Abstract: The past few decades have seen major developments in the design and operation of cryogenic particle detectors. This technology offers an extremely good energy resolution - comparable to semiconductor detectors - and a wide choice of target materials, making low temperature calorimetric detectors ideal for a variety of particle physics applications. Rare event searches have continued to require ever greater exposures, which has driven them to ever larger cryogenic detectors, with the CUORE experiment being the first to reach a tonne-scale, mK-cooled, experimental mass. CUORE, designed to search for neutrinoless double beta decay, has been operational since 2017 at a temperature of about 10 mK. This result has been attained by the use of an unprecedentedly large cryogenic infrastructure called the CUORE cryostat: conceived, designed and commissioned for this purpose. In this article the main characteristics and features of the cryogenic facility developed for the CUORE experiment are highlighted. A brief introduction of the evolution of the field and of the past cryogenic facilities are given. The motivation behind the design and development of the CUORE cryogenic facility is detailed as are the steps taken toward realization, commissioning, and operation of the CUORE cryostat. The major challenges overcome by the collaboration and the solutions implemented throughout the building of the cryogenic facility will be discussed along with the potential improvements for future facilities. The success of CUORE has opened the door to a new generation of large-scale cryogenic facilities in numerous fields of science. Broader implications of the incredible feat achieved by the CUORE collaboration on the future cryogenic facilities in various fields ranging from neutrino and dark matter experiments to quantum computing will be examined., Comment: 45 pages, 14 figures

Abstract: The CUORE experiment, a ton-scale cryogenic bolometer array, recently began operation at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy. The array represents a significant advancement in this technology, and in this work we apply it for the first time to a high-sensitivity search for a lepton-number-violating process: ^{130}Te neutrinoless double-beta decay. Examining a total TeO_{2} exposure of 86.3 kg yr, characterized by an effective energy resolution of (7.7±0.5) keV FWHM and a background in the region of interest of (0.014±0.002) counts/(keV kg yr), we find no evidence for neutrinoless double-beta decay. Including systematic uncertainties, we place a lower limit on the decay half-life of T_{1/2}^{0ν}(^{130}Te)>1.3×10^{25} yr (90% C.L.); the median statistical sensitivity of this search is 7.0×10^{24} yr. Combining this result with those of two earlier experiments, Cuoricino and CUORE-0, we find T_{1/2}^{0ν}(^{130}Te)>1.5×10^{25} yr (90% C.L.), which is the most stringent limit to date on this decay. Interpreting this result as a limit on the effective Majorana neutrino mass, we find m_{ββ}

Abstract: Neutrinoless double-beta ($0\nu\beta\beta$) decay is a hypothesized lepton-number-violating process that offers the only known means of asserting the possible Majorana nature of neutrino mass. The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is an upcoming experiment designed to search for $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay of $^{130}$Te using an array of 988 TeO$_2$ crystal bolometers operated at 10 mK. The detector will contain 206 kg of $^{130}$Te and have an average energy resolution of 5 keV; the projected $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay half-life sensitivity after five years of live time is $1.6\times 10^{26}$ y at $1\sigma$ ($9.5\times10^{25}$ y at the 90% confidence level), which corresponds to an upper limit on the effective Majorana mass in the range 40--100 meV (50--130 meV). Abstract: A new approach to β-delayed neutron spectroscopy has been demonstrated that circumvents the many limitations associated with neutron detection by instead inferring the decay branching ratios and energy spectra of the emitted neutrons by studying the nuclear recoil. Using the Beta-decay Paul Trap, fission-product ions were trapped and confined to within a 1 -mm 3 volume under vacuum using only electric fields. Results from recent measurements of 137 I + and plans for development of a dedicated ion trap for future experiments using the intense fission fragment beams from the Californium Rare Isotope Breeder Upgrade (CARIBU) facility at Argonne National Laboratory are summarized. The improved nuclear data that can be collected is needed in many fields of basic and applied science such as nuclear energy, nuclear astrophysics, and stockpile stewardship.

