Recent theoretical studies suggest that food webs are size-structured with top predators coupling different energy sources, but evidence for this hypothesis is still scarce, especially in highly diverse tropical rivers. Here, we explored the association between body size, trophic position, and the use of allochthonous and autochthonous basal production sources in the Volta Grande rapids of the Xingu River, a major clearwater tributary of the Amazon River, during the period prior to operation of the Belo Monte Hydropower Plant (BMHP). This section of the river contains a maze of channels with rocky shoals that support dozens of endemic fishes, mollusks and other aquatic taxa that may be impacted by flow regulation by the Pimental Dam located upstream. During the low-water season, we surveyed fish, crustaceans, mollusks, sponges, aquatic and terrestrial insects, zooplankton, and basal production sources to obtain tissue samples for analysis of stable isotope ratios of carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N). Biomass of most aquatic organisms appears to be largely supported by riparian vegetation, highlighting the importance of the lateral connectivity between aquatic and terrestrial habitats. Unlike expected, we did not observe a gradual increase in coupling of energy pathways with increasing body size and trophic position. Findings provide a baseline for trophic ecology of this river under the natural flow regime for future impact assessments, and also indicated that more complex food web models, potentially including additional functional traits (e.g., gut length), are needed to describe resource and habitat use in highly diverse tropical ecosystems.

Hyperspectral data encode information from electromagnetic radiation (i.e., color) of any object in the form of a spectral signature; these data can then be used to distinguish among materials or even map whole landscapes. Although hyperspectral data have been mostly used to study landscape ecology, floral diversity and many other applications in the natural sciences, we propose that spectral signatures can be used for rapid assessment of faunal biodiversity, akin to DNA barcoding and metabarcoding. We demonstrate that spectral signatures of individual, live fish specimens can accurately capture species and clade-level differences in fish coloration, specifically among piranhas and pacus (Family Serrasalmidae), fishes with a long history of taxonomic confusion. We analyzed 47 serrasalmid species and could distinguish spectra among different species and clades, with the method sensitive enough to document changes in fish coloration over ontogeny. Herbivorous pacu spectra were more like one another than they were to piranhas; however, our method also documented interspecific variation in pacus that corresponds to cryptic lineages. While spectra do not serve as an alternative to the collection of curated specimens, hyperspectral data of fishes in the field should help clarify which specimens might be unique or undescribed, complementing existing molecular and morphological techniques.

The goal of the present study was to realize an inventory of target fish of the subsistence fishery from Genipauba Village, Santa Barbara do Para, Brazil. The inventory was carried out during local fisheries throughout the main river between March and April 2018. The collections were performed with gillnets of 25 to 40 mm of mesh size, and length variable according to fisherman. The collected specimens were preserved in 10% formaldehyde and posterior wash in running water to preservation in 70% alcohol solution. In the laboratory all fish were identified to the current taxonomic species level, measured in standard length (cm), and in total weight (g), then cataloged in the fish collection of the Aquatic Ecology Group at Federal University of Para (GEA-UFPA). Overall 19 fish species belonging to 13 families and five taxonomic orders were recorded. Most individuals were represented by species (family), the South American silver croaker Plagioscion squamosissimus (Sciaenidae), Yellowfin river pellona Pellona flavipinnis (Pristigasteridae), Mapara Hypophthalmus marginatus (Pimelodidae), Driftwood catfish Trachelyopterus galeatus (Auchenipteridae). Some important species for commercial trade were recorded as well, such as the Goliath catfish Brachyplatystoma filamentosum (Pimelodidae) and the Common snook Centropomus undecimalis (Centropomidae). In spite of the collections consisting of few species, the study is the first inventory of the most common fish species used by riverines from Para River for subsistence.

Niche partitioning occurs among coexisting populations to reduce the effects of competitive exclusion among species of similar niche. The aim of the present study is to verify the trophic niche partitioning and feeding behavior between two mustelids, the Giant otter and the Neotropical otter, through the dry and rainy season hydrologic of the Lower Xingu River. Our results suggest that the diets of both mustelids are composed primarily of fish of the family Anostomidae (Headstanders). Despite extensive niche overlap, our results indicate partitioning is facilitated by differences in niche breadth, with potential implications for conservation of both species in the case of declines in prey abundance and diversity. Both species inhabit an area recently impacted by completion of the Belo Monte Hydropower Plant, resulting in large changes to the hydrologic regime. Thus, our results provide important information for conservation efforts regarding the feeding behavior and co-occurrence of both species, as well as providing a baseline for monitoring future health of these mustelid populations. The present study is the first to test the hypothesis of niche partitioning between these two mustelids outside a protected area in the Amazon.

