Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) are known as a promising technology to improve the performance of wireless communication networks, and have been extensively studied. Movable Antennas (MA) are a novel technology that fully exploits the antenna placement for enhancing the system performance. This article aims at evaluating the impact of transmit power and number of antenna elements on the outage probability performance of an MA-enabled RIS structure (MA-RIS), compared to existing Fixed-Position Antenna RIS (FPA-RIS). The change in geometry caused by the movement of antennas and its implications for the effective number of illuminated elements, are studied for 1D and 2D array structures. Our numerical results confirm the performance advantage provided by MA-RIS, achieving 24\% improvement in outage probability, and 2 dB gain in Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR), as compared to FPA-RIS., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Quantum state comparison, utilizing metrics like fidelity and trace distance, underpins the assessment of quantum networks within quantum information theory. While recent research has expanded theoretical understanding, incorporating error analysis and scalability considerations remains crucial for practical applications. The primary contribution of this letter is to address these gaps by deriving the novel operational trace distance for multi-node networks, establishing a trace distance vs. fidelity benchmark incorporating error bounds, and bridging quantum operations with tensor network analysis. We further explore the application of tensor network tools to quantum networks, offering new analytical avenues. This comprehensive approach provides a robust framework for evaluating quantum network performance under realistic error conditions, facilitating the development of reliable quantum technologies.

This work proposes a small pattern and polarization diversity multi-sector annular antenna with electrical size and profile of ${ka=1.2}$ and ${0.018\lambda}$, respectively. The antenna is planar and comprises annular sectors that are fed using different ports to enable digital beamforming techniques, with efficiency and gain of up to 78% and 4.62 dBi, respectively. The cavity mode analysis is used to describe the design concept and the antenna diversity. The proposed method can produce different polarization states (e.g. linearly and circularly polarized patterns), and pattern diversity characteristics covering the elevation plane. With the rapid deployment of quantum computers and quantum satellites, there is a pressing need to design and deploy quantum and hybrid classical-quantum networks capable of exchanging classical information. In this context, we conduct the foundational study on the impact of a mixture of classical and quantum noise on an arbitrary quantum channel carrying classical information. The rationale behind considering such mixed noise is that quantum noise can arise from different entanglement and discord in quantum transmission scenarios, like different memories and repeater technologies, while classical noise can arise from the coexistence with the classical signal. Towards this end, we derive the distribution of the mixed noise from a classical system's perspective, and formulate the achievable channel capacity over an arbitrary distributed quantum channel in presence of the mixed noise. Numerical results demonstrate that capacity increases with the increase in the number of photons per usage.

Classical game theory is a powerful tool focusing on optimized resource distribution, allocation and sharing in classical wired and wireless networks. As quantum networks are emerging as a means of providing true connectivity between quantum computers, it is imperative and crucial to exploit game theory for addressing challenges like entanglement distribution and access, routing, topology extraction and inference for quantum networks. Quantum networks provide the promising opportunity of employing quantum games owing to their inherent capability of generating and sharing quantum states. Besides, quantum games offer enhanced payoffs and winning probabilities, new strategies and equilibria, which are unimaginable in classical games. Employing quantum game theory to solve fundamental challenges in quantum networks opens a new fundamental research direction necessitating inter-disciplinary efforts. In this article, we introduce a novel game-theoretical framework for exploiting quantum strategies to solve, as archetypal example, one of the key functionality of a quantum network, namely, the entanglement distribution. We compare the quantum strategies with classical ones by showing the quantum advantages in terms of link fidelity improvement and latency decrease in communication. In future, we will generalize our game framework to optimize entanglement distribution and access over any quantum network topology. We will also explore how quantum games can be leveraged to address other challenges like routing, optimization of quantum operations and topology design.

In this paper, the privacy of wireless transmissions is improved through the use of an efficient technique termed dynamic directional modulation (DDM), and is subsequently assessed in terms of the measure of information leakage. Recently, a variation of DDM termed low-power dynamic directional modulation (LPDDM) has attracted significant attention as a prominent secure transmission method due to its ability to further improve the privacy of wireless communications. Roughly speaking, this modulation operates by randomly selecting the transmitting antenna from an antenna array whose radiation pattern is well known. Thereafter, the modulator adjusts the constellation phase so as to ensure that only the legitimate receiver recovers the information. To begin with, we highlight some privacy boundaries inherent to the underlying system. In addition, we propose features that the antenna array must meet in order to increase the privacy of a wireless communication system. Last, we adopt a uniform circular monopole antenna array with equiprobable transmitting antennas in order to assess the impact of DDM on the information leakage. It is shown that the bit error rate, while being a useful metric in the evaluation of wireless communication systems, does not provide the full information about the vulnerability of the underlying system.

