Abstract

Twisted Lie algebroid cohomologies, i.e. with values in representations, are shown to be Lie algebroid homotopy-invariant. Several important classes of examples are discussed. As an application, a generalized version of the Poincar\'e lemma is given in the transitive case. Together with the Mayer- Vietoris theorem, which holds in this more general context as well, this leads to a K\"unneth formula for the cohomologies of Lie algebroids with values in representations., Comment: 54 Pages. Abstract

Il contributo propone una rilettura pedagogica dei segnali di disagio degli adolescenti, ri-semantizzando il concetto di protezione, per ri-attivare la cura educativa all’interno della scuola come contesto educativo supportivo e promozionale. A partire dall’analisi qualitativa in relazione al “Progetto Teseo: promuovere il benessere a scuola” per il periodo 2019-2022, con il coinvolgimento di educatori e psicopedagogisti, emerge come la pandemia abbia agito da ‘evidenziatore’ e acceleratore di fragilità esistenti, facendo emergere bisogni emotivi che richiamano il riconoscimento, il riscatto di ragazzi/e, la complessità della relazione in presenza, nonché l’impoverimento dello sguardo adulto. Il progetto emerge in sintesi come ‘cantiere’ dell’educativa scolastica, aperto alla costruzione di nuovi orizzonti di possibilità per accompagnare ragazzi/e in una prospettiva di crescita e narrazione di un futuro possibile., The contribution proposes a pedagogical rereading of adolescent discomfort signs, re-semantizing the concept of protection, in view to re-activate educational care within the school as supportive and promotional educational context. Starting from the qualitative analysis in relation to “Teseo Project: promoting well-being in school” for the period 2019-2022, with the involvement of educators and educational psychologists, emerges how pandemic has acted as a ‘highlighter’ and accelerator of fragilities, disclosing emotional needs, recognition, ransom of young people, the complexity of relationship in presence, as well as the impoverishment of an adult gaze. In synthesis the project emerges as a ‘building site’ of educational school service, open to the construction of new horizons of possibilities to accompany young people towards a perspective of growth and narration of a possible future.

Abstract

A fast low noise, limited power, radiation-hard front-end chip was developed for reading out the Atlas Pixel Silicon Detector. As in the past prototypes, every chip is used to digitize and read out charge and time information from hits on each one of its 2880 inputs. The basic column readout architecture idea was adopted and modified to allow a safe transition to quarter micron technology. Each pixel cell, organized in a 160 x 18 matrix, can be independently enabled and configured in order to optimize the analog signal response and to prevent defective pixels from saturating the readout. The digital readout organizes hit data coming from each column, with respect to time, and output them on a low-level serial interface. A considerable effort was made to design state machines free of undefined states, where single-point defects and charge deposited by heavy ions in the silicon could have led to unpredicted forbidden states. Abstract

The analog front-end of pixel readout electronics with dual threshold discriminator scheme has been measured extensively to determine the optimum performance and performance limitations of the circuit. The preamplifier shows a peaking time of 20ns without capacitive load, which degrades to only 30ns with a load of 350fF. The LEVEL-discriminator has an adjustable threshold in the range of 2000 to [6000e.sup.-] with a variable separation to the TIME-discriminator threshold of 800 to [1600e.sup.-]. The circuit allows the full suppression of out-of-time signals under the conditions of 350fF capacitive load and a total power consumption of 40[[micro]Watt] per cell. The untuned threshold dispersion is measured to be [320e.sup.-] r.m.s., which reduces to [70e.sup.-] r.m.s. after threshold adjust. The overall noise of the circuit reaches a value of about [200e.sup.-] r.m.s. with 350fF capacitive load and 20nA of parallel current at the preamplifier input. Further measurements characterize the time-over-threshold (TOT) behaviour and the double-pulse resolution of the circuit.

