Melts with rhyolite compositions originate from partial melting of crustal rocks or extensive differentiation of basaltic melts, at temperatures in the range of 800 °C. Accordingly, they are confined to the shallow continental crust. Nevertheless, experimental studies have demonstrated that dacite-rhyolite melts can be generated at higher temperature (> 1000°c) and pressure (>2 GPa), by partial melting of continental crustal lithotypes, but direct evidence for their occurrence has never been found. This implies that rhyolite melts may be produced at mantle conditions either by subduction of sedimentary material or exhumation of subducted continental crust.Ephemeral rhyolite melt inclusions were found preserved in peridotite xenoliths from Tallante (Betic Cordillera, southern Spain) that are remnants of a supra-subduction mantle wedge. Here, the interaction of silica-rich melts with peridotite generated hybrid mantle domains, characterized by the occurrence of millimetre-sizes felsic veins with crust-like Sr-Nd-Pb-O- isotope compositions. The “Tallante” composite xenoliths were found among a wide population of peridotitic xenoliths, and display extreme compositional and isotopic heterogeneities both within the ambient peridotite and within the felsic veins. The latter consist of orthopyroxene, plagioclase, and quartz, and they are separated from the surrounding peridotite by an orthopyroxene-rich reaction zone. In their mineral phases, rhyolite glass inclusions and interstitial films associated to quartz crystals were observed. Petrological evidence and thermodynamic modelling indicate that rhyolite melts were originated by partial melting of near an-hydrous garnet-bearing metapelites at temperatures above 1000 °C. Partial melting was likely triggered by near-isothermal decompression during rapid exhumation of previously subducted crustal slivers. The melts reacted with the ambient lithospheric mantle at lower temperature (900 °C) and produced orthopyroxene, followed by plagioclase, quartz, and phlogopite. On the basis of chemical characteristics, it is hypothesized that potassic (HK-calc-alkalic to shoshonitic) and ultrapotassic magmas may originate from metasomatic mantle sources generated from the interaction of crustal rhyolitic melts with mantle peridotite.

Time-series crystallization/dissolution experiments were conducted on a natural potassic basalt seeded with bytownitic plagioclases (Plg) at atmospheric pressure, in air, at 1180- 1240 °C and isothermal dwell time up to 20 hours. Plg-seed presence promotes the early formation of new-Plg, dampening the clinopyroxene (Cpx) crystallization. New-Plgs grow at a rate from 10-6 up to 10-8 cm·s-1 as the dwell time increases. Seeds overgrow at similar rate. Cpx crystallizes with a delay of at least 3 hours; this has a significant impact on the composition of both residual melt and new-Plgs. For undercooling >35 °C the Cpx delay causes a strong supersaturation of this phase in the melt resulting in a decrease in the new-Plg nucleation rate by 2 orders of magnitude in the 3 h-experiment. In the 15h-run, Cpx coarsening and the decrease of crystallinity suggest the achievement of a near-equilibrium conditions. Cpx growth rate is in the order of 10-7 cm·s-1 showing very limited variation. Finally, for the investigated superheating (5-15 °C) only the long lasting experiments allows an estimation of Plg dissolution rate (10-9 cm·s-1) although changes in the melt composition are already detectable in the 3h-runs. As a whole our results suggest that in natural systems, the takeover of antecrysts/ xenocrysts by a magma can induce on a short time scales, changes in its initial nucleation behavior with remarkable petrological implications for the solidification paths and eruptive dynamics of potassic magmatic systems., Periodico di Mineralogia, Vol. 92 No. 1 (2023)

We study the time evolution of a $\mathcal {P}\mathcal {T}$ -symmetric, non-Hermitian quantum system for which the associated phase space is compact. We focus on the simplest non-trivial example of such a Hamiltonian, which is linear in the angular momentum operators. In order to describe the evolution of the system, we use a particular disentangling decomposition of the evolution operator, which remains numerically accurate even in the vicinity of the Exceptional Point. We then analyze how the non-Hermitian part of the Hamiltonian affects the time evolution of two archetypical quantum states, coherent and Dicke states. For that purpose we calculate the Husimi distribution or Q function and study its evolution in phase space. For coherent states, the characteristics of the evolution equation of the Husimi function agree with the trajectories of the corresponding angular momentum expectation values. This allows to consider these curves as the trajectories of a classical system. For other types of quantum states, e.g. Dicke states, the equivalence of characteristics and trajectories of expectation values is lost.

Textural and compositional changes of clinopyroxene and plagioclase crystals from mafic alkaline magmas are unequivocally related to specific dynamic processes, which extend over a broad range of spatial and temporal scales. Decoding the mechanisms controlling the growth of clinopyroxene and plagioclase crystals may play a key role for interpreting the final crystal cargo of variably undercooled magmas from active alkaline volcanoes. In this context, isothermal-isobaric and undercooling (i.e., cooling rate and decompression) experiments were conducted on primitive basalts from Mt. Etna and Stromboli volcanoes (Sicily, Italy). Clinopyroxene and plagioclase crystals were obtained at variable pressures (30-300 MPa), temperatures (1,050-1,150 °C), volatile contents (0-4.4 wt.% H2O and 0-0.2 wt.% CO2), and crystallization times (0.25-72 h). Compositional and textural features (i.e., length of major and minor axes, surface area per unit volume, area fraction, and growth rate) of the experimental charges were determined to constrain the key parameters governing the crystallization process. The correlation between growth rate and other system parameters, such as degree of undercooling, crystallization temperature, crystallization time, melt composition/structure (NBO/T) and melt-H2O concentration, was investigated via principal component analysis (PCA). Results point out that the crystal growth rate is primary controlled by experimental time and only subordinately by the degree of undercooling. Progressive decay of crystal growth rate over time is due to the transition between diffusion-controlled (skeletal and acicular morphologies) and interface-controlled (blocky, prismatic, and tabular morphologies) growth regimes. The growth rate-time relationship derived in laboratory is interpolated with natural textures from crystal size distribution (CSD) analysis of products recently erupted at Mt. Etna and Stromboli. Results indicate that the crystallization of clinopyroxene and plagioclase microlites is extremely fast, on the order of ~100-101 min. This temporal information allows to better constrain the cooling-decompression paths of magmas accelerating within the uppermost part of the plumbing system, providing new insights for the modeling of conduit dynamics.

