Non-transferrin-bound iron (NTBI) is a group of circulating toxic iron forms, which occur in iron overload or health conditions with dysregulation of iron metabolism. NTBI is responsible for increased oxidative stress and tissue iron loading. Despite its relevance as a biochemical marker in several diseases, a standardized assay is still lacking. Several methods were developed to quantify NTBI, but results show high inter-method and even inter-laboratory variability. Thus, the development of a consistent NTBI assay is a major goal in the management of iron overload and related clinical conditions. In this work, a micro sequential injection lab-on-valve (μSI-LOV) method in a solid phase spectrophotometry (SPS) mode was developed for the quantification of NTBI, using a bidentate 3,4–hydroxypyridinone (3,4-HPO) ligand anchored to sepharose beads as a chromogenic reagent. To attain SPS, the functionalized beads were packed into a column in the flow cell, and the analyte, NTBI retained as iron (III), formed a colored complex at the beads while eliminating the sample matrix. The dynamic concentration range was 1.62–7.16 μmol L−1 of iron (III), with a limit of detection of 0.49 μmol L−1 and a limit of quantification of 1.62 μmol L−1. The proposed μSI-LOV-SPS method is a contribution to the development of an automatic method for the quantification of the NTBI in serum samples.

Este artículo examina la introducción del ferrocarril agrícola portátil francés Decauville, como parte de la modernización tecnológica en haciendas mexicanas productoras de henequén y pulque. Previas investigaciones se han centrado en los resultados de las actividades productivas, sin examinar esta tecnología que deriva de una innovación local al sistema del ferrocarril, cuya simplicidad y costo accesible fueron determinantes para su adopción en el sector agrícola. La pregunta que nos planteamos es: ¿qué características de esta tecnología contribuyeron a reforzar la especialización productiva en el henequén y el pulque? El trabajo propone que su creativa apropiación y adaptación local, le otorgó significativas ventajas a la cadena de producción-distribución en ambos cultivos. En la investigación se han empleado fuentes diversas, tales como memorias e informes gubernamentales, periódicos, anuarios estadísticos, boletines y catálogos de venta de este equipo ferroviario.

The aim of this work was to develop a sequential injection (SI) method for the determination of the micronutrients iron and manganese, in soil leachates, as a tool to assess potential groundwater contamination. The described sequential injection method was based on the reaction of iron with chelator MRB12, a greener alternative chromogenic reagent, and the reaction of manganese with zincon, within a single manifold. The developed SI method enabled the determination of iron in the range 0.10-1.00 mg L-1, and manganese in the range 0.25-2.5 mg L-1 with a limit of detection of 0.08 mg L-1 for iron and 0.24 mg L-1 for manganese. The determination of both parameters was made in 6 minutes, in triplicate. The application to monitor laboratory scale soil core columns (LSSCs), as a simulation of the soil leaching process, proved its efficiency to assess potential contamination of ground waters. Iron and manganese contents were effectively analysed in two different scenarios to mimic the leaching process with rainwater and fertilizer.

Chlorins are highly interesting compounds due to their spectroscopic properties in both UV-Vis and NIR regions. Upon coordination to a metal ion, the corresponding metallochlorins exhibit more valuable physicochemical properties that enable a broader range of applications, such as in photodynamic therapy (PDT), water splitting catalysis, optical sensor devices and dye-sensitized solar cells. Synthetic chemistry has been in a continuous quest to fulfil most green chemistry requirements through the development of efficient reactions. Being a heating process that does not depend on heat transfer to the reaction medium, ohmic heating accomplishes the mentioned requirements and allows a fast and uniform heating regime thanks to the ionic conductivity of the reaction medium. Herein, we report the metallation of pyrrolidine- and isoxazolidine-fused chlorins with Zn(II), Cu(II) and Pd(II) salts by ohmic heating, using non-toxic aqueous solutions, and their corresponding physico-chemical characterization. All pyrrolidine-fused chlorins showed higher yields, when compared with isoxazolidine ones. From the thermogravimetric analysis performed it is possible to infer that the metal enhances the steadiness of the macrocycle, making it easier to cause the thermal decomposition of the pyrrolidine- and isoxazolidine-fused chlorins. The Zn(II) complexes showed high absorption in the NIR spectral region, a low fluorescence quantum yield and a short excited singlet state, which indicate the high efficiency of intersystem crossing to the triplet state, making them very promising candidates as photosensitizers for PDT.

