Abstract Background Scholars recommend providing migrants living with HIV (MLWH) with free treatment, rapidly, once linked to care to optimize their HIV-related experiences and health outcomes. Quantitative evaluations of patient-reported measures for MLWH in such models are necessary to explore the viability of these recommendations. Methods Within a 96-week prospective cohort study at a multidisciplinary HIV clinic, participants received bictegravir/emtricitabine/tenofovir alafenamide (B/F/TAF) for free and rapidly following care linkage. Eight patient-reported measures were administered at weeks 4, 24, and 48: (1) mMOS-SS to measure perceived social support; (2) IA-RSS to measure internalized stigma; (3) K6 to measure psychological distress; (4) PROMIS to measure self-efficacy with treatment taking; (5) G-MISS to measure perceived compliance with clinicians’ treatment plans; (6) HIVTSQ to measure treatment satisfaction; (7) CARE to measure perceived provider empathy; and (8) PRPCC to measure perceived clinician cultural competence. Linear mixed modelling with bootstrapping was conducted to identify significant differences by sociodemographics and time. Results Across weeks 4, 24, and 48, results suggest that MLWH enrolled in this study experienced moderate levels of social support; elevated levels of HIV-related stigma; moderate levels of distress; high self-efficacy with daily medication self-management; great compliance with clinicians’ treatment plans; high treatment satisfaction; high perceived empathy; and high perceived cultural competence. Experience of social support (i.e., mMOS-SS scores) differed significantly by birth region. Experience of HIV-related stigma (i.e., IA-RSS scores) differed significantly by birth region, age, and language. Experience of distress (i.e., K6 scores) differed significantly by sexual orientation. Experience of treatment satisfaction (i.e., HIVTSQ scores) differed significantly by birth region and age. No significant differences were identified by time for any measure. Conclusion Overall, participants expressed positive experiences around treatment and care, alongside comparably lower perceptions of social support, internalized stigma, and distress, potentially underscoring a need to embed targeted, well-funded, and accessible mental health support within HIV care models.

IntroductionThe life expectancy of people living with HIV receiving effective combination antiretroviral therapy is approaching that of the general population and non AIDS-defining age-related comorbidities are becoming of greater concern. In order to support healthy aging of this population, we set out to explore the association between multimorbidity (defined as presence of 2 or more non AIDS-defining comorbidities) and quality of life (QoL).MethodsWe performed a cross-sectional analysis using data from the Correlates of Healthy Aging in Geriatric HIV (CHANGE HIV) study, a Canadian cohort of people living with HIV age 65 years and older. Study participants completed two QoL modules, the general QoL and health related QoL (HR-QoL).Results433 participants were included in the analysis with a median age of 69 years (interquartile range, IQR 67–72). The median number of comorbidities among study participants was 3 (IQR 2–4), with 78% meeting the definition of multimorbidity. General QoL scores (median 66, IQR 58–76) were lower than HR-QoL scores (median 71, IQR 61–83) and were not associated with multimorbidity after adjusting for age, sex, relationship status, household income, exercise, tobacco smoking history, malnutrition, time since HIV diagnosis, and HIV-related stigma. In contrast, multimorbidity was associated with lower HR-QoL (adjusted β = −4.57, 95% CI −8.86, −0.28) after accounting for the same variables. Several social vulnerabilities (not having a partner, low household income), health behaviours (lower engagement in exercise, smoking), and HIV-related factors (HIV stigma, longer time since HIV diagnosis) were also associated with lower QoL.DiscussionOverall, our study demonstrated a high burden of multimorbidity among older adults living with HIV in Canada, which has a negative impact on HR-QoL. Interventions aimed at preventing and managing non-AIDS-defining comorbidities should be assessed in people living with HIV to determine whether this can improve their HR-QoL.

