Livestock production in drylands requires consideration of the ecological applications of ecohydrological redistribution of water. Intensive cattle trampling and the associated increase of surface runoff are common concerns for rangeland productivity and sustainability. Here, we highlight a regional livestock production system in which cattle trails and trampling surrounding an artificial impoundment are purposely managed to enhance redistribution and availability of water for cattle drinking. Based on literature synthesis and field measurements, we first describe cattle production systems and surface water redistribution in the Dry Chaco rangelands of South America, and then develop a conceptual framework to synthesize the ecohydrological impacts of livestock production on these ecosystems. Critical to this framework is the pioshere-an degraded overgrazed and overtrampled area where vegetation has difficulties to grow, usually close to the water points. The Dry Chaco rangelands have three key distinctive characteristics associated with the flat sedimentary environment lacking fresh groundwater and the very extensive ranching conditions: (i) cattle drinking water is provided by artificial impoundments filled by runoff, (ii) heavy trampling around the impoundment and its adjacent areas generates a piosphere that favors runoff towards the impoundment, and (iii) the impoundment, piosphere, and extensive forage areas are hydrologically connected with a network of cattle trails. We propose an ecohydrological framework where cattle transit and trampling alter the natural water circulation of these ecosystems, affecting small fractions of the landscape through increased runoff (compaction in piosphere and trails), surface connectivity (convergence of trails to piosphere to impoundment) and ponding (compaction of the impoundment floor) that operate together making water harvesting and storage possible. These effects have likely generated a positive water feedback on the expansion of livestock in the region with a relatively low impact on forage production. We highlight the role of livestock transit as a geomorphological agent capable of reshaping the hydrology of flat sedimentary rangelands in ways that can be managed positively for sustainable ranching systems. We suggest that the Dry Chaco offers an alternative paradigm for rangelands in which cattle trampling may contribute to sustainable seminatural production systems with implications for other dry and flat rangelands of the world.

Rainwater harvesting and associated storage is essential for cattle ranching in the drylands of Argentina and elsewhere. This is the first study to attempt to quantify the hydrological inflows and losses from rainwater harvesting impoundments. To address the direct effect of cattle within impoundments, a typical cattle-affected impoundment was instrumented and compared with that of a similar impoundment but without cattle access. Analysis of the storage dynamics with reference to the controlling variables demonstrated the highly episodic nature of the generation of infiltrationexcess overland flow that recharged the impoundments. The impoundments experienced 43 and 35% of storage loss to open-water-evaporation for the cattle-affected and control impoundments, respectively. Critically, the cattle-effected impoundment lost only 15% of storage to leakage (after cattle consumption was taken into account), while the control lost 65% of its water to basal leakage. Indeed systems modelling of the rainfall-storage dynamics showed that the cattle-affected impoundment, despite consumption by 300 cows, maintained water in the impoundment (per a unit input of rainfall) for longer than the control (a 65- versus 25-day residence time). These results highlight the unintended beneficial effect of cattle trampling on the floor of the impoundment reducing leakage losses. Fil: Magliano, Patricio Nicolás. In flat environments, groundwater is relatively shallow, tightly associated with surface water and climate, and can have either positive and negative impacts on natural and human systems depending on its depth. A linked modelling and analysis framework that seeks to capture linkages across multiple scales at the climate/water/ crop nexus in the Argentine Pampas is presented. This region shows a strong coupling between climate, soil water, and land use due to its extremely flat topography and poorly developed drainage networks. The work describes the components of the framework and, subsequently, presents results from simulations performed with the twin goals of (i) validating the framework as a whole and (ii) demonstrating its usefulness to explore interesting contexts such as unexperienced climate scenarios (wet/dry periods), hypothetical policies (e.g., differential grains export taxes), and adoption of non-structural technologies (e.g., cover crops) to manage wáter table depth. Our understanding of the mechanisms routing precipitation inputs to evapotranspiration and streamflow in catchments is still very fragmented, particularly in the case of saturated flows. Here we explore five mechanisms by which plants and streams compete with each other for water, based on multiple scales of observations in a flat semiarid sedimentary catchment of central Argentina subject to abrupt hydrological transformations. Since the 80s, the “El Morro” catchment (1334 km2, -33.64°, -65.36°) experienced a fast expansion of crops over native forests and grasslands, rapid water table level rises (~0.3 m y-1), spontaneous expansion of wetlands and permanent streams by groundwater sapping. Based on episodic and continuous groundwater level, stream flow, and remote sensing data we show that plants not only take away water from streams by drying the unsaturated zone (mechanism 1), but by tapping the saturated zone in the expanding waterlogged environments (mechanism 2) and in the upland environments that remain uncultivated and display increasing tree cover (mechanism 3). Conversely, streams take away water from plants through pulsed bed-deepening and water table depression (mechanism 4), and riparian and wetland zones burying with fresh sediments (mechanism 5). While earlier work established widespread support for mechanisms 1 preventing stream formation, diurnal and seasonal fluctuations of water table levels and base streamflow records in this study proved the importance of mechanisms 2 and 3 under the current high-water table conditions. These data together with remotely-sensed greenness showed a growing but localized relevance of mechanism 4 and 5 as the stream network developed. The distinction of recharge- vs. topography-controlled groundwater systems is useful to organize the interplay of these concurrent mechanisms. Findings point to the unsaturated-saturated contact zone as a crucial and dynamic hub for water partition and for ecological, geomorphological, and hydrological knowledge integration.

