Streams generally are affected by multiple stressors acting at different timescales. Periphyton, often the most important primary producer in these ecosystems, may respond to short-term impacts as well as to different long-term environmental conditions with potentially various changes in community structure. Here, we experimentally investigated the effects of sudden flow pulses on periphyton communities as a way to mimic extreme precipitation events in lowland streams that are predicted to occur more often with climate change in some regions. Using outdoor flumes, we allowed periphyton to colonise nutrient-diffusion substrates under two light conditions (50% shade and fully open) and nutrient availabilities (control, with access only to stream nutrients, and N–P-enriched) along a gradient in baseflows (0.43 to 2.17 L/s). After one month, we exposed the communities to a flow pulse (two-fold peak flow increase to simulate conditions of a potentially high disturbance) and analysed the responses of biomass and taxonomic composition. Flow pulse promoted periphyton growth in the lowest range of the baseflow but led to biomass reduction in the highest range. Light was the second major driver of biomass accrual, whereas nutrient enrichment had a strong effect on community composition both before and after the pulse (i.e., diatom dominance vs. green algae dominance in scenarios without and with enrichment, respectively). In all treatments, the flow pulse promoted a higher taxonomic richness, suggesting a partial reset of the succession of the periphyton communities. However, independent of flow and resources, periphyton communities showed low ecological resistance against the pulse with changes in chlorophyll a, biovolume and taxonomic richness to the pulse. We demonstrated that the effects of pulses on periphyton are similar in terms of biomass but varied strongly regarding composition depending on their initial structure, which is in turn mediated by the baseflow normally experienced by the systems, and on light and nutrient availability. Our results highlight the importance of testing multiple stressors, such as an increase in extreme events, under a wide range of environmental conditions (i.e., flow regime, trophic state, light availability). This approach allows us to detect potential interaction effects and non-linear responses, and highlights that the environmental settings ultimately determine the net effects of flow pulses on community structure and probably also on several important ecosystem processes.

Fluxes of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) in shallow lakes are strongly affected by dominant primary producers which mostly has been studied in temperate and boreal regions. We compared summer CO2 and CH4 fluxes (diffusion and ebullition) in littoral and pelagic zones of three subtropical shallow lakes with contrasting regimes: clear-vegetated, phytoplankton-turbid, and sediment-turbid, and assessed fluxes in different seasons in the clear-vegetated system. Significant differences among the lakes occurred only for CH4 fluxes. In the sediment-turbid lake we found undersaturated CH4 concentrations were below atmospheric equilibrium, implying CH4 uptake (< 0 mg m−2 day−1), likely due to low availability of organic matter. Differences between zones occurred in the clear-vegetated and phytoplankton-turbid lakes, with higher total CH4 emissions in the littoral than in the pelagic zones (mean: 4342 ± 895 and 983 ± 801 mg m−2 day−1, respectively). CO2 uptake (< < 0 mg m−2 day−1) occurred in the littoral of the phytoplankton-turbid lake (in summer), and in the pelagic of the clear-vegetated lake even in winter, likely associated with submerged macrophytes dominance. Our work highlights the key role of different primary producers regulating carbon fluxes in shallow lakes and points out that, also in the subtropics, submerged macrophyte dominance may decrease carbon emissions to the atmosphere.

Ponds occupy a large share of standing water worldwide and play an important role in providing various ecosystem services. There are concerted efforts of the European Union either to create new ponds, or to restore and preserve existing ponds as nature-based solutions to provide benefits to ecosystem and human well-being. As part of the EU PONDERFUL project, selected pondscapes (i.e. landscapes of ponds) in eight different countries – hereafter “demo-sites”, are studied to comprehensively understand their characteristics and their efficiency to provide ecosystem services. In addition, the needs and knowledge of stakeholders who own, work, research, or benefit from the pondscapes are also important, because of their capabilities to create, manage and develop the pondscapes. Therefore, we established connection with stakeholders to study their preferences and visions on the pondscapes. Using the analytic hierarchy process, this study shows that in general stakeholders in the European and Turkish demo-sites prefer environmental benefits to economic benefits, while stakeholders in the Uruguayan demo-sites rank the economic benefits higher. More specifically, in the European and Turkish demo-sites, the biodiversity benefits, i.e. life-cycle maintenance, habitat and gene pool protection, receive the highest ranking among all groups. On the other hand, stakeholders at the Uruguayan demo-sites rank provisioning benefits as the most important, because many ponds in Uruguayan demo-sites are being used for agricultural purposes. Understanding those preferences helps policy makers to address the needs of stakeholders more correctly, when considering any action or policy for the pondscapes.

To investigate the potential long-term consequences of environmental warming in subtropical systems, we compare the trophic structure of shallow lakes in tropical and subtropical regions. In total, 25 meso-eutrophic lakes with piscivorous fish were sampled during summer along a latitudinal gradient in South America. The fish catch per unit of effort and the omnivorous fish to zooplankton biomass ratios were significantly lower in the tropical lakes. Despite the lower fish biomass, no significant difference was found in zooplankton or phytoplankton communities or in the zooplankton to phytoplankton biomass ratio between the two sets of lakes. Nevertheless, regression models based on the combined dataset show higher cyanobacteria and total phytoplankton biomass at lower zooplankton to phytoplankton biomass ratio and higher omnivorous fish to zooplankton biomass ratio. Cyanobacteria biomass was dominated by non bloom-forming taxa and was inversely related to the biomass of calanoid copepods suggesting that these herbivores may play an important role in controlling edible cyanobacteria in warm shallow lakes. Overall, our results, however, suggest that warming will have relatively minor impacts on the pelagic trophic structure of shallow subtropical lakes supporting the idea of weaker trophic cascades in warm (sub)tropical lakes in comparison to temperate ones.

