Among various forms of anthropogenic pollution, the release of toxic metals in the environment is a global concern due to the high toxicity of these metals towards living organisms. In the last 20 years, sediment washing has gained increasing attention thanks to its capability to remove toxic metals from contaminated matrices. In this paper, we propose a Response Surface Methodology method for the washing of selected marine sediments of the Bagnoli-Coroglio Bay (Campania region, Italy) polluted with arsenic and other contaminants. We focused our attention on different factors affecting the clean-up performance (i.e., liquid/solid ratio, chelating concentration, and reaction time). The highest As removal efficiency (i.e., >30 μg/g) was obtained at a liquid/solid ratio of 10:1 (v/w), a citric acid concentration of 1000 mM, and a washing time of 94.22 h. Based on these optimum results, ecotoxicological tests were performed and evaluated in two marine model species (i.e., Phaeodactylum tricornutum and Aliivibrio fischeri), which were exposed to the washing solutions. Reduced inhibition of the model species was observed after nutrient addition. Overall, this study provides an effective tool to quickly assess the optimum operating conditions to be set during the washing procedures of a broad range of marine sediments with similar physicochemical properties (i.e., grain size and type of pollution).

This study proposes the phytoremediation of phenanthrene (PHE)-, pyrene (PYR)-, and copper (Cu)-contaminated soil by Cannabis sativa L. The experimental campaign was conducted in 300 mL volume pots over a 50 d period using different initial polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) concentrations, i.e., 100 (PC1), 200 (PC2), and 300 (PC3) mg ƩPAHs kg−1 dry weight of soil, while maintaining a constant Cu concentration of 350 mg∙kg−1. PHE and PYR removal was 93 and 61%, 98 and 48%, and 97 and 36% in PC1, PC2, and PC3, respectively, in the greenhouse condition. The highest Cu extraction amounted to 58 mg∙kg−1. In general, the growth of C. sativa L. under the PC1, PC2, and PC3 conditions decreased by approximately 25, 65, and 71% (dry biomass), respectively, compared to the uncontaminated control. The present study is aimed at highlighting the phytoremediation potential of C. sativa L. and providing the preliminary results necessary for future field-scale investigations.

Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) has shown success in past years for the treatment of municipal and industrial wastewater containing inorganic nutrients (i.e., nitrogen). However, the increase in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)-contaminated matrices calls for new strategies for efficient and environmentally sustainable remediation. Therefore, the present review examined the literature on the connection between the anammox process and PAHs using VOSviewer to shed light on the mechanisms involved during PAH biodegradation and the key factors affecting anammox bacteria. The scientific literature thoroughly discussed here shows that PAHs can be involved in nitrogen removal by acting as electron donors, and their presence does not adversely affect the anammox bacteria. Anammox activity can be improved by regulating the operating parameters (e.g., organic load, dissolved oxygen, carbon-to-nitrogen ratio) and external supplementation (i.e., calcium nitrate) that promote changes in the microbial community (e.g., Candidatus Jettenia), favoring PAH degradation. The onset of a synergistic dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium and partial denitrification can be beneficial for PAH and nitrogen removal.

This work investigates a statistical approach analysing data from monitoring activities on marine-coastal areas for environmental quality determination and surveillance. Analyses were performed on a database of the Environmental Protection and Prevention Agency of the Puglia Region. As, Cr, Ni, and Pb concentration values in marine sediments and biota from 2013 to 2015 and 2017 were processed to investigate different contaminant characteristics. Hierarchical cluster analysis identified three contaminant distribution classes with (1) highest Cr, Ni, and Pb concentrations, (2) highest As concentration, and (3) lowest contaminants concentration. The Kruskal-Wallis and Friedman tests showed that contaminant distributions were statistically different when considering the monitoring years and classes. However, statistical similarities resulted during the 2013–2017 and 2014–2015 periods. Spearman’s coefficients displayed positive correlations among the pollutants in each matrix and mainly negative correlations for matrices comparison. This methodology aims to provide a practical support for monitoring to identify potential environmental deterioration over time and correlations with specific contamination sources.

The issue of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is widespread in marine sediments involving ecological systems and human health. Sediment washing (SW) has proven to be the most effective remediation approach for sediments polluted by PAHs, such as phenanthrene (PHE). However, SW still raises waste handling concerns due to a considerable amount of effluents generated downstream. In this context, the biological treatment of a PHE- and ethanol-containing spent SW solution can represent a highly efficient and environmentally-friendly strategy, but its knowledge is still scarce in scientific literature and no studies have so far been conducted in continuous mode. Therefore, a synthetic PHE-polluted SW solution was biologically treated in a 1 L aerated continuous-flow stirred-tank reactor for 129 days by evaluating the effect of different pH values, aeration flowrates and hydraulic retention times as operating parameters over five successive phases. A PHE removal efficiency of up to 75-94% was achieved by an acclimated PHE-degrading consortium mainly composed of Proteobacteria, Bacteroidota and Firmicutes phyla through biodegradation following the adsorption mechanism. PHE biodegradation, mainly occurring via the benzoate route due to the presence of PAH-related-degrading functional genes and a phthalate accumulation up to 46 mg/L, was also accompanied by a reduction of dissolved organic carbon and ammonia nitrogen above 99% in the treated SW solution.

