Abstract

Este artigo realiza um levantamento sobre a pesquisa em comunicação que articula a temática jornalismo independente e alternativo, a fim de observar conceitos, tipos de estudo e técnicas de pesquisa mais utilizados. Para alcançarmos os objetivos, mapeou-se as pesquisas apresentadas nos Encontros anuais da Associação Nacional dos Programas de Pós-Graduação em Comunicação (Compós) e na base de dados da Associação Brasileira de Pesquisadores em Jornalismo (SBPJor). O recorte temporal para coleta dos dados compreende os anos de 2016 a 2021. Ademais, utilizou-se da pesquisa bibliográfica como técnica no intuito de conhecer o estado da arte. Com este estudo foi possível mensurar como autores têm dificuldades em conceituar e diferenciar o jornalismo independente e alternativo. Por fim, é possível afirmar que a maioria dos artigos coletados é baseada em estudos empíricos e nem sempre se detém em conceituar o jornalismo independente e alternativo, mas sim utilizam iniciativas assim denominadas como objetos de estudos.

2. Uranium isotopes of aeolian dust deposited in northern Tibetan Plateau glaciers: Implications for tracing aeolian dust provenance

Abstract

Asian dust comprises a large portion of the northern hemisphere atmospheric dust load, thereby exerting substantial influence on the Earth's climate, global biogeochemistry and hydrological cycle through accelerated snow and ice melt. Dust deposited on alpine glaciers encodes information on broad scale atmospheric-environmental processes. The (234U/238U) values of dust fine particulates can reflect the comminuting time and intermediate processes; thus, it provides a new method for the provenance of aeolian dust in the glacial snowpack/cryoconite. Here we present results from a comprehensive survey of uranium isotopic concentrations in dust collected from cryoconites on the glaciers of the northern Tibetan Plateau (TP). These results indicate significant spatial heterogeneity in the (234U/238U) values associated with snowpack/cryoconite dust over a broad range of glaciers in the northern TP. The values of the (234U/238U) ratio in the glaciers of western Qilian Mountains (Qiyi Glacier, Shiyi Glacier, Laohugou Glacier No.12) were the highest, followed by the Tanggula (Dunkemadi Glacier) and Kunlun Mountains (Yuzhufeng Glacier), whereas these values were the lowest in the eastern Qilian Mountains (Jingyangling Snowpack, Dabanshan Snowpack, Lenglongling Glacier). By including the analysis of Sr-Nd isotopic compositions, we find the spatial isotopic distribution reflects a combination of local dust, which is associated with short comminuting times, and dust transported over long ranges. Meteorological data indicate that the dust production in the west and north TP, Alxa arid lands and Gobi Deserts, may have a significant impact on the TP glaciers. Moreover, U-Sr-Nd isotopic composition and end-member mixing models (EMMA) were used in our study to find out the relative contribution of distinct Asian dust sources to the dust budget in the TP glaciers. The results reveal that snowpack/cryoconite dust is derived from both local sources (low comminution signatures) as well as other dust sources in the Asian region. Our study demonstrates the potential of U isotope composition as a dust tracing method. In particular, by investigating this composition on dust collected from glacier snowpack and cryoconite holes, we arrive at a map of the distribution characteristics of (234U/238U) values in different regions of the TP. Our study is the first to deploy uranium comminution age for Tibetan dust source tracing, and the results are important to elucidate the multiple origins and dynamics of dust in the Tibetan Plateau.

Abstract

Este artigo busca discutir o infotenimento no contexto do telejornalismo maranhense e tem como a intenção compreender como funciona o processo. A metodologia utilizada foi a entrevista semiestruturada. O corpus se constitui por seis profissionais entrevistados, todos jornalistas. Três da tv Difusora, afiliada do Sistema Brasileiro de Televisão e três da tv Mirante, afiliada da Rede Globo de Televisão, ambas no estado do Maranhão. As entrevistas foram realizadas de forma presencial, no ano de 2022. Concluímos, que os telejornais analisados fazem uso do infotenimento de maneira coerente com as linhas editoriais da emissora e cumprem os requisitos de informar. Percebemos, também, que fatores como a função social do jornalismo, os procedimentos de marketing, as linhas editoriais como as empresas estão inseridas, ou o estilo do programa analisado, e a autonomia da equipe que produziu os telejornais devem ser levados em conta quando tratar da temática. Acreditamos que há reflexões necessárias a se fazer sobre quais caminhos o telejornalismo trilhará nos próximos anos.