We synthesize research on the magnitude and dynamisms of salt stocks in the Chaco-Pampas. While current soil maps characterize one-fourth of the region’s soils as saline; integrated soil-hydrology-vegetation studies show salinity to be more widespread and dynamic due to the presence of shallow and stagnant groundwater systems. Two salt retention mechanisms that are turned “off” or “on” by land use changes are proposed: “arrested drainage” and “landscape stagnation.” In the Chaco and Espinal, deforestation and cultivation have relaxed arrested drainage, raising the groundwater and bringing a diluted salt pool to the surface that damages crops and soils. Over the shallower and fresher water tables of the Pampas, tree plantations trigger local arrested drainage and in the landscape stagnation context work as virtual lowlands, consuming groundwater and increasing salt pools. While land use changes highlight the dominant role of vegetation dictating the dynamics of salt pools, key fundamental questions about long-term salt dynamics remain open. Rapid and widespread land use changes offered a unique laboratory to understand saline environments showing that they are more dynamic and sensitive to our interventions, than previously thought.

Hosting the flattest sedimentary plains and highest Andean range of the continent, southern South America faces hydrological transformations driven by climate and land use changes. Although water stable isotopes can help understand these transformations, regional synthesis on their composition is lacking. We compiled for the first time a dataset of H and O isotopic composition for 1659 samples (precipitation, rivers, groundwater and lakes) along latitude (22.4°S to 41.6°S), longitude (55.3°W to 71.5°W), elevation (1–4700 m) and precipitation (∼50 to ∼1500 mm/a) gradients encompassing the Chaco-Espinal-Pampas plains, their adjacent Andean Cordillera and smaller mountain ranges in-between. Emerging patterns reveal (i) only slight seasonal isotope trends in precipitation with no effects of event size, (ii) Atlantic/Amazonian vs. Pacific moisture supply to rivers north and south of the ‘arid diagonal’ of the continent, respectively, (iii) uniform isotopic composition in Atlantic/Amazonian-fed rivers vs. poleward isotope enrichment in Pacific-fed rivers caused by the elevation decline of the Andes, (iv) strong direct evaporation effect in rivers and shallow (

The FLUXNET2015 dataset provides ecosystem-scale data on CO2, water, and energy exchange between the biosphere and the atmosphere, and other meteorological and biological measurements, from 212 sites around the globe (over 1500 site-years, up to and including year 2014). These sites, independently managed and operated, voluntarily contributed their data to create global datasets. Data were quality controlled and processed using uniform methods, to improve consistency and intercomparability across sites. The dataset is already being used in a number of applications, including ecophysiology studies, remote sensing studies, and development of ecosystem and Earth system models. FLUXNET2015 includes derived-data products, such as gap-flled time series, ecosystem respiration and photosynthetic uptake estimates, estimation of uncertainties, and metadata about the measurements, presented for the frst time in this paper. In addition, 206 of these sites are for the frst time distributed under a Creative Commons (CC-BY 4.0) license. Land-use change has been the strongest driver of vegetation cover change in the world. In the South American Dry Chaco (~1 M km2; PPT/ET0

Depending on its depth from the soil surface, shallow groundwater can represent a valuable water resource to alleviate droughts, or a stress agent that causes waterlogging and flooding in rainfed crops. Groundwater depth varies across space, following landscape topographic features; through time, accompanying climate fluctuations; and may also shift in both dimensions in response to crop choice. We evaluated the contribution of climate, topography and crop choice on the variability of groundwater depth in rainfed systems of western Pampas, throughout a five year period of extreme precipitation fluctuation (2008?2013). Sixteen permanent monitoring wells were installed in four different topographic settings along the smoothly rolling landscape, covering the three phases of a maize?soybean?wheat/soybean rotation, common in the region. Water table dynamics, measured at weekly to monthly intervals, was very similar across landscape positions, with a range of depth from the surface of −0.2 (flood) to 1.8 m and 1.8?4.4 m in the lowest and highest positions, respectively. At the inter-annual scale, water table fluctuations were predominantly dictated by climate variability with no effect due to the implanted crop. Only at the intra-annual scale, crop choice appeared as a relevant control, with wheat?soybean flattening the spring level rises and summer drops repeatedly found under maize and soybean single crops. Daily meteorological data and remote sensing estimates of live and dead crop cover were used to simulate transpiration demand and soil evaporation. As the balance between precipitation and crop evapotranspiration was positive/negative, watertables raised/dropped 0.21 cm mm−1 (n = 80, R2 0.32) and 0.22 cm mm−1 (n = 1092, R2 0.31) at inter and intra-annual scales, respectively. While crop choice may influence water table levels within a growing season, it has only a subtle effect on year to year fluctuation. With the explored annual crop options, farmers in the Pampas could reduce spring flooding risk when sowing double crops but cannot have a substantial effect on the longer term dynamics of the water table. As the largest dry forest of the continent, the South American Chaco covers a broad latitudinal gradient (18°–33°S) with extremely flat topography, homogeneous vegetation structure and similar summer-rain regime. Despite high deforestation rates, Chaco is still dominated by native forests, offering a unique opportunity to explore the role of biophysical controls dictated by latitudinal gradients on its hydrological functioning. In this study, we used GRACE-derived satellite data, climatic information and river flow records to analyse the seasonality of total water storage and its relationship with climatic factors and plant activity across the whole latitudinal gradient of the Chaco region. Our results showed a strong reduction in the intensity and duration of the hydrological dry period towards the southern and more temperate portion in despite similar rainfall seasonality. Mean seasonal fluctuation of water storage was three times higher (119.1 ± 46.0 vs. 38.6 ± 12.4 mm year−1) for the northern ( 26°S), a pattern that matched the river flow seasonality of the main rivers of the region. A higher temporal coupling of rainfall and actual evapotranspiration towards the south appears to drive the observed latitudinal hydrological shift, highlighting the importance of atmospheric water demand and plant activity regulating the water cycle at Chaco regional scale.