This paper explores the use of semantic knowledge inherent in the cyber-physical system (CPS) under study in order to minimize the use of explicit communication, which refers to the use of physical radio resources to transmit potentially informative data. It is assumed that the acquired data have a function in the system, usually related to its state estimation, which may trigger control actions. We propose that a semantic-functional approach can leverage the semantic-enabled implicit communication while guaranteeing that the system maintains functionality under the required performance. We illustrate the potential of this proposal through simulations of a swarm of drones jointly performing remote sensing in a given area. Our numerical results demonstrate that the proposed method offers the best design option regarding the ability to accomplish a previously established task -- remote sensing in the addressed case -- while minimising the use of radio resources by controlling the trade-offs that jointly determine the CPS performance and its effectiveness in the use of resources. In this sense, we establish a fundamental relationship between energy, communication, and functionality considering a given end application.

Industrial Internet-of-Things (IIoT) involve multiple groups of sensors, each group sending its observations on a particular phenomenon to a central computing platform over a multiple access channel (MAC). The central platform incorporates a decision fusion center (DFC) that arrives at global decisions regarding each set of phenomena by combining the received local sensor decisions. Owing to the diverse nature of the sensors and heterogeneous nature of the information they report, it becomes extremely challenging for the DFC to denoise the signals and arrive at multiple reliable global decisions regarding multiple phenomena. The industrial environment represents a specific indoor scenario devoid of windows and filled with different noisy electrical and measuring units. In that case, the MAC is modelled as a large-scale shadowed and slowly-faded channel corrupted with a combination of Gaussian and impulsive noise. The primary contribution of this paper is to propose a flexible, robust and highly noise-resilient multi-signal transmission framework based on Wavelet packet division multiplexing (WPDM). The local sensor observations from each group of sensors are waveform coded onto wavelet packet basis functions before reporting them over the MAC. We assume a multi-antenna DFC where the waveform-coded sensor observations can be separated by a bank of linear filters or a correlator receiver, owing to the orthogonality of the received waveforms. At the DFC we formulate and compare fusion rules for fusing received multiple sensor decisions, to arrive at reliable conclusions regarding multiple phenomena. Simulation results show that WPDM-aided wireless sensor network (WSN) for IIoT environments offer higher immunity to noise by more than 10 times over performance without WPDM in terms of probability of false detection.

Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices are low size, weight and power (SWaP), low complexity and include sensors, meters, wearables and trackers. Transmitting information with high signal power is exacting on device battery life, therefore an efficient link and network configuration is absolutely crucial to avoid signal power enhancement in interference-rich environment and resorting to battery-life extending strategies. Efficient network configuration can also ensure fulfilment of network performance metrics like throughput, coding rate and spectral efficiency. We formulate a novel approach of first localizing the IoT nodes and then extracting the network topology for information exchange between the nodes (devices, gateway and sinks), such that overall network throughput is maximized. The nodes are localized using noisy measurements of a subset of Euclidean distances between two nodes. Realizable subsets of neighboring devices agree with their own position within the entire network graph through eigenvector synchronization. Using communication global graph-model-based technique, network topology is constructed in terms of transmit power allocation with the aim of maximizing spatial usage and overall network throughput. This topology extraction problem is solved using the concept of linear programming.

Multiple photonic degrees of freedom can be explored to generate high-dimensional quantum states; commonly referred to as `qudits'. Qudits offer several advantages for quantum communications, including higher information capacity, noise resilience and data throughput, and lower information loss over different propagation mediums (free space, optical fibre, underwater) as compared to conventional qubits based communication system. However, qudits have been little exploited in literature, owing to their difficulty in transmission and detection. In this paper, for the first time, we develop and formulate the theoretical framework for transmission of classical information through entanglement distribution of qudits over two quantum channels in superposition of alternative causal order. For the first time we i) engineer quantum switch operation for 2-qudit systems and ii) formulate theoretical system model for entanglement distribution of qudits via quantum switch. Results show that entanglement distribution of a qudit provides a considerable gain in fidelity even with increase in noise.

