Summary: Background: Identifying novel epigenetic signatures associated with serum immunoglobulin E (IgE) may improve our understanding of molecular mechanisms underlying asthma and IgE-mediated diseases. Methods: We performed an epigenome-wide association study using whole blood from Framingham Heart Study (FHS; n = 3,471, 46% females) participants and validated results using the Childhood Asthma Management Program (CAMP; n = 674, 39% females) and the Genetic Epidemiology of Asthma in Costa Rica Study (CRA; n = 787, 41% females). Using the closest gene to each IgE-associated CpG, we highlighted biologically plausible pathways underlying IgE regulation and analyzed the transcription patterns linked to IgE-associated CpGs (expression quantitative trait methylation loci; eQTMs). Using prior UK Biobank summary data from genome-wide association studies of asthma and allergy, we performed Mendelian randomization (MR) for causal inference testing using the IgE-associated CpGs from FHS with methylation quantitative trait loci (mQTLs) as instrumental variables. Findings: We identified 490 statistically significant differentially methylated CpGs associated with IgE in FHS, of which 193 (39.3%) replicated in CAMP and CRA (FDR < 0.05). Gene ontology analysis revealed enrichment in pathways related to transcription factor binding, asthma, and other immunological processes. eQTM analysis identified 124 cis-eQTMs for 106 expressed genes (FDR < 0.05). Traditionally, basketball research has used game-related statistics in order to discriminate winning and losing teams. Unfortunately, most investigations refer exclusively to the analysis of men's competitions. In this sense, Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games created a unique opportunity to make gender performance comparison feasible, since it provided same period and environmental conditions for both genders. The aim of this study was to identify which game-related statistics best discriminated winning and losing teams in men and women’s team playing Tokyo 2020 Basketball Olympic Tournament. All statistical data for the 26 games of each gender were obtained from the FIBA website. The MANOVA and discriminant analysis models were run to check differences according to gender and game outcome. The main results revealed 2-point field-goals percentage, defensive rebounds, assists, points in the paint, and effective field goal percentage as key variables to succeed in men and women’s games. However, there were gender discrepancies on 2-point field-goals made, points from turnovers, turnover per ball possession rate (relevant only when discriminating men’s winning teams), and fastbreak points, offensive rebounds percentage, and free-throw rate (only for women’s winning teams). Winning and losing discriminant statistics were quite similar for both, men and women’s teams when only considering traditional box-score stats, but not when analyzing advanced stats.

O objetivo deste estudo foi caracterizar e comparar as características técnicas e temporais das partidas de Para-Badminton (PBd) para usuários de cadeiras de rodas (WH - Wheelchair) através do scout. Foi realizado um estudo descritivo com análise inferencial para comparação entre grupos. Durante um Campeonato Mundial da modalidade foram filmados e analisados seis jogos de PBd das classes WH1 e WH2, da categoria simples masculina. Analisaram-se as variáveis técnicas e temporais e os resultados apontaram que o tempo total (TT) de jogo das categorias WH1 e WH2 não apresentou diferenças estatísticas significativas, além disso, o tempo de rali (TR) da classe WH2 apresentou-se maior que o tempo de pausa (TP), caracterizando mais intensidade de jogo. Os itens que apresentaram diferenças estatísticas significativas entre as categorias foram: tempo de descanso (TD), frequência de golpes (FG), densidade de jogo (DJ) e golpes por rali (GR). Quanto aos fundamentos executados, o único que apresentou diferença expressiva foi o drive, golpe menos utilizado nas partidas. Os fundamentos mais utilizados foram o clear, o lob, o drop e o net-shot; e o número de erros não forçados (ENF) foi maior que os pontos vencedores (PV). Conclui-se assim, que é possível caracterizar e comparar as características técnicas e temporais das partidas de PBd utilizando o scout como ferramenta de análise de jogo. ABSTRACT. The aim of this study was to characterize and compare technical and temporal characteristics of PBd matches in WH1 and WH2 classes (WH - wheelchair) through the scout. A descriptive study was carried out with inferential analysis for comparison between groups. Six PBd matches (WH1/WH2 classes, men single) were filmed and analyzed during a World Championship. The temporal and technical variables were analyzed. The results show that: total time of WH1 and WH2 categories did not present significant statistical differences and WH2 class rally time is higher than the pause time, characterizing greater intensity of the game. The items that presented significant statistical differences among the categories were: rest time, strokes frequency, game density, rally strokes. As for the strokes executed, the only one that presented significant difference was drive, the least used stroke in the games. The most used strokes were clear, lob, drop and net-shot; and the number of non-forced errors were greater than winning points. The conclusion is that is possible to characterize and compare technical and temporal characteristics of PBd games using scout as a game analysis tool.