Abstract: CUORE is a 741kg array of TeO 2 bolometers for the search of neutrinoless double beta decay of 130 Te. The detectoris being constructed at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, Italy, where it will start taking data in 2015. If thetarget background of 0.01counts/(keVkgy) will be reached, in ﬁve years of data taking CUORE will have a 1˙halflife sensitivity of 10 26 y. CUORE-0 is a smaller experiment constructed to test and demonstrate the performancesexpected for CUORE. The detector is a single tower of 52 CUORE-like bolometers that started taking data in spring2013. Abstract: The β - decay Paul trap is a linear radiofrequency-quadrupole ion trap that has been developed for precision β - decay studies. The design of the trap electrodes allows a variety of radiation detectors to surround the cloud of trapped ions. The momentum of the low-energy recoiling daughter nuclei following β decay is negligibly perturbed by scattering and is available for study. This advantageous property of traps allows the kinematics of particles that are difficult or even impossible to directly detect to be precisely reconstructed using conservation of energy and momentum. An ion-trap system offers several advantages over atom traps, such as higher trapping efficiencies and element-independent capabilities. The first precision experiment using this system is a measurement of β - decay angular correlations in the decay of 8Li performed by inferring the momentum of the neutrino from the kinematic shifts imparted to the breakup α particles. Many other β - decay studies that would benefit from a determination of the nuclear recoil can be performed with this system.

Abstract: The CUORE Crystal Validation Runs (CCVRs) have been carried out since the end of 2008 at the Gran Sasso National Laboratories, in order to test the performances and the radiopurity of the TeO$_2$ crystals produced at SICCAS (Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences) for the CUORE experiment. In this work the results of the first 5 validation runs are presented. Results have been obtained for bulk contaminations and surface contaminations from several nuclides. Abstract: We report the results of a search for neutrinoless double-beta decay in a 9.8 kg yr exposure of Te-130 using a bolometric detector array, CUORE-0. The characteristic detector energy resolution and background level in the region of interest are 5.1 +/- 0.3 keV FWHM and 0.058 +/- 0.004(stat) +/- 0.002(syst)counts/(keV kg yr), respectively. The median 90% C.L. lower-limit half-life sensitivity of the experiment is 2.9 x 10(24) yr and surpasses the sensitivity of previous searches. We find no evidence for neutrinoless double-beta decay of Te-130 and place a Bayesian lower bound on the decay half-life, T-1/2(0 nu) > 2.7 x 10(24) yr at 90% C.L. Combining CUORE-0 data with the 19.75 kg yr exposure of Te-130 from the Cuoricino experiment we obtain T-1/2(0 nu) > 4.0 x 10(24) yr at 90% C.L. (Bayesian), the most stringent limit to date on this half-life. Using a range of nuclear matrix element estimates we interpret this as a limit on the effective Majorana neutrino mass, m beta beta < 270-760 meV.

Abstract: With 741 kg of TeO2 crystals and an excellent energy resolution of 5 keV (0.2%) at the region of interest, the CUORE (Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events) experiment aims at searching for neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te with unprecedented sensitivity. Expected to start data taking in 2015, CUORE is currently in an advanced construction phase at LNGS. CUORE projected neutrinoless double beta decay half-life sensitivity is 1.6E26 y at 1 sigma (9.5E25 y at the 90% confidence level), in five years of live time, corresponding to an upper limit on the effective Majorana mass in the range 40-100 meV (50-130 meV). Further background rejection with auxiliary bolometric detectors could improve CUORE sensitivity and competitiveness of bolometric detectors towards a full analysis of the inverted neutrino mass hierarchy. CUORE-0 was built to test and demonstrate the performance of the upcoming CUORE experiment. It consists of a single CUORE tower (52 TeO2 bolometers of 750 g each, arranged in a 13 floor structure) constructed strictly following CUORE recipes both for materials and assembly procedures. An experiment its own, CUORE-0 is expected to reach a sensitivity to the neutrinoless double beta decay half-life of 130Te around 3E24 y in one year of live time. We present an update of the data, corresponding to an exposure of 18.1 kg y. Abstract: The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is an experiment to search for neutrinoless double beta decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$) in $^{130}$Te and other rare processes. CUORE is a cryogenic detector composed of 988 TeO$_2$ bolometers for a total mass of about 741 kg. The detector is being constructed at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, Italy, where it will start taking data in 2015. If the target background of 0.01 counts/(keV$\cdot$kg$\cdot$y) will be reached, in five years of data taking CUORE will have an half life sensitivity around $1\times 10^{26}$ y at 90\% C.L. As a first step towards CUORE a smaller experiment CUORE-0, constructed to test and demonstrate the performances expected for CUORE, has been assembled and is running. The detector is a single tower of 52 CUORE-like bolometers that started taking data in spring 2013. Abstract: The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is a ton-scale experiment made of TeO2 bolometers that will probe the neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te. Excellent energy resolution, low threshold and low background make CUORE sensitive to nuclear recoils, allowing a search for dark matter interactions. With a total mass of 741 kg of TeO2, CUORE can search for an annual modulation of the counting rate at low energies. We present data obtained with CUORE-like detectors and the prospects for a dark matter search in CUORE-0, a 40-kg prototype, and CUORE.