In this article, we are proposing a closed-form solution for the capacity of the single quantum channel. The Gaussian distributed input has been considered for the analytical calculation of the capacity. In our previous couple of papers, we invoked models for joint quantum noise and the corresponding received signals; in this current research, we proved that these models are Gaussian mixtures distributions. In this paper, we showed how to deal with both of cases, namely (I)the Gaussian mixtures distribution for scalar variables and (II) the Gaussian mixtures distribution for random vectors. Our target is to calculate the entropy of the joint noise and the entropy of the received signal in order to calculate the capacity expression of the quantum channel. The main challenge is to work with the function type of the Gaussian mixture distribution. The entropy of the Gaussian mixture distributions cannot be calculated in the closed-form solution due to the logarithm of a sum of exponential functions. As a solution, we proposed a lower bound and a upper bound for each of the entropies of joint noise and the received signal, and finally upper inequality and lower inequality lead to the upper bound for the mutual information and hence the maximum achievable data rate as the capacity. In this paper we are interested to model quantum signal by statistical signal processing methods. The Gaussian distribution has been considered for the input quantum signal as Gaussian state have been proven to a type of important robust state and most of the important experiments of quantum information are done with Gaussian light. Along with that a joint noise model has been invoked, and followed by a received signal model has been formulated by using convolution of transmitted signal and joint quantum noise to realized theoretical achievable capacity of the single quantum link. In joint quantum noise model we consider the quantum Poisson noise with classical Gaussian noise. We compare the capacity of the quantum channel with respect to SNR to detect its overall tendency. In this paper we use the channel equation in terms of random variable to investigate the quantum signals and noise model statistically. This work proposes an electrically small 3D beamforming antenna for PHYsical Layer (PHY-layer) security. The antenna comprises two layers of stacked patch structures and is a five-mode five-port MIMO system operating around 1.85 GHz with electrical size ${ka=0.98}$ and radiation efficiency of up to ${55\%}$. By studying the properties of the excited modes, phase and amplitude control allow for unidirectional beam scanning towards any direction around the elevation and azimuth planes. PHY-layer security is investigated using the directional modulation (DM) technique, which transmits unscrambled baseband constellation symbols to a pre-specified secure direction while simultaneously spatially distorting the same constellations in all other directions. Bit Error Rate (BER) calculations reveal very low values of ${2\times10^{-5}}$ for the desired direction of the legitimate receiver, with BER${<10^{-2}}$ beamwidths of ${55^{\circ}}$ and ${58^{\circ}}$ for the azimuth and elevation planes, respectively., Comment: Conference paper

This work proposes an energy-efficient Directional Modulation (DM) scheme for on-body Internet of Things (IoT) devices. DM performance is tested using a 5-port stacked-patch MIMO antenna under two scenarios: a free space case and using a four-layer human forearm phantom to simulate the user's wrist. It is demonstrated that the scheme achieves steerable secure transmissions across the entire horizontal plane. With a low Bit Error Rate (BER) of ${1.5\times10^{-5}}$ at the desired directions, eavesdroppers experience a high error rate of up to ${0.498}$. Furthermore, this work investigates the DM performance using a subset of the stacked patches in the MIMO antenna, revealing that some combinations achieve a low BER performance using a lower antenna profile, albeit high side-lobes of BER${<10^{-2}}$ seen outside the desired region. This work proposes compact, flexible Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) antennas. The design principle is based on the excitation of different orthogonal radiating modes within the same antenna volume. Via phase control of the excited modes, beamforming is demonstrated in azimuth and elevation planes using single-layered structures. For flexibility, the antennas are designed using Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as the substrate. Numerical results demonstrate that isolation better than 23 dB is realized in all investigated antennas under different bend configurations. Moreover, the proposed technique demonstrates an antenna with unidirectional beamsteering across the entire elevation plane, and a second design realizes a bidirectional beamsteering in the horizontal plane. In this article, we propose a space spreading-assisted framework that leverages either time or frequency diversity or both to reduce interference and signal loss owing to channel impairments and facilitate the efficient operation of large-scale dense Internet-of-Things (IoT). Our approach employs dispersion of data-streams transmitted from individual IoT devices over indexed space-time (ST), space-frequency (SF) or space-time-frequency (STF) blocks. As a result, no two devices transmit on the same block; only one is activated while the rest of the devices in the network is silent, thereby minimizing possibility of interference on the transmit side. On the receive side, multiple-antenna array ameliorates performance in presence of channel impairments while exploiting array-processing gain. As interference due to superposition of multiple data-streams is killed at its root, no extra energy is wasted in fighting interference and other impairments, thereby enabling energy-efficient transmission from multiple devices over multiple access channel (MAC). To validate the proposed concept, we simulate the performance of the framework against dense IoT networks deployed in generalized indoor and outdoor scenarios in terms of probability of signal outage. Results demonstrate that our conceptualized framework benefits from interference-free transmission as well as enhancement in overall system performance.

The evolution of fifth generation (5G) networks needs to support the latest use cases, which demand robust network connectivity for the collaborative performance of the network agents, like multi-robot systems and vehicle to anything (V2X) communication. Unfortunately, the user device's limited communication range and battery constraint confirm the unfitness of known robustness metrics suggested for fixed networks, when applied to time-switching communication graphs. Furthermore, the calculation of most of the existing robustness metrics involves non-deterministic polynomial-time complexity, and hence are best-fitted only for small networks. Despite a large volume of works, the complete analysis of a $\textit{low-complexity}$ temporal robustness metric for a communication network is absent in the literature, and the present work aims to fill this gap. More in detail, our work provides a stochastic analysis of network robustness for a massive machine type communication (mMTC) network. The numerical investigation corroborates the exactness of the proposed analytical framework for temporal robustness metric. Along with studying the impact on network robustness of various system parameters, such as cluster head (CH) probability, power threshold value, network size, and node failure probability, we justify the observed trend of numerical results probabilistically.

