We use the Milky Way neutral hydrogen (HI) absorption and emission spectra from the Galactic Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (GASKAP) Phase II Pilot survey along with toy models to investigate the effects of stacking multicomponent spectra on measurements of peak optical depth and spin temperature. Shifting spectra by the peak in emission, 'primary' components shifted to 0 km s$^{-1}$ are correctly averaged. Additional components on individual sightlines are averaged with non-centred velocities, producing a broader and shallower 'secondary' component in the resulting stack. Peak optical depths and brightness temperatures of the secondary components from stacks are lower limits of their true average values due to the velocity offset of each component. The spin temperature however is well correlated with the truth since the velocity offset of components affects the emission and absorption spectra equally. Stacking 462 GASKAP absorption-emission spectral pairs, we detect a component with a spin temperature of 1320 $\pm$ 263 K, consistent with gas from the unstable neutral medium and higher than any previous GASKAP detection in this region. We also stack 2240 pilot survey spectra containing no Milky Way absorption, revealing a primary narrow and secondary broad component, with spin temperatures belonging to the cold neutral medium (CNM). Spatially binning and stacking the non-detections across the plane-of-sky by their distance from CNM absorption detections, the primary component's optical depth decreases with distance from known locations of cold gas. Modern radio telescopes generate large amounts of data, with the next generation Very Large Array (ngVLA) and the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) expected to feed up to 292 GB of visibilities per second to the science data processor (SDP). However, the continued exponential growth in the power of the world's largest supercomputers suggests that for the foreseeable future there will be sufficient capacity available to provide for astronomers' needs in processing 'science ready' products from the new generation of telescopes, with commercial platforms becoming an option for overflow capacity. The purpose of the current work is to trial the use of commercial high performance computing (HPC) for a large scale processing task in astronomy, in this case processing data from the GASKAP-HI pilot surveys. We delineate a four-step process which can be followed by other researchers wishing to port an existing workflow from a public facility to a commercial provider. We used the process to provide reference images for an ongoing upgrade to ASKAPSoft (the ASKAP SDP software), and to provide science images for the GASKAP collaboration, using the joint deconvolution capability of WSClean. We document the approach to optimising the pipeline to minimise cost and elapsed time at the commercial provider, and give a resource estimate for processing future full survey data. Finally we document advantages, disadvantages, and lessons learned from the project, which will aid other researchers aiming to use commercial supercomputing for radio astronomy imaging. We found the key advantage to be immediate access and high availability, and the main disadvantage to be the need for improved HPC knowledge to take best advantage of the facility.

We introduce TPCNet, a neural network predictor that combines Convolutional and Transformer architectures with Positional encodings, for neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) spectral analysis. Trained on synthetic datasets, our models predict cold neutral gas fraction ($f_\text{CNM}$) and HI opacity correction factor ($R_\text{HI}$) from emission spectra based on the learned relationships between the desired output parameters and observables (optically-thin column density and peak brightness). As a follow-up to Murray et al. (2020)'s shallow Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), we construct deep CNN models and compare them to TPCNet models. TPCNet outperforms deep CNNs, achieving a 10% average increase in testing accuracy, algorithmic (training) stability, and convergence speed. Our findings highlight the robustness of the proposed model with sinusoidal positional encoding applied directly to the spectral input, addressing perturbations in training dataset shuffling and convolutional network weight initializations. Higher spectral resolutions with increased spectral channels offer advantages, albeit with increased training time. Diverse synthetic datasets enhance model performance and generalization, as demonstrated by producing $f_\text{CNM}$ and $R_\text{HI}$ values consistent with evaluation ground