellar population models to spectroscopic data, following an iterative best-fitting process controlled by the Bayesian Information Criterion. No priors are applied, rather all solutions within a statistical cut are retained with their weight. Moreover, no additive or multiplicative polynomia are employed to adjust the spectral shape. This fitting freedom is envisaged in order to map out the effect of intrinsic spectral energy distribution (SED) degeneracies, such as age, metallicity, dust reddening on galaxy properties, and to quantify the effect of varying input model components on such properties. Dust attenuation is included using a new procedure, which was tested on Integral Field Spectroscopic (IFS) data in a previous paper. The fitting method is extensively tested with a comprehensive suite of mock galaxies, real galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and Milky Way globular clusters. We also assess the robustness of the derived properties as a function of signal-to-noise ratio and adopted wavelength range. We show that \FF\ is able to recover age, metallicity, stellar mass and even the star formation history remarkably well down to a $S/N\sim5$, for moderately dusty systems. We investigate the mass-metallicity relations for the gaseous (MZRgas) and stellar components (MZRstar) of local star-forming galaxies based on a representative sample from SDSS DR12. The mass-weighted average stellar metallicities are systematically lower than the gas metallicities. This difference in metallicity increases toward galaxies with lower masses and reaches 0.4-0.8 dex at 10^9 Msun (depending on the gas metallicity calibration). As a result, the MZRstar is much steeper than the MZRgas. The much lower metallicities in stars compared to the gas in low mass galaxies implies dramatic metallicity evolution with suppressed metal enrichment at early times. The aim of this paper is to explain the observed large difference in gas and stellar metallicity and to infer the origin of the mass-metallicity relations. To this end we develop a galactic chemical evolution model accounting for star formation, gas inflow and outflow. By combining the observed mass-metallicity relation for both gas and stellar components to constrain the models, we find that only two scenarios are able to reproduce the observations. Either strong metal outflow or a steep IMF slope at early epochs of galaxy evolution is needed. Based on these two scenarios, for the first time we successfully reproduce the observed MZRgas and MZRstar simultaneously, together with other independent observational constraints in the local universe. Our model also naturally reproduces the flattening of the MZRgas at the high mass end leaving the MZRstar intact, as seen in observational data., Comment: 25 pages, 23 figures, and 5 tables.
