We use the EAGLE cosmological simulations to perform a comprehensive and systematic analysis of the $z=0.1$ Fundamental Plane (FP), the tight relation between galaxy size, mass and velocity dispersion. Finding and characterising the first galaxies that illuminated the early Universe at cosmic dawn is pivotal to understand the physical conditions and the processes that led to the formation of the first stars. In the first few months of operations, imaging from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) have been used to identify tens of candidates of galaxies at redshift (z) greater than 10, less than 450 million years after the Big Bang. However, none of these candidates has yet been confirmed spectroscopically, leaving open the possibility that they are actually low-redshift interlopers. The 3D-Drift And SHift (3D-DASH) program is a \textit{Hubble Space Telescope} WFC3 F160W imaging and G141 grism survey of the equatorial COSMOS field. 3D-DASH extends the legacy of HST near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy to degree-scale swaths of the sky, enabling the identification and study of distant galaxies ($z>2$) that are rare or in short-lived phases of galaxy evolution at rest-frame optical wavelengths. Furthermore, when combined with existing ACS/F814W imaging, the program facilitates spatially-resolved studies of the stellar populations and dust content of intermediate-redshift ($0.5, Comment: The 3D-DASH mosaic, PSF and cutout generator tool, and the image explorer are available at archive.stsci.edu/hlsp/3d-dash and at www.lamiyamowla.com/3d-dash. We present the $H_{160}$ morphological catalogs for the COSMOS-DASH survey, the largest area near-IR survey using HST-WFC3 to date. Utilizing the "Drift And SHift" observing technique for HST-WFC3 imaging, the COSMOS-DASH survey imaged approximately 0.5 deg$^2$ of the UltraVISTA deep stripes (0.7 deg$^2$ when combined with archival data). Global structural parameters are measured for 51,586 galaxies within COSMOS-DASH using GALFIT (excluding the CANDELS area) with detection using a deep multi-band HST image. We recover consistent results with those from the deeper 3D-HST morphological catalogs, finding that, in general, sizes and S��rsic indices of typical galaxies are accurate to limiting magnitudes of $H_{160}, 27 pages, 17 figures. We use mock images of $z=0.1$ galaxies in the 100 Mpc EAGLE simulation to establish the differences between the sizes and morphologies inferred from the stellar mass distributions and the optical light distributions. The optical, $r$-band images used were constructed with a radiative transfer method to account for the effects of dust, and we measure galaxy structural parameters by fitting S\'ersic models to the images with Galfit. We find that the derived $r$-band half-light radii differ systematically from the stellar half-mass radii, as the $r$-band sizes are typically 0.1 dex larger, and can deviate by as much as $\approx0.5$ dex. The magnitude of this size discrepancy depends strongly on the dust attenuation and star formation activity within the galaxy, as well as the measurement method used. Consequently, we demonstrate that the $r$-band sizes significantly improve the agreement between the simulated and observed stellar mass-size relation: star-forming and quiescent galaxies in EAGLE are typically only slightly larger than observed in the GAMA survey (by 0.1 dex), and the slope and scatter of the local mass-size relation are reproduced well for both populations. Finally, we also compare the obtained morphologies with measurements from GAMA, finding that too few EAGLE galaxies have light profiles that are similar to local early-type galaxies (S\'ersic indices of $n\sim 4$). Despite the presence of a significant population of triaxial systems among the simulated galaxies, the surface brightness and stellar mass density profiles tend to be closer to exponential discs ($n\sim1-2$). Our results highlight the need to measure the sizes and morphologies of simulated galaxies using common observational methods in order to perform a meaningful comparison with observations., Comment: 22 pages, 18 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS. Dynamical models for $673$ galaxies at $z=0.6-1.0$ with spatially resolved (long-slit) stellar kinematic data from LEGA-C are used to calibrate virial mass estimates defined as $M_{\rm{vir}}=K \sigma'^2_{\star,\rm{int}} R$, with $K$ a scaling factor, $\sigma'_{\star,\rm{int}}$ the spatially-integrated stellar velocity second moment from the LEGA-C survey and $R$ the effective radius measured from a S\'ersic profile fit to HST imaging. The sample is representative for $M_{\star}>3\times10^{10}~M_{\odot}$ and includes all types of galaxies, irrespective of morphology and color. We demonstrate that using $R=R_{\rm{sma}}$~(the semi-major axis length of the ellipse that encloses 50\% of the light) in combination with an inclination correction on $\sigma'_{\star,\rm{int}}$~produces an unbiased $M_{\rm{vir}}$. We confirm the importance of projection effects on $\sigma'_{\star,\rm{int}}$ by showing the existence of a similar residual trend between virial mass estimates and inclination for the nearby early-type galaxies in the ATLAS$^{\rm{3D}}$~survey. Also, as previously shown, when using a S\'ersic profile-based $R$ estimate, then a S\'{e}rsic index-dependent correction to account for non-homology in the radial profiles is required. With respect to analogous dynamical models for low-redshift galaxies from the ATLAS$^{\rm{3D}}$~survey we find a systematic offset of 0.1 dex in the calibrated virial constant for LEGA-C, which may be due to physical differences between the galaxy samples or an unknown systematic error. Either way, with our work we establish a common mass scale for galaxies across 8 Gyr of cosmic time with a systematic uncertainty of at most 0.1 dex., Comment: Published in ApJ

We use the panchromatic spectral energy distribution (SED)-fitting code Prospector to measure the galaxy logM*–logSFR relationship (the star-forming sequence) across 0.2 < z < 3.0 using the COSMOS-2015 and 3D-HST UV-IR photometric catalogs. We demonstrate that the chosen method of identifying star-forming galaxies introduces a systematic uncertainty in the inferred normalization and width of the star-forming sequence, peaking for massive galaxies at ∼0.5 and ∼0.2 dex, respectively. To avoid this systematic, we instead parameterize the density of the full galaxy population in the logM*–logSFR–redshift plane using a flexible neural network known as a normalizing flow. The resulting star-forming sequence has a low-mass slope near unity and a much flatter slope at higher masses, with a normalization 0.2–0.5 dex lower than typical inferences in the literature. We show this difference is due to the sophistication of the Prospector stellar populations modeling: the nonparametric star formation histories naturally produce higher masses while the combination of individualized metallicity, dust, and star formation history constraints produce lower star formation rates (SFRs) than typical UV+IR formulae. We introduce a simple formalism to understand the difference between SFRs inferred from SED fitting and standard template-based approaches such as UV+IR SFRs. Finally, we demonstrate the inferred star-forming sequence is consistent with predictions from theoretical models of galaxy formation, resolving a long-standing ∼ 0.2–0.5 dex offset with observations at 0.5 < z < 3. While low-luminosity galaxies dominate number counts at all redshifts, their contribution to cosmic reionization is poorly understood due to a lack of knowledge of their physical properties. We isolate a sample of 35 z ≈ 4–5 continuum-faint Lyman-α emitters from deep VLT/MUSE spectroscopy and directly measure their H α emission using stacked Spitzer/IRAC Ch. 1 photometry. Based on Hubble Space Telescope imaging, we determine that the average UV continuum magnitude is fainter than −16 (≈ 0.01 L⋆), implying a median Lyman-α equivalent width of 259 Å. By combining the H α measurement with the UV magnitude, we determine the ionizing photon production efficiency, ξion, a first for such faint galaxies. The measurement of log10 (ξion [Hz erg−1]) = 26.28 (+0.28−0.40) is in excess of literature measurements of both continuum- and emission line-selected samples, implying a more efficient production of ionizing photons in these lower luminosity, Lyman-α-selected systems. We present spatially resolved stellar kinematics