Abstract Aims: to identify and describe the clustering of characteristics related to running amongst Brazilian runners using latent class analysis and to verify if there is a profile associated with better performance. Material and Methods: a sample of 1149 Brazilian runners answered an online questionnaire, that provided information about biological (sex, age, height, weight), training (running pace, frequency and volume/week, motivation), and socioeconomic factors, as well as a multidimensional questionnaire of fear of failure. Latent Class Analysis was used to identify subgroups of Brazilian runners, based on BMI, training volume and frequency/week, motivation, socioeconomic factors, and the fear of failure. Further, a χ2 test was computed to verify statistical differences in the frequency of the descriptive variables between classes. Finally, binary logistic regression analysis estimated factors associated with running performance, with running pace as the dependent variable. Results: It was possible to identify two different classes among Brazilian runners, which were called “amateur runners” and “recreational runners”. Variables that highlighted classes’ differences were: volume and frequency training/week, motivation for the practice, and BMI. Regarding the running performance, logistic regression analysis showed that men (OR=5.39; 95%CI=4.00-7.25), young runners (OR=0.38; 95%CI=0.28-0.51), and “amateur runners” (OR=4.19; 95%CI=2.95-5.94) were more prone to have higher performance. Conclusion: Two distinct classes were found among Brazilian runners that were linked to their performance, highlighting that even among non-professional runners, differences can be observed regarding their classification. Hence, future studies should consider using these classes to properly stratify or identify non-professional runners.

High-intensity interval training (HIIT) has numerous external load control variables. The management of these variables makes the physiological responses and performance presented by athletes also modify. The present study aimed to assess the activity of CK and LDH enzymes, performance and metabolic responses caused by two HIIT protocols above the maximum in male recreational runners. Fifteen recreational male runners performed two HIIT protocols in randomized order with multiple conditions: 1) H15 (n = 15), with a HIIT protocol of 15:15 work-recovery duration, and 2) H30 (n = 15) with a HIIT protocol of 30:30 work-recovery duration. Both protocols were performed at similar intensity (130% vV̇O2max), one set until voluntary exhaustion. Blood samples were collected and used to capture the levels and activities of blood lactate (BLac: mmol⋅L–1), glucose (GLU: mg⋅dL–1), creatine kinase (CK: U⋅L–1), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH: U⋅L–1). BLac and GLU were collected at pre, five, and ten minutes after the H15 and H30 protocols were performed. Blood samples were used to measure the activities of CK and LDH enzymes, which were verified 24 h before and 48 h after the protocols. The distance traveled (m), total time (s), and bouts performed (rep) were also registered. Significant differences between conditions H15 and H30 were observed in the bouts performed (p = 0.001; ES = 1.19). Several statistical differences were found over time for BLac [pre vs. post 5 (both conditions: p = 0.001), pre vs. post 10 (both conditions: p = 0.001), and post 5 vs. post 10 (H30: p = 0.004)], CK [pre vs. post 24 (H15: p < 0.001; ES = 0.97 and H30: p = 0.001; ES = 0.74) post 24 vs. post 48 (H30: p = 0.03; ES = 0.56)], and LDH [pre vs. post24 (H15: p = 0.008; ES = 1.07 and H30: p = 0.022; ES = 0.85). No statistical differences between conditions were observed for any blood parameter. Thus, the volunteers exhibited equal performance in both protocols, which resulted in a similar physiological response. Despite this similarity, in comparison to H15, the H30 protocol presented lower CK activity post 48 and lactate levels after 10 min post protocol.