This study investigates the potential use of micro-Raman spectroscopy for the quantification of water in ultrapotassic silicate glasses. A calibration was developed using experimental phono-tephritic glasses with water content ranging from ~ 1 to ~ 3 wt%. The calibration curve showed a typical direct proportionality between water content and the ratio of high- (3100–3750 cm−1) and low-wavenumber (100–1500 cm−1) spectral regions, with a linear fit coefficient m = 1.74. The comparison with the m coefficients available in literature for other silicate compositions showed a deviation of our composition as a function of some major oxides such as FeO, TiO2 and K2O, highlighting the possible influence of the polymerization degree (NBO/T: non-bridging oxygens per tetrahedron) on m coefficient. In this respect, we observed a linear relationship between m coefficient and NBO/T and a positive correlation between the area underneath the silicate region (100–1500 cm−1) and NBO/T for the phono-tephrite of this study and for other compositions spanning from basalts to phonolite and rhyolites available in literature. For ultrapotassic natural and experimental glasses characterized by the presence of CO2, documented by the carbonate peak at 1062–1092 cm−1, it has been possible to extrapolate the CO2 content by using the model of Morizet et al. (2013) obtaining values of ~ 1.1 ± 0.3 and ~ 1.7 ± 0.2 wt%, respectively. The obtained m coefficient was applied to estimate water content of natural phono-tephritic glasses belonging to the Colli Albani Volcanic District. Moreover, we estimated water content also for some natural K-foiditic glasses from the same volcanic district. Since the m coefficient results to be strongly dependent on the chemical composition of the sample of interest, the coefficient estimated for the phono-tephrites of this study could result in significant overestimation or underestimation of the water content of the Colli Albani Volcanic District K-foiditic natural samples. Thus, we extrapolated the m coefficient for the K-foiditic samples by means of an equation obtained in this study as function of the polymerization degree (NBO/T).

This study reports on the discovery that the podium of the archaic temple in the Forum Boarium of Rome was built with a previously unknown tuff, of non-local origin. On the basis of detailed comparative petrographic and geochemical tests, it has been established that the blocks employed to build the earliest temple so far discovered in Rome belonged to a distinctive facies of tufo lionato that had never been characterized before, in contrast to what was reported by previous excavators. The blocks must have come from a quarry in the Anio River Valley, several kilometers from the construction site, making the Sant'Omobono temple the earliest known Roman building that extensively employed imported materials. The metrology of the blocks is also unique. This particular volcanic stone was probably chosen for its much greater resistance to weathering compared to the local tuffs, a trait that was essential in the flood-prone location, not far from the Tiber riverbank, where the temple was situated. The labor-intensive sourcing may also explain the dainty size of the temple podium in comparison to other sixth-century bc temples in the region. The choice made by the builders indicates far greater sophistication and technical awareness than they have generally been credited with. The new discovery is placed in the context of the quickly accumulating archaeological record of sixth-century bc Rome, which suggests a dramatic increase in the number and scale of monumental projects in the expanding city.

The Quaternary Volsci Volcanic Field (VVF) represents one of the products of the west-directed subduction of the Adriatic slab that drove the development of the Apennine mountain belt in central Italy. Here, we present new results on the eruptive history and the diatreme processes of exemplar tectonically controlled carbonate-seated maar-diatreme volcanoes. The VVF is defined by phreatomagmatic surge deposits, rich in accidental carbonate lithics, and subordinate Strombolian scoria fall deposits and lava flows, locally sourced from some tens of monogenetic eruptive centers, mostly consisting of small volume (0.01-0.1 km3) tuff rings and scoria cones. In light of new 40Ar/39Ar geochronological data and compositional characterization of juvenile eruptive products, we refine the history of VVF activity and envisage the implications on the pre-eruptive magma system and the continental subduction processes involved. Leucite-bearing, high-K (HKS) magmas mostly fed the early phase of activity (∼761–539 ka); primitive, plagioclase-bearing (KS) magmas appeared during the climactic phase (∼424–349 ka), partially overlapping with HKS ones, and then prevailed during the late phase of activity (∼300–231 ka). As the volcanic centers cluster along high-angle faults, we investigate the relationships between faulting and explosive magma-water interaction, as well as the distribution pattern of the eruptive centers. New field data allowed to retrieve the fold-and-thrust belt structure associated with the eruptive centers. Analysis of componentry, grain-size, degrees of whiteness and roundness of carbonate lithic inclusions, along with their micropaleontological features, has allowed to establish volcano tectonic correlations. In our interpretation, the clustering of eruptive centers is controlled by tectonic features. Specifically, a first order control is tentatively related to crustal laceration and deep magma injection along a ENE-trending Quaternary lateral tear in the slab and to Mesozoic rift-related normal faults. A second-order control is provided by orogenic structures (mainly thrust and extensional faults). In particular, magma-water explosive interaction occurred at multiple levels (< 2.3 km depth), depending on the structural setting of the Albian-Cenomanian aquifer-bearing carbonates, which are intersected by high-angle faults. The progressive comminution, rounding and whitening of entrained carbonate lithics allow us to trace multistage diatreme processes. Finally, our findings bear implications on volcanic hazard assessment in the densely populated (> 0.4 million people) areas of the Volsci Range and adjoining Pontina Plain and Middle Latin Valley.

Here, we report on the Quaternary Volsci Volcanic Field (VVF, central Italy). In light of new 40Ar/39Ar geochronological data and compositional characterization of juvenile eruptive products, we refine the history of VVF activity, and outline the implications on the pre-eruptive magma system and the continental subduction processes involved. Different from the nearby volcanic districts of the Roman and Campanian Provinces, the VVF was characterized by small-volume (0.01–0.1 km3) eruptions from a network of monogenetic centers (mostly tuff rings and scoria cones, with subordinate lava occurrences), clustered along high-angle faults of lithospheric depth. Leucite-bearing, high-K (HKS) magmas (for which we report for the first time the phlogopite phenocryst compositions) mostly fed the early phase of activity (∼761–539 ka), then primitive, plagioclase-bearing (KS) magmas appeared during the climactic phase (∼424–349 ka), partially overlapping with HKS ones, and then prevailed during the late phase of activity (∼300–231 ka). The fast ascent of primitive magma batches is typical of a tectonically controlled volcanic field, where the very low magma flux is a passive byproduct of regional tectonic strain. We suggest that the dominant compressive stress field acting at depth was accompanied by an extensional regime in the upper crust, associated with the gravity spreading of the Apennine chain, allowing the fast ascent of magma from the mantle source with limited stationing in shallow reservoirs.

