Search

Recent advancements in stellar evolution modeling offer unprecedented accuracy in predicting the evolution and deaths of stars. We present new stellar evolutionary models computed with the updated PARSEC V2.0 code for a comprehensive and homogeneous grid of metallicities and initial masses. Nuclear reaction networks, mass loss prescriptions, and the treatment of elemental mixing have all been updated in PARSEC V2.0. We computed models for thirteen initial metallicities spanning $Z = 10^{-11}$ to $Z = 0.03$, with masses ranging from 2.0 M$_{\odot}$ to 2000 M$_{\odot}$, consisting of a library of over 1,100 ($\sim 2100$ tracks including pure-He models) full stellar evolution tracks. For each track, the evolution is followed from the pre-main-sequence to the most advanced early-asymptotic-giant-branch or the pre-supernova phases, depending on the stellar mass. Here, we describe the properties of the tracks and their chemical and structural evolution. We computed the final fates and the remnant masses and built the mass spectrum for each metallicity, finding that the combined black hole (BH) pair-instability mass gap spans just between 100 and 130 M$_{\odot}$. Moreover, the remnant masses provide models consistent with observed BH masses, such as those from the primaries of GW190521, Cygnus X-1, and $\textit{Gaia}$ BH3 binary systems. We computed and provided the chemical ejecta from stellar winds and explosive final fates, along with the ionizing photon rates. Our results show strong overall consistency with other tracks computed with different codes. A comparison with a large sample of observed massive stars in the Tarantula Nebula of the Large Magellanic Cloud shows that our tracks nicely reproduce the majority of stars that lie on the main sequence. We introduce the LUNA neutron detector array developed for the investigation of the 13C(a,n)16O reaction towards its astrophysical s-process Gamow peak in the low-background environment of the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS). Eighteen 3He counters are arranged in two different configurations (in a vertical and a horizontal orientation) to optimize neutron detection effciency, target handling and target cooling over the investigated energy range Ea;lab = 300 - 400 keV (En = 2.2 - 2.6 MeV in emitted neutron energy). As a result of the deep underground location, the passive shielding of the setup and active background suppression using pulse shape discrimination, we reached a total background rate of 1.23 +- 0.12 counts/hour. This resulted in an improvement of two orders of magnitude over the state of the art allowing a direct measurement of the 13C(a,n)16O cross-section down to Ea;lab = 300 keV. The absolute neutron detection efficiency of the setup was determined using the 51V(p,n)51Cr reaction and an AmBe radioactive source, and completed with a Geant4 simulation. The Local Ultraviolet to Infrared Treasury (LUVIT) is a Hubble Space Telescope program that combines newly acquired data in the near ultraviolet (NUV), optical, and near infrared (NIR) with archival optical and NIR imaging to produce multiband panchromatic resolved stellar catalogs for 23 pointings in 22 low-mass, star-forming galaxies ranging in distance from the outskirts of the Local Group to ~3.8 Mpc. We describe the survey design, detail the LUVIT broadband filter observations and the archival datasets included in the LUVIT reductions, and summarize the simultaneous multiband data reduction steps. The spatial distributions and color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) from the resulting stellar catalogs are presented for each target, from the NUV to the NIR. We demonstrate in which regions of the CMDs stars with NUV and optical, optical and NIR, and NUV through NIR detections reside. For each target, we use the results from artificial star tests to measure representative completeness, bias, and total photometric uncertainty as a function of magnitude in each broadband filter. We also assess which LUVIT targets have significant spatial variation in the fraction of stars recovered at a given magnitude. The JAGB method is a new way of measuring distances with use of AGB stars that are situated in a selected region in a J versus J-Ks CMD, using the fact that the absolute J magnitude is (nearly) constant. It is implicitly assumed in the method that the selected stars are carbon-rich AGB stars. However, as the sample selected to determine M_J is purely colour based there can also be contamination by oxygen-rich AGB stars. As the ratio of C to O-rich stars is known to depend on metallicity and initial mass, the star formation history and age-metallicity relation in a galaxy should influence the value of M_J. The aim of this paper is to look at mixed samples of O- and C-rich stars for the LMC, the SMC and Milky Way (MW), using the Gaia catalogue of long period variables as basis. We report the mean and median magnitudes and the results of fitting Gaussian and Lorentzian profiles to the luminosity function (LF) using different colour and magnitudes cuts. For the SMC and LMC we confirm the previous results in the literature. The LFs of the SMC and LMC JAGB stars are clearly different, yet the mean magnitude inside a selection box can be argued to agree at the 0.02~mag level. The analysis of the MW sample is less straightforward. The contamination by O-rich stars is substantial for a classical lower limit of (J-Ks)0= 1.3, and becomes less than 10% only for (J-Ks)0= 1.5. The sample of AGB stars is much smaller than for the MCs for two reasons. Nearby AGB stars tend to be absent as they saturate in the 2MASS catalogue, and the parallax errors of AGB stars tend to be larger compared to non-AGB stars. The mean and median magnitudes are fainter than for the MC samples by about 0.4~mag which is not predicted by theory. We address the critical need for accurate Rosseland mean gas opacities in high-pressure environments, spanning temperatures from 100 K to 32000 K. Current opacity tables from Wichita State University and AESOPUS 2.0 are limited to $\log(R) \le 1$, where $R=\rho\, T_6^{-3}$ in units of $\mathrm{g}\,\mathrm{cm}^{-3}(10^6\mathrm{K})^{-3}$. This is insufficient for modeling very low-mass stars, brown dwarfs, and planets with atmospheres exhibiting higher densities and pressures ($\log(R) > 1$). Leveraging extensive databases such as ExoMol, ExoMolOP, MoLLIST, and HITEMP, we focus on expanding the AESOPUS opacity calculations to cover a broad range of pressure and density conditions ($-8 \leq \log(R) \leq +6$). We incorporate the thermal Doppler mechanism and micro-turbulence velocity. Pressure broadening effects on molecular transitions, leading to Lorentzian or Voigt profiles, are explored in the context of atmospheric profiles for exoplanets, brown dwarfs, and low-mass stars. We also delve into the impact of electron degeneracy and non-ideal effects such as ionization potential depression under high-density conditions, emphasizing its notable influence on Rosseland mean opacities at temperatures exceeding $10,000$ K. As a result, this study expands AESOPUS public web interface for customized gas chemical mixtures, promoting flexibility in opacity calculations based on specific research needs. Thermohaline mixing is one of the main processes in low-mass red giant stars that affect the transport of chemicals and, thus, the surface abundances along the evolution. The interplay of thermohaline mixing with other processes, such as the downward overshooting from the convective envelope, should be carefully investigated. This study aims to understand the combined effects of thermohaline mixing and envelope overshooting. After implementing the thermohaline mixing process in the \textsc{parsec} stellar evolutionary code, we compute tracks and isochrones (with \textsc{trilegal} code) and compare them with observational data. To constrain the efficiencies of both processes, we perform a detailed modelling that is suitable for globular clusters NGC 6397 and M4. Our results indicate that an envelope overshooting efficiency parameter, $\Lambda_\mathrm{e}=0.6$, and a thermohaline efficiency parameter, $\alpha_\mathrm{th}=50$, are necessary to reproduce the RGB bump magnitudes and lithium abundances observed in these clusters. We find that both envelope overshooting and thermohaline mixing have a significant impact on the variation of $^7$Li abundances. Additionally, we also explore the effects of adopting solar-scaled or $\alpha$-enhanced mixtures on our models. The $^{12}$C and the $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C ratio are also effective indicators to probe extra mixing in RGB stars. The CNO cycle is one of the most important nuclear energy sources in stars. At temperatures of hydrostatic H-burning (20 MK $<$ T $<$ 80 MK) the $^{17}$O(p,$\gamma$)$^{18}$F reaction rate is dominated by the poorly constrained 64.5~keV resonance. Here we report on the first direct measurements of its resonance strength and of the direct capture contribution at 142 keV, performed with a new high sensitivity setup at LUNA. The present resonance strength of $\omega\gamma_{(p, \gamma)}$\textsuperscript{bare} = (30 $\pm$ 6\textsubscript{stat} $\pm$ 2\textsubscript{syst})~peV is about a factor of 2 higher than the values in literature, leading to a $\Gamma$\textsubscript{p}\textsuperscript{bare} = (34 $\pm$ 7\textsubscript{stat} $\pm$ 3\textsubscript{syst})~neV, in agreement with LUNA result from the (p,$\alpha$) channel. Such agreement strengthen our understanding of the oxygen isotopic ratios measured in red giant stars and in O-rich presolar grains.

