Abstract

Due to its location, Sicily has always represented an important biogeographic bridge between floras of temperate and tropical climates as well as between those of the western and eastern Mediterranean. Its central position in the Mediterranean was also key factor of a millenary history of human settlements which resulted in profound landscape changes in the past, but even at present human pressure continues to be very heavy. In spite of this, Sicily is part of one of the 10 most important hotspots in Mediterranean Basin, thanks to plant richness and endemism (Médail & Quézel 1999: Conserv. Biol. 13(6): 1510-1513). The bryophyte flora, including ca. 600 taxa (almost half of Italian bryoflora), is, as well as vascular flora, very rich and likewise threatened. A first list of 182 endangered species of Sicily and small islands around it was compiled by Campisi & al. (2003: Intern. Sem. on Harmonization of Red Lists for threatened species, pp. 241-275), but a precise category of threat was not assigned to taxa. The establishment of a complete Red List is fundamental to bryophyte conservation in Sicily a fortiori because it is an Italian region with legislative and administrative autonomy in the field of environmental protection. The project, here presented, has just been started with regard to liverworts and hornworts. It takes into account specific guidelines for bryophytes as well as the IUCN criteria. As to the latter, however, it was considered appropriate to adopt some changes to avoid an overestimate of endangered species, following a procedure similar to the one adopted by González-Mancebo & al. (2012: Biodivers. Conserv. 21: 3613-3636.) for the compilation of Red List of the Canary Islands. For assigning threat categories, therefore, we opted for scaling the thresholds set of the Extent of Occurrence (EOO) and of the location number. Besides a red list the project provides for the realization of atlas of top 50 bryophyte taxa for which sheets with description, general and Sicilian distribution, ecology, EOO and AOO, the main threats and status in Sicily will be reported. Some examples of sheets of rare liverworts in the island are illustrated.

9. Dermoscopic features and patterns of poromas: a multicentre observational case-control study conducted by the International Dermoscopy Society.

Abstract

Background Poromas are benign cutaneous sweat gland tumours that are challenging to identify. The dermoscopic features of poromas are not well characterized. Objective To determine the clinical-dermoscopic features of poromas. Methods Cross-sectional, observational study of 113 poromas and 106 matched control lesions from 16 contributors and eight countries. Blinded reviewers evaluated the clinical and dermoscopic features present in each clinical and dermoscopic image. Results Poromas were most commonly non-pigmented (85.8%), papules (35.4%) and located on non-acral sites (65.5%). In multivariate analysis, dermoscopic features associated with poroma included white interlacing areas around vessels (OR: 7.9, 95% CI: 1.9-32.5, P = 0.004), yellow structureless areas (OR: 2.5, 95% CI: 1.1-6.0, P = 0.04), milkyred globules (OR: 3.9, 95% CI: 1.4-11.1, P = 0.01) and poorly visualized vessels (OR: 33.3, 95% CI: 1.9-586.5, P = 0.02). The presence of branched vessels with rounded endings was positively associated with poromas but did not reach statistical significance (OR: 2.4, 95% CI: 0.8-6.5, P = 0.10). The presence of any of these five features was associated with a sensitivity and specificity of 62.8% and 82.0%, respectively. Conclusion We identified dermoscopic features that are specific to the diagnosis of poroma. Overall, however, the prevalence of these features was low. Significant clinical and dermoscopic variability is a hallmark of these uncommon tumours, which are most prevalent on non-acral sites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

While many benefits can result from development of the Athabasca Oil Sands deposits, the associated technological and industrial growth has altered both the physical and social environment in the region. Research in the Human System of Alberta Oil Sands Environmental Research Program is designed to assess implications of this endeavour for local communities and to anticipate long-term changes in the region, in order to provide information relevant to planning of future oil sands development. One of the objectives of Human System research is to better understand the relationship between people and their natural and manmade environment, a dimension of which is the relationship between perceptions of biophysical environment and human behaviour. The significance of understanding environmental perceptions rests in their potential to influence human attitudes toward environment and ultimately human behaviour. For instance, different perceptions of environmental characteristics, such as town layout, bush, wildlife, open spaces, etc., may have a bearing on the manner in whiGh people will utilize available resources. This, in turn, may affect the degree to which they will impact their environment, and could be of importance to policy areas as management of resource use by the people, and the planning and design of new urban centres or recreational areas in the oil sands region. Consequently, the purpose of the present study was to review the current state of knowledge on the effects that perceptions of biophysical environment may have on human behaviour. From that perspective, the study was also to define the conceptual and empirical issues involved in the relationship between people and their changing biophysical environment in the Athabasca Oil Sands region. This endeavour was to facilitate the development of possible future field research projects related to resource management and planning.
