This work investigated the catalytic high-pressure CO

Cannabis sativa L. is a multi-purpose crop, whose resilience, adaptability and soil-enriching properties make it a low-impact production. In the last years, the cultivation of the “industrial” hemp varieties (THC &lt, 0.2%) has been promoted by many Countries, opening a whole new market of hemp-derived products, such as its essential oil (EO). Its distillation might represent an effective method to exploit a residue of the hemp fiber production (flowers), complying with the guidelines of the circular economy. In the present work, different concentrations of an ionic liquid (IL, 1,3-dimethyl-1H-imidazol-3-ium dimethylphosphate) have been studied as a pre-hydrodistillation maceration medium. The EO yields have been evaluated, and their compositions have been analyzed by GC-EIMS. The use of 100% and 90% IL concentrations gave a hydrodistillation yield increment of 250% and 200%, respectively. The 200% yield increase was maintained when the 100% IL was recycled after the hydrodistillation. The lower IL concentrations incremented the cannabinoid and oxygenated sesquiterpene contents, while the opposite was true for sesquiterpene hydrocarbons. The proposed IL-enhanced hydrodistillation medium applied to hemp, studied for the first time in the present work, might be used to both (i) noteworthy increment the hydrodistillation yield and (ii) modulate the obtained EO composition based on the desired final product.

The concept of phytoequivalence was developed in Germany in mid-1990 to indicate that a herbal extract is equivalent to another one, more specifically, to a clinically validated one. The pharmacological/physiological activity of an extract is related to its composition, but, due to the presence of many constituents, reliable technique are necessary to compare extracts. While the concept of equivalence among pure chemicals or isolated substances is feasible using the modern chromatographic and spectroscopic technology, specific guideline for herbal extracts or botanicals are still missing. This is mainly due to the multicomponent nature of the herbal extracts and to the natural variability of their constituents. Nevertheless, by using mathematical and/or chemometric approaches, the concept of phytoequivalence can be precisely addressed, as exemplified by a series of examples that are discussed in detail. Helpful practical recommendations based on literature data and personal experience are presented.

Microgreens are the seedlings of herbs and vegetables which are harvested at the development stage of their two cotyledonary leaves, or sometimes at the emergence of their rudimentary first pair of true leaves. They are functional foods, the consumption of which is steadily increasing due to their high nutritional value. The species of the Brassicaceae family are good sources of bioactive compounds, with a favorable nutritional profile. The present study analyzed some phytochemical compounds with nutritional values, such as chlorophylls, polyphenols, carotenoids, anthocyanins, ascorbic acid, total and reducing sugars, and the antioxidant activity of five Brassicaceae species: broccoli (Brassica oleracea L.), daikon (Raphanus raphanistrum subsp. sativus (L.) Domin), mustard (Brassica juncea (L.) Czern.), rocket salad (Eruca vesicaria (L.) Cav.), and watercress (Nasturtium officinale R.Br.). Broccoli had the highest polyphenol, carotenoid and chlorophyll contents, as well as a good antioxidant ability. Mustard was characterized by high ascorbic acid and total sugar contents. By contrast, rocket salad exhibited the lowest antioxidant content and activity. The essential oil (EO) composition of all of these species was determined in order to identify their profile and isothiocyanates content, which are compounds with many reported health benefits. Isothiocyanates were the most abundant group in broccoli (4-pentenyl isothiocyanate), mustard (allyl isothiocyanate), and watercress (benzyl isothiocyanate) EOs, while rocket salad and daikon exhibited higher contents of monoterpene hydrocarbons (myrcene) and oxygenated diterpenes (phytol), respectively. Broccoli microgreens exhibited the overall best nutritional profile, appearing as the most promising species to be consumed as a functional food among those analyzed.

Comprehensive evidence-based guidelines and well-validated assessment scales for pain in people with hemophilia (PwH) are needed. Here, we report 28 statements covering five topics on pain assessment and management in pediatric and adult PwH that were developed by 60 Italian hemophilia specialists during a Delphi consensus process. Overall, a clear consensus was achieved for 19 of the 28 statements. Consensus was reached on all statements on the topic of pain assessment and quality of life (QoL), including the need for regular pain assessment on a quantitative scale, the importance of distinguishing between different pain types, and the need to evaluate the impact of pain on patient QoL. The other four topics concerned acute and chronic pain management in adults and in children. Consensus was reached on statements regarding non-pharmacologic treatment and the use of first-line paracetamol (acetaminophen). There was a lack of consensus regarding the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitors, or opioids.