for 797 $z=0.6-1$ galaxies selected from the LEGA-C survey and construct axisymmetric Jeans models to quantify their dynamical mass and degree of rotational support. The survey is $K_s$-band selected, irrespective of color or morphological type, and allows for a first assessment of the stellar dynamical structure of the general $L^*$ galaxy population at large lookback time. Using light profiles from Hubble Space Telescope imaging as a tracer, our approach corrects for observational effects (seeing convolution and slit geometry), and uses well-informed priors on inclination, anisotropy and a non-luminous mass component. Tabulated data include total mass estimates in a series of spherical apertures (1, 5, and 10 kpc; 1$\times$ and 2$\times$\re), as well as rotational velocities, velocity dispersions and anisotropy. We show that almost all star-forming galaxies and $\sim$50\% of quiescent galaxies are rotation-dominated, with deprojected $V/\sigma\sim1-2$. Revealing the complexity in galaxy evolution, we find that the most massive star-forming galaxies are among the most rotation-dominated, and the most massive quiescent galaxies among the least rotation-dominated galaxies. These measurements set a new benchmark for studying galaxy evolution, using stellar dynamical structure for galaxies at large lookback time. Together with the additional information on stellar population properties from the LEGA-C spectra, the dynamical mass and $V/\sigma$ measurements presented here create new avenues for studying galaxy evolution at large lookback time., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. We explore the connection between the kinematics, structures and stellar populations of massive galaxies at $0.610.5$) galaxies that span a wide range in morphology, star formation activity and environment, and therefore is representative of the massive galaxy population at $z\sim0.8$. We find that quiescent and star-forming galaxies occupy the parameter space of the $g$-band FP differently and thus have different distributions in the dynamical mass-to-light ratio ($M_{\rm dyn}/L_g$), largely owing to differences in the stellar age and recent star formation history, and, to a lesser extent, the effects of dust attenuation. In contrast, we show that both star-forming and quiescent galaxies lie on the same mass FP at $z\sim 0.8$, with a comparable level of intrinsic scatter about the plane. We examine the variation in $M_{\rm dyn}/M_*$ through the thickness of the mass FP, finding no significant residual correlations with stellar population properties, S\'ersic index, or galaxy overdensity. Our results suggest that, at fixed size and velocity dispersion, the variations in $M_{\rm dyn}/L_g$ of massive galaxies reflect an approximately equal contribution of variations in $M_*/L_g$, and variations in the dark matter fraction or initial mass function., Comment: 32 pages, 19 figures (including appendices); accepted for publication in ApJ

Using deep rest-frame optical spectroscopy from the Large Early Galaxy Astrophysical Census (LEGA-C) survey, conducted using VIMOS on the ESO Very Large Telescope, we search for low-ionization [O ii] λ λ 3726,3729 emission in the spectra of a mass-complete sample of z ≈ 0.85 galaxies. We find that 59% of UVJ-quiescent (i.e., non-star-forming) galaxies in the sample have [O ii] emission detected above our completeness limit of 1.5 Å, and the median-stacked spectrum of the remaining sample also shows [O ii] emission. The overall fraction of sources with [O ii] above our equivalent width limit is comparable to what we find in the low-redshift universe from GAMA and MASSIVE, except perhaps at the highest stellar masses (>1011.5 M ⊙). However, stacked spectra for the individual low-equivalent-width systems uniquely indicates ubiquitous [O ii] emission in the higher-z LEGA-C sample, with typical [O ii] luminosities per unit stellar mass that are a factor of ×3 larger than the lower-z GAMA sample. Star formation at higher-z could play a role in producing the [O ii] emission, although it is unlikely to provide the bulk of the ionizing photons. More work is required to fully quantify the contributions of evolved stellar populations or active galactic nuclei to the observed spectra.