Para-badminton has performance classes which consider the impairment degree of each athlete; two of them use a wheelchair and are identified as Wheelchair 1 (WH1) and Wheelchair 2 (WH2). Due to the difference in functionality of players between the classes, the match characteristics of WH1 and WH2 games are expected to be different. Therefore, the objective of our study was to describe and compare the temporal and technical characteristics of classes WH1 and WH2. Twenty-three matches covering both WH1 and WH2 classes for men’s singles performed during the first phase of Brazil Para-badminton Championship 2018 were filmed and assessed. There were differences between all temporal characteristics, except in relation to the rally time and frequency of strokes, which suggested that the WH2 matches were more intense and more prolonged. Introdução: No basquetebol, atletas substitutos que entrem na partida apenas no segundo quarto de jogo (Q2) permanecem inativos por um longo, porém não objetivamente conhecido período de tempo. Objetivo: determinar a duração média do primeiro período (Q1) do basquetebol profissional, a duração média entre o término do aquecimento e início da partida (AQ-IP) e do segundo quarto (AQ-Q1), considerando diferentes competições e fases. Métodos: A amostra foi composta por 126 jogos de quatro competições Novo Basquete Brasil (NBB 2011/2012), American Cup2017, Eurobasket 2017 e Afrobasket 2017. Foram calculados os percentis de cada variável, além da comparação entre competições e entre fases da competição (fase classificatória e playoffs). The aim of this study was to analyze the effectiveness of long distance passes performed during the 2014 Brazil FIFA World Cup. All 64 matches were analyzed, however, actions performed during overtime were not included in the sample. The study defined long pass as an action made by a player from the defensive midfield aiming at passing the ball to another teammate located on the offensive field. The action result assessment followed these criteria: shots on goal, ball possession maintenance, loss of ball possession and ball possession recovery. Total long distance passes were also considered in the analysis. Throughout the tournament, 4,512 long distance passes were attempted. The main findings were that 59% resulted on loss, 28% on maintenance and 12% on recovery of the ball possession, but only less than 1% resulted in shots on goal (F = 505.5; p

Estudos anteriores mostraram que o nível de atividade física (NAF) não identifica o nível de flexibilidade em adolescentes. No entanto, não ficou estabelecido se isso também pode ser observado em uma amostra com faixa etária mais ampla, incluindo adultos. Este estudo comparou o perfil de flexibilidade em indivíduos estratificados pelo NAF. Foram observados 62 indivíduos assintomáticos, sendo 22 homens e 40 mulheres (29 ± 11 anos, 165 ± 9 cm, 66 ± 14 kg). Foi utilizado o IPAQ (versão curta), com o intuito de aferir o NAF, e o flexiteste para a flexibilidade. Foram calculados o flexíndice e os índices de variabilidade da mobilidade articular. A amostra foi estratificada em função do NAF como grupos Mais Ativo (muito ativo + ativo) e Menos Ativo (irregularmente ativo + sedentário), e dos percentis 25 e 75 da flexibilidade por sexo e idade representando os grupos Flexibilidade Baixa, Moderada e Alta. Foram aplicados teste t de Student e ANOVA com post hoc de Bonferroni, e o qui-quadrado, sendo adotado um alfa de 5%. Os grupos Mais Ativo e Menos Ativo não apresentaram diferença no flexíndice, assim como nos índices de variabilidade (p>0,05). A estratificação em função do percentil da flexibilidade, a prevalência de indivíduos mais ativos fisicamente foi de 92,9%, 73,1% e 59,1% em relação aos menos ativos, para Flexibilidade Alta, Moderada e Baixa, respectivamente (p 0.05). Stratification according to the flexibility percentile, the prevalence of more physically active individuals was 92.9%, 73.1% and 59.1% compared to less active, for Flexibility High, Moderate and Low, respectively (p < 0.001). The values Flexindex were similar between more and less active individuals. However, individuals classified in the highest percentiles of flexibility had higher NAF.

The aim of this research was to evaluate the performance and tactical behavior of youth soccer players of teams from base categories. The sample consisted of 152 male soccer players aged 11-17 years who participated in the in the U-13 (n = 50), U-15 (n = 62) and U-17 (n = 40) Sergipe State Championship in the year 2015. The System of Tactical Assessment in Soccer (FUT-SAT) was used to identify the players’ tactical behavior based on the fundamental tactical principles. The main results of the study show that players presented higher tactical offensive performance (50.8 ± 9.8 points) compared to defensive performance (34.3 ± 5.7 points) (p < 0.001; d = 2,1), and the Depth Mobility principle presented the highest performance indices in the offensive phase (64.1 ± 8.7; F = 54.4; p < 0.001; partial ƞ² = 0.26). Defensive Coverage showed the highest performance indexes in the defensive phase (46.1 ± 24.3; F = 54.4; p < 0.001; partial ƞ² = 0.26).