Body size plays a key role in the functioning of communities and ecosystems. However, this ecological trait is commonly under strong selection pressure by environmental drivers, such as temperature, nutrients, predation, and food quality. Understanding how environmental factors interact to shape the body size structure of communities is, therefore, of fundamental and applied interest. Using a unique database from 12 Neotropical lakes, we quantified the community-weighted mean trait (CWM) of zooplankton body size. We investigated how temperature, total phosphorus, abundance of predators (planktivorous fish) and food availability (abundance of edible and inedible algae) affect CWM of zooplankton body size. We also analyzed the interactions among these environmental predictors, and their cascading effects on zooplankton body size. We found that planktivorous fish, inedible algae, and edible algae had strong direct impacts on CWM of zooplankton body size. In particular, planktivorous fish and inedible algae decreased the CWM of body size, whereas edible algae increased it. Temperature and total phosphorus indirectly affected CWM of body size by increasing the abundance of planktivorous fish and inedible algae, and decreasing the abundance of edible algae. Our findings illustrate that environmental factors act in combination and affect zooplankton body size through multiple pathways. Therefore, focusing on the interaction between environmental predictors rather than just their isolated effects may provide a more mechanistic understanding of how environmental changes drive the body size structure of biotic communities.

The invasive freshwater dinoflagellate Ceratium furcoides is extending its distribution in South America with increasing environmental impacts associated with its bloom. We here report two events related to C. furcoides distribution expansion in Uruguay: (1) the main environmental drivers (physical and chemical factors, extreme wind events and zooplankton composition) of the first appearance and bloom of C. furcoides in 2012 in a subtropical eutrophic shallow lake (Lake Blanca, Uruguay); and (2) a fish kill event of Prochilodus lineatus observed during a bloom of C. furcoides in 2016 in a deep eutrophic lake (Puente de las Americas, Uruguay). The bloom of C. furcoides in Lake Blanca started in spring 2012 (December) after a clear water period with high phytoplankton species replacement after a cyanobacterial bloom of Raphidiopsis raciborskii. Extreme wind during this period may have initiated the bloom of C. furcoides by enhanced cysts resuspension from the sediments. High nutrient availability and low zooplankton grazing, further allowed C. furcoides to expand and reach over 96% of the phytoplankton biomass. In Lake Puente de las Americas, we registered the fish kill of the large-sized benthic Prochilodus lineatus during a bloom of C. furcoides. This bloom caused the oxygen depletion in the hypolimnion and the gills from these fish exhibited massive accumulations of C. furcoides cells compared to the ones collected in non-bloom conditions. Concurring to other studies our results suggest that the C. furcoides bloom likely caused the fish kill of P. lineatus by asphyxia. Our study is the earliest register of a bloom of C. furcoides in Uruguay (in 2012) and discusses the potential environmental effects of its bloom in subtropical lakes.

Shallow aquatic systems exchange large amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) with the atmosphere. The production and consumption of both gases is determined by the interplay between abiotic (such as oxygen availability) and biotic (such as community structure and trophic interactions) factors. Fish communities play a key role in driving carbon fluxes in benthic and pelagic habitats. Previous studies indicate that trophic interactions in the water column, as well as in the benthic zone can strongly affect aquatic CO2 and CH4 net emissions. However, the overall effect of fish on both pelagic and benthic processes remains largely unresolved, representing the main focus of our experimental study. We evaluated the effects of benthic and pelagic fish on zooplankton and macroinvertebrates; on CO2 and CH4 diffusion and ebullition, as well as on CH4 production and oxidation, using a full-factorial aquarium experiment. We compared five treatments: absence of fish (control); permanent presence of benthivorous fish (common carps, benthic) or zooplanktivorous fish (sticklebacks, pelagic); and intermittent presence of carps or sticklebacks. We found trophic and non-trophic effects of fish on CO2 and CH4 emissions. Intermittent presence of benthivorous fish promoted a short-term increase in CH4 ebullition, probably due to the physical disturbance of the sediment. As CH4 ebullition was the major contributor to the total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, incidental bioturbation by benthivorous fish was a key factor triggering total carbon emissions from our aquariums. Trophic effects impacted GHG dynamics in different ways in the water column and the sediment. Fish predation on zooplankton led to a top-down trophic cascade effect on methane-oxidising bacteria. This effect was, however, not strong enough as to substantially alter CH4 diffusion rates. Top-down trophic effects of zooplanktivorous and benthivorous fish on benthic macroinvertebrates, however, were more pronounced. Continuous fish predation reduced benthic macroinvertebrates biomass decreasing the oxygen penetration depth, which in turn strongly reduced water–atmosphere CO2 fluxes while it increased CH4 emission. Our work shows that fish can strongly impact GHG production and consumption processes as well as emission pathways, through trophic and non-trophic effects. Furthermore, our findings suggest their impact on benthic organisms is an important factor regulating carbon (CO2 and CH4) emissions.

