Decoration Features of Second Iron Age Pottery South of the Po The paper analyses on a chronological typological level the decorative syntax present on impasto pottery from the Late Iron Age (Ligure III period: 475–89 BC) in lower Piedmont (inner Piedmontese Liguria), where vessel forms and decorative elements appear largely in continuity with those of the Middle Iron Age (Ligure II period: 625–475 BC). Decoration is generally present on closed shapes (situliform vases, ollae). Compared to the Middle Iron Age, the percentage of decorated pottery increases and the decorative elements become more elaborate. The most characteristic elements are the horizontal rows of finger or tool impressions, the simple zigzags, at first continuous and then interrupted (the latter evolving over time from single to double and then to multiple, sometimes with the alternate insertion of triangular or circular impressions at the corners), the impressions with or without clay, are usually on the lower part of the vessel, sometimes in combination with the zigzag motif. Shapes and decorative syntax are not found in the funerary and settlement contexts of northern Pied mont and more generally in Cispadana, while they seem to have an identifying character for the Ligurian groups of inland Piedmont.

Abstract Background Safe pet feeding practices and food bowl hygiene measures are important for minimising the risk of microbiological contaminations in the domestic environment. This study compares the practices reported by dog and cat caregivers, and investigates whether cleaning method, feed type or bowl material affects the microbiological contamination of dog food bowls. Results Data from 351 dog caregivers and 186 cat caregivers were collected via an online survey. The majority of dogs (70.7%) were fed twice daily, whereas cats (43%) were mostly fed ad libitum. The most common material for dog food bowls was metal (67.1%) versus plastic (38.1%) and metal (37.6%) for cats. Dog food bowls were most frequently cleaned after each meal (35.7%); whereas for cats, 21.5% were cleaned after each meal, 22.7% once a day and 19.3% 2–3 times a week. Introduction: Advancements in MRI-guided radiotherapy (MRgRT) enable clinical parallel workflows (CPW) for online adaptive planning (oART), allowing medical physicists (MPs), physicians (MDs), and radiation therapists (RTTs) to perform their tasks simultaneously. This study evaluates the impact of this upgrade on the total treatment time by analyzing each step of the current 0.35T-MRgRT workflow. Methods: The time process of the workflow steps for 254 treatment fractions in 0.35 MRgRT was examined. Patients have been grouped based on disease site, breathing modality (BM) (BHI or FB), and fractionation (stereotactic body RT [SBRT] or standard fractionated long course [LC]). The time spent for the following workflow steps in Adaptive Treatment (ADP) was analyzed: Patient Setup Time (PSt), MRI Acquisition and Matching (MRt), MR Re-contouring Time (RCt), Re-Planning Time (RPt), Treatment Delivery Time (TDt). PurposeMagnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-guided radiotherapy enables adaptive treatment plans based on daily anatomical changes and accurate organ visualization. However, the bias field artifact can compromise image quality, affecting diagnostic accuracy and quantitative analyses. This study aims to assess the impact of bias field correction on 0.35 T pelvis MRIs by evaluating clinical anatomy visualization and generative adversarial network (GAN) auto-segmentation performance.Materials and methods3D simulation MRIs from 60 prostate cancer patients treated on MR-Linac (0.35 T) were collected and preprocessed with the N4ITK algorithm for bias field correction. A 3D GAN architecture was trained, validated, and tested on 40, 10, and 10 patients, respectively, to auto-segment the organs at risk (OARs) rectum and bladder. The GAN was trained and evaluated either with the original or the bias-corrected MRIs. The Dice similarity coefficient (DSC) and 95th percentile Hausdorff distance (HD95th) were computed for the segmented volumes of each patient. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test assessed the statistical difference of the metrics within OARs, both with and without bias field correction. Five radiation oncologists blindly scored 22 randomly chosen patients in terms of overall image quality and visibility of boundaries (prostate, rectum, bladder, seminal vesicles) of the original and bias-corrected MRIs. Bennett’s S score and Fleiss’ kappa were used to assess the pairwise interrater agreement and the interrater agreement among all the observers, respectively.ResultsIn the test set, the GAN trained and evaluated on original and bias-corrected MRIs showed DSC/HD95th of 0.92/5.63 mm and 0.92/5.91 mm for the bladder and 0.84/10.61 mm and 0.83/9.71 mm for the rectum. No statistical differences in the distribution of the evaluation metrics were found neither for the bladder (DSC: p = 0.07; HD95th: p = 0.35) nor for the rectum (DSC: p = 0.32; HD95th: p = 0.63). From the clinical visual grading assessment, the bias-corrected MRI resulted mostly in either no change or an improvement of the image quality and visualization of the organs’ boundaries compared with the original MRI.ConclusionThe bias field correction did not improve the anatomy visualization from a clinical point of view and the OARs’ auto-segmentation outputs generated by the GAN.

