1. A Pad\'e-Weierstrass technique for the rigorous enforcement of control limits in power flow studies

Abstract

A new technique is presented for solving the problem of enforcing control limits in power flow studies. As an added benefit, it greatly increases the achievable precision at nose points. The method is exemplified for the case of Mvar limits in generators regulating voltage on both local and remote buses. Based on the framework of the Holomorphic Embedding Loadflow Method (HELM), it provides a rigorous solution to this fundamental problem by framing it in terms of \emph{optimization}. A novel Lagrangian formulation of power-flow, which is exact for lossless networks, leads to a natural physics-based minimization criterion that yields the correct solution. For networks with small losses, as is the case in transmission, the AC power flow problem cannot be framed exactly in terms of optimization, but the criterion still retains its ability to select the correct solution. This foundation then provides a way to design a HELM scheme to solve for the minimizing solution. Although the use of barrier functions evokes interior point optimization, this method, like HELM, is based on the analytic continuation of a germ (of a particular branch) of the algebraic curve representing the solutions of the system. In this case, since the constraint equations given by limits result in an unavoidable singularity at $s=1$, direct analytic continuation by means of standard Pad\'e approximation is fraught with numerical instabilities. This has been overcome by means of a new analytic continuation procedure, denominated Pad\'e-Weierstrass, that exploits the covariant nature of the power flow equations under certain changes of variables. One colateral benefit of this procedure is that it can also be used when limits are not being enforced, in order to increase the achievable numerical precision in highly stressed cases.

Abstract

The risks of supplementation must be examined to assess the genetic effects to native wild populations before full implementation or exclusion of programs that involve captive breeding and release. Real genetic data can be applied to simulations of genetic changes in populations of interest and subsequently used in risk assessment. Ancestral Mediterranean brown trout (Salmo trutta) lineages exhibit complex population structure among native populations. Genetically divergent Atlantic stocks were maintained and released in the Mediterranean rivers as recreational fish, which resulted in hybridization and introgression with local populations. Therefore, we designed a new supplementation program based on native stocks and evaluated the genetic risks associated with releasing native fish in recreational fisheries. Our simulation was delimited by the observed population genetic structure and available hatchery facilities in the study region. Supplementation with native stocks maintained estimates of gene diversity indexes (total diversity ([H.sub.T]), local diversity ([H.sub.S]), and population differentiation ([G.sub.ST])). However, simulations indicated that long-term supplementation significantly reduced genetic diversity among locations because of a homogenizing effect of populations along each management unit. Therefore, such reinforcements compromised the conservation of local genetic variation. Nevertheless, replacement of current foreign stocks with native stocks can be an important step towards promoting the value of preserving local diversity among anglers. Les risques de la supplementation doivent etre examines afin d'evaluer ses effets genetiques sur les populations sauvages indigenes prealablement a la mise en reuvre ou l'exclusion de programmes d'elevage en captivite suivi de lachers dans le milieu naturel. Des donnees genetiques reelles peuvent etre appliquees a des simulations des variations genetiques dans les populations d'interet, puis utilisees pour evaluer les risques. Les lignees ancestrales de truites brunes (Salmo trutta) de la Mediterranee presentent une structure de population complexe au sein des populations indigenes. Des stocks provenant de l'Atlantique, divergents sur le plan genetique, ont ete maintenus et relaches dans des rivieres mediterraneennes pour la peche recreative, ce qui a entraine leur hybridation avec les populations locales et leur introgression dans ces dernieres. Nous avons donc conqu un nouveau programme de supplementation reposant sur des stocks indigenes et evalue les risques genetiques associes au lacher de poissons indigenes pour les peches recreatives. Notre simulation etait delimitee par la structure genetique observee des populations et les installations d'alevinage disponibles dans la region a l'etude. Si la supplementation avec des stocks indigenes permettait le maintien des indices de diversite genetique (diversite totale ([H.sub.T]), diversite locale ([H.sub.S]) et differenciation entre populations ([G.sub.ST])) estimes, les simulations indiquent que la supplementation a long terme reduit la diversite genetique entre localites en raison d'un effet d'homogeneisation des populations dans les differentes unites de gestion. Ces renforcements compromettent donc la conservation de la variation genetique locale. Abstract

Colonization of brown trout in the postglacial period has been studied through distribution of allozyme variants in Europe. Fourteen published studies and unpublished data were used to compile data from 11 polymorphic allozyme loci. Three preglacial lineages existed, each fixed for different sets of alleles at the two loci, LDH-C and CK-A1. At the time of glacial retreat, recolonization seems to have taken place mostly into adjacent areas. A northern expansion from an Atlantic drainages refuge may have taken place in southern France and Iberia, and perhaps there was a northern/eastern radiation from a refuge near the English Channel and a north-western migration from an eastern Mediterranean-Caspian area refuge.

In allozyme analysis of tissue samples of 910 European hake, Merluccius merluccius, polymorphism was found at 21 of 34 protein-coding loci. The samples were from six North Atlantic and four Mediterranean locations. A major subdivision was seen from allelic differences related to the two collections. Gene flow from nearby Atlantic to proximal Mediterranean populations was suggested by allele frequencies and relevant oceanographic and geological information. Present management, based on two distinct populations, is justified. The differing and separate northern and southern stocks suggested by the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) do not constitute an adequate description.

Abstract

The fetal inflammatory response (FIR) increases the risk of perinatal brain injury, particularly in extremely low gestational age newborns (ELGANs, < 28 weeks of gestation). One of the mechanisms contributing to such a risk is a postnatal intermittent or sustained systemic inflammation (ISSI) following FIR. The link between prenatal and postnatal systemic inflammation is supported by the presence of well‐established inflammatory biomarkers in the umbilical cord and peripheral blood. However, the extent of molecular changes contributing to this association is unknown. Using RNA sequencing and mass spectrometry proteomics, we profiled the transcriptome and proteome of archived neonatal dried blood spot (DBS) specimens from 21 ELGANs. Comparing FIR‐affected and unaffected ELGANs, we identified 782 gene and 27 protein expression changes of 50% magnitude or more, and an experiment‐wide significance level below 5% false discovery rate. These expression changes confirm the robust postnatal activation of the innate immune system in FIR‐affected ELGANs and reveal for the first time an impairment of their adaptive immunity. In turn, the altered pathways provide clues about the molecular mechanisms triggering ISSI after FIR, and the onset of perinatal brain injury. Databases: EGAS00001003635 (EGA); PXD011626 (PRIDE).
