This deliverable is the third version of the Data Management Plan (DMP) of the Ageing@Work project in accordance with the EC Open Research Data Pilot (ORDP) regulations of the Horizon 2020 programme.

This document is an update of the analysis and systematic review of best practices, technologies and applications presented in D2.2 of Ageing@Work.The objective of this deliverable is once the final solution of the Ageing@Work project is already designed and first version of the solutions implemented ready to be deployed and evaluated, discover new solutions aimed to improve the second version of the Ageing@Work system, and have an updated pull of information to solve the possible issues during the piloting phase. Internet of Things (IoT) technologies are already playing an important role in our daily activities as we use them and rely on them to increase our abilities, connectivity, productivity and quality of life. However, there are still obstacles to achieving a unique interface able to transfer full control to users given the diversity of protocols, properties and specifications in the varied IoT ecosystem. Particularly for the case of home automation systems, there is a high degree of fragmentation that limits interoperability, increasing the complexity and costs of developments and holding back their real potential of positively impacting users. In this article, we propose implementing W3C’s Web of Things Standard supported by home automation ontologies, such as SAREF and UniversAAL, to deploy the Living Lab Gateway that allows users to consume all IoT devices from a smart home, including those physically wired and using KNX® technology. This work, developed under the framework of the EC funded Plan4Act project, includes relevant features such as security, authentication and authorization provision, dynamic configuration and injection of devices, and devices abstraction and mapping into ontologies. Its deployment is explained in two scenarios to show the achieved technology’s degree of integration, the code simplicity for developers and the system’s scalability: one consisted of external hardware interfacing with the smart home, and the other of the injection of a new sensing device. A test was executed providing metrics that indicate that the Living Lab Gateway is competitive in terms of response performance.

Implementing emerging technologies is a complex task which requires time, precision, and organization. The definition of a logical structure for classifying and organizing complex information during the design process of a technological solution provides flexibility while the process becomes more prescriptive. One of the most used methods in the ICT field is the user-centered design methodology (UCD). UCD methodology situates the final user as the cornerstone of the research and development process since the success or failure of a technological solution will depend on users’ acceptance. The following chapter presents experiences, best practices and lessons learned applying UCD methodology in different European projects from several years of work conducted at LifeSTech group from UPM, in areas such as: chronic diseases management, accessibility, and cognitive rehabilitation. Specifically, the chapter explains how the UCD methodology was applied during the different stages of the design and development process for different domains and use cases.

Introduction Home-based programmes for cardiac rehabilitation play a key role in the recovery of patients with coronary artery disease. However, their necessary educational and motivational components have been rarely implemented with the help of modern mobile technologies. We developed a mobile health system designed for motivating patients to adhere to their rehabilitation programme by providing exercise monitoring, guidance, motivational feedback, and educational content. Methods Our multi-disciplinary approach is based on mapping “desired behaviours” into specific system’s specifications, borrowing concepts from Fogg’s Persuasive Systems Design principles. A randomised controlled trial was conducted to compare mobile-based rehabilitation (55 patients) versus standard care (63 patients). Results Some technical issues related to connectivity, usability and exercise sessions interrupted by safety algorithms affected the trial. For those who completed the rehabilitation (19 of 55), results show high levels of both user acceptance and perceived usefulness. Adherence in terms of started exercise sessions was high, but not in terms of total time of performed exercise or drop-outs. Educational level about heart-related health improved more in the intervention group than the control. Exercise habits at 6 months follow-up also improved, although without statistical significance. Discussion Results indicate that the adopted design methodology is promising for creating applications that help improve education and foster better exercise habits, but further studies would be needed to confirm these indications.

The present work seizes the opportunity to counter IoT technology fragmentation that the World Wide Web Consortium is offering with the upcoming standard Web Of Things. A gateway service based on this standard and an air quality manager sensor were designed and implemented in a Smart Home with the aim to develop a tool to manage this critical parameter and improve people's quality of life. The system proved to be able to report and manage the Smart Home devices to reduce Fine Particulate Matter concentration on demand and in real time, also allowing to record data to be consulted by the Smart Home users. The technology produced is agnostic, scalable and replicable in other environments and contexts such as industry, healthcare and Smart Cities among others.

Assistive systems and emerging technologies arecapable of supporting individuals with specific needs and diseaseseffectively. Nonetheless, in the domain of Smart Homes (SH),the interactions tend to become more complex and difficult toadapt to the users, creating a bottleneck for the efficient use andthe acceptability of the interventions. This paper presents bestpractices on personalization and adaptive interaction techniquesin order to homogenize different solutions within the SH, ease theinteraction acceptability by adaptation to specific user needs andimplement better healthcare interventions able to improve theQuality of Life (QoL). The recommendations arise as a resultof previous research studies conducted within the MSCA-ITNproject ACROSSING.