In the present work, an anaerobic bioremediation treatment was investigated for reclamation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contaminated soil. The PAHs contaminated soil was artificially prepared and seven different contamination conditions were tested. In particular, four soils were contaminated solely by naphthalene (A), anthracene (B), pyrene (C) and benzo[a]pyrene (D), respectively, whereas, three soils were contaminated by benzo[a]pyrene coupled with one of the other investigated PAHs (i.e. A+D, B+D, and C+D tests). Such conditions were tested in order to study the possible degradation kinetic for the single involved PAH (with aromatic rings ranging from 2 to 5) as well as for PAHs mixed with a 5-aromatic rings contaminant (i.e. benzo[a]pyrene). The investigated treatment was carried out in bioaugmented condition through two microbial inocula obtained from anaerobic digestion tests on lignocellulosic substrate. In more detail, the two inocula were differently enriched through experiments characterized by sequential re-inoculation on new substrate, for its subsequent treatment, every 24 h and 96 h, respectively. The present study focused on the PAHs degradation efficiency and pathways, and microbiological abundance characterization, thus providing a comprehensive and interdisciplinary view to assess the feasibility of the suggested treatment in the field of PAHs contaminated soil remediation.

In the Call for Papers corresponding to this Virtual Special Issue (VSI), the Editors indicated that, as is well known, emerging pollutants include a variety of substances that pose remarkable risks for the environment and public health. In fact, emerging pollutants are considered a matter of concern deserving increasing efforts to elucidate their occurrence, fate, repercussions, and alternatives to their removal from the various environmental compartments where they can be found after spreading as contaminants. Also, the Editors commented that, among the various alternatives that can be considered for achieving their successful removal, some of them are based on the use of sorbent materials, and, specifically, bioadsorbents, which are attractive due to the efficacy and low cost associated with some of them. Another alternative is related to the utilization of nanoparticle-based systems, which may be considered a promising field of research in this way. In both cases, obtaining new research results, as well as designing and programming new ways of going steps ahead in the investigation of both kinds of materials, would be key objectives. According to the previous considerations, the Editors of the VSI invited researchers having new data concerning these aspects to submit manuscripts with experimental results, discussion, reflections and prospective related to their work. With the Special Issue closed, the number of submissions received was 83, with 40 high-quality works being accepted for publication, increasing the overall knowledge on this topic by providing results that we are sure will be of value for the scientific community and the society.

Silver is extensively used in electronics, industrial catalysis, and biomedical sector owing to its enhanced physicochemical properties. E-waste recycling may contribute significantly to enhance silver recovery in the view of a circular economy and limit the depletion of mineral sources. In this scenario, hydrometallurgical routes represent the most widely used techniques for silver extraction/recovery and require strong acidic solutions, high temperatures, and multiple operating units. An alternative sustainable route for silver recovery from leaching solutions used for silver extraction in industrial applications is herein proposed for the first time. The novel green process of silver recovery is based on the UV/vis light-driven photocatalytic deposition of pure metallic silver over low-cost and non-toxic ZnO photocatalyst. In the second step, ZnO is dissolved by slight acidification and pure metallic silver is easily recovered. Low environmental impact, mild operating conditions, and economic viability are among the major perks of the new silver recovery process developed. In the view of a full-scale implementation, several operating conditions of the recovery process (i.e., photocatalyst load, starting silver concentration, type of hole scavenger and irradiation) were thoroughly investigated. A mathematical model capable of describing the system behaviour under different operating conditions was also developed and allowed to estimate unknown kinetic parameters for the Ag-photodeposition process.