We use the Fundamental Plane (FP) to measure the redshift evolution of the dynamical mass-to-light ratio ($M_{\mathrm{dyn}}/L$) and the dynamical-to-stellar mass ratio ($M_{\mathrm{dyn}}/M_*$). Although conventionally used to study the properties of early-type galaxies, we here obtain stellar kinematic measurements from the Large Early Galaxy Astrophysics Census (LEGA-C) Survey for a sample of $\sim1400$ massive ($\log( M_*/M_\odot) >10.5$) galaxies at $0.6, Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures; accepted for publication in ApJL

We present a novel approach to measure the attenuation curves of 485 individual star-forming galaxies with M$_*$ $>$ 10$^{10}$ M$_{\odot}$ based on deep optical spectra from the VLT/VIMOS LEGA-C survey and multi-band photometry in the COSMOS field. Most importantly, we find that the attenuation curves in the rest-frame $3000-4500$A range are typically almost twice as steep as the Milky Way, LMC, SMC, and Calzetti attenuation curves, which is in agreement with recent studies of the integrated light of present-day galaxies. The attenuation at $4500$A and the slope strongly correlate with the galaxy inclination: face-on galaxies show less attenuation and steeper curves compared to edge-on galaxies, suggesting that geometric effects dominate observed variations in attenuation. Our new method produces $2175$A UV bump detections for 260 individual galaxies. Even though obvious correlations between UV bump strength and global galaxy properties are absent, strong UV bumps are most often seen in face-on, lower-mass galaxies (10 $, Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures, 1 table. We use deep, spatially resolved spectroscopy from the LEGA-C Survey to study radial variations in the stellar population of 17 spectroscopically-selected post-starburst (PSB) galaxies. We use spectral fitting to measure two Lick indices, $H{\delta}_A$ and $Fe4383$, and find that, on average, PSB galaxies have radially decreasing $H{\delta}_A$ and increasing $Fe4383$ profiles. In contrast, a control sample of quiescent, non-PSB galaxies in the same mass range shows outwardly increasing $H{\delta}_A$ and decreasing $Fe4383$. The observed gradients are weak ($\approx-0.2$ \r{A}/$R_e$), mainly due to seeing convolution. A two-SSP model suggests intrinsic gradients are as strong as observed in local PSB galaxies ($\approx -0.8$ \r{A}$/R_e$). We interpret these results in terms of inside-out growth (for the bulk of the quiescent population) vs star formation occurring last in the centre (for PSB galaxies). At $z\approx0.8$, central starbursts are often the result of gas-rich mergers, as evidenced by the high fraction of PSB galaxies with disturbed morphologies and tidal features (40%). Our results provide additional evidence for multiple paths to quiescence: a standard path, associated with inside-out disc formation and with gradually decreasing star-formation activity, without fundamental structural transformation, and a fast path, associated with centrally-concentrated starbursts, leaving an inverse age gradient and smaller half-light radius., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures

In this letter, we investigate the impact of environment on integrated and spatially-resolved stellar kinematics of a sample of massive, quiescent galaxies at intermediate redshift ($0.6, Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, submitted to ApJ Letters

We analyze the colors and sizes of 32 quiescent (UVJ-selected) galaxies with strong Balmer absorption ($\mbox{EW}(H\delta) \geq 4$\AA) at $z\sim0.8$ drawn from DR2 of the LEGA-C survey to test the hypothesis that these galaxies experienced compact, central starbursts before quenching. These recently quenched galaxies, usually referred to as post-starburst galaxies, span a wide range of colors and we find a clear correlation between color and half-light radius, such that bluer galaxies are smaller. We build simple toy models to explain this correlation: a normal star-forming disk plus a central, compact starburst component. Bursts with exponential decay timescale of $\sim$~100 Myr that produce $\sim10\%$ to more than 100\% of the pre-existing masses can reproduce the observed correlation. More significant bursts also produce bluer and smaller descendants. Our findings imply that when galaxies shut down star formation rapidly, they generally had experienced compact, starburst events and that the large, observed spread in sizes and colors mostly reflects a variety of burst strengths. Recently quenched galaxies should have younger stellar ages in the centers; multi-wavelength data with high spatial resolution are required to reveal the age gradient. Highly