This article describes the procedure of definition and design of a process for the continuity care unit to improve the attention to the patient and his/her ecosystem providing a novel alternative to the conventional methods. This work was done under the framework of the MiniQ project, funded by EIT Health to improve the management of poly-medicated patients.

We aim to design a modular system that provides self-management of chronic diseases in a Smart Home. The modularity is defined on a per-disease basis with distinctive requirements for each disease model: a set of specifications to describe a disease and a combination of technologies that support them in the Smart Home. In this paper we focus on a use-case related to a patient with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) living in a smart environment. The proposed solution will provide monitoring of physical exercise through sensors and video, as well as deliver timely feedback about their execution, performance and also environmental conditions that could have an impact on user’s health.

The fruitful adoption of technology is winding up progressively critical to practical autonomy and independence of elderly people with dementia. A superior comprehension of the technological boundaries and the necessities of cognitively impaired individuals will help the researchers to yield more suitable interventions and will prompt the avoidance of institutionalisation. The purpose of this study is to perceive those technological barriers and needs of people suffering from dementia. A methodology based on a combination of guided questionnaires and experiments with two technological devices, tablet and virtual reality head-mounted display (VR HMD), was applied. Data were collected through individual structured interviews that occurred in a care centre in Athens. Their unfamiliarity with the technology might be the major factor that prevents its utilisation. The positive results of the technological experiment suggest that the technology adoption could be feasible once the benefits are known.

Dementia is a progressive degenerative brain syndrome that involves memory impairment in older adults caused by damage to brain cells and their connections. One promising tool that has raised from the non pharmacological interventions and is currently being researched and adopted by the researchers for the treatment of cognitive deficits is Virtual Reality (VR). This paper presents a research project related to VR solutions for people with cognitive impairments, its objectives, plan, and scientific contributions.

Within the framework of the H2020 IN LIFE project we have designed and developed two ICT services related to independent living and travel that support home activities, communication, mobility and socialization. A brief overview of the Spanish pilot, in which these solutions will be tested, is presented describing the inclusion and exclusion criteria, use cases, actors, as well as the services that will be tested. The manuscript also presents the description of functionalities and characteristics of the developed ICT services.

New technologies offer several opportunities for people with disabilities, such as the acquisition of new skills in using innovative assistive technologies, the raise of their employability and the increase in their levels of social integration. The impact that accessible information and communication technologies (ICT) could have on the lives of people with disabilities is mainly centred on facilitating their everyday activities and job opportunities (in the mainstream labour market) and providing support on a daily basis, whether it is to access their phone, mobile or computer or even the TV. However, while for most of the existing devices an accessible choice is available, accessibility was never the main focus during the development phase of those products. Their accessibility features are more an add-on than a really embedded feature. Clearly, there is a need to make assistive technologies widely available to a large group of citizens, but the fact is that there is no significant generalised accessibility support. The 3rd generation of accessible ICT applications, tools and systems constitutes a main bridge for facilitating universal access to ICT through embedding accessibility support in the core of web, desktop and mobile environments. The exploitation of these technologies, behind the recent expansion of accessibility tools and standardisation methodologies, provides a new approach for generalised access to mainstream ICT and contributes towards better accessibility for all citizens in all context of use, empowering individuals to fully participate in the knowledge society. This special issue comes after the successful finalisation of two European research projects: AEGIS (Open Accessibility Everywhere: Groundwork, Infrastructure, Standards; http://www.aegis-project.eu), and ACCESSIBLE (Accessibility Assessment Simulation Environment for New Applications Design and Development; http:// www.accessible-eu.org/), both partially funded under the EU 7th Framework Programme. This UAIS special issue is focused on research work related to the design, development, evaluation and use of new ICT applications, tools and systems that integrate support for accessibility into every aspect of ICT in order to enhance the quality of life and personal autonomy of all citizens. As a result, seven (7) papers describing methodologies, systems, case studies and evaluations from the universal access area comprise this special issue. Heiko Desruelle, Simon Isenberg, Andreas Botsikas, Paolo Vergori and Frank Gielen’s ‘‘Accessible user interface support for multi-device ubiquitous applications. Architectural modifiability considerations’’ presents the core architectural modifiability considerations for designing a multidevice ubiquitous platform for accessible web-based applications using the Webinos platform. Five proof-of-concept application scenarios were selected to demonstrate the potential impact. The five applications were evaluated in different focus groups usingLikert questions. The input of 41 participants from across Europe was collected, confirming people’s need for accessible human computer interaction within the ubiquitous computing domain. In their paper, ‘‘Towards Standardization of User Models for Simulation and Adaptation Purposes’’, Kaklanis N. et al., present the efforts of the VUMS cluster of projects towards the development of an interoperable user model, able to describe both able-bodied and people with various kinds of disabilities. The results show the definition of VUMS Exchange Format, a common format for the definition of user models. M. F. This paper describes the OASIS Health monitoring system, a personalized e-health solution specifically designed for the elderly population in the context of OASIS EU funded project, with the objective to empower the elderly so that they meet their social, emotional and psychological needs, take care for their long-term condition, and prevent further illnesses or accidents. The system integrates four main areas that cover the main aspects of interest related to the health management of the users at their own homes: electronic health record personalization, remote health monitoring, education & coaching, and alerting & assistance.