This study proposes the phytoremediation of a pyrene (PYR)-contaminated soil by Cannabis sativa L. The experimental campaign was conducted along a 60 days period using three different initial PYR concentrations (i.e., 50, 100 and 150 mg·kg TS−1 of soil) in 300 mL volume pots under greenhouse conditions (18–25 °C and 45–55% humidity). After 60 days of hemp growth and flourishing, the highest PYR removal reached approximately 95% in planted soil, 35% higher than in the unplanted control. PYR accumulation was observed in both roots and aerial parts of the plant, with a higher PYR uptake at increasing initial PYR concentrations in soil. The initial PYR concentration affected the growth and, thus, the phytoremediation potential of C. sativa L., which was the result of different removal mechanisms. Overall, the lowest initial PYR concentration was the one that resulted in the highest PYR removal. The interaction between the plant roots and microorganisms in rhizosphere was likely associated with PYR removal in this study. The highest DHO activity of 66.26 μg INTF g−1 TS−1 was observed in the soil spiked with 50 mg PYR·kg TS−1.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are widespread in marine environments, having negative implications on both ecological systems and human health. At the same time, research on highly–efficient and environmentally–friendly alternatives compared to conventional remediation techniques must be stepped up. In this work, for the first time, a novel modification procedure of willow–derived biochar based on volatile fatty acids (VFA) has been employed to enhance biochar structures aimed at avoiding phenanthrene (PHE) desorption. Batch adsorption–desorption experiments showed a PHE removal of 93% and a hysteresis index of 4.9 after 72 h with biochar pyrolyzed at 400 °C (BC400) and modified with VFAs (MBC400), respectively. A lower efficiency was obtained with higher temperature–produced biochars (i.e. 700 °C) due to lower surface area and functional group abundance compared to the biochars obtained at 400 °C. Physisorption and chemisorption mechanisms were mainly involved in a multilayer PHE adsorption onto the heterogeneous BC400 and MBC400 surfaces, as shown by pseudo–first– and –second–order kinetic (R2 = 0.988) and Freundlich isotherm (R2 = 0.951–0.995) models. A more complicated and advanced subsequent application of biochar in PHE–polluted marine sediments with a dosage of 0.1–5% (w/w) led to the reduction of pore water PHE up to 24% after 28 days. An ecotoxicological test showed a mitigated toxicity of the sediment remediated with BC400 and MBC400 towards Folsomia candida springtails due to a decrease in adult mortality and reproduction inhibition, which was directly correlated with the reduction of PHE bioavailability (rPHE–FC = 0.76).

The continuous growth of waste is generating worldwide more and more increasing related environmental concerns. Anything that is not recycled or recuperated from waste represents a loss of raw materials and other production factors used in the manufacture, transport and consumer phases of the product. This research explored the potential of three waste namely Construction and Demolition (CD) waste, Fly Ash (FA), and Jet Grouting (JG) waste as fillers in comparison to the traditional limestone one for making hot asphalt mastics for road pavement, through a rheological analysis and environmental compatibility tests towards the release of potentially toxic elements. A total of eight asphalt mastics were prepared by using two filler-to-binder weight ratios (f/b) of 0.5 and 1 for blending each filler with a neat bitumen 50/70 penetration grade. The Frequency Sweep test and the Multiple Stress Creep and Recovery (MSCR) test were carried out to investigate the rheological properties of the asphalt mastics. Asphalt mastics containing FA and JG fillers were found to be more mechanically and environmentally efficient than traditional limestone mastic in particular by adopting an f/b equal to 1 where it was observed higher complex shear modulus values, G*, (on average 50% compared to the traditional asphalt mastic) and lower non-recoverable creep compliance values, Jnr, (on average 35% compared to the traditional asphalt mastic) at all test temperatures investigated. Based on the suggested ranking methodology, CD emerged as the filler performing in the same way of the traditional one. All the waste containing mastics, showed up noticeable environmental compatibility, being the potentially toxic elements completely immobilized into the mastics’ structure e practically not releasable into acidic water, highlighting the waste recycling for road pavements as primary strategy to immobilize hazardous wastes.

Forecasting nitrate concentration in rivers is essential for environmental protection and careful treatment of drinking water. This study shows that nonlinear autoregressive with exogenous inputs neural networks can provide accurate models to predict nitrate plus nitrite concentrations in waterways. The Susquehanna River and the Raccoon River, USA, were chosen as case studies. Water discharge, water temperature, dissolved oxygen, and specific conductance were considered exogenous inputs. The forecasting sensitivity to changes in the exogenous input parameters and time series length was also assessed. In the current study the possibility of saffron (Crocus sativus L.) cultivating using semi-saline water was investigated at different planting dates. The salinity of irrigation water and soil were 2.9 and 5.8 dS m−1, respectively. The results showed that saffron had an acceptable potential for cultivation using semi-saline water in saline soils. The early planting dates went through the developmental stages faster, meaning saffron corms sown in early October sprouted earlier, flowers appeared faster and fully flowering occurred earlier. Nevertheless, plant senescence was the same in all planting dates. The highest percentage of corms sprouting and flowering were obtained in the early October planting dates in both years, which were matched with canopy temperature distribution. The highest flowers weight as well as stigma fresh and dry weight were obtained on the 13 October planting date within the 3 years study reaching the maximum values during the third year. Electrolyte leakage was higher in the last planting date, while photosynthesis pigments were more in early to mid-October planting dates. These effects might be related to damage of freezing temperature to physiological processes. Shoot dry weight and water productivity were the highest in early October planting dates. The shoot biomass on October 13 planting date was enough to be considered as a new forage source in semi-saline conditions. It seems that cultivation of saffron with semi-saline water is possible by considering a proper planting date, adequate leaching requirement and accurate irrigation management.

