Abstract

High spectral resolution lidar (HSRL) are known to offer capabilities of separating attenuated aerosol and molecular backscattering so that particle extinction and backscattering can be separately retrieved. UV operation provides high energy in eye-safety conditions. Further to that, it could be important for most meteorological or environmental studies to get wind measurements at the same time. LNG is now the only HSR Doppler Lidar (HSRDL) system capable of this. Results obtained during ground-based and airborne measurements show that the backscatter and extinction coefficients at 355 nm can be measured with a relative precision better than 10% (adjusting altitude and time resolution from 60 m to 240 m and 30s to 2mn, respectively) in aerosol layers of 0.5 10−6 m−1 sr−1 backscatter coefficient from ground and aircraft. The same relative precision is obtained in cirrus clouds of a 10−5 m−1 sr−1 backscatter coefficient. The capacity of the system to perform wind velocity measurements has also been demonstrated with precisions in the range of 1 to 2 ms−1 in same conditions. We present the main characteristics and illustrate observational capabilities from ground-based and airborne measurements.

Abstract

A unique Rayleigh-Mie Doppler lidar capable of wind measurements in the 5-50 km altitude range is operated routinely at La Reunion island (21° S, 55° E) since 2015. We evaluate instrument’s capacities in capturing fine structures in stratospheric wind profiles and their temporal and spatial variability through comparison with collocated radiosoundings and ECMWF analysis. Perturbations in the wind velocity are used to retrieve gravity wave frequency spectrum.

Abstract

On the NASA 2020 rover mission to Jezero crater, the remote determination of the texture, mineralogy and chemistry of rocks is essential to quickly and thoroughly characterize an area and to optimize the selection of samples for return to Earth. As part of the Perseverance payload, SuperCam is a suite of five techniques that provide critical and complementary observations via Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS), Time-Resolved Raman and Luminescence (TRR/L), visible and near-infrared spectroscopy (VISIR), high-resolution color imaging (RMI), and acoustic recording (MIC). SuperCam operates at remote distances, primarily 2-7 m, while providing data at sub-mm to mm scales. We report on SuperCam's science objectives in the context of the Mars 2020 mission goals and ways the different techniques can address these questions. The instrument is made up of three separate subsystems: the Mast Unit is designed and built in France; the Body Unit is provided by the United States; the calibration target holder is contributed by Spain, and the targets themselves by the entire science team. This publication focuses on the design, development, and tests of the Mast Unit; companion papers describe the other units. The goal of this work is to provide an understanding of the technical choices made, the constraints that were imposed, and ultimately the validated performance of the flight model as it leaves Earth, and it will serve as the foundation for Mars operations and future processing of the data.

Abstract

A unique Rayleigh-Mie Doppler wind lidar, measuring Doppler shift between the emitted and backscattered light using directdetection technique is deployed at Observatory of Haute Provence Southern France) and at Reunion island (tropical Indian Ocean). The instrument was shown capable of wind measurements between 5 and 50 km with accuracy better than 1 m/s up to 30 km. The system consists of a monomode Nd:Yag laser operating at 532 nm, three telescopes and a double-edge Fabry-Perot interferometer. The laser light is sent alternatively in the vertical as well as zonal and meridional directions at 40° from the zenith using a rotating mirror. The two components of the horizontal wind are obtained from the measurement of the Doppler shift of the return signal spectrally filtered by the Fabry-Perot etalon. After demonstration of the method in 1989 the measurements were used for studying stratospheric dynamics as well as for constructing wind climatology up to 50 km altitude. A new system, featuring a more compact design was installed at Maïdo observatory at Reunion Island (21° S). The design of the instrument, results of observations and comparison against GPS radiosondes are presented. Application of Doppler lidar for validation of the future ADM-Aeolus satellite mission is discussed as well.

Abstract

The Bepi Colombo mission will explore the Mercury planet and its environment. Probing of Hermean Exosphere By Ultraviolet Spectroscopy (PHEBUS) is one of the instruments of the payload. It is a double spectrometer for Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) and Far Ultraviolet (FUV) spectral regions devoted to the characterization of Mercury's exosphere. In this work we will present the calibration philosophy that will be applied to the Flight Model, and explain how a full instrument calibration can be derived from the wholly characterization of the optical subsystems through the Mueller Matrix formalism. The experimental results concerning of PHEBUS prototype optical subsystems are presented, which have been performed in the 55 - 315 nm range by using the normal incidence reflectometer at LUXOR Laboratory (CNR - Institute for Photonics and Nanotechnology, Padova).