Xanthone derivatives have a dibenzo-y-pyrone scaffold which has gained great interest in Medicinal Chemistry due to their diverse biological activities. Usually, its synthesis requires multi-step synthetic routes using harsh conditions and high catalyst loadings. In this communication, we report for the first time a one-pot synthesis of the xanthone scaffold based on a carbonylative Suzuki coupling. Iodophenol and (2-methoxyphenyl)boronic acid were coupled under carbon monoxide, generated from a carbon monoxide surrogate. An experimental data-based model was built to guide the reaction optimization. The optimized conditions were 1 mol% of a pincer complex as palladium catalyst, 5 equivalents of K2CO3 as base, and DMF:water (7 : 3) as solvent. The robustness of the synthetic method, namely in terms of the reactants scope, was also evaluated. This approach provided the xanthone scaffold in high yields and provided a deep insight into the carbonylative Suzuki couplings.

Indomethacin is a potent non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) with a strong selective inhibitor activity towards cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), an enzyme that is highly overexpressed in various tumour cells, being involved in tumourigenesis. Concomitantly, porphyrins have gained much attention as promising photosensitizers (PSs) for the non-invasive photodynamic therapy (PDT) of cancer. Herein, we report the design, and determine the singlet oxygen generation capacity and in vitro cellular toxicity of porphyrin- and chlorin-indomethacin conjugates (P2-Ind and C2-Ind). Both the conjugates were obtained in high yields and were characterized by 1H, 19F and 13C NMR as well as by high resolution mass spectrometry. The singlet oxygen generation properties were assessed by the 1,3-diphenylisobenzofuran singlet oxygen trap method, which showed that C2 and C2-Ind are the best singlet oxygen photosensitizers. In addition, it was found that the presence of indomethacin did not influence the singlet oxygen generation of porphyrin or chlorin. Cytotoxicity studies of the conjugate in human HEp2 cells revealed that the porphyrin- and chlorin-indomethacin conjugates have similar dark cytotoxicities, while chlorin C2 was shown to be the most phototoxic. Despite having lower cellular uptake than C2-Ind after 24 hours, chlorin C2 had a broad localization in HEp2 cells while the chlorin-indomethacin conjugate C2-Ind could be detected in the form of small aggregates. DFT calculations were performed to shed light on the reaction energy involved in the formation of the indomethacin conjugates and to compare the relative stability of selected isomers in solution. Moreover, the calculated energy of their first excited triplet state structures confirmed their use as suitable photosensitizers to generate singlet oxygen for PDT.

Contamination of ground water as a consequence of soil leaching processes is an issue of major concern. In this context, a simulation of the soil leaching process was designed. A sequential injection (SI) method to monitor the soil leaching of iron complexes with in-line rain simulation for leachate production is described. The developed methodology comprises the SI determination of both iron(III) and 3-hydroxy-4-pyridinones iron(III) complexes, coupled to a mini soil column (mSC) for displaying in-line rain simulations. The described SI method enabled iron(III) determination within the range 2.0–35 μmol L−1, with a detection limit of 0.42 μmol L−1, and determination of iron(III) complexes in the range 1.0–45 μmol L−1. It was successfully applied to leachates from laboratory scale soil columns (LSSC), with good precision for both iron(III) and iron complexes determinations: calculated relative standard deviation (RSD) of 5% and 6%, respectively. A step further in automation and miniaturization was attained with the incorporation of a mini soil column for the in-line leachate production. The system enabled the soil leachate production and assessment in less than 5 min, including determinations in triplicate.