We present new experimental data on major and trace element partition coefficients (D) between clinopyroxene and a K-basaltic melt from Procida Island (Campi Flegrei Volcanic District, south Italy). Time-series experiments were conducted at 0.8 GPa and 1080–1250 °C aiming to investigate the role of the crystallization kinetics on trace elements partitioning behaviour at a pressure relevant for deep magmatic reservoirs. Results indicate that large ion lithophile elements (LILE) are incompatible (e.g., DSr ≤ 0.15), light rare elements (LREE; e.g., DLa ≤ 0.20) are always more incompatible than heavy rare elements (HREE), which in some cases result to be compatible with clinopyroxene (e.g., DDy = 1.40); high field strength elements (HFSE) are generally incompatible (DHFSE ≤ 0.8), while transition elements (TE) range from slightly incompatible (e.g., DV = 0.6) to highly compatible (e.g., DCr = 63). The calculated D values for LILEs, REEs, HFSEs, and TEs tend to decrease with the increase of temperature and to increase with increasing tetrahedrally-coordinated aluminium content, in agreement with the previous studies. Moreover, we observed the influence of the growth rate on the partition coefficients, with the highest DREE values calculated in the runs with the highest growth rate (~10−7 cm s−1), due to the less efficient rejection of incompatible elements during rapid crystal growth, that in this study is not linked to disequilibrium conditions, but to the presence of pre-existing nuclei. Additionally, the apparent increase in DREE values with time observed in some runs is not referable to a change in time but rather to the different degrees of polymerization, expressed as the ratios NBO/T of these melts, strictly related to a loss of Fe occurred during the experiments, and thus to a different melt viscosity. Finally, the application of the experimental clinopyroxene-melt partition coefficients highlights that the deepest step of the magmatic differentiation in the Campi Flegrei Volcanic District is represented by the fractionation of about 20–30% of a clinopyroxenitic mineral assemblage from a basaltic parental magma.

There is increasing recognition that both textural and compositional changes of clinopyroxene crystallizing from mafic alkaline magmas are the direct expression of complex dynamic processes extending over a broad range of spatial and temporal scales. Among others, supersaturation and relaxation phenomena play a key role in controlling the final crystal cargo of variably undercooled magmas erupted from active alkaline volcanoes. Following this line of reasoning, we have carried out isothermal-isobaric, decompression, and cooling rate experiments on a basalt interpreted as the parental magma of mafic alkaline eruptions at Mt. Etna volcano (Sicily, Italy). The main purpose is to reconstruct and quantify the textural changes (i.e., length of major and minor axes, surface area per unit volume, area fraction, and maximum growth rate) of clinopyroxene at variable pressures (30–300 MPa), temperatures (1050–1100 °C), volatile contents (0–5 wt% H2O and 0–0.2 wt% CO2), and equilibration times (0.25–72 h). Melt supersaturation, corresponding to a degree of undercooling variable from 14 to 125 °C, drives the formation of clinopyroxene crystals with different textures and sizes as a function of growth rate and relaxation time. By integrating experimental data and thermodynamic modeling, the transition between interface-controlled (euhedral morphologies) and diffusion-controlled (anhedral morphologies) growth regimes has been determined to occur at degrees of undercooling higher than 30 °C. The decrease of clinopyroxene growth rate with increasing the equilibration time is combined with the crystal size distribution (CSD) analysis of naturally undercooled clinopyroxene crystals erupted during 2011–2012 lava fountain episodes at Mt. Etna volcano. Results indicate that the crystallization of microlites and microphenocrysts is on the order of ~100–101 min (large undercooling, short equilibration time) and ~ 101–102 h (small undercooling, long equilibration time), respectively. This temporal information allows to better constrain the cooling-decompression paths of Etnean magmas rising and accelerating along a vertically extended, highly dynamic plumbing system. While clinopyroxene microlites develop during the fast ascent of magmas (~100–101 m s−1) within the uppermost part of the conduit or immediately before ejection from the vent, the onset of microphenocryst crystallization occurs at depth and continues within the plumbing system during the slow ascent of magmas (~10−2 m s−1) that migrate through interconnected storage regions.

Deep geothermal contributions can affect the thermal equilibrium of glacial systems, which can induce changes in their thermal state. These changes can be influenced by glacier dynamics and by the different ice flow velocities experienced over time, which dictate the static and dynamic interactions with glacial trough bedrock. To assess such interactions and to weight the effects of ice mass thermalisations on bedrock, 2D multistage numerical modelling was performed for Priestley Glacier (an outlet glacier) in the East Antarctic glacial system (northern Victoria Land), which has experienced extreme heat flux variations related to rifting and late Cenozoic volcanism. The thermal evolution of Priestley Glacier over the last ~500 ka was modelled considering the mutual contributions of local and deep thermal sources through a parametric variation in the geothermal heat flux. The ice mass velocity was indirectly taken into account by assuming an ice persistence time over the bedrock under timelled considering the mutual contributions of local and deep thermal sources through a parametric variation in the geothermal heat flux. The ice mass velocity was indirectly taken into account by assuming an ice persistence time over the bedrock under time-dependent modelling conditions. Ice thickness and geothermal heat fluxes, varying from 50 to 120 mW/m2, were conditions are strongly linked in determining the thermal state of the glacier base and consequently its impact on basal erosion. According to the adopted ice stationing levels, heat flux conditions not exceeding 70 mW/m2 are needed for preserving a dry-based glacier only assuming velocity conditions equal to or lower than those observed to date along Priestley Glacier. Assuming increased velocity conditions, the glacier sensitivity to heat fluxes decreases, and high to very high heat fluxes are not sufficient to cause glacier base transitions to wet states.