[por] O artigo visa analisar os trabalhos vencedores do Prêmio Adelmo Genro Filho na categoria Iniciação Científica e levantar o perfil das/dos ganhadoras/es. Considerando que a premiação reconhece pesquisas que contribuem para o campo do Jornalismo e valoriza a atuação das/os pesquisadoras/es, nos interessa identificar aspectos que representam a iniciação científica e graduação. Utilizamos a Análise de Conteúdo para categorizar os 23 trabalhos que receberam prêmio principal e menção honrosa na categoria em questão, entre 2010 e 2020. Para delimitar o perfil de quem venceu, aplicamos um questionário. Os resultados indicam que a abordagem qualitativa e a análise de conteúdo predominam na metodologia, com destaque para os jornais tradicionais como objeto de estudo. Entre as/os ganhadoras/es, quem participava de grupo de pesquisa e/ou foi bolsista de iniciação científica tende a ingressar mais na pós-graduação. [en] The article aims to analyze the winning works of the Adelmo Genro Filho Award in the Scientific Initiation categor y and raise the profile of the winners. Considering that the award recognizes research that contributes to the Journalism field and values the work of researchers, we are interested in identifying aspects that represent scientific initiation and graduation. We used Content Analysis to categorize the 23 works that received the main award and honorable mention in the categor y in question, between 2010 and 2020. To define the profile of who won, we applied a questionnaire. The results indicate that the qualitative approach and content analysis predominate in the methodology, with emphasis on traditional newspapers as the object of study. Among the winners, those who participated in a research group and/or received a scientific initiation scholarship tend to enter more into graduate studies.

5. Exact linearity of the macroscopic Hall current response in infinitely extended gapped fermion systems

Abstract

We consider an infinitely extended system of fermions on a $d$-dimensional lattice with (magnetic) translation-invariant short-range interactions. We further assume that the system has a unique gapped ground state. Physically, this is a model for the bulk of a generic topological insulator at zero temperature, and we are interested in the current response of such a system to a constant external electric field. Using the non-equilibrium almost-stationary states (NEASS) approach, we prove that the longitudinal current density induced by a constant electric field of strength $\varepsilon$ is of order $\mathcal{O}(\varepsilon^\infty)$, i.e. the system is an insulator in the usual sense. For the Hall current density we show instead that it is linear in $\varepsilon$ up to terms of order $\mathcal{O}(\varepsilon^\infty)$. The proportionality factor $\sigma_\mathrm{H}$ is by definition the Hall conductivity, and we show that it is given by a generalization of the well known double commutator formula to interacting systems. As a by-product of our results, we find that the Hall conductivity is constant within gapped phases, and that for $d=2$ the relevant observable that "measures" the Hall conductivity in experiments, the Hall conductance, not only agrees with $\sigma_H$ in expectation up to $\mathcal{O}(\varepsilon^\infty)$, but also has vanishing variance. A notable difference to several existing results on the current response in interacting fermion systems is that we consider a macroscopic system exposed to a small constant electric field, rather than to a small voltage drop., Comment: Improved version of Corollary 5.6

6. Fluid flow inside slit-shaped nanopores: the role of surface morphology at the molecular scale

Abstract

Non-equilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) simulations of fluid flow have highlighted the peculiarities of nanoscale flows compared to classical fluid mechanics. In particular, boundary conditions can deviate from the no-slip behavior at macroscopic scales due to various factors. In this context, we investigate the influence of surface morphology in slit-shaped nanopores on the fluid flow. We demonstrate that the surface morphology effectively controls the slip length, which approaches zero when the molecular structures of the pore wall and the fluid are matched. Using boundary-driven, energy-conserving NEMD simulations with a pump-like driving mechanism, we examine two types of pore walls--mimicking a crystalline and an amorphous material--that exhibit markedly different surface resistances to flow. The resulting flow velocity profiles are consistent with Hagen-Poiseuille theory for incompressible, Newtonian fluids when adjusted for surface slip. For the two pores, we observe partial slip and no-slip behavior, respectively, which correlate with fluid layering and depletion near the surfaces. However, the confinement of the fluid gives rise to an effective viscosity that varies substantially with the pore width. Analysis of the hydrodynamic permeability shows that the simulated flows are in the Darcy regime. Additionally, the thermal isolation of the flow causes a linear increase in fluid temperature along the flow, which we relate to strong viscous dissipation and heat convection, utilizing conservation laws of fluid mechanics. Our findings underscore the need for molecular-scale modeling to accurately capture the fluid dynamics near boundaries and in nanoporous materials, where macroscopic models may not be applicable.