We present Hydroman, a flexible spatially explicit model coupling human and hydrological processes to explore shallow water tables and land cover interactions in flat agricultural landscapes, modeled after the Argentine Pampas. With fewer parameters, Hydroman aligned well with established hydrological models, and was validated with observed water table patterns and crop yield data. Simulations with different climate, phreatic and land cover conditions confirmed that climate remains the main driver, but crops also influence water levels and yields, depending on the growing cycle. We also examined the impacts of two alternative sowing strategies. Risk aversion proves robust in minimizing crop losses, but often results in less sowing, exacerbating flooding. Strict rotators risk more, but help stabilize the groundwater levels. Reintroducing pasture further stabilizes the system. Future work will engage farmers to derive and assess land cover strategies that maximize yield and minimize losses, and transfer our modeling approach to other applications.

Soil evaporation is a dominant water flux of flat dry ecosystems, reducing available water for plant transpiration. Vegetation plays a key role at controlling evaporation, especially by altering soil surface micro-meteorological conditions. Here, we explored the vegetation cover effect on soil evaporation, differentiating the effects of canopy cover (shadow) and of surface cover (litter) in forests and pastures of Dry Chaco rangelands (San Luis, Argentina). We measured daily soil evaporation using irrigated micro-lysimeters installed at regularly spaced (2 m) patches along transects in native dry forests (n = 54 patches) and pastures (n = 27 patches). In each forest patch, we established a pair of micro-lysimeters, one with litter (3 cm depth, representing high litter cover conditions of the site) and one with bare soil, but in pastures, only one micro-lysimeter with bare soil was installed at each patch (representing the typical no litter cover conditions of pastures of the study site). We found that, when soil water was not limiting, litter cover had the strongest effect in reducing evaporation rates, with a 4- and 6.4-fold reduction respect to bare soil micro-lysimeters in the forest and pasture, respectively. Evaporation decreased sharply with declining incident radiation fraction in bare soil micro-lysimeters from 5.6 mm/day (full radiation) to 3.5 mm/day (full canopy shadow; R2 = 0.50). Litter-covered micro-lysimeters showed lower and more stable evaporation rates, decreasing only from 1.35 to 1.03 mm/day under the same radiation conditions (R2 = 0.10). In accordance with J.T. Ritchie evaporation model, we identified a threshold of ~10.5 mm of cumulative evaporation at which evaporation switched from energy to water limitation in all situations, as revealed by declining evaporation rates and raising surface temperatures. Under typical wet–summer conditions, the pasture, the forest with bare soil, and the forest with litter would need on average a drying cycle of 1.5, 2.5, and 9.5 days, respectively, to reach that threshold. Simulations showed that, considering the distribution of rainfall events at our study site, litter would maintain evaporation in the energy-limited mode most of the time (68.8% of summer days), potentially favouring transpiration. The ecohydrological key role of soil litter controlling evaporation highlights the importance of an accurate assessment of management practices controlling the evaporation/transpiration partition in dry ecosystems. Very alkaline environments exceeding calcite buffering are globally rare but conspicuous in many sedimentary plains of the World. While the deleterious effects of high alkalinity on soils are well understood, less agreement exists on its causes. We revise these causes to understand these exceptional environments and explain the pervasiveness of calcite buffering elsewhere. We argue that the injection of respired CO2 into stagnant hydrological systems subject to evaporative discharge is the key context for high alkalinization. The evolution of evaporites in nature reaches highly alkaline stages only when excess of (bi)carbonate with respect to divalent cations occurs. In most dry landscapes, evaporating groundwater solutions lose this condition as respired inorganic carbon (recharge zone supply) equilibrates with divalent cations from rocks (whole hydro-trajectory supply). Groundwater in stagnant landscapes avoids this limitation owing to short/shallow trajectories sustaining (bi)carbonate excess until evaporative discharge zones are reached. Flat sedimentary landscapes that are (i) wet enough to develop stagnation and have shallow water tables but (ii) sufficiently dry to expose them to evaporative concentration should host very alkaline soils. Az alföldi üledékes síkságon, szubhumid klímán a füves területek és szántók helyén telepített erdők erőteljes hatást gyakorolnak a talajtani közegre, a talajvíztükör szintjére és mozgására. A fák mély gyökerezése és a korábbi vegetációnál jelentősen nagyobb vízfelvétele elősegíti a sótartalom-növekedést az altalajban, illetve a talajvízszint-csökkenést. Az erdőtelepítés globális szinten ugrásszerűen megnövekedett, Magyarországon az erdők területének növekedése elérte az évi 15.000 ha-os rátát. A telepítések főleg az Alföldet érintették, ahol az erdők részben sekély talajvizű területek gyepeit és szántóit váltották fel.Kutatásunk során alföldszerte 31 erdő-kontroll furatpár esetében talajtani, hidrológiai és biológiai terepi megfigyeléseket végeztünk, beleértve a megütött talajvízszint észlelést, a talajvíz