Chlorella vulgaris has antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties, as well as the probiotic that is important for keeping the intestinal microbiota balanced. The objective was to test the impact of supplementation with microalgae and/or probiotics on broiler chickens' performance, immunity, and intestinal microbiota. The experimental design was in randomized blocks in a 4x2 factorial scheme, with four levels of inclusion of C. vulgaris (0; 0.25; 0.50 and 1%) associated or not with a commercial probiotic with five replications of 26 chickens per experimental unit. The results showed that probiotics improved feed conversion. Probiotics increased the productivity index only at 0.25% C. vulgaris supplementation. There was a reduction in spleen weight at 42 days of age in chickens fed with probiotics, but the different treatments did not alter serum antibodies. Sampling age had a significant impact on richness addressed by the number of observed genera and diversity addressed by the Shannon index. The most abundant phylum in the chicken intestinal tract was Firmicutes followed by Bacteroidetes and Proteobacteria. Bifidobacterium spp. was found in animals receiving 1% microalgae and probiotics on day 42, suggesting that this genus has benefited from microalgae supplementation. It is concluded that the probiotic and C. vulgaris have the potential to improve performance without causing major changes in the immunity and cecal microbiota.

The pathogenesis of anal sacculitis has not been extensively investigated, although atopic dogs seem to be predisposed to the disease. The aim of this study was therefore to characterize and compare the bacterial microbiota and pro-inflammatory cytokines in the anal sacs of dogs from three groups (healthy dogs, untreated atopic dogs and atopic dogs receiving antipruritic treatment or allergen-specific immunotherapy) in order to determine whether changes could be at the origin of anal sacculitis in atopic dogs. Bacterial populations of anal sac secretions from fifteen healthy dogs, fourteen untreated and six treated atopic dogs were characterized by sequencing the V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene using Illumina technology. Proinflammatory cytokines were analyzed with the Luminex multiplex test. Community membership and structure were significantly different between the anal sacs of healthy and untreated atopic dogs (P = 0.002 and P = 0.003, respectively) and between those of untreated and treated atopic dogs (P = 0.012 and P = 0.017, respectively). However, the community structure was similar in healthy and treated atopic dogs (P = 0.332). Among the proinflammatory cytokines assessed, there was no significant difference between groups, except for interleukin 8 which was higher in the anal sacs of untreated atopic dogs compared to treated atopic dogs (P = 0.02), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha which was lower in the anal sacs of healthy dogs compared to treated atopic dogs (P = 0.04). These results reveal a dysbiosis in the anal sacs of atopic dogs, which may partially explain the predisposition of atopic dogs to develop bacterial anal sacculitis. Treatments received by atopic dogs (oclacitinib, desloratadine and allergen-specific immunotherapy) shift the microbiota of the anal sacs towards that of healthy dogs. Further studies are required to identify significant cytokines contributing to anal sacculitis in atopic dogs.

Nanoparticles have shown great potential in many sectors of the oil and gas industry, including enhanced oil recovery (EOR). They can be used to improve water flooding by altering the wettability of the porous medium, reducing the interfacial tension, blocking pores, or preventing asphaltene precipitation. Ensuring the stability of nanofluids injected into reservoirs is essential and a great challenge. However, high temperature favors particle collisions and high salinity (ionic strength) decreases electrostatic repulsion between particles. Therefore, nanofluids are extremely unstable at reservoir conditions. In this paper, we investigated the effects of electrolytes (brine and seawater) and temperature (up to 80 °C) on the stability of silica nanofluids. The nanofluids are characterized by dynamic light scattering (size), turbidity (stability), and zeta potential (electrostatic repulsions). One solution to increase the stability is to compensate for the loss of repulsive forces due to salts in the solution through increased electrostatic and/or steric repulsions by changing the pH of the base fluid. At high ionic strength (42 g/L NaCl and seawater), the stability of 0.1 and 0.5 wt% silica nanofluids at basic pH is about one day, regardless of temperature. In contrast, at pH 1.5, the nanofluids have a stability of at least three weeks at 80 °C. The results obtained with base fluids containing divalent cations confirmed their more destabilizing effect. This study confirmed that it is possible to stabilize silica nanofluids beyond one month at reservoir conditions just by lowering the pH near the isoelectric point.