For a continuous-input-continuous-output arbitrarily distributed quantum channel carrying classical information, the channel capacity can be computed in terms of the distribution of the channel envelope, received signal strength over a quantum propagation field and the noise spectral density. If the channel envelope is considered to be unity with unit received signal strength, the factor controlling the capacity is the noise. Quantum channel carrying classical information will suffer from the combination of classical and quantum noise. Assuming additive Gaussian-distributed classical noise and Poisson-distributed quantum noise, we formulate a hybrid noise model by deriving a joint Gaussian- Poisson distribution in this letter. For the transmitted signal, we consider the mean of signal sample space instead of considering a particular distribution and study how the maximum mutual information varies over such mean value. Capacity is estimated by maximizing the mutual information over unity channel envelope.

This work introduces a new perspective for physical media sharing in multiuser communication by jointly considering (i) the meaning of the transmitted message and (ii) its function at the end user. Specifically, we have defined a scenario where multiple users (sensors) are continuously transmitting their own states concerning a predetermined event. On the receiver side there is an alarm monitoring system, whose function is to decide whether such a predetermined event has happened in a certain time period and, if yes, in which user. The media access control protocol proposed constitutes an alternative approach to the conventional physical layer methods, because the receiver does not decode the received waveform directly; rather, the relative position of the absence or presence of energy within a multidimensional resource space carries the (semantic) information. The protocol introduced here provides high efficiency in multiuser networks that operate with event-triggered sampling by enabling a constructive reconstruction of transmission collisions. We have demonstrated that the proposed method leads to a better event transmission efficiency than conventional methods like TDMA and slotted ALOHA. Remarkably, the proposed method achieves 100\% efficiency and 0\% error probability in almost all the studied cases, while consistently outperforming TDMA and slotted ALOHA.

The recent COVID-19 pandemic has driven researchers from different spectrum to develop novel solutions that can improve detection and understanding of SARS-CoV-2 virus. In this article we propose the use of Intelligent Reflector Surface (IRS) emitting terahertz signals to detect airborne respiratory aerosol cloud that are secreted from people. Our proposed approach makes use of future IRS infrastructure to extend beyond communication functionality by adding environmental scanning for aerosol clouds. Simulations have also been conducted to analyze the accuracy of aerosol cloud detection based on a signal scanning and path optimization algorithm. Industry-led initiatives such as the Next G Alliance (NGA) are currently considering how to dimension the spectrum required to support new classes of services envisioned beyond 5G. In particular, support for URLLC brings the challenge of how to dimension stochastic wireless networks to meet stringent reliability and latency requirements. Our analysis indicates that the bandwidth needed to meet URLLC goals can be in the order of gigahertz, beyond what is available in today's mobile networks. Network densification can ease those bandwidth needs but requires new deployment strategies involving substantially larger numbers of sites. As an alternative, we consider multi-connectivity and multi-operator network sharing as efficient ways to reduce the demand for bandwidth without outright deployment of additional base stations.