In this editorial piece, the Editors of the Virtual Special Issue (VSI) “New Trends on Green Energy and Environmental Technologies, with Special Focus on Biomass Valorization, Water and Waste Recycling”, present summarized data corresponding to the accepted submissions, as well as additional comments regarding the thematic of the VSI. Overall, 83 manuscripts were received, with final publication of those having the highest quality, accepted after peer-reviewing. The Editors think that the result is a set of very interesting papers that increase the knowledge on the matter, and which would be useful for researchers and the whole society SI

Operations in copper sulfide flotation plants (CSFP) are complex and governed by several variables such as available technologies, reagents, and environmental conditions. However, few investigations are related to studying the microbial communities. These aspects provide a reason to compare the bacterial communities of two CSFP operated with freshwater (FwFlo) and seawater (SwFlo), and study whether indigenous bacteria could be used as pyrite bioreagents. Analyses were determined through next-generation sequencing by Illumina MiSeq System and conducted throughout the entire process: (i) minerals before and after grinding; (ii) final concentrate and concentrate thickener overflow; (iii) final tailings and tailings thickener overflow; and (iv) intake water. Bacterial strains from both plants were tested as potential bioreagents, given their tendency to adhere to pyrite after 5 min. In both CSFP, Proteobacteria (relative abundance from 45.48% to 79.22%), followed by Bacteroidetes (9.37%–44.7%), were the most abundant phyla. Regarding species, Algoriphagus olei (11.35%–43.52%) was present exclusively in FwFlo samples in contact with process water and absent in the mineral before grinding, where Cupriavidus metallidurans (16.05%) and Pseudomonas_uc (11.79%) predominated. In SwFlo samples, Marinobacter flavimaris (3.47%–41.1%), and GU061212-s (10.92%–27.63%), were the most abundant microorganisms. All of them were also detected in intake seawater. The strains with the highest adhesion rate (from 29.84% ± 0.14–100%) were phylogenetically identified as species of the genera Marinobacter, Pseudomonas, Idiomarina, Halomonas, Bacillus, Aerocuccus, and Peribacillus. Our results reveal that bacterial communities are critically dependent on process waters during mining activities, and our data depicted that indigenous bacteria could be used as potential pyrite bioreagents, evidenced by a high adhesion rate. It is thus possible to propose that different indigenous bacterial strains could be considered as new bioreagents to reduce the impact of conventional flotation reagents on health from an environment friendly perspective.

The role of nitrogen (N) in inducing salt stress tolerance in plants is not well understood, and the question is more complicated in saffron (Crocussativus L.), which is sensitive to both nitrogen rates and salinity. The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of different N (0, 50 and 150 kg ha−1) supplies on saffron growth and ions concentration in shoots under several salt stress levels (0, 3, 6 and 9 dS m−1). Salinity negatively affected plant growth assessed by leaves number, leaves length, shoot dry weight, corms number and corms weight. Moreover, there was a clear direct correlation between higher salinity value and less plant growth. Different effects due to salinity and nitrogen were evident in terms of the number and length of leaves during the growing season from day 60 after first irrigation (DAF) and achieved a peak after 90 DAF. Salt stress also affected the ions balance, as Na+, Cl− and Ca2+ were enhanced and K+ was reduced, thereby damaging the plants. Nitrogen partially mitigated the negative impacts of salinity on plant growth and ions balance, although this compensatory effect was observed when nitrogen supply was set at 50 kg N ha−1. For example, in 2019–2020, the losses in shoot dry weight due to 9 dS m−1 salinity amounted to 47%, 44% and 54%, at 0, 50 and 100 kg N ha−1 respectively, thus indicating a less negative effect of salinity at 50 kg N ha−1. Moreover, at 100 kg N ha−1 the negative effect of salinity was stronger for six and nine dS m−1. Our findings suggested that the optimum N supply (50 kg N ha−1) strengthened the plant under non-saline and moderately saline (6 dS m−1) conditions, and consequently improved salt tolerance.