In recent years, species richness and diversity in aquatic ecosystems has declined as environments are increasingly impacted by anthropic actions. Freshwater prawns are well adapted to survive in a disturbed and heterogeneous environment. For instance, Amazon river prawn (Macrobrachium amazonicum) populations vary in migratory behavior between rivers and estuaries, depending on factors such as dams. However, there is limited information on the influence of environmental conditions on life‐history traits of this species, which we investigate here using two distinct and unconnected aquatic systems, a dammed river and an estuary, in the eastern Brazilian Amazon. The biological characteristics of M. amazonicum populations in the two environments were compared and related to environmental parameters, which differed significant differences between the two environments and between seasons. Dissolved oxygen, precipitation, and temperature varied most significantly with the seasons in both the estuary and river. M. amazonicum prawns in the estuary were larger and heavier than those in the river during rainy periods. The mass–length ratios and condition factor varied significantly between the M. amazonicum populations in the estuary and river, with negative allometric growth (grows faster in length than in weight) predominating in both populations, and condition factor was better in the estuary for males and in the river for females. The relative frequencies of occurrence of the different female maturation stages and the male morphotypes were related to precipitation and turbidity in both environments and also to salinity in the estuary. In these two distinct aquatic systems, the abiotic parameters determined by the seasonal precipitation cycle profoundly influenced the development of this crustacean, despite its ecological plasticity. Overall, the study showed that river damming triggered environmental changes in the freshwater river ecosystem and played a key role in determining the life‐history characteristics of M. amazonicum in these contrasting aquatic systems., Macrobrachium amazonicum is endemic of South America with a large geographical distribution and both biological and economical importance to Amazon. It shows variations in the ecological characteristics, behavior, and life‐history traits between populations.

This study provides new length‒weight (LWR) and length‒length relationships (LLR) for 25 indigenous fish species from Xingu River basin. Overall specimens were collected in different aquatic habitats in the Xingu River basin in quarterly collections between 2012 and 2018. The collections were carried out using distinct fishing gears, such as gill nets (20 to 180 mm mesh), seines (3 mm mesh), sieves (1 mm mesh), and casting nets (20 to 60 mm mesh). The present study shows the LWRs for 25 species, and the LLRs for 23 species. In addition, presents the new maximum total lengths for 20 species.

A new species of Geophagus sensu stricto is described from the Tapajos River basin, Brazil, elevating the number of species of the genus to 21. The new species is of commercial importance and is known in the aquarist trade as Geophagus 'red head'. The new species is diagnosed using an integrative approach, based on mitochondrial DNA analysis along with morphological evidence. The new species is distinguished from all congeners by the absence of markings on the head, the bar pattern composed by nine vertical bars on the flanks and the presence of distinct longitudinal bands in the caudal fin. Additionally, it shows a genetic distance of at least 2.0% in cytochrome b gene sequences from its closest congeners. Molecular analysis including most genera of Cichlidae from South America corroborates that the new species belongs to the group of Geophagus sensu stricto.

Hydropower is a threat to freshwater fishes. Despite a recent boom in dam construction, few studies have assessed their impact on mega-diverse tropical rivers. Using a before-after study design, we investigated the early impacts of the Belo Monte hydroelectric complex, the third-largest hydropower project in the world, on fishes of the Xingu River, a major clear-water tributary of the lower Amazon. We explored impacts across different river sectors (upstream, reservoir, reduced flow sector, and downstream) and spatial scales (individual sectors vs. all sectors combined) using joint species distribution models and different facets of diversity (taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic). After 5 years of the Belo Monte operation, species richness declined ~12% in lentic and ~16% in lotic environments. Changes in abundance were of less magnitude (4%). Effects were particularly negative for species of the families Serrasalmidae (mainly pacus), Anostomidae (headstanders), Auchenipteridae, and Pimelodidae (catfishes), whereas no taxonomic group consistently increased in richness or abundance. The reservoir and downstream sectors were the most impacted, with declines of ~24-29% in fish species richness, overall reductions in fish body size and trophic level, and a change in average body shape. Richness and abundance also declined in the reduced river flow, and changes in size, shape, and position of fins were observed. Relatively minor changes were found in the upstream sector. Variation in functional and phylogenetic diversity following river impoundment was subtle; however, across sectors, we found a reduction in functional divergence, indicating a decline in the abundance of species located near the extremities of community functional space. This may be the first sign of an environmental filtering process reducing functional diversity in the region. Greater changes in flow and habitats are expected as hydropower operations ramp up, and continued monitoring is warranted to understand the full scope and magnitude of ecological impacts.