truths. Applications of TPCNet to observed emission data reveal strong agreement between the predictions and Gaussian decomposition-based estimates (from emission and absorption surveys), emphasizing its potential in HI spectral analysis., Comment: This paper has 27 pages, 27 figures and two tables. We present the largest Galactic neutral hydrogen HI absorption survey to date, utilizing the Australian SKA Pathfinder Telescope at an unprecedented spatial resolution of 30''. This survey, GASKAP-HI, unbiasedly targets 2,714 continuum background sources over 250 square degrees in the direction of the Magellanic Clouds, a significant increase compared to a total of 373 sources observed by previous Galactic absorption surveys across the entire Milky Way. We aim to investigate the physical properties of cold (CNM) and warm (WNM) neutral atomic gas in the Milky Way foreground, characterized by two prominent filaments at high Galactic latitudes (between $-45^{\circ}$ and $-25^{\circ}$). We detected strong HI absorption along 462 lines of sight above the 3$\sigma$ threshold, achieving an absorption detection rate of 17%. GASKAP-HI's unprecedented angular resolution allows for simultaneous absorption and emission measurements to sample almost the same gas clouds along a line of sight. A joint Gaussian decomposition is then applied to absorption-emission spectra to provide direct estimates of HI optical depths, temperatures, and column densities for the CNM and WNM components. The thermal properties of CNM components are consistent with those previously observed along a wide range of Solar neighborhood environments, indicating that cold HI properties are widely prevalent throughout the local interstellar medium. Across our region of interest, CNM accounts for ~30% of the total HI gas, with the CNM fraction increasing with column density toward the two filaments. The interstellar medium (ISM) is ubiquitously turbulent across many physically distinct environments within the Galaxy. Turbulence is key in controlling the structure and dynamics of the ISM, regulating star formation, and transporting metals within the Galaxy. We present the first observational measurements of turbulence in neutral hydrogen entrained in the hot nuclear wind of the Milky Way. Using recent MeerKAT observations of two extra-planar HI clouds above (gal. lat.$\,\sim7.0^{\circ}$) and below (gal. lat.$\,\sim-3.9^{\circ}$) the Galactic disc, we analyse centroid velocity and column density maps to estimate the velocity dispersion ($\sigma_{v,\mathrm{3D}}$), the turbulent sonic Mach number ($\mathcal{M}$), the volume density dispersion ($\sigma_{\rho/\rho_0}$), and the turbulence driving parameter ($b$). We also present a new prescription for estimating the spatial temperature variations of HI in the presence of related molecular gas. We measure these turbulence quantities on the global scale of each cloud, but also spatially map their variation across the plane-of-sky extent of each cloud by using a roving kernel method. We find that the two clouds share very similar characteristics of their internal turbulence, despite their varying latitudes. Both clouds are in the sub-to-trans-sonic Mach regime, and have primarily compressively-driven ($b\sim1$) turbulence. Given that there is no known active star-formation present in these clouds, this may be indicative of the way the cloud-wind interaction injects energy into the entrained atomic material on parsec scales., Comment: Accepted to MNRAS, 15 pages, 13 figures

The structure and dynamics of the star-forming disk of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) have long confounded us. The SMC is widely used as a prototype for galactic physics at low metallicity, and yet we fundamentally lack an understanding of the structure of its interstellar medium (ISM). In this work, we present a new model for the SMC by comparing the kinematics of young, massive stars with the structure of the ISM traced by high-resolution observations of neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) from the Galactic Australian Square Kilometer Array Pathfinder survey (GASKAP-HI). Specifically, we identify thousands of young, massive stars with precise radial velocity constraints from the Gaia and APOGEE surveys and match these stars to the ISM structures in which they likely formed. By comparing the average dust extinction towards these stars, we find evidence that the SMC is composed of two structures with distinct stellar and gaseous chemical compositions. We construct a simple model that successfully reproduces the observations and shows that the ISM of the SMC is arranged into two, superimposed, star-forming systems with similar gas mass separated by ~5 kpc along the line of sight., Comment: ApJ accepted. 20 pages, 18 figures