Climate-induced changes in precipitation and land-use intensification affect the discharge of streams worldwide, which, together with eutrophication and loss of riparian canopy, can affect periphyton biomass and composition, and therefore, ultimately the stream functioning. We investigated the responses of periphyton biomass and life-forms (i.e., high profile, low profile and motile) to these changes applying an experimental approach by modulating nutrients (nutrient diffusion substrates enriched with 0.5 M NH4NO3 + 0.031 M KH2PO4 and without nutrient enrichment) and light availability (50% shade and full light) along a gradient in discharge ranging from 0.46 to 3.89 L/s (0.7 to 6.5 cm/s) in twelve large-sized (12- m long) outdoor flumes resembling lowland streams. We also analysed the potential effects of other environmental variables including macroinvertebrates on the responses of periphyton to discharge, nutrients, and light. Light and nutrient availability drastically affected periphyton biomass and composition responses to discharge. Periphyton biomass decreased with increasing discharge when shaded but this did not happen when exposed to full light. Under full light conditions, nutrient enrichment mediated an increase in the periphyton biomass with increasing discharge, possibly reflecting an increased metabolism, but this did not happen under non-enriched conditions. Enrichment further affected the compositional responses of periphyton to discharge, with an increase in the biomass of motile, fast growing, small-sized flagellated at low discharge conditions, and mitigating a loss of high profile periphyton under higher discharges. Light did not affect periphyton composition, and the abundance or feeding-group composition of the macroinvertebrates did not affect biomass or composition of the periphyton either. Our results suggest that nutrient enrichment and light play an important synergistic role in the responses of the periphyton biomass and composition to discharge and emphasize the relevance of riparian canopy conservation and eutrophication control to avoid periphyton growth under increased discharge scenarios in small lowland streams. A recent paper by Beretta-Blanco and Carrasco-Letelier (2021) claims that agricultural eutrophication is not one of the main causes for cyanobacterial blooms in rivers and artificial reservoirs. By combining rivers of markedly different hydrological characteristics e.g., presence/absence and number of dams, river discharge and geological setting, the study speculates about the role of nutrients for modulating phytoplankton chlorophyll-a. Here, we identified serious flaws, from erratic and inaccurate data manipulation. The study did not define how erroneous original dataset values were treated, how the variables below the detection/quantification limit were numerically introduced, lack of mandatory variables for river studies such as flow and rainfall, arbitrary removal of pH > 7.5 values (which were not outliers), and finally how extreme values of other environmental variables were included. In addition, we identified conceptual and procedural mistakes such as biased construction/evaluation of model prediction capability. The study trained the model using pooled data from a short restricted lotic section of the (large) Uruguay River and from both lotic and reservoir domains of the Negro River, but then tested predictability within the (small) Cuareim River. Besides these methodological considerations, the article shows misinterpretations of the statistical correlation of cause and effect neglecting basic limnological knowledge of the ecology of harmful algal blooms (HABs) and international research on land use effects on freshwater quality. The argument that pH is a predictor variable for HABs neglects overwhelming basic paradigms of carbon fluxes and change in pH because of primary productivity. As a result, the article introduces the notion that HABs formation are not related to agricultural land use and water residence time and generate a great risk for the management of surface waterbodies. This reply also emphasizes the need for good practices of open data management, especially for public databases in view of external reproducibility.

Si bien las causas y consecuencias de la eutrofización son múltiples, este artículo analiza aspectos fundamentales en el contexto actual en Uruguay, con especial énfasis en las floraciones cianobacterianas como una de las consecuencias más frecuentes y notorias. El agravamiento de la eutrofización y sus síntomas, que se predicen con el cambio climático; las claves para la reducción de las pérdidas difusas de fósforo hacia el agua superficial en suelos bajo uso agropecuario; y los cambios actuales y futuros en la gobernanza del agua y la gestión ambiental, son algunos de los temas más importantes considerados. En el análisis se identifican también múltiples desafíos, tanto en la generación de conocimiento como en la gestión ambiental asociada.

In arid and semiarid regions, extreme temperature events and the frequency and duration of drought will increase toward 2050, leading to increased salinisation of inland waters, aggravated by catchment erosion and human activities (e.g., crop irrigation). With salinisation, a decline in biodiversity is expected, with potential negative effects on food web structure and ecosystem dynamics. Our objective was to assess the changes in community and food web structure in 24 lakes along a wide salinity gradient (i.e., subsaline to hypersaline) in a semiarid region in northwest China. Fish, zooplankton, and macroinvertebrate communities were sampled for taxonomic determination, size structure, and stable isotope analysis (SIA; δ13C and δ15N). Based on SIA, we calculated the Layman metrics: nitrogen range, carbon range, total area, standard ellipses area, and the trophic position, for each community and for the entire food web. We found a reduced number of taxa of all analysed communities, and the complexity of the entire food web decreased in most saline lakes. In addition, the trophic diversity and trophic position declined, less so in the larger lakes, but these effects were not significant when studying the community food webs separately. Our results suggest that increasing salinisation with ongoing climate warming will have negative effects on lake ecosystems in arid and semiarid regions, emphasising the need to implement management measures at the watershed level to prevent or mitigate future changes in food web structure and biodiversity due to salinisation.

Disentangling the effects of climate change on nature is one of the main challenges facing ecologists nowadays. Warmer climates forces strong effects on lake biota for fish, leading to a reduction in size, changes in diet, more frequent reproduction, and stronger cascading effects. Space-for-time substitution studies (SFTS) are often used to unravel climate effects on lakes biota, however, results from continental lakes are potentially confounded by biogeographical and evolutionary differences, also leading to an overall higher fish species richness in warm lakes. Such differences may not be found in lakes on remote islands, where natural fish free lakes have been subjected to stocking only during the past few hundred years. We studied 20 species-poor lakes located in two remote island groups with contrasting climates, but similar seasonality: the Faroe Islands (cold, 6.5 ± 2.8 °C annual average (SD) and the Azores Islands (warm, 17.3 ± 2.9 °C)). As for mainland lakes, mean body size of fish in the warmer lakes were smaller overall, and phytoplankton per unit of phosphorus higher. The δ13C carbon range for basal organisms, and for the whole food web, appeared wider in colder lakes. In contrast to previous works in continental fresh waters, Layman metrics of the fish food web were similar between the two climatic regions. Our results from insular systems provide further evidence that ambient temperatures, at least partially, drive the changes in fish size structure and the cascading effects found along latitude gradients in lakes.