sótartalom vizsgálatát, a földtani közeg rétegződésének leírását és a fafaj, valamint az állomány korának rögzítését. Deforestation affects climate and the energy balance of the Earth not only through the release of greenhouse gases but also through shifts in the physical properties of the surface. These physical effects can be strongly dependent not only on the deforestation event but on the land use choices and management that follow it. Here we explored how the albedo and radiation balance of the dry subtropical Chaco forests of South America changed over the last decade in response to both deforestation and land use/management. For the whole region we analyzed changes in the mean annual albedo derived from MODIS imagery and their relation with the dominant land use trajectories for a 12-year period (2000–2012). In two focal areas we identified how specific land uses and management shifts affected the seasonality of surface albedo and green vegetation cover, quantifying their associated radiation budget changes and radiative forcing effects. Deforestation accounted for 83% of the regional albedo increase observed in Chaco, yet, land use and land management changes were also a main driver of albedo shifts, explaining the rest of the albedo rise occurred in the region. Albedo raises increased the mean annual outgoing shortwave energy flux at the top of the atmosphere producing a biophysical cooling effect which was strongly dependent on the land use choice and agricultural management, ranging from −8 W m−2 in silvopastoral systems to −17 W m−2 under single annual cropping schemes. These values are equivalent to a reduction in atmospheric CO2 of 12–27 Mg C ha−1, or 15–55% of the typical emissions that accompany deforestation in this region. Land use and management choices in the Chaco region produce strong divergences in the resulting albedo seasonality that should not be ignored in the assessment of their net climatic effects and the discussion of possible mitigation actions. Being one of the oldest and most serious environmental problems, soil and groundwater salinization poses critical challenges for the managing of agricultural and natural areas. Together with climate, topography and land-use are main controls dictating salt accumulation patterns at different spatial scales. In this paper, we quantified the response of salt accumulation to the interactive effects of topography (lowland-upland gradients) and vegetation (annual crops, tree plantations, native grasslands) across a sub-humid sedimentary landscape with shallow groundwater in the Inland Pampas of Argentina. We measured salt stocks from the surface down to the water table through soil coring and their horizontal distribution through electrical-resistivity imaging in eleven fields occupied by annual crops, eucalyptus plantations and grasslands encompassing groundwater depth gradients of 1 to 6 m below the surface. Land-use and topography exerted strong influences on salinity and explained together 82% and 66% of the spatial variability of groundwater salinity and soil salt accumulation (0-2 m of depth), respectively. As a single explanatory variable, land-use overwhelmed topography dictating salinity patterns. Tree plantations stored 7 to 8 times more salts than croplands and grasslands throughout the unsaturated soil profile in areas with shallow water-tables (

Land cover changes may affect climate and the energy balance of the Earth through their influence on the greenhouse gas composition of the atmosphere (biogeochemical effects) but also through shifts in the physical properties of the land surface (biophysical effects). We explored how the radiation budget changes following the replacement of tem-perate dry forests by crops in central semiarid Argentina and quantified the biophysical radiative forcing of this transformation. For this purpose, we computed the albedo and surface temperature for a 7-year period (2003?2009) from MODIS imagery at 70 paired sites occupied by native forests and crops and calculated the radiation budget at the tropopause and surface levels using a columnar radiation model parameterized with satellite data. Mean annual black-sky albedo and diurnal surface temperature were 50% and 2.5°C higher in croplands than in dry forests. These contrasts increased the outgoing shortwave energy flux at the top of the atmosphere in croplands by a quarter (58.4 vs. 45.9 W m2) which, together with a slight increase in the outgoing longwave flux, yielded a net cooling of 14 Wm2. This biophysical cooling effect would be equivalent to a reduction in atmospheric CO2of 22 Mg C ha1, which involves approximately a quarter to a half of the typical carbon emissions that accompany deforestation in these ecosystems. We showed that the replacement of dry forests by crops in central Argentina has strong biophys-ical effects on the energy budget which could counterbalance the biogeochemical effects of deforestation. Underesti-mating or ignoring these biophysical consequences of land-use changes on climate will certainly curtail the effectiveness of many warming mitigation actions, particularly in semiarid regions where high radiation load and smaller active carbon pools would increase the relative importance of biophysical forcing. In this paper, we explored how aridity influences the regional deforestation and land-use patterns (i.e. crops/pastures) in South American Dry Chaco. To do this, we contrasted land use during last decade (2001–2012) with a spatially explicit aridity index, which we complemented with a crop water balance model. Land-use classifications were performed by considering the