Turbulence plays a crucial role in shaping the structure of the interstellar medium. The ratio of the three-dimensional density contrast ($\sigma_{\rho/\rho_0}$) to the turbulent sonic Mach number ($\mathcal{M}$) of an isothermal, compressible gas describes the ratio of solenoidal to compressive modes in the turbulent acceleration field of the gas, and is parameterised by the turbulence driving parameter: $b=\sigma_{\rho/\rho_0}/\mathcal{M}$. The turbulence driving parameter ranges from $b=1/3$ (purely solenoidal) to $b=1$ (purely compressive), with $b=0.38$ characterising the natural mixture (1/3~compressive, 2/3~solenoidal) of the two driving modes. Here we present a new method for recovering $\sigma_{\rho/\rho_0}$, $\mathcal{M}$, and $b$, from observations on galactic scales, using a roving kernel to produce maps of these quantities from column density and centroid velocity maps. We apply our method to high-resolution HI emission observations of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) from the GASKAP-HI survey. We find that the turbulence driving parameter varies between $b\sim 0.3$ and $b\sim 1.0$ within the main body of the SMC, but the median value converges to $b\sim0.51$, suggesting that the turbulence is overall driven more compressively ($b>0.38$). We observe no correlation between the $b$ parameter and HI or H$\alpha$ intensity, indicating that compressive driving of HI turbulence cannot be determined solely by observing HI or H$\alpha$ emission density, and that velocity information must also be considered. We have analyzed the thermal and turbulent properties of the Low-Latitude Intermediate-Velocity Arch 1 (LLIV1). This was accomplished using archival H I emission and absorption data from two 21,cm line surveys: GHIGLS at $9.^\prime$4 resolution and DHIGLS at $1^\prime$ resolution. The spectral decomposition code $\tt{ROHSA}$ was used to model the column density of different thermal phases and also to analyze an absorption measurement against the radio source 4C~+66.09. From the latter we found spin temperature $T_{\mathrm{s}} \sim 75$K, cold gas mass fraction $f\sim0.5$, and turbulent sonic Mach number $M_t\sim3.4$. Similar to the absorption line modeling against 4C~+66.09, our best emission line decomposition model has no unstable gas across the whole field of view, suggesting that the thermal condensation and phase transition are not on-going but rather have reached an equilibrium state. The cold phase of LLIV1 appears as a collection of elongated filaments that forms a closed structure within the field decomposed. These substructures follow the orientation of the overall large scale cloud, along the diagonal of the GHIGLS field from north-west to south-east (in Galactic coordinates). The angular power spectrum of the cold phase is slightly shallower than that of the warm phase, quantifying that the cold phases have relatively more structure on small scales. Our spatially resolved map of the cold gas mass fraction in LLIV1 from DHIGLS reveals significant variations spanning the possible range of $f$, with mean and standard deviation 0.33 and 0.19, respectively., Comment: 16 pages, 16 figures

The low brightness dust emission at high Galactic latitude is of interest to study the interplay between physical processes in shaping the structure of the interstellar medium (ISM), as well as to statistically characterize dust emission as a foreground to the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). Progress in this avenue of research have been hampered by the difficulty of separating the dust emission from the Cosmic Infrared Background (CIB). We demonstrate that dust and CIB may be effectively separated based on their different structure on the sky and use the separation to characterize the structure of diffuse dust emission on angular scales where CIB is a significant component in terms of power. We use scattering transform statistics, the Wavelet Phase Harmonics (WPH), to perform a statistical component separation using Herschel SPIRE observations. This component separation is done only from observational data using non-Gaussian properties as a lever arm, and is done at a single 250 microns frequency. This method, that we validate on mock data, gives us access to non-Gaussian statistics of the interstellar dust and an output dust map essentially free from CIB contamination. Our statistical modelling characterizes the non-Gaussian structure of the diffuse ISM down to the smallest scales observed by Herschel. We recover the power-law shape of the dust power spectrum up to a wavenumber of 2 arcmin$^{-1}$ where the dust