dissipative processes should be responsible for this type of formation history. We present the deepest Spitzer/IRAC $3.6$, $4.5$, $5.8$ and $8.0\mu$m wide-area mosaics yet over the GOODS-N and GOODS-S fields as part of the GOODS Re-ionization Era wide-Area Treasury from Spitzer (GREATS) project. We reduced and mosaicked in a self-consistent way observations taken by the 11 different Spitzer/IRAC programs over the two GOODS fields from 12 years of Spitzer cryogenic and warm mission data. The cumulative depth in the $3.6\mu$m and $4.5\mu$m bands amounts to $\sim 4260$ hr, $\sim 1220$ hr of which are new very deep observations from the GREATS program itself. In the deepest area, the full-depth mosaics reach $\gtrsim200$ hr over an area of $\sim100$ arcmin$^2$, corresponding to a sensitivity of $\sim29$ AB magnitude at $3.6\mu$m ($1\sigma$ for point sources). Archival cryogenic $5.8\mu$m and $8.0\mu$m band data (a cumulative 976 hr) are also included in the release. The mosaics are projected onto the tangential plane of CANDELS/GOODS at a $0.3''$ pixel$^{-1}$ scale. This paper describes the methodology enabling, and the characteristics of, the public release of the mosaic science images, the corresponding coverage maps in the four IRAC bands, and the empirical Point-Spread Functions (PSFs). These PSFs enable mitigation of the source blending effects by taking into account the complex position-dependent variation in the IRAC images. The GREATS data products are in the Infrared Science Archive (IRSA). We also release the deblended $3.6$-to-$8.0\mu$m photometry for $9192$ Lyman-Break galaxies at $z\sim3.5-10$. GREATS will be the deepest mid-infrared imaging until JWST and, as such, constitutes a major resource for characterizing early galaxy assembly., Comment: Accepted for publication on ApJS. We present the third and final data release of the Large Early Galaxy Astrophysics Census (LEGA-C), an ESO/VLT public spectroscopic survey targeting $0.6 < z < 1.0$, Ks-selected galaxies. The data release contains 3528 spectra with measured stellar velocity dispersions and stellar population properties, a 25-fold increase in sample size compared to previous work. This $K_s$-selected sample probes the galaxy population down to $\sim0.3 L^*$, for all colors and morphological types. Along with the spectra we publish a value-added catalog with stellar and ionized gas velocity dispersions, stellar absorption line indices, emission line fluxes and equivalent widths, complemented with structural parameters measured from HST/ACS imaging. With its combination of high precision and large sample size, LEGA-C provides a new benchmark for galaxy evolution studies., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJS. We use reconstructed star-formation histories (SFHs) of quiescent galaxies at $z=0.6-1$ in the LEGA-C survey to identify secondary star-formation episodes that, after an initial period of quiescence, moved the galaxies back to the star-forming main sequence (blue cloud). $16\pm3$\% of the $z\sim0.8$ quiescent population has experienced such rejuvenation events in the redshift range $0.7, Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, accepted by ApJ

One of the greatest challenges to theoretical models of massive galaxy formation is the regulation of star formation at early times. The relative roles of molecular gas expulsion, depletion, and stabilization are uncertain as direct observational constraints of the gas reservoirs in quenched or quenching galaxies at high redshift are scant. We present ALMA observations of CO(2-1) in a massive ($\log M_{\star}/M_{\odot}=11.2$), recently quenched galaxy at $z=1.522$. The optical spectrum of this object shows strong Balmer absorption lines, which implies that star formation ceased $\sim$0.8 Gyr ago. We do not detect CO(2-1) line emission, placing an upper limit on the molecular $\mathrm{H_2}$ gas mass of 1.1$\times10^{10}\,M_{\odot}$. The implied gas fraction is $f_{\rm{H_2}}{\equiv M_{H_2}/M_{\star}}1$ passive galaxy to date. Our observations show that the depletion of $\mathrm{H_2}$ from the interstellar medium of quenched objects can be both efficient and fairly complete, in contrast to recent claims of significant cold gas in recently quenched galaxies. We explore the variation in observed gas fractions in high-$z$ galaxies and show that galaxies with high stellar surface density have low $f_{\rm{H_2}}$, similar to recent correlations between specific star formation rate and stellar surface density., 8 pages, 5 figures, resubmitted to ApJL following referee report