In this paper, we consider millimeter Wave (mmWave) technology to provide reliable wireless network service within factories where links may experience rapid and temporary fluctuations of the received signal power due to dynamic blockers, such as humans and robots, moving in the environment. We propose a novel beam recovery procedure that leverages Machine Learning (ML) tools to predict the starting and finishing of blockage events. This erases the delay introduced by current 5G New Radio (5G-NR) procedures when switching to an alternative serving base station and beam, and then re-establish the primary connection after the blocker has moved away. Firstly, we generate synthetic data using a detailed system-level simulator that integrates the most recent 3GPP 3D Indoor channel models and the geometric blockage Model-B. Then, we use the generated data to train offline a set of beam-specific Deep Neural Network (DNN) models that provide predictions about the beams' blockage states. Finally, we deploy the DNN models online into the system-level simulator to evaluate the benefits of the proposed solution. In this paper, we present a structure for two-channel spline graph filter bank with spectral sampling (SGFBSS) on arbitrary undirected graphs. Our proposed structure has many desirable properties; namely, perfect reconstruction, critical sampling in spectral domain, flexibility in choice of shape and cut-off frequency of the filters, and low complexity implementation of the synthesis section, thanks to our closed-form derivation of the synthesis filter and its sparse structure. These properties play a pivotal role in multi-scale transforms of graph signals. Additionally, this framework can use both normalized and non-normalized Laplacian of any undirected graph. We evaluate the performance of our proposed SGFBSS structure in nonlinear approximation and denoising applications through simulations. While metasurface based intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRS) are an important emerging technology for future generations of wireless connectivity in its own right, the plans for the mass deployment of these surfaces motivate the question of their integration with other new and emerging technologies that would require mass proliferation. This question of integration and the vision of future communication systems as an invaluable component for public health motivated our new concept of Intelligent Reflector-Viral Detectors (IR-VD). In this novel scheme, we propose deployment of intelligent reflectors with strips of receptor-based viral detectors placed between the reflective surface tiles. Our proposed approach encodes information of the virus by flicking the angle of the reflected beams, using time variations between the beam deviations to represent the messages. This information includes the presence of the virus, its location and load size. The millimetre-wave spectrum provisions enormous enhancement to the achievable data rate of 5G networks. However, human blockages affecting the millimetre-wave signal can severely degrade the performance if proper resource allocation is not considered. In this paper, we assess how conventional schedulers, such as the Proportional Fair scheduler, react to the presence of blockage. Our results show that the resource allocation may disfavour users suffering from blockage, leading to low data rate for those users. To circumvent this problem, we show that the data rate of those users can be improved by using a scheduler adapted to react to upcoming blockage events. The adapted scheduler aims at proactively allocating the resources before a blockage happens, mitigating losses. Such adaptation is motivated by recent progress in blockage prediction for millimetre-wave signals in a dynamic human blockage scenario. Caching at mobile devices and leveraging cooperative device-to-device (D2D) communications are two promising approaches to support massive content delivery over wireless networks while mitigating the effects of interference. To show the impact of cooperative communication on the performance of cache-enabled D2D networks, the notion of device clustering must be factored in to convey a realistic description of the network performance. In this regard, this paper develops a novel mathematical model, based on stochastic geometry and an optimization framework for cache-assisted coordinated multi-point (CoMP) transmissions with clustered devices. Devices are spatially distributed into disjoint clusters and are assumed to have a surplus memory to cache files from a known library, following a random probabilistic caching scheme. Desired contents that are not self-cached can be obtained via D2D CoMP transmissions from neighboring devices or, as a last resort, from the network. For this model, we analytically characterize the offloading gain and rate coverage probability as functions of the system parameters. An optimal caching strategy is then defined as the content placement scheme that maximizes the offloading gain. For a tractable optimization framework, we pursue two separate approaches to obtain a lower bound and a provably accurate approximation of the offloading gain, which allows us to obtain optimized caching strategies.

Indoor areas, such as offices and shopping malls, are a natural environment for initial millimeter-wave (mmWave) deployments. While we already have the technology that enables us to realize indoor mmWave deployments, there are many remaining challenges associated with system-level design and planning for such. The objective of this article is to bring together multiple strands of research to provide a comprehensive and integrated framework for the design and performance evaluation of indoor mmWave systems. The paper introduces the framework with a status update on mmWave technology, including ongoing fifth generation (5G) wireless standardization efforts, and then moves on to experimentally-validated channel models that inform performance evaluation and deployment planning. Classification of biological neuron types and networks poses challenges to the full understanding of the brain's organisation and functioning. In this paper, we develop a novel objective classification model of biological neuronal types and networks based on the communication metrics of neurons. This presents advantages against the existing approaches since the mutual information or the delay between neurons obtained from spike trains are more abundant data compare to conventional morphological data. We firstly designed two open-access supporting computational platforms of various neuronal circuits from the Blue Brain Project realistic models, named Neurpy and Neurgen. Then we investigate how the concept of network tomography could be achieved with cortical neuronal circuits for morphological, topological and electrical classification of neurons. We extract the simulated data to many different classifiers (including SVM, Decision Trees, Random Forest, and Artificial Neuron Networks) classifying the specific cell type (and sub-group types) achieving accuracies of up to 70\%. Inference of biological network structures using network tomography reached up to 65\% of accuracy. We also analysed recall, precision and F1score of the classification of five layers, 25 cell m-types, and 14 cell e-types. Our research not only contributes to existing classification efforts but sets the road-map for future usage of cellular-scaled brain-machine interfaces for in-vivo objective classification of neurons as a sensing mechanism of the brain's structure.