Abstract

A low-power, sparse-scan, readout architecture has been developed for the ATLAS pixel front-end electronics. The architecture supports a dual discriminator and extracts the time over threshold (TOT) information along with a 2-D spatial address of the hits and associates them with a unique 7-bit beam crossing number. The IC implements level-1 trigger filtering along with event building (grouping together all hits in a beam crossing) in the end of column (EOC) buffer. The events are transmitted over a 40 MHz serial data link with the protocol supporting buffer overflow handling by appending error flags to events. This mixed-mode full custom IC is implemented in 0.8 [Mu] HP process to meet the requirements for the pixel readout in the ATLAS inner detector. The circuits have been tested and the IC has been found to provide dead-time-less ambiguity-free readout at 40MHz data rate.

Abstract

Solid state detectors made of Si (4.8x8 [mm.sup.2]) and GaAs (6.4x8 [mm.sup.2]) pixel matrices bump-bonded to the Omega2 and Omega3 electronic read-out systems, developed at CERN for H.E.P. experiments, have been used to obtain autoradiographic images of clusters of human epithelial cells and DNA fragments separated via electrophoresis, both labeled with 32p. The system has shown a good minimum detectable activity per unit area of 2. [10.sup.-4] cps [mm.sup.-2], and has proved linear for count rate in the range 0.2-20 cps, typical of autoradiography. The pixel dimensions are 75x500 [[[micro]meter].sup.2] (Si-Omega2) and 50x500 [[[micro]meter].sup.2] (GaAs-Omega3), respectively. We are able to clearly localize clusters of cells which have incorporated the radioactive tracer and DNA fragments on an electrophoretic gel on paper (blots).

Abstract

Kosteletzkya pentacarpos seashore mallow, is recognised as an important plant species for several industrial applications, especially in North America and Asia. In Europe, seashore mallow is highly threatened and subject of conservation actions (e.g. reintroduction). In order to define appropriate multipurpose cultivation protocols, suitable for biomass production and for conservation purposes, we investigated the effect of varying levels of soil salt content and nutrient availability on seashore mallow. As expected, seashore mallow had the best performance in terms of growth rate, flowering and fruit production when fertiliser was applied, while salt had only limited effects. Interestingly, seeds produced by fertilised plants showed a lower germination performance and higher mortality than seeds developed from non-fertilised plants. Our results highlight a trade-off between parental plant growth and seed performance, the former being enhanced and the latter being reduced by fertiliser application. The causes of this trade-off are related to a transgenerational maternal effect of fertiliser application that has important implications for seashore mallow cultivation. Biomass production benefits from fertiliser application but if the quality of seeds and the fitness of the next generation are major objectives (e.g. seed production and species conservation), fertiliser application is not recommended.

da un decennio iniziamo, con fatica e distrazione, ad acquisire il fatto che un’era geologica sembra finita e un nuovo tempo profondo, una nuova “era” geologica e culturale si diparte verso un futuro incerto, denominata Antropocene, dove l’uomo riscopre nelle sedimentazioni della terra, nei ghiacciai, nella biodiversità il proprio ruolo di cambiamento dei sistemi climatici, rimasti per qualche decina di migliaia di anni in una relativa, e discontinua, stabilità. E proprio all’Ottocento di De Andrè, a quel fulgore di macchine a vapore e poi a combustibili fossili, di treni alla conquista di territori, e con l’inizio della mercificazione e disincanto della “natura”, che si fa risalire oggi un “marcatore” geologico netto dell’inizio dell’Antropocene seguendo le tracce dell’innalzarsi dell’emissione antropiche di CO2 nei carotaggi di ghiaccio in Antartide, e il correlato aumento delle temperature medie sul globo . Una faglia epocale sembra aprirsi, dove la dimensione del futuro si mostra come minaccia catastrofica ad amplificare tante altre “crisi” delle umanità a noi accanto: il futuro è sempre più difficile da “immaginare” e sognare, mentre le dimensioni della vita sembrano schiacciarsi, vivere e sopravvivere, in un presente immediato e perpetuo del consumismo quotidiano.