This study aimed to investigate the effect of age and genetics on the fecal microbiota of beef calves. Ten purebred Nellore (Bos taurus indicus) and ten crossbreed 50% Nellore-50% European breed (Bos taurus taurus) calves co-habiting on the same pasture paddock had fecal samples collected on days five (5 d), 14 d, 28 d, 60 d, 90 d, 180 d, 245 d (weaning) and 260 d after birth. All calves were kept with their mothers, and six Nellore dams were also sampled at weaning. Microbiota analysis was carried out by amplification of the V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene following high-throughput sequencing with a MiSeq Illumina platform. Results revealed that bacterial richness increased with age and became more similar to adults near weaning. Differences in microbiota membership between breeds were found at 60 d and 90 d and for structure at 60 d, 90 d, 245 d, and 260 d (p < 0.05). In addition, crossbreed calves presented less variability in their microbiota. In conclusion, the genetic composition significantly impacted the distal gut microbiota of calves co-habiting in the same environment, and further studies investigating food intake can reveal possible associations between microbiota composition and performance.

Understanding the importance of intestinal microbiota in horses and the factors influencing its composition have been the focus of many studies over the past few years. Factors such as age, diet, antibiotic administration, and geographic location can affect the gut microbiota. The intra- and inter-individual variability of fecal microbiota in horses complicates its interpretation and has hindered the establishment of a clear definition for dysbiosis. Although a definitive causal relationship between gut dysbiosis in horses and diseases has not been clearly identified, recent research suggests that dysbiosis may play a role in the pathogenesis of various conditions, such as colitis and asthma. Prebiotics, probiotics, and fecal microbiota transplantation to modulate the horse’s gastrointestinal tract may eventually be considered a valuable tool for preventing or treating diseases, such as antibiotic-induced colitis. This article aims to summarize the current knowledge on the importance of intestinal microbiota in horses and factors influencing its composition, and also to review the published literature on methods for detecting dysbiosis while discussing the efficacy of gut microbiota manipulation in horses.

Abstract Background Intestinal health remains a key factor in animal production because it is essential for digestion, absorption and bacterial fermentation. Feed additives have been used to attenuate the weaning stress such as Zinc Oxide (ZnO) and benzoic acid (C7H6O2). The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of of benzoic acid and probiotics (BA + P) on performance, diarrhea and cecal microbiota of piglets in the nursery phase (23 to 65 days). Results One hundred and sixty weaned piglets with an initial weight of 6.335 ± 0.698 kg and 23 days of age were submitted to four treatments: supplementation with 2500 ppm of Zinc oxide (ZnO), supplementation with a commercial blend of benzoic acid and probiotics (Bacillus licheniformis, Bacillus subtilis and Enterococcus faecium NCIMB 10415; Vevogut P®) (BA + P), supplementation with Zinc oxide plus benzoic acid and probiotics (ZnO + BA + P), and controls receiving only the basal diet without any supplementation. At 65 days of age, 32 piglets (n = 8 per treatment) were slaughtered for the evaluation of the cecal microbiota. Supplementation with ZnO and BA + P were associated with better feed conversion (P

Canine prostate cancer (PC) presents a poor antitumor response, usually late diagnosis and prognosis. Toceranib phosphate (TP) is a nonspecific inhibitor of receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs), including vascular endothelial growth factor receptor (VEGFR), platelet-derived growth factor receptor (PDGFR), and c-KIT. This study aimed to evaluate VEGFR2, PDGFR-β, and c-KIT protein expression in two established canine PC cell lines (PC1 and PC2) and the transcriptome profile of the cells after treatment with TP. Immunofluorescence (IF) analysis revealed VEGFR2 and PDGFR-β protein expression and the absence of c-KIT protein expression in both cell lines. After TP treatment, only the viability of PC1 cells decreased in a dose-dependent manner. Transcriptome and enrichment analyses of treated PC1 cells revealed 181 upregulated genes, which were related to decreased angiogenesis and cell proliferation. In addition, we found upregulated PDGFR-A, PDGFR-β, and PDGF-D expression in PC1 cells, and the upregulation of PDGFR-β was also observed in treated PC1 cells by qPCR. PC2 cells had fewer protein-protein interactions (PPIs), with 18 upregulated and 22 downregulated genes; the upregulated genes were involved in the regulation of parallel pathways and mechanisms related to proliferation, which could be associated with the resistance observed after treatment. The canine PC1 cell line but not the PC2 cell line showed decreased viability after treatment with TP, although both cell lines expressed PDGFR and VEGFR receptors. Further studies could explain the mechanism of resistance in PC2 cells and provide a basis for personalized treatment for dogs with PC.