The natural flood pulse of the Amazon basin has been altered progressively by the installation of hydroelectric dams, which have had a potentially adverse impact on the local fauna. Fish are sensitive to environmental changes, and one the way to assess how they respond is through the analysis of life history traits, such as growth patterns and reproduction. Here, we evaluated the life history traits of two sedentary cichlids, Geophagus argyrostictus and Geophagus altifrons, in the middle Xingu River (upstream and downstream sectors) pre- and post-impoundment including the flood and low water hydrological seasons. The mass-length relationship, condition factor (K), gonadossomatic index (GSI), breeding season, gonadal stages, and the length at 50% sexual maturity (L50) were analyzed. Data on river flow rates and the characteristics of the fish were collected during the pre- and post-impoundment periods. Post-impoundment, the discharge of the Xingu decreased in downstream sector. During the pre-impoundment period, the K of G. argyrostictus and female G. altifrons was lower in the upstream sector in both seasons, but higher in the downstream sector to G. argyrostictus. The GSI was lower in the post-impoundment period in both sectors and seasons in G. argyrostictus, whereas in the G. altifrons females, it was higher in the downstream sector in the low water season, but lower in the upstream sector in both seasons. In G. argyrostictus, spawning occurred in a single phase and was restricted to the low water season in both periods, whereas in G. altifrons, spawning was multiple. There was a reduction in the frequency of immature individuals in the upstream sector post-impoundment. The L50 was lower, principally in the upstream sector, in both species. Our results indicate that the growth patterns and reproduction of the two populations has been impacted, especially in the endemic G. argyrostictus. The construction of dams thus appears to place endemic species under a greatest risk of extirpation. These results provide important insights for the improvement of fish resource monitoring and the development of adequate management techniques.

Pollution in aquatic ecosystems is rapidly becoming one of the world's greatest ecological challenges. Given their intermediate position between terrestrial and marine environments, estuarine systems are especially vulnerable to human pollution. Amazonian estuaries have unique characteristics, such as heterogeneous landscape intercalating tracts of vegetation with sandbanks and beaches. In the present study, we provide the first qualitative and quantitative data on litter retention in an Amazonian estuary, comparing vegetated and bare substrate areas. Overall, 12,003 items were recovered, with a mean ± SD density and weight of 1.69 ± 2.16 items/m2 and 78.08 ± 93.11 g/m2, respectively. Plastic was the principal material (80.97%) found. The highest number of items was found in the vegetated habitats (73.11%), indicating these areas as the most affected by plastic pollution. Our findings provide important insights for future research planning and implementation of effective public policies for conservation and management of these important ecosystems.

In the Amazon Basin, several species of herbivorous serrasalmid fishes inhabit rapids, but it is unknown if they partition food resources during the annual low-water period when fish densities are high within greatly reduced volume of aquatic habitat. We investigated the trophic ecology of juveniles and adults of three species, Myleus setiger, Ossubtus xinguense, and Tometes kranponhah, common in rapids of the Xingu River during the low-water period. Diets, stable isotope ratios of muscle tissue, and functional traits were analyzed for 59 specimens of M. setiger, 175 of O. xinguense and 215 of T. kranponhah. The three species overlapped in dietary and isotopic space, with adult O. xinguense being most divergent. Juvenile and adult T. kranponhah and juvenile O. xinguense, two groups with broad diets, had lowest trophic positions estimated from isotopic data. Adult O. xinguense had the highest trophic position despite having large amounts of Podostemaceae in the diet. High trophic overlap during the low-water period suggests that either food resources are not limiting, or niches are partitioned by other means. Differences in functional traits of the three serrasalmids could be associated with differential efficiencies of swimming and feeding within microhabitats that vary according to water velocity and/or structural complexity.