PLATO (PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars) is ESA's M3 mission designed to detect and characterise extrasolar planets and perform asteroseismic monitoring of a large number of stars. PLATO will detect small planets (down to <2 R_(Earth)) around bright stars (<11 mag), including terrestrial planets in the habitable zone of solar-like stars. With the complement of radial velocity observations from the ground, planets will be characterised for their radius, mass, and age with high accuracy (5 %, 10 %, 10 % for an Earth-Sun combination respectively). PLATO will provide us with a large-scale catalogue of well-characterised small planets up to intermediate orbital periods, relevant for a meaningful comparison to planet formation theories and to better understand planet evolution. It will make possible comparative exoplanetology to place our Solar System planets in a broader context. In parallel, PLATO will study (host) stars using asteroseismology, allowing us to determine the stellar properties with high accuracy, substantially enhancing our knowledge of stellar structure and evolution. The payload instrument consists of 26 cameras with 12cm aperture each. For at least four years, the mission will perform high-precision photometric measurements. Here we review the science objectives, present PLATO's target samples and fields, provide an overview of expected core science performance as well as a description of the instrument and the mission profile at the beginning of the serial production of the flight cameras. PLATO is scheduled for a launch date end 2026. This overview therefore provides a summary of the mission to the community in preparation of the upcoming operational phases.

Stellar convection plays an important role in atmospheric dynamics, wind formation and the mass-loss processes in Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars. However, a direct characterization of convective surface structures in terms of size, contrast, and life-span is quite challenging. Spatially resolving these features requires the highest angular resolution. In this work, we aim at characterizing the size of convective structures on the surface of the O-rich AGB star R Car to test different theoretical predictions, based on mixing-length theory from solar models. We used infrared low-spectral resolution (R~35) interferometric data in the H-band (~1.76 $\mu$m) with the instrument PIONIER at the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) to image the star's surface at two epochs separated by ~6 years. Using a power spectrum analysis, we estimate the horizontal size of the structures on the surface of R Car. The sizes of the stellar disk, at different phases of a pulsation cycle, were obtained using parametric model-fitting in the Fourier domain. Our analysis supports that the sizes of the structures in R Car are correlated with variations of the pressure scale height in the atmosphere of the target, as predicted by theoretical models based on solar convective processes. We observe that these structures grow in size when the star expands within a pulsation cycle. While the information is still scarce, this observational finding highlights the role of convection in the dynamics of those objects. Ca-Al-rich inclusions (CAIs) are the oldest dated solid materials in the solar system, found as light-coloured crystalline ingredients in meteorites. Their formation time is commonly associated with age zero of the Solar System. Yet, the physical and chemical processes that once led to the formation of these sub-millimetre to centimetre-sized mineral particles in the early solar nebula are still a matter of debate. This paper proposes a pathway to form such inclusions during the earliest phases of disc evolution. We combine 1D viscous disc evolutionary models with 2D radiative transfer, equilibrium condensation, and new dust opacity calculations. We show that the viscous heating associated with the high accretion rates in the earliest evolutionary phases causes the midplane inside of about 0.5 au to heat up to limiting temperatures of about 1500-1700 K, but no further. These high temperatures force all refractory material components of the inherited interstellar dust grains to sublimate - except for a few Al-Ca-Ti oxides such as Al2O3, Ca2Al2SiO7, and CaTiO3. Once the Mg-Fe silicates are gone, the dust becomes more transparent and the heat is more efficiently transported to the disc surface, which prevents any further warm-up. This thermostat mechanism keeps these minerals above their annealing temperature for hundreds of thousands of years, which creates large, pure and crystalline particles. These particles are dragged out by the viscously spreading disc. Beyond about 0.5 au, the silicates re-condense on the Ca-Al-rich particles, adding an amorphous silicate matrix. We estimate that this mechanism to produce CAIs works during the first 50000 years of disc evolution. These particles then continue to move outward and populate the entire disc up to radii of about 50 au, before, eventually, the accretion rate subsides, the disc cools, and the particles start to drift inwards., Comment: accepted by Astronomy & Astrophysics, 17 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables

We present NIRCam and NIRISS modules for DOLPHOT, a widely-used crowded field stellar photometry package. We describe details of the modules including pixel masking, astrometric alignment, star finding, photometry, catalog creation, and artificial star tests (ASTs). We tested these modules using NIRCam and NIRISS images of M92 (a Milky Way globular cluster), Draco II (an ultra-faint dwarf galaxy), and WLM (a star-forming dwarf galaxy). DOLPHOT's photometry is highly precise and the color-magnitude diagrams are deeper and have better definition than anticipated during original program design in 2017. The primary systematic uncertainties in DOLPHOT's photometry arise from mismatches in the model and observed point spread functions (PSFs) and aperture corrections, each contributing $\lesssim0.01$ mag to the photometric error budget. Version 1.2 of WebbPSF models, which include charge diffusion and interpixel capacitance effects, significantly reduced PSF-related uncertainties. We also observed minor ($\lesssim0.05$ mag) chip-to-chip variations in NIRCam's zero points, which will be addressed by the JWST flux calibration program. Globular cluster observations are crucial for photometric calibration. Temporal variations in the photometry are generally $\lesssim0.01$ mag, although rare large misalignment events can introduce errors up to 0.08 mag. We provide recommended DOLPHOT parameters, guidelines for photometric reduction, and advice for improved observing strategies. We present an investigation of evolved stars in the nearby star-forming galaxy WLM, using NIRCam imaging from the JWST resolved stellar populations early-release science (ERS) program. We find that various combinations of the F090W, F150W, F250M, and F430M filters can effectively isolate red supergiants (RSGs) and thermally-pulsing asymptotic giant branch (TP-AGB) stars from one another, while also providing a reasonable separation of the primary TP-AGB subtypes: carbon-rich C-type stars and oxygen-rich M-type stars. The classification scheme we present here agrees very well with the well-established Hubble Space Telescope (HST) medium-band filter technique. The ratio of C to M-type stars (C/M) is 0.8$\pm$0.1 for both the new JWST and the HST classifications, which is within one sigma of empirical predictions from optical narrow-band CN and TiO filters. The evolved star colors show good agreement with the predictions from the PARSEC$+$COLIBRI stellar evolutionary models, and the models indicate a strong metallicity dependence that makes stellar identification even more effective at higher metallicity. However, the models also indicate that evolved star identification with NIRCam may be more difficult at lower metallicies. We test every combination of NIRCam filters using the models and present additional filters that are also useful for evolved star studies. We also find that $\approx$90\% of the dusty evolved stars are carbon-rich, suggesting that carbonaceous dust dominates the present-day dust production in WLM, similar to the findings in the Magellanic Clouds. The initial-final mass relation (IFMR) plays a crucial role in understanding stellar structure and evolution by linking a star's initial mass to the mass of the resulting white dwarf. This study explores the IFMR in the initial mass range $0.8 \leq M_\mathrm{ini} / M_\odot \leq 4$ using full PARSEC evolutionary calculations supplemented with COLIBRI computations to complete the ejection of the envelope and obtain the final core mass. Recent works have shown that the supposed monotonicity of the IFMR is interrupted by a kink in the initial mass range $M_\mathrm{ini} \approx 1.65-2.10 M_\odot$, due to the interaction between recurrent dredge-up episodes and stellar winds in carbon stars evolving on the thermally-pulsing asymptotic giant branch phase. To reproduce the IFMR non-monotonic behavior we investigate the role of convective overshooting efficiency applied to the base of the convective envelope ($f_\mathrm{env}$) and to the borders of the pulse-driven convective zone ($f_\mathrm{pdcz}$), as well as its interplay with mass loss. We compare our models to observational data and find that $f_\mathrm{env}$ must vary with initial mass in order to accurately reproduce the IFMR's observed kink and slopes. We find some degeneracy between the overshooting parameters when only the IFMR information is used. We calculate new evolutionary models of rotating primordial very massive stars, with initial mass from $100\,M_{\odot}$ to $200\,M_{\odot}$, for two values of the initial metallicity ${Z=0}$ and ${Z=0.0002}$. For the first time in this mass range, we consider stellar rotation and pulsation-driven mass loss, along with radiative winds. The models evolve from the zero-age main sequence, until the onset of pair instability. We discuss the main properties of the models during their evolution and then focus on the final fate and the possible progenitors of jet-driven events. All tracks that undergo pulsational-pair instability produce successful gamma-ray bursts (GRB) in the collapsar framework, while those that collapse directly to black holes (BH) produce jet-driven supernova events. In these latter cases, the expected black hole mass changes due to the jet propagation inside the progenitor, resulting in different models that should produce BH within the pair-instability black-hole mass gap. Successful GRBs predicted here from zero-metallicity and very metal-poor progenitors may be bright enough to be detected even up to redshift ${\sim20}$ using current telescopes such as the Swift-BAT X-ray detector and the JWST., Comment: Published in ApJ, 23 pages, 12 figures