temporal variability of NDVI from MODIS satellites, showing that 40 and 60% of deforested land was assigned to crops and pastures, respectively. Results indicate that although the regional deforestation pattern was not associated with the aridity gradient, with drier areas similarly deforested as wetter areas, contrasting differences were observed in the use of this land, with crops mostly located (90%) in wetter areas and pastures evenly distributed across the whole aridity gradient. This research highlighted the strong effect of water limitations on the land-use option after deforestation and may help to set the basis for future land-use planning policies. Vegetation exerts a strong control on water balance and key hydrological variables like evapotranspiration,water yield or even the flooded area may result severely affected by vegetation changes. Particularly,transitions between tree- and herbaceous-dominated covers, which are taking place at increasing rates in South America,may have the greatest impact on the water balance. Based on Landsat imagery analysis,soil sampling and hydrological modeling, we evaluated vapor and liquid ecosystem water fluxes and soil moisture changes in temperate Argentina and provided a useful framework to assess potential hydrological impacts of vegetation cover changes. Two types of native vegetation (grasslands and forests) and three modified covers (eucalyptus plantations, single soybean crop and wheat/soybean rotation) were considered in the analysis. Despite contrasting structural differences, native forests and eucalyptus plantations displayed evapotranspiration values remarkably similar (∼1100 mmy−1) and significantly higher than herbaceous vegetation covers (∼780,∼670 and∼800 mmy−1 for grasslands, soybean andwheat/soybean (Triticum aestivum L., Glycine max L.) system, respectively. In agreement with evapotranspiration estimates, soil profiles to a depth of 3m were significantly drier in woody covers (0.31 m3 m−3) compared to native grasslands (0.39 m3 m−3), soybean (0.38 m3 m−3) and wheat/soybean rotation (0.35 m3 m−3). Liquid water fluxes (deep drainage + surface runoff) were at least doubled in herbaceous covers, as suggested by modeling (∼170 mmy−1 and ∼357 mmy−1, for woody and herbaceous covers, respectively). Our analysis revealed the hydrological outcomes of different vegetation changes trajectories and provided valuable tools that will help to anticipate likely impacts, minimize uncertainties and provide a solid base for sustainable land use planning. Besides precipitation inputs, evapotranspiration of irrigated and natural oases, i.e. riparian and phreatophytic ecosystems, of rain-shadow deserts is strongly influenced by lateral water inputs supplied by mountain rivers and foothill-recharged aquifers. A better understanding of these supplies and their imprint on the water consumption of those inflow dependent ecosystems (IDEs) across arid regions is critical to manage agricultural outputs and ecosystem conservation, and the hydrological trade-offs that emerge among them. Actual operative satellite and physically-based algorithms able to map evapotranspiration (ET) rates at regional scales still fail when they are applied in ungauged regions because of their high parameterization and meteorological data requirements. We introduce an ecological and satellite-based approach to explore the impacts of external water supplies on arid ecosystems, focusing on the Central Monte desert and its water supplies from the Andean Cordillera, in Argentina. Mean annual precipitation (MAP) and the Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) from MODIS imagery, used as a surrogate of ET, were the input variables of our empirical model. Two related biophysical indexes were generated for the whole territory of interest based on a MAP–EVI regional function calibrated for the region: the EVI Anomaly (i.e. deviation from a reference with similar MAP) and the ET Anomaly (i.e. additional water consumption besides MAP). These indexes allowed us to identify IDEs and to quantify the impact of remote lateral inflows as well as local constrains on the water balance of rangelands, and irrigated and natural oases. The performance of this satellite-based approach was evaluated through comparisons with independent ET estimates based on plot (known crop coefficients) and basin (measured water budgets) scale approaches. Relative errors in the 2–18% range at plot and basin scale are in agreement with those uncertainties reported by other satellite and physically-based approaches. Our approach provides a simple yet robust diagnostic tool to characterize water balance in arid regions, aimed to improve the identification of inflow dependent ecosystems and their management under the demanding pressures of land use and climate change. As the earth becomes a quilt of managed patches, ecohydrologists need to move from describing to predicting the consequences of human activities, using knowledge to improve human well-being. We highlight three current opportunities in ecohydrology. The first is the need for stronger research in arid and semi-arid ecosystems, where water is scarce and a tight coupling exists between hydrology and ecology. The second is to build better predictive frameworks for understanding the consequences of vegetation change. The new framework we propose here combines landscape connectivity, through recharge and discharge dynamics, with global climate. In systems where annual precipitation and evapotranspiration are similar, the evapotranspirative differences of altered vegetation can quickly tip the water balance between