Myleus pachyodus, a new serrasalmid species, is described from the Rio Teles Pires and Rio Jamanxim, both tributaries of the Rio Tapajos in Mato Grosso and Para states, Brazil. The new species differs from all congeners by having a remarkable ontogenetic thickening of the teeth shifting from slender incisiform in juveniles to thick bulky teeth at standard length ≥ 100 mm, whereas congeners present slender, antero-posteriorly flat teeth throughout all life stages. The new species further differs from congeners by having 18-20 branched dorsal-fin rays, by the lack of a diastema between contralateral outer series of premaxillary teeth and by the presence of 16-25 prepelvic spines, with the anteriormost spine never reaching the vertical through the pectoral-fin origin.

This chapter brings photographs and detailed information on two families and 23 species of the order Cichliformes and Perciformes, which includes some of the most important fish species for commerce and food in the studied rivers, such as the tucunares (Cichla spp.) also known as peacock bass. Besides being valued in sport fishing, this group of fishes has been regularly exploited, especially to be commercialized as food, throughout the studied rivers. Other smaller species from the families Cichlidae and Sciaenidae may not have high market value, but are an important regular food supply for riverine people. This chapter also includes photographs and detailed information on seven orders, eight families, and 11 species of some distinct groups of fish that are commonly found in some Amazonian rivers, but are usually not as diverse as the other groups addressed in previous chapters of this book. These fishes include groups with closer marine relatives, such as Clupeiformes and Carangiformes (flatfishes), besides the freshwater stingrays (Potamotrygonidae). Although seldom exploited for food, the stingrays may be valued by the aquarium trade and are some of the most feared fish by the Amazonian people, due to the sharp spines that these fish have in their tales. These fish were sampled through standard 24-hour experimental fishing with gillnets, in lake and river sites (two sites per community) in 16 fishing communities in the Negro and Tapajos rivers (eight communities in each river), including communities located inside and outside protected areas (Extractive Reserves), as illustrated by the maps showing the distribution of fish sampled and fish catches by fishers along the two studied rivers. We also show data from fish landings in all these 16 communities, which were voluntarily recorded by fishers themselves during a participatory monitoring program. The methods used are explained in ► Chap. 2, while ► Chap. 3 brings general results of the fisheries monitoring. We show data on distribution, abundance, fish sizes, length-weight relationship, plus data on fisheries, including fish biomass caught among studied fishing communities, fishing gear use, seasonality, and sizes of fish caught for those groups of species that are exploited for commerce or food purposes.

These fish were sampled through standard 24 hour experimental fishing with gillnets, in lake and river sites (two sites per community) in 16 fishing communities in the Negro and Tapajos rivers (eight communities in each river), including communities located inside and outside protected areas (Extractive Reserves), as illustrated by the maps showing the distribution of fish sampled and fish catches by fishers along the two studied rivers. We also show data from fish landings in all these 16 communities, which were voluntarily recorded by fishers themselves during a participatory monitoring program. A Longnose stingray Hypanus guttatus (Bloch & Schneider, 1801) embryo with a major asymmetrical morphological abnormality to its pectoral fin was obtained from commercial shrimp fisher's bycatch, off the coast of the Amazon River Mouth in northern Brazil. The specimen and the deformity, which would presumably have impeded its long-term survival, are described and documented in detail. We herein provide the first report of an abnormal individual of this species for the Brazilian coast. Resumo: Um embrião de Arraia-bicuda Hypanus guttatus (Bloch & Schneider, 1801) com uma anomalia morfológica assimétrica grave na nadadeira peitoral foi obtido como captura-acidental de um barco de pesca de camarão da costa da foz do rio Amazonas, no norte do Brasil. O indivíduo e sua deformação, que provavelmente teria impedido sua sobrevivência ao longo prazo, são descritos e documentados em detalhe. Apresentamos com esse estudo o primeiro registro de um indivíduo anormal dessa espécie para a costa do Brasil.