Little is known about the role of iodine in plant physiology. We evaluated the impact of low concentrations of iodine on the phenotype, transcriptome and proteome of Arabidopsis thaliana. Our experiments showed that removal of iodine from the nutrition solution compromises plant growth, and restoring it in micromolar concentrations is beneficial for biomass accumulation and leads to early flowering. In addition, iodine treatments specifically regulate the expression of several genes, mostly involved in the plant defence response, suggesting that iodine may protect against both biotic and abiotic stress. Finally, we demonstrated iodine organification in proteins. Our bioinformatic analysis of proteomic data revealed that iodinated proteins identified in the shoots are mainly associated with the chloroplast and are functionally involved in photosynthetic processes, whereas those in the roots mostly belong and/or are related to the action of various peroxidases. These results suggest that iodine should be considered as a plant nutrient.

Saw palmetto (Serenoa repens, SP) is the most expensive oil source of the pharmaceutical and healthfood market, and its high cost and recurrent shortages have spurred the development of designer blends of fatty acids to mimic its phytochemical profile and fraudulently comply with the current authentication assays. To detect this adulteration, the combined use of isotopic fingerprint and omic analysis has been investigated, using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to handle the complex databases generated by these techniques and to identify the possible source of the adulterants. Surprisingly, the presence of fatty acids of animal origin turned out to be widespread in commercial samples of saw palmetto oil.

Recycled paper needs a lot of mechanical/chemical treatments for its re-use in the papermaking process. Some of these ones produce considerable rejected waste fractions, such as "screen rejects", which include both cellulose fibers and non-fibrous organic contaminants, or "stickies", these last representing a shortcoming both for the papermaking process and for the quality of the final product. Instead, the accepted fractions coming from these unit operations become progressively poorer in contaminants and richer in cellulose. Here, input and output streams coming from mechanical screening systems of a papermaking plant using recycled paper for cardboard production were sampled and analyzed directly and after solvent extraction, thus confirming the abundant presence of styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) and ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymers in the output rejected stream and cellulose in the output accepted one. Despite some significant drawbacks, the "screen reject" fraction could be traditionally used as fuel for energy recovery within the paper mill, in agreement with the integrated recycled paper mill approach. The waste, which still contains a cellulose fraction, can be also exploited by means of the hydrothermal route to give levulinic acid, a platform chemical of very high value added.

Since safety hazards can occur during the life of a Li-ion battery, understanding its behaviour under abusive conditions is important for the development of a safe cell. In this work, overcharge tests on commercial Li-polymer cells were conducted, resulting in gas evolution. A comprehensive postmortem analysis of the abused cells was planned to be carried out by means of several analytical techniques: gas phase chromatography for the identification of the exhaust gases, scanning electron microscopy and energy X-ray spectrometry for the investigation of the cathode and anode materials, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy for the study of the electrolyte composition, etc.). First interesting results, regarding the characterization of a high temperature overcharged cell and the detection of flammable and toxic species produced by the cell, are presented in this paper.

Iodine biofortification has been gaining interest in recent years as a sustainable and innovative approach to eradicate iodine deficiency disorders. Studying the impact of iodine biofortification on plant phenotype, biochemical and physiological parameters is crucial to leverage the expertise and best practices for the agro-food industry and human health. The aim of this study was to evaluate iodine biofortification on the main quantitative and qualitative traits of basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) plants cultivated both in open field and in growth chamber. The impact of KI and KIO3 treatments was evaluated on biomass production, as well as on the synthesis of phenolic compounds, especially rosmarinic acid and other caffeic acid derivatives, and on the essential oil (EO) composition. These compounds are typically accumulated in basil leaves and strongly contribute to the plant nutraceutical value and aroma. In open field, the use of increasing concentrations of both iodine salts gradually enhanced iodine accumulation in leaves, also determining an increase of the antioxidant power, total phenolics, rosmarinic acid and cinnamic acid accumulation. The composition of EO was only slightly affected by the treatments, as all the samples were characterized by a linalool chemotype and a minor alteration in their relative content was observed. A growth chamber experiment was performed to test EO variation in controlled conditions, broadening the range of iodine concentrations. In this case, plant chemotype was significantly affected by the treatments and large EO variability was observed, suggesting that iodine form and concentration can potentially influence the EO composition but that in open field this effect is overcome by environmental factors.