positive and negative, fundamentally altering water flows and biogeochemistry. The third opportunity is to use simplified agricultural systems to build and test ecohydrological theory. Such systems function under the same biophysical rules but are often better controlled and replicated than more natural ecosystems. In regions with shallow water tables, ground water may have a positive (water supply) or negative (waterlogging or salinization) impact on crops. Reciprocally, crops can influence ground water, altering water table depth and chemical composition. We quantified these reciprocal influences along natural gradients of groundwater depth in flat sedimentary landscapes of the Inland Pampas occupied by wheat, soybean, and maize during two growing seasons (2006/2007 and 2007/2008). We correlated crop yield and groundwater depth maps at the field level and made direct plant, soil and groundwater observations at the stand level across topographic gradients. Water table level largely accounted for spatial crop yield variation, explaining 20–75% of their variance. An optimum groundwater depth range, where crop yields were highest, was observed for all three crop species analyzed (1.40–2.45 m for maize, 1.20–2.20 m for soybean, and 0.70–1.65 m for wheat). The areas within these optimum bands had yields that were 3.7, 3 and 1.8 times larger than those where the water table was below 4 m for wheat, maize, and soybean, respectively. As groundwater levels become shallower than these depth bands, crop yields declined sharply (∼0.05 kg m −2 on average for every 10 cm increase in water table level), suggesting negative effects of waterlogging, root anoxia and/or salinity. Groundwater levels below these depth bands were associated with gradually declining yields, likely driven by poorer groundwater supply. Crops influenced groundwater levels through their control of recharge and discharge fluxes. The presence of active crops prevented recharge events (sharp water table level rises) observed during rainy periods in fall and spring. Crops consumed ground water generating increasing discharge as the water table depth decreased. This consumption led to rising soil and groundwater salinization towards shallower water table positions as the growing season progressed. While most landscapes respond to extreme rainfalls with increased surface water outflows, very flat and poorly drained ones have little capacity to do this and their most common responses include (i) increased water storage leading to rising water tables and floods, (ii) increased evaporative water losses, and, after reaching high levels of storage, (iii) increased liquid water outflows. The relative importance of these pathways was explored in the extensive plains of the Argentine Pampas, where two significant flood episodes (denoted FE1 and FE2) occurred in 2000?2003 and 2012?2013. In two of the most flood-prone areas (Western and Lower Pampa, 60,000 km2 each), surface water cover reached 31 and 19% during FE1 in each subregion, while FE2 covered up to 22 and 10%, respectively. From the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of the flood events, we distinguished slow floods lasting several years when the water table is brought to the surface following sustained precipitation excesses in groundwater-connected systems (Western Pampa), and ?fast? floods triggered by surface water accumulation over the course of weeks to months, typical of poor surface-groundwater connectivity (Lower Pampa) or when exceptionally strong rainfalls overwhelm infiltration capacity. Because of these different hydrological responses, precipitation and evapotranspiration were strongly linked in the Lower Pampa only, while the connection between water fluxes and storage was limited to the Western Pampa. The large global extension of arid and semi-arid regions together with their widespread degradation give these areas a high potential to sequester carbon. We explored the possibilities of semi-arid ecosystems to sequester carbon by means of rangeland exclusion and afforestation with Pinus ponderosa in NW Patagonia (Argentina). We sampled all pools where organic carbon accumulates in a network of five trios of adjacent grazed, non-grazed and afforested stands (age: 12–25 years, density 605–1052 trees ha −1 ). After 15 years since trees were planted, afforestation added ∼50% more C to the initial ecosystem carbon pool, with annual sequestration rate ranging 0.5–3.3 Mg C ha −1 year −1 . Carbon gains in afforested stands were higher above than below-ground (150% vs. 32%). Root biomass differences (374% more in afforested vs. grazed stands, p = 0.0 0 1 1 ) explained below-ground carbon contrasts whereas soil organic carbon showed no differences with afforestation. By contrast, grazing exclosures did not result in significant changes in the total carbon storage in comparison with the adjacent grazed stands ( p = 0.4 2 ) suggesting a slow ecosystem recovery in the time frame of this study (∼15 years of exclusion). Nevertheless, higher litter amount was found in the former (+53%, p = 0.0 7 ). Neither, soil organic carbon nor root carbon showed significant differences between grazed and non-grazed conditions. Considering that more than 1.1 millions of hectares of the studied ecosystems are highly degraded and suitable for tree planting, afforesting this area could result in a carbon sequestration rate of 1.7 Tg C year −1 , almost 6% of the current fossil fuel emissions of Argentina; however environmental consequences which could emerge from this deep land use shift must be taken into account when afforestation program are being designed.