Resumo O estudo verificou a evolução do basquetebol brasileiro a partir dos índices de desempenho (ID) das equipes em três temporadas do Novo Basquete Brasil (2009 a 2012) e determinou valores de referência (percentis) dos principais ID. Os dados foram coletados no site da Liga Nacional de Basquete. Foram analisados em 726 jogos os ID mais frequentes na análise do jogo de basquetebol pela ANOVA de um fator (post hoc de Tukey). A temporada 2011/12 apresentou menor número de arremessos de três pontos e maior de dois pontos, melhor aproveitamento nos lances livres e redução nos rebotes ofensivos. Os percentis indicam alto grau de exigência para a performance das equipes nos ID analisados. Nota-se uma tendência à modificação do estilo de jogo das equipes ao longo das três temporadas.

O objetivo do estudo foi comparar o efeito dos alongamentos geral e específico sobre a capacidade imediata de gerar força muscular com a carga autosselecionada em praticantes de treinamento de força. Quatorze homens saudáveis e fisicamente ativos (25 ± 4 anos, 75 ± 8 kg, 173 ± 6 cm) compareceram quatro dias não consecutivos ao local do estudo. Nas visitas 1 e 2 (Controle), após um aquecimento padronizado, os participantes executaram o máximo de repetições com a carga autosselecionada para 10 repetições (RMC10R) no supino reto. Nas visitas 3 e 4 após a realização de um aquecimento padronizado, seguido de exercícios de alongamento (Alongamento Específico versus Geral), os indivíduos foram convidados a executar as RMC10R. Dez atletas do sexo masculino, em dois dias distintos, realizaram aquecimento seguido ou não de um exercício de alta intensidade. Logo após, realizaram jogo simulado com duração de 10 min: Jogo Estímulo Prévio Leve (JLEV) x Jogo Estímulo Prévio Vigoroso (JVIG). A percepção de esforço (RPE) foi registrada. O desempenho foi avaliado por: Instrumento de Avaliação do Desempenho Técnico-Tático Individual no Basquetebol (IAD-BB) e Estatísticas de Jogo. A RPE nos aquecimentos foram equivalentes e o JVIG apresentou maior valor que o JLEV (7,6 ± 1,1 e 5,7 ± 1,3 u.a.). Não houve diferença no desempenho técnico-tático geral, nos componentes específicos do IAD-BB. No JVIG houve menos arremessos de 3 pontos, assistências, bolas perdidas e aproveitamento dos arremessos de quadra, contra-ataques bem-sucedidos, pontos no garrafão, infiltrações com bola, arremessos do tipo catch and shoot, aproveitamento das bandejas, total de arremessos tentados e aumento nos rebotes defensivos. Conclui-se o esforço de alta intensidade prévio não interferiu no desempenho técnico-tático dos jogadores de basquetebol. Regular physical exercise tends to benefit people with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS). The effects have been observed regarding aerobic power and strength; however, results concerning flexibility have been controversial. In general, studies have evaluated specific joints or tests involving only a single body movement. The aim of this study was to compare the flexibility profile of FMS and asymptomatic women using a more comprehensive test protocol regarding the number of movements and joints involved. The sample consisted of 30 women divided into two groups: asymptomatic (n = 15; mean age: 50.2 ± 8.2 years; mean weight: 63.0 ± 9.6 kg; mean height: 157 ± 6 cm) and fibromyalgia (n = 15; mean age: 47.3 ± 9.4 years; mean weight: 61.9 ± 12.2 kg; mean height: 159 ± 7 cm). Flexibility was measured using the Flexitest, which was evaluated by the global index of flexibility (Flexindex), and the five indices of variability of joint mobility: intermovement (IVIM), interjoint (IVIA), flexion-extension (IVFE), between segment (IVES) and distal-proximal (IVDP). All of the indices were calculated based on the results of the 20 movements of the Flexitest. There was no difference between groups (44.4 ± 3.7 vs. 45.7 ± 4.1 points, for asymptomatic and fibromyalgia, respectively; p = 0.379; 95% confidence interval (CI): -4.2 to 1.6). Most of the sample (83%) showed an average level of flexibility based on reference values for gender and age. Only IVIM showed a significant difference between the groups. Asymptomatic and fibromyalgic women have similar overall levels of flexibility but with different profiles.