Introduction In people with haemophilia (PWH) with severe arthropathy, total joint replacement (TJR) can be undertaken if conservative management fails. Post-operative rehabilitation treatment is an important part of the comprehensive management of patients undergoing TJR. Aim To compare post-operative standard rehabilitation (SR) and SR plus water rehabilitation (WR) in PWH undergoing TJR. Methods PWH who were admitted to our centre between June 2003 and December 2016 for rehabilitation after TJR were included in the study. Rehabilitation included SR (ie, manual and mechanical mobilization, scar tissue massage, light muscle strengthening exercises and walking training with and without crutches) with or without WR. WR exercises with floats of different size and volume were performed when possible. Range of motion (ROM), muscle strength, pain level, perceived health status and length of hospital stay were analysed retrospectively. Results A total of 184 patients (233 rehabilitation programmes were enrolled in the study, corresponding to 160 after total knee replacement [TKR], 37 after total ankle replacement [TAR] and 36 after total hip replacement [THR]). Fifty-eight (25%) patients were treated with WR in addition to SR (32 for TKR, 19 for TAR and 7 for THR) with an average of 5.7 hours of WR. Muscle strength, pain and perceived health status improved significantly after rehabilitation. Conclusion This non-randomized study seems to indicate that WR plus SR improves muscle strength, pain and perceived health status more than SR alone in PWH undergoing TJR. It would be necessary, however, to carry out randomized comparative studies to confirm these provisional conclusions.

The characterization of the solid residue coming from the acid hydrolysis of giant reed (Arundo Donax L.) herbaceous biomass was performed and compared with the characteristics of two commercial technical lignins, i.e. a soda and a sulphate (kraft) one, in order to ascertain their differences, and thus better address their successive possible applications. The investigated hydrolysis residue derived from an hydrothermal treatment with dilute hydrochloric acid under harsh conditions, addressed to the production of levulinic acid, and contains both lignin and humin units. These last components are not present in the compared lignins that are industrially obtained by different extraction processes. A. Donax L. hydrolysis residue still contains aromatic hydroxyl groups, and carbonyl moieties deriving from lignin and carbohydrates degradation reactions, whilst the aliphatic hydroxyl and methoxyl groups were almost completely degraded. The elemental composition of this residue is similar to that of brown coal, highlighting that biomass carbonization has occurred. The solubilisation of the A. Donax L. hydrolysis residue was investigated in different solvents: only a little amount (∼10 wt%) was dissolved. The condensed nature of the hydrolysis residue was confirmed by thermogravimetric analysis. This approach allows the contemporary production of levulinic acid and the recovery of the A. Donax L. hydrolysis residue, hitherto considered only the waste fraction of the hydrothermal process, thus making this last a promising starting material for future green applications.

The removal of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) both from siloxane transformer oil and hydrocarbon engine oil was investigated through the application of microwave (MW) irradiation and a reaction system based on polyethyleneglycol (PEG) and potassium hydroxide. The influence of the main reaction parameters (MW irradiation time, molecular weight of PEG, amount of added reactants and temperature) on the dechlorination behavior was studied. Promising performances were reached, allowing about 50% of dechlorination under the best experimental conditions, together time and energy saving compared to conventional heating systems. Moreover, an interesting dechlorination degree (up to 32%) was achieved for siloxane transformer oil when MW irradiation was employed as the unique driving force. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time in which MW irradiation is tested as the single driving force for the dechlorination of these two types of PCB-contaminated oils.

Background: The handgrip strength test is widely used by clinicians; however, little has been investigated about its reliability when used in subjects with Parkinson disease (PD). The purpose of this study was to investigate the test-retest reliability of the handgrip strength test for subjects with PD. Methods: The PD group consisted of 15 patients, and the control group consisted of 15 healthy subjects. Each patient performed 3 pain-free maximal isometric contractions on each hand on 2 occasions, 1 week apart. Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), standard error of measurement (SEM), and 95% limits of agreement (LOA) were calculated. The 2-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted to determine the differences between sides and groups. Results: Test-retest reliability of measurements of grip strength was excellent for dominant (ICC = 0.97; P = .001) and non-dominant (ICC = 0.98; P = .001) hand of participant with PD and (ICC = 0.99; P = .001) and (ICC = 0.99; P = .001) respectively, of healthy group. Conclusions: The Jamar hand dynamometer had fair to excellent test-retest reliability to test grip strength in participants with PD.

