Abstract

ALMA has been operating since 2011, but has not yet been populated with the full suite of intended frequency bands. In particular, ALMA Band 2 (67-90 GHz) is the final band in the original ALMA band definition to be approved for production. We aim to produce a wideband, tuneable, sideband-separating receiver with 28 GHz of instantaneous bandwidth per polarisation operating in the sky frequency range 67-116 GHz. Our design anticipates new ALMA requirements following the recommendations in the 2030 ALMA Development Roadmap. The cryogenic cartridge is designed to be compatible with the ALMA Band 2 cartridge slot, where the coldest components -- the feedhorns, orthomode transducers, and cryogenic low noise amplifiers -- operate at a temperature of 15 K. We use multiple simulation methods and tools to optimise our designs for both the passive optics and the active components. The cryogenic cartridge interfaces with a room temperature cartridge hosting the local oscillator (LO) and the downconverter module. This warm cartridge is largely based on GaAs semiconductor technology and is optimised to match the cryogenic receiver bandwidth with the required instantaneous LO tuning range. Our collaboration has designed, fabricated, and tested multiple technical solutions for each of the components, producing a state-of-the-art receiver covering the full ALMA Band 2 & 3 atmospheric window. The receiver is suitable for deployment on ALMA in the coming years, and is capable of dual-polarisation, sideband-separating observations in intermediate frequency bands spanning 4-18 GHz, for a total of 28 GHz on-sky bandwidth per polarisation channel. We conclude that the 67-116 GHz wideband implementation for ALMA Band 2 is now feasible, and this receiver is a compelling instrumental upgrade that will enhance observational capabilities and scientific reach., Comment: 23 pages, accepted for publication in A&A on 20 Dec 2019. Abstract

This thesis explores the hybrid and inorganic lead halide perovskite compounds methylammonium lead iodide (MAPI) and caesium lead iodide-bromide (CsPbI2Br) with regard to their synthesis, stability and use in thin film solar photovoltaic devices. MAPI thin films were prepared using two different approaches: the one-step and the two-step solution processes to determine which gives better films, in terms of physical-chemical properties, environmental stability and device performance. The best device efficiency obtained by devices prepared with MAPI (glass/ITO/TiO2/MAPI/spiroOMeTAD/Au) was of 11.8% PCE, however the device stability toward environmental conditions was poor, showing degradation effects in environments containing UV light combined with oxygen. In order to circumvent the instability issue, the fully inorganic CsPbI2Br compound was studied for direct comparison, as an alternative, more stable perovskite compound. Once the synthesis of CsPbI2Br thin films was optimised, devices were fabricated (glass/ITO/TiO2/CsPbI2Br/spiro-OMeTAD/Au) and measured, giving a champion device PCE of 9.1%. However, while the CsPbI2Br devices were found to present higher environmental stability compared to MAPI devices, they showed high susceptibility towards humid conditions. Unlike MAPI, however, the degradation of CsPbI2Br was caused by phase instability, rather than chemical degradation, which was demonstrated to be reversible. Most devices in this work were fabricated using a superstrate n-i-p device architecture commonly used for perovskite solar cells. In addition, a new device structure was created, with the aim of forming a heterojunction between MAPI and silicon. First the device structure was studied (contact/Si/MAPI/transporting material/contact) using both n- and p-doped silicon wafers, to determining the ideal Ohmic contacts, the nature of MAPI deposited onto silicon and by understanding the electrical behaviours of each interface. Solar cells of this type produced efficiencies up to 2.1% PCE. It was demonstrated that these Si/MAPI heterojunction devices form a single-sided junction in the silicon. Recommendations for improvement are given.

Abstract

In the period 2012 June - 2013 October, the Sardinia Radio Telescope (SRT) went through the technical commissioning phase. The characterization involved three first-light receivers, ranging in frequency between 300MHz and 26GHz, connected to a Total Power back-end. It also tested and employed the telescope active surface installed in the main reflector of the antenna. The instrument status and performance proved to be in good agreement with the expectations in terms of surface panels alignment (at present 300 um rms to be improved with microwave holography), gain (~0.6 K/Jy in the given frequency range), pointing accuracy (5 arcsec at 22 GHz) and overall single-dish operational capabilities. Unresolved issues include the commissioning of the receiver centered at 350 MHz, which was compromised by several radio frequency interferences, and a lower-than-expected aperture efficiency for the 22-GHz receiver when pointing at low elevations. Nevertheless, the SRT, at present completing its Astronomical Validation phase, is positively approaching its opening to the scientific community., Comment: 20 pages

Abstract

38th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition; 490-495, Advanced LED solar simulators feature flexible and enduring light sources for various applications. The need for current matching of the series connected perovskite and silicon cells presents optimization challenges and tradeoffs for maximum power output. A flexible sun simulator combined with suitable equipment to measure cell characteristics is necessary in order to allow cell-preconditioning (light soaking) and continuous tracking of the maximum power point (MPP) during the characterization process. In this paper, we will demonstrate a routine to presoak and track the tandem cell current as well as a fast method to detect the current matching based on a spectrally sensitive characterization method. Besides the individual setting of single LED channels, the creation of nearly any user definded spectra for e.g. different solar altitudes or any spectral albedo is shown and hence offers the research of multiple junction cells - especially perovskite technology - an uncomplicated and fast characterization tool. A 1cm² bipolar perovskite/silicon tandem solar cell fabricated at Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin (HZB) was used for detailed investigations. A 4-step measurement cycle was recorded, starting with 15 min of light soaking, followed by an MPP tracking procedure to bring the cell to a stable working state for subsequent measurements and a 1-min forward and finally a 1-min reverse I-V curve. Hysteresis effects as well as time-dependent changes in the electrical behavior (degradation) of the cell were observed. Finally, spectrometric characterization was performed by varying certain wavelength ranges in the UV/VIS and NIR regions to determine the current matching point. Either due to the changing electrical properties of the cells over time or due to the layer structure not being spectrally matched to AM1.5g, no current matching point could be determined.

Abstract

Background: The concomitant presence of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) and medullary TC (MTC) is rare. In this multicentric study, we documented the epidemiological characteristics, disease conditions and clinical outcome of patients with simultaneous MTC/PTC. Methods: We collected data of patients with concomitant MTC/PTC at 14 Italian referral centers. Results: In total, 183 patients were enrolled. Diagnosis was mostly based on cytological examination (n = 58, 32%). At diagnosis, in the majority of cases, both PTC (n = 142, 78%) and MTC (n = 100, 54%) were at stage I. However, more cases of stage II–IV were reported with MTC (stage IV: n = 27, 15%) compared with PTC (n = 9, 5%). Information on survival was available for 165 patients: 109 patients (66%) were disease-free for both PTC and MTC at the last follow-up. Six patients died from MTC. Median time to progression was 123 months (95% confidence interval (CI): 89.3–156.7 months). Overall, 45% of patients were disease-free after &gt, 10 years from diagnosis (125 months), this figure was 72.5% for PTC and 51.1% for MTC. Conclusions: When MTC and PTC are concurrent, the priority should be given to the management of MTC since this entity appears associated with the most severe impact on prognosis.