Warming, eutrophication, and increased omnivory by small-sized fish are global change processes that induce major effects on the food web structure and primary producers of shallow lakes. Despite the key relevance of phytoplankton and periphyton in freshwaters, the combined and potential synergistic effects of fish omnivory, warming and eutrophication, especially on periphyton, remains little addressed, particularly for subtropical shallow lakes. We experimentally tested the food web effects on phytoplankton and periphyton induced by small visually feeding omnivorous fish (Rhodeus ocellatus), high nutrient enrichment and warming (+4.5 degrees C) in thirtytwo 1000 L-mesocosms simulating littoral conditions of subtropical shallow lakes. We aimed at analysing the mechanisms and responses of periphyton and phytoplankton to these experimental factors. All mesocosms included the submerged macrophytes Vallisneria denseserrulata and Potamogeton lucens and artificial plants at 50% plant volume inhabited, plankton and macroinvertebrates. Small-sized visually feeding omnivorous fish enhanced phytoplankton dominance and periphyton loss. These changes coincided with a decrease in zooplankton biomass and a diversity loss of both zooplankton and macroinvertebrates as well as an increase in snail abundance. Fish presence led to a collapse of cladocerans, thereby releasing the grazing pressure on phytoplankton, and predator and collector macroinvertebrates were replaced with small snails (Radix peregra < 0.5 cm) resulting in enhanced grazing on periphyton. Eutrophication reinforced the fish effects, while warming had weak or no effects. Our results indicate that omnivory by small-sized visually feeding fish may induce stronger effects on the food webs of shallow lakes, towards phytoplankton-dominated states, than the combined effect of nutrient enrichment and warming under the present experimental conditions. Glyphosate herbicide is ubiquitously used in agriculture and weed control. It has now been identified in aquatic ecosystems worldwide, where numerous studies have suggested that it may have both suppressive and stimulatory effects on diverse non-target organisms. We cultured natural biofilms from a hypereutrophic environment to test the effects on periphytic diatoms of exposure to a glyphosate-based herbicide formulation at concentrations from 0 to 10 mg L−1 of active ingredient. There were clear and significant differences between treatments in diatom community structure after the 15-day experiments. Diversity increased more in low glyphosate treatments relative to higher concentrations, and compositional analyses indicated statistically significant differences between glyphosate treatments. The magnitude of change observed was significantly correlated with glyphosate-based herbicide concentration. Our results show that glyphosate-based herbicides have species-selective effects on benthic diatoms that may significantly alter trajectories of community development and therefore may affect benthic habitats and whole ecosystem function.

Climate change has dramatically altered freshwater ecosystems and will continue to affect them further. As water-level fluctuations increase in frequency and intensity, the tolerance of aquatic organisms to abiotic stressors will become critical determinants of survival. Apple snail species in the genus Pomacea (Ampullariidae) live in freshwater throughout the tropics and subtropics, but deposit egg clutches on terrestrial substrates. Two species, Pomacea canaliculata and Pomacea maculata, are amongst the world’s most invasive species and are expanding their invasive ranges. To evaluate their survival during extreme dry-down conditions in their native range, we collected 156 apple snails (Pomacea spp.) from 4 permanent water bodies in Uruguay and buried them in dry sand to simulate drought. The expression of territorial behavior in wild species is especially suited to explore how animals integrate individual traits with dynamic environmental and social contexts. In this study, we focused on the seasonal variation of the determinants of territory size in the weakly electric fish Gymnotus omarorum. This species is a seasonal breeder that displays year-long territorial aggression, in which female and male dyads exhibit indistinguishable non-breeding territorial agonistic behavior and the only significant predictor of contest outcome is body size. We carried out field surveys across seasons that included the identification of individual location, measurements of water physico-chemical variables, characterization of individual morphometric and physiological traits, and their correlation to spatial distribution. Although Gymnotus omarorum tolerates a wide range of dissolved oxygen concentration, territory size correlated with dissolved oxygen in both seasons. In the non-breeding season, we show that territory size is sexually monomorphic and explained only by body size. In the breeding season, while body size no longer correlated with territory size, evidence of sexual differences in territory size determinants emerged. First, the overall spatial arrangement adopted a sexual bias. Second, territory size depended on gonadal hormones in both sexes, which was expected for males, but not previously reported in females. Third, females’ territory size correlated with gonadal size and females showed relatively larger territories than males, probably to meet sexually dimorphic energetic requirements. This study provides evidence of seasonal changes in factors correlated with territory size and contributes to the understanding of the mechanisms underlying behavioral plasticity.

Nitrogen lost from agriculture has altered the geochemistry of the biosphere, with pronounced impacts on aquatic ecosystems. We aim to elucidate the patterns and driving factors behind the N fluxes in lowland stream ecosystems differing about land-use and climatic-hydrological conditions. The climate-hydrology areas represented humid cold temperate/stable discharge conditions, and humid subtropical climate/flashy conditions. Three complementary monitoring sampling characteristics were selected, including a total of 43 streams under contrasting farming intensities. Farming intensity determined total dissolved N (TDN), nitrate concentrations, and total N concentration and loss to streams, despite differences in soil and climatic-hydrological conditions between and within regions. However, ammonium (NH4+) and dissolved organic N concentrations did not show significant responses to the farming intensity or climatic/hydrological conditions. A high dissolved inorganic N to TDN ratio was associated with the temperate climate and high base flow conditions, but not with farming intensity. In the absence of a significant increase in farming N use efficiency (or the introduction of other palliative measures), the expected farming intensification would result in a stronger increase in NO3&minus, TDN, and TN concentrations as well as in rising flow-weighted concentrations and loss in temperate and subtropical streams, which will further exacerbate eutrophication.