Abstract

Este trabalho analisou as publicações na seção Fato ou Fake, localizada na página do G1. Para isso, foram criadas 9 categorias de análises: profilaxia e cura do coronavírus, vacina, xenofobia, vídeos verdadeiros no contexto falso, teoria de que o vírus foi previsto no passado, político, pânico, isolamento social e outros. A partir das análises, concluiu-se que 86 notícias foram encontradas em um período de 60 dias. Além disso, percebe-se que embora os recursos tecnológicos e a internet facilitam sobremaneira o acesso a todos os tipos de informação, a checagem desta é cada vez mais necessária. Essa situação reforça ainda mais a importância do jornalista e o papel do Gatekeeper.

Para esto, investiga a los afiliados de Rede Globo de Televisão y realiza entrevistas con periodistas de televisión. El material tiene como método la revisión y mapeo de la literatura y se basa en el concepto de Campo, Bourdieu (1983, 1989). Se concluye que el campo de las noticias de televisión para atraer más al público permitió la hibridación y la “entrada” del público de una manera más expresiva pero enmascarada. El tamiz aún es del periodista. Él es quien califica y es él quien decide quién participará en la televisión deseada. [en] This paper analyzes the hybridization of television journalism with cyberjournalism, studying audience participation through the use of applications. For this, it investigates the affiliates of Rede Globo de Televisão and conducts inter view with television journalists. The material has as method literature review and mapping and is based on the concept of Campo, Bourdieu (1983, 1989). It is concluded that the television news field to at tract the audience more allowed the hybridization and the “entrance” of the audience in a more expressive way but in a masked way. The sieve is still from the journalist. He is the one who qualifies and it is he who decides who will or will not participate in the desired television.

Abstract

Este trabalho analisa como o Jornal Nacional utiliza o Twitter para promover seu conteúdo televisivo. Verificou-se o perfil no Twitter do programa durante 51 dias de 2019, totalizando 685 tweets. O conteúdo analisado se refere às publicações interativas direcionadas para os internautas nas redes sociais e aos conteúdos transportados da televisão. A pesquisa é baseada na metodologia da Análise de Conteúdo (AC). Os resultados apontam que a presença do Jornal Nacional no Twitter é um efeito da migração de audiência e que a participação do telejornal nas redes sociais fortalece a sua presença em telas diversas.

Abstract

The gravitational wave GW170817 from a binary neutron star merger and the simultaneous electromagnetic detection of the GRB170817A by Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope, opened a new era in the multi-messenger astronomy. Furthermore, the GRBs (Gamma-Ray Bursts) and the mysterious FRBs (Fast Radio Bursts) have sparked interest in the development of new detectors and telescopes dedicated to the time-domain astronomy across the electromagnetic spectrum. Time-domain astronomy aims to acquire fast astronomical bursts in temporal range between a few seconds down to 1 ns. Fast InfraRed Bursts (FIRBs) have been relatively understudied, often due to the lack of appropriate tools for observation and analysis. In this scientific scenario, the present contribution proposes a new detection system for ground-based reflecting telescopes working in the mid-infrared (mid-IR) range to search for astronomical FIRBs. Experience developed in the diagnostics for lepton circular accelerators can be used to design temporal devices for astronomy. Longitudinal diagnostic instruments acquire bunch-by-bunch particle shifts in the direction of flight, that is equivalent to temporal. Transverse device integrates the beam signal in the horizontal and vertical coordinates, as standard telescopes. The proposed instrument aims to work in temporal mode. Feasibility study tests have been carried out at SINBAD, infrared beam line of DAFNE, the $e^+e^-$ collider of INFN. SINBAD releases pulsed infrared synchrotron light with 2.7 ns separation. The frontend detector system has been evaluated to detect temporal fast infrared signals with 2-12 micron wavelengths and 1 ns rise times. 11. Writing Order Recovery in Complex and Long Static Handwriting

Abstract

The order in which the trajectory is executed is a powerful source of information for recognizers. However, there is still no general approach for recovering the trajectory of complex and long handwriting from static images. Complex specimens can result in multiple pen-downs and in a high number of trajectory crossings yielding agglomerations of pixels (also known as clusters). While the scientific literature describes a wide range of approaches for recovering the writing order in handwriting, these approaches nevertheless lack a common evaluation metric. In this paper, we introduce a new system to estimate the order recovery of thinned static trajectories, which allows to effectively resolve the clusters and select the order of the executed pen-downs. We evaluate how knowing the starting points of the pen-downs affects the quality of the recovered writing. Once the stability and sensitivity of the system is analyzed, we describe a series of experiments with three publicly available databases, showing competitive results in all cases. We expect the proposed system, whose code is made publicly available to the research community, to reduce potential confusion when the order of complex trajectories are recovered, and this will in turn make the trajectories recovered to be viable for further applications, such as velocity estimation.