This work studies the interaction of organic nanoparticles (ON) with various dyes in aqueous solution, to elucidate the role of ON on transport and fate of dyes in the environment, and on dyes removal from wastewater. Studied dyes are Acid Red 66 (AR66), Methylene Blue (MB), Reactive Black 5 (RB5), and Reactive Violet 5 (RV5). ON are extracted from organic matter of anthropogenic origin through resuspension of its colloidal fraction, and successive filtration and dialysis of the obtained suspension. Mechanisms of interaction are investigated initially through three-dimensional excitation emission matrix (3DEEM) analysis. Obtained data indicate that dynamic interactions occur strongly between dye molecules and ON aggregates. 3DEEM spectra of mixed samples containing ON together with one of the tested dyes, present a shape similar to the one of ON alone, but each of them is characterized by specific differences in terms of peaks quenching and shift. The analysis of these singularities suggests that dye molecules are bound to the functional groups of ON through H-bonds, according to the following steps: i) dyes reach the surface of ON aggregates; ii) the molecules pass through the hydrophilic surface of ON aggregates, and reach their hydrophobic core; iii) the dyes are sequestrated into the hydrophobic core of ON aggregates. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopies analysis confirm the formation of supramolecular aggregates with stable micellar hydrophobic structure, mainly consisting of aliphatic fractions of ON, which explain the disappearance of aromatic groups signals from dyes.

We assessed whether soil with high Cr contamination could be reclaimed by alkali, mineral, and organic acid-based ligands (OABLs) washing. We tested HNO3, H2SO4, HCl, NaOH, H2O2, lactic acid (LA), malic acid (MA), oxalic acid (OA), and citric acid (CA), together with EDTA, obtaining the highest efficiencies in presence of 1 M sulfuric acid (98%). Nonetheless we noted that using OABLs, we obtained a Cr(III) removal efficiency similar to the one obtained using mineral acids. Indeed 1 M of LA and MA and 0.8 M of OA allowed obtaining, respectively, 88%, 75%, and 67% removal percentage. The extraction process with OABLs was strongly dependent on intraparticle diffusion of Cr-LA, Cr-MA, and Cr-OA complexes. We also determined the apparent diffusion coefficients. Residual toxicity of treated soils was tested with the nematode, Caenorhabditis elegans. The OABL washing generally allowed getting a soil without Cr and with reduced toxicity. However, the washing process also removed other cations that acted as nutrients. Consequently, we conducted toxicity tests on enriched soil and found that the mortality index improved. In some cases (LA and MA), mortality was comparable to that observed with uncontaminated control samples. In contrast, when contaminated soils were washed with sulfuric acid, in all conditions, we observed significant ecotoxicity. Therefore, we concluded that only the OABL treatment provided a non-toxic soil that could be reused for anthropic activities.

Soil contamination by pyrene has increased over the years due to human-related activities, urgently demanding for remediation approaches to ensure human and environment safety. Within this frame, phytoremediation has been successfully applied over the years due to its green and cost-effectiveness features. The scope of this review includes the main phytoremediation mechanisms correlated with the removal of pyrene from contaminated soils and sediments to highlight the impact of different parameters and the supplement of additives on the efficiency of the treatment. Soil organic matter (SOM), plant species, aging time, environmental parameters (pH, soil oxygenation, and temperature) and bioavailability are among the main parameters affecting pyrene removal through phytoremediation. Phytoextraction only accounts for a small part of the entire phytoremediation process, but the addition of surfactants and chelating agents in planted soils could increase pyrene accumulation in plant tissues by 20% as a consequence of the increased pyrene bioavailability. Rhizodegradation is the main phytoremediation mechanism involved due to the activity of bacteria capable of degrading pyrene in the root area. Inoculated-planted soil treatments have the potential to decrease pyrene accumulation in shoots and roots by approximately 30 and 40%, respectively, further stimulating the proliferation of pyrene-degrading bacteria in the rhizosphere. Plant-fungi symbiotic association results in an enhanced accumulation of pyrene in shoots and roots of plants as well as a higher biodegradation. Finally, pyrene removal from soil can be improved in the presence of amendments, such as natural non-ionic surfactants, biochar, and bacterial mixtures.

The present study reports data on a 20 months campaign monitoring enteric viruses (hepatitis A, norovirus, rotavirus, astrovirus, sapovirus, and aichivirus) and bacteria (Salmonella spp.) in seawater. The aim of this work was to assess the potential correlation among the presence of viruses/bacteria and different environmental factors like seasonality, water discharge sources (treated and untreated wastewater, mixed waters and raw water) as well as influence of the Italian lockdown measure against COVID-19 pandemic. Results showed different prevalence of the investigated viruses with values equal to 16 % for norovirus GI, 15.1 % for norovirus GII, followed by 13.8 % for astrovirus, and 13.3 % for sapovirus. Rotavirus was detected in the 8.4 % of samples and aichivirus was detected with the lowest prevalence of 3.5 %. Hepatitis A virus was never identified in the monitoring campaign. Salmonella spp. was detected with a prevalence of 36.6 %. Statistical analysis displayed a high correlation for the two noroviruses simultaneous detection (NGI and NGII) while a lower correlation was found for co-presence of noroviruses with astrovirus, sapovirus or Salmonella spp. A significant decrease of enteric pathogens in seawater was observed during the restrictions period. Results on seasonality highlighted a higher viral prevalence correlated to the wet season for all the pathogens but rotavirus and aichivirus, which instead showed an opposite trend and a higher incidence in the dry season. With respect to discharge typology, some viruses displayed a higher prevalence in treated waters (astrovirus, rotavirus, sapovirus and aichivirus) while the other investigated pathogens (noroviruses and Salmonella spp.) showed a higher prevalence in mixed waters. The main observations of this work were used to define a potential monitoring strategy that could be useful for sanitary Authorities to implement surveillance plans aimed at preventing possible sanitary outbreaks and/or environmental quality deterioration.

