17. Fission Gas Release from Irradiated Uranium-Plutonium Nitride Fuel.

Abstract

The results of an investigation of fission gas release from mixed nitride fuel after irradiation to maximum burnup 7.5% h. a. in 10 experimental FA in BN-600 are reported. It is shown that gas release commences at burnup >2% h.a. and increases with increasing burnup. The burnup dependence of gas release for mixed and uranium nitride fuel coincide quite well. The fission gas beneath the fuel-rod cladding consists of three basic components: xenon, helium, and krypton. The content of the remaining gases (N2, Ar, O2, CO2) does not exceed tenths of a percent. Xenon has the highest specific release, followed by helium and krypton. Helium has the highest relative release (>40%). Xenon and krypton have almost identical release not exceeding 20% for most of the investigated fuel rods. A higher release of fission gas is associated with either an increase of the fuel temperature (>1500°C) or features of fuel microstructure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) recently established a Coordinated Research Project (CRP) on “Sodium Properties and Safe Operation of Experimental Facilities in Support of the Development and Deployment of Sodium-cooled Fast Reactors - NAPRO”, to be carried out in the period 2013 – 2017. Eleven institutions from ten Member States participate in this CRP. The complete scope of this CRP is covered by three work packages. A specific work package (WP1), under the coordination of ANL (USA), is focused on the compilation and expert assessment of data sets of Na physical and chemical properties, as well as correlations for pressure drops and heat transfer in Na facilities. A second work package (WP2), under the coordination of IPPE (Russian Federation), addresses the compilation, evaluation and development of best practices and guidelines for the design, operation and maintenance of Na facilities. Finally, Work Package 3 (WP3), coordinated by CEA (France), concentrates on the compilation and development of guidelines and rules for the safe operation of Na facilities, including the prevention, detection and mitigation of Na leaks and fires. Finally, this work presents some examples of the principal results obtained so far by WP 1.

Abstract

Authors refer a case of a 28-year-old, otherwise healthy, woman experiencing cyclic pain and bleeding from a navel lesion for three months. Gynecological symptoms were completely absent. Skin biopsy confirmed a cutaneous form of endometriosis confirmed by sonographic examination. No other foci of endometriosis were found in this patient, surgical treatment was curative. The authors present the important differential diagnosis of these manifestations and the need of interdisciplinary approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