Shallow water-tables strongly influence agro-ecosystems and pose difficult management challenges to farmers trying to minimize their negative effects on crops and maximize their benefits. In this paper, we evaluated how the water-table depth interacts with rainfall and sowing date to shape maize performance in the Western Pampas of Argentina. For this purpose, we analyzed the influence of water-table depth on the yields of 44 maize plots sown in early and late dates along eight growing seasons (2004-2012)that we rated as dry or wet. In addition, we characterized the influence of the water-table depth on intercepted radiation and crop water status by analyzing MODIS and Landsat images, respectively. The four conditions we evaluated (early sown-dry growing season, early-wet, late-dry, late-wet) showed similar yield response curves to water-table depth, with an optimum depth range (1.5-2.5 m) where yields were highest and stable (∼11.6 Mg ha−1on average). With water-table above this range, yields declined in all conditions at similar rates (p > 0.1), as well as the crop water status, as suggested by the Crop Water Stress Index, evidencing the negative effects of waterlogging. Water-tables deeper than the optimum range also caused declines of yield, intercepted radiation and crop water status, being these declines remarkably higher in early maize during dry seasons, evidencing a greater reliance of this condition on groundwater supply. Yield in areas with deep water-tables (>4 m) was significantly reduced to between a quarter and a half of yields observed in areas with optimum water-tables. Rainfall occurred around flowering had a strong impact on maize yield in areas with deep water-tables, but not in areas with optimum depth, where yields showed high temporal stability and independence from rainfall in that period. Our study confirmed the strong influence of water-table on rainfed maize and provides several guidelines to help farmers to take better decisions oriented to minimize hydrological risks and maximize the benefits of shallow water-tables. Vegetation changes, particularly those involving transitions between tree- and grassdominated covers, often modify evaporative water losses as a result of plant-mediated shifts in moisture access and demand. Massive afforestation of native grasslands, particularly important in the Southern Hemisphere, may have strong yet poorly quantified effects on the hydrological cycle. We explored water use patterns in Eucalyptus grandis plantations and the native humid grasslands that they replace in Central Argentina. In order to uncover the interactive effects that land cover type, soil texture and climate variability may have on evaporative water losses and water use efficiency, we estimated daily evapotranspiration (ET) in 117 tree plantations and grasslands plots across a soil textural gradient (clay-textured Vertisols to sandy-textured Entisols) using radiometric information from seven Landsat scenes, existing timber productions records, and 13 C measurements in tree stems. Tree plantations had cooler surface temperatures (� 51C on average) and evaporated more water ( 180% on average) than grasslands at all times and across all sites. Absolute ET differences between grasslands and plantations ranged from � 0.6 to 2mmday � 1 and annual up-scaling suggested values of � 630 and � 1150mmyr � 1 for each vegetation type, respectively. The temporal variability of ET was significantly lower in plantations compared with grasslands (coefficient of variation 36% vs. 49%). Daily ET increased as the water balance became more positive (accumulated balance for previous 18 days) with a saturation response in grassland vs. a continuous linear increase in plantations, suggesting lower ecophysiological limits to water loss in tree canopies compared with the native vegetation. Plantation ET was more strongly affected by soil texture than grassland ET and peaked in coarse textured sites followed by medium and fine textured sites. Timber productivity as well as 13 C concentration in stems peaked in medium textured sites, indicating lower water use efficiency on extreme textures and suggesting that water limitation was not responsible for productivity declines towards finer and coarser soils. Our study highlighted the key role that vegetation type plays on evapotranspiration and, therefore, in the hydrological cycle. Considering that tree plantations may continue their expansion over grasslands, problematic changes in water management and, perhaps, in local climate can develop from the higher evaporative water losses of tree plantations.