Abstract

Este artigo quer entender, a partir da perspectiva do telejornalista, qual o papel do público que envia vídeos para a redação na rotina do veículo. O objeto de análise foi o Jornal Nacional, da Rede Globo de Televisão. Metodologicamente foi mapeada toda a produção do telejornal no ano de 2016 e encontrados 5901 materiais informativos. Destes, 239 continham vídeos amadores. As regiões mais participativas do país, por meio do envio de vídeo amador, foram: Centro-Oeste, Sudeste, Nordeste, Norte e Sul. Esse diagnóstico levou a escolha dos entrevistados. Ao todo foram entrevistados oito telejornalistas. Concluiu-se que embora o profissional entenda a importância da participação do público — ele reconhece a produção amadora como uma fonte diferenciada— esta não chega a ser vista como parte da produção, ou seja, o amador não chega a ser entendido como um colaborador da rotina propriamente dito. Nas falas dos entrevistados é possível ver que o telejornalista utiliza da ideologia profissional para reafirmar a importância da profissão no contexto de jornalismo participativo.

16. SM-DTW: Stability Modulated Dynamic Time Warping for signature verification

Abstract

Building upon findings in computational model of handwriting learning and execution, we introduce the concept of stability to explain the difference between the actual movements performed during multiple execution of the subject's signature, and conjecture that the most stable parts of the signature should play a paramount role in evaluating the similarity between a questioned signature and the reference ones during signature verification. We then introduce the Stability Modulated Dynamic Time Warping algorithm for incorporating the stability regions, i.e. the most similar parts between two signatures, into the distance measure between a pair of signatures computed by the Dynamic Time Warping for signature verification. Experiments were conducted on two datasets largely adopted for performance evaluation. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm improves the performance of the baseline system and compares favourably with other top performing signature verification systems.

17. Dissecting Human Anatomy Learning Process through Anatomical Education with Augmented Reality: 'AEducAR 2.0,' an Updated Interdisciplinary Study

Abstract

Anatomical education is pivotal for medical students, and innovative technologies like augmented reality (AR) are transforming the field. This study aimed to enhance the interactive features of the "AEducAR" prototype, an AR tool developed by the University of Bologna, and explore its impact on human anatomy learning process in 130 second-year medical students at the International School of Medicine and Surgery of the University of Bologna. An interdisciplinary team of anatomists, maxillofacial surgeons, biomedical engineers, and educational scientists collaborated to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the study's objectives. Students used the updated version of "AEducAR," named "AEducAR 2.0," to study three anatomical topics, specifically the orbit zone, facial bones, and mimic muscles. "AEducAR 2.0" offered two learning activities: one explorative and one interactive. Following each activity, students took a test to assess learning outcomes. Students also completed an anonymous questionnaire to provide background information and offer their perceptions of the activity. Additionally, 10 students participated in interviews for further insights. The results demonstrated that "AEducAR 2.0" effectively facilitated learning and students' engagement. Students totalized high scores in both quizzes and declared to have appreciated the interactive features that were implemented. Moreover, interviews shed light on the interesting topic of blended learning. In particular, the present study suggests that incorporating AR into medical education alongside traditional methods might prove advantageous for students' academic and future professional endeavors. In this light, this study contributes to the growing research emphasizing the potential role of AR in shaping the future of medical education.

Abstract

JEM--EUSO is an international program for the development of space-based Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Ray observatories. The program consists of a series of missions which are either under development or in the data analysis phase. All instruments are based on a wide-field-of-view telescope, which operates in the near-UV range, designed to detect the fluorescence light emitted by extensive air showers in the atmosphere. We describe the simulation software ESAFin the framework of the JEM--EUSO program and explain the physical assumptions used. We present here the implementation of the JEM--EUSO, POEMMA, K--EUSO, TUS, Mini--EUSO, EUSO--SPB1 and EUSO--TA configurations in ESAF. For the first time ESAF simulation outputs are compared with experimental data.