Bis(salicylaldiminate)copper(II) complexes, when activated with methylaluminoxane, catalyzed the homo- and copolymerizations of ethylene and methyl methacrylate (MMA). The activity in the MMA homopolymerization was influenced by the electronic and steric characteristics of the Cu(II) precursors as well as the cocatalyst concentration. The same systems revealed modest activity also in the homopolymerization of ethylene, giving a highly linear polyethylene, and in its copolymerization with MMA. These copolymers exhibited a very high content of polar groups (MMA units > 70 mol %) and were characterized by a high molecular weight and polydispersity. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The polymerization of norbornene has been investigated in the presence of different bis(salicylaldiminate)nickel(II) precursors activated by methylaluminoxane. These systems are highly active in affording nonstereoregular vinyl-type polynorbornenes (PNBs) with high molecular weights. The productivity of the catalytic systems is strongly enhanced (up to 35,000 kg of PNB/mol of Ni × h) when electron-withdrawing nitro groups are introduced on the phenol moiety. On the contrary, the presence of bulky alkyl groups on the N-aryl moiety of the ligand does not substantially affect the activity or characteristics of the resulting PNBs. The catalytic performances are also markedly influenced by the reaction parameters, such as the nature of the solvent, the reaction time, and the monomer/Ni and Al/Ni molar ratios. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. New nickel (II) catalytic systems based on N,O chelate ligands, activated by methylaluminoxane, have been checked in the homopolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and its copolymerization with ethylene. In particular, the bis(8-hydroxy-5-nitro-quinolate)nickel(II)/methylaluminoxane system as well as the catalysts obtained by oxidative addition of either 8-hydroxy-5-nitro-quinoline or 8-hydroxy-5,7-dinitro-quinoline or 4-nitro-2-(p-nitrobenzylideneamino)-phenol to Ni(cod)2, subsequently activated by methylaluminoxane, have been employed. The influence of the reaction parameters on the catalytic activity and the characteristics of the resulting polymers has been investigated. All the obtained poly(methyl methacrylate) samples display a largely prevailing syndiotacticity degree, high molecular weights and a rather large polydispersity. The catalytic systems obtained through the oxidative procedure are able also to give copolymers of MMA with ethylene producing highly linear polyethylenes containing a low amount (1.5-2 mol %) of MMA counits, thus affording materials with improved surface properties.

The homopolymerization of methyl methacrylate was investigated with bis(salicylaldiminate)nickel(II) complexes, such as bis[3,5-dinitro-N(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)salicylaldiminate]nickel(II) (IIIa) and bis[3,5-dinitro-N(phenyl)salicylaldiminate]nickel(II) (IIIb), and with methylaluminoxane (MAO) as an activator. In particular, the effect of the Al/Ni molar ratio on the catalytic activity and on the properties of the resulting poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) was checked. The maximum activity was ascertained when an Al/Ni molar ratio equal to about 100 was used. However, the productivity of the catalytic systems was rather low. When the IIIa/MAO catalytic system was prepared under an ethylene atmosphere, an extremely high activity was observed, a productivity value of up to around 150,000 g of PMMA/(mol of Ni × h) being obtained, the highest ever found with nickel-based catalysts. No appreciable presence of ethylene counits in the polymeric products was also ascertained. When the IIIb/MAO system was used, similar results were found, and high molecular weight PMMAs were obtained, despite the absence of bulky isopropyl substituents in positions ortho and ortho′ to the N-aryl moiety of the salicylaldiminate ligand. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Salicylaldimine ligands, such as 5-nitro-N(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)salicylaldimine, 3,5-dinitro-N(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)salicylaldimine, and 3-phenyl-N(2,6-di-isopropylphenyl) salicylaldimine were checked in the oxidative addition to bis(1,5-cyclooctadiene)nickel(0) to prepare, after activation by methylaluminoxane (MAO), novel nickel-based catalytic systems active in the polymerization of methyl methacrylate. The catalytic behavior of the aforementioned systems, in terms of activity, molecular weight, and polydispersity of the resulting poly(methyl methacrylate) as well as its stereoregularity degree, was investigated as a function of the Al/Ni molar ratio, reaction temperature, and nature of the salicylaldimine ligand. The effect of ethylene atmosphere present during the preparation of the catalyst precursors was also investigated. The results are discussed and compared with those previously obtained by bis(salicylaldiminate)nickel(II)/MAO catalytic systems.