The present study provides the first record of an isopod parasite (Artystone trysibia) on Caquetaia spectabilis, a cichlid from the eastern Amazon collected in the State of Amapá, northern Brazil. In May 2018, specimens of C. spectabilis were collected in the lower Jari River, and 33.3% were parasitized by A. trysibia on the tegument tissue between pelvic fins. No hemorrhage or injury signals were observed in the tegument of the host. This study also expanded the distribution of A. trysibia to the eastern Amazon.

Deltas are dynamic and productive systems of enormous ecological significance, encompassing unique and biologically diverse wetland habitats. Here, we present the first data on the molecular diversity of the fish fauna of the Parnaíba Delta, the largest deltaic formation of the Americas. Partial sequences (626 bp) of the mitochondrial COI gene (Cytochrome c oxidase subunit I) were used to barcode 402 individuals, representing 128 species, belonging to 98 genera, 57 families, 17 orders and two classes. The most abundant orders were the Perciformes, Siluriformes, Gobiiformes, and Pleuronectiformes. The Neighbor-Joining (NJ), Bayesian Inference (BI), and BIN analyses produced 103 molecular clusters, while the Automatic Barcode Gap Discovery (ABGD) and Maximum Likelihood (ML) approaches revealed 102 clusters. The mean conspecific, congeneric and confamilial genetic distances were 0.33%, 14.37%, and 18.60%, respectively. Intraspecific divergence ranged from 0.0% to 1.4%, and all species presented barcode gaps, with the exception of two clusters of Cathorops spixii (OTU 96 and OTU 103), which were separated by a low interspecific distance (1.2%), which overlaps the maximum intraspecific genetic distance (1.4%). The barcode data provide new insights into the fish diversity of the Parnaíba Delta, which will be important for the development of further research on this fauna.

A new species in the serrasalmid genus Myloplus is described from the middle Mazaruni River, Essequibo River basin, Guyana. The new species is similar to Myleus pacu and Myloplus planquettei in its silver to purplish black coloration and its overall morphology, and has a putative syntopic distribution with those species. The new species is, however, readily distinguishable from the other two by meristic counts of the unpaired fins and by differences in color pattern, primarily in males. Additionally, we provide comments on Myleus pacu and other species that have been confounded under that name. RESUMO Uma nova espécie de serrasalmídeo do gênero Myloplus é descrita do médio rio Mazaruni, bacia do rio Essequibo, Guyana. A nova espécie é similar a Myleus pacu e Myloplus planquettei pela sua coloração prateada a preto arroxeado e pela morfologia geral do corpo, e por ter suposta distribuição sintópica com essas espécies. No entanto, a nova espécie é prontamente distinguida dessas duas últimas espécies por contagens das nadadeiras não pares, e por diferenças no padrão de coloração, principalmente nos machos. Adicionalmente, fornecemos comentários sobre Myleus pacu e outras espécies que têm sido confundidas sob esse nome.

Reported here is the first evidence of plastic ingestion by freshwater fishes in the Amazon. Plastic bags, bottles, fishing gear, and other products are entering Amazonian water bodies and degrade into meso- and micro-plastic particles that may be ingested, either directly or indirectly via food chains, by fishes. Examination of stomach contents from 172 specimens of 16 serrasalmid species from lower Xingu River Basin revealed consumption of plastic particles by fishes in each of three trophic guilds (herbivores, omnivores, carnivores). Overall, about one quarter of specimens and 80% of species analyzed had ingested plastic particles ranging from 1 to 15 mm in length. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy indicated 12 polymer types, including 27% identified as polyethylene, 13% polyvinyl chloride, 13% polyamide, 13% polypropylene, 7% poly(methyl methacrylate), 7% rayon, 7% polyethylene terephtalate, and 13% a blend of polyamide and polyethylene terephtalate. Dimensions of ingested plastic particles varied among trophic guilds, even though the frequency and mass of ingested particles were not significantly different among fishes with different feeding habits.

