3. Instructor Credibility as a Mediator of Instructor Communication and Students' Intent to Persist in College

Abstract

This study tested two theoretical models of instructor credibility as a potential mediator between instructors' classroom communication behaviors (nonverbal immediacy, enthusiasm, and homophily) and students' intentions to persist in college. Participants included 570 undergraduate students from three institutions in the South-Central United States. Results of structural equation modeling provided greater support for the partial mediation model, in which nonverbal immediacy had both direct and indirect effects on students' intent to persist, though instructor enthusiasm and homophily were fully mediated by credibility. Overall, students' perceptions of these three instructor behaviors accounted for 56% of the variance in credibility and 43% of the variance in intent to persist. Furthermore, this model proved to be invariant across ethnic groups (Caucasian, African American, and Hispanic), suggesting that these instructor communication behaviors may contribute to positive outcomes for virtually all students, regardless of ethnicity. Abstract

Using a rhetorical, public address approach to conducting a case study analysis, this study argues for the connection between rhetoric, specifically public address, and public relations. This study goes beyond seeking to understand the damage a crisis has caused and, rather, views the discourse as a crucial took for the success of a crisis response method. Within this study, a working definition of the term crisis is created, and the possibility for developing a crisis response model for industry-specific accidents using a hybrid of the crisis communication strategies of Coombs, Benoit, and Hearit is explored. The rhetorical effectiveness of the crisis response and image restoration strategies used by British Petroleum and Phillips Petroleum in response to tragic explosions that occurred at their respective facilities is analyzed. Overall, this study is meant to be an analysis of the use of crisis response strategies in similar accidents in the industrial field and how the communication used affects the stakeholders’ perception of the refineries as a whole. The results of this analysis will contribute to organizational strategy improvement and existing literature on crisis communication and rhetoric. Furthermore, aside from the airline industry, the body of crisis communication literature is lacking in the study of industry-specific crises, particularly in the refinery industry. Therefore, it should be suggested that industry-specific accidents and the crisis response strategies should be studied in hopes of developing a model that could be used for these accidents.

6. Exploring hurtful communication from college teachers to students: A mixed methods study

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to extend teacher misbehavior research via an investigation of teacher communication that is perceived as hurtful by college students. While previous research on teacher misbehavior focuses on the content-oriented dimension of teacher-student communication, this study goes a step further by also considering the relational dimension. A mixed methods approach is used in this study to explore the function of hurtful communication in the teacher-student relationship. There were 34 participants in the first, qualitative, phase of this study; whereas the second, quantitative, phase of this study was comprised of 208 participants. Identified in the results of this study are nine themes of hurtful messages that students perceived teachers to communicate which are also indicative of incompetent or offensive teacher misbehaviors. Face Theory was the framework for this study, as hurtful messages occurred when students perceived their face needs for competence, autonomy, and fellowship were threatened. Following the communication of a hurtful message, students responded using one of three strategies in an attempt to employ corrective facework. Students in the first phase of this study believed their motivation, affective learning, and relational satisfaction was impacted by hurtful messages. As suggested by the results of the second phase of this study, there are differences in the degree of hurtfulness of each type of hurtful message. An increase in hurtfulness resulted in a decrease in relational satisfaction, affective learning, and motivation for students. However, students who perceived that their teacher demonstrated solidarity while communicating a hurtful message exhibited increased levels of affective learning, motivation, and relational satisfaction. The article presents an exploration into crisis communication strategies and public relations response policies and activities within the petroleum industry. The high-profile nature of the oil industry within 21st century news media is cited and discussed as it poses a challenge to the public relations management of risks and industrial accidents. The case study of the refinery explosion of Phillips Petroleum in Pasadena, Texas in 2000 is presented wherein the company's flexible use of rhetoric and communication is analyzed regarding the multiple interested parties involved.