Ginseng is any one of the eleven species belonging to the genus Panax of the family Araliaceae and is found in North America and in eastern Asia. Ginseng is characterized by the presence of ginsenosides. Principally Panax ginseng and Panax quinquefolius are the adaptogenic herbs and are commonly distributed as health food markets. In the present study high performance liquid chromatography has been used to identify and quantify ginsenosides in the two subject species and the different parts of the plant (roots, neck, leaves, flowers, fruits). The power of this chromatographic technique to evaluate the identity of botanical material and to distinguishing different part of the plants has been investigated with metabolomic technique such as principal component analysis. Metabolomics provide a good opportunity for mining useful chemical information from the chromatographic data set resulting an important tool for quality evaluation of medicinal plants in the authenticity, consistency and efficacy.

Preparations containing Saw palmetto extracts are used in traditional medicine to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia. According to the European and the American Pharmacopoeias, the extract is obtained from comminuted Saw palmetto berries by a suitable extracting procedure using ethanol or supercritical carbon dioxide or a mixture of n-hexane and methylpentanes. In the present study an approach to metabolomics profiling using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) has been used as a finger-printing tool to assess the overall composition of the extracts. The phytochemical analysis coupled with principal component analysis (PCA) showed the same composition of the Saw palmetto extracts obtained with carbon dioxide and hexane with minor not significant differences for extracts obtained with ethanol. In fact these differences are anyhow lower than the batch-to-batch variability ascribable to the natural-occurring variability in the Saw palmetto fruits' phytochemical composition. The fingerprinting analysis combined with chemometric method, is a technique, which would provide a tool to comprehensively assess the quality control of Saw palmetto extracts.

Novel catalytic systems based on bis-(chelate)nicke(II) precursors, such as bis (α-nitroacetophenonate)nickel(II) [Ni(naph) 2 ] and bis(2,6-diisopropyl―benzenesalicyladiminate)nickel(II) [Ni(dipbs) 2 ], and methylaluminoxane (MAO)= as the cocatalyst were employed for the polymerization of methyl methacrylate (NMA). Reaction paramethers were examined. Under proper conditions, the Ni(dipbs) 2 /MAo system allowed to obtain poly(MMA) with a very high productivity (TOF up to 70 000 h-1) and a remarkable syndiospecificity degree (rr > 80%) at room temperature without addition of an ancillary Lewis base.

Purpose: The aim of this study is to demonstrate the feasibility and usefulness of mechanical suturing in children for low rectal anastomosis. Methods: The study group includes 31 children operated on from January 1993 to July 1996 by the same senior surgeon, performing the modified Duhamel procedure for Hirschsprung's disease in 17 children, intestinal neuronal dysplasia in seven, and the Knight-Griffen procedure in seven pediatric patients with chronic ulcerative colitis. Results: In all the cases the technique of "viscero-synthesis" was performed using the mechanical stapler. A circular stapler has been used for the end-to-end and the end-to-side anastomosis between the anal canal or the back wall of the rectum with the pulled viscus, while a linear endoscopic stapler (GIA) has been used for the consolidation of the rectocolic wall in the modified Duhamel technique. Conclusions: The results obtained demonstrate that the mechanical staplers in children are safe and effective in low rectal anastomosis, sparing operative time and reducing the risk of anastomotic dehiscence; however, the size of circular instruments limits its use in neonates and small infants.

The analysis of gas evolving during the pyrolysis of two very different rank coals was studied by using FT-IR spectroscopy. These coals, coming from Sulcis (Sardinia, Italy) and from South Africa, respectively, were subjected to progressive heating up to 800°C in vacuum. The thermal destruction of coal was followed by monitoring the production of gases in this range of temperature. The gases evolving in the heating from room temperature to 800°C were collected at intervals of 100°C and analysed by infrared spectroscopy. The relative pressures were plotted against temperature. These graphs clearly show the correlation among qualitative gas composition, temperature, and the maximum value of emissions, thus confirming FT-IR analysis as a powerful key for pyrolysis monitoring.