A new species of Myloplus Gill is described from Eastern Tumucumaque Mountain Range, drainages of the Oyapock and Araguari rivers between Brazil and French Guiana. The new species is diagnosed by having comparatively large scales on the flanks, resulting in lower counts when compared with congeners, i.e., 59 to 70 total perforated scales on lateral line, 31 to 35 longitudinal scales above lateral line, 24 to 29 longitudinal scales below lateral line, and 22 to 26 circumpeduncular scale rows. The new species most closely resembles Myloplus rubripinnis by sharing with this species a general rounded shape, a similar color pattern, and a high number of rays, i.e., 23 to 25 branched dorsal-fin rays and 35 to 38 branched anal-fin rays in the new species (vs. 24 to 25 and 32 to 40, respectively, in M. rubripinnis). After reviewing the available type-specimens of all Myloplus species, M. rubripinnis is re-diagnosed as having higher counts of branched dorsal-fin rays and anal-fin rays combined to tiny scales on flanks, i.e., 85 to 89 total perforated scales on lateral line, 38 to 45 longitudinal scales above lateral line, 33 to 42 longitudinal scales below lateral line, and 30 to 39 circumpeduncular scale rows.

This study reports on the length-weight relationships and condition factor for the endangered rheophilic fish Ossubtus xinguense Jégu from Rio Xingu rapids. This species is threatened by construction of the third largest hydroelectric in the world, the Belo Monte dam close to the city of Altamira, northern Brazil. Specimens were collected in the dry season between July 2012 and September 2012. Male specimens have body length larger than females, atypical in serrasalmid fishes, and different length-weight relationships were found between adult and juvenile specimens. This study presents the first biological characteristics for O. xinguense. Resumo Este estudo relata as relações peso–comprimento e fator de condição para o peixe reofílico ameaçado de extinção Ossubtus xinguense Jégu. Esta espécie, endêmica das corredeiras do Rio Xingu, é ameaçada pela construção da terceira maior hidrelétrica do mundo, denominada Belo Monte localizada às proximidades da cidade de Altamira, norte do Brasil. Os espécimes foram coletados na estação seca do rio, entre julho e setembro de 2012. Espécimes machos apresentaram tamanho corporal maior que fêmeas, condição atípica entre os peixes serrasalmídeos, e diferentes relações peso–comprimento foram encontradas entre espécimes juvenis e adultos. Este estudo apresenta as primeiras características biológicas para O. xinguense.

Piranhas and pacus (Characiformes: Serrasalmidae) are a charismatic but understudied family of Neotropical fishes. Here, we analyse a DNA barcode dataset comprising 1,122 specimens, 69 species, 16 genera, 208 localities, and 34 major river drainages in order to make an inventory of diversity and to highlight taxa and biogeographic areas worthy of further sampling effort and conservation protection. Using four methods of species discovery—incorporating both tree and distance based techniques—we report between 76 and 99 species-like clusters, i.e. between 20% and 33% of a priori identified taxonomic species were represented by more than one mtDNA lineage. There was a high degree of congruence between clusters, with 60% supported by three or four methods. Pacus of the genus Myloplus exhibited the most intraspecific variation, with six of the 13 species sampled found to have multiple lineages. Conversely, piranhas of the Serrasalmus rhombeus group proved difficult to delimit with these methods due to genetic similarity and polyphyly. Overall, our results recognise substantially underestimated diversity in the serrasalmids, and emphasise the Guiana and Brazilian Shield rivers as biogeographically important areas with multiple cases of across-shield and within-shield diversifications. We additionally highlight the distinctiveness and complex phylogeographic history of rheophilic taxa in particular, and suggest multiple colonisations of these habitats by different serrasalmid lineages.

Summary This study provides length–weight relationships (LWRs) for 33 fish species sampled with several types of fishing gear in six expeditions between 2010 and 2011, during the dry and wet seasons in the middle and lower Cauca River Basin, Northern Colombia. The report represents the first reference on LWRs for 28 species and also provides the new maximum size for 15 species.

Length-weight relationships (LWR) of 14 fish species were estimated from Palito Mountain ridge, upper Tapajós river basin, Brazilian Amazon region. This study represents the first LWR to the small characid Hemigrammus marginatus, and additionally provides new maximum record of length and weight for three species.. A sexually mature albino specimen of the Gillbacker Sea Catfish species Sciades parkeri (Siluriformes, Ariidae), a vulnerable species, was captured in northern Amazon estuary, State of Pará, Brazil. Herein we present the first record of albinism phenomenon for this species, including the morphometric description of the albino, and a non-abnormal coloring specimen.

