Our study explores the impact of sudden gap formation on the bark volatile and internal chemical profiles of Norway spruce trees during the initial dry year of research plot 2018 following gap formation. We investigated the annual variation in two main physiological traits of Norway spruce trees at the forest edge (FE) and in the forest interior (FI): bark monoterpene (MT) emission spectra and internal phloem MT composition. Given that gap formation increases the solar radiation dose and temperature for trees at the forest edge, we hypothesized that the concentrations of airborne terpenes released from the tree bark and internal phloem terpenes will increase as a consequence of induced tree defenses. Our findings demonstrate significant increases in both airborne terpene concentrations and internal terpene composition in trees at the forest edge compared to the control trees in the forest interior. This study provides novel insights into the annual dynamics of bark monoterpenes following forest edge establishment and underscores the physiological changes experienced by trees in response to the gap formation.

Norway spruce is expected to suffer from drought stress and other manifestations of climate change. This study relies on a manipulative experiment with drought-stressed and well-watered (control) seedlings, comprising five provenances of Norway spruce distributed along a steep elevational transect from 550 to 1,280 m a.s.l. within the natural range. Seedlings were subjected to measurement of physiological traits (content of phytohormones and monoterpenes, slow and fast chlorophyll a fluorescence kinetics, gas exchange, hyperspectral indices), and genotyping at 8 nuclear microsatellite loci. Comparison of the coefficient of differentiation at neutral loci (FST) vs. differentiation at phenotypic traits (PST) was used to identify traits underlying divergent selection. In total, 18 traits exhibited a significant PST – FST difference. However, the consistency in differentiation patterns between drought-stressed and control plants was limited, only three traits exhibited signals of selection under both treatments. This outcome indicates that the identified differentiation patterns can only be interpreted in the context of environmental setup of the experiment, and highlights the importance of common gardens in adaptation research, as they allow both elimination of environment-induced phenotypic variation and studying genotype-by-environment interaction in physiological responses to environmental stresses.