Functional organic dyes play a key role in many fields, namely in biotechnology and medical diagnosis. Herein, we report two novel 2,3- and 3,4-dihydroxyphenyl substituted rosamines (3 and 4, respectively) that were successfully synthesized through a microwave-assisted protocol. The best reaction yields were obtained for rosamine 4, which also showed the most interesting photophysical properties, specially toward biogenic amines (BAs). Several amines including n- and t-butylamine, cadaverine, and putrescine cause spectral changes of 4, in UV–Vis and fluorescence spectra, which are indicative of their potential application as an effective tool to detect amines in acetonitrile solutions. In the gas phase, the probe response is more expressive for spermine and putrescine. Additionally, we found that methanolic solutions of rosamine 4 and n-butylamine undergo a pink to yellow color change over time, which has been attributed to the formation of a new compound. The latter was isolated and identified as 5 (9−aminopyronin), whose solutions exhibit a remarkable increase in fluorescence intensity together with a shift toward more energetic wavelengths. In the present study we investigated the in vitro hepatotoxicity of a set of rhodamine-labelled 3-hydroxy-4-pyridinones (3,4-HPO) that had previously demonstrated significant inhibitory effect in the intramacrophagic growth of Mycobacterium avium. Our aim was to establish a correspondence between the molecular structure and the in vitro toxicological activity of these compounds. The impact of a set of bidentate (MRB2, MRB7, MRB8, and MRB9) and hexadentate (MRH7, MRH8, and MRH10) chelators on cellular metabolic competence and membrane integrity was investigated in HepG2 cells. Our findings indicate that: a) hexadentate chelators are more cytotoxic than parent bidentate ligands; b) disruption of cell membrane and metabolic competence only occurred after 5 days, at the highest concentrations tested; c) strict correlation between bacteriostatic activity and in vitro toxicity was observed, which seems to be directly dependent on the size of the molecule and on the hydrophilic/lipophilic balance; d) among the set of bidentate ligands, carboxyrhodamine derivatives (amide linker) presented lower detrimental effects, when compared with rhodamine B isothiocyanate chelators (thiourea linker); e) contrarily, for the hexadentate series, rhodamine B isothiocyanate derivatives are less cytotoxic to HepG2 cells than carboxyrhodamine molecules; and f) for all compounds tested, when the substituents of the nitrogen atom were switched from ethyl to methyl, an increment of toxicity was observed. Overall, all chelators seem to display suitable in vitro toxicological potential to combat fast grow bacteria. According to their in vitro pharmacological: toxicological potential ratio, MRH7 and MRH8 may be considered as the most suitable compounds to undergo further pre-clinical development studies.

The present research reports the efficient synthesis of mono- and di-(aminophenyl)porphyrins and their metalation with Zn(II) using microwave irradiation. The subsequent reaction of amino-functionalized porphyrins with siloxane moieties bearing epoxy or carboxyl functional groups provided four new porphyrin-modified siloxanes. The structure of the resulting derivatives was established by 1H-NMR and MALDI-TOF-MS. The optical properties of the porphyrin chromophores were preserved, as proven by comparing the absorption and emission spectra of the initial porphyrins to those of the porphyrin-modified siloxanes.