Caching at mobile devices and leveraging device- to-device (D2D) communication are two promising approaches to support massive content delivery over wireless networks. The analysis of cache-enabled wireless networks is usually carried out by assuming that devices are uniformly distributed, however, in social networks, mobile devices are intrinsically grouped into disjoint clusters. In this regards, this paper proposes a spatiotemporal mathematical model that tracks the service requests arrivals and account for the clustered devices geometry. Two kinds of devices are assumed, particularly, content clients and content providers. Content providers are assumed to have a surplus memory which is exploited to proactively cache contents from a known library, following a random probabilistic caching scheme. Content clients can retrieve a requested content from the nearest content provider in their proximity (cluster), or, as a last resort, the base station (BS). The developed spatiotemporal model is leveraged to formulate a joint optimization problem of the content caching and spectrum partitioning in order to minimize the average service delay. Due to the high complexity of the optimization problem, the caching and spectrum partitioning problems are decoupled and solved iteratively using the block coordinate descent (BCD) optimization technique. To this end, an optimal and suboptimal solutions are obtained for the bandwidth partitioning and probabilistic caching subproblems, respectively. Numerical results highlight the superiority of the proposed scheme over conventional caching schemes under equal and optimized bandwidth allocations. Particularly, it is shown that the average service delay is reduced by nearly 100% and 350%, compared to the Zipf and uniform caching schemes under equal bandwidth allocations, respectively.

Devices are spatially distributed into disjoint clusters and are assumed to have a surplus memory that is utilized to proactively cache files, following a random probabilistic caching scheme. The cache offloading gain is maximized by jointly optimizing channel access and caching scheme. A closed-form caching solution is obtained and bisection search method is adopted to heuristically obtain the optimal channel access probability. The objective of the Enhanced Mobile Broadband use case in 5G networks is to deliver high capacity access to densely populated areas, like city centres, transportation hubs or convention centres. Millimetre-wave communications are the go-to technology to realise that objective, yet due to weak outdoor-to-indoor penetration, outdoor deployments will not suffice and dedicated indoor deployments will be necessary. In this article, we study dense deployments of millimetre-wave access points mounted on the ceiling, with directional antennas pointing downwards to illuminate selected spots on the ground. In this setup, the signal propagation is primarily limited by human body blockages. Therefore, we develop a body blockage model and derive an expression for the probability of blockage. Using the developed expressions and our simulation framework, we assess the impact of densification and body blockage on the achievable performance. We find that both coverage and area spectral efficiency curves exhibit non-trivial behaviour with respect to the access point density and that there is an optimal beamwidth-density configuration that only maximises either coverage or area spectral efficiency. Unpredictable nature of fading channels and difficulty in tracking channel state information pose major challenge in wireless energy harvesting communication system design. In this work, we address relay selection problem for wireless powered communication networks, where the relays harvest energy from the source radio frequency signals. A single source-destination pair is considered without a direct link. The connecting relay nodes are equipped with storage batteries of infinite size. We assume that the channel state information (CSI) on the source-relay link is available at the relay nodes. Depending on the availability of the CSI on the relay-destination link at the relay node, we propose two relay selection schemes and evaluate their outage probability. Availability of the CSI at the relay node on the relay-destination link considerably improves the performance due to additional flexibility in the relay selection mechanism. Due to absence of CSI throughout the network at the time of transmission path selection, the analysis of the problem is not tractable. Therefore, we relax our assumptions on availability of CSI and closed-form expressions of the outage probability as a function of the amount of the available harvested energy are derived for both CSI availability cases. Large scale multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) or Massive MIMO is one of the pivotal technologies for future wireless networks. However, the performance of massive MIMO systems heavily relies on accurate channel estimation. While the acquisition of channel state information (CSI) in such systems requires an increasingly large amount of training overhead as the number of users grows. To tackle this issue, in this paper, we propose a deep learning assisted blind channel estimation technique for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) based massive MIMO systems. We prove that by exploiting the asymptotic orthogonality of the massive MIMO channels, the channel distortion can be averaged out without the prior knowledge of channel impulse responses, and after some mathematical manipulation, different users transmitted data symbols can be extracted. Thus, by deploying a denoising convolutional neural network algorithm (DnCNN), we mitigate a remaining channel and noise effect to accurately detect the transmitted data symbols at the channel sounding stage. Using the detected data symbols as virtual pilots, we estimate the CSI of all the users at each BS antennas. Our simulation results testify the efficacy of our proposed technique and demonstrate that it can provide a mean square error (MSE) performance which coincides with that of the data-aided channel estimation technique., Comment: 6 pages and 4 figures

Providing seamless connectivity to unmanned aerial vehicle user equipments (UAV-UEs) is very challenging due to the encountered line-of-sight interference and reduced gains of down-tilted base station (BS) antennas. For instance, as the altitude of UAV-UEs increases, their cell association and handover procedure become driven by the side-lobes of the BS antennas. In this paper, the performance of cellular-connected UAV-UEs is studied under 3D practical antenna configurations. Two scenarios are studied: scenarios with static, hovering UAV- UEs and scenarios with mobile UAV-UEs. For both scenarios, the UAV-UE coverage probability is characterized as a function of the system parameters. The effects of the number of antenna elements on the UAV-UE coverage probability and handover rate of mobile UAV-UEs are then investigated. Results reveal that the UAV-UE coverage probability under a practical antenna pattern is worse than that under a simple antenna model. Moreover, vertically-mobile UAV-UEs are susceptible to altitude handover due to consecutive crossings of the nulls and peaks of the antenna side-lobes.