The Pietra dell’Oglio bridge is the only Roman infrastructure that crosses the Ofanto River between Mirabella Eclano (Aeclanum in Campania) and Venosa (Venusia in Basilicata), just near the border between Campania and Basilicata. The bridge was built on a substrate consisting of the stable middle Miocene Cerreta-Bosco di Pietra Palomba Sandstone (ACP) and where the Ofanto River valley is narrower. The current state of the bridge shows that 18 architectural and structural elements are original, 12 were restored, 1 was modified, 4 were reconstructed, and 4 were added in the last century. The original architectural and structural elements (ASEs) are built by the technique of opus quadratum and opus incertum using the pebbles of the Ofanto River and ashlars of phytoclastic travertine and ACP Sandstone cemented by very hard mortar. The opus incertum technique and its use for many bridges in Italy and France suggest that the Pietra dell’Oglio bridge was built between the II and I century BC at the service of a very important public road. The present research is allowed to identify the Pietra dell’Oglio bridge with the Pons Aufidi related to the old Appian Way layout between Mirabella Eclano and Venosa and contributes to improving the knowledge of Roman bridge engineering, particularly in Campania.

International audience; Glacial-interglacial variations in ice volume and sea level are essential components of the Pleistocene global climate evolution. Deciphering the timing of change of these key climate parameters with respect to the insolation forcing is central to understanding the processes controlling glacial terminations. Here we exploit the sensitivity of the Paleo Tiber River (central Italy) to sea-level forced changes in the base level and the frequent occurrence of datable tephra layers in its sedimentary successions to reconstruct the timing of the relative sea-level (RSL) change between 450 and 403 ka, i.e., across the glacial termination (T-V) that marks the transition between Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 12 and MIS 11. The analysis hinges on new stratigraphic data, tephra geochemical fingerprinting, and 40Ar/39Ar dating from a fluvial section that represents the inland counterpart of the near mouth, coastal aggradational successions of the San Paolo Formation (SPF). Tephra correlation indicates that the morpho-stratigraphic record of the inland section is as sensitive to the sea-level change as its coastal counterparts, which makes it ideal to complement previous RSL reconstructions from the Tiber River catchment basin, thereby providing a more detailed picture of the sea-level history across T-V. Combined sedimentological and morphological proxies of the composed inland-coastal SPF record document the occurrence of two phases of relatively rapid sea-level rise, here interpreted as meltwater pulse (MWP) events. The earlier MWP occurred between ∼450 and ∼445 ka and matches a relatively minor episode of the sea-level rise documented in an existing RSL record, while the younger MWP at ∼430 ka corresponds to the high amplitude sea-level rise that marks T-V. We find that both MWPs coincide with episodes of ice-rafted debris deposition in the North Atlantic (Heinrich-like events) and with attendant Southern Hemisphere warming, plausibly associated with the bipolar seesaw.

Through a systematic integrated approach, which combined lithostratigraphic, geochronological and geochemical analyses of tephra from near-source sections of the peri-Tyrrhenian volcanoes and mid to distal settings, here we provide an improved tephrochronological framework for the Marine Isotope Stage 11c interglacial (MIS 11c, ∼425–395 ka) in the Central Mediterranean area. Specifically, we present the complete geochemical dataset and new high-precision 40Ar/39Ar ages of the previously poorly characterized earliest pyroclastic products of the Vico volcano (420–400 ka), including the Plinian eruptions of Vico α and Vico β and the immediately post-dating lower magnitude explosive events. Furthermore, we also provide new geochronological and geochemical data for the distal tephra layers preserved in the aggradational succession of the Tiber delta (San Paolo Formation), Roman area, which records sea level rise relating to the MIS 12 (glacial) to MIS 11 (interglacial) transition. Five pyroclastic units were recognized in Vico volcanic area, four out of which, Vico α, Vico β, Vico βtop (a minor eruption immediately following Vico β and temporally very close to it) and Vico δ were directly dated at 414.8 ± 2.2 ka, 406.5 ± 2.4 ka, 406.4 ± 2.0 ka and 399.7 ± 3.2 ka respectively (2σ analytical uncertainties). These new data allow a critical reappraisal of the previously claimed identifications of Vico tephra from mid-distal to ultra-distal successions (i.e., Vico-Sabatini volcanic districts, Roman San Paolo Formation and Castel di Guido archaeological site, Sulmona Basin, Valdarno and Lake Ohrid), which were unavoidably biased by the poor and incomplete geochemical and geochronological reference datasets previously available. Such an improvement of the tephrochronological framework brings great benefits to any future investigations (e.g., paleoclimatology, archaeology, active tectonic, volcanology) in the dispersal areas of the studied eruptions at the key point in time that is MIS 11.

We present a geological-stratigraphical study aimed to provide chronologic constraints to the sea-level markers occurring at two coastal caves of central Italy (Grotta Guattari and Grotta dei Moscerini) and to the Neanderthal frequentation of these caves, in the light of recent archaeological and geomorphological-geochronological studies suggesting similar sea levels during MIS 5.5 and MIS 5.3, and only few m below the Present during MIS 5.1 in this region. Based on the review of previous literature data, combined with new stratigraphic observations at Grotta Guattari and re-analysis of archive material including unpublished field notes from Grotta dei Moscerini, we reconstruct a plausible sea-level history accounting for the lithological and paleoenvironmental features of their sedimentary fillings. In particular, we outline the abundant occurrence of well-rounded pumice clasts within the sedimentary deposits of Moscerini Cave, attesting for the proximity to the beach where this pumice was gathered by wave action. Through the petrographic and geochemical analysis of this pumice we evidence provenance from Phlegraean Fields and Ischia Island volcanic districts, framing their chronology in the time span 118–40 ka, consistent with literature ESR-U/Th dates providing ages ranging 101 ± 5–74 ± 7 ka for the sedimentary filling of both Moscerini and Guattari caves.