Abstract: An underground station for the measurement of low-level radioactivity is in operation in Northern Italy in the town of Como under the Baradello hill. The rock cover is -300 m water equivalent. This paper reports about the preliminary measurements carried out to characterise the site of the Baradello hill and the installation of a high-purity Ge detector with a radio-pure copper shielding. Features and levels of the achieved background are reported and discussed, in comparison with other above ground and underground low-radioactivity stations. Sensitivities to radioactivity in typical environmental matrices are evaluated, confirming the very low-gamma background attained in the laboratory.

Abstract: The CUORE (Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events) experiment will search for neutrinoless double beta decay in {Mathematical expression}Te. Observation of the process would unambiguously establish that neutrinos are Majorana particles as well as provide information about the absolute neutrino mass scale and mass hierarchy.The CUORE setup will consist of an array of 988 tellurium dioxide crystals (containing 206 kg of {Mathematical expression}Te in total), operated as bolometers at a temperature of {Mathematical expression}10 mK. The experiment is now under construction at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory in Italy. As a first step towards CUORE, a tower (CUORE-0) has been assembled and is taking data. Here a detailed description of the CUORE-0 tower and its performance is reported. Abstract: Neutrinoless double beta decay (0nubb) is one of the most sensitive probes for physics beyond the Standard Model, providing unique information on the nature of neutrinos. In this paper we review the status and outlook for bolometric 0nubb decay searches. We summarize recent advances in background suppression demonstrated using bolometers with simultaneous readout of heat and light signals. We simulate several configurations of a future CUORE-like bolometer array which would utilize these improvements and present the sensitivity reach of a hypothetical next-generation bolometric 0nubb experiment. We demonstrate that a bolometric experiment with the isotope mass of about 1 ton is capable of reaching the sensitivity to the effective Majorana neutrino mass (|mee|) of order 10-20 meV, thus completely exploring the so-called inverted neutrino mass hierarchy region. Abstract: A measurement of the $\ensuremath{\alpha}\mathrm{\text{\ensuremath{-}}}\ensuremath{\beta}\mathrm{\text{\ensuremath{-}}}\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}$ angular correlation in the Gamow-Teller decay $^{8}\mathrm{Li}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}^{8}\mathrm{Be}^{*}+\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}+\ensuremath{\beta}$, $^{8}\mathrm{Be}^{*}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\alpha}+\ensuremath{\alpha}$ has been performed using ions confined in a linear Paul trap surrounded by silicon detectors. The energy difference spectrum of the $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ particles emitted along and opposite the direction of the $\ensuremath{\beta}$ particle is consistent with the standard model prediction and places a limit of 3.1% (95.5% confidence level) on any tensor contribution to the decay. From this result, the amplitude of any tensor component ${C}_{T}$ relative to that of the dominant axial-vector component ${C}_{A}$ of the electroweak interaction is limited to $|{C}_{T}/{C}_{A}|l0.18$ (95.5% confidence level). This experimental approach is facilitated by several favorable features of the $^{8}\mathrm{Li}$ $\ensuremath{\beta}$ decay and has different systematic effects than the previous $\ensuremath{\beta}\mathrm{\text{\ensuremath{-}}}\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}$ correlation results for a pure Gamow-Teller transition obtained from studying $^{6}\mathrm{He}$ $\ensuremath{\beta}$ decay.

Abstract: We collected 19.4 days of data from four 750 g TeO2 bolometers, and in three of them we were able to set the energy threshold around 3 keV using a new analysis technique. We found a background rate ranging from 25 cpd/keV/kg at 3 keV to 2 cpd/keV/kg at 25 keV, and a peak at 4.7 keV. The origin of this peak is presently unknown, but its presence is confirmed by a reanalysis of 62.7 kg.days of data from the finished CUORICINO experiment. Finally, we report the expected sensitivities of the CUORE0 (52 bolometers) and CUORE (988 bolometers) experiments to a WIMP annual modulation signal., 9 pages, 10 figures