All current studies have used Illumina short-read sequencing to characterize the equine intestinal microbiota. Long-read sequencing can classify bacteria at the species level. The objectives of this study were to characterize the gut microbiota of horses at the species level before and after trimethoprim sulfadiazine (TMS) administration and to compare results with Illumina sequencing. Nine horses received TMS (30 mg/kg) orally for 5 days twice a day to induce dysbiosis. Illumina sequencing of the V4 region or full-length PacBio sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene was performed in fecal samples collected before and after antibiotic administration. The relative abundance and alpha diversity were compared between the two technologies. PacBio failed to classify the equine intestinal microbiota at the species level but confirmed Bacteroidetes as the most abundant bacteria in the feces of the studied horses, followed by Firmicutes and Fibrobacteres. An unknown species of the Bacteroidales order was highly abundant (13%) and deserves further investigation. In conclusion, PacBio was not suitable to classify the equine microbiota species but detected greater richness and less unclassified bacteria. Further efforts in improving current databanks to be used in equine studies are necessary.

Este trabalho foi desenvolvido com ojetivo de compreender a influência de uma liderança consultiva nas relações de confiança e comprometimento dentro de uma unidade de operações especiais, mais especificamente no Batalhão de Operações Policiais Especiais da Polícia Militar do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. Apresentam-se os resultados de um estudo em que se utilizaram métodos quantitativos e qualitativos, com entrevistas em profundidade e questionários estruturados. A amostra é composta por 128 respondentes, de um total de 400 policiais. Os resultados apontam para uma relação direta entre um estilo de liderança consultivo e as confianças pessoal e profissional no líder. Conclui-se que liderança e confiança explicam parcialmente a qualidade da coordenação informal nas equipes da unidade, e são esses mesmos fatores que explicam a propensão ao risco extremo para as operações e o foco em resultados.

Previous studies showed that Nelore calves’ active production of immunoglobulins is delayed compared to Canchim and Limousin calves, characterizing a possible physiologic difference between taurine and Zebu calves. In this study we compared serum proteins of Nelore and Holstein calves from birth to six months old. Blood samples were taken from 50 healthy calves (30 Nelore and 20 Holstein) in the following ages: 24 to 36 hours of life, and 15, 30, 60, 90, 120, 150 and 180 days. Serum total protein concentrations were measured by colorimetry; albumin, alfa, beta and gammaglobulin concentrations were measured by agarose gel electrophoresis; and IgG concentrations were estimated by the zinc sulphate turbidity test. A repeated measure ANOVA was used to test age effect. The passive transfer of immunity was successful in both breeds and the variation of serum proteins followed the normal pattern throughout the first six months of life. There were breed differences in serum gammaglobulin concentrations. The levels of gammaglobulin were higher at the end of the first day of life, and decreased to the lowest levels at 60 days in Nelore calves and 30 days in Holstein calves. The increase due to the active production of antibodies was precocious in Holstein calves (beginning at 60 days) and slower in Nelore calves (beginning at 90 days), demonstrating that Zebu calves can, in fact, develop active immunity capability later than taurine calves.Estudos anteriores comprovaram que a produção ativa de imunoglobulinas é mais tardia em bezerros Nelore do que nos das raças Canchim ou Limousin, caracterizando possível diferença fisiológica entre zebuínos e taurinos. Esse trabalho tem o objetivo de comparar o proteinograma sérico de bezerros Nelore e Holandeses até os seis meses de vida. Amostras de sangue foram colhidas de 50 bezerros aparentemente sadios, 30 da raça Nelore e 20 da raça Holandesa, entre 24 e 36 horas de vida e aos 15, 30, 60, 90, 120, 150 e 180 dias. Determinaram-se as concentrações séricas de proteína total por colorimetria, das frações albumina, alfa, beta e gamaglobulinas por eletroforese em gel de agarose e de IgG estimada por meio do método de turvação pelo sulfato de zinco. Empregou-se a análise de variância de medidas repetidas. A transferência de imunidade passiva foi bem sucedida nos bezerros das duas raças e as variações das proteínas séricas obedeceram a um padrão de comportamento fisiológico ao longo dos seis primeiros meses de vida. A curva de variação das gamaglobulinas representou a principal diferença entre as raças. As concentrações mais elevadas ao término do primeiro dia de vida declinaram até os valores mais reduzidos aos 60 dias na raça Nelore e aos 30 dias na raça Holandesa. A elevação subsequente resultante da produção ativa de anticorpos foi mais precoce nos bezerros Holandeses (a partir dos 60 dias de vida) e mais tardia nos Nelore (a partir dos 90 dias de vida), o que indica que o desenvolvimento da capacidade de imunidade ativa pode ser de fato mais lento em zebuínos do que nos taurinos.