signal represents 2 percent of the total power. The output dust map reveals coherent structures at the smallest scales which were hidden by the CIB anisotropies. It opens new observational perspectives on the formation of structure in the diffuse ISM which we discuss with reference to past work. The North Celestial Pole Loop (NCPL) provides a unique laboratory for studying the early stage precursors of star formation. Uncovering its origin is key to understanding the dynamical mechanisms that control the evolution of its contents. In this study, we explore the 3D geometry and the dynamics of the NCPL using high-resolution dust extinction data and H I data, respectively. We find that material toward Polaris and Ursa Major is distributed along a plane similarly oriented to the Radcliffe wave. The Spider projected in between appears disconnected in 3D, a discontinuity in the loop shape. We find that the elongated cavity that forms the inner part of the NCPL is a protrusion of the Local Bubble (LB) likely filled with warm (possibly hot) gas that passes through and goes beyond the location of the dense clouds. An idealized model of the cavity as a prolate spheroid oriented toward the observer, reminiscent of the cylindrical model proposed by Meyerdierks et al. (1991), encompasses the protrusion and fits into arcs of warm H I gas expanding laterally to it. As first argued by Meyerdierks et al. (1991), the non-spherical geometry of the cavity and the lack of OB stars interior to it disfavor an origin caused by a single point-like source of energy or multiple supernovae. Rather, the formation of the protrusion could be related to the propagation of warm gas from the LB into a pre-existing non-uniform medium in the lower halo, the topology of which was likely shaped by past star formation activity along the Local Arm., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Understanding the initial properties of star-forming material and how they affect the star formation process is key. From an observational point of view, the feedback from young high-mass stars on future star formation properties is still poorly constrained. In the framework of the IRAM 30m ORION-B large program, we obtained observations of the translucent and moderately dense gas, which we used to analyze the kinematics over a field of 5 deg^2 around the filamentary structures. We used the ROHSA algorithm to decompose and de-noise the C18O(1-0) and 13CO(1-0) signals by taking the spatial coherence of the emission into account. We produced gas column density and mean velocity maps to estimate the relative orientation of their spatial gradients. We identified three cloud velocity layers at different systemic velocities and extracted the filaments in each velocity layer. The filaments are preferentially located in regions of low centroid velocity gradients. By comparing the relative orientation between the column density and velocity gradients of each layer from the ORION-B observations and synthetic observations from 3D kinematic toy models, we distinguish two types of behavior in the dynamics around filaments: (i) radial flows perpendicular to the filament axis that can be either inflows (increasing the filament mass) or outflows and (ii) longitudinal flows along the filament axis. The former case is seen in the Orion B data, while the latter is not identified. We have also identified asymmetrical flow patterns, usually associated with filaments located at the edge of an HII region. This is the first observational study to highlight feedback from HII regions on filament formation and, thus, on star formation in the Orion B cloud. Filamentary structures have been found nearly ubiquitously in molecular clouds and yet their formation and evolution is still poorly understood. We examine a segment of Taurus Molecular Cloud 1 (TMC-1) that appears as a single, narrow filament in continuum emission from dust. We use the Regularized Optimization for Hyper-Spectral Analysis (ROHSA), a Gaussian decomposition algorithm which enforces spatial coherence when fitting multiple velocity components simultaneously over a data cube. We analyze HC$_5$N (9-8) line emission as part of the Green Bank Ammonia Survey (GAS) and identify three velocity-coherent components with ROHSA. The two brightest components extend the length of the filament, while the third component is fainter and clumpier. The brightest component has a prominent transverse velocity gradient of $2.7 \pm 0.1$ km s$^{-1}$ pc$^{-1}$ that we show to be indicative of gravitationally induced inflow. In the second component, we identify regularly spaced emission peaks along its length. We show that the local minima between pairs of adjacent HC$_5$N peaks line up closely with submillimetre continuum emission peaks, which we argue is evidence for fragmentation along the spine of TMC-1. While coherent velocity components have been described as separate physical structures in other star-forming filaments, we argue that the two bright components identified in HC$_5$N emission in TMC-1 are tracing two layers in one filament: a lower density outer layer whose material is flowing under gravity towards the higher density inner layer of the filament., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures; Accepted for publication to MNRAS