Depigmenting properties of tyrosinase inhibitors (TAi) boosted the search for new compounds applicable in cosmetics. Kojic acid, a 3-hydroxy-4-pyrone, is the most studied tyrosinase inhibitor but undesirable side effects, like dermatitis, and unspecified mechanism led to its exclusion in several countries. To discover safer and more efficient TA, we evaluated tyrosinase inhibitory effect of twelve 3-hydroxy-4-pyridinones (3,4-HPO) in vitro and considering the two reaction steps of inhibition in mushroom tyrosinase enzyme. In parallel we performed molecular docking studies in human and mushroom enzymes. Ligands I6 and I11 were the most effective compounds considering their inhibitory activity in both reaction steps. Our studies revealed that I6 has a non-competitive and mixed type of inhibition for monophenolase and diphenolase activity, while ligand I11 showed a mixed and competitive inhibition type for each reaction step. RESUMO Este estudo avaliou as propriedades físico-químicas envolvidas no processo de adsorção para subsidiar o potencial uso de biocarvão produzido com folhas secas de amendoeira-da-praia, Terminalia catappa, como remediador em águas contaminadas com metais. O biocarvão utilizado foi produzido por conversão à baixa temperatura e caracterizado por apresentar bandas de O-H, CH2, C-O e C-O-C; teores de 48,8% de carbono, 46,6% de oxigênio, 3,3% de hidrogênio e demais entre enxofre e nitrogênio; presença de macroporos e passado em peneira (100 mesh). Para o estudo, preparou-se um coquetel de radiotraçadores (Co-57, Mn-54 e Zn-65), que foi adicionado à água deionizada e massas de biocarvão com o objetivo de obter parâmetros tais como pH, tempo de equilíbrio e capacidade de adsorção por meio das isotermas de Langmuir e Freundlich. O detector de Germânio Hiperpuro foi utilizado para quantificar as atividades dos radiotraçadores por meio da técnica de espectroscopia gama para geração e tratamento de dados. Os resultados obtidos mostraram aumento na adsorção do pH 3,8 em diante e tempo de equilíbrio de 30 minutos ou mais. As isotermas de Langmuir e Freundlich construídas apresentaram bons ajustes, com valores de n maiores que 1, indicando preferência dos metais pelo material adsorvente. Além disso, levando-se em conta a competição pelos sítios ativos e a concentração inicial das soluções (ordem de picogramas), foram encontradas capacidades de adsorção de 1,273 ng.g-1 para o Zn-65, de 3.271 ng.g-1 para o Co-57 e de 9,026 ng.g-1 para o Mn-54. ABSTRACT This study evaluated the physical-chemical properties of the adsorption process in biochar produced from dry leaves of beach-almond, Terminalia catappa, as a useful tool for remediation purposes in water contaminated with metals. The biochar was characterized by having: bands of O-H, CH2, C-O, and C-O-C; contents of 48.8% carbon, 46.6% oxygen, 3.3% hydrogen and the others between sulfur and nitrogen; the presence of macropores; and being sieved (100 mesh). Parameters such as pH, equilibrium time and adsorption capacity by the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms were determined from experiments using a radiotracer cocktail (Co-57, Mn-54 and Zn-65) which was added to deionized water and a constants mass of biochar. The high-purity germanium detector (HPGe) was used to quantify the radiotracer activity by gamma spectroscopy. The results showed better adsorption from pH 3.8 and 30 minutes equilibrium time. The Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms had a good model fit, with n values higher than 1, and showed affinity between the metals and the biochar. The adsorption capacities of Zn-65, Co-57 and Mn-54 were 1.273 ng.g−1, 3.271 ng.g−1 and 9.026 ng.g−1, respectively.

The application of synthetic Fe-chelates is one of the most commonly used strategies in IDC amendment, despite their associated negative environmental impacts. In a previous work, the Fe-chelate tris(3-hydroxy-1-(H)-2-methyl-4-pyridinonate) iron(III) [Fe(mpp)3 ] has shown great potential for alleviating IDC in soybean (Glycine max) in the early stages of plant development under hydroponic conditions. Herein, its efficacy was verified under soil conditions in soybean grown from seed to full maturity. Chlorophyll levels, plant growth, root and shoot mineral accumulation (K, Mg, Ca, Na, P, Mn, Zn, Ni, and Co) and FERRITIN expression were accessed at V5 phenological stage. Compared to a commonly used Fe chelate, FeEDDHA, supplementation with [Fe(mpp)3 ] led to a 29% higher relative chlorophyll content, 32% higher root biomass, 36% higher trifoliate Fe concentration, and a twofold increase in leaf FERRITIN gene expression. [Fe(mpp)3 ] supplementation also resulted in increased accumulation of P, K, Zn, and Co. At full maturity, the remaining plants were harvested and [Fe(mpp)3 ] application led to a 32% seed yield increase when compared to FeEDDHA. This is the first report on the use of [Fe(mpp)3 ] under alkaline soil conditions for IDC correction, and we show that its foliar application has a longer-lasting effect than FeEDDHA, induces efficient root responses, and promotes the uptake of other nutrients.

This article reports on the development and validation of a disposable microfluidic paper-based analytical device (μPAD) for on-hand, in-situ, and cheap Fe(III) determination in natural waters complying with World Health Organization guidelines. The developed μPAD used 3-hydroxy-4-pyridinone (3,4-HPO) as a colour reagent due to its considerably lower toxicity than traditionally used iron analytical reagents. It was selected among a group of hydrophilic 3,4-HPO chelators containing ether-derived chains in their structure which were prepared using green methods. The relatively high water solubility of these chelators improved the detection limit and applicability as μPAD reagents. Under optimal conditions, the μPAD is characterised by a quantification range between 0.25 and 2.0 mg/L, a detection limit of 55 μg/L and 15 min of analysis time. The signal stability extends up to 4 h and the device is stable for at least one month. The reagent consumption is below 0.2 mg per analysis and the μPAD method was validated by analysis certified reference materials and by comparison with atomic absorption results (RD < 10%). The newly developed μPAD was successfully applied to the determination of iron in river, well and tap waters with no need of any prior sample pre-treatment.