In Tasmania, where the native fish are mostly galaxiids, 9 non-native freshwater fish species have been introduced over the past 150 years, with uncertain ecological outcomes. We evaluated the effects of non-native predatory fishes (NNPF) and various environmental and biological variables on the trophic niche of native fish (galaxiids) and potential cascading effects. We analysed Layman’s food web metrics based on both stable isotope (δ15N and δ13C) values and fish stomach contents in 14 shallow Tasmanian lakes along a NNPF abundance gradient. The food web metrics calculated were (1) range of δ13C (CR) and δ15N (NR) centroid distance (CD) and (2) standard ellipse area. Our results showed that NNPF relative abundance in the fish catch per unit effort was negatively related to the galaxiids’ trophic niche metrics (e.g., CRG, NR G, and CDG), trophic position, and the pelagic contribution to the diet. Moreover, the proportion of galaxiids in the diet of NNPF was higher in turbid lakes. The zooplankton standard ellipse area was negatively correlated with the pelagic contribution to the NNPF diet, and NNPF relative abundance was positively correlated with the maximum body size of calanoid copepods. While our results suggest a negative effect of NNPF on the trophic niche of galaxiids, the cascading effect on phytoplankton biomass was weak. Sudden increases in temperature and turbidity in aquatic ecosystems are expected for different regions in the future, as a result of the more frequent extreme climatic events that are predicted. The consequences of these abrupt changes in the outcomes of predator&ndash, prey interactions are unknown. Here, we tested the effects of a heat wave and a turbidity pulse on the foraging success of a subtropical cichlid fish (Gymnogeophagus terrapurpura) on amphipods (Hyalella curvispina). We carried out a short-term experiment combining treatments of turbidity (3 and 100 nephelometric turbidity units [NTU]) and water temperature (19.2, 22.2, 25.2 and 27.0 &deg, C), considering potential differences given by fish length. Changes in water temperature did not promote significant changes in prey consumption. Higher turbidity, in contrast, decreased prey consumption. Also, we found that fish with different body lengths consumed a similar amount of prey under clear waters, but, in turbid waters, bigger individuals were more efficient than the smaller individuals. This finding is an empirical demonstration that the effect of increased turbidity on predation rate depends upon predator body size, and it suggests that bigger body sizes may help overcome turbidity-associated limitations in finding and capturing prey. Our short-term results suggest that, if turbidity pulses and heat waves become more frequent in the future, the outcome of fish&ndash, invertebrate interaction can be affected by local characteristics such as fish population size distribution.

This article belongs to the Special Issue Trophic Interactions in Warm Freshwater Ecosystems The Neotropics represent a hotspot for freshwater biodiversity with vast number of fish species of scarce ecological knowledge. This holds true for the Uruguay River, where fish assemblages and their diets remain unexplored. Fish assemblages were surveyed in 14 sites along the river main course, from headwaters to mouth (approximately 1800 km), with the aim to identify the trophic roles of fishes and to describe trophic structure of these assemblages, following standardized sampling campaigns and laboratory procedures. One hundred species (2309 gut contents) were analysed and classified into four trophic groups subdivided into eight lower-level groups: Piscivore, piscivore-invertivore, detritivore, omnivore-detritivore, omnivore-invertivore, omnivore-planktivore and omnivore-herbivore. The trophic structure of the assemblages varied along the river, with the relative species richness of fish consuming terrestrial invertebrates increasing towards the middle river section, probably driven by the large floodplains in that areas, supporting global theories such as the flood pulse concept. This study describes the feeding habits of fish along the Uruguay River, being the first dietary description for 29 species. This knowledge is essential for management and conservation, serving as baseline in the context of future environmental changes while generating novel evidence on the functioning of ecosystems in this scarcely studied climatic region.

Stable-isotope analysis is widely used in aquatic ecosystem studies to evaluate trophic structure and resource dynamics. Because δ15N values vary in freshwater systems, e.g., reflecting variations in land use, suitable baseline indicators must be specified. Few investigators have identified specific baseline organisms based on thorough and methodical screening. We screened for baseline organisms in temperate lotic waters based on 4 criteria: 1) baseline organisms should be easy to collect, 2) within-site variation in δ15N levels should be low, 3) δ15N should reflect land use, and 4) trophic position (TP) of consumers calculated from the baseline should be independent of system-specific δ15N variability as long as no systematic change in food consumption occurred. Differences in trophic web structure in otherwise similar ecosystems as a consequence of direct or indirect effects of ambient temperature differences can lead to changes in ecosystem functioning. Based on nitrogen and carbon stable isotope analysis, we compared the food-web structure in a series of subtropical (Uruguay, 30–35°S) and temperate (Denmark, 55–57°N) shallow lakes. The food-web length was on average one trophic position shorter in the subtropical shallow lakes compared with their temperate counterparts. This may reflect the fact that the large majority of subtropical fish species are omnivores (i.e., feed on more than one trophic level) and have a strong degree of feeding niche overlap. The shapes of the food webs of the subtropical lakes (truncated and trapezoidal) suggest that they are fuelled by a combination of different energy pathways. In contrast, temperate lake food webs tended to be more triangular, likely as a result of more simple pathways with a top predator integrating different carbon sources. The effects of such differences on ecosystem functioning and stability, and the connection with ambient temperature as a major underlying factor, are, however, still incipiently known.

The maintenance of biodiversity in dynamic landscapes can be explained through the unifying concept of the metacommunity, an ecological system with a changing structure that arises from both the biotic features of its component species and from changing temporal processes. We evaluated the relative importance of environmental factors and spatial factors on the structure of metacommunities of zooplankton in a Neotropical floodplain system, in relation to hydrological dynamics and potential connections among lakes. Zooplankton was sampled from 16 to 22 shallow lakes during droughts and floods in two hydrologically contrasting years. Copepods appeared to be more limited by their dispersal potential, while testate amoebae and rotifers seemed to be controlled mostly by environmental variables. These findings stress the importance of the species sorting metacommunity paradigm for groups with the smallest propagules and adult body sizes. The importance of environmental factors rather than spatial factors was apparent during floods, likely due to the facilitation of animal dispersal by floods. Our results demonstrate that the importance of these factors depends on both the functional traits of major zooplankton groups and the hydrological dynamics of the region.