The North Celestial Pole Loop (NCPL) provides a unique laboratory for studying the early stages of star formation, in particular the condensation of the neutral interstellar medium (ISM). Understanding the physical properties that control the evolution of its contents is key to uncovering the origin of the NCPL. Archival data from the NCPL region of the GHIGLS 21 cm line survey (9'4) are used to map its multiphase content with ${\tt ROHSA}$, a Gaussian decomposition tool that includes spatial regularization. Column density and mass fraction maps of each phase were extracted along with their uncertainties. Archival data from the DHIGLS 21 cm (1') survey are used to further probe the multiphase content of the NCPL. We have identified four spatially (and dynamically) coherent components in the NCPL, one of which is a remarkably well-defined arch moving at about $14\ {\rm km s^{-1}}$ away from us that could be a relic of the large-scale organized dynamical process at the origin of the phase transition. The cold and lukewarm phases together dominate the mass content of the neutral gas along the loop. The physical properties of galactic halo gas have a profound impact on the life cycle of galaxies. As gas travels through a galactic halo, it undergoes dynamical interactions, influencing its impact on star formation and the chemical evolution of the galactic disk. In the Milky-Way halo, considerable effort has been made to understand the spatial distribution of neutral gas, which are mostly in the form of large complexes. However, the internal variations of their physical properties remains unclear. In this study, we investigate the thermal and dynamical state of the neutral gas in HVCs. High-resolution observations (1.'1) of the 21 cm line emission in the EN field of the DHIGLS HI survey are used to analyze the physical properties of the bright concentration C I B located at an edge of complex C. We use the Gaussian decomposition code ROHSA to model its multiphase content, and perform a power spectrum analysis to analyze its multi-scale structure. Physical properties of some 200 structures extracted using dendrograms are examined. We identify two distinct regions, one of which has a prominent protrusion extending from the edge of complex C that exhibits an ongoing phase transition from warm diffuse gas to cold dense gas and filaments. The scale at which the warm gas becomes unstable and undergoes a thermal condensation is about 15 pc, corresponding to a cooling time about 1.5 Myr. We find that a transition from subsonic to trans-sonic turbulence is associated with the thermal condensation. A large scale perspective of complex C suggests that hydrodynamic instabilities are involved in creating the structured concentration C I B and the phase transition therein. However, the details of the dynamical and thermal processes remain unclear and will require further investigation, through both observations and numerical simulations. The transition from the diffuse warm neutral medium (WNM) to the dense cold neutral medium (CNM) is what set the initial conditions to the formation of molecular clouds. The properties of the turbulent cascade in the WNM, essential to describe this radiative condensation process, have remained elusive in part due to the difficulty to map out the structure and kinematics of each H I thermal phases. Here we present an analysis of a 21 cm hyper-spectral data cube from the GHIGLS HI survey where the contribution of the WNM is extracted using ROHSA, a Gaussian decomposition tool that includes spatial regularization. The distance and volume of the WNM emission is estimated using 3D dust extinction map information. The thermal and turbulent contributions to the Doppler line width of the WNM were disentangled using two techniques, one based on the statistical properties of the column density and centroid velocity fields, and another on the relative motions of CNM structures as a probe of turbulent motions. We found that the volume of WNM sampled here, located at the outer edge of the Local Bubble, shows thermal properties in accordance with expected