The interdisciplinary approach taken was the key to producing extracts that had been prepared following medieval instructions, and shows the blue/purple chromophore as the major dye in Chrozophora tinctoria fruits (shell). A multi-analytical characterization of its structure was made using HPLC-DAD-MS, GC-MS, NMR (1H, 13C, COSY, HSQC, HMBC, INADEQUATE), and computational studies. The results demonstrate that the blue compound corresponds to 6'-hydroxy-4,4'-dimethoxy-1,1'-dimethyl-5'-{[3,4,5-trihydroxy-6-(hydroxymethyl)tetrahydro-2H-pyran-2-yl] oxy}-[3,3'-bipyridine]-2,2',5,6(1H,1'H)-tetraone, a hermidin derivative, which we named chrozophoridin. Experimental data and computational modeling studies show that this mono-glycosylated dimer is represented by two stable isomers (atropisomers). This is an indispensable piece of knowledge for the characterization of this medieval dye in works of art such as medieval manuscript illuminations and for testing its stability and contributes to the preservation of our cultural heritage. publishersversion published

In healthy individuals, virtually all blood plasma iron is bound by transferrin. However, in several diseases and clinical conditions, hazardous non-transferrin-bound iron (NTBI) species occur. NTBI represents a potentially toxic iron form, being a direct cause of oxidative stress in the circulating compartment and tissue iron loading. The accumulation of these species can cause cellular damage in several organs, namely, the liver, spleen, and heart. Despite its pathophysiological relevance, the chemical nature of NTBI remains elusive. This has precluded its use as a clinical biochemical marker and the development of targeted therapies. Herein, we make a critical assessment of the current knowledge of NTBI speciation. The currently accepted hypotheses suggest that NTBI is mostly iron bound to citric acid and iron bound to serum albumin, but the chemistry of this system remains fuzzy. We explore the complex chemistry of iron complexation by citric acid and its implications towards NTBI reactivity. Further, the ability of albumin to bind iron is revised and the role of protein post-translational modifications on iron binding is discussed. The characterization of the NTBI species structure may be the starting point for the development of a standardized analytical assay, the better understanding of these species’ reactivity or the identification of NTBI uptake mechanisms by different cell types, and finally, to the development of new therapies.

In the sequence of the work in which we identified functional groups of rhodamine labeled 3,4-HPO chelators that are crucial for their activity against Mycobacterium avium infection we now scrutinize if the same groups are also relevant for the chelators antibacterial activity against Gram (+/−) bacteria. In this new infection scenario, we confirmed that a thiourea linkage and N-ethyl substituents on the xanthene ring are important and there is an advantage of the association of both groups in the molecular framework. In particular, we found that three hexadentate chelators (MRH7, MRH8, and MRH10) inhibit bacterial growth of Staphylococcus (S). aureus ATCC 25923 and S. epidermis ATCC 12228 and one hexadentate chelator (MRH7) also inhibits the growth of Escherichia (E.) coli ATCC 25922.

Transferrin (Tf) is an essential protein, probably ubiquitous to all metazoans. The main function of this family of proteins is to bind and transport ferric ions, increasing Fe(III) solubility under physiological conditions and preventing its deleterious pro-oxidant role in aerobic environments. In humans, Tf is responsible for the safe transport of this essential micronutrient through circulation and its delivery to requiring cells. Cellular uptake occurs through endocytosis mediated by the transferrin receptor (TfR). Although there is a good understanding of the general molecular mechanisms governing Tf iron binding and cellular iron delivery, several aspects of Tf biochemistry remain unclear. In this review, we provide an overview of the inorganic biochemistry of human Tf (hTf), exploring the available structural information on hTf and the hTf/TfR complex to discuss physiologically relevant aspects, such as iron binding site distribution, mechanism of iron loading and TfR priming of iron release in vivo. In addition, we consider the role of hTf microheterogeneity on its function. Post-translational modifications such as phosphorylation, glycation and oxidation may occur at relevant hTf sites, which will compromise iron binding, inter lobe cooperativity or interaction with the TfR. Furthermore, these modifications may contribute to the deregulation of systemic iron transport and distribution on a disease specific manner. Finally, a brief review of the role of hTf as one of the main blood serum ligands for toxic and therapeutic metal ions is presented. hTf is a long known and studied protein, but it is essential to understand the factors governing its expression and catabolism and how specific modifications modulate its function, in order to fully comprehend its role in human pathology or to explore its potential as a therapeutic agent.