This multi-disciplinary work provides an updated assessment of possible future eruptive scenarios for the city of Rome. Seven new 40Ar/39Ar ages from selected products of the Monti Sabatini and Vulsini volcanic districts, along with a compilation of all the literature ages on the Colli Albani and Vico products, are used to reconstruct and compare the eruptive histories of the Monti Sabatini and Colli Albani over the last 900 ka, in order to define their present state of activity. Petrographic analyses of the dated units characterize the crystal cargo, and Advanced-InSAR analysis highlights active deformation in the MS. We also review the historical and instrumental seismicity affecting this region. Based on the chronology of the most recent phases and the time elapsed between the last eruptions, we conclude that the waning/extinguishment of eruptive activity shifted progressively from NW to SE, from northern Latium toward the Neapolitan area, crossing the city of Rome. Although Monti Sabatini is unaffected by the unrest indicators presently occurring at the Colli Albani, it should be regarded as a dormant volcanic district, as the time of 70 kyr elapsed since the last eruption is of the same order of the longest dormancies occurred in the past.

We discuss the quantum phase transitions (QPT) in N-spin chains from the point of view of collective observables. We show that the measurement space representation is a convenient tool for the analysis of phase transitions, allowing the determination of an appropriate set of macroscopic order parameters (for a given Hamiltonian). Quantum correlations in the vicinity of the critical points are analyzed both in the ground states and low temperature thermal states.

Isotopic disequilibrium is increasingly recognized as a common feature of magmatic systems, but the details of the mechanism(s) underpinning the development of isotopic disequilibrium during partial melting processes are not fully understood. Partial melting of mica-rich lithologies may be predicted to generate melts enriched in radiogenic Sr compared to the bulk protolith compositions due to the typically high Rb/Sr ratio coupled with low melting temperature of mica in crustal rocks. Here we report a puzzling case study where the Sr-isotope composition of the melt fraction (leucosome) of partially molten metapelites (migmatites) is less radiogenic than the restitic component (melanosome). The examined migmatites fringe (50m wide zone) a low-pressure (≤200 MPa), high-temperature (1050°C) quartz-dioritic intrusion, which was emplaced in the Gennargentu Igneous Complex (Sardinia, Italy) at 306626Ma (bulk-rock Rb/Sr dating). The migmatites derive from anatexis of the muscovite-rich metapelitic wall-rocks. They include a quartzo-feldspathic leucosome and a melanosome containing cordierite, K-feldspar, plagioclase, biotite, Fe-Ti oxide minerals and both corundum and hercynite. The leucosome has a less radiogenic Sr and more radiogenic Nd isotope composition than the melanosome (87Sr/86Sr (306 Ma) = 0·71068 and 0·71536; εNd(306Ma) = -6·4 and -9·2, respectively), with bulk migmatite samples having intermediate compositions. The significantly lower content of mica in the migmatites compared to the protolith indicates that muscovite and, to a lesser extent, biotite largely contributed to melt formation. However, the leucosome volume (50%) estimated through mass balance calculations is considerably higher than the amount of melt (≤10 vol. %) generally produced by mica-dehydration melting in the crust, suggesting that partial melting was enhanced by an external hydrous fluid. The O-isotope composition of the migmatites is lower than the typical metapelite values (>10‰) but overlaps with the δ18O range of the quartz-diorites (8·8-9·9‰), suggesting that such a hydrous fluid was released from the quartz-dioritic intrusion. We put forward a model whereby the anatexis temperature conditions (T < 800°C) favored the preservation of isotopic disequilibrium of micas and plagioclase in the protolith. In this context, the leucosome formed by the preferential melting of less radiogenic plagioclase rather than more radiogenic micas. The melt was then efficiently separated from the melanosome containing restitic biotite and 'peritectic K-feldspar and magnetite' derived from mica breakdown. During the anatectic process the quartz-diorite provided not only the heat budget, but also the fluid amount responsible for (i) the hydration of the pelitic country rock, (ii) the increase of melt fraction, and (iii) the higher mobility of anatectic magma.

Dissolution of clinopyroxene (cpx) in a K-basaltic melt from the Campi Flegrei Volcanic District (Italy) has been investigated through dissolution and dissolution-crystallization experiments at pressure of 0.8 GPa, superliquidus temperature of 1350 °C, and dwell times between 0.5 and 1 h. The obtained dissolution rates range from 7.9·10−6 cm s−1 to 6.1·10−6 cm s−1 as a function of dwell time. In the dissolution-crystallization experiment (1300 °C; 0.8 GPa; 2 h), the formation of overgrowth rims accompanied by new cpx crystals suggests that the injection of recharge magmas in basaltic reservoir may lead to inverse or oscillatory zonation. The interaction between cpx and K-basaltic melt at ~1570 °C was studied by in situ radiography using synchrotron radiation combined with the Paris-Edinburgh press. This resulted in cpx resorption to occur depending on the temperature conditions with respect to the liquidus temperature of the cpx (TcpxL). The calculated cpx dissolution rates are ~5·10−3 cm s−1 at T ≤ TcpxL and ~ 3·10−2 cm s−1 at T ≥ TcpxL. The role of crystal dissolution in the estimation of magma residence times has been also tested for a natural magmatic system by interpolating the dissolution rates (~10−5–10−6 cm s−1) with the textural data of cpx phenocrysts from the Agnano-Monte Spina pyroclastic deposit at Campi Flegrei caldera (Campanian region, Italy). Results from calculations indicate that the time required for partial or complete resorption of phenocrysts varies from ~0.5 to ~40 h, and that the effect of crystal dissolution may be relevant to estimate magma residence times whether significant dissolution occurs during magma mixing processes.

Aiming to improve the current knowledge about amphibole growth kinetics at deep crustal levels, new amphibole growth rate data are provided. Our findings, indeed, may be useful to correctly interpret the textural features of amphibole-bearing mafic cumulates and rocks, and for a better constraining of the timescales of magmatic processes at upper mantle-lower crustal depths. Experiments were performed to determine the amphibole growth rates in a primitive alkaline basalt from Procida island (Campi Flegrei Volcanic District, southern Italy) at the following conditions: temperature of 1030 and 1080 °C, pressure of 0.8 GPa, water content in the range 3.3-4.2 wt%, and variable dwell time from 0.25 to 9 h. Amphibole growth rates range from 1.5·10-7 to 2.9·10-8 cm·s-1 with increasing the duration of the experiments. It is observed that, keeping a constant dwell time, an increase of the experimental temperature or of the water content results in comparable growth rate increase. Coexisting synthetic amphibole and clinopyroxene show a faster growth rates in favour of amphibole regardless of the dwell time, since the chemical and structural similarities of these minerals cause kinetic competition. Moreover, the chemical composition of amphibole is influenced mainly by the experimental time; in detail, in the shortest (≤3 h) and low temperature runs edenite is the prevailing composition whereas the magnesiohastingsitic term becomes dominant at higher temperature and longer run duration. Based on the interpretation of the Fe-Mg exchange coefficient values between amphibole and coexisting liquid, the magnesiohastingsitic amphibole is considered to be the stable term at the investigated run conditions. Finally, the resulting growth rates have been applied to constrain the crystallization time of natural amphiboles and clinopyroxenes from the Oligo-Miocene cumulates of north-western Sardinia (i.e., Capo Marargiu Volcanic District, Italy), yielding crystallization times in the range 1.46-3.12 yr.