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) will enable the detection of optical emission lines in galaxies spanning a broad range of luminosities out to redshifts z>10. Measurements of key galaxy properties, such as star formation rate and metallicity, through these observations will provide unique insight into, e.g., the role of feedback from stars and active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in regulating galaxy evolution, the co-evolution of AGNs and host galaxies, the physical origin of the 'main sequence' of star-forming galaxies and the contribution by star-forming galaxies to cosmic reionization. We present an original framework to simulate and analyse observations performed with the Near Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) on board JWST. We use the BEAGLE tool (BayEsian Analysis of GaLaxy sEds) to build a semi-empirical catalogue of galaxy spectra based on photometric spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of dropout galaxies in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF). We demonstrate that the resulting catalogue of galaxy spectra satisfies different types of observational constraints on high redshift galaxies, and use it as input to simulate NIRSpec/prism (R~100) observations. We show that a single 'deep' (~100 ks) NIRSpec/prism pointing in the HUDF will enable S/N>3 detections of multiple optical emission lines in ~30 (~60) galaxies at z>6 (z~4-6) down to m_F160W, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We analyze stellar age indicators (D$_n$4000 and EW(H$\delta$)) and sizes of 467 quiescent galaxies with $M_\ast \geq 10^{10} M_\odot$ at $z\sim0.7$ drawn from DR2 of the LEGA-C survey. Interpreting index variations in terms of equivalent single stellar population age, we find that the median stellar population is younger for larger galaxies at fixed stellar mass. We investigate the effect of a metallicity-dependent stellar initial mass function (IMF), as deduced observationally by Martin-Navarro et al. (2015c), on the inferred stellar masses and star formation rates (SFRs) of a representative sample of 186,886 SDSS galaxies. Relative to a Chabrier IMF, for which we show the implied masses to be close to minimal, the inferred masses increase in both the low- and high-metallicity regimes due to the addition of stellar remnants and dwarf stars, respectively. The resulting galaxy stellar mass function (GSMF) shifts toward higher masses by 0.5 dex, without affecting the high-mass slope (and thus the need for effective quenching). The implied low-redshift SFR density increases by an order of magnitude. However, these results depend strongly on the assumed IMF parametrisation, which is not directly constrained by the observations. Varying the low-end IMF slope instead of the high-end IMF slope, while maintaining the same dwarf-to-giant ratio, results in a much more modest GSMF shift of 0.2 dex and a 10 per cent increase in the SFR density relative to the Chabrier IMF. A bottom-heavy IMF during the late, metal-rich evolutionary stage of a galaxy would help explain the rapid quenching and the bimodality in the galaxy population by on the one hand making galaxies less quenched (due to the continued formation of dwarf stars) and on the other hand reducing the gas consumption timescale. We present a targeted follow-up Hubble Space Telescope WFC3 F160W imaging study of very massive galaxies $(\log(M_{\rm{star}}/M_{\odot})> 11.2)$ selected from a combination of ground-based near-infrared galaxy surveys (UltraVISTA, NMBS-II, UKIDSS UDS) at $1.5, Comment: Submitted to ApJ. 18 pages, 13 figures

The James Webb Space Telescope will provide observational capabilities that far exceed those of current ground- or space-based instrumentation. In particular, the NIRSpec instrument will take highly sensitive spectroscopic data for hundreds of objects simultaneously from 0.6-5.3 microns. Current photometric observations suggest a large and increasing number of faint (M_UV > -16) galaxies at high-redshift, with increasing evidence that galaxies at these redshifts have optical emission lines with extremely high equivalent widths. A simple model of their emission line fluxes and number density evolution with redshift is used to predict the number of galaxies that NIRSpec will serendipitously observe during normal observations with the microshutter array. At exposure times of ~20 hours in the low-resolution prism mode, the model predicts that, on average, every open 1x3 'microslit' will contain an un-targeted galaxy with a detectable [O III] and/or H$\alpha$ emission line; while most of these detections are predicted to be of [O III], H $\alpha$ detections alone would still number 0.56 per open 'microslit' for this exposure time. Many of these objects are spectroscopically detectable even when