Providing connectivity to unmanned aerial vehicle-user equipments such as drones or flying taxis is a major challenge for tomorrow cellular systems. In this paper, the use of coordinated multi-point transmission for providing seamless connectivity to UAV user equipments is investigated. In particular, a network of clustered ground base stations that cooperatively serve a number of UAVUEs is considered. Two scenarios are studied: scenarios with static, hovering UAV user equipments and scenarios with mobile UAV-UEs. Under a maximum ratio transmission, a novel framework is developed and leveraged to derive upper and lower bounds on the UAV-UE coverage probability for both scenarios. Using the derived results, the effects of various system parameters such as collaboration distance, UAVUE altitude, and UAV-UE velocity on the achievable performance are studied. Results reveal that, for both static and mobile UAV user equipments, when the BS antennas are tilted downwards, the coverage probability of a high-altitude UAV-UE is upper bounded by that of ground users regardless of the transmission scheme. Moreover, for low signal-to-interference-ratio thresholds, it is shown that CoMP transmission can improve the coverage probability of UAV user equipments, e.g., from 28% under the nearest association scheme to 60% for a collaboration distance of 200m.

Providing connectivity to aerial users such as cellular connected unmanned aerial vehicles is a key challenge for future cellular systems. In this paper, the use of conjugate beamforming for simultaneous content delivery to an AU coexisting with multiple ground users is investigated. In particular, a content delivery network of uniformly distributed massive MIMO enabled ground base stations serving both aerial and ground users through spatial multiplexing is considered. For this model, the successful content delivery probability is derived as a function of the system parameters. The effects of various system parameters such as antenna down-tilt angle, AU altitude, number of scheduled users, and number of antennas on the achievable performance are then investigated. Results reveal that whenever the AU altitude is below the BS height, the antennas down-tilt angles yield an inherent tradeoff between the performance of the AU and the GUs. However, if the AU altitude exceeds the BS height, down-tilting the BS antennas with a considerably large angle improves the performance of both the AU and the GUs.

The 5G New Radio (NR) standard for wireless communications supports the millimetre-wave (mmWave) spectrum to yield unprecedented improvement of the access network capacity. However, intermittent blockages in the mmWave signal may degrade the system performance and lead to the under-utilisation of the allocated resources. To circumvent this problem, the transmission slot-time shall be adjusted according to the blockage condition, avoiding the resource under-utilisation. In this paper, we propose that the 5G NR flexible numerology should be applied to adapt the slot-time in order to mitigate the blockage effects. We validate this claim by analysing the expected data rate of a mmWave system, under a range of blockage scenarios. We show that different blockage scenarios may require different numerologies to produce best performance, and that the correct choice of numerology may improve this performance by as much as hundreds of Mbps. In this work an iterative solution to build a network lifetime-preserving sampling strategy for WSNs is presented. The paper describes the necessary steps to reconstruct a graph from application data. Once the graph structure is obtained, a sampling strategy aimed at finding the smallest number of concurrent sensors needed to reconstruct the data in the unsampled nodes within a specific error bound, is presented. An iterative method then divides the sensor nodes into sets to be sampled sequentially to increase lifetime. Results on a real-life dataset show that the reconstruction RMSE can be easily traded off for a larger number of disjoint sampling sets which improve the network lifetime linearly.

We demonstrate a distributed and a centralized 4G/5G compliant approach to minimize signaling and latency related to user mobility in cellular networks. This is crucial due to the densification of networks and the additional signaling introduced by the new 5G service based architecture. By exploiting standardized protocols, our solutions dynamically reorganize the association between nodes in Radio Access Network (RAN) and the core. We validated the proposed approaches using real user mobility datasets. Our results show that both our distributed and centralized solutions significantly reduce the signaling between core and RAN compared to the traditional approach based on geographical proximity. As a result, both approaches significantly reduce the average handover procedure processing time. Moreover, by relying on locally available information, the distributed approach can quickly adapt to changes in the user movement patterns as they happen.

An increasing number of emerging applications, e.g., internet of things, vehicular communications, augmented reality, and the growing complexity due to the interoperability requirements of these systems, lead to the need to change the tools used for the modeling and analysis of those networks. Agent-Based Modeling (ABM) as a bottom-up modeling approach considers a network of autonomous agents interacting with each other, and therefore represents an ideal framework to comprehend the interactions of heterogeneous nodes in a complex environment. Here, we investigate the suitability of ABM to model the communication aspects of a road traffic management system, as an example of an Internet of Things (IoT) network. We model, analyze and compare various Medium Access Control (MAC) layer protocols for two different scenarios, namely uncoordinated and coordinated. Besides, we model the scheduling mechanisms for the coordinated scenario as a high level MAC protocol by using three different approaches: Centralized Decision Maker, DESYNC and decentralized learning MAC (L-MAC). The results clearly show the importance of coordination between multiple decision makers in order to improve the accuracy of information and spectrum utilization of the system.