Abstract AIMS This study aimed to verify th erelation ship between of anthropometric and physical performance variables with game-related statistics in professional elite basketball players during a competition. METHODS Eleven male basketball players were evaluated during 10 weeks in two distinct moments (regular season and playoffs). Overall, 11 variables of physical fitness and 13 variables of game-related statistics were analysed. RESULTS The following significant Pearson’scorrelations were found in regular season: percentage of fat mass with assists (r = -0.62) and steals (r = -0.63); height (r = 0.68), lean mass (r = 0.64), and maximum strength (r = 0.67) with blocks; squat jump with steals (r = 0.63); and time in the T-test with success ful two-point field-goals (r = -0.65), success ful free-throws (r = -0.61), and steals (r = -0.62). However, in playoffs, only stature and lean mass maintained these correlations (p ≤ 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The anthropometric and physical characteristics of the players showed few correlations with the game-related statistics in regular season, and these correlations are even lower in the playoff games of a professional elite Champion ship, wherefore, not being good predictors of technical performance.

O objetivo do estudo foi descrever os indicadores de desempenho no voleibol sentado a partir das características da pontuação. A amostra foi composta de 12 equipes em diferentes competições esportivas: alto rendimento internacional, alto rendimento nacional e nível intermediário nacional. Foi avaliado um total de 1026 rallies distribuídos por 24 sets. Para obter as características da pontuação (acertos – AC, erros – ERR e erros do adversário - EADV) foi utilizado um scout de finalização. Os resultados encontraram uma predominância das ações de AC sobre os EADV. As ações ofensivas apresentaram maiores frequências no ataque, nos contra-ataques e nas ações de bloqueio. Em relação aos ERR as maiores frequências ocorreram na recepção, no saque e no toque na rede. Ao obter informações do aproveitamento das equipes o estudo possibilita à modalidade elementos a serem considerados em suas abordagens técnicas e táticas.

Post-exercise hypotension (PEH) is characterized by a decrease in blood pressure (BP) in relation to pre-exercise levels and has been intensively studied in different populations after different modes of exercise. Several mechanisms are associated with PEH, which makes it a multifactorial condition. However, over the last decade, some studies aimed to investigate the possible influence of ethnic and genetic factors on PEH. Thus, the purpose of this study was to review the environmental and, mainly, ethnic and genetic factors related to PEH. The studies used herein were obtained from a review of the following online databases: MEDLINE, SciELO and, Portal Capes. In relation to ethnicity, studies appear to indicate an unfavorable trend toward development of PEH in blacks as compared to whites, although this cannot be stated categorically. As for genetic studies and PEH, we stress the importance of these studies and highlight the need for selecting candidate genes for research on the basis of the physiological system implicated in BP regulation. Published studies have basically examined the relationship between PEH and mutations in genes that express proteins involved in the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. In this genetic sense, it seems that the greatest decline in PA occurs mainly after low-intensity aerobic exercise performed by normotensive or borderline hypertensive adult men. Further studies on the subject are required.

A hipotensão pós-exercício caracteriza-se pela redução dos valores pressóricos em relação ao pré-exercício, sendo intensamente estudada em diferentes populações a partir das diversas modalidades de exercício físico. Inúmeros mecanismos relacionam-se à HPE, tornando-a de origem multifatorial. No entanto, na última década, alguns estudos objetivaram investigar possíveis influências de fatores étnicos e genéticos sobre a HPE. Nesse sentido, o objetivo do presente estudo foi revisar os fatores ambientais e principalmente, os étnicos e genéticos relacionados à HPE. Os estudos utilizados nesta revisão de literatura foram obtidos a partir de um levantamento bibliográfico realizado nos seguintes bancos de dados disponíveis na internet: Medline, SciELO e Portal Capes. Com relação à etnia, verifica-se que os estudos apontam desfavorável tendência aos indivíduos negros em obter HPE quando comparados aos de etnia branca, embora ainda não seja possível afirmar de maneira categórica. Quanto aos estudos genéticos e HPE, ressalta-se a importância destes estudos, assim como a necessidade de que a seleção dos genes candidatos à investigação seja feita baseando-se no sistema fisiológico implicado na regulação da PA. Basicamente, os estudos publicados analisaram a relação entre HPE e mutações de genes que expressam proteínas envolvidas no sistema renina-angiotensina-aldosterona. Nesse sentido, parece que o maior decaimento da PA ocorre, principalmente, após exercícios aeróbios de baixa intensidade realizados por homens adultos e normotensos limítrofes ou hipertensos, sendo necessários mais estudos acerca do tema.