Mobile phones are becoming increasingly popular and are already the first access technology to information and communication. However, people with disabilities have to face a lot of barriers when using this kind of technology. This paper presents an Accessible Contact Manager and a Real Time Text application, designed to be used by all users with disabilities. Both applications are focused to improve accessibility of mobile phones.

The apparition of new mobile phones operating systems often leads to a flood of mobile applications rushing into the market without taking into account needs of the most vulnerable users groups: the people with disabilities. The need of accessible applications for mobile is very important especially when it comes to access basic mobile functions such as making calls through a contact manager. This paper presents the technical validation process and results of an Accessible Contact Manager for mobile phones as a part of the evaluation of accessible applications for mobile phones for people with disabilities.

Whenever an emergency situation occurs, a correct response of the rescue teams and an optimal communication and coordination among them is required to assure that all the people needing help are assisted within a short period of time. This paper presents an approach for the development of innovative HMIs within SAVE ME project to save the lives of travellers and rescuers, giving particular emphasis to the most vulnerable people. The emergency response system detects natural and man-made disaster events in public transport terminals/vehicles and critical infrastructures and supports quick and optimal mass evacuation guidance.

During the last decades the life expectancy has increased dramatically bringing about an ageing population. Additionally, elderly from some areas of Europe experience geographic and social isolation, which lead to growth of risk conditions. The usage of the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) to prevent and manage risk situations linked with age related health problems is oriented towards the development of helpful and non-invasive systems. Within this field, the REMOTE project aims at becoming a reference point in the deployment of predictive and self-taught platforms. By acquisition of context and health data the system will have enough information to perform several daily life supporting tasks without user’s interaction.

During the last years, the EU population is experiencing an increasing aging process. This tendency is motivating the emergence of new needs and the appearance of diverse services and applications oriented improve the quality of life of senior citizens. The creation of such services requires the use of technological advances and design techniques specifically focused on addressing elderly requirements. This paper presents the adaptative user interfaces that have been developed in the context of an EU funded project, PERSONA, aiming to provide different services to promote independent aging.

During the last years a transition from desktop computers and fixed phones to nomad devices such as mobile phones, palmtops and mobile Personal Computers has been experienced. Their market penetration is continuously increasing, mainly because they offer to their users the possibility to stay connected with their near ones and with the world whenever and wherever possible. The technological development of the aforementioned nomad devices provides not only the chance but the need to explore these systems in order to provide computer-based interactive applications and services accessible to the broadest possible population. At the same time, this development must also cope with diversity of the end users, the access media and devices, as well as in the contexts of use. The adaptation of nomad devices, applications and services, for the benefit of people with disability and of the elderly is especially challenging. This is because it requires a revision of the traditionally prevailing Human Computer Interaction (HCI) assumptions, such as that of designing for a non-disabled user in a desktop environment. ASK-IT1 (Ambient Intelligence Systems of Agents for Knowledge Based and Integrated Services for Mobility Impaired People) is a European Integrated Project (IST-2003-511298) within the IST 6th Framework Program in the e-Inclusion area. The driving vision behind the project is to develop services based on Ambient Intelligence (AmI) and Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) that allow mobility impaired people to move independently, live a quality life, and as a result, establish and secure economic and social inclusion. These services include the provision of relevant and real-time information, primarily for travelling, but also for use at home and at work. Nomad devices allow content access at any time, at any place, and across multiple networks. These devices combined with the ASK-IT platform aim at covering a wide range of the mobility impaired users personal needs (Gardner, 2006). ASK-IT provides applications and services in five main areas: (i) transportation, tourism and leisure; (ii) personal support; (iii) work; (iv) business and education support; and (v) social relations and community building (ASK-IT, 2004).