Transformation of the natural land cover is one of the most important global changes. Changes in land use may strongly affect ecosystem functions and biodiversity by directly or indirectly modifying key structural properties. Here, we examined the effects of land use on the size structure of fish communities in subtropical Uruguayan streams. We analysed the suitability of non-taxonomic, size-related variables as a tool to elucidate shifts in stream fish assemblages along a gradient in land use change. We also tested some taxonomic variables (e.g., species richness and species diversity) to compare their response with size-related variables. In the more anthropogenic disturbed basins (i.e., dominance of urban and agricultural land use), we found higher size diversity, slope of size spectrum (flatter slopes) and total range of fish length, whereas higher species richness, fish abundance and species diversity were detected in more pristine stream basins (i.e., dominance of rangelands). In combination with traditional taxonomic variables, size-related variables of fish communities in streams may be effective tools in evaluating the changes occurring in freshwater ecosystems associated with anthropogenic changes in land use.

Dormant stages (“resting eggs”) produced by cladocerans can persist for long periods of time in sediments and restore populations once the environmental conditions become favorable again. Lake Blanca, a subtropical shallow eutrophic lake, hosts a cladoceran community dominated by small-sized species. Previous studies on zooplankton resting eggs suggested that the cladoceran genera Daphnia and Simocephalus were present, but they had never been found before in water samples. In the present study, we compared a biweekly active community sampling with the resting egg bank (passive cladoceran community) from littoral and pelagic zones. Moreover, we tested the amount of samples required to have a representative reconstruction of the diversity in both compartments (water and sediment). Lake Blanca showed a relatively high cladoceran species richness (24) in the water column, with rapid temporal replacement. Several species were present in water samples during short temporal windows; therefore, to detect these species a strong sampling effort in terms of temporal frequency and spatial distribution was required. Contrary to our expectations, resting egg community showed a lower diversity than the active community; however, we demonstrated that the analysis of resting egg bank composition can help detect general community structure patterns.

We dedicate this paper to the late Maria Rosa Miracle, who was a key researcher in the shallow lakes community, always enthusiastically dedicated to science, and always ready to discuss and guide younger scientists and fellow colleagues on the dynamics of zooplankton as well as on shallow lakes functioning at large. She will be sadly missed.Plant habitat complexity can buffer against predator-prey interactions by offering physical refuges, and also novel microhabitats for alternative prey. In shallow lakes, submerged and free-floating plants affect predator-prey interactions with expected differences related to climate-driven differences in fish community structure. We tested the overall hypothesis that fish predation shapes the structure of plant-associated macroinvertebrate communities. By introducing artificial free-floating and submerged plants in a total of 14 shallow lakes under contrasting climate regimes (temperate and subtropical), we predicted that higher densities of macroinvertebrates would occur in the temperate zone where littoral fish predation is comparatively weaker than in the subtropics. We also tested the hypothesis that different structural complexities and % PVI would lead to different association patterns. Taxonomic richness, diversity, and densities of plant-attached macroinvertebrates were several fold higher in the temperate lakes. Macroinvertebrate densities per unit of plant weight were generally higher on the more complex free-floating than on the more abundant (as % PVI) submerged plants. The structure of littoral macroinvertebrates showed no clear relationship with the trophic state gradient. Fish communities, whose structure (biomass, density and habitat use) differed consistently between the temperate and subtropical locations, seemingly shaped the macroinvertebrate communities, most likely via predation and in the subtropics potentially also by competition. Free-floating plants appeared as a better anti-predation refuge or a preferred habitat for macroinvertebrates, particularly in the subtropics, but with increasing water turbidity this pattern became less distinct. In contrast, in the temperate lakes, the use of artificial plants by macroinvertebrates was rather related to the biomass of periphyton than to their refuge capacity, thus suggesting stronger bottom-up effects. A stronger fish predation pressure, which is to be expected with climate warming and eutrophication, may reduce the richness and abundance of plant-associated macroinvertebrates, with potentially strong impacts on shallow lake functioning. A warming-driven expansion of free-floating plants could, if moderate, weaken such effects, but a more diverse macrophyte community would facilitate co-existence of macroinvertebrate and fish.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is an important factor in aquatic ecosystems, which is involved in a large variety of biogeochemical and ecological processes and recent literature suggests that it could be strongly affected by agriculture in different climates. Based on novel monitoring techniques, we investigated the interaction of climate and agriculture effects on DOM quantity and molecular composition. To examine this, we took water samples over two years in two paired intensive and extensive farming catchments in each Denmark (temperate climate) and Uruguay (subtropical climate). We measured dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and nitrogen (DON) concentrations and DOC and DON molecular fractions with size-exclusion chromatography. Moreover, we assessed DOM composition with absorbance and fluorescence measurements, as well as parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC). We also calculated DOC and DON loads based on daily discharge measurements, as well as measured precipitation and air temperature. In the catchments in Uruguay, the fluvial DOM was characterized by higher temporal variability of DOC and DON loads which were clearly related to a higher temporal variability of precipitation and a DOM composition with rather plant-like character relative to the Danish catchments. Moreover, we consistently found a higher temporal variability of DOC an DON loads in the intensive farming catchments than in the extensive farming catchments, with the highest temporal variability in the Uruguayan intensive farming catchment. Moreover, the composition of DOM exported from the intensive farming catchments was always complex and related to microbial processing in both Denmark and Uruguay. This was indicated by low C : N ratios, several spectroscopic DOM composition indexes and the PARAFAC fluorescence components. We propose that the consistent effect of intensive farming on DOM composition and the temporal variability of DOC and DON loads is related to similarities in the management of agriculture, which may have wide-scale implications for fluvial DOM composition, as well as related ecological processes and biogeochemical cycles.