Objetivou-se analisar o estilo de vida de acadêmicos de Educação Física de uma universidade pública do estado de Sergipe, Brasil. A amostra probabilística foi de 217 alunos da Universidade Federal de Sergipe com 20,6 (±3,1) anos de idade, sendo 105 da licenciatura e 112 do bacharelado. Da amostra analisada, 3,3% (IC95%: 0,9-1,6) apresentou um estilo de vida inadequado. A maior parte dos alunos, 57,4% (IC95%: 50,7-64,0), não atendeu as recomendações para atividade física. Estudantes da licenciatura estavam mais inadequados que os do bacharelado no conjunto do estilo de vida global e nas condutas de sono, cinto de segurança, estresse e sexo seguro. Os achados contribuem para que a universidade elabore campanhas e programas de extensão no campus para promoção do estilo de vida saudável.

It is possible for HR to increase rapidly within just few seconds of exercise as a result of the vagal inhibition refl ex. This kind of situation is quite common in sports in which movements may be short and sudden, such as judo and tennis, and this information could be used for detecting sports talent. During prolonged exercise, HR tends to follow the level of intensity of effort, especially in continuous exercise. Maximum HR determined by equations exhibits signifi cant estimation errors and should be used with caution. Higher values suggest a better prognosis in terms of risk of mortality. Fast recovery of baseline HR after exercise, while indicating low cardiovascular risk, does not necessarily denote good aerobic fi tness. Evidence also suggests that resistance exercises evoke a lower cardiovascular response than endurance exercises. In conclusion, the utilization of HR for the purposes of diagnosis, prognosis or exercise prescription should be evidence based, in order to diminish the risk of interpretation errors, and also to increase applicability. RESUMO Nosso objetivo foi apresentar e discutir a resposta da freqüência cardíaca (FC) de modo a favorecer sua interpretação clínica, epidemiológica e para a prescrição do exercício. Em repouso, a FC é um indicador da condição autonômica do indivíduo, e que apesar de ser infl uenciada pela potência aeróbia máxima, não deve ser utilizada para sua determinação. A FC pode aumentar bastante em apenas poucos segundos de exercício em decorrência do refl exo de inibição vagal. Este tipo de situação é comum em esportes cujos movimentos podem ser súbitos e de curta duração, como o judô e o tênis, sendo possível utilizar esta informação para detecção de talentos esportivos. Durante o exercício prolongado, a FC tende a acompanhar o nível de intensidade do esforço, principalmente em exercícios de característica contínua. A FC máxima determinada por equações apresenta erros de estimativa expressivos e deve ser utilizada com certa parcimônia. Valores mais altos de FC máxima sugerem um prognóstico mais favorável em termos de risco de mortalidade. Uma rápida recuperação da FC pós-exercício, apesar de denotar baixo risco cardiovascular, não representa obrigatoriamente boa condição aeróbia. As evidências também sugerem que exercícios de fortalecimento muscular propiciam menor solicitação cardiovascular que os de característica predominantemente aeróbia. Concluindo, a utilização da FC como ferramenta diagnóstica, prognóstica ou mesmo para a prescrição do exercício deve ser baseada em evidências científicas, de modo a diminuir os riscos e equívocos de sua interpretação e, por outro lado, potencializar sua aplicação.