Wettability has a dramatic impact on fluid displacement in porous media. The pore level physics of one liquid being displaced by another is a strong function of the wetting characteristics of the channel walls. However, the quantification of the effect is still not clear. Conflicting data have shown that in some oil displacement experiments in rocks, the volume of trapped oil falls as the porous media becomes less water-wet, while in some microfluidic experiments the volume of residual oil is higher in oil-wet media. The reasons for this discrepancy are not fully understood. In this study, we analyzed oil displacement by water injection in two microfluidic porous media with different wettability characteristics that had capillaries with constrictions. The resulting oil ganglia size distribution at the end of water injection was quantified by image processing. The results show that in the oil-wet porous media, the displacement front was more uniform and the final volume of remaining oil was smaller, with a much smaller number of large oil ganglia and a larger number of small oil ganglia, when compared to the water-wet media.

The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of caffeine supplementation and intermittent exercise on the muscle injury markers in soccer players. 15 male professional soccer players completed a placebo controlled double blind test protocol. 45 minutes before exercise, participants ingested 5.5 mg.kg-1 body mass of caffeine (EXP, n=8) or placebo (CONT, n=7). The exercise was 12 sets of 10 sprints (20 m each) with 10 sec recovery time between sprints and 2 min between sets. Blood samples were collected before (PRE) and 48h after exercise (POST). Serum activity of CK, LDH, AST, and ALT were quantified. Serum enzyme activity was enhanced by exercise in both groups, without a synergistic effect of caffeine. The findings suggest muscle injury markers concentration increases after physical activities, but caffeine supplementation (as used in this study) has no influence upon muscle cellular integrity.O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da cafeína e do exercício intermitente nos marcadores de lesão muscular em jogadores de futebol. 15 jogadores de futebol profissional completaram um estudo duplo-cego placebo controlado. 45 minutos antes do exercício, os participantes ingeriram 5.5 mg.kg-1 do peso corporal de cafeína (EXP, n=8) ou placebo (CONT, n=7). O exercício consistiu em 12 séries de 10 sprints (com 20 m cada) com 10 segundos de recuperação entre os sprints e 2 min entre as séries. Amostras de sangue foram coletadas antes (PRE) e 48h depois do exercício (POST). As atividades séricas de CK, LDH, AST e ALT foram quantificadas. A atividade sérica de todas as enzimas aumentou em ambos os grupos, sem efeito sinérgico da suplementação de cafeína. Os achados confirmam que o exercício aumenta a atividade sérica das enzimas, mas a cafeína (como a usada neste estudo) não interfere na integridade da fibra muscular.

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), a mycotoxin found in food and feed, exerts harmful effects on humans and animals. The liver is the earliest target of AFB1, and its effects have been evaluated in animal models exposed to acute or chronic doses. Considering the possibility of sporadic ingestion of AFB1-contaminated food, this study investigated the impact of a single oral dose of AFB1 on liver function/cytokines and the lymphoproliferative response in mice. C57BL/6 mice were treated with a single oral AFB1 dose (44, 442 or 663 μg AFB1/kg of body weight) on the first day. Liver function (ALT, γ-GT, and total protein), cytokines (IL-4, IFN-γ, and IL-17), histopathology, and the spleen lymphoproliferative response to mitogens were evaluated on the 5th day. Although AFB1 did not produce any significant changes in the biochemical parameters, 663 μg AFB1/kg-induced hepatic upregulation of IL-4 and IFN-γ, along with liver tissue injury and suppression of the lymphoproliferative response to ConA (p < 0.05). In conclusion, a single oral dose of AFB1 exposure can induce liver tissue lesions, liver cytokine modulation, and immune suppression in C57BL/6 mice.

A complexidade da análise de políticas públicas leva gestores e administradores a adotarem uma série de modelos analíticos que os auxiliem no processo decisório e na avaliação dos possíveis reflexos de suas propostas. Dentre esses modelos, a teoria do julgamento social é uma ferramenta amplamente utilizada para avaliar o processo decisório e como este pode ser aperfeiçoado para melhor atender às demandas públicas atuais. Este artigo traz uma introdução à teoria do julgamento social, comentando algumas limitações e sugestões para sua aplicação no cenário brasileiro.