The Galactic bulge hosts the Milky Way’s oldest stars, possibly coming from disrupted globular clusters (GCs) or the bulge’s primordial building blocks, making these stars witnesses to the Galaxy’s early chemical enrichment. The Galactic bar currently dominates the bulge’s region, altering the orbits of objects formed before its formation and complicating the trace of the field stars’ original clusters. Here, we present the discovery of a fossil record of this evolution, SOS1—a star trapped in the bar, exhibiting significant enhancements in nitrogen, sodium, and aluminum, typical of second-generation GC stars. SOS1 also shows an s-process Ce enhancement, suggesting an old age and early enrichment by fast-rotating massive stars in the Galaxy’s earliest phases. With the purpose of finding the SOS1's parent GC, we derive its precise chemodynamical properties by combining high-precision proper motions from Gaia with Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment–detailed chemical abundances. Our analysis suggests that SOS1 was possibly stripped from the GC Terzan 5 by the Galactic bar’s gravitational influence approximately 350 Myr ago. We also found chemical similarities suggesting that SOS1 belonged to the most metal-poor, ancient, and peripheral stellar population of Terzan 5. These results not only support the hypothesis that Terzan 5 is a remnant of a primordial building block of the Galactic bulge but also suggest this cluster continues losing stars to the bar. Our method highlights how powerful the use of chemodynamical properties in the Gaia era is for tracing the Galaxy’s evolutionary history.

Background and purpose: Automation is desirable for organ segmentation in radiotherapy. This study compared deep learning methods for auto-segmentation of organs-at-risk (OARs) and clinical target volume (CTV) in prostate cancer patients undergoing fractionated magnetic resonance (MR)-guided adaptive radiation therapy. Models predicting dense displacement fields (DDFMs) between planning and fraction images were compared to patient-specific (PSM) and baseline (BM) segmentation models. Materials and methods: A dataset of 92 patients with planning and fraction MR images (MRIs) from two institutions were used. DDFMs were trained to predict dense displacement fields (DDFs) between the planning and fraction images, which were subsequently used to propagate the planning contours of the bladder, rectum, and CTV to the daily MRI. The training was performed either with true planning-fraction image pairs or with planning images and their counterparts deformed by known DDFs. The BMs were trained on 53 planning images, while to generate PSMs, the BMs were fine-tuned using the planning image of a given single patient. The evaluation included Dice similarity coefficient (DSC), the average (HDavg) and the 95th percentile (HD95) Hausdorff distance (HD). Results: The DDFMs with DSCs for bladder/rectum of 0.76/0.76 performed worse than PSMs (0.91/0.90) and BMs (0.89/0.88). The same trend was observed for HDs. For CTV, DDFM and PSM performed similarly yielding DSCs of 0.87 and 0.84, respectively. Conclusions: DDFMs were found suitable for CTV delineation after rigid alignment. However, for OARs they were outperformed by PSMs, as they predicted only limited deformations even in the presence of substantial anatomical changes.

Abstract Background Over recent years, pet owners have started to demonstrate increased sensitivity toward their companion animals, which includes an increase in the attention paid towards their nutrition, seen as a way of safeguarding their pets’ welfare. The aim of this study was to identify how pet food quality traits are perceived as being the most important by dog and cat owners. To this end, a survey of dog and cat owners was conducted by means of a questionnaire distributed in pet stores and trade fairs throughout Italy. Results A total of 935 surveys were collected; 61.8% of which were compiled by female pet owners. The respondents were relatively homogeneously distributed between cat (30.8%), dog (39.4%), and cat and dog (29.8%) owners. A quarter of the owners (25.5%) reported to have asked their veterinarian for advice on which pet food to buy, and almost a third (30.4%) trusted the advice posted on the web sites of well-known brands. “Contains natural ingredients” was the characteristic that obtained the highest mean score (4.3 out of 5). Elderly owners (> 65 years) placed most importance on whether a product had a high price, and least on feed appearance, animal satisfaction, and stool quality. Young owners (

An interesting assemblage of ancient ceramic materials connected or potentially connected with gaming activities has been characterized from the archaeometric point of view. The materials (washer-like pieces, small spheres, and cubic dice, with and without inscriptions) were found in the Villa del Foro excavation (Alessandria, Italy). They are related to the early Ligurian population of the site and their frequent contacts with Etruscan both in Etruria and in the Po Valley, in a period spanning the early VI century BC till the first half of the V century BC. Starting from the materials evidence, hypotheses are proposed concerning their possible use and cultural meaning. The studied cubic dice are discussed in the wider context of the pre-Roman diffusion of these objects.