Abstract

New methods for generating synthetic handwriting images for biometric applications have recently been developed. The temporal evolution of handwriting from childhood to adulthood is usually left unexplored in these works. This paper proposes a novel methodology for including temporal evolution in a handwriting synthesizer by means of simplifying the text trajectory plan and handwriting dynamics. This is achieved through a tailored version of the kinematic theory of rapid human movements and the neuromotor inspired handwriting synthesizer. The realism of the proposed method has been evaluated by comparing the temporal evolution of real and synthetic samples both quantitatively and subjectively. The quantitative test is based on a visual perception algorithm that compares the letter variability and the number of strokes in the real and synthetic handwriting produced at different ages. Abstract

The Extreme Universe Space Observatory on a Super Pressure Balloon 1 (EUSO-SPB1) was launched in 2017 April from Wanaka, New Zealand. The plan of this mission of opportunity on a NASA super pressure balloon test flight was to circle the southern hemisphere. The primary scientific goal was to make the first observations of ultra-high-energy cosmic-ray extensive air showers (EASs) by looking down on the atmosphere with an ultraviolet (UV) fluorescence telescope from suborbital altitude (33~km). After 12~days and 4~hours aloft, the flight was terminated prematurely in the Pacific Ocean. Before the flight, the instrument was tested extensively in the West Desert of Utah, USA, with UV point sources and lasers. The test results indicated that the instrument had sensitivity to EASs of approximately 3 EeV. Simulations of the telescope system, telescope on time, and realized flight trajectory predicted an observation of about 1 event assuming clear sky conditions. The effects of high clouds were estimated to reduce this value by approximately a factor of 2. A manual search and a machine-learning-based search did not find any EAS signals in these data. Abstract

During recent years, there here has been a boom in terms of deep learning use for handwriting analysis and recognition. One main application for handwriting analysis is early detection and diagnosis in the health field. Unfortunately, most real case problems still suffer a scarcity of data, which makes difficult the use of deep learning-based models. To alleviate this problem, some works resort to synthetic data generation. Lately, more works are directed towards guided data synthetic generation, a generation that uses the domain and data knowledge to generate realistic data that can be useful to train deep learning models. In this work, we combine the domain knowledge about the Alzheimer's disease for handwriting and use it for a more guided data generation. Concretely, we have explored the use of in-air movements for synthetic data generation.

Abstract

Mini-EUSO is a wide Field-of-View (FoV, 44$^{\circ}$) telescope currently in operation from a nadia-facing UV-transparent window in the Russian Zvezda module on the International Space Station (ISS). It is the first detector of the JEM-EUSO program deployed on the ISS, launched in August 2019. The main goal of Mini-EUSO is to measure the UV emissions from the ground and atmosphere, using an orbital platform. Mini-EUSO is mainly sensitive in the 290-430 nm bandwidth. Light is focused by a system of two Fresnel lenses of 25 cm diameter each on the Photo- Detector-Module (PDM), which consists of an array of 36 Multi-Anode Photomultiplier Tubes (MAPMTs), for a total of 2304 pixels working in photon counting mode, in three different time resolutions of 2.5 ${\mu}$s, 320 ${\mu}$s, 40.96 ms operation in parallel. In the longest time scale, the data is continuously acquired to monitor the UV emission of the Earth. It is best suited for the observation of ground sources and therefore has been used for the observational campaigns of the Mini-EUSO. In this contribution, we present the assembled UV flasher, the operation of the field campaign and the analysis of the obtained data. The result is compared with the overall efficiency computed from the expectations which takes into account the atmospheric attenuation and the parameterization of different effects such as the optics efficiency, the MAPMT detection efficiency, BG3 filter transmittance and the transparency of the ISS window.