Predators play a key role in the functioning of shallow lakes. Differences between the response of temperate and subtropical systems to fish predation have been proposed, but experimental evidence is scarce. To elucidate cascading effects produced by predators in contrasting climatic zones, we conducted a mesocosm experiment in three pairs of lakes in Uruguay and Denmark. We used two typical planktivorous-omnivorous fish species (Jenynsia multidentata + Cnesterodon decemmaculatus and Gasterosteus aculeatus + Perca fluviatilis) and one littoral omnivorous-predatory macroinvertebrate (Palaemonetes argentinus and Gammarus lacustris), alone and combined, in numbers resembling natural densities. Fish predation on zooplankton increased phytoplankton biomass in both climate zones, whereas the effects of predatory macroinvertebrates on zooplankton and phytoplankton were not significant in either climate zone. Macroinvertebrates (that freely colonized the sampling devices) were diminished by fish in both climate areas; however, periphyton biomass did not vary among treatments. Our experiments demonstrated that fish affected the structure of both planktonic and littoral herbivorous communities in both climate regions, with a visible positive cascading effect on phytoplankton biomass, but no effects on periphyton. Altogether, fish impacts appeared to be a strong driver of turbid water conditions in shallow lakes regardless of climatic zone by indirectly contributing to increasing phytoplankton biomass.

Summary Stable isotope analyses of carbon and nitrogen are widely used to study food web structure in ecosystems. However, isotopic signatures are affected by the often-needed chemical preservation of tissues in the field, which impedes or weakens the interpretation of results. The scarcely available correction factors for preserved fish samples are species specific and have so far not been validated for general use. Moreover, no studies have evaluated the effect of preservation on the estimation of metrics typically used in food web studies. We aimed to develop a general correction model suitable for a vast number of fish species and to test whether formalin-preserved fish muscle δ13C and δ15N values can be used in food web metrics estimations. For this purpose, we used paired formalin-preserved and fresh muscle samples of 116 fish individuals belonging to 17 species covering a wide range of fish trophic characteristics, from nine tropical streams. Formalin decreased δ13C values by 0·6–1·4‰ (0·94‰ on average) and increased δ15N values by 0·3–0·5‰ (0·33‰ on average). Preservation effect was ecologically significant for δ13C values (as it surpassed natural trophic fractionation) and less important for δ15N values (being minor than natural trophic fractionation). However, preservation did not affect estimation of community-wide food web metrics. The deviations in preserved samples varied among species and increased with increasing fresh sample C : N ratios and changes in carbon proportions after preservation and with increasing isotopic values (for δ13C). Despite these major deviations in δ13C values, we developed and validated a powerful general linear model to predict fresh fish muscle isotopic signatures from preserved samples. Formalin-preserved samples of fish can be used in food web studies, simplifying sampling logistics and allowing the use of museum and scientific collection specimens for historical food web reconstruction. Food web metrics based on δ13C vs. δ15N biplots can be directly estimated from preserved samples as the preservation effect seems overall consistent. When more detailed information is needed, or fresh and preserved samples are being simultaneously studied, formalin-preserved isotopic signatures can be corrected to fresh values using the model developed in this study.

One of the most prominent manifestations of the ongoing climate warming is the retreat of glaciers and ice sheets around the world. Retreating glaciers result in the formation of new ponds and lakes, which are available for colonization. The gradual appearance of these new habitat patches allows us to determine to what extent the composition of asexual Daphnia (water flea) populations is affected by environmental drivers vs. dispersal limitation. Here, we used a landscape genetics approach to assess the processes structuring the clonal composition of species in the D. pulex species complex that have colonized periglacial habitats created by ice-sheet retreat in western Greenland. We analysed 61 populations from a young ( 150 years) of lakes and ponds. We identified 42 asexual clones that varied widely in spatial distribution. Beta-diversity was higher among older than among younger systems. Lineage sorting by the environment explained 14% of the variation in clonal composition whereas the pure effect of geographical distance was very small and statistically insignificant (R-adj(2) = 0.010, P = 0.085). Dispersal limitation did not seem important, even among young habitat patches. The observation of several tens of clones colonizing the area combined with environmentally driven clonal composition of populations illustrates that population assembly of asexual species in the Arctic is structured by environmental gradients reflecting differences in the ecology of clones.

In water bodies where cladocerans are typically small or present in low biomass, such as in the tropics and subtropics of South America, rotifers may play a larger role in ecosystem functioning than in temperate lakes. The aim of this study was to analyze the horizontal distribution of richness and abundance of rotifers, their diel distribution patterns, and the relative importance of physical and biotic characteristics as their shaping factors, in a subtropical shallow vegetated lake of the Paraná River floodplain (Argentina). Three sampling stations were located along the major axis of the lake, one in open waters and two in littoral area dominated by the emergent Panicum elephantipes, Cyperus alternifolius and floating mats of the filamentous algae Cladophora spp. Two further stations were located on the transverse axis. Rotifer samples were taken on four occasions (at noon and midnight) during a five week period in the summer to avoid possible changes in the pattern of distribution of macrophytes and hydrological variability of the lake. Rotifer richness was higher in the littoral zone whereas rotifer abundance was higher in the limnetic zone. Some rotifers, such as Brachionus havanaensis and Keratella tropica exhibited changes in their diel horizontal distribution with higher concentrations of organisms at vegetated zones during the day time. In contrast, Polyarthra sp. were more abundant at night-time in both limnetic and littoral areas. The heterogeneous horizontal distribution of rotifers cannot be explained by the rather homogeneous distribution of both physical environmental factors and phytoplankton abundance. Rotifer distribution may be related to a complex of factors including the presence or absence of vegetation, the relatively uniform distribution of visual predators (fishes) and the heterogeneous distribution of non-visual predators (insects and shrimps). Summary 1. Different behavioural responses of planktonic animals to their main predators, fish, have been reported from shallow lakes. In north temperate lakes, large-bodied zooplankton may seek refuge from predation among macrophytes, whereas in subtropical lakes, avoidance of macrophytes has been observed. The prevalent behaviour probably depends on the characteristics of the fish community, which in Mediterranean lakes is typically dispersed in both the open water zone and in the littoral, as in temperate lakes, and is dominated by small size classes, as in subtropical lakes. 2. We performed ‘habitat choice’ experiments to test the response of Daphnia magna to predation cues at both the horizontal and vertical level by mimicking a ‘shallow littoral’ zone with plants and a ‘deeper pelagic’ zone with sediments. 3. Initial separate response experiments showed that natural plants, artificial plants and predation cues all repelled D. magna in the absence of other stimuli, while sediments alone did not trigger any significant response by D. magna. 4. The habitat choice experiments showed that, in the presence of predation cues and absence of plants, Daphnia moved towards areas with sediment. In the presence of both plants and sediments, Daphnia moved away from the plants towards the sediments under both shallow and deep water treatment conditions. 5. Based on these results, we suggest that Daphnia in Mediterranean shallow lakes avoid submerged macrophytes and instead prefer to hide near the sediment when exposed to predation risk, as also observed in subtropical shallow lakes. This pattern is not likely to change with water level alterations, a common feature of lakes in the region, even if the effectiveness of the refuge may be reduced.