This chapter provides updated information and current state of the knowledge on bioreactors used for wastewater to energy conversion. Continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR), anaerobic filter (AnF), up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB), and anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) treating industrial wastewaters were reviewed. Among the focused reactors, the AnMBR offered many advantages (e.g., low HRT, high OLR), achieving high performances in terms of COD removal and biomethane yield (i.e., 99% and 0.55 m3 CH4 kg−1 CODremoved, respectively). However, an energy evaluation has suggested a higher energy recovery of UASB technology (i.e., 3.29 kWh kg−1 CODremoved) than those showed by CSTR, AnF, and AnMBR (i.e., 0.35, 2.21, and 2.40 kWh kg–1 CODremoved, respectively). The scale-up assessment has also revealed similar results between pilot and full-scale experience in Europe.

The contamination of sediments by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) has been widely spread for years due to human activities, imposing the research and development of effective remediation technologies for achieving efficient treatment and reuse of sediments. In this context, the amendment of biochar in PAH–contaminated sediments has been lately proposed as an innovative and sustainable technology. This review provides detailed information about the mechanisms and impacts associated with the supplementation of biochar to sediments polluted by PAHs. The properties of biochar employed in these applications have been thoroughly examined. Sorption onto biochar is the main mechanism involved in PAH removal from sediments. Sorption efficiency can be significantly improved even in the presence of a low remediation time (i.e. 30 d) when a multi–PAH system is used and biochar is provided with a high dosage (i.e. by 5% in a mass ratio with the sediment) and a specific surface area of approximately 360 m2 g−1. The use of biochar results in a decrease (i.e. up to 20%) of the PAH degradation during bioaugmentation and phytoremediation of sediments, as a consequence of the reduction of PAH bioavailability and an increase of water and nutrient retention. In contrast, PAH degradation has been reported to increase up to 54% when nitrate is used as electron acceptor in low–temperature biochar–amended sediments. Finally, biochar is effective in co–application with Fe2+ for the persulfate degradation of PAHs (i.e. up to 80%), mainly when a high catalyst dose and an acidic pH are used.

This work provides a comprehensive review of research on the cold-bonding pelletization process used to produce lightweight aggregates (LWAs) using waste materials, to valorize the waste and, at the same time, minimize risks related to disposal. Research investigating various aspects of the cold-bonding process highlight: i) feasible mix-designs for pellet production; ii) the most relevant operating parameters affecting the process; and iii) the potential applications of the LWAs produced. The analysis gives a wide overview of the fundamental key-points that control the cold-bonding process. Data comparison provides a useful way to identify the optimal process conditions to allow development of optimum products. This involves the selection of the correct mix-design, including suitable binders and potential additives, and the selection of appropriate operating conditions, which are a function of the waste investigated, and/or waste mix characteristics. The review proposes an optimized approach to experimental studies on cold-bonding processes that has potential to enhance future process performance. Moreover, the present work provides a complete framework useful for decision-making for both manufacturers and researchers working to use this promising technique.

Water splitting for renewable energy technologies necessitates the creation of low-cost, highly active, and stable electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which remains a challenging issue. Oxide-based catalysts, especially perovskites (ABO3), ruddlesden–popper perovskite (A2BO4) and pyrochlore-type oxides (A2B2O7), have attracted gotten much interest as electrocatalysts for water splitting because of their distinctive physical, chemical, and electronic properties. In this work, a scientometric analysis is conducted on developing various oxide-based catalysts for water splitting to explore further developments. Up to now, a total of 29,761 publications (between the years 1990–2020) have been obtained from the Web of Science (WoS) website by searching for these written documents on this subject with a variety of linking keywords. The derived documents were subjected to a scientometric study, which included a look at the contributing authors, publications, contributing countries, top citation bursts, and topic categories. Based on the information obtained, in this research area, the publications started to increase dramatically since 2012. In terms of scientific output on oxide-based catalysts for water splitting, China and the United States were discovered to be the world leaders.