Evidenciado na atualidade que as condições de trabalho podem contribuir para alterações da saúde física e mental dos indivíduos, estudos apontam a relação destes transtornos com a insatisfação, falta de reconhecimento profissional, desgaste provocado pelo contato direto com o paciente, as recompensas insuficientes, a falta de autonomia, as relações interpessoais disfuncionais, os conflitos de valores, a falta de recursos humanos e materiais, a longa jornada de trabalho, a baixa remuneração, o estreitamento do mercado de trabalho, a alta exposição a riscos ocupacionais e a indefinição do papel profissional. A pesquisa emergiu das vivências iniciais do projeto PET-Saúde Interprofissionalidade. Objetivo: Analisar níveis de estresse entre os profissionais de um Centro de Saúde da Família (CSF), através da aplicação do teste de Lipp - Inventário de Sintomas de Stress Lipp (ISSL). Metodologia: Realizou-se a pesquisa quantitativa, descritiva, transversal. Participaram da pesquisa 30 profissionais que atuavam no serviço. Resultados: Dos profissionais avaliados, 6,7% apresentaram-se na fase de alerta, 56,6% em fase de resistência e 16,7% em fasede exaustão. Os sintomas mais identificados foram os físicos, uma vez que, os sintomas psicológicos encontrados são intrínsecos e identificados mediante informações dadas pelos profissionais. Conclusão: Desta forma, torna se necessário a realização de estratégias para prevenção e controle de transtornos que acometem e/ou tendem a acometer estes profissionais, melhorando, assim, sua qualidade de vida, bem como a assistência aos usuários.

Introduction Chronic cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is very frequent in people living with HIV (PLWH). High anti-CMV IgG titres, which may be linked to transient CMV replication, have been associated with earlier mortality, CD8 T-cell expansion, lower CD4/CD8 ratio and increased T-cell senescence. We previously showed that anti-CMV IgG titres correlated with gut permeability in PLWH on antiretroviral therapy (ART), which was associated with microbial translocation, systemic inflammation and non-infectious/non-AIDS comorbidities. Letermovir, a novel anti-CMV drug with a good safety profile, was recently approved for anti-CMV prophylaxis in allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients. A drastic and selective reduction of both low-grade replication and clinically significant CMV infections, combined with an improved immune reconstitution have been reported. In vitro, letermovir prevented CMV-induced epithelial disruption in intestinal tissues. Based on these findings, we aim to assess whether letermovir could inhibit CMV subclinical replication in CMV-seropositive PLWH receiving ART and, in turn, decrease CMV-associated gut damage and inflammation.Method and analysis We will conduct a multi-centre, open-label, randomised, controlled clinical trial, including a total of 60 CMV-seropositive ART-treated PLWH for at least 3 years, with a viral load 400 cells/µL. Forty participants will be randomised to receive letermovir for 14 weeks and 20 participants will receive standard of care (ART) alone. Plasma, pheripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs), and stool samples will be collected. Colon biopsies will be collected in an optional substudy. We will assess the effect of letermovir on gut damage, microbial translocation, inflammation and HIV reservoir size.Ethics and dissemination The study was approved by Health Canada and the Research Ethics Boards of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC-REB, protocol number: MP37-2022-8295). Results will be made available through publications in open access peer-reviewed journals and through the CIHR/CTN website.Trial registration number NCT05362916.

Abstract Introduction Randomized trials and observational studies have consistently reported rates of sustained virological response (SVR), equivalent to hepatitis C virus (HCV) cure, as high as 95% following treatment with direct‐acting antiviral (DAA) treatment in individuals with HIV and HCV co‐infection. However, large studies assessing whether SVR rates differ according to demographic and clinical strata are lacking. Additionally, the SVR rates reported in the literature were typically computed in non‐random samples of individuals with available post‐DAA HCV‐RNA measures. Here, we aimed to estimate the probability of SVR after DAA treatment initiation in persons with HIV and HCV co‐infection overall and by demographic and clinical characteristics with and without adjustment for missing HCV‐RNA testing. Methods We included adults with HIV‐HCV co‐infection who received DAA treatment between 2014 and 2020 in HepCAUSAL, an international collaboration of cohorts from Europe and North America. We estimated the proportions of DAA recipients who had documented SVR (defined as an undetectable HCV‐RNA at least 12 weeks after the end of DAA treatment) overall and by strata defined by age, sex, presence of cirrhosis, calendar period, mode of HIV acquisition, CD4 cell count and HCV genotype at DAA treatment. We then compared these rates with those obtained using the parametric g‐formula to impute SVR status for individuals with no SVR assessment. Results and Discussion A total of 4527 individuals who initiated DAA treatment (88% males, median [IQR] age 56 [50, 62] years) were included. Of the total of 642 (14%) individuals had no HCV‐RNA test on or after 12 weeks after the end of treatment. The overall observed and g‐formula imputed SVR rates were 93% (95% CI 93, 94) and 94% (95% CI 92, 95), respectively. SVR estimates were similarly high across all strata. A substantial proportion of individuals who received DAA treatment were never assessed for SVR post‐DAA and strategies for more systematic routine HCV‐RNA testing should be considered. Conclusions Our estimates with and without adjustment for missing HCV‐RNA testing indicate SVR rates of approximately 95%, like those reported in clinical trials.