Myloplus lucienae, new species, is described from the blackwater tributaries of the rio Negro basin. It is one of the few Myloplus species typically found in rapid areas of the Guiana Shield. It is diagnosed from congeners by the combination of an elongated body, small prepelvic spines that reach anteriorly just to the middle of the abdomen between verticals through pectoral- and pelvic-fin origin, and large scales on flanks resulting in smaller scale counts.

Two recessive resistance genes against Clover yellow vein virus (ClYVV), cyv1 and cyv2, have been previously reported. We recently screened resistant peas from a separate set of pea lines and classified them into two groups according to their distinct modes of resistance. We later revealed that one group carries cyv2, encoding eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4E (eIF4E), in linkage group (LG) VI. We explored the possibility that the resistance gene, tentatively designated non-cyv2, that confers resistance to the other group, was actually cyv1. We found that PI 236493, which carries cyv1, had restricted cell-to-cell movement of ClYVV similar to that in non-cyv2 peas including PI 429853. PI 429853 was crossed with susceptible line PI 250438. Mapping of F2 progeny revealed that non-cyv2 was 4 cM from the simple sequence repeat marker AB40, whose loci are close to cyv1, mo, and sbm-2 mapped in LG II, which mediates resistance to other potyviruses. Moreover, PI 429853 crossed with PI 236493 produced F1 progeny resistant to ClYVV, raising the possibility that non-cyv2 is allelic to cyv1. Because mo was previously mapped with eIF(iso)4E in LG II, we examined the possibility that non-cyv2, cyv1, and mo encoded eIF(iso)4E. However, there was no difference in the nucleotide sequence of the eIF(iso)4E-coding region between susceptible and resistant pea lines. The eIF(iso)4E gene was equivalently expressed in both PI 429853 and PI 250438 before and after ClYVV infection. Our results suggest that these resistance genes are unlikely to encode eIF(iso)4E on LG II.

The same mutant allele of eukaryotic initiation factor 4E (eIF4E) that confers resistance to Pea seed-borne mosaic virus (sbm-1) and the white lupine strain of Bean yellow mosaic virus (wlv) also confers resistance to Clover yellow vein virus (ClYVV) in pea. The eIF4E genes from several pea lines were isolated and sequenced. Analysis of the eIF4E amino acid sequences from several resistant lines revealed that some lines, including PI 378159, have the same sequence as reported for sbm-1 and wlv. When eIF4E from a susceptible pea line was expressed from a ClYVV vector after mechanical inoculation of resistant PI 378159, the virus caused systemic infection, similar to its effects in susceptible line PI 250438. The resistance to ClYVV in line PI 378159 was characterized through a cross with PI 193835, which reportedly carries cyv-2. Mechanical inoculation of the F1 progeny with ClYVV resulted in no infection, indicating that the resistance gene in PI 378159 is identical to cyv-2 in PI 193835. Furthermore, particle bombardment of pea line PI 193835 with infectious cDNA of ClYVV (pClYVV/C3-S65T) resulted in the same resistance mode as that described for PI 378159. These results demonstrate that the resistance to ClYVV conferred by cyv-2 is mediated by eIF4E and that cyv-2 is identical to sbm-1 and wlv.

Myloplus zorroi sp. n. is described from the Rio Madeira Basin in Amazonia. The new species had been treated as an undescribed Tometes species because of the absence of a marked abdominal keel and few small spines forming its prepelvic serrae, features commonly found in the species of the Myleus clade of the Serrasalmidae (species of genera Myleus, Mylesinus, Ossubtus and Tometes) and also in species of Utiaritichthys. Myloplus zorroi sp. n. shares the following characters with its congeners and Utiaritichthys: molariform teeth (versus incisiform teeth in Myleus clade members); a labial row of premaxillary teeth separated from lingual row by an internal gap (versus absence of internal gap between premaxillary teeth rows); and an ascending process of premaxilla wide from its base to the tip (versus ascending process tapering from its base to the tip). Like other Myloplus species, Myloplus zorroi sp. n. differs from Utiariticthys by having a deeper body, approximately 60% of standard length (versus usually less than 50% of standard length). Considering all the morphological evidence, including the presence of 13–19 low spines forming the prepelvic serrae in Myloplus zorroi sp. n. versus more than 20 high spines forming a marked prepelvic keel in other species of Mylopus, the new species is here assigned to Myloplus. Comparisons of the new species with nominal species of Myloplus, representatives of the Myleus clade, and other related taxa are provided.