The $\mathrm{^{20}Ne(p, \gamma)^{21}Na}$ reaction is the slowest in the NeNa cycle and directly affects the abundances of the Ne and Na isotopes in a variety of astrophysical sites. Here we report the measurement of its direct capture contribution, for the first time below $E\rm_{cm} = 352$~keV, and of the contribution from the $E^{\rm }_{cm} = 368$~keV resonance, which dominates the reaction rate at $T=0.03-1.00$~GK. The experiment was performed deep underground at the Laboratory for Underground Nuclear Astrophysics, using a high-intensity proton beam and a windowless neon gas target. Prompt $\gamma$ rays from the reaction were detected with two high-purity germanium detectors. We obtain a resonance strength $\omega \gamma~=~(0.112 \pm 0.002_{\rm stat}~\pm~0.005_{\rm sys})$~meV, with an uncertainty a factor of $3$ smaller than previous values. Our revised reaction rate is 20\% lower than previously adopted at $T < 0.1$~GK and agrees with previous estimates at temperatures $T \geq 0.1$~GK. In this study we compute the equation of state and Rosseland mean opacity from temperatures of T~30000 K down to T~400 K, pushing the capabilities of the AESOPUS code (Marigo et al., 2022; Marigo & Aringer, 2009) into the regime where solid grains can form. The GGchem code (Woitke et al. 2018) is used to solve the chemistry for temperatures less than ~3000 K. Atoms, molecules, and dust grains in thermodynamic equilibrium are all included in the equation of state. To incorporate monochromatic atomic and molecular cross sections, an optimized opacity sampling technique is used. The Mie theory is employed to calculate the opacity of 43 grain species. Tables of Rosseland mean opacities for scaled-solar compositions are provided. Starting from the Gaia DR3 HR diagram, we derive the star formation history (SFH) as a function of distance from the Galactic Plane within a cylinder centred on the Sun with a 200~pc radius and spanning 1.3~kpc above and below the Galaxy's midplane. We quantify both the concentration of the more recent star formation in the Galactic Plane, and the age-related increase in the scale height of the Galactic Disc stellar component, which is well-described by power-laws with indices ranging from $1/2$ to $2/3$. The vertically-integrated star formation rate falls from $(1.147 \pm 0.039)\times10^{-8}\, \text{M}_{\odot} \text{yr}^{-1} \text{pc}^{-2}$ at earlier times down to $(6.2 \pm 3.0) \times10^{-9}\, \text{M}_{\odot} \text{yr}^{-1} \text{pc}^{-2}$ at present times, but we find a significant peak of star formation in the 2 to 3 Gyr age bin. The total mass of stars formed per unit area over time is $118.7 \pm 6.2\, \text{M}_{\odot} \text{pc}^{-2}$, which is nearly twice the present stellar mass derived from kinematics within 1~kpc from the Galactic Plane, implying a high degree of matter recycling in successive generations of stars. The method is then modified by adopting an age-dependent correlation between the SFH across the different slices, which results in less noisy and more symmetrical results without significantly changing the previously mentioned quantities. The ${}^{12}\mathrm{C}/{}^{13}\mathrm{C}$ ratio is a significant indicator of nucleosynthesis and mixing processes during hydrogen burning in stars. Its value mainly depends on the relative rates of the ${}^{12}\mathrm{C}(p,\gamma){}^{13}\mathrm{N}$ and ${}^{13}\mathrm{C}(p,\gamma){}^{14}\mathrm{N}$ reactions. Both reactions have been studied at the Laboratory for Underground Nuclear Astrophysics (LUNA) in Italy down to the lowest energies to date ($E_\mathrm{c.m.} = 60\,\mathrm{keV}$) reaching for the first time the high energy tail of hydrogen burning in the shell of giant stars. Our cross sections, obtained with both prompt $\gamma$-ray detection and activation measurements, are the most precise to date with overall systematic uncertainties of $7-8\%$. Compared with most of the literature, our results are systematically lower, by $25\%$ for the ${}^{12}\mathrm{C}(p,\gamma){}^{13}\mathrm{N}$ reaction and by $30\%$ for ${}^{13}\mathrm{C}(p,\gamma){}^{14}\mathrm{N}$. We provide the most precise value up to now of $(3.6 \pm 0.4)$ in the $20-140\,\mathrm{MK}$ range for the lowest possible ${}^{12}\mathrm{C}/{}^{13}\mathrm{C}$ ratio that can be produced during H burning in giant stars., Comment: Submitted to Phys. The Chinese Space Station Telescope (CSST) is a cutting-edge two-meter astronomical space telescope currently under construction. Its primary Survey Camera (SC) is designed to conduct large-area imaging sky surveys using a sophisticated seven-band photometric system. The resulting data will provide unprecedented data for studying the structure and stellar populations of the Milky Way. To support the CSST development and scientific projects related to its survey data, we generate the first comprehensive Milky Way stellar mock catalogue for the CSST SC photometric system using the TRILEGAL stellar population synthesis tool. The catalogue includes approximately 12.6 billion stars, covering a wide range of stellar parameters, photometry, astrometry, and kinematics, with magnitude reaching down to $g\,=\,27.5$ mag in the AB magnitude system. The catalogue represents our benchmark understanding of the stellar populations in the Milky Way, enabling a direct comparison with the future CSST survey data. Particularly, it sheds light on faint stars that are hidden from current sky surveys. Our crowding limit analysis based on this catalogue provides compelling evidence for the extension of the CSST Optical Survey (OS) to cover low Galactic latitude regions. We present the JWST Resolved Stellar Populations Early Release Science (ERS) science program. We obtained 27.5 hours of NIRCam and NIRISS imaging of three targets in the Local Group (Milky Way globular cluster M92, ultra-faint dwarf galaxy Draco II, star-forming dwarf galaxy WLM), which span factors of $\sim10^5$ in luminosity, $\sim10^4$ in distance, and $\sim10^5$ in surface brightness. We describe the survey strategy, scientific and technical goals, implementation details, present select NIRCam color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs), and validate the NIRCam exposure time calculator (ETC). Our CMDs are among the deepest in existence for each class of target. They touch the theoretical hydrogen burning limit in M92 ($<0.08$ $M_{\odot}$; SNR $\sim5$ at $m_{F090W}\sim28.2$; $M_{F090W}\sim+13.6$), include the lowest-mass stars observed outside the Milky Way in Draco II (0.09 $M_{\odot}$; SNR $=10$ at $m_{F090W}\sim29$; $M_{F090W}\sim+12.1$), and reach $\sim1.5$ magnitudes below the oldest main sequence turnoff in WLM (SNR $=10$ at $m_{F090W}\sim29.5$; $M_{F090W}\sim+4.6$). The PARSEC stellar models provide a good qualitative match to the NIRCam CMDs, though are $\sim0.05$ mag too blue compared to M92 F090W$-$F150W data. The NIRCam ETC (v2.0) matches the SNRs based on photon noise from DOLPHOT stellar photometry in uncrowded fields, but the ETC may not be accurate in more crowded fields, similar to what is known for HST. We release beta versions of DOLPHOT NIRCam and NIRISS modules to the community. We present new evolutionary models of primordial very massive stars, with initial masses ranging from $100\,\mathrm{{M}_{\odot}}$ to $1000\,\mathrm{{M}_{\odot}}$, that extend from the main sequence until the onset of dynamical instability caused by the creation of electron-positron pairs during core C, Ne, or O burning, depending on the star's mass and metallicity. Mass loss accounts for radiation-driven winds as well as pulsation-driven mass-loss on the main sequence and during the red supergiant phase. After examining the evolutionary properties, we focus on the final outcome of the models and associated compact remnants. Stars that avoid the pair-instability supernova channel, should produce black holes with masses ranging from $\approx 40\, \mathrm{{M}_{\odot}}$ to $\approx 1000\,\mathrm{{M}_{\odot}}$. In particular, stars with initial masses of about $100\,\mathrm{{M}_{\odot}}$ could leave black holes of $\simeq 85-90\, \mathrm{{M}_{\odot}}$, values consistent with the estimated primary black hole mass of the GW190521 merger event. Overall, these results may contribute to explain future data from next-generation gravitational-wave detectors, such as the Einstein Telescope and Cosmic Explorer, which will have access to as-yet unexplored BH mass range of $\approx 10^2-10^4\,\mathrm{{M}_{\odot}}$ in the early universe., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures; zenodo link for wind ejecta tables

We characterize massive stars (M>8 M_sun) in the nearby (D~0.8 Mpc) extremely metal-poor (Z~5% Z_sun) galaxy Leo A using Hubble Space Telescope ultra-violet (UV), optical, and near-infrared (NIR) imaging along with Keck/LRIS and MMT/Binospec optical spectroscopy for 18 main sequence OB stars. We find that: (a) 12 of our 18 stars show emission lines, despite not being associated with an H II region, suggestive of stellar activity (e.g., mass loss, accretion, binary star interaction), which is consistent with previous predictions of enhanced activity at low metallicity; (b) 6 are Be stars, which are the first to be spectroscopically studied at such low metallicity -- these Be stars have unusual panchromatic SEDs; (c) for stars well-fit by the TLUSTY non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (non-LTE) models, the photometric and spectroscopic values of T_eff and log(g) agree to within ~0.01 dex and ~0.18 dex, respectively, indicating that NUV/optical/NIR imaging can be used to reliably characterize massive (M ~ 8-30 M_sun) main sequence star properties relative to optical spectroscopy; (d) the properties of the most massive stars in H II regions are consistent with constraints from previous nebular emission line studies; and (e) 13 stars with M>8 M_sun are >40 pc from a known star cluster or H II region. This work introduces new low-temperature gas opacities, in the range 3.2 <= log(T/K) <= 4.5, computed with the AESOPUS code under the assumption of thermodynamic equilibrium (Marigo &_Aringer_2009). In comparison to the previous version AESOPUS 1.0, we updated and expanded molecular absorption to include 80 species, mostly using the recommended line lists currently available from the ExoMol and HITRAN databases. Furthermore, in light of a recent study, we revised the H- photodetachment cross section, added the free-free absorption of other negative ions of atoms and molecules, and updated the collision-induced absorption due to H2/H2, H2/H, H2/He, and H/He pairs. Using the new input physics, we computed tables of Rosseland mean opacities for several scaled-solar chemical compositions, including Magg et al. (2022)'s most recent one, as well as alpha-enhanced mixtures. The differences in opacity between the new AESOPUS 2.0 and the original AESOPUS 1.0 versions, as well as other sets of calculations, are discussed. The new opacities are released to the community via a dedicated web-page that includes both pre-computed tables for widely used chemical compositions, and a web-interface for calculating opacities on-the-fly for any abundance distribution., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. In stars, the fusion of $^{22}$Ne and $^4$He may produce either $^{25}$Mg, with the emission of a neutron, or $^{26}$Mg and a $\gamma$ ray. At high temperature, the ($\alpha,n$) channel dominates, while at low temperature, it is energetically hampered. The rate of its competitor, the $^{22}$Ne($\alpha$,$\gamma$)$^{26}$Mg reaction, and, hence, the minimum temperature for the ($\alpha,n$) dominance, are controlled by many nuclear resonances. The strengths of these resonances have hitherto been studied only indirectly. The present work aims to directly measure the total strength of the resonance at $E$_{r}$\,=\,$334$\,$keV (corresponding to $E$_{x}$\,=\,$10949$\,$keV in $^{26}$Mg). The data reported here have been obtained using high intensity $^4$He$^+$ beam from the INFN LUNA 400 kV underground accelerator, a windowless, recirculating, 99.9% isotopically enriched $^{22}$Ne gas target, and a 4$\pi$ bismuth germanate summing $\gamma$-ray detector. The ultra-low background rate of less than 0.5 counts/day was determined using 67 days of no-beam data and 7 days of $^4$He$^+$ beam on an inert argon target. The new high-sensitivity setup allowed to determine the first direct upper limit of 4.0$\,\times\,$10$^{-11}$ eV (at 90% confidence level) for the resonance strength. Finally, the sensitivity of this setup paves the way to study further $^{22}$Ne($\alpha$,$\gamma$)$^{26}$Mg resonances at higher energy., Comment: Submitted to Eur. Phys. J. A