Abstract Health systems have improved their abilities to identify, diagnose, treat and, increasingly, achieve viral suppression among people living with HIV (PLHIV). Despite these advances, a higher burden of multimorbidity and poorer health-related quality of life are reported by many PLHIV in comparison to people without HIV. Stigma and discrimination further exacerbate these poor outcomes. A global multidisciplinary group of HIV experts developed a consensus statement identifying key issues that health systems must address in order to move beyond the HIV field’s longtime emphasis on viral suppression to instead deliver integrated, person-centered healthcare for PLHIV throughout their lives.

Objetivo: analisar a ocorrência da agressão verbal e fatores associados ao fenômeno contra trabalhadores de saúde. Método: estudo misto, explanatório sequencial, desenvolvido de 2016 a 2019, com 647 trabalhadores de serviços de saúde das regiões Oeste e Extremo Oeste de Santa Catarina. Utilizaram-se o Survey Questionnaire Workplace Violence in the Health Sector e entrevistas semiestruturadas. Realizaram-se as análises estatística inferencial e temática, respectivamente. Resultados: dos participantes, 307 (47,4%) relataram terem sofrido ao menos um episódio de agressão verbal. Esse evento foi associado à função do trabalhador, ao contato físico com paciente, ao reconhecimento no trabalho e à preocupação com a violência no trabalho. Os depoimentos apontam os impactos na saúde dos trabalhadores e a fragilidade das condutas após os episódios. Conclusão: a agressão verbal é uma violência típica dos serviços públicos de saúde, com vítimas que possuem um perfil comum e instituições com dificuldade de manejo deste problema.

BackgroundWomen living with HIV (WLHIV) have a high risk of anal cancer. Identifying risk factors for anal HPV 16 infection, the most significant risk factor for anal cancer, is essential for prevention and screening strategies.MethodsIn the EVVA Cohort study, 151 WLHIV had cervical and anal HPV testing with genotyping every 6 months for 2 years, while demographic and clinical data were collected via questionnaires and chart reviews. Here, we present results of baseline data analyzed using multivariable logistic regression.ResultsAmong 150 women with adequate HPV test results at baseline, HPV 16 DNA was detected anally in 23 (15.3%; 95%CI:10.4-22.1) and cervically in 5 (3.3%; 95%CI:1.4-7.8). In multivariable analysis, current smoking (OR = 6.0; 95%CI: 1.5-23.9), nadir CD4 count ≤ 200 cells/μL (OR = 8.4; 95%CI: 2.0-34.3), prevalent cervical HPV 16 (OR = 14.7; 95%CI: 1.0-222.5) and anogenital herpes in previous 6 months (OR = 9.8, 95%CI: 1.7-56.8) were associated with prevalent anal HPV 16.ConclusionsKnowledge of risk factors can help identify WLHIV at greatest risk of anal HPV 16 infection and, potentially, developing subsequent anal cancer. Identification of the subgroup of these women in whom HPV 16 persists could be an early step in the algorithm of anal cancer screening.

The Correlates of Healthy Aging in Geriatric HIV (CHANGE HIV) study, CTN 314, is the first Canadian cohort of people living with HIV aged 65 years and older. The cohort was established with the purpose of characterizing the multidimensional health status of this population and identifying factors influencing healthy aging. The study builds on the World Health Organization (WHO) Aging and Health conceptual framework, generating a comprehensive profile of health domains (physical, social, mental health, cognitive function, and quality of life), health determinants (biologic, personal, and environmental), and HIV-specific factors that may interact with and influence health in people aging with HIV. The data for the first 353 participants are presented, focusing on sociodemographic factors, comorbidities, coinfections, frailty, cognitive function, loneliness, and resilience using a sex/gender stratified analysis. The cohort thus far is 91% men and the median age is 70 years (range from 65 to 85). Several vulnerabilities were observed, including a high prevalence of comorbidities and frailty. Women especially faced financial insecurity and precarious social structures; a large proportion live alone and only 6% are married or in steady relationships. Identifying strategies to address these vulnerabilities will empower people aging with HIV to optimize their health, quality of life, and independence.