This study characterized resistance in pea lines PI 347295 and PI 378159 to Clover yellow vein virus (ClYVV). Genetic cross experiments showed that a single recessive gene controls resistance in both lines. Conventional mechanical inoculation did not result in infection; however, particle bombardment with infectious plasmid or mechanical inoculation with concentrated viral inocula did cause infection. When ClYVV No. 30 isolate was tagged with a green fluorescent protein (GFP) and used to monitor infection, viral cell-to-cell movement differed in the two pea lines. In PI 347595, ClYVV replicated at a single-cell level, but did not move to neighboring cells, indicating that resistance operated at a cell-to-cell step. In PI 378159, the virus moved to cells around the infection site and reached the leaf veins, but viral movement was slower than that in the susceptible line. The viruses observed around the infection sites and in the veins were then recovered and inoculated again by a conventional mechanical inoculation method onto PI 378159 demonstrating that ClYVV probably had mutated and newly emerged mutant viruses can move to neighboring cells and systemically infect the plants. Tagging the virus with GFP was an efficient tool for characterizing resistance modes. Implications of the two resistance modes are discussed.

Two new species of Tometes from the Brazilian Shield rapids are described. Tometes kranponhah is endemic to the Xingu River basin, whereas Tometes ancylorhynchus occurs both in the Xingu and the Tocantins-Araguaia River basins. The two species are sympatric in the Xingu drainages and have many similarities in morphology and colouration. Major diagnostic differences are the dark pigmentation on the opercle of T. kranponhah and its distinct snout shape and arrangement of premaxillary teeth. In addition, T. kranponhah is a large fish that is abundant in the Xingu River, whereas T. ancylorhynchus is a medium-sized fish for which there are few records.

Sludge samples from an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor and four submerged aerated biofilters (BFs) of a wastewater treatment plant (1,000 inhab.) were processed at bench scale by alkaline and acid hydrolysis with the objective to evaluate the organic matter solubilization, volatile solids (VS) destruction and the effect of hydrolytic processes on the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) fraction of the sludge samples. The results showed that alkaline hydrolysis of sludge samples treatment with 1.0% total solids (TS) using NaOH 20 meq L−1 was more efficient on organic matter solubilization and VS destruction than acid hydrolysis. The EPS sludge content was also affected by the alkaline treatment of anaerobic sludge samples. The EPS concentrations (mg EPS/gVSS) on the anaerobic sludge after the alkaline treatment were significantly lowered according to sample height in the UASB reactor. Data indicated that the EPS sludge fraction is the main component affected by the alkaline hydrolytic process of anaerobic sludge samples.

Duckweed based stabilization ponds, an alternative for wastewater treatment, are attracting a growing interest from researchers because they are basically a low cost technology, easy to built and operate, and produce tertiary quality effluents. Besides, this technology offers the possibility of resource recovery by producing high quality duckweed protein, which can be of further use. Since the technology is rather new, there are many aspects to be studied before its full-scale implementation. It is necessary to gain sound knowledge of the basic principles of the complex processes occurring in the system, as well as of the practical aspects of design and operation. The presence of a layer of duckweed on the surface is expected to produce different environmental and physicochemical conditions in the water from those found in conventional stabilization ponds. These environmental and physicochemical conditions affect both plant growth and biological treatment processes in the system, therefore it is important to determine their behavior in a duckweed system and how they can be affected by an anaerobic pretreatment. Continuous flow pilot plants composed of seven ponds in series were operated with artificial substrate under two different conditions: with anaerobic pretreatment and without anaerobic pretreatment. The flow was kept constant during the operation. Conditions such as pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, alkalinity, conductivity, chemical oxygen demand, biochemical oxygen demand, total and ammonium nitrogen, nitrites and nitrates, and phosphorus were evaluated in the system under steady state conditions. The main conclusions from the study include the following: pH, temperature and oxygen profiles are more stable in duckweed ponds than in conventional stabilization ponds; anaerobic pretreatment has a significant effect on the oxygen concentration in the system and on the organic matter removal but not on the nutrient removal.