OBJETIVO: Testar a viabilidade operacional e validar um protocolo do teste de exercício de 4s (T4s) realizado em posição ortostática (ORTO). MÉTODOS: O ORTO, similar ao protocolo convencional (CICLO), ou seja, exercício súbito do 4º ao 8º segundo de uma apnéia inspiratória máxima de 12s, ao invés da pedalada rápida (sem carga), em caminhada estacionária acelerada (flexão alternada dos quadris). Índice vagal cardíaco (IVC), adimensional, calculado pela razão entre as durações dos intervalo RRs imediatamente antes do exercício (RRB) e o mais curto durante o exercício (RRC), medido em traçado de eletrocardiograma a uma resolução de 10ms. Avaliados 47 indivíduos (40±17 anos, 169±9 cm, 72±14 kg) de ambos os sexos, saudáveis ou não, que realizaram randomicamente três repetições consecutivas nos dois protocolos, sendo a primeira utilizada apenas para familiarização dos procedimentos. RESULTADOS: Embora tenha havido diferenças no IVC para os dois protocolos (1,48±0,04 vs 1,42±0,04; pOBJECTIVE: To test the operational viability of and validate the 4-second exercise test (4sET) protocol in the orthostatic position (ORTHO). METHODS: The ORTHO protocol, an alternative to the conventional protocol (CYCLO), was used. The ORTHO protocol consists of performing sudden exercise in the orthostatic position - accelerated stationary walking (alternate upward flexion of the thighs) - from the fourth to the eighth second of a 12-second maximum inspiratory apnea, instead of rapid cycling without load. The adimensional cardiac vagal index (CVI) was calculated using the ratio between the longest RR interval (RRB) - the one immediately before, or the first during exercise - and the shortest RR interval during exercise - usually the last (RRC) - measured on electrocardiographic tracings at a 10-ms resolution. Forty-seven individuals (40±17 years, 169±9 cm, 72±14 kg) of both sexes, healthy or unhealthy, randomly underwent 3 consecutive repetitions of the 2 protocols, the first being performed only to acquaint patients with the procedure. Muitas vezes, adotamos práticas que não são sustentadas pela ciência, apenas para fazer algo diferente. Deste modo, é bastante comum que a prescrição dos exercícios para o ensino dos esportes seja pautado quase que exclusivamente na experiência, criatividade e bom senso dos professores/treinadores. Sendo assim, este trabalho visa à atualização de profissionais que trabalham com o ensino dos esportes, em especial, o basquetebol, no tocante aos métodos de ensino e à seleção de exercícios e atividades para este fi m. Analisamos, sob a luz da literatura científica, os fatores determinantes para a escolha dos métodos adequados para o ensino do esporte para crianças e jovens e a fundamentação teórico-científica que venha a justificar a utilização dos exercícios. Após a seleção das palavras-chave relativas ao tema em discussão, ou seja, os aspectos relacionados ao processo ensino-aprendizagem e seus métodos de ensino, dominância lateral e lateralidade, e a estabilização do padrão de movimento, foram identificados os estudos que abordavam o assunto nas bases de dados Scielo e Pubmed, além de artigos e livros contemplados na base de dados Google Acadêmico. Existem diversos fatores inerentes ao processo de ensino-aprendizagem que tornam os alunos/atletas mais ou menos suscetíveis à assimilação da informação, à aquisição de novas habilidades motoras e ao aprimoramento (consolidação) do gesto esportivo já adquirido. A escolha de métodos e exercícios/atividades que o professor/treinador deve fazer precisa ser também calcada nas evidências científicas e não apenas em sua experiência pessoal ou dependente quase que exclusivamente do bom senso e criatividade vigentes.

ObjectiveWe sought to identify rare variants influencing brain imaging phenotypes in the Framingham Heart Study by performing whole genome sequence association analyses within the Trans-Omics for Precision Medicine Program.MethodsWe performed association analyses of cerebral and hippocampal volumes and white matter hyperintensity (WMH) in up to 2,180 individuals by testing the association of rank-normalized residuals from mixed-effect linear regression models adjusted for sex, age, and total intracranial volume with individual variants while accounting for familial relatedness. We conducted gene-based tests for rare variants using (1) a sliding-window approach, (2) a selection of functional exonic variants, or (3) all variants.ResultsWe detected new loci in 1p21 for cerebral volume (minor allele frequency [MAF] 0.005, p = 10-8) and in 16q23 for hippocampal volume (MAF 0.05, p = 2.7 × 10-8). Previously identified associations in 12q24 for hippocampal volume (rs7294919, p = 4.4 × 10-4) and in 17q25 for WMH (rs7214628, p = 2.0 × 10-3) were confirmed. Gene-based tests detected associations (p ≤ 2.3 × 10-6) in new loci for cerebral (5q13, 8p12, 9q31, 13q12-q13, 15q24, 17q12, 19q13) and hippocampal volumes (2p12) and WMH (3q13, 4p15) including Alzheimer disease- (UNC5D) and Parkinson disease-associated genes (GBA). Pathway analyses evidenced enrichment of associated genes in immunity, inflammation, and Alzheimer disease and Parkinson disease pathways.ConclusionsWhole genome sequence-wide search reveals intriguing new loci associated with brain measures. Replication of novel loci is needed to confirm these findings.