Background: With anti-inflammatory properties, cannabinoids may be a potential strategy to reduce immune activation in people living with HIV (PLWH) but more information on their safety and tolerability is needed. Methods: We conducted an open-label interventional pilot study at the McGill University Health Centre in Montreal, Canada. PLWH were randomized to oral Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC): cannabidiol (CBD) combination (THC 2.5 mg/CBD 2.5 mg) or CBD-only capsules (CBD 200 mg). Individuals titrated doses as tolerated to a maximum daily dose THC 15 mg/CBD 15 mg or 800 mg CBD, respectively, for 12 weeks. The primary outcome was the percentage of participants without any significant toxicity based on the WHO toxicity scale (Grades 0–2 scores). Results: Out of ten individuals, eight completed the study. Two from the CBD-only arm were withdrawn for safety concerns: phlebotomy aggravating pre-existing anemia and severe hepatitis on 800 mg CBD with newly discovered pancreatic adenocarcinoma, respectively. Seven did not have any significant toxicity. Cannabinoids did not alter hematology/biochemistry profiles. CD4 count, CD4/CD8 ratio, and HIV suppression remained stable. Most adverse effects were mild-moderate. Conclusions: In PLWH, cannabinoids seem generally safe and well-tolerated, though larger studies are needed. Screening for occult liver pathology should be performed and hepatic enzymes monitored, especially with high CBD doses.

Objetivo: analisar a associação do índice de massa corporal aos desfechos clínicos dos casos confirmados de COVID-19. Método: estudo epidemiológico, com dados secundários de 618 casos confirmados de COVID-19, notificados de março a dezembro de 2020, em um município do Oeste de Santa Catarina, Brasil. Realizou-se análise inferencial entre o índice de massa corporal e aspectos clínicos e assistenciais. Resultados: encontrou-se associação significativa entre índice de massa corporal e os sintomas: dispneia (p=0,003), diminuição do apetite (p=0,004), coriza (p=0,039) e diarreia (p=0,029). Houve associação com as comorbidades prévias (p=0,000) e piores médias de saturação (p=0,00). Os indivíduos obesos apresentaram maior probabilidade de: internação em enfermaria (p=0,027); internação em unidade de terapia intensiva (p=0,002); e óbito (p=0,00). Conclusão: evidencia-se a necessidade de ações educativas efetivas destinadas à prevenção e tratamento da obesidade, visando à qualidade de vida e mitigação do agravamento clínico dessa população na ocorrência de patologias como a COVID-19.

Abstract Background Hepatitis B (HBV) and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) share common risk factors for exposure. Co-infected patients have an increased liver-related mortality risk and may have accelerated HIV progression. The epidemiology and demographic characteristics of HIV-HBV co-infection in Canada remain poorly defined. We compared the demographic and clinical characteristics and factors associated with advanced hepatic fibrosis between HIV and HIV-HBV co-infected patients. Methods A retrospective cohort analysis was conducted using data from the Canadian Observational Cohort (CANOC) Collaboration, including eight sites from British Columbia, Quebec, and Ontario. Eligible participants were HIV-infected patients who initiated combination ARV between January 1, 2000 and December 14, 2014. Demographic and clinical characteristics were compared between HIV-HBV co-infected and HIV-infected groups using chi-square or Fisher exact tests for categorical variables, and Wilcoxon’s Rank Sum test for continuous variables. Liver fibrosis was estimated by the AST to Platelet Ratio Index (APRI). Results HBV status and APRI values were available for 2419 cohort participants. 199 (8%) were HBV co-infected. Compared to HIV-infected participants, HIV-HBV co-infected participants were more likely to use injection drugs (28% vs. 21%, p = 0.03) and be HCV-positive (31%, vs. 23%, p = 0.02). HIV-HBV co-infected participants had lower baseline CD4 T cell counts (188 cells/mm3, IQR: 120–360) compared to 235 cells/mm3 in HIV-infected participants (IQR: 85–294) (p = 0.0002) and higher baseline median APRI scores (0.50 vs. 0.37, p

BackgroundAdherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) remains problematic. Regular monitoring of its barriers is clinically recommended, however, patient-provider communication around adherence is often inadequate. Our team thus decided to develop a new electronically administered patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) of barriers to ART adherence (the I-Score) to systematically capture this data for physician consideration in routine HIV care. To prepare for a controlled definitive trial to test the I-Score intervention, a pilot study was designed. Its primary objectives are to evaluate patient and physician perceptions of the I-Score intervention and its implementation strategy.MethodsThis one-arm, 6-month study will adopt a mixed method type 3 implementation-effectiveness hybrid design and be conducted at the Chronic Viral Illness Service of the McGill University Health Centre (Montreal, Canada). Four HIV physicians and 32 of their HIV patients with known or suspected adherence problems will participate. The intervention will involve having patients complete the I-Score through a smartphone application (Opal), before meeting with their physician. Both patients and physicians will have access to the I-Score results, for consideration during the clinic visits at Times 1, 2 (3 months), and 3 (6 months). The implementation strategy will focus on stakeholder involvement, education, and training; promoting the intervention's adaptability; and hiring an Application Manager to facilitate implementation. Implementation, patient, and service outcomes will be collected (Times 1-2-3). The primary outcome is the intervention's acceptability to patients and physicians. Qualitative data obtained, in part, through physician focus groups (Times 2-3) and patient interviews (Times 2-3) will help evaluate the implementation strategy and inform any methodological adaptations.DiscussionThis study will help plan a definitive trial to test the efficacy of the I-Score intervention. Abstract Background Gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (MSM) are disproportionately affected by HIV in Canada. Combination antiretroviral therapy has been shown to dramatically decrease progression to AIDS, premature death and HIV transmission. However, there are no comprehensive data regarding combination antiretroviral therapy outcomes among this population. We sought to identify socio-demographic and clinical correlates of viral suppression and rebound. Methods Our analysis included MSM participants in the Canadian Observational Cohort, a multi-site cohort of HIV-positive adults from Canada’s three most populous provinces, aged ≥18 years who first initiated combination antiretroviral therapy between 2000 and 2011. We used accelerated failure time models to identify factors predicting time to suppression (2 measures 200 copies/mL ≥30 days apart). Results Of 2,858 participants, 2,448 (86 %) achieved viral suppression in a median time of 5 months (Q1–Q3: 3–7 months). Viral suppression was significantly associated with later calendar year of antiretroviral therapy initiation, no history of injection drug use, lower baseline viral load, being on an initial regimen consisting of non-nucleoside reverse-transcriptase inhibitors, and older age. Among those who suppressed, 295 (12 %) experienced viral rebound. This was associated with earlier calendar year of antiretroviral therapy initiation, injection drug use history, younger age, higher baseline CD4 cell count, and living in British Columbia. Conclusions Further strategies are required to optimize combination antiretroviral therapy outcomes in men who have sex with men in Canada, specifically targeting younger MSM and those with a history of injection drug use.

Introduction. Low levels of nasal NO have been associated with increased propensity to rhinosinusitis and respiratory tract infections. Our objective was to describe nasal NO levels in HIV-infected individuals versus healthy controls and determine possible risk factors for reduced nasal NO levels. Materials and Methods. HIV-infected individuals and healthy controls were recruited. Participants underwent nasal NO testing by standardized methods using a CLD88 chemiluminescence analyzer and completed the Sinonasal Outcome Test-20 (SNOT-20) on symptoms of rhinosinusitis. Results. Participants included 41 HIV-infected individuals with suppressed VL on antiretroviral therapy (ART group), 5 HIV-infected individuals with detectable VL off ART (viremic group), and 12 healthy controls (HC group). Mean nasal NO level was 253 (±77) nL/min in the ART group, 213 (±48) nL/min in the viremic group, and 289 (±68) nL/min in the HC group (p=0.133; ANOVA). There was no correlation between nasal NO level and VL in viremic individuals (r=-0.200; p=0.747). Differences were observed in mean total points on the SNOT-20 which were 19 (±16)/100, 18 (±26)/100, and 4 (±4)/100 in the ART, viremic, and HC groups, respectively (p=0.013; ANOVA). Conclusion. Healthy individuals, HIV patients on ART, and viremic individuals off ART display similar nasal NO levels. However, rhinosinusitis symptoms remain prominent despite ART-treatment.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) currently infects approximately 250,000 individuals in Canada and causes more years of life lost than any other infectious disease in the country. In August 2011, new therapies were approved by Health Canada that have achieved higher response rates among those treated, but are poorly tolerated. By 2014/2015, short-course, well-tolerated treatments with cure rates >95% will be available. However, treatment uptake is poor due to structural, financial, geographical, cultural and social barriers. As such, ‘Barriers to access to HCV care in Canada’ is a crucial topic that must be addressed to decrease HCV disease burden and potentially eliminate HCV in Canada. Understanding how to better care for HCV-infected individuals requires integration across multiple disciplines including researchers, clinical services and policy makers to address the major populations affected by HCV including people who inject drugs, baby boomers, immigrants and Aboriginal and/or First Nations people. In 2012, the National CIHR Research Training Program in Hepatitis C organized the 1st Canadian Symposium on Hepatitis C Virus (CSHCV) in Montreal, Quebec. The 2nd CSHCV was held in 2013 in Victoria, British Columbia. Both symposia were highly successful, attracting leading international faculty with excellent attendance leading to dialogue and knowledge translation among attendees of diverse backgrounds. The current article summarizes the 3rd CSHCV, held February 2014, in Toronto, Ontario.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) coinfection occurs in 20% to 30% of Canadians living with HIV, and is responsible for a heavy burden of morbidity and mortality. HIV-HCV management is more complex due to the accelerated progression of liver disease, the timing and nature of antiretroviral and HCV therapy, mental health and addictions management, socioeconomic obstacles and drug-drug interactions between new HCV direct-acting antiviral therapies and antiretroviral regimens.