We describe the synthesis and characterization of a new N-methylpyrrolidine-fused meso-tetracarboxyphenylchlorin with highly emissive features. The synthetic approach to obtain the fluorescent chlorin involves the microwave-assisted synthesis of meso-tetrakis (4-methoxycarbonylphenyl)porphyrin, followed by a 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction of this porphyrin with azomethine ylide and, finally, ester hydrolysis under basic conditions. The incorporation and anchoring of the chlorin to a nanostructured porous TiO2 matrix is achieved and optimized for its use as a fluorescent sensor. In particular, we found an efficient detection of the explosive triacetone triperoxide (TATP) in the gas phase. The optical response after analyte exposure is selective and fast, with response time t50 values of less than 10 min under exposure to TATP saturated vapours.

We report EPR and 51V NMR characterization of vanadium(IV/V) species originating from bis(3-hydroxy-4-pyridinonato)oxidovanadium(IV) complexes in aqueous solution at pH 7.4, under aerobic conditions and along time. Since complexes possess variable hydrophilic/lipophilic balance and consequently different solubilities in water we also performed a parallel study in POPC liposome suspensions. For less soluble complexes we used DMSO as a co-solvent. We identified three groups of complexes with different solubilities in water. Compounds 1 and 2 are soluble enough to produce 1.5 mM solutions in MOPS buffer. Compounds 3 and 4 exhibit intermediate solubility but studies in MOPS buffer and POPC liposomes demonstrate that solubilisation is considerably enhanced in liposome suspensions. Compounds 5 and 6 exhibit low water solubility, which is not sufficiently enhanced in liposome suspensions thus constraining the use of DMSO as a co-solvent. Analysis of the EPR spectra of bis(3-hydroxy-4-pyridinonato)oxidovanadium(IV) complexes shows that upon dissolution a single species is present in solution, [VOL2]. In the presence of air [VOL2] is oxidized to three species, [VO2L2]−, [VO2L] and V1 (H2VO4−) as characterized by the 51V NMR spectra. Addition of sodium ascorbate reduces the V(V) species to the original [VOL2] complex. The results demonstrate that the use of DMSO lowers the rate of oxidation of the [VOL2] complex. For DMSO percentages higher than 10% two distinct EPR signals are observable and EPR spin-Hamiltonian parameters confirm the presence of [VOL2] in two different solvation environments, which confirms the participation of DMSO in the first solvation sphere of the complex.

The introduction of a carboxylate function into porphyrins allows a variety of modifications, including coordination and conjugation, which are central to enhance the efficiency of macrocycles in photonic materials and biological applications. Herein, a synthetic strategy to obtain 5-(4′-carboxyphenyl)-10,15,20-tris(pentafluorophenyl)porphyrin and its pyrrolidine-fused chlorin derivative was developed by the 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of a carbomethoxyphenyl substituted porphyrin with an azomethine ylide, followed by hydrolysis under thermal acidic conditions. The 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of the carbomethoxyphenyl porphyrin with N-methyl nitrone was also performed to give an isomeric mixture of isoxazolidine-fused chlorins, revealing lower selectivity and lower yields; in addition, retrocycloaddition of the isoxazolidine-fused chlorins was observed under the hydrolysis conditions. The resulting carboxyphenyl macrocycles were characterized using 1H and 19F NMR, ESI-MS and SC-XRD for 5-(4′-carboxyphenyl)-10,15,20-tris(pentafluorophenyl)porphyrin. In order to study the influence of coordination to a metal ion on the electronic properties of carboxyphenyl substituted porphyrins, a series of metal complexes of 5-(4′-carboxyphenyl)-10,15,20-tris(pentafluorophenyl)porphyrin and its pyrrolidine-fused chlorin derivative were synthesized by microwave-mediated metallation with Fe(III), Cu(II) and Zn(II) salts. EPR spectroscopy was particularly relevant to the characterization of the Cu(II) complexes of both macrocycles and to study the coordination chemistry of these ligands with Cu(II) ions.