International audience; Excavated in 1949, Grotta dei Moscerini, dated MIS 5 to early MIS 4, is one of two Italian Neandertal sites with a large assemblage of retouched shells (n = 171) from 21 layers. The other occurrence is from the broadly contemporaneous layer L of Grotta del Cavallo in southern Italy (n = 126). Eight other Mousterian sites in Italy and one in Greece also have shell tools but in a very small number. The shell tools are made on valves of the smooth clam Callista chione. The general idea that the valves of Callista chione were collected by Neandertals on the beach after the death of the mollusk is incomplete. At Moscerini 23.9% of the specimens were gathered directly from the sea floor as live animals by skin diving Neandertals. Archaeological data from sites in Italy, France and Spain confirm that shell fishing and fresh water fishing was a common activity of Neandertals, as indicated by anatomical studies recently published by E. Trinkaus. Lithic analysis provides data to show the relation between stone tools and shell tools. Several layers contain pumices derived from volcanic eruptions in the Ischia Island or the Campi Flegrei (prior to the Campanian Ignimbrite mega-eruption). Their rounded edges indicate that they were transported by sea currents to the beach at the base of the Moscerini sequence. Their presence in the occupation layers above the beach is discussed. The most plausible hypothesis is that they were collected by Neandertals. Incontrovertible evidence that Neandertals collected pumices is provided by a cave in Liguria. Use of pumices as abraders is well documented in the Upper Paleolithic. We prove that the exploitation of submerged aquatic resources and the collection of pumices common in the Upper Paleolithic were part of Neandertal behavior well before the arrival of modern humans in Western Europe.

We present a multidisciplinary study of a fossiliferous site located in the Vulsini Volcanic District, on the western side of the Tiber River Valley north of Rome, highlighting the peculiar geologic factors that contributed to the origin and preservation of an outstanding archaeological record testifying of the early human frequentation in this region. Mighty explosive eruptions since at least 500 ka affected the investigated area eventually culminating in the formation of the huge Bolsena caldera. Tectonic deformation accompanying volcanic activity caused large fault displacements, shaping the ground surface and contributing to route the path, and possibly to trigger, the catastrophic emplacement of volcaniclastic flows. A sedimentary trap originated by fault scarp cutting through a streambed was likely the cause for the large accumulation of bones and stone artifacts ripped up and carried by a volcaniclastic flow at 322 ka. The analysis of the fossil assemblage reveals both gnawing traces by carnivores and cut-marks from the percussion tools employed by humans to butch the carcasses. However, the occurrence of retouched and unretouched blanks within the lithic assemblage also testifies for provenance from a wider area of human activity, which included hunting and scavenging, probably at a nearby butchering site.

The purpose of this review study is to reappraise in a more comprehensive form the thermodynamic principles behind the partitioning of trace elements between clinopyroxene and melt. The original corollary is that the partitioning energetics controlling the crystal-melt exchange are described by two distinct but complementary contributions: ΔGpartitioning = ΔGstrain + ΔGelectrostatic. ΔGstrain is the excess of strain energy quantifying the elastic response of the crystallographic site to insertion of trace cations with radius different from that of the major cation at the site. ΔGelectrostatic is the excess of electrostatic energy requiring that an electrostatic energy penalty is paid when a trace cation entering the lattice site without strain has charge different from that of the resident cation. Lattice strain and electrostatic parameters for different isovalent groups of cations hosting the same lattice site from literature have been discussed in comparison with new partitioning data measured between Tschermak-rich clinopyroxenes and a primitive phonotephritic melt assimilating variable amounts of carbonate material. Through such a comparatively approach, we illustrate that the type and number of trace cation substitutions are controlled by both charge-balanced and -imbalanced configurations taking place in the structural sites of Tschermak-rich clinopyroxenes. A virtue of this complementary relationship is that the control of melt composition on the partitioning of highly charged cations is almost entirely embodied in the crystal chemistry and structure, as long as these crystallochemical aspects are the direct expression of both ΔGstrain and ΔGelectrostatic. A size mismatch caused by cation substitution is accommodated by elastic strain in the surrounding lattice of clinopyroxene, whereas the charge mismatch is enabled via increasing amounts of charge-balancing Tschermak components, as well as the electrostatic work done on transferring the trace cations from melt to crystallographic sites, and vice versa. The influence of the melt chemistry on highly-charged (3+ and 4+) cation partitioning is greatly subordinate to the lattice strain and electrostatic energies of substitutions, in agreement with the thermodynamic premise that both these energetic quantities represent simple-activity composition models for the crystal phase. The various charge-balanced and -imbalanced configurations change principally with aluminium in tetrahedral coordination and the clinopyroxene volume change produced by heterovalent cation substitutions. In contrast, for low-charged (1+ and 2+) cations, the role of melt chemistry cannot be properly deconvoluted from the structural changes of the crystal lattice. The incorporation of these cations into the clinopyroxene lattice depends on the number of structural sites critically important to accommodating network-modifying cations in the melt structure, implying that the partitioning energetics of monovalent and divalent cations are strictly controlled by both crystal and melt properties. We conclude that the competition between charge-balanced and charge-imbalanced substitutions may selectively change the ability of trace elements to be compatible or incompatible in the clinopyroxene structure, with important ramifications for the modeling of natural igneous processes in crustal magma reservoirs which differentiate under closed- and open-system conditions.