Abstract

Aim The objective of the METABOLIC Study was to evaluate overall health status, with particular focus on assessment of functional status of older patients taking oral antidiabetic drug (OAD) treatment. Methods The study included 1342 type 2 diabetes patients aged ≥ 65 years treated with OADs, with or without insulin, who had been referred to outpatients clinics across Italy. Information on diabetes (duration, medications taken during the last 3 months, hypoglycaemic events and diabetic complications) was collected by questionnaire, and the patients’ overall health status was assessed using a multidimensional prognostic index. Results The sample recruited (mean age: 73.3 ± 5.5 years) had a mean duration of diabetes of 11.3 ± 8.2 years. Half were taking sulphonylureas alone or together with other medications, 9.7% were taking insulin in combination with other OADs, almost 30% were using biguanides and 6.2% were taking dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors. Also, 12% of patients reported hypoglycaemic events, 90% of whom were taking insulin or sulphonylureas. In addition, 81% of the participants were completely independent in their activities of daily living, while 19% were mildly, moderately or severely disabled. Age, female gender, hypoglycaemic events, neuropathy and low diastolic blood pressure were the main variables associated with disability. Conclusion Disability is common in older diabetic patients and some associated factors, such as hypoglycaemia and low diastolic blood pressure, have been identified. Also identified was malnutrition as a specific factor associated with hypoglycaemic events independent of the use of insulin and sulphonylureas.

Abstract

We have successfully built and characterised a small animal PET based on 4 rotating detectors with a spatial resolution [is less than] 2 mm over its field of view and a sensitivity of 640 cps/[micro]Ci at the centre. The scanner is based on four matrices of 400 YAP:Ce finger crystals (2x2x30 [mm.sup.3] each) coupled to Position Sensitive PhotoMultipliers (Hamamatsu R2486-06.) We have now applied two high resolution collimators to two opposite detectors, hence realising an integrated PET-SPECT scanner for small animals. The collimators are made of lead with 20 mm long, 0.6 mm hexagonal holes with 0.15 mm septa. The read-out and data acquisition system are handled by NIM-CAMAC standard electronics. The Field Of View (FOV) of the tomograph has a diameter of 4 cm and an axial length of 4 cm in both PET and SPECT configuration which is appropriate for mice and rat studies.

Abstract

We present an in vivo study of the optical properties of common nevi, dysplastic nevi and malignant melanoma skin lesions in human subjects. Reflectance spectra were measured on 1379 skin lesions, in the visible and near-infrared spectral regions, using a spectral imaging system, in a clinical setting. Analysis of the data using a reflectance model revealed differences between the optical properties of melanin present in nevi and melanoma lesions. These differences, which are in agreement with our previous observations on average reflectance spectra, may be potentially useful for the noninvasive characterization of pigmented skin lesions and the early diagnosis of melanoma. Abstract

Silicon pixel sensors developed by the ATLAS collaboration to meet LHC requirements and to withstand hadronic irradiation to fluences of up to $10^{15} n_eq/cm^{2}$ have been evaluated using a test beam facility at CERN providing a magnetic field. The Lorentz angle was measured and found to alter from 9.0 deg. before irradiation, when the detectors operated at 150 V bias at B=1.48 T, to 3.1 deg after irradiation and operating at 600 V bias at 1.01 T. In addition to the effect due to magnetic field variation, this change is explained by the variation of the electric field inside the detectors arising from the different bias conditions. The depletion depths of irradiated sensors at various bias voltages were also measured. At 600 V bias 280 micron thick sensors depleted to ~200 micron after irradiation at the design fluence of 1 10^{15} 1 MeV n_eq/cm2 and were almost fully depleted at a fluence of 0.5 * 10^{15} 1 MeV n_eq/cm2. The spatial resolution was measured for angles of incidence between 0 deg and 30 deg. The optimal value was found to be better than 5.3 micron before irradiation and 7.4 micron after irradiation.

Abstract

Prototype sensors for the ATLAS silicon pixel detector have been electrically characterized. The current and voltage characteristics, charge collection efficiencies, and resolutions have been examined. Devices were fabricated on oxygenated and standard detector-grade silicon wafers. Results from prototypes which examine p-stop and standard and moderated p-spray isolation are presented for a variety of geometrical options. Some of the comparisons relate unirradiated sensors with those that have received fluences relevant to LHC operation.