Abstract: In this article we describe the background challenges for the CUORE experiment posed by surface contamination of inert detector materials such as copper, and present three techniques explored to mitigate these backgrounds. Using data from a dedicated test apparatus constructed to validate and compare these techniques we demonstrate that copper surface contamination levels better than 10E-07 - 10E-08 Bq/cm2 are achieved for 238U and 232Th. If these levels are reproduced in the final CUORE apparatus the projected 90% C.L. upper limit on the number of background counts in the region of interest is 0.02-0.03 counts/keV/kg/y depending on the adopted mitigation technique., 10 pages, 6 figures, 6 tables

Abstract: A novel technique for beta-delayed neutron spectroscopy has been developed using trapped radioactive ions. The neutron energy spectrum was reconstructed by measuring the time of flight (TOF) of the nuclear recoil following neutron emission, thereby avoiding all the challenges associated with neutron detection such as backgrounds from scattered neutrons and gamma rays and complicated detector-response functions. A proof-of-principle measurement was conducted on 137I+ by delivering ions from a 252Cf source, confining them in a linear Paul trap surrounded by radiation detectors, and measuring the neutron energy spectrum and branching ratio by detecting the beta and recoil ions in coincidence. Systematic effects were explored by determining the branching ratio three ways. Improvements to achieve higher detection efficiency, better energy resolution, and a lower neutron energy threshold were implemented by upgrading the detectors and optimizing the trapping apparatus. These improvements were demonstrated in a campaign of measurements including 138I, which is a standard beta-delayed neutron precursor outlined by a recent IAEA report on delayed neutron measurements.

The experiment finished in 2008 after more than 3 yr of active operating time. Searches for both 0ν and 2ν double-β decay to the first excited 0+ state in 130Xe were performed by studying different coincidence scenarios. The analysis was based on data representing a total exposure of N(130Te)•t=9.5×1025yr. No evidence for a signal was found. The resulting lower limits on the half-lives are T122ν(130Te→130Xe*)g1. 3×1023yr (90% C.L.), and T120ν(130Te →130Xe*)g9.4×1023yr (90% CL). ©2012 American Physical Society.

Abstract: One of the critical issues while operating bolometric detectors over periods of time of 1 year or more consists of keeping their response stable within a 0.1% level, despite the unavoidable temperature fluctuations of the cryogenic set-up. By using an energy pulser, which periodically delivers a fixed amount of energy in the absorber, it is possible to stabilize the response of the bolometers. A stabilization technique using heating devices, made up of heavily doped semiconductor material (well above the metal-to-insulator transition), has been developed in the framework of the CUORE experiment. In this paper we describe in detail the procedure for the realization of the heating elements, based on silicon planar technology. We then report on the multi-step low temperature characterization (77 K, 4.2 K, 1.5 K, 35 mK) of the heaters. Finally, an example of achieved stabilization for a CUORE-like detector is reported. The ∼ 1500 heaters tested at ∼ 1.5 K show less than 0.5% change in resistance between 30 μ V and 3 mV, and less than 1% change in value between 50 mK and 800 mK. In particular, the resistance change between 4.2 K and 1.5 K is less than 0.1%.

Abstract: International audience; Experiments searching for rare events, such as neutrinoless double beta decay and interactions of dark matter candidates, require extremely low levels of background. When these experiments are performed using macro-bolometers, radioactive contamination near the surfaces is of particular concern. For a bolometric neutrinoless double beta decay experiment, it can cause counts in the spectral region where the signal is expected, while for a dark matter experiment which exploits ionization signals for particle identification, it originates an incomplete charge collection simulating a nuclear recoil. In order to control the effects of surface contamination, we developed a novel technique that uses composite macro-bolometers to identify energy depositions that occur close to the surfaces of materials immediately surrounding the detector. The composite macro-bolometer proposed and studied here consists of a main energy absorber that is thermally coupled to and entirely surrounded by thin absorbers that act as active shields. Surface energy depositions can be rejected by the analysis of simultaneous signals in the main absorber and the shields. In this paper, we describe a full thermal model and experimental results for three prototype detectors. The detectors consist of Ge, Si, or TeO thin absorbers as active shields, all with TeO crystals as main absorbers. In all cases, the surface event rejection capability is clearly demonstrated. In addition, simulations and preliminary results show that it is possible to detect energy depositions that occurred on the shields without separate readout channels for them. The energy depositions in the shields are distinguished from those in the main absorber through pulse shape discrimination. This simplification makes this technique a viable method for the rejection of surface energy depositions in next-generation bolometric double beta decay searches, such as possible extensions or upgrades of the CUORE experiment.