Clinopyroxene growth rates were experimentally determined in a K-basaltic rock from Campi Flegrei Volcanic District (south Italy). The primary objective was to provide constraints on the clinopyroxene crystallization kinetics at high pressure: we carried out a series of experiments at 0.8 GPa, 1030–1250 °C, 1 ≤ H2O ≤ 4 wt.%, with durations of 0.25, 3, 6 and 9 h. Overall, growth rate reaches a maximum value in the shortest experiments (~ 3·10−7 cm·s−1), decreasing to ~ 1·10−8 cm·s−1 in the longest duration runs. Temperature and water content do not seem to significantly affect the growth rate. Moreover, partition coefficients based on the crystal-liquid exchange show that mineral chemistry progressively approaches equilibrium with increasing run duration. Furthermore, to estimate the magma recharge of the deep reservoirs, we combined the determined growth rates with data from thermobarometry and from crystal size distribution analyses of clinopyroxenes in the most primitive scoria clasts of the Campi Flegrei Volcanic District (CFVD). We obtained a minimum residence time of ~ 5 months for the larger clinopyroxene population, and an ascent velocity of ~ 0.5·10−4 m·s−1 for the CFVD K-basaltic magma. The smaller clinopyroxene phenocrysts and microlite populations, however, suggest that the late stage of Procida magma crystallization took place in disequilibrium conditions.

Here we present the first tephrostratigraphic, palaeomagnetic, and multiproxy data from a new ∼98 m-deep sediment core retrieved from the Fucino Basin, central Italy, spanning the last ∼430 kyr. Palaeoenvironmental proxy data (Ca-XRF, gamma ray and magnetic susceptibility) show a cyclical variability related to interglacial-glacial cycles since the Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 12-MIS 11 transition. More than 130 tephra layers are visible to the naked eye, 11 of which were analysed (glass-WDS) and successfully correlated to known eruptions and/or other equivalent tephra. In addition to tephra already recognised in the previously investigated cores spanning the last 190 kyr, we identified for the first time tephra from the eruptions of: Tufo Giallo di Sacrofano, Sabatini (288.0 ± 2.0 ka); Villa Senni, Colli Albani (367.5 ± 1.6 ka); Pozzolane Nere and its precursor, Colli Albani (405.0 ± 2.0 ka, and 407.1 ± 4.2 ka, respectively) and Castel Broco, Vulsini (419–490 ka). The latter occurs at the bottom of the core and has been 40Ar/39Ar dated at 424.3 ± 3.2 ka, thus providing a robust chronological constrain for both the eruption itself and the base of the investigated succession. Direct 40Ar/39Ar dating and tephra geochemical fingerprinting provide a preliminary radioisotopic-based chronological framework for the MIS 11-MIS 7 interval, which represent a foundation for the forthcoming multiproxy studies and for investigating the remaining ∼110 tephra layers that are recorded within this interval. Such future developments will contribute towards an improved MIS 11-MIS 7 Mediterranean tephrostratigraphy, which is still poorly explored and exploited.

Leucititic rocks, K-foiditic in composition are volumetrically important in the Colli Albani (also known as Alban Hills) volcanic district (Central Italy) especially during the most explosive phases of activity (>200 km3). The Colli Albani tephra in distal (>500 km) deposits indicates that K-foiditic magma chambers fed large explosive eruptions (i.e., tens of km3 of pyroclastic rocks). Major oxides, trace elements and Raman spectra were measured on the glasses and minerals occurring in the K-foiditic scoria clasts of the ~530 kyr-old Tufo del Palatino, erupted in the Colli Albani volcanic district. The Colli Albani pre-eruptive magmatic system is characterized by the aH2O < 1 and high CO2 activity in the melt, as testified by the CO3 in the clinopyroxene melt inclusions, by the early crystallization of CO3-bearing apatite and by the high CO2 activity in the free volatile phase that led to crystallization of calcium carbonate in the scoria clast vesicles. The K-foiditic magmas plot on the Cpx + Lc + melt divariant surface of the Ol-Cpx-Lc-Mel-H2O-CO2, P ≥ 0.2 GPa and T ≤ 1100 °C. The assimilation of cold carbonate by hot magmas is an important open-system process allowing the establishment of aH20 < 1 condition in the volatile-rich, Colli Albani magma chambers where the stability fields of the olivine and phlogopite are reduced in favor of clinopyroxene and leucite. Trace element modelling indicates large amount of carbonate assimilation (~12.4 wt%) involved in the differentiation process that origins the K-foiditic magmas starting from a K-rich, phonotephritic parental magma. The large amount of assimilate carbonate is consistent with the peculiar distribution of the latent heat across the crystallization interval of the phonotephritic parental magma. The isenthalpic assimilation process is very efficient in the phonotephritic magma because the crystallization of clinopyroxene and leucite in equilibrium with a K-foiditic melt proceeds over a relatively large temperature interval (>200 °C) and the K-foiditic melt shows low viscosity (104Pa·s at 1000 °C). Actually, the low melt viscosity, that increases the growth rate, and the large temperature interval of crystallization are intrinsic factors that increase the release of the latent heat of crystallization from the phonotephritic parental magma. Extrinsic factors enhancing the assimilation process efficiency are the thickness (>4 km) and the depth (down to 5–7 km) of the carbonate substrate in the Colli Albani volcanic district.

We prove that all macroscopic properties of the N-qubit cluster state are asymptotically invariant under local transformations in the limit N ≫ 1, and can be described by a distribution function similar to that of the completely mixed state.

The alkaline basaltic magmas at Mt. Overlord (northern Victoria Land, Antarctica) entrained abundant ultramafic xenoliths (wehrlites, clinopyroxenites and hornblendites). Textures, bulk rock compositions, mineral chemistry and thermobarometric calculations indicate that the xenoliths represent cumulates that crystallised at the mantle–crust boundary. In particular, the major and trace element compositions of the bulk rocks and minerals indicate that the Mt. Overlord cumulates were formed through processes of crystal fractionation that affected hydrous basanitic magmas. Some of the xenoliths have textural features that suggest a lengthy (> 13 Myr) post-emplacement history at relatively low temperatures (1050–1100 °C) and high pressures (0.8 to 1.4 GPa) and that their primary parental melts were therefore related to the earliest phases of Cenozoic magmatism. These processes produced a “wet and hot deep zone” that had a strong influence on the thermochemical evolution of the lower crust beneath Mt. Overlord.