We describe a large simulation of the stars to be observed by the Vera C. Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST). The simulation is based on the TRILEGAL code, which resorts to large databases of stellar evolutionary tracks, synthetic spectra, and pulsation models, added to simple prescriptions for the stellar density and star formation histories of the main structures of the Galaxy, to generate mock stellar samples through a population synthesis approach. The main bodies of the Magellanic Clouds are also included. A complete simulation is provided for single stars, down to the $r=27.5$ mag depth of the co-added wide-fast-deep survey images. A second simulation is provided for a fraction of the binaries, including the interacting ones, as derived with the BinaPSE module of TRILEGAL. We illustrate the main properties and numbers derived from these simulations, including: comparisons with real star counts; the expected numbers of Cepheids, long-period variables and eclipsing binaries; the crowding limits as a function of seeing and filter; the star-to-galaxy ratios, etc. Complete catalogs are accessible through the NOIRLab Astro Data Lab, while the stellar density maps are incorporated in the LSST metrics analysis framework (MAF)., Comment: Accepted for publication in the LSST focused ApJS issue

We present a new comprehensive collection of stellar evolutionary tracks and isochrones for rotating low- and intermediate-mass stars assembled with the updated version of PARSEC V2.0. This version includes our recent calibration of the extra mixing from overshooting and rotation, as well as several improvements in nuclear reaction network, treatment of convective zones, mass loss and other physical input parameters. The initial mass of the stellar models covers the range from 0.09 $M_\odot$ to 14 $M_\odot$, for six sets of initial metallicity, from Z=0.004 to Z=0.017. Rotation is considered for stars above $\sim 1 M_\odot$ with a smooth transition between non rotating and extremely fast-rotating models, based on the initial mass. For stars more massive than $\sim 1.3~M_\odot$ the full rotation range, from low to the critical one, is considered. We adopt the solar-scaled chemical mixture by Caffau et al. with Z$_\odot$ = 0.01524. All the evolutionary phases from the pre-main-sequence to the first few thermal-pulses on the asymptotic-giant-branch or central C exhaustion, are considered. The corresponding theoretical isochrones are further derived with TRILEGAL code and are converted in several photometric systems, taking into account different inclination angles. Besides magnitudes, they also offer many other stellar observables in line with the data that are being provided by current large surveys. In recent observations of extremely metal-poor low-mass starburst galaxies, almost solar Fe/O ratios are reported, despite N/O ratios consistent with the low metallicity. We investigate if the peculiar Fe/O ratios can be a distinctive signature of an early enrichment produced by very massive objects dying as Pair-Instability Supernovae (PISN). We run chemical evolution models with yields that account for the contribution by PISN. We use both the recent non-rotating stellar yields from Goswami et al. 2021, and new yields from rotating very massive stars calculated on purpose in this work. We also search for the best initial mass function (IMF) that is able to reproduce the observations. We can reproduce the observations by adopting a bi-modal IMF and by including an initial burst of rotating very massive stars. Only with a burst of very massive stars can we reproduce the almost solar Fe/O ratios at the estimated young ages. We also confirm that rotation is absolutely needed to concomitantly reproduce the observed N/O ratios. These results stress the importance of very massive stars in galactic chemical evolution studies and strongly support a top-heavy initial mass function in the very early evolutionary stages of metal poor starburst galaxies., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

The initial mass-final mass relationship (IFMR) of white dwarfs (WD) represents a crucial benchmark for stellar evolution models, especially for the efficiency of mixing episodes and mass loss during the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) phase. In this study, we argue that such relation offers the opportunity of constraining the third dredge-up (3DU), with important consequences for chemical yields. The results are discussed in light of recent studies that have identified a kink in the IFMR for initial masses close to $2\,M_{\odot}$. Adopting a physically-sound approach in which the efficiency $\lambda$ of the 3DU varies as a function of core and envelope masses, we calibrate $\lambda$ in solar-metallicity TP-AGB models in order to reproduce the final masses of their WD progeny, over a the range of initial masses $0.9 \le M_{\rm i}/M_{\odot} \le 6$. In particular, we find that in low-mass stars with $1.4 \le M_{\rm i}/M_{\odot} \le 2.0$ the efficiency is small, $\lambda \le 0.3$, it steeply rises to about $\lambda \simeq 0.65$ in intermediate-mass stars with $2.0 \le M_{\rm i}/M_{\odot} \le 4.0$, and then it drops in massive TP-AGB stars with $4.0 \le M_{\rm i}/M_{\odot} \le 6.0$. Our study also suggests that a second kink may show up in the IFMR at the transition between the most massive carbon stars and those that are dominated by hot-bottom burning., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures. Benefiting from the GAIA second and early third releases of photometric and astrometric data we examine the population of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars that appear in the fields of intermediate-age and young open star clusters. We identify 49 AGB star candidates, brighter than the tip of the red giant branch, with a good-to-high cluster membership probability. Among them we find 19 TP-AGB stars with known spectral type: 4 M stars, 3 MS/S stars and 12 C stars. By combining observations, stellar models, and radiative transfer calculations that include the effect of circumstellar dust, we characterize each star in terms of initial mass, luminosity, mass-loss rate, core mass, period and mode of pulsation. The information collected helps us shed light on the TP-AGB evolution at solar-like metallicity, placing constraints on the third dredge-up process, the initial masses of carbon stars, stellar winds, and the initial-final mass relation (IFMR). In particular, we find that two bright carbon stars, MSB 75 and BM IV 90, members of the clusters NGC 7789 and NGC 2660 (with similar ages of $\simeq 1.2-1.6$ Gyr and initial masses $ 2.1 \ge M_{\rm i}/M_{\odot} \ge 1.9$), have unusually high core masses, $M_{\rm c} \approx 0.67-0.7\,M_{\odot}$. These results support the findings of a recent work (Marigo et al. 2020) that identified a kink in the IFMR, which interrupts its monotonic trend just at the same initial masses. Finally, we investigate two competing scenarios to explain the $M_{\rm c}$ data: the role of stellar winds in single-star evolution, and binary interactions through the blue-straggler channel., Comment: Article accepted for publication in ApJS (46 pages, 11 figures, 10 tables)