Dynamical systems are no strangers in wireless communications. Our story will necessarily involve chaos, but not in the terms secure chaotic communications have introduced it: we will look for the chaos, complexity and dynamics that already exist in everyday wireless communications. We present a short overview of dynamical systems and chaos before focusing on the applications of dynamical systems theory to wireless communications in the past 30 years, ranging from the modeling on the physical layer to different kinds of self-similar traffic encountered all the way up to the network layer. The examples of past research and its implications are grouped and mapped onto the media layers of ISO OSI model to show just how ubiquitous dynamical systems theory can be and to trace the paths that may be taken now. When considering the future paths, we argue that the time has come for us to revive the interest in dynamical systems for wireless communications. It did not happen already because of the big question: can we afford observing systems of our interest as dynamical systems and what are the trade-offs? The answers to these questions are dynamical systems of its own: they change not only with the modeling context, but also with time. In the current moment the available resources allow such approach and the current demands ask for it. We present a novel way of considering in-network computing (INC), using ideas from statistical physics. We define degeneracy for INC as the multiplicity of possible options available within the network to perform the same function with a given macroscopic property (e.g. delay). We present an efficient algorithm to determine all these alternatives. Our results show that by exploiting the set of possible degenerate alternatives, we can significantly improve the successful computation rate of a symmetric function, while still being able to satisfy requirements such as delay or energy consumption.

In this paper, we aim at maximizing the cache offloading gain for a clustered \ac{D2D} caching network by exploiting probabilistic caching and cooperative transmission among the cluster devices. Devices with surplus memory probabilistically cache a content from a known library. A requested content is either brought from the device's local cache, cooperatively transmitted from catering devices, or downloaded from the macro base station as a last resort. Using stochastic geometry, we derive a closed-form expression for the offloading gain and formulate the offloading maximization problem. In order to simplify the objective function and obtain analytically tractable expressions, we derive a lower bound on the offloading gain, for which a suboptimal solution is obtained when considering a special case. Results reveal that the obtained suboptimal solution can achieve up to 12% increase in the offloading gain compared to the Zipf's caching technique. Besides, we show that the spatial scaling parameters of the network, e.g., the density of clusters and distance between devices in the same cluster, play a crucial role in identifying the tradeoff between the content diversity gain and the cooperative transmission gain.

Providing connectivity to aerial users, such as cellular-connected unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or flying taxis, is a key challenge for tomorrow's cellular systems. In this paper, the use of coordinated multi-point (CoMP) transmission along with caching for providing seamless connectivity to aerial users is investigated. In particular, a network of clustered cache-enabled small base stations (SBSs) serving aerial users is considered in which a requested content by an aerial user is cooperatively transmitted from collaborative ground SBSs. For this network, a novel upper bound expression on the coverage probability is derived as a function of the system parameters. The effects of various system parameters such as collaboration distance and content availability on the achievable performance are then investigated. Results reveal that, when the antennas of the SBSs are tilted downwards, the coverage probability of a high-altitude aerial user is upper bounded by that of a ground user regardless of the transmission scheme. Moreover, it is shown that for a low signal-to-interference-ratio (SIR) threshold, CoMP transmission improves the coverage probability for aerial users from 10% to 70% under a collaboration distance of 200 m.

Devices can retrieve the requested files from their caches, from neighbouring devices in their proximity (cluster), or from the base station as a last resort. Three key performance metrics are optimized in this paper, namely, the offloading gain, energy consumption, and latency.

In this paper, we focus on one of the key technologies for the fifth-generation wireless communication networks, massive multiple-input-multiple-output (mMIMO), by investigating two of its most relevant architectures: 1) to provide in-band backhaul for the ultra-dense network (UDN) of self-backhauled small cells (SCs), and 2) to provide direct access (DA) to user equipments (UEs). Through comprehensive 3GPP-based system-level simulations and analytical formulations, we show the end-to-end UE rates achievable with these two architectures. Differently from the existing works, we provide results for two strategies of self-backhauled SC deployments, namely random and ad-hoc, where in the latter SCs are purposely positioned close to UEs to achieve line-of-sight (LoS) access links. We also evaluate the optimal backhaul and access time resource partition due to the in-band self-backhauling (s-BH) operations. Our results show that the ad-hoc deployment of self-backhauled SCs closer to the UEs with optimal resource partition and with directive antenna patterns, provides rate improvements for cell-edge UEs that amount to 30% and tenfold gain, as compared to mMIMO DA architecture with pilot reuse 3 and reuse 1, respectively.