Satellite‐derived global digital elevation models (DEMs) are essential for providing the topographic information needed in a wide range of hydrological applications. However, their use is limited by spatial resolution and vertical bias due to sensor limitations in observing bare terrain. Significant efforts have been made to improve the resolution of global DEMs (e.g., TanDEM‐X) and create bare‐earth DEMs (e.g., FABDEM, MERIT, CEDTM). We evaluated the vertical accuracy of bare‐earth and global DEMs in Central European mountains and submontane regions, and assessed how DEM resolution, vegetation offset removal, land cover, and terrain slope affect stream network delineation. Using lidar‐derived DTM and national stream networks as references, we found that: (a) bare‐earth DEMs outperform global DEMs across all land cover types. RMSEs increased with increasing slope for all DEMs in non‐forest areas. In forests, however, the negative effect of the slope was outweighed by the vegetation offset even for bare‐earth DTMs; (b) the accuracy of derived stream networks was affected by terrain slope and land cover more than by the vertical accuracy of DEMs. Stream network delineation performed poorly in non‐forest areas and relatively well in forests. Increasing slope improved the streams delineation performance; (c) using DEMs with higher resolution (e.g., 12 m TanDEM‐X) improved stream network delineation, but increasing resolution also increased the need for effective vegetation bias removal. Our results indicate that vertical accuracy alone does not reflect how well DEMs perform in stream network delineation. This underscores the need to include stream network performance in DEM quality rankings. Plain Language Summary: We evaluated the accuracy of different types of digital elevation models (DEMs) and derived stream networks in Central European mountains. Our focus was on satellite‐derived global DEMs, including bare‐earth DEMs (i.e., DEMs with vegetation and building offsets removed). Using lidar DTM and national stream networks as references, we found that bare‐earth DEMs consistently outperformed other DEMs across all evaluated land cover types. We observed that slope and land cover have contrasting effects on the accuracy of DEMs and delineated stream networks. As slope increases, DEMs accuracy decreases, while for delineated stream networks, the opposite trend is observed. Where land cover is concerned, DEMs' vertical accuracies (i.e., how well they represent the bare‐earth terrain) are lowest in forests, whereas the accuracy of stream network is lowest in non‐forest areas. Furthermore, we demonstrated that slope and land cover type considerably affect the accuracy of stream network delineation, more so than the vertical accuracy of the DEMs. Additionally, we found that using DEMs with higher resolution can improve stream network delineation, but increasing resolution also increases the need for effective vegetation bias removal. Therefore, removing vegetation and buildings offset from Tandem‐X DEM at a 12 m resolution would represent a major next step forward. Filtering approaches on Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) data differ considerably across existing studies and it is yet unclear which method is the most effective. We conducted an in‐depth analysis of GEDI's vertical accuracy in mapping terrain and canopy heights across three study sites in temperate forests and grasslands in Spain, California, and New Zealand. We started with unfiltered data (2,081,108 footprints) and describe a workflow for data filtering using Level 2A parameters and for geolocation error mitigation. We found that retaining observations with at least one detected mode eliminates noise more effectively than sensitivity. The accuracy of terrain and canopy height observations depended considerably on the number of modes, beam sensitivity, landcover, and terrain slope. In dense forests, a minimum sensitivity of 0.9 was required, while in areas with sparse vegetation, sensitivity of 0.5 sufficed. Sensitivity greater than 0.9 resulted in an overestimation of canopy height in grasslands, especially on steep slopes, where high sensitivity led to the detection of multiple modes. We suggest excluding observations with more than five modes in grasslands. We found that the most effective strategy for filtering low‐quality observations was to combine the quality flag and difference from TanDEM‐X, striking an optimal balance between eliminating poor‐quality data and preserving a maximum number of high‐quality observations. Positional shifts improved the accuracy of GEDI terrain estimates but not of vegetation height estimates. Our findings guide users to an easy way of processing of GEDI footprints, enabling the use of the most accurate data and leading to more reliable applications. The quality of terrain and canopy observations is influenced by acquisition conditions and land (cover) characteristics. Consequently, a considerable amount of GEDI observations is discarded as noise, and further filtering is necessary to retain only high‐quality observations. Our objective was to assess how environmental and acquisition characteristics influence the accuracy of terrain and canopy height of GEDI observations. Although the main objective of the GEDI mission was to map forests, we also focused on grasslands. GEDI serves not only as an essential source of information on canopy height but also provides accurate terrain observations. Furthermore, it is important to know that GEDI does not overestimate the height of low vegetation as this can result in an overestimation of carbon storage. We distinguished four steps in the GEDI data processing: (a) removal of noise observations, (b) removal of low‐quality data, (c) effect of additional acquisition characteristics, and (d) mitigation of geolocation error. We found that the accuracy of terrain and canopy height observations depended considerably on the number of detected modes, beam sensitivity, landcover, and terrain slope. Aim: The distribution of within‐species lineages has been affected by Quaternary climate changes, and population differentiation has been influenced by species life history traits. We investigated whether the distribution of individual mitochondrial genetic lineages reflects the constituent species' traits. Using the functionally diverse group of butterflies, we examined which lineages are present in Central Europe, an important suture zone. Location: Czech Republic and Western Palearctic. Taxon: A total of 140 butterfly species. Methods: We sequenced DNA barcodes (cytochrome c oxidase 1) (959 sequences) of the entire Czech Republic butterfly fauna and used Barcoding of Life Data System to visualise the species' biogeographic patterns across Europe. We categorised the distribution patterns of lineages inhabiting the Czech Republic, and used multivariate statistics to interpret these categories by the butterflies' habitats, life history traits and threat levels. Results: Open habitat dwellers with specialist traits belonged to Eastern, Southern and temperate lineages. Habitat generalists and woodland dwellers belonged to the Western lineage, formed several lineages or displayed low genetic diversity; they often developed on woody plants, were large‐winged and had long flight periods. The most threatened species were the specialists of Southern, Eastern and temperate lineages. Main Conclusions: The distribution of lineages in Central Europe reflects the history of Quaternary ecosystems: during cold periods of the Pleistocene, the diverse open habitats prevailed and species could expand westwards. Such species also suffer the most under the current anthropogenic habitat alteration. On the other hand, the mobile generalists and woodland dwellers expanded to Central Europe during the Holocene. Our approach of linking the distribution of lineages with species traits can be transferred to other study systems, and we show that DNA barcoding of under‐sampled areas represents a powerful tool for discovering the driving forces of biogeography. Agricultural wastes can be used as an alternative to the existing sorbents for the removal of metals or synthetic dyes from contaminated liquids. In this work, the fine powdered biomass of the hop (Humulus lupulus L.) variety Osvald's clone 72 and variety Bohemie as a sorbent for the removal of Cd from aqueous solutions of CdCl2 spiked with radionuclide 109Cd and synthetic dyes thioflavine T (ThT) or methylene blue (MB) from single dye solutions under conditions of batch systems was used. The maximum sorption capacity Q = 264 µmol Cd/g (d.w.) was found in the case of the leaf biomass of hop (H. lupulus L.) variety Osvald's clone 72 at the initial concentration of CdCl2 10,000 µmol/dm3, whereby the sorption capacity decreased in the order Qleaves : Qstems : Qroots = 1.0 : 0.8 : 0.7. The sorbed amount of Cd was removed from the hop biomass with the following increasing desorption efficiency of the extraction reagents: deionised H2O << 0.1 mol/dm3 HCl ≤ 0.1 mol/dm3 EDTA-Na2. Similarly as in the case of Cd sorption, the kinetics of ThT and MB sorption by the leaf biomass of the hop (H. lupulus L.) variety Bohemie were also showed as two-phase processes. The maximum sorption of ThT approx. Q = 19 mg/g (d.w.) and MB approx. Q = 70 mg/g (d.w.) were found within the range of the initial values of pH 4 – 7. The sorption of both dyes by the leaf biomass from single dye solutions decreased with increasing biomass concentration and on the other hand increased with increasing the initial concentrations of ThT or MB. The process of ThT and MB sorption was better described by the Langmuir model than the Freundlich model of sorption isotherm. From the obtained values of Qmax, it was found that in the case of MB the dried leaf biomass showed more than 2-times higher sorption capacity (Qmax = 184 mg/g; d.w.) in comparison with the value predicted for ThT. Obtained results suggest that dried plant biomass of hop (H. lupulus L.) as agricultural by-products can be used as a potential sorbent for both types of studied contaminants.

Norway spruce is an ecologically and commercially important species, which currently suffers from climate change and is expected to decline because of heat and drought stress. A manipulative experiment with drought-stressed and well-watered (control) seedlings was established, comprising five populations of Norway spruce coming from a small territory but distributed along a steep elevational transect from 550 to 1280 m.a.s.l. Plants were phenotyped at physiological traits (content of phytohormones and monoterpenes, chlorophyll a fluorescence, gas exchange and hyperspectral indices) and genotyped using ddRAD sequencing. After filtering, 34 127 polymorphisms (SNPs) were retained and used for analysis. Association tests revealed 42 SNP-variable pairs located across 29 scaffolds exhibiting significant associations, among them 20 were found for drought-stressed seedlings and 22 for control (watered) plants. However, there was no consistency between drought-stressed and control plants, no SNP-trait pair was common for both treatments. The study demonstrated that the identified genotype–phenotype associations can only be interpreted in the context of environmental setup preceding the assessment of phenotypic traits.