Abstract: We present a search for β+/EC double beta decay of 120Te performed with the CUORICINO experiment, an array of TeO2 cryogenic bolometers. After collecting 0.0573 kg · y of 120Te, we see no evidence of a signal and therefore set the following limits on the half-life: T1/20ν>1.9·1021 y at 90% C.L. for the 0ν mode and T1/22ν>7.6·1019 y at 90% C.L. for the 2ν mode. These results improve the existing limits by almost three orders of magnitude (four in the case of 0ν mode). © 2011 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract: To better understand the contribution of cosmic ray muons to the CUORICINO background, 10 plastic scintillator detectors were installed at the CUORICINO site and operated during the final 3 months of the experiment. From these measurements, an upper limit of 0.0021 counts/(keV kg yr) (95% CL) was obtained on the cosmic ray-induced background in the neutrinoless double beta decay region of interest. Abstract: We report the performance of two prototype TeO2 macrobolometers, operated at ~25 mK, able to identify events due to energy deposited at the detector surface. This capability is obtained by thermally coupling thin Ge active layers to the main energy absorber of the bolometer, and is demonstrated by irradiating the detectors with alpha particles. The temperature variations of the main absorber and of the active layer are measured independently with doped Ge thermistors. These results show clearly that an intrinsic limitation of monolithic low temperature calorimeters, e.g., the impossibility to give information about event position, can be efficiently overcome using composite structures.

Abstract: After an introduction on the various experimental techniques to be adopted in searches for double beta decay, the new approach based on the use of cryogenic low temperature detectors is described. The present results are reported on the limit for neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te obtained with the large bolometric detector CUORICINO. This setup consists of 44 cubic crystals of natural TeO2 with 5 cm sides and 18 crystals of 3×3×6 cm3. Four of these latter crystals are made with isotopically enriched materials: two in 128Te and two others in 130Te. With a sensitive mass of 40.7 kg, this array is by far the most massive running cryogenic detector. The array is operated at a temperature of ∼10 mK in a dilution refrigerator under a heavy shield in the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory at a depth of about 3500 m.w.e. The counting rate in the region of neutrinoless double beta decay is 0.18±0.02 counts keV -1 kg-1 y-1, among the lowest in this type of experiment. No evidence for neutrinoless double beta decay is found. The corresponding lower limit for the lifetime of this process is 2×1024 years at 90% C.L. The resultant upper limit on the effective neutrino mass ranges between 0.2 and 1.0 eV, depending on the theoretically calculated nuclear matrix elements. This constraint is the most restrictive one, except for those obtained with Ge diodes, and is comparable to them. The second part of this report is devoted to the present status of the construction of the larger experiment CUORE (Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events) formed from 988 bolometers with a cubic TeO2 absorber of size 5×5×5 cm3, with a total mass of ∼750 kg. We present technical details of the CUORE setup as well as of its location and our efforts to reduce radioactive backgrounds. © 2006.

30. Large mass bolometers for neutrinoless double beta decay detection: model and last results

Abstract: Milano collaboration has been developing for many years large mass bolometers for particle detection, and in particular for the study of neutrinoless double beta decay of 130 Te. The active components of the detectors are large mass (340 g and 790 g) TeO 2 crystals, while Neutron Transmutation Doped Ge thermistors are used as phonon sensors. These devices work at low temperatures, about 5-10 mK. The mechanical and thermal connections of the detector to the thermal bath are made with PTFE pieces that hold the crystal on copper frames. Gold wires are used as electric connections. We have developed a complete thermal model for the bolometers and "ad hoc" measurements of the thermal parameters involved were performed in the Florence cryogenic laboratory. These studies have permitted to simulate the static and dynamic behaviours of the detectors. A satisfactory agreement between simulated and the experimental response has been obtained as far as the static behaviour is concerned, while the dynamic behaviour is not yet fully understood. These preliminary results however will enable us to design new detector structures in order to improve the signal-to-noise ratio and the reproducibility. Given the good performances of these devices (excellent energy resolutions were obtained, of the order of 2 keV at 911 keV and of 5 keV at 2615 keV), this technique is particularly suitable to detectors for gamma ray spectroscopy. Encouraged by this results, the Milano-Como group has joined a large international collaboration for the realization of CUORE (Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events), seraching for Dark Matter and neutrinoless Double Beta Decay, a crucial phenomenon for neutrino physics. The Cuoricino detector, a small scale test of CUORE detector, is an array of 62 large mass bolometers like those already described, and it is now in operation in the Gran Sasso undergrand laboratory (Italy). It is the largest array of bolometric detectors ever constructed.