Global warming and eutrophication in fresh and coastal waters may mutually reinforce the symptoms they express and thus the problems they cause.

Summary 1. Filamentous green algae (FGA) may represent an alternative state in high-nutrient shallow temperate lakes. Furthermore, a clear water state is sometimes associated with the dominance of FGA; however, the mechanisms involved remain uncertain. 2. We hypothesised that FGA may promote a clear water state by directly suppressing phytoplankton growth, mostly via the release of allelochemicals, and that this interaction may be affected by temperature. 3. We examined the relationships between FGA, phytoplanktonic chlorophyll a concentrations and zooplankton in a series of mesocosms (2.8 m3) mimicking enriched shallow ponds now and in a future warmer climate (0 and c. 5 °C above ambient temperatures). We then tested the potential allelopathic effects of FGA (Cladophora sp. and Spirogyra sp.) on phytoplankton using several short-term microcosms and laboratory experiments. 4. Mesocosms with FGA evidenced lower phytoplanktonic chlorophyll a concentrations than those without. Zooplankton and zooplankton : phytoplankton biomass ratios did not differ between mesocosms with and without FGA, suggesting that grazing was not responsible for the negative effects on phytoplanktonic biomass (chlorophyll a). 5. Our field microcosm experiments demonstrated that FGA strongly suppressed the growth of natural phytoplankton at non-limiting nutrient conditions and regardless of phytoplankton initial concentrations or micronutrients addition. Furthermore, we found that the negative effect of FGA on phytoplankton growth increased up to 49% under high incubation temperatures. The experiment performed using FGA filtrates confirmed that the inhibitory effect of FGA on phytoplankton may be attributed to allelochemicals. 6. Our results suggest that FGA control of phytoplankton growth may be an important mechanism for stabilising clear water in shallow temperate lakes dominated by FGA and that FGA may play a larger role when lakes get warmer.

SUMMARY 1. Shallow lakes and ponds contribute disproportionally to species richness relative to other aquatic ecosystems. In-lake conditions (e.g. presence of submerged plants) seem to play a key role in determining diversity, as has been demonstrated for temperate lakes. When water quality deteriorates and turbidity increases, conditions in such lakes are affected drastically resulting in a loss of diversity. However, it is not clear whether subtropical lakes show the same pattern and whether the richness of all groups reacts similarly to environmental changes. 2. Our aim was to analyse the main factors explaining patterns of species richness in plankton, fish and submerged macrophyte assemblages in both turbid and clear subtropical shallow lakes. We analysed abiotic and biotic features of 18 subtropical, small- to mediumsized, shallow lakes along the Uruguayan coast. We compared both turbid and clear ecosystem states and evaluated the relative variance explained by the factors measured. 3. Variables describing lake and catchment morphology, as well as the percentage of the water column occupied by submerged macrophytes (%PVI) and water turbidity, had strong effects on taxon richness. Interestingly, individual biotic groups had dissimilar richness patterns. Macrophyte %PVI decreased with increasing lake area, while fish species richness showed the opposite pattern. Phytoplankton species richness increased with macrophyte %PVI, while the zooplankton richness pattern varied depending on the taxonomic group considered. 4. Overall, our results indicate that, as found for temperate lakes, a greater submerged plant cover promotes higher species richness in several groups, and that this may overwhelm the otherwise expected positive effect of lake size on species richness. On the other hand, small-bodied zooplankton predominated in lakes with high plant abundance. Our findings concur with recent studies, indicating that refuge capacity of aquatic plants might be weaker in (sub)tropical than in temperate shallow lakes.

The trophic structure of fish assemblages often varies seasonally, following the changes in food availability and supposedly water temperature. To unveil potential drivers of trophic shifts, we studied changes in fish trophic structure at both whole-assemblage and species levels at contrasting food availability and water temperatures in a subtropical stream. We analysed the diet of the most abundant omnivorous species (Bryconamericus iheringii) monthly along the year, searching for relationships with environmental variables changing seasonally (i.e. temperature and water level) and with fish reproductive stage. We ran a single-species food choice field experiment with fixed animal and vegetal food availability in contrasting seasons to test food availability as driver of diet shifts. At the assemblage level, we found a higher consumption of vegetal during summer, reflecting the increased proportion of vegetal in the diet of omnivores, which dominated the assemblage. At the species level, the enhanced vegetal consumption was related to increases in temperature and reduction in water level. Moreover, fish selected for vegetal during summer and for animal food in winter under experimental conditions. Our findings support the role of temperature driving food web dynamics by increasing fish herbivory towards warmer scenarios, with potential strong implications for whole-assemblage trophic structure.