Volcanic processes occur in a wide range of temporal and spatial scales. However, a key step of magma ascent is recognizable in the dynamics of gas and magma in the shallow plumbing system, where volatiles play a fundamental role in controlling the eruptive style. With the aim of investigating shallow degassing processes, an experimental setup was deployed at Mt. Yasur, an active volcano located in Tanna Island (Vanuatu arc), from 9th to 12th July 2011. The setup comprised high-speed and thermal cameras, as well as a microphone, capable of recording both in the infrasonic and audible range. The analysis of acoustic signals, validated by observing images from the high-speed and thermal cameras, has enabled characterizing the explosive activity during the investigated period. Two types of explosions, distinct for spectral features and waveforms, were observed: (i) minor events, corresponding to small overpressurized bursts, occurring almost continuously; (ii) major events, characterizing the Strombolian activity at Mt. Yasur. By investigating variation in the occurrence rate of the minor events, we found that, on a short timescale, the dynamics responsible for the two types of explosions are decoupled. These results, together with previous literature data, bring additional evidence of the existence of distinct sources of degassing. Finally, major events can be distinguished as emergent events, i.e. long-lasting signals, corresponding to ash-rich explosions, and impulsive events, featuring shorter duration and larger amplitude.

We present new 40Ar/39Ar data which allow us to refine the recurrence time for the most recent eruptive activity occurred at Colli Albani Volcanic District (CAVD) and constrain its geographic area. Time elapsed since the last eruption (36 kyr) overruns the recurrence time (31 kyr) in the last 100 kyr. New interferometric synthetic aperture radar data, covering the years 1993–2010, reveal ongoing inflation with maximum uplift rates (>2 mm/yr) in the area hosting the most recent (

The Sabatini Volcanic District (SVD), active between 0.8 and 0.07 Ma, is a volcanic field in the Roman province (Central Italy) located along the Tyrrhenian margin of the Italian peninsula. In this volcanic region, high-K magmas originated from a metasomatised phlogopite-bearing peridotite mantle recording subduction-related fluids and/or melting processes. Here, we investigate magma evolution during the six main eruptive phases of the SVD by means of chemical and isotopic (Sr and Nd) analyses. Specifically, we analyzed clinopyroxene crystals from juvenile pumice and scoria clasts and lavas, from 40 major SVD eruptive units chronologically well constrained by 40Ar/39Ar dating. 87Sr/86Sr and 144Nd/143Nd ratios in SVD clinopyroxene range 0.7095–0.7115 and 0.51210-0.51214, respectively. The mean Sr and Nd isotope compositions of each eruptive phases show a gradual, long-term decrease over the entire SVD eruptive history. However, when considering the distinct temporal windows of the individual eruptive phases, a significant variability of the Sr-Nd isotope ratios emerges, thus highlighting a more complex, time-dependent geochemical trend for the erupted magmas, with respect to a previously described trend at the nearby Colli Albani Volcanic District (0.6–0.04 Ma). Geochemical features of clinopyroxene in lavas and juvenile pyroclasts suggest that magma differentiation occurred in an open system due to assimilation of siliciclastic sedimentary rocks. Moreover, a critical review of the available geochemical data, in light of 40Ar/39Ar ages, allows the recognition of the SVD as the source of widespread tephra markers recorded in the central Mediterranean area by previous works.

We present a review of the geomorphology of the Tyrrhenian Sea coast of central Italy integrated by a novel structural-geomorphological study coupled with statistical analysis of topographic culminations and comparison with a Digital Elevation Model, aimed at reconstructing a suite of paleo-surfaces corresponding to remnant portions of marine terraces. We performed geochronological, sedimentological, micromorphological and mineralogical investigations on the deposits forming the different paleo-surfaces between Civitavecchia and Anzio towns, in order to provide chronostratigraphical, paleogeographical and paleoenvironmental constraints. Using the newly achieved dataset we correlate these paleo-surfaces with the coastal terraces formed during past sea-level highstands, as recognized by previous studies, and we refine their correlation with the Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) timescale. In particular, we have extended our geomorphological analyses landward in the area between the Tiber River mouth and Anzio, in order to include the oldest paleo-surface developed above the deposits of the last large explosive eruption at 365 ± 4 ka in the Colli Albani Volcanic District. Results of this study allow us to recognize a set of higher paleo-surfaces at elevation ranging 108 thought 71 m a.s.l., which we interpret as one tectonically displaced, widespread coastal terrace originated during the MIS 9.1 highstand. We correlate the previously identified paleo-surfaces of 66–62 m a.s.l. and 56–52 m a.s.l. with the equivalent coastal terraces developed during the sea-level highstands of sub-stages 7.5 and 7.3/7.1. Moreover, based on data from literature on relative elevation of maximum sea level during the highstands of MIS 11 through MIS 5.1, we assess the regional uplift and the concurrent tectonic displacements that have occurred since 900 ka in this area.

The rhinoceros remains collected during the past century in the lower levels XII (= K) and XI (= I) of the famous Pleistocene locality of Grotta Romanelli (Lecce, southern Italy) are described and compared in detail for the first time. Some remains are referred to Stephanorhinus sp. and others are assigned here to the late early-middle Pleistocene European species Stephanorhinus hundsheimensis based on several morphological characters. Based on its olivine-bearing texture, the volcanoclastic ash sampled from some rhinoceros bones can be referred to the first phase of the Monte Vulture activity (around 630 ka). The results of the stable isotope analyses suggest that the climate in the lowest levels of Grotta Romanelli could have been more arid than it was at the time of the upper level IX, which is generally referred to the late Pleistocene. In addition, both recent day δ18Oppt values and MAT are very similar to values calculated for levels X and XII, suggesting that the climate at those times may have been close to the Present one, whereas climate in level IX may have been somewhat cooler. The presence of Stephanorhinus hundsheimensis suggests a middle Pleistocene age for the lower levels of Grotta Romanelli, in agreement with the results obtained from the volcanoclastic material.