One of the main neutron sources for the astrophysical s-process is the reaction 13C({\alpha},n)16O, taking place in thermally pulsing Asymptotic Giant Branch stars at temperatures around 90 MK. To model the nucleosynthesis during this process the reaction cross section needs to be known in the 150-230keV energy window (Gamow peak). At these sub-Coulomb energies cross section direct measurements are severely affected by the low event rate, making us rely on input from indirect methods and extrapolations from higher-energy direct data. This leads to an uncertainty in the cross section at the relevant energies too high to reliably constrain the nuclear physics input to s-process calculations. We present the results from a new deep-underground measurement of 13C({\alpha},n)16O, covering the energy range 230-300keV, with drastically reduced uncertainties over previous measurements and for the first time providing data directly inside the s-process Gamow peak. Selected stellar models have been computed to estimate the impact of our revised reaction rate. For stars of nearly solar composition, we find sizeable variations of some isotopes, whose production is influenced by the activation of close-by branching points that are sensitive to the neutron density, in particular the two radioactive nuclei 60Fe and 205Pb, as well as 152Gd, Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, accepted on PRL on 17th August 2021

We derive the spatially-resolved star formation history (SFH) for a $96$ deg$^2$ area across the main body of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), using the near-infrared photometry from the VISTA survey of the Magellanic Clouds (VMC). The data and analyses are characterised by a great degree of homogeneity and a low sensitivity to the interstellar extinction. 756 subregions of size $0.125$ deg$^2$ -- corresponding to projected sizes of about $296\times322\,\mathrm{pc}^{2}$ in the LMC -- are analysed. The resulting SFH maps, with typical resolution of $0.2$--$0.3$ dex in logarithm of age, reveal main features in the LMC disc at different ages: the patchy star formation at recent ages, the concentration of star formation on three spiral arms and on the Bar up to ages of $\sim\!1.6$ Gyr, and the wider and smoother distribution of older populations. The period of most intense star formation occurred roughly between 4 and 0.5 Gyr ago, at rates of $\sim\!0.3\,\mathrm{M}_{\odot}\mathrm{yr}^{-1}$. We compare young and old star formation rates with the observed numbers of RR Lyrae and Cepheids. We also derive a mean extinction and mean distance for every subregion, and the plane that best describes the spatial distribution of the mean distances. Our results cover an area about 50 per cent larger than the classical SFH maps derived from optical data by Harris & Zaritsky (2009). Main differences with respect to those maps are lower star formation rates at young ages, and a main peak of star formation being identified at ages slightly younger than $1$ Gyr., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We analyse the high-quality Hertzsprung-Russell diagram (HRD) derived from Gaia data release 2 for the Solar Neighbourhood. We start building an almost-complete sample within 200 pc and for |b|>25 deg, so as to limit the impact of known errors and artefacts in the Gaia catalog. Particular effort is then put into improving the modelling of population of binaries, which produce two marked features in the HRD: the sequence of near-equal mass binaries along the lower main sequence, and the isolated group of hot subdwarfs. We describe a new tool, BinaPSE, to follow the evolution of interacting binaries in a way that improves the consistency with PARSEC evolutionary tracks for single stars. BinaPSE is implemented into the TRILEGAL code for the generation of "partial models" for both single and binary stellar populations, taking into account the presence of resolved and unresolved binaries. We then fit the Gaia HRD via MCMC methods that search for the star formation history (SFH) and initial binary fraction (by mass) that maximise the likelihood. The main results are (i) the binary fraction derived from the lower main sequence is close to 0.4, while twice larger values are favoured when the upper part of the HRD is fitted; (ii) present models predict the observed numbers of hot subdwarfs to within a factor of 2; (iii) irrespective of the prescription for the binaries, the star formation rate peaks at values 1.5e-4 Msun/yr at ages slightly above 2 Gyr, and then decreases to 0.8e-4 Msun/yr at very old ages., Comment: resubmitted to MNRAS after final minor changes requested by referee

There is mounting evidence that the stellar initial mass function (IMF) could extend much beyond the canonical Mi ~100, Msun limit, but the impact of such hypothesis on the chemical enrichment of galaxies still remains to be clarified. We aim to address this question by analysing the observed abundances of thin- and thick-disc stars in the Milky Way with chemical evolution models that account for the contribution of very massive stars dying as pair-instability supernovae. We built new sets of chemical yields from massive and very massive stars up to Mi ~ 350 Msun, by combining the wind ejecta extracted from our hydrostatic stellar evolution models with explosion ejecta from the literature. Using a simple chemical evolution code we analyse the effects of adopting different yield tables by comparing predictions against observations of stars in the solar vicinity. After several tests, we focus on the [O/Fe] ratio which best separates the chemical patterns of the two Milky Way components. We find that with a standard IMF, truncated at Mi ~ 100 Msun, we can reproduce various observational constraints for thin-disc stars, but the same IMF fails to account for the [O/Fe] ratios of thick-disc stars. The best results are obtained by extending the IMF up to Mi = 350 Msun and including the chemical ejecta of very massive stars, in the form of winds and pair-instability supernova explosions.Our study indicates that PISN played a significant role in shaping the chemical evolution of the Milky Way thick disc. By including their chemical yields it is easier to reproduce not only the level of the alpha-enhancement but also the observed slope of thick-disc stars in the [O/Fe] vs [Fe/H] diagram. Long-period variability in luminous red giants has several promising applications, all of which require models able to accurately predict pulsation periods. Linear pulsation models have proven successful in reproducing the observed periods of overtone modes in evolved red giants, but they fail to accurately predict their fundamental mode periods. Here, we use a 1D hydrodynamic code to investigate the long-period variability of M-type asymptotic giant branch stars in the nonlinear regime. We examine the period and stability of low-order radial pulsation modes as a function of mass and radius, and find overtone mode periods in complete agreement with predictions from linear pulsation models. In contrast, nonlinear models predict an earlier onset of dominant fundamental mode pulsation, and shorter periods at large radii. Both features lead to a substantially better agreement with observations, that we verify against OGLE and Gaia data for the Magellanic Clouds. We provide simple analytic relations describing the nonlinear fundamental mode period-mass-radius relation. Differences with respect to linear predictions originate from the readjustment of the envelope structure induced by large-amplitude pulsation. We investigate the impact of turbulent viscosity on linear and nonlinear pulsation, and probe possible effects of varying metallicity and carbon abundance., Comment: 18 pages, 17 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS

Pair-instability (PI) is expected to open a gap in the mass spectrum of black holes (BHs) between $\approx{}40-65$ M$_\odot$ and $\approx{}120$ M$_\odot$. The existence of the mass gap is currently being challenged by the detection of GW190521, with a primary component mass of $85^{+21}_{-14}$ M$_{\odot}$. Here, we investigate the main uncertainties on the PI mass gap: the $^{12}$C($\alpha$, $\gamma$)$^{16}$O reaction rate and the H-rich envelope collapse. With the standard $^{12}$C($\alpha$, $\gamma$)$^{16}$O rate, the lower edge of the mass gap can be 70 M$_\odot$ if we allow for the collapse of the residual H-rich envelope at metallicity $Z\leq{}0.0003$. Adopting the uncertainties given by the STARLIB database, for models computed with the $^{12}$C($\alpha$, $\gamma$)$^{16}$O rate $-1\, \sigma$, we find that the PI mass gap ranges between $\approx{}80$ M$_\odot$ and $\approx{}150$ M$_\odot$. Stars with $M_{\rm ZAMS}>110$ M$_\odot$ may experience a deep dredge-up episode during the core helium-burning phase, that extracts matter from the core enriching the envelope. As a consequence of the He-core mass reduction, a star with $M_{\rm ZAMS} =160$ M$_\odot$ may avoid the PI and produce a BH of 150 M$_\odot$. In the $-2\,{}\sigma{}$ case, the PI mass gap ranges from 92 M$_\odot$ to 110 M$_\odot$. Finally, in models computed with $^{12}$C($\alpha$, $\gamma$)$^{16}$O $-3\,{}\sigma{}$, the mass gap is completely removed by the dredge-up effect. The onset of this dredge-up is particularly sensitive to the assumed model for convection and mixing. The combined effect of H-rich envelope collapse and low $^{12}$C($\alpha$, $\gamma$)$^{16}$O rate can lead to the formation of BHs with masses consistent with the primary component of GW190521., Comment: 20 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Reliable models of the thermally pulsing asymptotic giant branch (TP-AGB) phase are of critical importance across astrophysics, including our interpretation of the spectral energy distribution of galaxies, cosmic dust production, and enrichment of the interstellar medium. With the aim of improving sets of stellar isochrones that include a detailed description of the TP-AGB phase, we extend our recent calibration of the AGB population in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) to the more metal rich Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We model the LMC stellar populations with the TRILEGAL code, using the spatially-resolved star formation history derived from the VISTA survey. We characterize the efficiency of the third dredge-up by matching the star counts and the $K_{\rm s}$-band luminosity functions of the AGB stars identified in the LMC. In line with previous findings, we confirm that, compared to the SMC, the third dredge-up in AGB stars of the LMC is somewhat less efficient, as a consequence of the higher metallicity. The predicted range of initial mass of C-rich stars is between $M_{\rm i} \approx 1.7 - 3~\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$ at $Z_{\rm i} = 0.008$. We show how the inclusion of new opacity data in the carbon star spectra will improve the performance of our models. We discuss the predicted lifetimes, integrated luminosities and mass-loss rate distributions of the calibrated models. The presence of AGB stars in clusters provides key constraints for stellar models, as has been demonstrated with historical data from the Magellanic Clouds. In this work, we look for candidate AGB stars in M31 star clusters from the Panchromatic Hubble Andromeda Treasury (PHAT) survey. Our photometric criteria selects stars brighter than the tip of the red giant branch, which includes the bulk of the thermally-pulsing AGB stars as well as early-AGB stars and other luminous cool giants expected in young stellar populations (e.g. massive red supergiants, and intermediate-mass red helium-burning stars). The AGB stars can be differentiated, a posteriori, using the ages already estimated for our cluster sample. 937 candidates are found within the cluster aperture radii, half (450) of which are very likely cluster members. Cross-matching with additional databases reveals two carbon stars and ten secure variables among them. The field-corrected age distribution reveals the presence of young supergiants peaking at ages smaller than 100 Myr, followed by a long tail of AGB stars extending up to the oldest possible ages. This long tail reveals the general decrease in the numbers of AGB stars from initial values of 50e-6/Msun at 100 Myr down to 5e-6/Msun at 10 Gyr. Theoretical models of near-solar metallicity reproduce this general trend, although with localized discrepancies over some age intervals, whose origin is not yet identified. The initial-final mass relation (IFMR) links the birth mass of a star to the mass of the compact remnant left at its death. While the relevance of the IFMR across astrophysics is universally acknowledged, not all of its fine details have yet been resolved. A new analysis of a few carbon-oxygen white dwarfs in old open clusters of the Milky Way led us to identify a kink in the IFMR, located over a range of initial masses, $1.65 \lesssim M_{\rm i}/M_{\odot} \lesssim 2.10$. The kink's peak in WD mass of $\approx 0.70-0.75 \, M_{\odot}$ is produced by stars with $M_{\rm i} \simeq 1.8 - 1.9 \, M_{\odot}$, corresponding to ages of about $1.8 - 1.7 $ Gyr. Interestingly, this peak coincides with the initial mass limit between low-mass stars that develop a degenerate helium core after central hydrogen exhaustion, and intermediate-mass stars that avoid electron degeneracy. We interpret the IFMR kink as the signature of carbon star formation in the Milky Way. Among the reactions involved in the production and destruction of deuterium during Big Bang Nucleosynthesis, the deuterium-burning D(p,gamma)3He reaction has the largest uncertainty and limits the precision of theoretical estimates of primordial deuterium abundance. Here we report the results of a careful commissioning of the experimental setup used to measure the cross-section of the D(p,gamma)3He reaction at the Laboratory for Underground Nuclear Astrophysics of the Gran Sasso Laboratory (Italy). The commissioning was aimed at minimising all sources of systematic uncertainty in the measured cross sections. Direct measurements of reaction cross-sections at astrophysical energies often require the use of solid targets able to withstand high ion beam currents for extended periods of time. Thus, monitoring target thickness, isotopic composition, and target stoichiometry during data taking is critical to account for possible target modifications and to reduce uncertainties in the final cross-section results. A common technique used for these purposes is the Nuclear Resonant Reaction Analysis (NRRA), which however requires that a narrow resonance be available inside the dynamic range of the accelerator used. In cases when this is not possible, as for example the 13C(alpha,n)16O reaction recently studied at low energies at the Laboratory for Underground Nuclear Astrophysics (LUNA) in Italy, alternative approaches must be found. Here, we present a new application of the shape analysis of primary gamma rays emitted by the 13C(p,g)14N radiative capture reaction. This approach was used to monitor 13C target degradation {\em in situ} during the 13C(alpha,n)16O data taking campaign. The results obtained are in agreement with evaluations subsequently performed at Atomki (Hungary) using the NRRA method. We consider the effect of an array of plates or beams over a semi-infinite elastic ground on the propagation of elastic waves hitting the interface. The plates/beams are slender bodies with flexural resonances at low frequencies able to perturb significantly the propagation of waves in the ground. An effective model is obtained using asymptotic analysis and homogenization techniques, which can be expressed in terms of the ground alone with effective dynamic (frequency-dependent) boundary conditions of the Robin's type. For an incident plane wave at oblique incidence, the displacement fields and the reflection coefficients are obtained in closed forms and their validity is inspected by comparison with direct numerics in a two-dimensional setting., Comment: 29 pages, 13 figures

