Abstract

Prior indication that renewable energy can be extracted from hydrogen bonds in water has led to several investigations of the energy balance when bulk liquid is converted into micron scale droplets by directional (nonthermal) forces. The demonstration of this effect has previously involved pulsed high current arcs in water which produce large electrodynamic forces. Here, we show that renewable energy is also liberated during the creation of droplets by electrostatic forces in electrohydrodynamic atomization (electrospray) experiments. Using both ethanol and water, the energy outputs, primarily the droplet kinetic energy, were always greater than the energy inputs, implying that stored energy was liberated from the liquid. The energetics of generic chemical bonding are investigated to demonstrate that although this discovery was not publicly anticipated, it is consistent with conventional theory. This experimental breakthrough should have a major impact on the quest for renewable energy sources, capable of powering electricity generators. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Is it possible to make platinum particles with a diameter of less than eight nanometres? That was the question Jan Marijnissen at the aerosol lab of Delft ChemTech was asked. Together with graduate student Jan van Erven, the famous aerosol expert Sheldon Friedlander of the University of California (UCLA), and the University of Karlsruhe, Germany, Marijnissen set out to experiment. He managed to do achieve this by using his favourite electrospray method. While they were at it, the research teams used an electron microscope to see how a soot filter uses the platinum nanogranules to get rid of its soot.

Abstract

Each year in the Netherlands alone, some 8,000 tons of pesticides are sprayed onto crops. Some of this is used inside greenhouses, on plants, flowers, and fruit. The problem with spraying is that a large part of the pesticide, something like 80%, ends up anywhere but on the plant. This is not only a waste of material, it also puts the environment at risk, with airborne or waterborne pesticides possibly contaminating our drinking water resources. However, there is hope of improvement in the form of an electrospraying method devised by Dr Kees Geerse, who recently gained his doctorate. His plan may well result in a better method of fighting plant disease.

Dr.Ir. Jan Marijnissen, particle technologist with TU Delfts Chemical Technology section, has been busy developing a particle sensor for fourteen years now. Suddenly his work has become more topical than ever in the wake of the terrorist attacks in the States. A chemical particle sensor has meanwhile been launched on the market, and now the chemical technologist is working with doctorate student Arjan van Wuyckhuyse to develop a sensor that can trace bacteria and especially the seemingly ubiquitous anthrax bacteria. Hospitals, of course, will naturally find this method very useful, but it is the military who are showing particular interest.

Although banned by the BTWC in 1972, biological warfare agents continue to be a threat to military and public health. Countermeasures can only be effective if rapid detection and reliable identification techniques are in place. TNO Prins Maurits Laboratory, and Delft University of Technology and Bruker-Daltonik (Germany) are developing an bioaerosol alarm detector, based on fluorescence pre-selection, Aerosol Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry (ATOFMS) and Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization (MALDI).