The photo-catalytic degradation of a textile azo-dye as Methyl Orange was studied in an innovative unit constituted by a channel over which a layer of titanium dioxide (TiO2) catalyst in anatase form was deposited and activated by UVB irradiation. The degradation kinetics were followed after variation of the chemical, physical, and hydraulic/hydrodynamic parameters of the system. For this purpose, the influence of the TiO2 dosage (g/cm3), dye concentration (mg/L), pH of the solution, flow-rate (L/s), hydraulic load (cm), and irradiation power (W) were evaluated on the degradation rates. It was observed that the maximum dosage of TiO2 was 0.79 g/cm3 while for higher dosage a reduction of homogeneity of the cement conglomerate occurred. The Langmuir&ndash, Hinshelwood (LH) kinetic model was followed up to a dye concentration around 1 mg/L. It was observed that with the increase of the flow rate, an increase of the degradation kinetics was obtained, while the further increase of the flow-rate associated with the modification of the hydraulic load determined a decrease of the kinetic rates. The results also evidenced an increase of the kinetic rates with the increase of the UVB intensity. A final comparison with other dyes such as Methyl Red and Methylene Blue was carried out in consideration of the pH of the solution, which sensibly affected the removal efficiencies.

Significant release of rare earth elements (REEs) into the environment is mainly due to active or abandoned mining sites, but their presence is globally increasing due to their use in several industrial sectors. The effects on primary producers as Raphidocelis subcapitata are still limited. This research focused on La and Ce as the two most widespread REEs that can be currently found up to hundreds of μg/L in water and wastewater. Microalgae were exposed to La and Ce for 3 days (pH = 7.8) (short-term exposure) to derive the effective concentrations inhibiting the growth on 10% (EC10) of the exposed population. EC10 values (0.5 mg/L of La and 0.4 mg/L of Ce) were used for the 28 days long-term exposure (renewal test) to observe after 7, 14, 21, and 28 days on a multi-endpoint basis microalgae growth inhibition (GI), biomarkers of stress (reactive oxygen species (ROS), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT)), and bioconcentration. Results evidenced that La and Ce EC10 increased GI (day 28) up to 38% and 28%, respectively. ROS, CAT, and SOD activities showed differential responses from day 7 to day 14, 21, and 28, suggesting, in most of the cases, that La and Ce effects were counteracted (i.e., being the values at day 28 not significantly different, p > 0.05, from the relative negative controls), except for La-related ROS activities. La and Ce significantly bioconcentrated in microalgae populations up to 2- and 5-fold (i.e., at day 28 compared to day 7), in that order. Bioconcentrated La and Ce were up to 3157 and 1232 μg/g dry weight (day 28), respectively. These results suggested that low La and Ce concentrations can be slightly toxic to R. subcapitata having the potential to be bioaccumulated and potentially transferred along the food web.

COVID-19 (coronavirus disease) is a global pandemic that started in China in 2019 and has negatively affected all economic sectors of the world, including agriculture. However, according to estimates in different countries, agriculture has suffered less than other sectors such as construction, industry and tourism, so agricultural development can be a good option to compensate for the economic damage caused to other sectors. The quality of available water and soil resources for agricultural development is not only limited, but is also decreasing incrementally, so the use of saline and unconventional soil and water resources is inevitable. Biosaline agriculture or haloculture is a system in which highly saline water and soil resources are used sustainably for the economic production of agricultural crops. It seems that in the current situation of the world (with COVID-19's impact on agriculture on the one hand and the quantitative and qualitative decline of freshwater and soil on the other), haloculture with a re-reading of territorial capabilities has good potential to provide a part of human food supply. In this review article, the potential of haloculture to offset the adverse impacts of the pandemic is analyzed from five perspectives: increasing the area under cultivation, using unconventional water, stabilizing dust centers, increasing the body's immune resistance, and reducing losses in agribusiness due to the coronavirus. The continuous dredging of sediments contaminated by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons such as phenanthrene (PHE) has required the employment of high–efficiency technologies, including sediment washing (SW). However, the large amount of generated spent SW effluents requires the development of effective, eco–friendly and cost–saving approaches, which can tackle the waste formation in favor of the recovery of chemicals. This study proposes the treatment of a spent SW solution containing ethanol (EtOH) as extracting agent, by testing different initial PHE concentrations (i.e. 20–140 mg L−1) within six consecutive cycles in a fed–batch bioreactor under aerobic conditions. The biological process achieved a PHE removal of 63–91% after the enrichment of PHE–degrading bacteria and the proper supplementation of nutrients, and was mainly affected by the initial PHE concentration value and the excessive decrease of pH and dissolved oxygen. Achromobacter, Sphingobacterium and Dysgonomonas genera were mainly involved in PHE degradation, which followed a first–order kinetic model (R2 = 0.652–0.928) with a degradation rate and half–life time of 0.127–1.177 d−1 and 0.589–2.912 d, respectively. A techno–economic assessment revealed that a virtuous operation of SW, EtOH recovery and biodegradation of the SW solution can allow the recovery of up to 1.35 tons of EtOH per ton of remediated sediment and the decrease of the overall costs by 50%.