We present a three-dimensional model describing the propagation of elastic waves in a soil substrate supporting an array of cylindrical beams experiencing flexural and compressional resonances. The resulting surface waves are of two types. In the sagittal plane, hybridized Rayleigh waves can propagate except within bandgaps resulting from a complex interplay between flexural and compressional resonances. We exhibit a wave decoupled from the hybridized Rayleigh wave which is the elastic analogue of electromagnetic spoof plasmon polaritons. This wave with displacements perpendicular to the sagittal plane is sensitive only to flexural resonances. We present the \texttt{YBC} database of stellar bolometric corrections (BCs), available at \url{http://stev.oapd.inaf.it/YBC}. We homogenize widely-used theoretical stellar spectral libraries and provide BCs for many popular photometric systems, including the Gaia filters. The database can be easily extended to additional photometric systems and stellar spectral libraries. The web interface allows users to transform their catalogue of theoretical stellar parameters into magnitudes and colours of selected filter sets. The BC tables can be downloaded or also be implemented into large simulation projects using the interpolation code provided with the database. We compute extinction coefficients on a star-by-star basis, hence taking into account the effects of spectral type and non-linearity dependency on the total extinction. We illustrate the use of these BCs in \texttt{PARSEC} isochrones. We show that using spectral-type dependent extinction coefficients is quite necessary for Gaia filters whenever $\Av\gtrsim 0.5$\,mag. Context: The period-luminosity diagram (PLD) has proven to be a powerful tool for studying populations of pulsating red giants. Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2) provides a large data set including many long-period variables (LPVs) on which this tool can be applied. Aims: We investigate the location of LPVs from the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds in the PLD using various optical and infrared luminosity indicators from Gaia and 2MASS, respectively. We thereby distinguish between stars of different masses and surface chemistry. Methods: The data set taken from the Gaia DR2 catalogue of LPVs allows for a homogeneous study from low- to high-mass LPVs. These sources are divided into sub-populations of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars according to their mass and their O- or C-rich nature using the Gaia-2MASS diagram developed by our group. This diagram uses a Wesenheit index Wrp based on Wesenheit functions in the Gaia and 2MASS photometric bands. Four different luminosity indicators are used to study the period-luminosity (P-L) relations. Results: We provide the first observational evidence of a P-L relation offset for both fundamental and 1O pulsators between low- and intermediate-mass O-rich stars, in agreement with published pulsation predictions. Among the luminosity indicators explored, sequence C' is the narrowest in the P-Wrp diagram, and is thus to be preferred over the other PLDs for the determination of distances using LPVs. The majority of massive asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars and red supergiants form a smooth extension of sequence C of low- and intermediate-mass AGB stars in the P-Wrp diagram, suggesting that they pulsate in the fundamental mode. We perform a comprehensive study of the stellar populations in the young Large Magellanic Cloud cluster NGC 1866, combining the analysis of its best-studied Cepheids with that of a very accurate colour-magnitude diagram (CMD) obtained from the most recent Hubble Space Telescope photometry. We use a Bayesian method based on new PARSEC stellar evolutionary tracks with overshooting and rotation to obtain ages and initial rotation velocities of five well-studied Cepheids of the cluster. We find that four of the five Cepheids belong to an initially slowly rotating young population (of $ 176 \pm 5$ Myr), while the fifth one is significantly older, either $ 288 \pm 20$ Myr for models with high initial rotational velocity ($\omega_\mathrm{i} \sim 0.9$), or $ 202 \pm 5$ Myr for slowly rotating models. The complementary analysis of the CMD rules out the latter solution while strongly supporting the presence of two distinct populations of $\sim$176 Myr and $\sim$288 Myr, respectively. Moreover, the observed multiple main sequences and the turn-offs indicate that the younger population is mainly made of slowly rotating stars, as is the case of the four younger Cepheids, while the older population is made mainly of initially fast rotating stars, as is the case of the fifth Cepheid. Our study not only reinforces the notion that some young clusters like NGC 1866 harbor multiple populations, but gives also hints that the first population, the older, may inherit the angular momentum from the parent cloud while stars of the second one, the younger, do not., Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures, accepted in A&A

Rapidly rotating stars have been recently recognized as having a major role in the interpretation of colour-magnitude diagrams of young and intermediate-age star clusters in the Magellanic Clouds and in the Milky Way. In this work, we evaluate the distinctive spectra and distributions in colour-colour space that follow from the presence of a substantial range in effective temperatures across the surface of fast rotators. The calculations are inserted in a formalism similar to the one usually adopted for non-rotating stars, which allows us to derive tables of bolometric corrections as a function not only of a reference effective temperature, surface gravity and metallicity, but also of the rotational speed with respect to the break-up value, $\omega$, and the inclination angle, $i$. We find that only very fast rotators ($\omega>0.95$) observed nearly equator-on ($i>45^\circ$) present sizable deviations from the colour-colour relations of non-rotating stars. In light of these results, we discuss the photometry of the $\sim$ 200-Myr-old cluster NGC 1866 and its split main sequence, which has been attributed to the simultaneous presence of slow and fast rotators. The small dispersion of its stars in colour-colour diagrams allow us to conclude that fast rotators in this cluster either have rotational velocities $\omega<0.95$, or are all observed nearly pole-on. Such geometric colour-colour effects, although small, might be potentially detectable in the huge, high-quality photometric samples in the post-Gaia era, in addition to the evolutionary effects caused by rotation-induced mixing., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 10 pages, 7 figures

We have computed a grid of hydrostatic spherical COMARCS models for C stars covering metallicities from [Z/H]=0 to -2 and values of the carbon excess [C-O] from 6.41 to 9.15, plus some temperature sequences, where the amount of oxygen and nitrogen is increased relative to a scaled solar element mixture. Such abundance variations may appear during the late stages of stellar evolution. Our study covers changes of [O/Z] and [N/Z] going up to +0.5. Based on the atmospheric structures we have calculated synthetic spectra and photometry for all of the models in a consistent way. The sequences with changed [O/Z] and [N/Z] can be used to derive correction terms, which are applied to the colours predicted for a certain combination of effective temperature, surface gravity, metallicity and carbon excess. If one neglects these shifts in case of a variable oxygen amount, taking [C-O] instead of C/O gives much better results, since the first quantity dominates the formation of many important molecular species. For the warmer C giants with weaker pulsation it is in principle possible to determine [C-O], [O/Z] or [N/Z] from high resolution spectra, when the opacities in the radiative transfer calculations for the models and observable properties are treated consistently. The corresponding changes due to the abundances often become significantly larger than the deviations caused by uncertainties of the stellar parameters or by a optically thin dust shell.