INTRODUCTION: Solid tumors are less oxygenated than their tissue of origin. Low intra-tumor oxygen levels are associated with worse outcome, increased metastatic potential and immature phenotype in breast cancer. We have reported that tumor hypoxia correlates to low differentiation status in breast cancer. Less is known about effects of hypoxia on non-malignant cells. Here we address whether hypoxia influences the differentiation stage of non-malignant breast epithelial cells and potentially have bearing on early stages of tumorigenesis. METHODS: Normal human primary breast epithelial cells and immortalized non-malignant mammary epithelial MCF-10A cells were grown in a three-dimensional overlay culture on laminin-rich extracellular matrix for up to 21 days at normoxic or hypoxic conditions. Acinar morphogenesis and expression of markers of epithelial differentiation and cell polarization were analyzed by immunofluorescence, immunohistochemistry, qPCR and immunoblot. RESULTS: In large ductal carcinoma in situ patient-specimens, we find that epithelial cells with high HIF-1α levels and multiple cell layers away from the vasculature are immature compared to well-oxygenated cells. We show that hypoxic conditions impaired acinar morphogenesis of primary and immortalized breast epithelial cells grown ex vivo on laminin-rich matrix. Normoxic cultures formed polarized acini-like spheres with the anticipated distribution of marker proteins associated with mammary epithelial polarization e.g. α6-integrin, laminin 5 and Human Milk Fat Globule/MUC1. At hypoxia, cells were not polarized and the sub-cellular distribution pattern of the marker proteins rather resembled that reported in vivo in breast cancer. The hypoxic cells remained in a mitotic state, whereas proliferation ceased with acinar morphogenesis at normoxia. We found induced expression of the differentiation repressor ID1 in the undifferentiated hypoxic MCF-10A cell structures. Acinar morphogenesis was associated with global histone deacetylation whereas the hypoxic breast epithelial cells showed sustained global histone acetylation, which is generally associated with active transcription and an undifferentiated proliferative state.

Glaucoma is one of the world's leading causes of blindness, and its management is challenging. The main objective is to lower intraocular pressure through medical, para-surgical, and surgical therapy. Medical therapy often represents the first line of treatment. Although effective in many cases, the eye drops are accompanied by significant problems. They require high patient compliance and can be associated with various side effects, limiting their efficacy. Consequently, the research for new drug delivery systems trying to overcome these limitations is ongoing: numerous devices are developing and gradually entering clinical practice. These new therapeutic options may offer better control of the intraocular pressure, with fewer side effects, and are less dependent on patients' compliance. Hence, the research in this field continues to flourish. This review summarizes the most recent findings in the scientific literature, underlines the role and possible limitations of the new glaucoma drug delivery systems in clinical practice, and recognizes their new horizons and perspectives.

Purpose: To report clinical and imaging features of optic nerve and retinal involvement in a patient with mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) type II B., Methods: A 27-year-old man, diagnosed with MPS type II B and undergoing enzymatic substitution therapy for the past 19 years, was referred to the retina service. An ophthalmological evaluation, which included multimodal imaging, was conducted to investigate potential retinal and optic disc involvement., Results: The eye examination revealed a pigmentary retinopathy with a predominant loss of the outer retinal loss, primarily in the parafoveal and perifoveal regions. Notably, multimodal imaging identified macular edema without any signs of leakage, implying an association between macular edema and retinal neurodegeneration. Additionally, both eyes exhibited an optic disc with blurred margins., Conclusion: We herein describe the multimodal imaging findings of retinal and optic disc involvement in a patient with MPS type II B. Purpose: To report multimodal imaging features of a novel association of non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION), paracentral acute middle maculopathy (PAMM), and cilioretinal artery occlusion (CILRAO)., Methods: A 74-year-old male patient presented complaining of an acute subjective decline in visual acuity in the right eye over the previous days. This patient underwent a comprehensive ophthalmological assessment, including multimodal retinal imaging and visual field test., Results: The eye examination revealed yellowish optic disc edema in the right eye with peripapillary hemorrhages and a whitish lesion extending from the temporal margin of the optic nerve head towards the macula. Multimodal imaging confirmed the diagnosis of NAION in the right eye. Notably, the structural B-scan and en face OCT images revealed hyperreflective areas in the inner and mid retinal layers, indicating an association with CILRAO and PAMM., Conclusion: We herein describe the clinical findings of a previously unreported association among NAION, CILRAO and PAMM., Competing Interests: Conflicts of Interest: None.