During the last century, the massive conversion of Australian dry forests to crops and pastures triggered the massive soil and groundwater degradation process known as dryland salinity. Currently, South American Chaco's dry forests are undergoing a similar transformation, leading global deforestation rates. The goal of this study was to review existing ecohydrological information about natural and cultivated systems in the Chaco to assess the dryland salinity risks. We review deep soil water, salt stocks, and groundwater recharge from agriculture or native dry forests stands located in a precipitation range of 450–1100 mm. We complement this with water table level records and geoelectric profiles together with personal observations. We use data from 15 Australian studies for comparison. Strong salt leaching, especially after 20 years of forest clearance, indicates the onset of deep drainage following forest conversion to agriculture in the Dry Chaco. Water stocks were more than double in the cleared stands compared to their dry forest pairs, and recharge rates were up to two order magnitude higher in agricultural areas. Although lower atmospheric salt deposition, younger sediments, and relatively high water-consuming agricultural systems in the Dry Chaco attenuate salinization risks compared to Australia, the very flat topography and related shallow water table levels of the South American region could make groundwater recharge and salt mobilization processes more widespread and difficult to manage. The lack of awareness among the general public, farmers, and decision makers about this issue amplifies the problem, making land management plans for the Argentine dry forest territories essential. In the last decades, South American ecosystems underwent important functional modifications due to climate alterations and direct human intervention on land use and land cover. Among remotely sensed data sets, NOAA-AVHRR "Normalized Difference Vegetation Index" (NDVI) represents one of the most powerful tools to evaluate these changes thanks to their extended temporal coverage. In this paper we explored the possibilities and limitations of three commonly used NOAA-AVHRR NDVI series (PAL, GIMIMS and FASIR) to detect ecosystem functional changes in the South American continent. We performed pixel-based linear regressions for four NDVI variables (average annual, maximum annual, minimum annual and intra-annual coefficient of variation) for the 1982-1999 period and (1) analyzed the convergences and divergences of significant multi-annual trends identified across all series, (2) explored the degree of aggregation of the trends using the O-ring statistic, and (3) evaluated observed trends using independent information on ecosystem functional changes in five focal regions. Several differences arose in terms of the patterns of change (the sign, localization and total number of pixels with changes). FASIR presented the highest proportion of changing pixels (32.7%) and GIMMS the lowest (16.2%). PAL and FASIR data sets showed the highest agreement, with a convergence of detected trends on 71.2% of the pixels. Even though positive and negative changes showed substantial spatial aggregation, important differences in the scale of aggregation emerged among the series, with GIMMS showing the smaller scale (11 pixels). The independent evaluations suggest higher accuracy in the detection of ecosystem changes among PAL and FASIR series than with GIMMS, as they detected trends that match expected shifts. In fact, this last series eliminated most of the long term patterns over the continent. For example, in the "Eastern Paraguay" and "Uruguay River margins" focal regions, the extensive changes due to land use and land cover change expansion were detected by PAL and FASIR, but completely ignored by GIMMS. Although the technical explanation of the differences remains unclear and needs further exploration, we found that the evaluation of this type of remote sensing tools should not only be focused at the level of assumptions (i.e. physical or mathematical aspects of image processing), but also at the level of results (i.e. contrasting observed patterns with independent proofs of change). We finally present the online collaborative initiative "Land ecosystem change utility for South America", which facilitates this type of evaluations and helps to identify the most important functional changes of the continent. [1] Vegetation change affects water fluxes and influences the direction and intensity of salt exchange between ecosystems and groundwater. In some conditions it can also lead to an intense accumulation of salts in soils and aquifers, as has been documented for the conversion of native grassland to tree plantations in the plains of Argentina, Hungary and Russia. In this paper we present a hierarchical framework to predict salt accumulation following vegetation change that is based on climatic, hydrogeological and biological factors. We evaluated this spatially explicit framework in temperate South America using a network of 32 pairs of adjacent plantation and grassland stands studied with detailed field measurements and remotely sensed imagery from MODIS. Plants, by influencing water fluxes across the ecosystem–vadose zone–aquifer continuum, can leave an imprint on salt accumulation and distribution patterns. We explored how the conversion of native grasslands to oak plantations affected the abundance and distribution of salts on soils and groundwater through changes in the water balance in naturally salt-affected landscapes of Hortobagy (Hungary), a region where artificial drainage performed ∼150 years ago lowered the water table (from −2 to −5 m) decoupling it from the surface ecosystem. Paired soil sampling and detailed soil conductivity transects revealed consistently different salt distribution patterns between grasslands and plantations, with shallow salinity losses and deep salinity gains accompanying tree establishment. Salts accumulated in the upper soil layers during pre-drainage times have remained in drained grasslands but have been flushed away under tree plantations (65 and 83% loss of chloride and sodium, respectively, in the 0 to −0.5 m depth range) as a result of a five- to 25-fold increase in infiltration rates detected under plantations. At greater depth, closer to the current water table level, the salt balance was reversed, with tree plantations gaining 2.5 kg sodium chloride m−2 down to 6 m depth, resulting from groundwater uptake and salt exclusion by tree roots in the capillary fringe. Diurnal water table fluctuations, detected in a plantation stand but not in the neighbouring grasslands, together with salt mass balances suggest that trees consumed ∼380 mm groundwater per year, re-establishing the discharge regime and leading to higher salt accumulation rates than those interrupted by regional drainage practices more than a century ago. The strong influences of vegetation changes on water dynamics can have cascading consequences on salt accumulation and distribution, and a broad ecohydrological perspective that explicitly considers vegetation–groundwater links is needed to anticipate and manage them. Policies for climate mitigation on land rarely acknowledge biophysical factors, such as reflectivity, evaporation, and surface roughness. Yet such factors can alter temperatures much more than carbon sequestration does, and often in a conflicting way. We outline a framework for examining biophysical factors in mitigation policies and provide some best-practice recommendations based on that framework. Tropical projects—avoided deforestation, forest restoration, and afforestation—provide the greatest climate value, because carbon storage and biophysics align to cool the Earth. In contrast, the climate benefits of carbon storage are often counteracted in boreal and other snow-covered regions, where darker trees trap more heat than snow does. Managers can increase the climate benefit of some forest projects by using more reflective and deciduous species and through urban forestry projects that reduce energy use. Ignoring biophysical interactions could result in millions of dollars being invested in some mitigation projects that provide little climate benefit or, worse, are counter-productive.