39. Results and performance of the Mini-EUSO telescope on board the ISS

Abstract

Mini-EUSO is a telescope observing the Earth in the ultraviolet band (290-430 nm) since 2019, through a nadir-facing UV-transparent window in the Russian Zvezda module of the International Space Station. The main camera has an optical system composed of two 25 cm diameter Fresnel lenses and a focal surface consisting of 36 multi-anode photomultiplier tubes, 64 pixels each, for a total of 2304 channels. The instrument has a square field of view with a side of 44 degrees, a spatial resolution of about 6.3 km on the Earth surface and a sampling time of 2.5 microseconds. Mini- EUSO has also two cameras in the near infrared and visible ranges and silicon photomultiplier sensors to complement the UV observations. Mini-EUSO has been designed as a small-size version of the original JEM-EUSO space telescope to demonstrate its observational principle. Mini-EUSO is in fact potentially capable of observing extensive air showers generated by ultra-high-energy cosmic rays with an energy above 10 21 eV and of detecting artificial showers generated with lasers from the ground. Other main scientific objectives of the mission are the study of atmospheric phenomena (transient luminous events such as ELVES and sprites), the observation of meteors and among them the search for interstellar meteors and nuclearites such as strange quark matter. Moreover, Mini-EUSO can map night-time UV Earth emissions, both anthropogenic and natural. Laboratório de Telejornalismo é uma disciplina que exige do acadêmico o exercício da reportagem telejornalista, da pauta à edição de texto. Ensinar essa dinâmica, longe do dia a dia de uma televisão comercial, é um desafio. Este material mostra a experiência em sala de aula da referida disciplina ministrada na Universidade Federal do Maranhão – UFMA e relata a importância do acadêmico em ter o pré-conhecimento relacionado à edição de imagens. Sugere-se, após a realização de análise empírica, que entender a linguagem videográfica anteriormente à pauta para televisão agrega valor ao futuro jornalista, facilita o entendimento deste e também o encaminhamento do material. Abstract Laboratory of TV Journalism is a discipline that requires the exercise of academic television journalist reporting, the agenda for text editing. Teach this Dinamica, away from the day to day commercial television, is a challenge. This material shows the experience in the classroom of the discipline taught at the Federal University of Maranhão - UFMA and the importance of academic reports on having pre-knowledge related to image editing. It is suggested, after conducting empirical analysis, to understand the video language prior to the agenda for adding value to the future television journalist, facilitates the understanding of this and also the referral of material. Abstract

Objetivo: Este estudo se propõe a entender as predileções e comportamentos do leitor do jornal Correio Popular, de Imperatriz (MA), a partir da análise descritiva dos modos de navegação e interações ordenadas pelos internautas que integram os curtidores da fanpage do veículo no Facebook. Método: A pesquisa está estruturada em três pilares metodológicos: estudo descritivo, categorização a partir de estudo qualitativo, e entrevista. O estudo descritivo foi viabilizado por meio da análise dos dados do painel administrativo de acesso restrito aos administradores e gerenciadores da página, que foi liberado para essa pesquisa. O levantamento ocorreu entre os dias 12 de junho a 23 de junho de 2013. A etapa qualitativa prevê análise e categorização dos comentários inseridos na matéria mais comentada no período, a postagem somou 82 posts de leitores. Por último alguns dados são fruto de duas entrevistas, feitas com duas jornalistas que trabalham no jornal e monitoram a página. Resultados: O resultado aponta algumas orientações para uso de fanpages para futuros jornais em formato semelhante. Conclusões: O estudo possibilitou o entendimento de qual o papel das fanpages para os veículos, pelo menos em cidaes pequenas.

Abstract

A diversified dataset is crucial for training a well-generalized supervised computer vision algorithm. However, in the field of microbiology, generation and annotation of a diverse dataset including field-taken images are time consuming, costly, and in some cases impossible. Image to image translation frameworks allow us to diversify the dataset by transferring images from one domain to another. However, most existing image translation techniques require a paired dataset (original image and its corresponding image in the target domain), which poses a significant challenge in collecting such datasets. In addition, the application of these image translation frameworks in microbiology is rarely discussed. In this study, we aim to develop an unpaired GAN-based (Generative Adversarial Network) image to image translation model for microbiological images, and study how it can improve generalization ability of object detection models. In this paper, we present an unpaired and unsupervised image translation model to translate laboratory-taken microbiological images to field images, building upon the recent advances in GAN networks and Perceptual loss function. We propose a novel design for a GAN model, BioGAN, by utilizing Adversarial and Perceptual loss in order to transform high level features of laboratory-taken images into field images, while keeping their spatial features. The contribution of Adversarial and Perceptual loss in the generation of realistic field images were studied. We used the synthetic field images, generated by BioGAN, to train an object-detection framework, and compared the results with those of an object-detection framework trained with laboratory images; this resulted in up to 68.1% and 75.3% improvement on F1-score and mAP, respectively. A proposta deste artigo é destacar a importância da extensão universitária como ferramenta complementar da educação universitária. O recorte tem como foco a descrição da experiência com o projeto "Histórias para Contar", uma proposta implantada pelo Curso de Comunicação Social da Faculdade Estácio de Sá de Campo Grande (MS) na qual alunos e professores partilhavam momentos de leitura e descontração com idosos do asilo São João Bosco, o mais antigo da cidade. As atividades foram proposta como uma tentativa de ampliar a formação humanística do discente.