they are fainter than current photometric limits and/or their flux centroids lie outside of the open microshutter area. The predicted number counts for such galaxies match z ~ 2 observations of [O III] emitters from slitless grism spectroscopic surveys, as well as theoretical predictions based on sophisticated modeling of galaxy spectral energy distributions. We present COSMOS-Drift And SHift (DASH), a Hubble Space Telescope WFC3 imaging survey of the COSMOS field in the H_160 filter. The survey comprises 456 individual WFC3 pointings corresponding to an area of 0.49 deg^2 (0.66 deg^2 when including archival data) and reaches a 5 point-source limit of H_160 =25.1 (0".3 aperture). COSMOS-DASH is the widest HST/WFC3 imaging survey in H_160 filter, tripling the extragalactic survey area in the near-infrared at HST resolution. We make the reduced H_160 mosaic available to the community. We use this dataset to measure the sizes of 162 galaxies with log(M_star/M_sun) > 11.3 at 1.5 < z < 3.0, and augment this sample with 748 galaxies at 0.1 < z < 1.5 using archival ACS imaging. We find that the median size of galaxies in this mass range changes with redshift as r_eff = (10.4+/-0.4)(1 +z)^(0.65+/-0.05) kpc. Separating the galaxies into star forming and quiescent galaxies using their restframe U-V and V-J colors, we find no statistical difference between the median sizes of the most massive star-forming and quiescent galaxies at z = 2.5: they are 4.9+/-0.9 kpc and 4.3 +/-0.3 kpc respectively. However, we do find a significant difference in the S`ersic index between the two samples, such that massive quiescent galaxies have higher central densities than star forming galaxies. We extend the size-mass analysis to lower masses by combining it with the 3D-HST/CANDELS sample of van der Wel et al. (2014), and derive empirical relations between size, mass, and redshift. Fitting a relation of the form r_eff = A m_star^a, m_star = M_star/5x10^10 M_sun and r_eff in kpc, we find log A = -0.25 log (1 + z) + 0.79 and a = -0.13 log(1 + z) + 0.27. We also provide relations for the subsamples of star forming and quiescent galaxies. Galaxy observations are influenced by many physical parameters: stellar masses, star formation rates (SFRs), star formation histories (SFHs), metallicities, dust, black hole activity, and more. As a result, inferring accurate physical parameters requires high-dimensional models which capture or marginalize over this complexity. Here we re-assess inferences of galaxy stellar masses and SFRs using the 14-parameter physical model Prospector-$��$ built in the Prospector Bayesian inference framework. We fit the photometry of 58,461 galaxies from the 3D-HST catalogs at $0.5 < z < 2.5$. The resulting stellar masses are $\sim0.1-0.3$ dex larger than the fiducial masses while remaining consistent with dynamical constraints. This change is primarily due to the systematically older SFHs inferred with Prospector. The SFRs are $\sim0.1-1+$ dex lower than UV+IR SFRs, with the largest offsets caused by emission from "old" ($t>100$ Myr) stars. These new inferences lower the observed cosmic star formation rate density by $\sim0.2$ dex and increase the observed stellar mass growth by $\sim 0.1$ dex, finally bringing these two quantities into agreement and implying an older, more quiescent Universe than found by previous studies at these redshifts. We corroborate these results by showing that the Prospector-$��$ SFHs are both more physically realistic and are much better predictors of the evolution of the stellar mass function. We present a comparison of the observed, spatially integrated stellar and ionized gas velocity dispersions of $\sim1000$ massive ($\log M_{\star}/M_{\odot}\gtrsim\,10.3$) galaxies in the Large Early Galaxy Astrophysics Census (LEGA-C) survey at $0.6\lesssim\,z\lesssim1.0$. The high $S/N\sim20{\rm\AA^{-1}}$ afforded by 20 hour VLT/VIMOS spectra allows for joint modeling of the stellar continuum and emission lines in all galaxies, spanning the full range of galaxy colors and morphologies. These observed integrated velocity dispersions (denoted as $\sigma'_{g, int}$ and $\sigma'_{\star, int}$) are related to the intrinsic velocity dispersions of ionized gas or stars, but also include rotational motions through beam smearing and spectral extraction. We find good average agreement between observed velocity dispersions, with $\langle\log(\sigma'_{g, int}/\sigma'_{\star, int})\rangle=-0.003$. This result does not depend strongly on stellar population, structural properties, or alignment with respect to the slit. However, in all regimes we find significant scatter between $\sigma'_{g, int}$ and $\sigma'_{\star, int}$, with an overall scatter