values for heating and cooling processes typical of the Solar neighbourhood. The WNM has the properties of sub/trans-sonic turbulence, with a turbulent Mach number at the largest scale probed here (l = 130 pc) of Ms = 0.87 +- 0.15, a density contrast of 0.6 +- 0.2, and velocity and density power spectra compatible with k-11/3. The low Mach number of the WNM provides dynamical conditions that allows the condensation mode of thermal instability (TI) to grow freely and form CNM structures, as predicted by theory., Comment: 20 pages, 14 figures, 3 tables. Carbonaceous nano-grains are present at the surface of protoplanetary disks around Herbig Ae/Be stars, where most of the central star UV energy is dissipated. Efficiently coupled to the gas, nano-grains are able to trace the disk outer flaring parts, and possibly the gaps from which the larger grains are missing. We examine the spatial distribution and evolution of the nano-dust emission in the (pre-)transitional disk HD100546 that shows annular gaps, rings, and spirals, and reveals rich carbon nano-dust spectroscopic signatures (aromatic, aliphatic) in a wide spatial range (~20-200au). We analyse adaptive optics spectroscopic observations from 3 to 4um and imaging and spectroscopic observations from 8 to 12um. We compare the data to model predictions using the THEMIS model with the radiative transfer code POLARIS calculating heating of micro- and nanometric dust grains for a given disk structure. The aromatic features at 3.3, 8.6 and 11.3um, as well as, the aliphatic ones from 3.4 to 3.5um are spatially extended with band morphologies dependong on local physical conditions. The aliphatic-to-aromatic band ratio 3.4/3.3 increases with the distance from the star suggesting UV processing. In the 8-12um observed spectra, features characteristic of aromatic particles and crystalline silicates are detected with their relative contribution changing with distance to the star. The model predicts that the features and adjacent continuum are due to different combinations of grain sub-populations, with a dependence on the UV field intensity. Shorter wavelength features are dominated by the smallest grains (< 0.7nm) throughout the disk, while at longer wavelengths what dominates the emission close to the star is a mix of several grain populations, and far away from the star is the largest nano-grain population., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A, abridged abstract to comply with arxiv requirements

Faraday tomography of polarimetric observations at low frequency is a unique tool to study the structure of the magneto-ionic interstellar medium (ISM) based on Faraday depth. LOFAR data below 200 MHz revealed a plethora of features in polarization, whose origin remains unknown. Previous studies highlighted the remarkable association of such features to tracers of the magnetized-neutral ISM, as interstellar dust and atomic hydrogen (HI). However, the physical conditions responsible for the correlation between magneto-ionic and neutral media are yet to be clarified. In this letter we investigate further the correlation between LOFAR data and HI observations at 21cm from the Effelsberg-Bonn HI Survey (EBHIS). We focus on the multiphase properties of the HI gas. We present the first statistical study on the morphological correlation between LOFAR tomographic data and the cold (CNM), luke-warm (LNM), and warm (WNM) HI phases, separately. We use the Regularized Optimization for Hyper-Spectral Analysis (ROHSA) approach to decompose the HI phases based on the Gaussian decomposition of the HI spectra. In at least two fields of view -- Fields 3C196 and A -- out of four -- Fields B and C -- we find a significant correlation between LOFAR and EBHIS data using the Histograms of Oriented Gradients (HOG). The absence of correlation in Fields B and C is caused by low signal-to-noise ratio in polarization. The observed HOG correlation in Fields 3C196 and A is associated with all HI phases and it is surprisingly dominant in the CNM and LNM phases. We discuss possible mechanisms that would explain the correlation between CNM, LNM, and WNM, with polarized emission at Faraday depths up to 10 rad m$^{-2}$. We present the identification of the previously unnoticed physical association between the Corona Australis molecular cloud (CrA), traced by interstellar dust emission, and two shell-like structures observed with line emission of atomic hydrogen (HI) at 21 cm. Although the existence of the two shells had already been reported in the literature, the physical link between the HI emission and CrA was never highlighted before. We use both Planck and Herschel data to trace dust emission and the Galactic All Sky HI