31. Innovations in low-temperature calorimeters: surface sensitive bolometers for background rejection and capacitive bolometers for higher energy resolution

Abstract: In this contribution, we describe two innovations of the structure of large mass bolometers, proposed by the cryogenic group of the Insubria University (Como) and developed in collaboration with the Firenze group. First, up to now, low temperature calorimeters do not have any sort of spatial resolution. This means that it is not possible to reject events coming from the material that faces the detectors (holder, refrigerators shields, ...). In order to cope this problem, we developed a new kind of composite bolometers able to discriminate, by means of active ultra-pure semiconductor shields, external surface events from those coming from the absorber bulk. A second innovation that we discuss here concerns the temperature sensors. Presently, neutron transmutation doped Ge thermistors are the most common kind of phonon sensors. Unfortunately, this kind of readout dissipates power on the detector because of the thermistor biasing and also introduces a Johnson noise term. To improve energy resolution we studied and test the application of capacitive sensors that in principle could allow us to achieve a better signal-to-noise ratio. Modeling, simulations and first encouraging measurements on surface sensitive bolometers will be discussed along with preliminary results on capacitive sensors.

Abstract: We report on the final results of a series of experiments on double decay of 130Te carried out with an array of twenty cryogenic detectors. The set-up is made with crystals of TeO2 with a total mass of 6.8 kg, the largest operating one for a cryogenic experiment. Four crystals are made with isotopically enriched materials: two in 128Te and two others in 130Te. The remaining ones are made with natural tellurium, which contains 31.7 % and 33.8 % 128Te and 130Te, respectively. The array was run under a heavy shield in the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory at a depth of about 3500 m.w.e. By recording the pulses of each detector in anticoincidence with the others a lower limit of 2.1E23 years has been obtained at the 90 % C.L. on the lifetime for neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te. In terms of effective neutrino mass this is the most restrictive limit in direct experiments, after those obtained with Ge diodes. Limits on other lepton violating decays of 130Te and on the neutrinoless double beta decay of 128Te to the ground state of 128Xe are also reported and discussed. An indication is presented for the two neutrino double beta decay of 130Te. Some consequences of the present results in the interpretation of geochemical experiments are discussed., Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables; more analysis details. 34. Low-temperature high-Z gamma-detectors with very high energy resolution

Abstract: High-Z low-temperature calorimeters are developed by an Italian collaboration (Milano-Como-Gran Sasso Underground Laboratories) in order to search for rare nuclear events and Dark Matter massive candidates. They exhibit an excellent energy resolution, close to that of Ge-diodes, but a much higher efficiency. Different high-Z materials were initially employed . A many-years optimisation work on tellurium oxide (TeO2) lead to impressive results: devices with total masses around 750 g present FWHM energy resolutions on gamma-ray peaks ranging from 1 KeV (close to the 5 KeV energy threshold) to 2.6 KeV at 2615 KeV (208Tl gamma line). A 3.2 KeV FWHM energy resolution was obtained at 5.4 MeV (210Po alpha line), which is by far the best one ever achieved with any alpha detector. These devices, operated at about 10 mK, consist of a TeO2 single crystal thermally coupled to a 50 mg Neutron Transmutation Doped (NTD) Ge crystal working as a temperature sensor. Special care was devoted to methods for response linearization and temporal stabilisation. Devices based on the same principle and specifically optimised could find applications in several fields like gamma-ray astrophysics, nuclear physics searches, environmental monitoring and radiation metrology.© (2001) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. Abstract: The most critical point of the CUORE Project [CUORE Proposal, see the web page: http://crio.mib.infn.it/wig ] is the background level (BKGL) in the neutrinoless double beta decay ( 0 ν β β ) region that is dominated by degraded particles coming from materials that face the detectors. Surface Sensitive Bolometers (SSBs) have been developed in order to reduce the BKGL by means of an active background discrimination. The principle of this technique and the first results obtained are briefly described in the following paper.

Abstract: In the framework of the bolometric experiment CUORE, a new and promising technique has been developed in order to control the dangerous contamination coming from the surfaces close to the detector. In fact, by means of a composite bolometer, it is possible to partially overcome the loss of spatial resolution of the bolometer itself and to clearly identify events coming from outside.