Background. Hepatitis C virus (HCV) coinfection occurs in 20–30% of Canadians living with HIV and is responsible for a heavy burden of morbidity and mortality. Purpose. To update national standards for management of HCV-HIV coinfected adults in the Canadian context with evolving evidence for and accessibility of effective and tolerable DAA therapies. The document addresses patient workup and treatment preparation, antiviral recommendations overall and in specific populations, and drug-drug interactions. Methods. A standing working group with HIV-HCV expertise was convened by The Canadian Institute of Health Research HIV Trials Network to review recently published HCV antiviral data and update Canadian HIV-HCV Coinfection Guidelines. Results. The gap in sustained virologic response between HCV monoinfection and HIV-HCV coinfection has been eliminated with newer HCV antiviral regimens. All coinfected individuals should be assessed for interferon-free, Direct Acting Antiviral HCV therapy. Regimens vary in content, duration, and success based largely on genotype. Reimbursement restrictions forcing the use of pegylated interferon is not acceptable if optimal patient care is to be provided. Discussion. Recommendations may not supersede individual clinical judgement. Treatment advances published since December 2015 are not considered in this document.

Concomitant HIV and hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a common yet complex coinfection. The present document is a practical guide for treating HCV infection in people coinfected with HIV. Effective antiretroviral therapies have prolonged survival rates for HIV-infected people over the past decade, which have made latent complications of HCV major causes of morbidity and mortality in these patients. Advances in the treatment of HCV (eg, combined pegylated interferon and ribavirin) offer the possibility of eradicating HCV infection in coinfected persons. The treatment of HCV must be considered in all cases. Intensive management of the adverse effects of HCV treatment is one of the factors for the success of these therapies. HCV eradication is predicted to decrease the mortality associated with coinfection and reduce the toxicity of HIV treatment.

BACKGROUND & AIMS:Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a significant global health issue that leads to 350,000 preventable deaths annually due to associated cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Immigrants and refugees (migrants) originating from intermediate/high HCV endemic countries are likely at increased risk for HCV infection due to HCV exposure in their countries of origin. The aim of this study was to estimate the HCV seroprevalence of the migrant population living in low HCV prevalence countries. METHODS:Four electronic databases were searched from database inception until June 17, 2014 for studies reporting the prevalence of HCV antibodies among migrants. Seroprevalence estimates were pooled with a random-effect model and were stratified by age group, region of origin and migration status and a meta-regression was modeled to explore heterogeneity. RESULTS:Data from 50 studies representing 38,635 migrants from all world regions were included. The overall anti-HCV prevalence (representing previous and current infections) was 1.9% (95% CI, 1.4-2.7%, I2 96.1). Older age and region of origin, particularly Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, and Eastern Europe were the strongest predictors of HCV seroprevalence. The estimated HCV seroprevalence of migrants from these regions was >2% and is higher than that reported for most host populations. CONCLUSION:Adult migrants originating from Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa and Eastern Europe are at increased risk for HCV and may benefit from targeted HCV screening.