Survey (GASS) to trace HI. The physical association between CrA and the shells is assessed based both on spectroscopic observations of molecular and atomic gas and on dust extinction data with Gaia. The shells are located at a distance between 140 and 190 pc, comparable to the distance of CrA, which we derive as 150.5 +- 6.3 pc. We also employ dust polarization observations from Planck to trace the magnetic-field structure of the shells. Both of them show patterns of magnetic-field lines following the edge of the shells consistently with the magnetic-field morphology of CrA. We estimate the magnetic-field strength at the intersection of the two shells via the Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi (DCF) method. Albeit the many caveats that are behind the DCF method, we find a magnetic-field strength of 27 +- 8 $\mu$G, at least a factor of two larger than the magnetic-field strength computed off of the HI shells. This value is also significantly larger compared to the typical values of a few $\mu$G found in the diffuse HI gas from Zeeman splitting. We interpret this as the result of magnetic-field compression caused by the shell expansion. CO isotopologue transitions are routinely observed in molecular clouds to probe the column density of the gas, the elemental ratios of carbon and oxygen, and to trace the kinematics of the environment. We aim at estimating the abundances, excitation temperatures, velocity field and velocity dispersions of the three main CO isotopologues towards a subset of the Orion B molecular cloud. We use the Cramer Rao Bound (CRB) technique to analyze and estimate the precision of the physical parameters in the framework of local-thermodynamic-equilibrium excitation and radiative transfer with an additive white Gaussian noise. We propose a maximum likelihood estimator to infer the physical conditions from the 1-0 and 2-1 transitions of CO isotopologues. Simulations show that this estimator is unbiased and efficient for a common range of excitation temperatures and column densities (Tex > 6 K, N > 1e14 - 1e15 cm-2). Contrary to the general assumptions, the different CO isotopologues have distinct excitation temperatures, and the line intensity ratios between different isotopologues do not accurately reflect the column density ratios. We find mean fractional abundances that are consistent with previous determinations towards other molecular clouds. However, significant local deviations are inferred, not only in regions exposed to UV radiation field but also in shielded regions. These deviations result from the competition between selective photodissociation, chemical fractionation, and depletion on grain surfaces. We observe that the velocity dispersion of the C18O emission is 10% smaller than that of 13CO. The substantial gain resulting from the simultaneous analysis of two different rotational transitions of the same species is rigorously quantified. Extracting the multiphase structure of the neutral interstellar medium (ISM) is key to understand the star formation in galaxies. The radiative condensation of the diffuse warm neutral medium producing a thermally unstable lukewarm medium and a dense cold medium is closely related to the initial step which leads the HI-to-H2 transition and the formation of molecular clouds. Up to now the mapping of these phases out of 21 cm emission hyper-spectral cubes has remained elusive mostly due to the velocity blending of individual cold structures present on a given line of sight. To address this problem, we developed a new Gaussian decomposition algorithm named ROHSA (Regularized Optimization for Hyper-Spectral Analysis) based on a multi-resolution process from coarse to fine grid. ROHSA uses a regularized non-linear least-square criterion to take into account simultaneously the spatial coherence of the emission and the multiphase nature of the gas. In order to obtain a solution with spatially smooth parameters, the optimization is performed on the whole data cube at once. The performances of ROHSA were tested on a synthetic observation computed from numerical simulations of thermally bi-stable turbulence. An application on a 21 cm observation of a high Galactic latitude region from the GHIGLS survey is presented. The evaluation of ROHSA on synthetic 21 cm observations shows that it is able to recover the multiphase nature of the HI and physically meaningful information about the underlying three-dimensional fields (density, velocity and temperature). The application on a real 21 cm observation of a high Galactic latitude field produces a picture of the multiphase HI, with isolated, filamentary and narrow structures and wider, diffuse and space filling components.