of 0.13 dex of which 0.05 dex is due to observational uncertainties. For an individual galaxy, the scatter between $\sigma'_{g, int}$ and $\sigma'_{\star, int}$ translates to an additional uncertainty of $\sim0.24\rm{dex}$ on dynamical mass derived from $\sigma'_{g, int}$, on top of measurement errors and uncertainties from Virial constant or size estimates. We measure the $z\sim0.8$ stellar mass Faber-Jackson relation and demonstrate that emission line widths can be used to measure scaling relations. We present the Hubble Deep UV Legacy Survey (HDUV), a 132 orbit imaging program with the WFC3/UVIS camera onboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The HDUV extends and builds on the few previous UV imaging surveys in the two GOODS/CANDELS-Deep fields to provide deep images over a total area of ~100 arcmin2 in the two filters F275W and F336W. Our release also includes all the F275W imaging data taken by the CANDELS survey, which were aligned using a novel approach and combined with the HDUV survey data. By reaching depths of 27.5-28.0 mag (5sigma, in 0.4" apertures), these are the deepest high-resolution UV data over such a large area taken to date. Such unique UV imaging enables a wide range of science by the community. Among the main goals of the HDUV survey are: (1) provide a complete sample of faint star-forming galaxies at z~1-3, (2) constrain the ionizing photon escape fraction from galaxies at z~2-3, and (3) track the build-up of bulges and the disappearance of clumpy disk galaxies through reliable internal stellar population properties at sub-kpc resolution out to z~3. The addition of the HDUV data further enhances the legacy value of the two GOODS/CANDELS-Deep fields, which now include deep 11-band HST imaging as well as very deep ancillary data from X-ray to radio, enabling unique multi-wavelength studies. We present stellar rotation curves and velocity dispersion profiles for 104 quiescent galaxies at $z=0.6-1$ from the Large Early Galaxy Astrophysics Census (LEGA-C) spectroscopic survey. Rotation is typically probed across 10-20kpc, or to an average of 2.7${\rm R_e}$. Combined with central stellar velocity dispersions ($\sigma_0$) this provides the first determination of the dynamical state of a sample selected by a lack of star formation activity at large lookback time. The most massive galaxies ($M_{\star}>2\times10^{11}\,M_{\odot}$) generally show no or little rotation measured at 5kpc ($|V_5|/\sigma_0, Comment: 30 pages, 18 figures, Accepted for Publication in ApJ

Using high-resolution spectra from the VLT Large Early Galaxy Astrophysics Census (LEGA-C) program, we reconstruct the star formation histories (SFHs) of 607 galaxies at redshifts z - 0.6-1.0 and stellar masses. greater than or similar to 10(10) M circle dot using a custom full spectrum fitting algorithm that incorporates the emcee and FSPS packages. We show that the mass-weighted age of a galaxy correlates strongly with stellar velocity dispersion (sigma(*)) and ongoing star formation (SF) activity, with the stellar content in higher-sigma(*) galaxies having formed earlier and faster. The SFHs of quiescent galaxies are generally consistent with passive evolution since their main SF epoch, but a minority show clear evidence of a rejuvenation event in their recent past. The mean age of stars in galaxies that are star-forming is generally significantly younger, with SF peaking after z < 1.5 for almost all star-forming galaxies in the sample: many of these still have either constant or rising SFRs on timescales > 100 Myr. This indicates that z > 2 progenitors of z similar to 1 star-forming galaxies are generally far less massive. Finally, despite considerable variance in the individual SFHs, we show that the current SF activity of massive galaxies (>L-*) at z similar to 1 correlates with SF levels at least 3 Gyr prior: SFHs retain "memory" on a large fraction of the Hubble time. Our results illustrate a novel approach to resolve the formation phase of galaxies, and, by identifying their individual evolutionary paths, one can connect progenitors and descendants across cosmic time. This is uniquely enabled by the high-quality continuum spectroscopy provided by the LEGA-C survey.

IAU Commission 28 (IAU C28: Galaxies) was founded in the late 1930s at which time it had only a small membership (see the historical notes by Sadler et al. 2007). When C28 ended its existence in 2015 there were well over 1000 members on its books. The membership had grown to the point where the effort to keep track of active participants had become a major task. During the C28s tenure 27 IAU Symposia have been devoted to galaxies, the third highest number (Mickaelian 2014)