This paper describes the health emergency module (HEM) of ASK-IT, a European project, co-funded by the EC 6th Framework Program, within the e-Inclusion area. It identifies the functionalities and specifications of the HEM, as well as its scenarios of application, its requirements derived from the technical and legal analysis and how it interacts with other ASK-IT modules and the whole platform. Special emphasis is given to the User Interface designed, according to the specific user groups' functional characteristics.

This chapter presents a new approach for the management of prehospital health emergencies: the integration of telemedicine services into an EMS community as a mean of improving the quality of care, accessibility, and cost-effectiveness. A reference architecture is specified based on a set of services that support the development of integrated prehospital health emergency management systems according to a proposed model. The experimental work has been carried out with the collaboration of emergency medical services in Madrid that contributed to the initial design, the service provision, and the evaluation of the results. The evaluation of the proposed study cases has allowed determining the influence of the telemedicine services in the scenario of prehospital health emergency management. In the Information Society, medical information is dispersed and untrustworthy or the reliable medical information is not free, because it is required to pay a subscription. Generally, teachers, professors and trainers who are responsible for teaching medical skills, use traditional learning techniques which are not based in Communication and Information Technologies. This paper presents an accessible educational framework that is being elaborated, based on the principles of evidence-based medicine, relying on real life scenarios and using Virtual Reality technologies through the Internet.

In the past years, there has been a flourishing of platforms dedicated to Active Assisted Living (AAL) and Active and Healthy Ageing (AHA). Most of them feature as their core elements intelligent systems for the analysis of multisource and multimodal data coming from sensors of various nature inserted in suitable IoT ecosystems. While progress in signal processing and artificial intelligence has shown how these platforms may have a great potential in improving the daylife of seniors or frail subjects, there are still several technological and non-technological barriers that should be torn down before full uptake of the existing solutions. In this paper, we address specifically this issue describing the outcome and creation process of a methodology aimed at evaluating the successful uptake of existing platforms in the field of AHA. We propose a pathway (as part of an overarching methodology) to define and select for Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), taking into account an extensive amount of parameters related to success, uptake and evolution of platforms. For this, we contribute a detailed analysis structured along with the 4 main actions of mapping, observing, understanding, and defining. Our analysis focuses on Platforms, defined as operating environments, under which various applications, agents and intelligent services are designed, implemented, tested, released and maintained. By following the proposed pathway, we were able to define a practical and effective methodology for monitoring and evaluating the uptake and other success indicators of AHA platforms. Besides, by the same token, we were able to provide guidelines and best practices for the development of the next-generation platforms in the AHA domain.

It has been divided into three levels: BAN (body area network), LAN (local area network) and WAN (wide area network), and it uses wireless communications at all levels of the architecture.

Behavioral monitoring tools can be proven to be especially helpful for aging workers for whom it is of paramount importance to avoid sedentary lifestyle, decreasing the possibility to exhibit musculoskeletal, cardiovascular and other health/mental related problems, which could impede their workability and job performance. Towards this direction, we have developed an unobtrusive pervasive health monitoring framework, enabling activity and location tracking, as well as self-reporting. The collected data is used to provide meaningful health-related suggestions through a life-like Virtual Coach aiming to encourage the engagement of workers with healthy lifestyle and behaviors. In this paper, we present the design and functionality of the solution, which was implemented as a mobile app accompanied with a dashboard for data overview, and demonstrate the results of its acceptance through a conducted survey. Survey participants were asked to answer questions related to their work experience, frequency of use of technology and type of applications used, well-being and satisfaction at work as well as their data privacy concerns. Finally, the participants also answered questions about the level of acceptance of the system and the perceived usefulness. Within the survey, video demonstrations and images were included, so that the participants have the chance to receive a better understanding of solution functionality. The acceptability study was conducted with the participation of 52 people, from which 90.4% reported that they found the Virtual Coach recommendations useful, while 84.6% reported intention of using the proposed solution in their daily life. The results indicate the virtue of such tools in promoting worker well-being.

Head and neck cancer is the seventh most common cancer worldwide. The incidence of this cancer is increasing, but at the same time, the cancer-related mortality rate has decreased over time, leaving more head and neck cancer survivors. More emphasis is needed on quality-of-life research in the head and neck cancer field to improve their daily lives and reduce the disease and treatment response burden. To achieve this, we conducted a scoping review to find and learn which predictors and data analysis techniques have been used in previous studies. This work is undertaken in the context of the BD4QoL EU Research project.