The purpose of the present work is to provide a complete overview of possible direct/indirect implications on the quality of aquatic compartments due to the recent SARS-CoV-2 outbreak. With this aim, the environmental impacts are mainly related to i) the virus persistence in sewage and wastewaters, and ii) possible fate in aquatic compartments of drugs tested and administered to SARS-CoV-2 infected patients. Because SARS-CoV-2 spread is very recent, and there is a lack of specific studies on this strain, the virus persistence in wastewaters, the parameters influencing the persistence, as well as the detection methodologies are referenced to the general coronaviruses group. However, the present detailed report of up-to-date knowledge on this topic can provide a useful source for further studies focusing on more deepened investigations of SARS-CoV-2 behaviour in the environment. Digestate, as an urban solid waste, was considered as an innovative adsorbent for colorant polluted wastewater. Batch adsorption experiments were carried out using digestate as an adsorbent material to remove various dyes belonging to different categories. The removal rate and adsorption capacity of dyes were evaluated and the dose of digestate, contact time, and initial dye concentration were studied. The maximum removal rate was approximately 96% for Methylene Blue. The equilibrium time for the Methylene Blue was 4 h, while for other dyes, a longer contact time was required to reach the equilibrium. The suspicion of colloidal matter release into the solution from solid fraction of the digestate led to the investigation of the consequence of a washing step of the digestate adsorbent upstream the adsorption experiment. Washed and not washed adsorbents were tested and the differences between them in terms of dye removal were compared. Moreover, experimental data were fitted by pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order, and intra-partial diffusion kinetic models as well as Langmuir, Freundlich, and Sips isotherm models. The results from fitted models showed that the adsorption of various dyes onto the digestate was mostly well fitted by the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model.

Using solar energy to catalyse photo-driven processes to address the energy crisis and environmental pollution plays a role in the path to a sustainable society. Many oxide-based materials, especially perovskite oxides, have been widely investigated as catalysts for photocatalysis in energy and environment because of the low-cost and earth-abundant and good performance. At this stage, there is a need to present a scientific-based evaluation of the technologies developed so far and identify the most sustainable technologies and the existing limitations and opportunities for their commercialisation. This work comprehensively investigated the outcomes using various scientometric indices on perovskite oxide-based photo(electro)catalysts for water splitting, nitrogen fixation, carbon dioxide conversion, organic pollutant degradation, current trends and advances in the field. According to the results achieved, efforts in both energy and environment based on perovskite oxides have been initiated in the 1990s and accelerated since the 2010s. China and the United States were identified as the most contributing countries. Based on the results achieved in this study, the main milestones and current trends in the development of this field have been identified. The aim of this research is to provide useful guidelines for the further investigation of perovskite oxide-based catalysts for photoelectrocatalysis and photocatalysis both in energy and environment on the applications such as water splitting, nitrogen fixation, carbon dioxide conversion, and wastewater treatment.

Although the effects of salicylic acid (SA) on increasing plant growth in saline conditions have been well known, the mechanisms of induction of salinity tolerance, especially in quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.), are not fully understood. In the present work, two quinoa genotypes (Titicaca and Giza1) were treated with different SA concentrations (0, 0.75, and 1.5 mM) under varied irrigation water salinities (0, 7, 14, and 21 dS m−1). Salinity decreased shoot and root growth, potassium (K+) concentration, and potassium to sodium ratio (K/Na) and increased sodium (Na+) and chlorine (Cl−) concentrations in both cultivars. Calcium (Ca2+) and magnesium (Mg2+) concentrations increased in 7 dS m−1 but decreased in higher salinities. The growth and salinity tolerance of Giza1 were higher, while the growth of Giza1 increased and of Titicaca decreased in high salinity. Salicylic acid at 0.75-mM concentration increased shoot and root growth and improved the ions concentration in favor of the plant, while the 1.5-mM concentration either had no significant effect or had a negative impact. The ions distribution estimated by K/Na selectivity and storage factor (SF) indicated quinoa accumulated more ions in roots under saline conditions. Salicylic acid increased NaSF, ClSF, and MgSF and decreased KSF and CaSF, meaning less Na+, Cl−, and Mg2+ and more K+ and Ca2+ transferred to shoots in SA-treated plants. Importantly, Giza1, as the more tolerant cultivar, had higher NaSF and ClSF and lower KSF, CaSF, and MgSF. In general, the concentrations of ions in roots were higher than in shoots. The results indicated more ions accumulation in the root could be one of the most important mechanisms of salinity tolerance in quinoa, and the more tolerant cultivar (Giza1) transferred less Na+ and Cl− and more K+ and Ca2+ and Mg2+ to the shoot.