Purpose: To assess the intersession repeatability of reading performance measures in patients with previously treated neovascular age-related macular degeneration and good best-corrected visual acuity (≥20/40 Snellen)., Methods: Ninety-one patients (91 eyes) with a diagnosis of previously treated neovascular age-related macular degeneration and good best-corrected visual acuity (≥20/40 Snellen) were prospectively enrolled. Reading performance metrics were assessed using Radner charts, and these measurements were repeated after 7 days to obtain the intersession repeatability. To test repeatability, we calculated the intraclass correlation coefficient, the 95% coefficient of repeatability, and the coefficient of variation for each reading parameter: 1) reading acuity (RA-LogRAD); 2) maximal reading speed-words per minute; 3) RA score (RA score-LogRAD); and 4) critical print size-LogRAD., Results: Mean ± standard deviation best-corrected visual acuity was 0.13 ± 0.01 logMAR [range: 0.00-0.30 logMAR]. The intraclass correlation coefficient values indicated a good reliability for all the analyzed metrics (0.901 for RA; 0.859 for max reading speed; 0.906 for RA score; and 0.868 for critical print size). The coefficient of repeatability was 0.2 LogRAD for RA, 63.2 words per minute for max reading speed, 0.2 LogRAD for RA score, and 0.2 LogRAD for critical print size. Coefficient of variation was 5.5% for RA, 8.9% for max reading speed, 5.8% for RA score, and 6.9% for critical print size., Conclusion: Reading performance metrics are characterized by good values of intersession repeatability in patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration with good best-corrected visual acuity. Our findings may grant the employment of such measures in trials assessing the visual outcome in these patients.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to provide a topographical assessment of macular atrophy in successfully treated neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD) eyes to investigate determinants of monocular reading performance., Methods: A total of 60 participants (60 eyes) with previously treated neovascular AMD and absence of optical coherence tomography (OCT) signs of exudation were enrolled. Reading performance was assessed monocularly using Radner charts. The following variables were obtained: (i) the reading acuity was defined as the logarithm of the reading acuity determination (LogRAD), at the smallest sentence, a patient is able to read in less than 30 seconds; (ii) the maximum reading speed was defined as the fastest time achieved and is calculated in words per minute (wpm). OCT images were reviewed for the presence of macular atrophy within the central, 4 inner and 4 outer Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) grid subfields. Contributory factors affecting reading performance were examined using univariable and multivariable linear mixed model considering reading acuity and reading speed as dependent variables., Results: Median (interquartile range [IQR]) values were 0.53 (IQR = 0.17) LogRAD for reading acuity, and 144 (60) wpm for maximum reading speed. Thirty-five out of 60 (58.3%) eyes were characterized by the presence of macular atrophy. In multiple regression analysis, reading acuity was significantly associated with presence of macular atrophy in the foveal central circle (P = 0.024). Conversely, the maximum reading speed was associated with presence of macular atrophy in the inner-right ETDRS subfield (P = 0.005)., Conclusions: We showed a significant relationship between presence and location of macular atrophy and reading performance in neovascular AMD.

Background: Lenvatinib (LEN) has shown great efficacy but important toxicity in patients with advanced radioactive iodine-refractory (RAI-R) thyroid cancer (TC); a focused evaluation of its impact on patients' quality of life (QoL) is still lacking. Our prospective study investigated the impact of this drug on QoL in a group of RAI-R TC patients treated at our centre., Methods: All patients filled in two questionnaires before and during treatment: (1) the Patient-Reported Outcomes version of the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events adapted questionnaire, assessing prevalence, severity, and/or interference on daily activities of the most frequent symptomatic adverse events (AEs) reported in previous clinical trials during therapy with LEN, and (2) the European Quality of Life 5 Dimensions 3 Levels (EQ-5D-3L) questionnaire, providing the EQ-5D index and the EQ visual analogue scale (EQ-VAS). Data from baseline questionnaires were compared with those obtained 3, 6, and 12 months after the start of treatment., Results: In our population ( n = 20), an overall increased perception of symptomatic AEs emerged during treatment (statistically significant for abdominal pain, asthenia/fatigue, decreased appetite, and xerostomia). The median EQ-5D index and EQ-VAS scores after 3 months of treatment were lower than at baseline, almost returning to initial values after 12 months., Conclusion: RAI-R TC patients reported a general increase in prevalence and interference on daily activities of symptomatic AEs during therapy with LEN. Self-perceived QoL initially decreased during therapy.
