1. Reviews of Research on the Attitude-Behavior Relationship and Their Implications for Future Environmental Education Research

Abstract

Since the early days of the field, attitude-behavior (A-B) relationships have received sustained attention in the evaluation and researching of environmental education (EE). This level of interest extends beyond the field's scope though, in part due to a certain reliance on theoretical and empirical assertions which claim that attitudes serve as a strong precursor and/or predictor of behavior. In this paper, we consider reviews of studies on the A-B relationship in EE and other fields that routinely challenge such assumptions, leading to the questioning of corresponding foci and commitments for research, evaluation, practice, and development. With key findings from these studies hand, we highlight several insights that may be useful for dispelling some of the folklore about what matters in, and what can be argued with, A-B studies, if we are to develop the design, conduct, reporting, and critique of studies and practices of EE reliant on such relationships.

2. An Overview of an Issue and Action Instruction Program for Stewardship Education.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to summarize an issue instruction environmental education program developed by Harold Hungerford and his associates over the past three decades. The primary focus of the issue instruction program is on the development and application of investigation and evaluation skills to environmental problems and issues. Program materials take a structured approach to the development of these skills and encourage the teacher to become a guide and facilitator during the skill application. The paper documents the development of various program elements and summarizes related research used to further refine and extend the program. (Contains 120 references and 5 tables.) (Author/YDS)

3. Improving Students' Inquiry Skills and Self-Efficacy through Research-Inspired Modules in the General Chemistry Laboratory

Abstract

Research projects conducted by faculty in STEM departments served as the inspiration for a new curriculum of inquiry-based, multiweek laboratory modules in the general chemistry 1 course. The purpose of this curriculum redesign was to improve students' attitudes about chemistry as well as their self-efficacy and skills in performing inquiry activities. Students' ability to plan experiments and interpret data improved throughout the semester, as did their confidence in conducting research-like lab activities. Improved confidence was observed among men and women, science and engineering students, and Caucasian and international students. These outcomes are similar to those found with authentic research-based experiments. The curriculum had less of an impact on students' attitudes about chemistry. A research-inspired curriculum offers many benefits to students without the difficulties of designing actual research-based projects for general chemistry classes.

4. Content Analysis of Selected Features of K-8 Environmental Education Research Studies in Turkey, 1997-2007

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze environmental education research (EER) in Turkey conducted in Grades K-8 and published over the years 1997-2007. Due to the fact that there had been no systematic reviews of EER in Turkey prior to this time period, it was more appropriate to explore the implications of the results of this review for research policies and practices than for educational policies and practices in Grades K-8. A substantial search of the international and national literature revealed 53 studies that fit the time frame and study characteristics. Three analyses of these studies were undertaken: (a) features of the research method; (b) socio-demographic characteristics of the subjects; and (c) components of environmental literacy assessed. Three charts were constructed to support these analyses; e.g., one for each analysis. For analysis (a), quantitative surveys were the most common method. For analysis (b), greater attention was paid to the age, grade level, gender and residence of participating students. For analysis (c), greater attention was paid to knowledge of ecology and natural history, and knowledge of environmental problems and issues, less attention was paid to components of affect, and very little attention was paid to socio-political-economic knowledge, cognitive skills and environmentally responsible behavior. Abstract

This publication abstracts periodicals between 1981 and 1990 and identifies dissertation research reported between 1971 and 1990 as a tool for professors, graduate students, and other professionals with environmental education research interests. This publication was designed to allow users to locate citations and abstracts relevant to their interests in environmental education quickly and easily. There is a major division between periodical literature abstracts and dissertation abstracts. Each of these has an introduction to the abstracts and an identification of the descriptors which have been used in their cataloguing. The periodical literature abstracts (1981-1990), which are numbered 001-211, are followed by an index for the periodical literature according to author and descriptor. The dissertation abstracts are separated into two groups, one covering the period 1971-1980, numbered 212-522, and the dissertation abstracts for 1981-1990, numbered 523-829. Each period is followed by a dissertation abstract descriptor index for that period. The dissertation abstracts 1981-1990 are also followed by the dissertation abstract author index for the complete period 1971-1990.
